Rumor Has It That the Mysterious Location of Shakespeare's London House Was Finally Found— By Accident

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 9:10am

There’s something about London that makes you feel like you’re always one step away from a discovery. Not the kind behind glass in a museum, but the kind embedded in the street beneath your shoes. And now, one of the biggest literary mysteries in the city has quietly been solved.

The exact location of William Shakespeare’s long-lost London home has been identified after centuries of uncertainty. Not through a dramatic excavation or headline-grabbing dig, but through a moment of accidental brilliance in an archive. For travelers, it’s the kind of discovery that doesn’t just add a new stop to your itinerary. It changes how you experience an entire city.

Be the first to know about new travel trends, tips, and tales—subscribe now.

The Accidental Discovery That Solved a 400-Year-Old Puzzle

A researcher at King’s College London, Lucy Munro, wasn’t even looking for Shakespeare when she uncovered the clue. While examining historical records, she came across a 17th-century map that revealed something extraordinary: the precise location and layout of Shakespeare’s only known London property.

For years, historians knew the playwright had purchased a home in Blackfriars in 1613. But the exact location remained frustratingly vague, marked only by a plaque suggesting it was “near” a certain spot. That ambiguity has now disappeared.

The newly identified site spans what are today Ireland Yard, Burgon Street, and St Andrew’s Hill. And in a twist that feels almost poetic, the existing plaque turns out to have been right all along. It wasn’t near the house. It was on it.

The house itself was more than a simple residence. Records show it was an L-shaped structure built within the remains of a medieval monastery, suggesting both status and practicality.

And perhaps most intriguing of all, it sat just a short walk from the Blackfriars Theatre, where Shakespeare’s company performed. That proximity is leading scholars to rethink how much time he actually spent in London toward the end of his life.

What This Means for Travelers in London Right Now

The most exciting thing is that travelers can actually visit the site. When I think back to walking through London, I remember how often I passed places without fully realizing their significance.

Now imagine standing on St Andrew’s Hill knowing that Shakespeare may have walked out of his front door there. That he may have written, revised, or imagined scenes that would define literature just steps away.

Even more interesting is how close the site is to other major literary landmarks. The area sits within walking distance of Shakespeare's Globe, creating an unintentional walking route through Shakespeare’s working life rather than just his legacy.

A New Kind of Literary Tourism Is Taking Shape

This discovery may not look like a tourist attraction yet, but it has all the ingredients to become one. History has a way of drawing people in once it becomes tangible. And now that this site is no longer abstract, it opens the door to new forms of travel experiences.

We’re likely to see guided walking tours evolve, connecting the Blackfriars site with theaters, taverns, and streets tied to Shakespeare’s world. There’s already local lore about nearby pubs, including one that may have stood in roughly the same spot since his time, adding a layer of lived-in storytelling to the area.

What the Discovery Reveals About Shakespeare Himself

For years, the prevailing narrative suggested he spent his final years retreating to Stratford-upon-Avon. But this new evidence complicates that idea. The house's location, combined with its size and proximity to the theater district, suggests he remained deeply connected to London’s creative and professional life.

Scholars now believe he may have worked on later plays, such as Henry VIII and The Two Noble Kinsmen, while associated with this property. It paints a picture of someone still actively engaged, still producing, still embedded in the city's energy.

How to Experience Shakespeare’s London Differently

If you’re planning a trip to London, this discovery offers a new way to build your itinerary. Start with the expected. Visit the Globe. Walk along the Thames. Take in the theaters and museums. But then, do something slightly less structured.

Head to Blackfriars. Find the intersection of Ireland Yard, Burgon Street, and St Andrew’s Hill. Stand there for a moment without rushing to the next stop. Look around. Listen to the city. Because this is the kind of place that reminds you why travel is so compelling in the first place. Not just for what is preserved, but for what is rediscovered.

I Absolutely Refuse to Use TSA Facial Recognition at the Airport— Here's Why

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 9:04am

Airports already ask a lot of us. Shoes off, laptops out, liquids in tiny bottles. Now, increasingly, they’re asking for something more permanent: your face.

On a recent trip, I stepped up to the TSA podium and noticed something new. A small camera, angled just right, waiting for me to look up. It felt subtle, commonplace even, but it also felt like a line I wasn’t sure I wanted to cross. So I didn’t. And just so you know, you don’t have to either.

Fuel your wanderlust with our top travel stories—join our newsletter today.

What TSA Facial Recognition Actually Does (And Why It’s Expanding)

Facial recognition at airport security is here, and it’s growing fast. The Transportation Security Administration has already rolled it out in more than 80 U.S. airports, with plans to expand to hundreds more in the coming years.

When you hand over your ID, a camera takes a live photo of your face. That image is then compared to the one embedded in your passport or ID chip. If it matches, you move along, with no human double-check required.

The pitch is simple: faster lines, less friction, and a more “touchless” experience. TSA says the system is designed to enhance both security and convenience, essentially automating what officers already do manually. But convenience has a way of disguising complexity. And in this case, what appears to be a simple glance into a camera is actually participation in a rapidly evolving biometric system.

Related: Politician Demands TSA Lift Controversial Policy, Calling It a 'Reckless' Risk

The Quiet Truth: It’s Optional (Even If It Doesn’t Feel Like It)

Facial recognition at TSA checkpoints is voluntary. You can opt out. No penalty. No delay. No losing your place in line. All I had to do is say something like: “I’d like to opt out of the facial scan.” The officer verified my identity manually, just like we’ve done for years.

Signage can be easy to overlook. The process moves quickly, and when a system is presented as the default, opting out can feel like you’re disrupting the flow. Some travelers report confusion or even resistance when declining, despite official policy allowing it. That subtle pressure is part of what gives me pause. When something is technically optional but socially nudged, it’s worth asking why.

