“My partner. My big brother. Over the many photos we’ve taken over the years, this one is still my favorite. Dancing and laughing. It’s what we do,” Slater began.
“Nothing I can write seems ok. All those who had the pleasure of having you in their lives are blessed. Forever changed by your brilliance. We got to have these beautiful years sharing life together. It started with being dance partners, and I was beyond excited to be dancing with you, and it continued into the deepest of friendships. You, Kimberly, and the kids became family, and I found so much purpose in our little community. Watching your love for your family changed my life.”
Van Der Beek’s wife Kimberly had earlier confirmed that the Dawson’s Creek alum passed peacefully following his battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer.

“I’m so grateful for you and all you have done for me. Your kindness, patience and empathy for others is unmatched. Your wise advice. I will always marvel at the ability you had to master everything. Your schoolboy laugh, I will never forget. I’m so grateful that I got to see you on Sunday, to talk to you, and to tell you for the millionth time how much I love you. We laughed together. And I promised I would feel your presence always, as I already have. Thank you ❤️”
She concluded with a promise that clearly speaks to the depth of their bond.
“I’m lucky to have known the man that you are. You have done so much, helped so many people. You’ll be forever in my heart. And now I know whenever I’m guided, I’ll be guided by you 🤍 I love you, partner.”

'80s Band Announces First Album in 12 Years
Though this rock band has put out multiple cover albums over the past decade, Laibach will finally be releasing their first album with original songs since 2014 this May.
Over the past 12 years, Laibach has been focusing on touring and putting out cover albums and remastered versions of their older hits. In September 2018, they released The Sound of Music, a reinterpretation of the soundtrack of the musical with the same name that also includes Korean folk songs such as "Arirang" and was inspired by their performance in North Korea in 2015, while their most recent album, Alamut, are re-recordings of songs performed with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and the Human Voice Ensemble.

On Wednesday, the Slovenian rock band announced via Instagram that they will be releasing their new album, MUSIK, on May 1 via Mute Records. In addition, the lead single, "Allgorhythm (feat. Wiyaala)" is out now on all streaming platforms.
"Allgorhythm, the opening statement from Laibach’s new album MUSICK has arrived," the band wrote in their caption. "MUSICK celebrates the present moment with a distinctive ‘Laibachian’ twist."
View this post on InstagramAccording to a statement shared with Consequence of Sound, this upcoming project is "the most pop outing to date" and dips into many other pop genres such as J-Pop and K-Pop. MUSIK is set to have 10 new tracks, and is produced by Richard X, alongside the band, with mixing by Marc Urselli.
"Our primary influence and reference point remained Laibach itself," the group wrote in a press release, "in all our shades, variations, and historical transformations."
Milan Fras of Laibach performs during the 'Opus Dei Revisited' tour at Islington Assembly Hall on February 22, 2025, in London, England.Formed in the mining town of Trbovlje, Slovenia, they represent the musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK), a political art collective that formed in Slovenia in 1984, when the Socialist Republic of Slovenia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Much of the art and work the NSK does reflects the themes of the complicated relationship between Slovenia and Germany.
Much of their early work, such as their self-titled debut album, Nova Akropola and Opus Dei, was more industrial rock marked by heavy rhythms and strong vocals, while their later albums featured more samples from more pop and classical music. Since its formation in the 1980s, they have released 24 studio albums, two EPs and multiple live and compilation albums. Their most recent project that includes new and original music was their 2014 record, Spectre.
Laibach has gone through multiple lineup changes over the years, but their main band goes by the pseudonyms Eber, Saliger, Dachauer and Keller. Meanwhile, their touring band includes Milan Fras, Ivan "Jani" Novak, Marina Mårtensson, Vitja Balžalorsky, Bojan Krhlanko, Luka Jamnik and Rok Lopatič.

