1971 Heartbreaker Became First No. 1 for Legendary Duo 54 Years Ago Today
A 1971 hit that marked a major milestone for one of country music’s most iconic partnerships reached No. 1 on the charts 54 years ago today.
“After the Fire Is Gone” by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn became the duo’s first No. 1 hit together when it topped the Billboard country chart on March 27, 1971. The song not only launched one of the most successful collaborations in country music history, but also set the tone for a string of chart-topping duets that followed.
Written by L.E. White, the song tells the story of two people grappling with fading love and the emotional aftermath of a relationship that has lost its spark. With its honest lyrics and understated delivery, the track struck a chord with listeners and became one of the defining songs of the era.
The success of “After the Fire Is Gone” marked the beginning of an extraordinary run for Twitty and Lynn. Between 1971 and 1975, the duo scored five consecutive No. 1 hits, including “Lead Me On,” “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man,” “As Soon as I Hang Up the Phone” and “Feelins’.”
Their chemistry and storytelling made them one of the most beloved duos in country music. They were named Vocal Duo of the Year by the Country Music Association for four years in a row and earned multiple honors from the Academy of Country Music and the American Music Awards.
“After the Fire Is Gone” also earned the pair a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, further cementing its place as a landmark recording in their catalog.
The song’s chart success was notable not just for reaching No. 1, but for its staying power. It spent two weeks at the top of the chart and remained on the country chart for a total of 14 weeks, reflecting its widespread popularity.
Today, the track remains one of the most enduring duets of the early 1970s, remembered as the song that launched a historic partnership between two of country music’s most influential artists.
As it reached No. 1 on this day in 1971, “After the Fire Is Gone” marked the beginning of a collaboration that would define an era.

2000s Metalcore Band Frontman Seeks Support After Health Crisis
HORSE The Band’s frontman, Nathan Winneke, is currently confronting a serious health struggle.
The metalcore band, known for their unique music blending heavy, technical riffs with retro gaming sound chips, has built a devoted following through their one-of-a-kind music.
During the band’s breakthrough in the 2000s, they delivered a string of notable songs, including their signature hits "Cutsman" as well as "Birdo" and "Murder".
However, amid their continued success, their frontman is facing a major setback with his health.
Winneke revealed he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disorder of the nervous system affecting the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.
According to Mayo Clinic, in patients with MS, the immune system “attacks the protective covering of the nerve cells in the brain and optic nerve,” which eventually “interrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body.”
The vocalist’s health status led him to launch a GoFundMe page seeking financial support for his medical expenses.

“My name is Nathan, and I’m reaching out for support as I navigate life with Multiple Sclerosis. Since my diagnosis, the medical bills have piled up quickly, and the illness has made it impossible for me to continue working. On top of managing my health, I also have a family who depends on me, which makes this journey even more challenging,” the statement reads as mentioned on his page.
The 49-year-old musician also explained the impact of MS on his life and family and expressed appreciation for any support, especially during this difficult time.
“The funds raised will go directly toward my ongoing treatments, medications, and the monthly expenses that have become difficult to manage. Every bit of support will help ease the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus on my health and well-being. Living with MS means facing new obstacles every day, from physical symptoms to emotional stress, and your support can make a real difference in my life. I’m grateful for any help you can offer, whether it’s a donation or simply sharing my story. Thank you for taking the time to read about my situation and for considering a contribution to help me and my family during this difficult time,” the message says.
His fundraising goal is $12,000 and he has nearly raised $7,000 as of this writing.
Amid the absence of their frontman, the cult-favorite Nintendocore pioneers have a list of shows lined up this year.
This includes joining Dance Gavin Dance as a performer along with the bands The Fall of Troy, Wolf & Bear and Novelists.
The show will kick off in June in Texas and wrap up in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 1.