Privacy Isn’t Paranoia, It’s a Travel Decision

Your face isn’t like a password. You can’t reset it. You can’t change it if something goes wrong. And while TSA states that images are not stored after verification in most cases, there are exceptions during testing and evaluation phases.

Privacy advocates have been raising concerns for years. The Electronic Privacy Information Center has called facial recognition an “invasive and dangerous surveillance technology,” warning of its broader implications if it is normalized, according to Travel & Leisure.

There’s also the issue of accuracy. A study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology found higher rates of misidentification for certain demographic groups, particularly Asian and Black individuals, as reported by Travel & Leisure.

Even if the system works most of the time perfectly, “most of the time” isn’t always good enough when identity is involved. Technology rarely moves backward. Once something becomes standard, it tends to expand. What starts at security checkpoints could extend to boarding gates, lounges, and even entire travel ecosystems.

The Bigger Travel Question: What Kind of Journey Do You Want?

Travel has always been about movement, but it’s also about experience. Do you want a seamless, automated journey where your face becomes your passport? Or do you prefer a slightly slower, more human interaction where you retain a bit more control over your identity?

There’s no universal right answer. But for me, standing in that airport line, the decision felt clear. I’m okay taking an extra second.

One of the Most Popular Anxiety Medications Has Been Recalled Nationwide

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:52am

According to the Food and Drug Administration, a popular anxiety medication might not be safe to use at the moment. Xanax, which is a fast-acting benzodiazepine that calms the nervous system, has been recalled nationwide.

People reported that “3-milligram tablets of Xanax XR, the brand name for the drug alprazolam, sold in 60-tablet bottles were initially recalled by the distributor Viatris on March 17. On Wednesday, April 15, the pills were recalled nationwide.”

The affected batches were prescribed between August 27, 2024 and May 29, 2025. The pills are part of the lot number 8177156 with the expiration date 02/28/2027. At this time, it is unclear how many bottles were in the recalled lot.

Related: ‘The Hunger Games’ Star Has Been Arrested for Assault With Intent To Kill

This recall is considered a Class II, which means that “the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” Class I is the most severe, indicating that exposure to a product has a high likelihood of causing adverse side effects of death. Class III is the lowest-risk, which indicates the product violates regulations but is unlikely to cause any harm.

Class II falls in between the two, so if you have been prescribed any pills that have been impacted by the recent recall, then you should stop taking them immediately and safely dispose of them. This is ideally done through drug take-back locations, which are typically available at locations like Walgreens and CVS.

Although there have been no known reports of adverse reactions from the recalled lot, the recall is happening out of an “abundance of caution.”

The batch failed dissolution specifications, which means it was not dissolving at the standard rate. According to the FDA, “the dissolution is the test that checks how well a drug dissolves and releases when placed in a liquid. Failure to meet specifications could mean a less effective medication or incorrect dosage.”

Xanax is one of the most widely distributed medications that is used in the treatment of anxiety and panic disorders. Although it can be dangerous and addictive when it is misused, it is generally considered safe when it is taken as directed by a doctor.

21-Year-Old Book Ahead of Its Time Ranked Among Best ‘Magic, Adventure, Romance’ Books on Goodreads

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:50am

When it comes to romance, there are times that we want more than just the love story. Readers want adventure, and in many cases, magic. It’s no wonder that romantasy is a genre that continues to grow in popularity. However, it’s been a popular genre for many years.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder was a novel ahead of its time when it was released in September 2005. While it did give us the enemies-to-lovers trope, a twist at the end made it clear that Snyder was willing to add inclusive stories. Mixed with good writing, the positive twist is likely the reason this book is sitting among the top of best “Magic, Adventure, Romance” books on Goodreads.

‘Poison Study’ Is a Story of Second Chances

While being a story of romance, there is also the second-chances trope mixed in. It all starts with Yelena waiting for her execution, when she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime. All she has to do is eat meals and sleep in a palace. Of course, there’s a catch.

She’s going to be the food tester for the Commander of Ixia. To make sure she doesn’t run away, the chief of security, Valek, feeds her a poison that she needs an antidote for at regular intervals, and only he has that antidote. Of course, it means relying on the man who becomes her enemy if she wants to stay alive.

When rebels attempt to seize Ixia, things take a turn for the worse. On top of that, Yelena develops magical powers that she can’t control, and now she needs to keep herself safe not just from poison but from those who want to claim she is a rebel.

‘Poison Study’ Is a YA Adventure for the Masses

Poison Study currently sits in third place on the list of best “Magic, Adventure, Romance” on Goodreads. It’s not that surprising once you get into it. While Yelena is figuring out what’s going on with her own new abilities, we’re also learning more and more about the plots against the Commander of Ixia.

There is clearly something much bigger going on, and we’re left wondering if there is anyone Yelena can trust. Is it possible that the chief of security, who appears to be a psychopath, could actually be the man trying to keep her safe? It’s a YA adventure romantasy for the masses, and there are even more books in the series to continue Yelena’s tale and her love story with Valek.

Beloved ‘Star Trek’ Legend, 88, Makes Rare Public Appearance

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:48am

George Takei was recently spotted enjoying a night out in Los Angeles, which is certainly rare for the beloved Star Trek icon.

The 88-year-old actor appeared alongside his husband, Brad Takei, during the stroll, leaning on a cane and holding tightly to his partner’s hand in photos obtained by Page Six on Wednesday, April 15.

In the pics, George wore a navy blue puffer jacket and gray sweatpants. Brad, 72, paired a beige blazer with a purple button-down shirt and blue pants.

Back in 2024, George opened up about the secret to their lasting bond. “He keeps me laughing and he keeps me getting angry. I think it’s sharing these emotions,” he told PEOPLE. He also described their dynamic as complementary, noting that Brad is “a strict disciplinarian” who brings organization and structure to his life.

