1979 Punk Rock Classic, Introducing an Iconic Teenage Singer, Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’
In 1979, a fearless punk song challenging gender expectations arrived with a voice unlike anything listeners had heard before.
"Typical Girls" by The Slits was later ranked by Rolling Stone among the greatest songs of all time, cementing its reputation as one of punk's most influential and unconventional tracks.
At the center of the song was frontwoman Ari Up, who was still a teenager when the band emerged from London's late-1970s punk scene. Her wild vocal style, unpredictable energy and refusal to conform quickly made her one of punk rock's most distinctive and captivating figures.
"Typical Girls" perfectly captured that rebellious spirit.
Built around a playful but pointed critique of social expectations placed on women, the song rejected stereotypes with humor, sarcasm and jagged post-punk rhythms. Rather than sounding polished or traditionally melodic, the track embraced rawness and experimentation, helping push punk into new territory.
The Slits themselves were groundbreaking. As one of the first major all-female punk bands, they challenged the overwhelmingly male rock landscape of the era and inspired generations of female musicians across punk, alternative and riot grrrl movements.
Ari Up became especially iconic because of how young she was during the band's rise. Still in her teens, she brought an uninhibited energy to performances that felt both chaotic and completely original.
"The Slits had a great impact, but if there was a little more space for us to meet the demand of where we were heading for music and for women, and if more people would have known about it at the time, I think we would have established more ground," said Up in a 2006 interview. "Now, I think women are still struggling basically as much as we did."
Musically, "Typical Girls" also stood apart from many punk songs of the time by blending reggae influences with angular guitar work and unconventional rhythms, reflecting the band's willingness to experiment beyond traditional punk formulas.
Over the decades, the song's influence only continued to grow. Artists across alternative rock, indie and feminist punk movements frequently cited The Slits as pioneers who helped expand what punk music could sound and look like.
Its inclusion among Rolling Stone's greatest songs of all time confirmed the song's lasting cultural importance, not just as a punk classic, but as a groundbreaking statement about individuality, gender and artistic freedom.
"The Slits have become something beyond The Slits, bigger than life, bigger than our personalities," up told Loud and Quiet. "They have become very mythical. The responsibility to stay true to ourselves is huge. People need something like The Slits, even if it isn't us. Every time we play, there is always a girl who says, 'I am going to start a group.' There is always someone who tells us that we have been an inspiration or life changing. In 2010, Up died from cancer, and the song helped cement her legacy for decades to come."
More than 45 years later, "Typical Girls" still sounds daring, defiant and completely ahead of its time.
Trump Issues New Rules Around Student Loan Forgiveness, and Anyone Hoping for a Break Needs To Understand This
A Federal appeals court ended the Biden-era SAVE program that helped millions of Americans afford their monthly student loan payments. The Trump administration plans to replace it with other options with varying degrees of forgiveness and repayment.
📬 Grab the daily newsletter people actually read from Parade 📬
New Student Loan ProgramsMillions of low-income borrowers may still be able to have their loans discharged, but most will have to wait decades, as the Trump administration extends the payment window to 30 years from 25 under the Repayment Assistance Program (RAP).
Beginning July 1st, borrowers can enroll in the program, which requires them to repay 1%-10% of their current income. Many borrowers cite loan repayments as one of the largest financial hardships they’ve incurred in an economy that no longer values degrees as a pathway to better-paying jobs.
The Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) plans are still available, but the debt-forgiveness portion of these plans no longer exists. If you’re hoping to get your debt forgiven, there are other avenues you can explore.

Forgiveness PathwaysThe Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) was signed into law by George W. Bush in 2007 and offers debt cancellation to nonprofit and government workers after 10 years of service. You can even apply for the PSLF retroactively if you’ve been working in one of these fields since 2007.
Another pillar of the PSLF program is that the nonprofit or government work need not have been performed consecutively. If you worked in public service for less than 10 years, left, and came back, your total time of service will be considered. If you’re a teacher, social services worker, park ranger, or employed in any of the qualifying positions, you’ll want to look into your eligibility.
Individuals living with a permanent disability also have forgiveness options. There are program requirements, but you’ll typically need to work with your doctor on submitting the paperwork for complete forgiveness or discharge of loans.