1965 Timeless Classic Ranked Among ‘Greatest Country Songs of All Time’ Became a Long-Running No. 1 Hit
On March 27, 1965, 61 years ago today, Roger Miller topped the U.S. Billboard Country Singles chart with his timeless classic country hit, “King of the Road.” The track remained in the No. 1 spot for five weeks, selling over 10 million records.
The beloved track also earned the iconic singer-songwriter five trophies at the eighth annual Grammy Awards in 1966. They were for Best Contemporary (R&R) Single, Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance — Male, Best Country and Western Single, Best Country and Western Vocal Performance — Male, and Best Country and Western Song.
Written by Miller and produced by Jerry Kennedy, “King of the Road” finds the iconic Texas-born singer crooning, with a mix of lighthearted humor, confidence, and pride, about a poor, nomadic lifestyle as a down-on-his-luck hobo. He paints a vivid picture of life’s moments that come by chance, as he spends his days drifting from place to place, hopping on trains, and wearing worn-out shoes.
Despite his lack of material wealth, Miller’s song shares a message of satisfaction due to independence and the idea of embracing freedom over financial security.
The LyricsDeclaring himself a 'King of the Road,' Miller joyfully sings the lyrics: “trailers for sale or rent / Rooms to let, 50 cents / No phone, no pool, no pets / I ain't got no cigarettes / Ah, but, two hours of pushin' broom / Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room / I'm a man of means by no means / King of the road.”
Though the inspiration for the song remains unclear, various stories on how Miller came up with the song lyrics have been passed around over the years. According to Kivitv.com, he often wrote: “songs while on the road, scribbling down lyrics…. between all his concerts and TV appearances.”
One rumor, according to the source, suggests Miller wrote the song from a memory in Boise, Idaho, while others claim he saw “a sign reading ‘Trailers for Sale or Rent,’” which became the opening line of the song.
The Song Was Heard All Over the WorldWhile “King of the Road” is known for being a major country hit, the song enjoyed crossover and international success, reaching the No. 4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and topping both the UK Singles and Norwegian charts. The timeless classic also placed at No. 60 on Rolling Stone’s 2024 list of 200 Greatest Country Songs of all Time.
Miller passed away on October 25, 1992, at age 56, following a battle with lung and throat cancer. Since then, his song has continued to be a significant part of his legacy, with covers by artists such as Randy Travis, R.E.M., George Jones, and more.

William Shatner Remembers Leonard Nimoy in Moving Tribute
William Shatner is remembering his late Star Trek: The Original Series co-star Leonard Nimoy.
On March 26, Shatner took to his Instagram account to celebrate Nimoy's 95th birthday. The post featured a picture of Shatner, who famously played Captain James T. Kirk, and Nimoy, who portrayed the iconic half-Vulcan Mr. Spock, at what appears to be a signing booth. Nimoy died in 2015 following a battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
"Remembering Leonard on what would have been his 95th Birthday," wrote Shatner in the caption.
Several Star Trek fans flocked to the post's comments section to share that they appreciated Shatner's upload.
"We celebrate him. That’s how he’s still with us," wrote a commenter.
"What a wonderful photo. I read your book about him. What an amazing man he was. I quit smoking because of him. He was so special. As are you," added another.
"I literally had a dream about him last night. I told him about how there are clips from him all over the Internet and everybody just still loves his character so much. He did such a great job as Spock. There really isn’t anyone that could compare!" shared a different person.
"Touching photo Thank you so much for sharing From the beginnings until now STAR TREK is an important part of my life Love all characters and the wonderful personalities who embodied them," commented a fan.
William Shatner Discussed His and Leonard Nimoy's Dynamic in a 2022 InterviewNimoy and Shatner starred in Star Trek: TOS throughout its three-season run, which ended in 1969. The pair reprised their beloved characters in several Star Trek films, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, per IMDb.
While speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2022, Shatner said that he and Nimoy had a difficult dynamic shortly before he died.
"At the end I don't know what happened. He just wouldn't answer my calls. I wrote him a heartfelt letter saying how much I loved him and I wished him well 'cause he was dying and I wanted to see him," said Shatner, now 95.
According to Shatner, Nimoy's daughter, Julie Nimoy, told him that his Star Trek co-star "loved" him. In addition, Shatner said he was choosing to believe that Nimoy had pulled away because he had gotten so ill and "didn't want to see anybody."
During a 2024 interview with Page Six, Nimoy's son, Adam Nimoy, said he was privy to his father's decision to pull away from Shatner but won't reveal what happened. In addition, he told the publication that Shatner and Nimoy had “a period of time where they were really beautifully together," even though they weren't always on the best of terms while they were Star Trek co-stars.
"Now they had some reconciliation and it was beautiful, but it just didn’t. They just couldn’t sustain it. And that’s unfortunate," said Adam.