People Are Freaking Out Over Trader Joe's Dupe of Outback's Most Famous Appetizer
Trader Joe's is coming in strong with a lineup of new products in February. Between its Pizza Bianca, which features a creamy Parmesan sauce, three types of melty cheese and a smattering of onions and rosemary, its fig-flavored whole milk yogurt cups, and morning buns with a flaky crescent roll-style dough, cinnamon-sugar filling, and orange zest, TJ's is making sure we are feeling cozy and well-fed this winter.
Perhaps most importantly, Trader Joe's dropped a rendition of Outback Steakhouse's most popular appetizer—the Bloomin' Onion. The cult-favorite Aussie-style dish features a whole onion that's strategically cut to resemble a blossoming flower, allowing every onion petal to be coated in batter and fried until impossibly crispy. It's served with a savory yet slightly spicy dip with notes of tangy horseradish that people can't get enough of.
Trader Joe's Sells a Bloomin' Onion DupeTrader Joe's
And now, you can make a Bloomin' Onion dupe in the comfort of your own home, thanks to Trader Joe's. Its adaptation, appropriately named Onion Flowers, includes two crispy fried onions per 10.58-ounce box and can be baked in the oven or air-fried. It also happens to be vegan, with a seasoning mixture of salt, pepper and garlic.
While fans of Outback Steakhouse's Bloomin' Onion swear by the sauce it comes with, the Trader Joe's option doesn't come with sauce. Reddit users who have tried the Onion Flowers recommend TJ's Magnifisauce, a blend of mayo, ketchup, mustard, and relish (a burger sauce, if you will), or In-N-Out sauce, while others suggest ranch or spicy mayo.
Trader Joe's exclaims, "We also emphatically recommend pairing them with something savory, spicy, and/or creamy to dunk the Onion 'petals' into—our (also vegan) Spicy Dynamite Sauce is always an excellent option."
What Are Shoppers Saying About Trader Joe's Onion Flowers? While some folks call the Onion Flowers "delicious" and "so good", many others shared that the directions listed on the package did not cook them properly. Most users reported that 15 minutes in the air fryer produced a mushy center with burnt onion petal ends, while others noted it needed more time in the oven or air fryer to cook through.
Thankfully, Reddit users shared their tips for perfectly cooked Onion Flowers. Some suggested microwaving it for one to two minutes first, then finishing it in the air fryer to achieve that trademark crispiness. Others claimed it turned out better in the oven; it simply took a bit longer than air frying.

"Mine came out great, but I used the air crisp function on my air fryer and left it in for the max amount of time listed in the instructions. The middle wasn't as crispy as the ends, but it was not at all soggy," said one fan. A TikTok user commenting on an I-tried-it video gave their own unhinged suggestion: "Honestly, 10/10. Got them and they were soooo good and I recommend putting them in a burger. I swear it's chef's kiss."
Another person had a not-so-great review. "Despite having it pictured on the box, it doesn't come with sauce. The middle is kind of just a mess even with extra time in the air fryer. The bits that do cook and crisp up are nice, but it's nowhere near as good as an actual Bloomin' Onion."
Onion Flowers' Availability and PriceIf you decide to give it a try, it may be worth altering the cooking method to achieve the best results. Trader Joe's is selling these Onion Flowers for a limited time for $5.95. Perhaps expecting them to be as good as a fresh-out-of-the-deep-fryer Outback Steakhouse Bloomin' Onion is a fault, but if you have a hankering and don't want to pay restaurant prices, the TJ's version may be a decent runner-up.

7 Things High-Level Narcissists Absolutely Hate—and Why You Should Do Them
You may hear the word "narcissist" and think: "I've met one of those." Perhaps it's someone in your life who makes everything about themselves, who lacks proper empathy for others or who's just plain arrogant. Whatever makes them a narcissist—or a high-level narcissist—any one or all of those scenarios could point to something deeper.
It's no secret that it can be hard to interact with a narcissist, let alone a high-level one—someone with more severe narcissistic traits. It's not only crucial to figure out how to deal with them, but to decipher how to protect our own mental and emotional health when doing so. While the Grey Rock Method—ignoring them and not giving in to their prodding—is a key tactic when dealing with narcissism, sometimes there are actions you can take or things you can do that don't give them what they want. In fact, they might just hate it.
So, what is it that narcissists hate? Are there certain boundaries or principles that impede their behaviors? Some actions might be very much disliked by them, but it's vital to invoke them anyway, in way of shielding your own self.
According to experts, there are lots of things that high-level narcissists absolutely hate—and they suggest why they might be worth doing anyway. The psychologists also explain more about what a high-level narcissist is and what you should be aware of when this type of individual gets angry.