Takei publicly came out as gay in 2005 at the age of 68, which at the time, reshaped his career and proved he was a trailblazer and LGBTQ+ advocate.

In February, actor Karim Diané revealed that George expressed support for his character in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the franchise’s first openly gay Klingon. In an email shared with Diané shortly after running into him alongside George, Brad explained the significance of the moment, writing, “For decades, he lived in quiet fear that being openly gay would mean the end of his acting career.”

He continued, “That’s why seeing you step into a queer role—especially in Star Trek, a franchise George holds so dear—is so meaningful to us.”

1967 Hit Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:35am

What started as a hit 1967 coming-of-age film has now become a timeless cinematic classic.

Directed by Mike Nichols, The Graduate not only marked his breakthrough masterpiece but also remains one of the most defining films of its era, capturing the uncertainties of adulthood, the perfect blend of comedy and drama, as well as a portrait of upper-middle-class suburban life in the 1960s.

In addition to its compelling storyline, the film showcases a stellar ensemble cast, led by Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate who  finds himself having a romantic affair with an older woman, Mrs. Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft.

In a turn of events, he eventually falls in love with her daughter, Elaine, portrayed by Katharine Ross.

Decades after its release, the movie continues to earn acclaim and has been recognized among the “best movies of all time,” as cited by Collider.

The criteria were based on artistic merit and innovation, focusing on the excellence of key elements like directing, writing and overall creative execution.

Another factor was the cultural impact, the timelessness and the cinematic significance of the movie.

Interestingly, The Graduate ranked number 58 on the list of top 100 greatest films of all time.

Collider described it as a “shock to the system in 1967” that even today, the movie still hasn't lost its impact on viewers.

“Parts of it are very funny, other parts are bleak, and the whole thing is wonderfully uneasy and anxiety-ridden, with the narrative revolving around a listless college graduate who’s unsure of where to go in life,” as mentioned by the outlet.

From Box Office Sensation to Critically Acclaimed Classic

The Graduate didn't just earn its status as one of the greatest movies of all time without reason.

Upon its release, the movie became a massive box office success, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 1967 in North America, with over $104 million in domestic gross.

From the public’s strong reception, the Dustin Hoffman-led movie also scored not just multiple recognitions but also major awards.

This includes winning Best Director at the 40th Academy Awards and securing five wins at the 25th Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for Anne Bancroft and Most Promising Newcomer – Female for Katharine Ross.

Guy Fieri Quietly Launches New Drink Collaboration Amid Controversy

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:32am

Mayor of Flavortown Guy Fierihas been making headlines this week, although not for the reasons the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives star would like to be. At UFC 327 over the weekend, Fieri was seen interacting with brothers Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate, both of whom are under investigation for serious allegations.

The brothers currently face 21 total criminal charges in the United Kingdom (UK), including allegations of rape and assault, and there are separate human trafficking charges in a Romanian case. In light of this, clips of Fieri seemingly having a friendly interaction with the brothers at UFC 327 led to swift and intense backlash online.

Fieri has since issued a statement about the incident, saying that he is "devastated" and explaining, "I was there to see the fights, and when I was walking through the venue, the Tate brothers stood up and said hello, and that’s when the exchanged happened. I did not know them or about them before that moment."

"I’ll never pretend to be a perfect person, but let me be crystal clear, I do not know the Tate brothers nor do I support them in any way," Fieri's statement added.

Amid this controversy, the decision was made to cancel an event with Fieri and Waterloo Sparkling Water that was set to take place in New York City on the evening of the 16th, celebrating their collaboration on three new, limited-time flavors: Apple Pie à la Mode, Coconut Lime Cooler and Root Beer Float. These flavors and this second-year collab between Fieri and the brand were meant to celebrate America 250.

While the flavors will still be rolled out, the collaboration will no longer be formally announced, and the Waterloo Sparkling Water website seems to be scrubbed of any mention of the new drink flavors or the 2026 partnership with Fieri (although articles about previous team-ups with Fieri remain on the site).

The UK trial against the Tate brothers is expected to begin in June 2026.

11 Best Mascaras for Older Women To Lengthen Thinning, Aging Lashes, Tested by Makeup Artists

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:14am

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

If your mascara suddenly looks clumpy, flaky or just not as good as it used to, it might not be the mascara itself—it could be your lashes. They've changed, and nobody warned you it was going to happen. Just like the hair on your head, eyelashes thin out, become more brittle, lose their curl and even start going gray as you age. Hormonal shifts, years of curling, heavy formulas and stress all take a toll. The thick, dark lashes you had in your twenties are gone, and applying mascara the same way you always have just highlight what's missing. Sound familiar? You'll likely benefit from a list of the best mascaras for older women.

Most women respond by piling on more product, thinking more layers equals more impact. But makeup artists who work with mature clients daily see this backfire constantly. Heavy coats can weigh down already fragile lashes, making them look clumpy instead of voluminous and actually close up the eye rather than opening it. The waterproof formulas you rely on? They might be drying out your lashes and causing breakage every time you rub them off. And if you're skipping the lash curler because you think it's damaging, you might be missing the single easiest way to instantly lift and open your eyes.

Here's what actually works: lighter formulas, strategic application techniques and—this is important—taking care of your lash health between wears. We talked to celebrity makeup artists who've worked with everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Quinta Brunson to find out which mascaras perform best on mature lashes and how to apply them correctly.

Top Mascaras for Mature WomenDo Eyelashes Change as We Age?

Yes, and it's something everyone notices but nobody talks about enough. All five makeup artists confirmed the same thing: lashes absolutely change as you age, and it's completely normal.Scott Barnes, whose clients include Jennifer Lopez and Celine Dion, explains what happens.