The New RulesThe Trump administration has changed many of the rules surrounding student loan repayment, making it more difficult for borrowers to fit the expense into their monthly budgets. There are options, however, depending on the job you take or your monthly income.
It’s worth taking the time to read the new rules and regulations to find out which programs may benefit you. No matter what options are available to you, the rules surrounding them have likely changed.

1984 Nostalgic Classic Inspired by a Shocking True Story Was a No. 1 Hit 42 Years Ago
On this day in May 1984, The Natural, an instant sports classic about the rise of a gifted baseball prodigy, was the hottest ticket at the movie theater. Starring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, and Glenn Close, and directed by Oscar-winner Barry Levinson, the film had as much star power behind it as Roy Hobbs had in his final at-bat. But even more shocking than Hobbs’ electrifying home run is the true story that inspired the movie.
View this post on InstagramAdapted from Bernard Malamud’s debut 1952 novel, the story blends truth and fiction, with the truth part being way stranger than the fiction part. Mental Floss tells the story like this: “On June 14, 1949, a crazed fan lured a pro baseball player to her hotel room and shot him, point-blank, in the chest.”
Apparently, the teenage stalker holed up at Chicago’s Edgewater Beach Hotel, where the Philadelphia Phillies were staying, and carried out her plot to shoot first baseman Eddie Waitkus. When asked later why she did it, she said simply, “I’m not sure.”
Waitkus survived, with his wild story inspiring Malamud to write The Natural.
The art imitating life doesn’t end there. According to Remind magazine, Redford's character, from his swing to the number on his jersey, was borrowed from Redford’s baseball idol, Boston Red Sox icon Ted Williams. “Both were outfielders, and both hit home runs in their last career at-bats,” the outlet writes.
The film held the No. 1 spot at the box office for two weeks, according to UPI, before Indiana Jones,Star Trek, and Ghostbusters took over the throne. Raking in a whopping $48 million on a $28 million budget, the film held onto that momentum for nearly a year, as it was nominated for four Oscars at the 57th Academy Awards, including for music from the legendary Randy Newman and supporting for the iconic Glenn Close.
Today, The Natural is held in just as high regard, with best-of lists consistently name-dropping the film. From Rotten Tomatoes, The Hollywood Reporter, and Paste Magazine, to the MLB itself, the film is usually somewhere near the top of baseball movie roundups. And certainly, always at the top of our own favorite ways to revisit Redford in top form.

1971 TV Film, Winner of 5 Emmy Awards, Ranked Among ‘Best Sports Movies of All Time’
In 1971, Brian’s Song became one of the biggest events on television. The ABC Tuesday TV Movie of the week, starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams as real-life Chicago Bears teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, originally aired on Nov. 30, 1971. The made-for-TV film, which also featured Shelley Fabares, Judy Pace, and Jack Warden, attracted a massive audience and won five Emmy Awards out of a whopping 11 nominations.
Vulture described “Brian’s Song” as the "picture-perfect example of the manly sports-movie weeper” on its list of the greatest sports movies of all time.
In addition, Collider ranked the film at No. 10 on a "best sports movies of all time" list that included Rocky, A League of Their Own, The Hustler, and Raging Bull. The outlet noted that because Brian’s Song was based on true events "that had only happened a very short time before the movie came out ….it likely hit home even harder” for viewers in 1971. “When watched today, it does have its limitations as a TV movie, but it shines bright because of the tearjerking story at its center, as well as for the lead performances by Caan and Williams,” Collider added.