In general, narcissists can display many different traits, such as entitlement, arrogance, a focus on physical appearance and the need to be greatly admired—to name a few.
While some people can be narcissistic or have narcissistic tendencies—maybe you even call them narcissists—they might not have the clinical disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Those with NPD are described by the Mayo Clinic as people who display "an unreasonably high sense of their own importance. They need and seek too much attention and want people to admire them. People with this disorder may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others."
So, how is a narcissist different than a high-level narcissist? While high-level NPD is not technically a clinical term according to some psychologists, it can be colloquially used to describe people who showcase this definition in extremities.
Dr. Tammy Causey, PhD., a licensed psychologist, agrees with this and highlights that a high-level narcissist would most likely meet every single trait that a typical narcissist is supposed to have. Ultimately, it's more important to zero in on the "intensity" of those traits.
"For instance, if you have the inability to express empathy, then for some people who are more low-level, they understand a few things from your viewpoint," she says. "Whereas for somebody who's more high-level, that capacity isn't there at all."
Related: Gaslighters Hate When You Do These 9 Things (So Do Them Anyway)
According to Dr. Maya Klein, PhD.—who is a licensed psychologist and psychoanalyst—a high-level narcissist will hate when you try and protect your self-esteem, mainly due to traits that rule them, such as arrogance and self-importance.
"Try to put yourself first," she says. "And if you're feeling unlovable or you're not emotionally getting what you need, knock on someone else's door who might genuinely give you more fuel for your sense of self."
Dr. Causey explains that with a high-level narcissist, it's especially important to be firm in what you want.
"You have to be very clear in your communication," she tells Parade.
And as she says: "They're probably not going to like that."
"They have certain needs that are so high in terms of praise and wanting a connection, but not knowing how," she explains. "So you just have to be firm with not getting caught up in that part of the game."
If you always give calm responses, a narcissist will hate that. Why? because it eliminates what Dr. Lainey Butler, PhD., a licensed psychologist, calls "the feedback loop."
"Calm responses can include not engaging in defensiveness, begging to be heard or further escalating the situation," she explains. "Strong emotional reactions during an interaction with a person exhibiting narcissistic patterns can reinforce the very dynamics people are trying to escape.
The other reason why they may hate when you respond calmly is that it plays into their need for control, too. By giving them calm responses, this action can "communicate a level of emotional independence," Dr. Butler says, adding, "Which again, reduces the sense of control or power the person might feel.
Dr. Butler says setting boundaries with a high-level narcissist could cause friction, but it eventually leads to your own sense of peace.
"In essence, boundaries are a communication of what you will and will not accept from another person," she explains. "Stating boundaries does not have to include over-explaining yourself, or engaging in a back-and-forth negotiation of what is and isn’t okay for you (if that were the case, these kinds of conversations could last weeks!). "
Clear, consistent boundaries can be helpful when engaging with a person exhibiting those more covert "high-level" narcissistic traits because doing so serves to limit their control, which often underlies this kind of interpersonal relationship, according to Dr. Butler.
A narcissist will hate when you don't give in to praising them constantly, says Dr. Causey, mainly because it's what they desire at all times.
"That's exactly what they want," she states. "If you're the one giving it all the time, though, you're going to be drained."
Dr. Klein says if this type of person has hurt you and you want to share that with them, they'll dislike this because they're "organized around shame and envy."
She says if you feel wronged by them, but are aware of how defensive they get when they feel shame, don't shy away from saying your true feelings anyway.
"Don't avoid telling them how they've hurt you, for fear of evoking their shame," she shares.
Most narcissists will not want to get treatment and will despise that suggestion, because it means "they're flawed and that's just terrible for them to know," says Dr. Klein.
However much they do hate it, she shares that suggesting getting any kind of help— especially to a loved one—is a crucial step in the right direction for both parties.
"Sometimes the highly narcissistic person is open to life-coaching, executive coaching and that kind of gets the foot in the door for more intensive types of therapy," she explains.
Beneath even the most highly narcissistic people are two feelings: depression and depletion, according to Dr. Klein. Because of this, their words can often turn into something more painful. However, when this does occur, she says to keep in mind that words will not always turn into physical actions.
"It's important for people to remember that while someone's words can be hurtful, in terms of being scared of physical aggression, it's not always going to be the case [that] the verbal acts of aggression are going to turn into physical ones," she shares.
When it does, though, she suggests simply walking away: "Getting into some sort of argument with them is not going to go anywhere," she states.
Similarly, Dr. Causey says that you shouldn't engage with those high emotions.
"Us as humans, if somebody gets angry, then we're either going to get angry or frustrated too and then we may express that," she shares.
She suggests keeping your voice calm and letting your own emotional reaction become part of that.
"With this person, it's just like adding fuel to the fire," she explains. "You don't want to escalate it."
Oftentimes, though, your reaction to a high-level narcissist's anger comes "preemptively," according to Dr. Butler. She says that considering the context is what will help determine what you should do in any given situation.
"In some situations, disengagement or boundary setting can increase emotional or physical risk, so people need to assess their individual circumstances and supports before acting," she explains.
When reacting to an angry narcissist, evaluating that person's background is key as well.
For example, you might want to consider if there's "been a history of threats and retaliation—or [if] you’re physically or financially dependent on them," Dr. Butler notes.
"If considerations like these are relevant, safety could guide decision-making while a desire to engage in a new relational pattern is put on the back burner," she states.