"Hair, brows and lashes can become thinner and less dense as women age due to hormonal changes and the hair follicles spending more time in sleep mode than in growth mode," he tells Parade. "Lash color can also fade due to loss of melanin pigment and some women even experience breakage due the natural decline of oil production."

Renée Loiz, who works with Quinta Brunson and Uzo Aduba, gets specific about what changes: lashes can become more sparse, more brittle and the natural curl pattern can change. “You may also start to see a few gray lashes coming in," she adds.

What Is the Best Way for Older Women To Apply Mascara?

Technique matters more than you think—and most women are doing it wrong.

Before you even start, Barnes says to apply your eye cream first (before your moisturizer) so the eye cream has time to sink in and not get on eyelashes.

Then onto the actual application.

Celebrity makeup artist Avital of Puzzle Makeup, makes a bold claim: with the right technique, you can achieve a great look with 95% of the mascaras already out there. Alright!

Her method is specific and game-changing: before you apply, create space. Gently pull the skin at your temple outward to create more room between your lashes and your eyelid. “This prevents mascara from transferring onto your lid, a game changer for mature skin," she explains.

Then comes the two-pass technique: "Place the body of the brush as close to the roots as possible on the top side of your lashes and brush all the way to the tip. Then flip the brush and repeat from the underside, sweeping upward from root to tip.” She says you'll see the difference immediately: lashes that look longer, thicker and lifted.

Molly R. Stern, who works with Chelsea Handler and Maya Rudolph, has a little extra tip that actually sounds pretty fun. "You really want to wiggle the wand into the base of the lashes.” Not only is this a good time, it’ll give the effect of a defined lash line.

Can You Wear Mascara on Your Bottom Lashes When You're Older?

Yes, but the approach needs to change. The consensus is that bottom lash mascara is fine—encouraged, even!—but requires a lighter hand and sometimes different products.

Avital has a specific recommendation that surprised us. "As we age, the under-eye area changes. More pigmentation, dark circles and puffiness become common, and black mascara on the bottom lashes can draw direct attention to all of those areas.

The fix is simple: switch to a lighter color on your bottom lashes. A soft brown or light brown mascara brings warmth and definition to the eye without creating heaviness underneath.

Her application technique is different too. For bottom lashes, dab, don't brush. Use the body of the wand in light dabbing motions along your bottom lashes for a natural, defined finish.

What Mistakes Do Older Women Make When Applying Mascara?

The most common error? Thinking more product equals better results. Barnes sees women overdoing it constantly.

"They over apply to get impact, often too many layers which get clumpy and flakey," he explains. "They don't use eye makeup remover, so there is still residue from the prior days of mascara. Not only does this lead to clumping and flaking, it is also irritating to the eye and can cause issues such as styes and infections.”

So, not only does it look bad, it can be dangerous. Celebrity makeup artist Jenepher Reynolds, who has worked with Norah Jones and Harry Connick, Jr., agrees and says just do two to three “intentional passes with the right technique” for perfect results.

Reynolds also thinks that women should never skip using an eyelash curler. "Curling the lashes is one of the easiest ways to lift and open the eyes, yet it is often overlooked. It makes a noticeable difference before mascara is even applied."

And don't forget this pro tip from Barnes: "Do not pump the wand in and out of the mascara tube, that just pushes air into the tube and dries out the product, which will result in flaking and raccoon eyes.” Instead, swivel the wand in the tube to pick up the product and pull the wand directly out of the tube.

MSC Announces Upgraded 'Beach Day' at This Fan-Favorite Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Resort

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:10am

While Royal Caribbean has been dominating the headlines this year with its massive beach club launches, MSC Cruises just made a sophisticated counter-move in the Southern Caribbean.

By entering a joint venture with the legendary Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, MSC is transforming Catalina Island from a rugged nature reserve into a seamless, resort-level experience.

This isn't just a minor refresh; it’s a strategic play to bridge the gap between a standard cruise excursion and the exclusive, "all-inclusive" vibe that modern travelers are beginning to expect.

The timing is particularly sharp, arriving just ahead of MSC’s new year-round service out of La Romana this November. The upgrades focus on the "pain points" of island days—namely, infrastructure.

The partnership is introducing a signature open-air beach pavilion that serves as a central dining hub for international and local dishes, alongside a new tropical palapa bar designed for ocean-side socializing.

To match the "private club" energy, they are also adding rentable daybeds and cabanas, giving families and couples a home base that feels more like a luxury hotel suite than a patch of sand.

For those who travel for the scenery, the island’s status as a Natural Monument remains the star. A new dedicated water sports center will make it easier to explore the surrounding coral reefs, while functional upgrades to the changing rooms and restrooms ensure the "logistics" of a beach day don't distract from the beauty of the Dominican Republic.

By tapping into the local expertise of Casa de Campo, MSC is proving that you don't need to build a theme park on an island to create a "must-visit" destination. You just need to lean into the existing culture, elevate the comfort, and give guests a reason to stay all day.

Best-Selling Novel Named No. 1 Romance Book Became a Hit Series

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:06am

Heated Rivalry took the world by storm at the end of 2025, with Variety calling it the year’s biggest TV surprise. It became the most-watched original series on Canada’s Crave and the top-rated non-animated acquired series on HBO Max in the US.

The romance series starring Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander and Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov has now reached another milestone of success.

Heated Rivalry is based on the book of the same name by Rachel Reid, and Forbes recently reported that it’s become the No. 1 romance book in America. The soundtrack, composed by Québécois artist and composer Peter Peter, has also become the No. 1 soundtrack on iTunes.

With over 10.6 million viewers per episode, Heated Rivalry fans haven’t been able to get enough of the romance series, to the point that some are flocking to Canada to visit some of the filming locations.