Must-See TVBrian's Song told the story of the interracial friendship between Brian Piccolo (Caan) and his teammate/roommate Gale Sayers (Williams) before and after Piccolo was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The movie, based on Sayers' writings about his friendship with Piccolo in his 1970 memoir I Am Third, aired on ABC a little more than a year after Piccolo died at the age of 26. The beloved running back, who died on June 16, 1970, had played with the Bears for four years, per the team’s official website.
Brian’s Song became the highest-rated made-for-TV film at the time and was even plugged by then-President Richard Nixon as “one of the great motion pictures” that every American should see, according to USA Today.
Speaking with The Guardianin 2024, Williams said the movie still holds a special place in his heart. “That whole experience was an act of love,” the actor said. “When James Caan and I met each other there was an immediate chemistry, and then working with Buzz Kulik, the director, turned into a wonderful, beautiful and very special experience.”
Brian’s Song is still remembered in the sports world as the ultimate movie tearjerker more than 50 years later. NBC sportscaster Bob Costas noted on ESPN’s Sports Century, “There's no question that Brian Piccolo's story was amplified by the movie. And now generations later, you don't know how many guys who ordinarily would be loath to admit that they shed a tear, will tell you at the drop of a hat, I still cry every time I see Brian's Song.”

The Most Affordable International Getaways for Summer 2026, According to the Numbers
Summer 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most volatile travel seasons in years, with higher fuel costs, route cuts and shifting airfare trends reshaping where Americans can afford to go. But the deals have not disappeared. They have simply moved.
According to new data from Dollar Flight Club's Summer 2026 travel report, the most affordable international getaways this year are closer to home, heavy on Latin America and the Caribbean and surprisingly strong in parts of Canada. If you are flexible about where you travel, there are still serious airfare deals to be found.
The report analyzed more than 500,000 airfare data points across 65 U.S. departure airports to determine which international destinations are consistently showing the lowest round-trip economy fares for summer travel. While Europe is seeing price spikes, short-haul international routes are holding steady.
Latin America and the Caribbean Are Leading for Affordable Summer 2026 Travel Punta Cana, Dominican RepublicIf you are searching for the most affordable international destinations for summer 2026, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean dominate the list.
According to the report, these are the most affordable international getaways right now:
- León and Guanajuato, Mexico
- San Juan, Puerto Rico
- Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
- Guatemala City, Guatemala
- San José, Costa Rica
- Mexico City, Mexico
- Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
- Nassau, Bahamas
- Montego Bay, Jamaica
Many of these destinations regularly see round-trip fares under $400 from major U.S. cities, with some routes dipping even lower depending on departure airport and timing. For travelers planning summer 2026 beach vacations, Puerto Vallarta, San Juan, and Punta Cana stand out as particularly strong value destinations.
Short-haul international flights burn less fuel than transatlantic routes, which is helping keep prices more stable. In a year when airfare pricing is highly dynamic, these markets are producing more consistent deals than Western Europe.

Canada Emerges as a Cool and Affordable International OptionOne of the more surprising findings in the summer 2026 travel data is how affordable Canada has become. The most affordable Canadian cities include:
- Toronto, Ontario
- Montreal, Quebec
- Vancouver, British Columbia
- Calgary, Alberta
Round-trip fares to several of these cities are frequently appearing under $400, making Canada one of the best-value international destinations for summer 2026. It is a rare overlap of affordability, comfortable weather and urban culture.

1977 Country Classic, Originally an Overnight Radio Anthem, Became a No. 1 Hit
Forty-eight years ago, the '70s father-daughter country duo The Kendalls topped the Billboard Country Singles chart with their smash hit "Heaven's Just a Sin Away."
Released in September 1977 as the second single and title track of their breakthrough album, "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" was an overnight sensation. Upon release, the track climbed up the Billboard Country Singles chart, peaking at No. 1 on October 8 and holding the position for four consecutive weeks. The song's success also bled into the Hot 100 chart, reaching No. 69— an impressive feat for a country duo during that era.
In addition to its chart success, the song earned significant critical recognition and commercial milestones. In 1982, the track was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 1 million copies. "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" also swept the following awards season, taking home a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and a Country Music Association (CMA) Award for Single of the Year in 1978.