James Van Der Beek Revealed Why ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Remains So Beloved Months Before His Death
ActorJames Van Der Beek died on February 11 following a battle with colorectal cancer. He was 48 at the time of his death, as reported by TMZ.
Van Der Beek's breakout role was Dawson Leery in the beloved WB teen drama, Dawson's Creek. Van Der Beek discussed the show's lasting legacy during a panel at the Steel City Con, alongside his Dawson's Creek co-star, Kerr Smith, in April 2025.
Van Der Beek, who starred in the series throughout its six-season run until 2003, said he thought Dawson's Creek still resonates with its multigenerational fanbase because the show's characters "were very sincere." He said he believed Dawson and his friend group, which included Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), and Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams), genuinely "cared about trying to do the right thing" and "were very well intentioned." In addition, Van Der Beek said that he and his co-stars were "really completely committed" to their roles, which added to their performances.
He also shared his opinion about younger generations watching Dawson's Creek. According to Van Der Beek, his 15-year-old daughter, Olivia's friends were watching the series.
"I think it's amazing. I mean, some of my daughter's friends say that they watch the show. I'm like, 'Really?' I think we didn't have cell phones. And I think maybe that's part of the appeal," said Van Der Beek, who shared six children with his wife, Kimberly Brook.
He then quipped that he didn't allow his daughter to watch Dawson's Creek because he didn't "think she need[ed] to watch her dad pretend to go through puberty."
James Van Der Beek Shared When He Knew 'Dawson's Creek' Was a HitDuring the April 2025 panel, Van Der Beek shared when he knew Dawson's Creek was popular. He said that he was initially skeptical that the show was going to be successful. He explained that he had starred in a movie which was supposed to be a hit when he "was 17," three years before he was cast as Dawson. The actor shared that the film was a flop, which led him to believe Dawson's Creek also wouldn't be successful.
He said that it wasn't until he made an appearance in Seattle did he realize Dawson's Creek would change his career for the better.
"I was doing an appearance in Seattle and they said, 'Oh, there are going to be a hundred people here.' I'm like, 'There are not going to be a hundred people.' And they were like 500 and they were screaming and I was like, 'Whoa, this thing is like way bigger than I ever thought it would be,'" recalled Van Der Beek during the 2025 Steel City Con.
James Van Der Beek’s Friends Share Heartbreaking Photos From His Final Days Before His Death
James Van Der Beek felt the support of his friends in the days leading up to his death.
After news broke that the Dawson’s Creek alum died on Wednesday, February 11, at age 48 following a battle with colorectal cancer, tributes from his loved ones poured in, with some featuring photos from Van Der Beek’s final days.
Stacy Keibler shared a picture that showed her kneeling beside Van Der Beek as he sat in a wheelchair watching the sunset.
“Spending these final days with you has been a true gift from God. I have never been so present in my life,” the former WWE star, 46, wrote via Instagram on Wednesday. “When you know time is sacred, you don’t waste a single breath. You don’t rush. You don’t scroll. You don’t worry about tomorrow. You sit. You listen. You hold hands. You watch the sky change colors and you let it change you too.”
She continued: “In these past days, you taught me more about being present than any book ever could. You showed me what it looks like to trust God’s plan, even when it breaks your heart. Especially when it breaks your heart. The other night we watched the sunset together as you shared your wisdom, your hopes and the promises we made to each other. We talked about how this world can feel upside down … and how maybe heaven needs your spirit now to help steady us down here. And just as the sun slipped away, a shooting star crossed the sky … as if to remind us that none of this is random.”