The iconic cottage from Episode 6 recently became available on Airbnb, and it’s booked through March 2028. Fans have also been flocking to Heated Rivalry’s hockey rink in Ontario, and other filming locations like Relay Coffee Roasters, which was transformed into Straw+Berry in Episode 3.

While Heated Rivalry’s success was a surprise, it was a welcome one to Reid.

“There have been so many lovely stories that people have shared with me, including athletes — I'd say mostly former hockey players, or other team sports athletes — who felt really seen by the show or by the books,” Reid said in an interview with Q. “Before the show, I got messages like that as well about the books, and I did try to reply to all those, but it's definitely become a lot more difficult to do that. I do appreciate all of them, and I do read them.”

Reid learned that director Jacob Tierney was interested in creating the TV show only days after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Because of the success of the show, she was able to receive specialist help with the disease.

“It was nice timing for that news because [the show] gave me something positive to focus on for the next couple of years,” Reid said to Jenna Bush Hager.

Tierney said that there will be more Heated Rivalry truly as soon as humanly possible,” with a targeted April 2027 release. In the meantime, check out a clip from Heated Rivalry’s first season:

1966 Low-Budget Classic Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:04am

The Endless Summer has been listed as one of the greatest films of all time. The 1966 Bruce Brown surf documentary ranked on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the “best movies of all time,” holding court among classics such as The Godfather, The Wizard of Oz, and Alien.

The Endless Summer followed surfers Mike Hynson and Robert August as they traveled around the world on a surfing trip in search of the perfect wave. The movie was narrated by Brown, and the soundtrack music came from The Sandals.

Described by Turner Classic Movies as a “cinematic time capsule,” the film showcased the 1960s beaches in Malibu, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Ghana, and Senegal as the two surfers made their pit stops. TCM noted that the film's charm was “derived from its haphazard construction.”

“Shot on 16-millimeter film, with post-synchronized sound, it's a glorified home movie that nevertheless captures a short-lived period in American popular culture,” the outlet shared.

'The Endless Summer' had no budget but made a lot of money

The Endless Summer was self-financed by Brown and cost $50,000 to produce, according to AFI. The filmmaker reportedly hitchhiked to filming sites while carrying his camera gear.

In an interview with The Guardian, Brown revealed that he stretched his budget when he started working on the film in late 1963.

“Originally, we were going to go only to South Africa, but tickets to go around the world turned out to be $50 cheaper,” he said. “We worked out a schedule so that we would miss connecting flights and purposefully had to stop over. We were hoping to get the airline to pay for our accommodation that way, but they never did. The movie ended up costing $50,000, paid out of my own pocket. It was guerrilla filmmaking. Often, there wasn’t much time to do anything other than sit up real quick and grab a shot.”

Brown told The Guardian he couldn’t get any major Hollywood studios to distribute his film, so he rented out a theater in New York himself. Distributors then came calling, with Cinema V,  agreeing to distribute the film without making changes to it.

Good reviews helped the film take off

The theater release of The Endless Summer sparked great reviews from unexpected critics. "For some reason, the real entrenched film critics seemed to like it, maybe because it was different from what they were used to seeing,” Brown said, per TCM. “If they did a review and wrote, ‘Brown did a s---ty movie,' we'd have been dead. But nobody knew who I was, and maybe they felt it wasn't worth criticizing, so they pretty much gave us good reviews and helped us out."

A 1967 review by famed movie critic Roger Ebert described The Endless Summer as “a completely uncomplicated film, fresh and natural, designed only to please.“

“The film itself offers exactly what it promises — 91 minutes of wish fulfillment,” Ebert added. ‘Shunning the tons of equipment ordinarily taken along on location, Brown used only what he could carry. The beautiful photography he brought home almost makes you wonder if Hollywood hasn’t been trying too hard."

All of the low-budget grunt work paid off. “It ended up making $33 million worldwide,” Brown told The Guardian of The Endless Summer. “It caught people the right way. It was a couple of young guys taking off around the world on blind faith with a mission to find some waves. Even if they didn’t start surfing, it told people to follow their dream.”

‘Virgin River’ Star Tim Matheson Says Doc 'Will Do Anything' to Win Back Hope (Exclusive)

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 8:00am

As the patriarch of Virgin River, Vernon “Doc” Mullins (Tim Matheson) endures one of his most challenging chapters yet in Season 7 of the popular Netflix series.

Stripped of his medical license, Doc fights tirelessly to reclaim it – going head-to-head with Dr. Hayes, a flashy physician from nearby Grace Valley. Unable to treat the patients who have become like family, his frustration steadily builds.

All of this unfolds as his nurse practitioner, Melinda “Mel” Munroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and her new husband, Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), navigate an emotional journey to adopt a baby boy.

Through it all, Doc stays grounded in both heart and purpose—but his decision to collaborate with the very doctor who tried to derail his career creates a painful rift with his wife, Hope (Annette O’Toole).

At the same time, Doc continues to show up for those around him, supporting Mel and Jack, his grandson, Denny, and his growing family.

“That’s the thing about Virgin River,” Matheson exclusively told Parade. “You have friends, family, and loved ones to support you through the hard times and celebrate the good times.”

In a world increasingly defined by distance and digital connection, Matheson believes the show offers something rare.

“People think posting on Facebook is a relationship—but it’s not,” he says. “Our show is a throwback to The Andy Griffith Show—to Mayberry—where people are truly there for each other. It’s refreshing, and it’s something we all wish we had more of.”

This isn’t Matheson’s first turn as a small-town doctor. He previously played Dr. Brick Breland on Hart of Dixie, a lighter, more comedic role. Rather than shy away from the overlap, Virgin River embraced it, leaning into audiences’ appreciation for his portrayal of a deeply human physician.