Netflix’s Most Brutal Reality Show Yet Heads Into the Jungle
Netflix is taking its survival competition series Outlast somewhere much hotter for the premiere season of the spinoff.
The streamer just revealed the official trailer, premiere date and cast for Outlast: The Jungle, which drops 16 strangers into the unforgiving Panamanian jungle for a brutal fight to survive, strategize and outlast each other for a $1 million prize.
The new show premieres June 10 on Netflix.
Unlike in the two seasons of the original series, which were both set in the freezing wilderness of Alaska, Outlast: The Jungle trades snow and isolation for heat, humidity and what looks like a much more volatile social game. The newly released trailer teases shifting alliances, explosive confrontations and contestants struggling to survive in the dense jungle environment while battling exhaustion, hunger and each other.
Netflix described the season as a game where “survival becomes as much about strategy as endurance,” with contestants forced to stay in teams in order to remain in the competition.
Executive producer and showrunner Mike Odair hinted that the new setting completely transformed the series.
“This season felt like throwing gasoline on the format,” Odair said in a statement. “We traded the frozen isolation of Alaska for the heat and volatility of Panama, and everything changed: the survival, the strategy, and the social dynamics.”
He continued, “Having now seen two seasons of the game, these contestants arrived ready to test alliances and push the social experiment further than ever before, creating a season that feels more primal, unpredictable, and intense from the very start.”
The franchise first premiered on Netflix in 2023 and quickly built a following for its ruthless gameplay and survival-focused format, which forces contestants to work in teams while enduring brutal outdoor conditions. Unlike many reality competition shows, contestants can only leave the game voluntarily by firing a flare gun or through medical evacuation.
New episodes of Outlast: The Jungle will roll out over two weeks:
- Wednesday, June 10: Episodes 1-6
- Wednesday, June 17: Episodes 7-8
The season is executive produced by Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan and Emma Ho for Aggregate Films alongside Ryan O'Dowd and Krystal Whitney for BBC Studios.

TLC just announced a new reality TV show called Little Singles, and fans of the network "can't wait."
On Thursday, May 14, TLC dropped a trailer and a premiere date— June 15—for the upcoming series that follows a group of singles who all have dwarfism. The group reunites in Palm Springs after first meeting at a little people convention and remaining close since then.
"Living in an average sized world comes with daily challenges, from accessibility and social stigma to dating and self-confidence," a description of the new show reads. "In this house, everyone is on equal footing, creating a space where they can fully be themselves."
It continues, "What begins as a carefree getaway among friends quickly evolves into a chosen‑family experience. With a mix of personalities, relationship histories, and different forms of dwarfism, the group explores what love, honesty, and truly belonging really mean."

Little Singles stars John, 28, the "heart and glue of the house," and his friends, Stephanie, 32, and Sammy, 26. However, as TLC teases, "What John doesn’t know is that Stephanie, known for her big personality and even bigger heart, and Sammy, a loud and magnetic presence who thrives as the life of the party, are secretly involved."
Stephanie is looking for "something real," but Sammy "avoids labels," which creates tension. Sparks suddenly fly between Sammy and Krista, 30, and a love triangle emerges, "putting friendships at risk."
Meanwhile, JJ, 37, returns to Palm Springs "ready to open herself up to love again while bringing an unapologetic energy to the house."
Catch the series premiere of Little Singles on Monday, June 15, at 9 p.m. ET on TLC.