While complimenting Van Der Beek’s skills as a husband and father, Keibler noted that for her, it had “been an honor to stand beside your family in these sacred moments.”
Keibler also pointed out Van Der Beek’s enduring positivity amid his grueling health battle.
“It’s pretty incredible how someone can fight so hard for so long, travel the world battling so much and somehow still look so handsome doing it. That smile never left you,” she recalled. “You have given this world so many gifts. Your presence was a bright light in my life and in so many others. And while your physical body may no longer be here, I know your spirit is doing big things. I feel it already.”
Keibler concluded by sharing how she will choose to remember Van Der Beek.
“I will think of you every time I watch a sunset. Every time I see a rainbow stretch across the sky. I’ll know you’re there,” she wrote. “And maybe the lesson you leave us with is this: The present moment is everything. Love the people in front of you. Say the words. Watch the sunset. Trust God, even when you don’t understand. Thank you for changing me. I will carry you with me. Always.”
Meanwhile, Erin Fetherston posted a photo of herself at Van Der Beek’s bedside as the two held hands and smiled brightly at each other.
“Thank you for your friendship,” the designer, 44, wrote via Instagram on Wednesday. “For always showing up. For being the one who would go the extra mile.”
She added: “What an honor it was to have a seat at your table and to call you a best friend. The space you leave behind can never be filled, but we will do our best to shower your beautiful family with love and remember to keep dancing in your honor—because you always knew the importance of joy. We love you. Always.”
Alfonso Ribeiro and Mehcad Brooks were also among the friends who spent time with Van Der Beek in his final days.
“Being able to say goodbye this weekend will always live with me,” Ribeiro, 54, noted in a Wednesday Instagram post, while Brooks, 45, commented on the social media platform, “Being there with you these past days has been the greatest honor of my life.”
Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023 and went public with his illness in November 2024. His family confirmed his death via Instagram on Wednesday.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the statement read. “He met his final days with courage, faith and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.”
James Van Der Beek Honored by ‘Don’t Trust the B----’ Costar Krysten Ritter With Never-Before-Seen Photos
Actress Krysten Ritter is honoring her former Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 costar James Van Der Beek after the actor's tragic death at 48.
The duo starred in the cult-favorite series from 2012 to 2014. Ritter played Chloe, a nightmarish roommate to good girl June, played by Dreama Walker. However, it was Van Der Beek who stole the show, playing an intensely fictionalized version of himself, desperately attempting to claw his way back into the limelight after losing his grip on his early stardom. The actor, who also appeared in series like Dawson's Creek, CSI: Cyber, and Pose, showed a natural ability to flow between comedy and drama with ease.
In a series of candid snaps, Ritter showed her close relationship with Van Der Beek.
"Really hard news today," Ritter captioned the first photo, which was posted to her Instagram Stories. The candid shot, a selfie taken by Van Der Beek, showed the duo smiling while standing on the streets of New York.

In the second slide, Ritter called Van Der Beek a "beautiful human inside and out."
"Smart, funny, empathetic, kind, talented, and just pure magic, I'm just so grateful for our friend and so heartbroken. All my love goes out to his amazing wife, Kimberly, and their children," she shared.

"Love you so much James and fake James," Ritter concluded, playing on Van Der Beek's obnoxious Don't Trust the B---- character.

As far as food and beverage-themed holidays go, it's hard to imagine one more perfect than National Margarita Day. Beyond being a tasty cocktail, margaritas signify a celebration and remind us to let loose and enjoy life on the wild side—responsibly, of course. That being said, you might expect the boozy festivities to fall somewhere in the summertime or at least to coincide with Cinco de Mayo, but you might be surprised to know that the tequila-soaked holiday actually falls on Sunday, Feb. 22.
Sure, it might not quite be the same as enjoying a Texas-sized marg and tacos on a sun-drenched patio by the ocean on the third day of your three-week-long vacation, but we'll take whatever we can get. Besides, is there ever a bad reason to have a margarita (or two)? We didn't think so. Of course, when it comes to actually celebrating the holiday (outside of going on a three-week vacation), there's no better place to visit than your local Chili's.