Season 7 blends romance with high-stakes drama. Particularly in Doc’s fight to regain his license, culminating in a powerful speech before the medical board.

“I loved that whole sequence,” Matheson said. “Doc explains why he left corporate medicine in Seattle, where he was head of internal medicine. He had lost touch with his patients -- bogged down by insurance companies and bureaucracy.”

In one defining moment, Doc recalls losing a patient he believes he could have saved.

“He basically says, ‘I quit. I’m going to go on to find a place where I can really help people,’ ” Matheson explains. “That’s what brought him to Virgin River.”

Doc’s past, especially his time as a doctor in Vietnam, shaped that calling. “When you’ve seen people at their worst, when you’ve lost patients right in front of you, medicine becomes deeply personal,” Matheson says. “Virgin River was a kind of salvation for him.”

That idea of starting over is central to the series. “People come to Virgin River to turn a page in their lives,” he says. “They’re recovering from loss or hardship. For Doc, it’s about reconnecting with why he became a doctor in the first place—to truly care for people.”

Meanwhile, tension builds at home. Hope reconnects with her estranged ex-husband, Roland, at the same time that she struggles to accept Doc’s decision to work with Dr. Hayes and his Grace Valley medical practice

“It’s a clash of perspectives,” Matheson says. “Hope feels hurt that Doc didn’t consult her, while he’s focused on what’s best for his patients.”

Still, Doc sees a bigger picture. “It’s more than just their relationship—it’s about the well-being of the whole community,” he says. “He just wants her to understand that.”

Their history adds emotional weight. After past mistakes—including alcoholism and infidelity -- Doc has spent decades trying to rebuild Hope’s trust. “Hope is the love of his life,” Matheson says. “He’s been trying for 20 years to make things right—and she finally gave him that second chance.”

Now, the question becomes whether he can reach her again. “What can he do to reopen her heart?” Matheson asks. “He’ll do anything to find a way back.”

Offscreen, Matheson is celebrating the June 2 paperback release of his memoir, Damn Glad to Meet You: My Seven Decades in the Hollywood Trenches.

Tim Matheson. Damn Glad to Meet You

The book reflects on a remarkable career, with stories about icons the modern generation may not remember, such as Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda, Jackie GleasonandBob Hope, as well as John Belushi andLeslie Nielsen.

“It’s about sharing what I learned—from the greats, from my successes, and from my mistakes,” he says. The memoir even includes a “Film School Bootcamp” filled with practical advice for aspiring actors and directors.

His guiding principle? “Be true to yourself and your heart—that’s what will carry you as an artist.”

Looking ahead, Matheson is eager to continue Doc’s journey in Season 8, which is now in production. “There’s still so much to explore,” he says. “Hope and Doc are facing real challenges, while Mel and Jack are navigating parenthood and a sick child. How do they get through it?”

If fan reactions are any indication, audiences will be right there with them. “I was at a car wash recently, and a guy told me he and his wife had started the show all over again from season 1,” Matheson recalls. “It was so genuine that it really moved me.”

That connection, he says, is the show’s true heartbeat. “It’s about the way people connect to Virgin River -- and to each other. And that just keeps growing with every season.”

Seasons 1-7 of Virgin River are available to stream on Netflix. Season 8 has started production.

Meghan Markle Says She’s the 'Most Trolled Person in the World'

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 7:46am

Meghan Markle opened up about being the "most trolled person in the world" during a stop on her tour of Australia with husband Prince Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex shared her statements while speaking with Australian students at a meeting organized by Australian mental health group Batyr in Melbourne on Thursday. Reuters reported on the discussion.

She and Harry spoke about one of their passion projects, online safety for children, with the students. Harry told the audience that he was in favor of Australia's incentive to make social media safer for children. The country was the first to ban social media for children under 16, blocking them from platforms including TikTok, Google, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

"Now we can sit here and debate the pros and cons of a ban – I'm not here to judge that. All I will say is from a responsibility and leadership standpoint – epic," Harry said.

GB News shared Meghan's comments. "And I can speak to that really personally, which is why I like to listen. Because it rings true for me in a very real way.

"For now, 10 years, every day for 10 years, I have been bullied and attacked. And I was the most trolled person in the entire world."

"And when I think of all of you and what you’re experiencing, I think so much of that is having to realize that you know that industry, that billion-dollar industry, that is completely anchored and predicated on cruelty to get clicks – that’s not going to change. So you have to be stronger than that."

The couple's involvement in this particular topic began in 2022 when they formed the Parents Network, which transitioned into ParentsTogether. They sat down with CBS Sunday Morning anchor Jane Pauley to share their thoughts about online safety measures.

"Our kids are young," Markle told Pauley.  "But all you want to do as parents is protect them. And so, as we can see what's happening in the online space, we know that there's a lot of work to be done there, and we're just happy to be able to be a part of change for good."

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's tour of Australia is expected to conclude on April 17.

Called “super cute” and “adorable” by shoppers, these glasses are designed to turn everyday hydration into something a little more enjoyable and visually satisfying. The clear glass body lets you actually see your drink, whether it’s iced coffee, soda, lemonade, smoothies, milk, cocktails, or your favorite Starbucks order.

The Most Risky State For Your Retirement Savings

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 7:29am

When it comes to real estate, it's all about location, location, location. According to a new study, the same may be true of retirement preparedness. That's because the study found that one state has residents who are decidedly less prepared for their golden years than anywhere else in the country.

Not only do the folks here have less money saved for retirement, but it sounds like they are also keeping their money in the wrong types of accounts. Curious to see if you call this state home? You can find out more below.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Mississippi Named Worst State for Retirees

SmartAsset went through and ranked 40 U.S. states—Wyoming, Vermont, Rhode Island, South Dakota, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Nebraska, Maine, Delaware, and Alaska were all left out of the report due to a lack of information—to determine which were the best and worst when it came to retirement preparedness.