1978 Classic Ranked ‘Greatest Song’ From the Kings of Guitar Shred
They released 12 studio albums, three live albums, and four compilations. Their discography includes more than 100 recordings, 56 of which were charting singles. And they survived three distinct reinvention eras from 1974 to 2020.
Van Halen are rock legends behind an expansive, ever-evolving catalog that speaks to their staying power in the modern day. It’s a remarkable body of work to explore and one that MetalTalk eagerly took on the task of ranking.
View this post on InstagramAn online source dedicated to heavy metal journalism, the outlet published “Van Halen / 20 Greatest Songs - Ranked!,” and you might be surprised by the results.
At No. 20, they have “Outta Space (A Different Kind of Truth),” and then they strum through “Light Up the Sky” at No. 18, “The Dream Is Over” at No. 11, and “Running With the Devil” at No. 4.
“Jump,” the riff masters’ only track to ever reach No. 1 on the Billboard chart, didn’t even make the cut. It was mentioned, though – alongside No. 16 “House of Pain” and No. 9 “I’ll Wait,” both of which the source says are “far superior to ‘Jump,’” with the latter elevated by a “brilliant” guitar solo.
Best Van Halen Song of All TimeAt the top, they have “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love.” Released in 1978, the track, per the outlet, defines Van Halen and “still sounds fresh today.”
The track features lyrics by the band's debut lead singer, David Lee Roth, and music written by their guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist, Eddie Van Halen. It’s Track 4 off their self-titled debut album. And interestingly, Eddie wasn’t a fan of it in its early days because of the limited chords it required to play it.
According to the American Songwriter, that was by design, as the idea behind the song was to poke fun at the punk rock movement of the time.
“Eddie Van Halen wrote the music for ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’ as a way of slyly parodying the ethos of the punk rockers who were so prevalent in the late ’70s,” AS shares. “That’s why the song is relatively simple in terms of having just a few chords. In fact, Eddie felt slightly embarrassed about the song when he showed it to his bandmates.”
Good thing he did, though, because the song is a banger still today.
“If you were to be asked which song defines Van Halen, this would be it,” MetalTalk writes. “A riff that still sounds fresh today, a bassline every budding bassist wants to learn, drums that drive like a freight train, and vocals that tell a story.”
They add, “As for the solo, it’s not an overblown shred-fest, but a considered, well-structured accompaniment. This song has everything. Pure perfection.”
Widely considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Van Halen have received praise both critically, with Classical Rock, Louder, Forbes, and Rolling Stone all singing the rock gods’ praises, and commercially, with fans buying up more than 80 million albums worldwide. And we are talkin’ bout love. Lots of love.

1965 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Hit No. 1 61 Years Ago Today
"Stop! In the Name of Love" by The Supremes hit No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 61 years ago today!
On March 27, 1965, the lead single on The Supremes' sixth album, More Hits by The Supremes, reached the top spot after steadily climbing the charts following its release on Feb. 8, 1965.
The track held the No. 1 position on the pop singles chart from March 27 through April 3, and reached the number 2 position on the soul chart.
With "Stop! In the Name of Love," The Supremes became the first act with four consecutive No. 1 singles on the Hot 100. Diana Ross and her groupmates Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard would extend their streak to five with "Back in My Arms Again" later that year.