JD Vance Sends a Bold Message to Olympic Athletes After Being Booed at Opening Ceremony
JD Vancethinks Olympic athletes should stick to sports, not politics.
The vice president recently criticized athletes who use their platform at the Games to speak about politics, telling reporters on Tuesday, Feb. 11 that Olympians who do so "should expect some pushback."
"You're not there to pop off about politics," Vance said about the athletes competing in the 2026 Winter Games in Milan, as seen in interview footage obtained by USA Today. "You're there to play a sport. You're there to represent your country and hopefully win a medal."
"So when Olympic athletes enter the political arena, they should expect some pushback," Vance added.
View this post on InstagramThough he noted that it's not uncommon for Team USA athletes use the opportunity at the Olympics to speak out about politics, the vice president said he had some "advice" for those representing the country in the Winter Games.
"My advice for them would be to try to bring the country together," Vance stated. "When you're representing the country, you're representing democrats and republicans."
Vance, 41, was notably met with boos from the crowd after appearing on the jumbotron during the Olympics opening ceremony, though he still insisted on Wednesday that "most Olympic athletes, whatever their politics, are doing a great job."
"The way to bring the country together is not to show up in a foreign country and attack the president of the United States, but it's to play your sport and represent your country well," he further stated.
Vance's comments come after Team USA freestyle skier Hunter Hess spoke out against ICE at an Olympics press conference, stating, "Just because I wear the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the U.S."
Donald Trump later took aim at Hess on Truth Social, lashing out to call the athlete a "real loser," while claiming it's "very hard to root for someone like [Hess]."

What Is 'Ash Wednesday' and Why Is It Celebrated?
There's a day each year when you might see people walking around with black marks on their foreheads—it's known as Ash Wednesday. But what's the point of those marks? Why exactly is this day celebrated?
Below, we'll go over the history of Ash Wednesday in the Christian church, answer whether or not it's just a Catholic observance (and if the Bible references this type of day), and fill you in on the date of Ash Wednesday 2026.
Plus, find out more about how food plays a role in the observance of Ash Wednesday, how this date is related to Fat Tuesday, AKA Mardi Gras and its connection to the Easter holiday.

Lent, a season of penance that includes prayer, fasting and almsgiving, begins with Ash Wednesday—a holy day of prayer and fasting. Traditionally, "lent" referred to the lengthening of the days during springtime. It comes from the English noun "lenten," meaning "the season of spring."
Ash Wednesday is officially recognized as the "Day of Ashes," signifying the practice of rubbing ashes on one's forehead in the sign of a cross. This phrase is found in Roman Missals (Dies Cinerum in Latin) and appears in early copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary.
The ashes used for Ash Wednesday are the burnt remains of the palm branches used the previous year on Palm Sunday. Each year, these branches are burned down into a fine powder, often mixed with holy water or chrism oil to create a paste. This day reminds humankind of its mortality and of its need for right standing with God.

This year, Ash Wednesday falls on Feb. 18, 2026. Ash Wednesday is always 40 days before Easter. It's technically 46 days before Easter, if you include Sundays, but Sundays are traditionally considered feast days, a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ; therefore, they are not included in the penitential season. The forty days of Lent point to Jesus Christ's 40-day fast and temptation in the wilderness after being baptized.

Anyone can receive ashes. When a priest administers the ashes, he often says something similar to this: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." While this exact phrase is not used in the Bible, the idea is referenced in a number of places:
- "Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." Genesis 2:7 (NRSV)
- "By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Genesis 3:19
- "Abraham answered, 'Let me take it upon myself to speak to my lord, I who am but dust and ashes.'" Genesis 18:27
- "All go to one place, all are from the dust, and all turn to dust again." Ecclesiastes 3:20

What Is the History of Ash Wednesday? The placement of ashes on the heads of Christians observing Lent goes back to at least the 10th century. Specifically, marking the forehead with the sign of the cross is a more recent custom, in imitation of the spiritual mark or seal a Christian receives in baptism.
Scholars believe the use of ashes in public acts of penance happened well before the broader idea of Ash Wednesday. According to the St. Gregory Orthodox Church website, in the 6th century, "Those who had been excommunicated for serious sins would stand at the doors of the church dressed in sackcloth and be sprinkled with ashes as penitential psalms were sung. The doors were then shut, and the penitents were not received back into the church until Maundy Thursday." This practice of administering ashes was gradually extended to all Christians.
Orthodox churches and other Eastern Christians have never observed this rite. Their Lenten season begins with Forgiveness Sunday, which includes an evening service called "forgiveness vespers."