Unfortunately for residents of The Magnolia State, Mississippi ranked dead last in the report, largely due to a lack of savings. According to the findings, Mississippi residents had less than half the national average tucked away for retirement, with many having only about $35,000 set aside.

Related: These Are the 3 Worst-Ranked Florida Cities to Retire In

But the issues didn't stop there. SmartAsset also found that of those with retirement savings, only 41.8 percent were in a tax-advantaged account, which offers tax exemptions or deferrals on your investments, minimizing tax obligations while increasing your savings.

Mississippi Wasn't the Only State to Get Low Marks

While Mississippi was definitely at the bottom of the SmartAsset list, it wasn't alone, and several other states landed at the bottom of the list, including:

  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Alabama
  • Oklahoma

But, the report wasn't all bad. It looks like those living in Massachusetts are doing really well with retirement planning, with a mean retirement savings of $150,000. That figure is nearly double the national average of $80,000, and 75 percent of that money was tucked away in tax-advantaged accounts.

Related: This State Was Just Named the Worst Place To Retire in the U.S.

That said, your dollar will stretch much further in Mississippi than in Massachusetts, given the cost of living in both states. And while it's easy to point at the numbers and accuse one population of being less prepared than the other, when you compare household earnings and what it costs to buy essentials in each of these areas, you're likely to see that people are on more even playing fields than it initially appears.

Of course, it's always better to have more saved for retirement than less, but the numbers aren't the only thing that you should be looking at if you live in one of the states at the bottom of the list...you may actually be doing better than you think you are when it comes to how much you'll need to spend in your golden years.

95-Year-Old William Shatner Has Had Enough: 'Get a Life!'

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 7:13am

William Shatner has had enough. The 95-year-old Star Trek legend took to Facebook this week to shut down a spreading online rumor that claimed he had secretly met with Paramount and CBSexecutives to discuss Star Trek or the recently canceled series Starfleet Academy. His message was blunt and characteristically pointed.

'For those of you chasing the latest YouTube and TikTok 'inside scoop' about me and a secret sit-down with Paramount/CBS regarding Star Trek or Starfleet Academy,' Shatner wrote, 'please do yourselves a favor and revisit my old SNL advice: Get a Life.'

He was unambiguous about the facts. 'No such meeting ever happened,' he wrote. 'Not to my knowledge, not in reality, and certainly not on this planet.'

The reference to his SNL advice is well-known to Trek fans and non-fans alike. On December 20, 1986, Shatner hosted Saturday Night Live and performed a now-legendary sketch set at a Star Trek convention, in which he told assembled fans, 'Get a life, will you people? For crying out loud, it's just a TV show.' It became one of the most quoted moments of his career, eventually lending its title to his 1999 memoir.

The rumor Shatner was swatting down this week appears to have circulated primarily through YouTube and TikTok, where AI-generated content dressed up as insider reporting claimed he and other original Star Trek cast members had confronted Paramount executives over Starfleet Academy. Various versions portrayed the alleged meeting as a dramatic showdown over the direction of the franchise. None of it was true.

Shatner saved his sharpest words not for the people who spread the story. 'What is real is a cottage industry of fiction dressed up as factual stories engineered by AI for clicks, views, and profit,' he wrote. 'Far too many of you are taking the bait.'

Earlier this month, Shatner was forced to address a separate and crueler hoax, fabricated AI-generated posts falsely claiming he was dying of Stage 4 brain cancer. He wrote on X that a Facebook group had been 'using AI to create horrible fake news stories' about his health, including fake images of him in a hospital bed, and that 'all their stories are monetized.' The false cancer posts spread widely enough to reach his daughter Lisabeth, who came to his home to check on him in person. Shatner posted a photo his daughter took of him to prove he was healthy, writing, 'I'm fit as a fiddle. You don't have to worry.'

Shatner ended his post on this latest false rumor with a note of genuine disappointment directed at the fandom itself. 'What disappoints me most isn't the nonsense,' he wrote. 'It's the eagerness to believe it, and the hostility it stirs up in a fandom that was built on something far better.' His closing advice was simple: if you don't like something, don't watch it. Spend your time with what you enjoy.

Country Superstar Brad Paisley Fell Hard for Wife Kimberly While on a Date With Someone Else

Thu, 04/16/2026 - 7:12am

Country superstar Brad Paisley was instantly smitten with actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley after seeing her on screen—while he was actually on a date with someone, setting off an unexpected twist to a love story she had no idea she was already part of.

In an interview for Live With Kelly and Mark, Williams-Paisley shared that she and the "Things We Quit" singer had recently celebrated their 23rd anniversary. They wed on March 15, 2003.

However, the actress didn't know that their love story began way before then, when Paisley went to see her 1991 film Father of the Bride with his then-girlfriend. He was smitten with the actress after seeing her portray Annie Banks in the comedy.

Williams-Paisley said, "He went to see the film with his girlfriend. Then, she kind of broke his heart and he wrote all these great songs from his heartbreak."

"Then one day he thought, 'maybe I should call that girl who was in Father of the Bride because it had been the movie with his girlfriend," the actress continued. "That's also how confident he is. He's watching a movie and he's like, 'not this girl, that girl.'"

Today, their life is far from the Hollywood beginning to their romance. The Paisley's live in Tennessee, where they raise their two children.

To celebrate their recent anniversary, Williams-Paisley asked her husband to "do something meaningful" and write her a letter. Then, they went to a "dark bar" where they watched the 2026 Academy Awards.