In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked "Stop! In the Name of Love" No. 254 on their list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
According to the outlet, Lamont Dozier of Motown’s Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team came up with the idea for the track after his girlfriend at the time caught him cheating at a motel.
“This particular girl was very headstrong,” he recalled, per Rolling Stone. “So we got into an argument. She started swinging, missed me, hit the floor. And I laughed and said, ‘Please stop! Stop in the name of love.’”
The absurdity of the moment stopped the fight, and Dozier knew immediately it would be great material for a song.
61 years later, "Stop! In the Name of Love" is still remember for its signature choreography, which involved one hand on the hip and the other outstretched in a "stop" gesture. The Supremes first performed it on an episode of the ABC variety program Shindig! which aired on Feb. 24, 1965.
1978 Timeless Classic Was a No. 1 Hit Song 48 Years Ago Today
March 26, 1978, marked a milestone in country music history when Crystal Gayle’s soulful ballad, “Ready for the Times to Get Better,” climbed to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
Written by Allen Reynolds, the track became Gayle’s fourth number-one hit, solidifying her place as one of the era’s leading country-pop voices. Nearly five decades later, the song remains a timeless favorite, cherished by fans around the world.
Crystal Gayle, born Brenda Gail Webb on Jan. 9, 1951, in Paintsville, Kentucky, was already gaining traction in the music industry when “Ready for the Times to Get Better” was released as a single in January 1978.
The song first appeared on her 1976 album Crystal and quickly became a signature piece in her repertoire.
The song dominated the charts, spending ten weeks on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart and reaching number three on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart. It also achieved notable success in Canada, topping the RPM Country Tracks chart and peaking at number four on the Adult Contemporary charts. Its appeal even crossed over to pop radio, marking a modest but significant entry on both U.S. and Canadian pop charts.
The timeless nature of Gayle’s 1978 hit is evident in the many artists who have covered the song. Marshall Chapman included it on her 1977 album Me, I'm Feelin’ Free, while Joe Sun’s 1980 rendition reached number 43 on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart.
Internationally, Agnes Chan adapted it into Cantonese as “Mayflower” in 1980. More recently, artists like Cody Jinks and Billy Strings have kept the song alive for contemporary audiences. The Million Dollar Band even performed it on an episode of the popular TV show Hee Haw.
Gayle’s original recording has also appeared in pop culture, most notably in the Roadshow edition of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. While it wasn’t included on the soundtrack album, its presence in the film underscores the song’s lasting emotional resonance.
At 75, Crystal Gayle remains a beloved figure in country music, though recent health challenges have slowed her public appearances.
In January 2026, she revealed to People that a meniscus injury prevented her from performing at the Your Roots Are Showing conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
“These things happen and you don’t want it to,” she said. “I’ve never had anything like this … mentally, you’re going through a ‘why me?’”
Despite this setback, Gayle continues to perform across the U.S., with 2026 tour dates in Nevada, Texas and Florida.
Moreover, Gayle remains active in promoting her music, contributing new tracks to multi-artist albums and keeping her extensive catalog accessible to new generations.
As fans celebrate the 48th anniversary of this country classic, it’s clear that Crystal Gayle’s music remains timeless, ready to lift spirits “for the times to get better,” now and always.

On Opening Day, Tom Hanks' New Baseball Movie is Being Shopped in Hollywood
The nicest guy in Hollywood may have won his Oscars for other movies, but one of Tom Hanks' most scene-stealing roles dates back to 1992 with A League of Their Own.
And now — nearly 35 years later — Hanks, 69, is returning to sports genre of cinema with yet another baseball project that's currently experiencing a bidding war in Hollywood, media sources including Deadline report.
What makes the film package so "hot" (as they say in the biz) is that the A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood star is reteaming with Marielle Heller — the director of his acclaimed Mister Rogers film released in 2019.
Based on a short story by Pulitzer Prize finalist Dave Eggers, The Comebacker was written as a feature by Heller, 46, and is called "a love letter to baseball," Deadline noted on Thursday, March 26 (which happens to be Opening Day for certain Major League Baseball teams). Hanks plays the pitching coach of a major league pitcher whose life is upended when he's hit in the head by a line drive on the mound. His life then changes in all kinds of ways...
Three studios are reportedly vying for the project, but Variety says Sony Pictures is in pole position to win the film thanks to an attractive offer and its history — since it was Sony that released Hanks and Hellers' A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
Variety also noted that Grammy-winner Bad Bunny and Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo are apparently eyeing roles in the project, though their hypothetical roles remain unclear.
And when it comes to Hanks, fans are thrilled to see him continue to star in buzzy movies. It's hard to believe that earlier this month marked 42 years since his box-office hit Splash was released in theaters, for example. Directed by Ron Howard, the romantic comedy stars Daryl Hannah as a mermaid named Madison, who reunites and falls in love with Allen Bauer (Hanks), whom she saved from drowning 20 years earlier.