Since this day is considered the beginning of Lent, Catholics aged 14 and older are instructed not to eat meat on this day or the remaining Fridays during the Lenten season.
Among the various Christian traditions, all adults observing Ash Wednesday should conduct some form of fasting (defined as consuming only one full meal, plus two smaller meals that together don't add up to a full meal) on this day. The rules of fasting can vary among Christian traditions.

Fat Tuesday (also known as Pancake Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Pączki Day or Mardi Gras in French) is the traditional name for the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. This is last day that observing Christians can eat fatty foods or meat (fish excluded) until Easter Sunday. It's generally a time of merrymaking, including the consumption of sweet treats, such as beignets, pancakes or pączki (a Polish filled donut).

In addition to Catholic traditions, many Protestants observe Ash Wednesday. For Catholics, this is not actually a day of obligation, but parishioners are highly encouraged to attend. Ash Wednesday, along with the liturgical calendar seasons of Lent and Advent, continues to grow in popularity among the various church traditions.
In fact, another phrase commonly associated with Ash Wednesday, "ashes to ashes and dust to dust," comes from the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer. It's found in the order of service for graveside funeral services:
"Unto Almighty God we commend the soul of our brother departed, and we commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection unto eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose coming in glorious majesty to judge the world, the earth and the sea shall give up their dead; and the corruptible bodies of those who sleep in him shall be changed, and made like unto his own glorious body; according to the mighty working whereby he is able to subdue all things unto himself."

What Does the Bible Say About Ash Wednesday? As previously stated, although the holy day itself is not mentioned in scripture, dust and ashes symbolized humility and penance in ancient Israel. After the biblical character Job encountered many forms of suffering, we read that he "took a potsherd with which to scrape himself and sat among the ashes" (Job 2:8).
Further, covering oneself in dust and ashes was connected with fasting: "Then I turned to the Lord God to seek an answer by prayer and supplication with fasting and sackcloth and ashes" (Daniel 9:3).

Savannah Guthrie's Mom: Black Glove That Looks 'Similar' to What Subject Was Wearing in FBI Images Found
During the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie—the 84-year-old mother of Today'sSavannah Guthrie, her sisterAnnie Guthrie, and their brother, Camron Guthrie—authorities found a black glove on the side of the road near Nancy's home in the Catalina Foothills of Arizona.
According to video uploaded by the New York Post, investigators collected the glove as possible evidence in the case. The outlet also reports that the glove that was found looks like it could have been one that worn by the subject in the photos and videos shared by the FBI on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
View this post on InstagramThe glove was found about a mile-and-a-half from Nancy's home. Investigators have been canvassing the area in an "extensive search," per the FBI. The glove was located on top of some time of foliage in a rocky area.
It's unclear if this area was previously searched. Parade spoke with former NYPD Sergeant Joe Giacalone about the case. He felt that authorities should "search an entire zone—four quadrants—going out 500 yards in diameter," adding that search "should have been done initially." After the discovery of the glove, Giacalone took to X to weigh in. "I’ve been asking for a Zone search for almost 5 days now and this is exactly why," he wrote.
If the glove does turn out to belong to the subject in the FBI's photos, it could be a major break in the case as it could reveal DNA evidence and/or fingerprints.

"Looks like a New York Post camera was on scene in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood today when FBI agents conducting a roadside sweep found a black glove that may be similar to those seen in the newly released doorbell video from Nancy Guthrie’s house," Fox News' Michael Ruiz wrote on X.
A couple hours later, reports surfaced that a second black glove has been found. Fox News reported that a "set" of gloves was being processed.
Nancy has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Authorities believe that she may have been abducted from her home in the middle of the night. The FBI has confirmed they are working a number of leads and looking into persons (plural) of interest, but they have not named a suspect, nor have they made any arrests.