However, that was vastly different from their wedding ceremony, which took place, surprisingly, during their rehearsal dinner. "We had all of our friends show up for the rehearsal, they were so confused," she began.

"I came down the aisle in a denim coat with my ribbon bouquet from my bridal shower. Then I took off the coat and I had this wedding dress on," Williams-Paisley continued.

To honor their special day, the actress posted a series of photos celebrating her and Paisley's union on Instagram. She wrote a heartfelt message. "23 years today (we think, but math isn't our strong suit). Find yourself someone you can laugh with, do some good with, and hang on tight with. Then repeat. Happy anniversary Brad Paisley for the twenty-somethingth time. I love you."

I've Tried 20+ Travel Backpacks—This One Made Me Ditch the Rest

As a travel writer, I’m on a plane or train multiple times a month. That means, I’m either lugging a rolling suitcase, a trusty carry-on, or a travel backpack—and in some cases, I’m toting a couple of these items at the same time. For super quick trips, I usually opt for a simple travel backpack.

After trying countless offerings over the years, I’ve finally found one that meets my needs. The Caraa Cirrus checks all the boxes: it’s stylish, comfortable, and functional. Plus, it’s lightweight and roomy with plenty of storage to keep all my travel essentials in place.

Let’s face it, traveling can be a hassle. From flight delays to crowded security lines, traveling isn't always breezy. That’s why I try to make my experience as seamless and stress-free as possible, and this backpack helps make it effortless.

No matter if I’m flying to Chicago to visit family or heading to Aruba for a mental reset, I can guarantee this backpack won’t be left behind. Here's why:

I’ve personally tested dozens of travel backpacks over the years. While many have been decent or average at best, none have been the complete package. When testing travel backpacks, I take several things into consideration. First and foremost, it must look good. After all, if it’s not stylish, I’d never give it another glance. Secondly, functionality is a must. If it doesn’t do its primary job, then what’s the point? Finally, comfort is non-negotiable. Without ease of use, it’s virtually useless. At my age, comfort is always a top priority.

Again, I’ve traveled the world with various backpacks, but none have gotten my full stamp of approval until now.

The sleek, rucksack shape was the first thing that caught my eye. Its standout design is top loading, meaning there isn’t a zipper that goes across. Items are accessed primarily through the opening at the top, secured by a drawstring and a flap that has a side-release buckle for added security. As an overpacker, this specific design allows me to stuff more items inside the bag thanks to the top-loading design.

Available in four colorways including sage, orchid, clay and black. I have the latter because it complements my favorite Caraa carry-on. Plus, it has 11 handy pockets and compartments, but more on that later.

The Size

When it comes to traveling with ease, size matters. This backpack (15 x 13 x 7 inch) is ideal for short trips like a quick weekend getaway, but it can also be used for longer travels as a supplementary carry-on. I’ve used it for both. For example, it’s been my go-to for overnight staycations and when I want to be hands-free and not be weighed down with multiple bags. It’s also been used as an addition to my larger carry-on or rolling suitcase. Plus, it easily fits underneath the seat, so you don’t have to worry about trying to fit it inside the overhead bin, only to be told it must be removed.

The best part? It can hold up to 19lbs. I’ve packed two laptops, two pairs of flats, three tops, a couple pairs of linen pants, pajamas, my makeup bag, jewelry case, sunglasses, and a tripod. And that was just in the main compartment.

The Straps Courtesy of Caraa

Like most backpacks, it has adjustable straps to customize fit, improve comfort, and stabilize loads. The straps are padded and don’t press into skin. Plus, the backpack has a luggage sleeve. If you’re traveling with a rolling suitcase, this is a godsend when you want to give your shoulders and back a break. The convenient sleeve easily slides onto the luggage handle, allowing you to whiz through the airport or train station.

If you’re like me and love bags that have a ton of pockets and compartments, you’re in luck. Ideal for travel, this backpack has nearly a dozen. There’s one large pocket in the front and two roomy ones on both sides of the bag. All the other pockets, cardholders, and compartments are hidden and tucked away within the bag. When I first got it, it was fun fishing around to find new spaces to put all my travel essentials.

There’s even a back passport pocket, as well as a dedicated power bank pocket. As someone whose phone is never fully charged, this is a game changer. I’m always fumbling around my other bags looking for my charger. Now, I know where it is every time. There’s also a shoe and wet pouch included for storing sneakers, damp or soiled items. The zippers glide effortlessly, and I’ve never gotten anything stuck.

While this bag is as close to perfection as it gets, there is one design element that I don’t love. The water bottle pockets are inside the backpack. For me, I prefer them to be on the exterior for easy access, but that’s just one small gripe.

The Material

When I’m testing travel gear, materials are always factored into my evaluation. The more sustainable, the better. This backpack is vegan-friendly and boasts a 100% recycled water-repellent nylon shell. Plus, it's water-resistant and has an antimicrobial recycled lining as well.

The finish has a glossy, eye-catching sheen that gives it a modern and chic twist that’s unique to travel backpacks. Throughout my travels, I’ve received several compliments on it. This backpack is durable, stylish, and sustainable.

If you don’t want to drop $230 (some of the colorways are on sale for $190), there is a less expensive option that gets my vote. While it’s not as fashionable, it’s functional and sometimes that outweighs everything else, especially if the price is right. At under $50 bucks it’s a steal. Plus, it has a 4.6 out of 5.0-star rating.

Shop It!A Travel Backpack Worth the Investment

As an avid traveler, owning the right gear is important. There’s nothing more frustrating than having products that don’t hold up to their claims. That’s why quality is always at the forefront of my mind when purchasing items, especially those that require durability. Thankfully, this bag delivers across the board. It’s functional, stylish, and will get me from point A to point B without breaking down.

If you value the same things and want a travel backpack that does it all—without sacrificing style—look no further.