Beloved 1970s Rocker Returns To Welsh Town That Inspired Iconic Album—Here's Why It's Worth a Visit
Rock legend Robert Plant recently came back to a place that clearly still matters to him: the rolling hills surrounding Machynlleth, Wales. The Led Zeppelin frontman showed up to throw his support behind the town's bid to become UK Town of Culture—and his presence there speaks volumes about what the place has meant to him and his music over the decades.
Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page retreated to these Welsh hills decades ago when they were working on some of their most groundbreaking material. Away from the chaos of touring and recording studios, they hunkered down in a cottage called Bron-Yr-Aur just outside town, where inspiration struck in ways it couldn't have in a typical recording session. That's where the bones of Led Zeppelin III got built, and more importantly, where the skeleton of "Stairway to Heaven" came together—arguably one of the greatest rock songs ever written.
View this post on Instagram What Makes Machynlleth Worth the TripMachynlleth sits in the heart of the Dyfi Valley, with mountains rising up to the south—the gateway to Snowdonia National Park. It's nothing like the typical tourist destination. Often called "Mach" by locals, the town was recently ranked by Time Out as the second-most underrated place in Europe. This is a place where creative energy, epic landscapes, and centuries of Welsh history coexist harmoniously.
The town holds serious historical weight. In 1404, the Welsh leader Owain Glyndŵr held parliament here and declared himself Prince of Wales. You can visit the Owain Glyndŵr Centre to learn more about this pivotal moment in Welsh history.
Beyond the history, Machynlleth has cultivated a vibrant creative scene. The town hosts an annual Comedy Festival every May bank holiday that's become something of a cult favorite, drawing comedians and audiences who want something different from the mainstream circuit. There's also the Gŵyl Machynlleth Festival, which celebrates Welsh and international music and culture throughout the summer. MOMA Machynlleth, housed in a converted chapel, showcases contemporary Welsh art and regular performances.
The main street is lined with independent shops—the kind of places where you'll actually find thoughtful, unique goods rather than chain store duplicates. The Wednesday market, which has been running for over 700 years, still draws locals and visitors, featuring everything from handmade crafts to local produce.
For outdoors lovers, the town sits within a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve. Some three dozen hiking trails in the area weave through dense forests, alongside rivers, and across open moorland—from easy riverside walks to challenging mountain ascents. The dramatic Dyfi Forest stretches across 6,000 hectares north of town and looks like something out of a movie, thanks to moss-covered oaks surrounding bubbling streams and scattered ruins. The region also connects to the 135-mile Glyndŵr's Way National Trail, which passes directly through Machynlleth.

The Connection to Rock HistoryWhat Plant's visit really highlights is that Machynlleth isn't just important to Wales—it's woven into rock-and-roll history. This is where some of the most influential music ever created came together. Standing in those hills where Plant and Page worked, you're standing in the birthplace of what many may consider as one of rock's defining moments.
Taylor Frankie Paul Seemingly Reveals Who She Chose on 'The Bachelorette'
Taylor Frankie Paul may have just revealed who she chose on her season of The Bachelorette.
On Wednesday, May 13, one of Paul's suitors, Doug Mason, posted an Instagram Story which showed him repairing his toilet paper holder.
Later that day, Paul posted a photo of her toilet paper holder and tagged Mason, writing, "Hey @_dougmason mine broke too...can you help by chance?"

Following her story post, fans were quick to point out that Paul broke a long-standing Bachelor Nation rule restricting leads from interacting with their suitors on social media before the season finishes airing.
"Just another reason why it’s pointless for the season to be aired," one fan wrote. "Seems like all spoiler policies must be out now 😂." added another.

Paul’s season of The Bachelorette was scheduled to premiere on Mar. 22. On Mar. 19, ABC pulled the plug after TMZ released a never-before-seen video that appeared to show Paul assaulting her ex-boyfriendDakota Mortensen in 2023.
In a statement to TMZ, a Disney Entertainment spokesperson said, “In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family.”
The Draper and West Jordan police departments in Utah also opened separate domestic violence investigations regarding alleged altercations between Paul and Mortensen that occurred in February 2026.
In April, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office announced they declined to file charges against Paul for the alleged incidents.
To date, there has been no official update from ABC regarding if and when Paul's season will air.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of domestic violence, help is available 24 hours a day through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.

2014 Comedy Drama, Disliked by Critics, Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 12 Years Later
Streaming services have a way of bringing not-so-well-loved films back into rotation for a perfect watching experience. A comedy drama starring Michael Douglas and the late Diane Keaton has gotten attention on Netflix and has climbed to the charts to success.
According to Netflix's Top 10 list, the film And So It Goes has dominated the charts, landing at No. 4 on the list, beating out the animated film Home. And So It Goes is not to be confused with the 1989 Billy Joel track, but is instead a comedy film by the late director Rob Reiner in 2001. It marked the second collaboration between Reiner and Douglas after having worked together on the 1995 political romance The American President.
The cast for the film starred Douglas in the leading role of Oren Little, with Keaton as the character Leah. It also starred Sterling Jerins, Annie Parisse, Reiner as Artie, and Frances Sternhagen in her last role before her death in 2023.
And So It Goes focuses on a realtor by trade, Oren Little, who shuts out his neighbors, friends, and becomes antisocial following the death of his wife. His neighbor also lost her husband and never had any children of her own, and tries to revive a stale singing career. Oren's life takes a turn when his adult son appears on his doorstep to drop off his granddaughter, whom he never knew about.
The death of his wife has pushed Oren to have no patience for children, leaving his granddaughter to test him. As both Oren and Leah take care of the young girl, they begin to heal their wounds. And So It Goes was considered a moderate success after its release, having only made $25.3 million at the box office compared to its $18 milliom budget.

Fans called the film a "heartfelt and surprisingly engaging drama" carried by its leading stars, while others called it a feel-good movie. While some critics praised Keaton and Douglas as powerful actors, the film didn't do well amid reviews. The film has a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.9 on IMDb.
"And So It Goes aims for comedy, but with two talented stars stuck in a half-hearted effort from a once-mighty filmmaker, it ends in unintentional tragedy," reads the general consensus by Rotten Tomatoes.
Other critics aimed at Reiner's "fruitless" narrative that left little to be explored, and for its obvious ending storyline that was given away by the film's poster. Some reviews agreed that the film tugged at the heartstrings, but failed to make it a worthwhile film.

Well, if you ask us, pickled onions make a tip-top topping for pretty much anything that could use a little tang, a little texture, and a little pop of umami."

"And when it comes to appetizers and hors d’oeuvres, they’re an essential addition to nachos, mezze platters, and deviled eggs."
As with most of Trader Joe's newly launched products, the Pickled Red Onions have been met with an unwaveringly positive response across social media, with many shoppers voicing their support for the new item on Instagram.
"I'm unreasonably excited about the pickled red onions," wrote one user. "I 100% am aware it's easy to make at home but it's just one less thing I have to do and I'm all for it."
"So many things to do with those pickled red onions!" another shopper agreed.

'Today' Co-Anchor Sheinelle Jones Reveals Major Move
Today co-anchor Sheinelle Jones just revealed a major move—literally—with her three kids.
On Thursday, May 14, Jones chatted with Jenna Bush Hager during the NBC morning show's fourth hour about recently finding her wedding dress.
“I'm moving," she announced. “The kids are going to a new school, so we're moving. I have been going through boxes and boxes and boxes in our basement," per People.
Jones went on to explain that she has a ton of boxes in her basement, many from when she moved from Philadelphia to New York City, and hadn't opened them since. When her babysitter helped her go through things, Jones eventually grew tired of it.
“I started, after a while, not even wanting to look through boxes," she recounted. "I'm like, ‘Just throw it out. If I haven't seen it in five years, just throw it out.' And she's like, ‘No, Sheinelle. We've got to go through everything.'"
Thankfully, they didn't stop.

“I found this old suitcase, and I unzipped it, and it was my wedding dress," Jones explained, as a clip of her holding up the white gown played.
Jones's husband, Uche Ojeh, died at 45 in May 2025, following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. They share three children, Kayin, 16, and twins Uche and Clara, 11.
"I remember Uche and I took pictures all over the streets of Philadelphia... So now, obviously, I see it differently."
Recently, Jones reflected on celebrating her first Mother's Day since Ojeh's death, admitting it was "tough" while also sharing a silver lining.
It's unclear where she and her kids are moving, as of writing. But we wish Jones the best as she continues going through boxes and packing everything for the big move!
