As you can imagine, the comments section was quite enthusiastic about this sweet little fluffball (and yes, the majority of the comments were about his level of fluffiness).

One person wrote in all caps, “He’s so round, I can’t handle it!”

How Often Should You Feed a Golden Retriever Puppy?

So how often should you feed a Golden Retriever puppy?

According to Dogster, once the puppy has been weaned from their mother (typically around 3 months old at the latest) and is eating solid food, they should be eating around 3 cups of dog food per day.

However, puppies grow fast, and larger breeds like Golden Retrievers experience rapid growth, which means their portions should increase as they age.

According to data from Dogster, by the time the puppy reaches 50 pounds, they should be ingesting a little over 2,000 calories every day, which comes out to about 13 cups of kibble.

Hopefully this little Golden Retriever puppy will retain that same level of enthusiasm and joy for food as he gets older.

I don’t think I was prepared for how emotional one tiny Dachshund toe could make me.

Ted has been paralyzed for 120 days. In the video, he’s stretched out beside Mom while she gently works around his tight hind-leg muscles with a massage device. “Fix You” plays in the background, which already feels unfair to anyone trying not to cry.

Then the camera zooms in to his back paw.

Watch the toes.

There it is.

One tiny flex.

It lasts only a moment, but Mom sees it immediately. Her whole reaction changes. She celebrates, leans in, and wraps Ted in the kind of hug that tells you exactly how enormous that microscopic movement feels after four months of waiting.

And yes, now I’m crying, too.

The post is careful about what happened before that moment. Ted’s mom explains that his legs had been feeling especially tight and that she used the massage gun very lightly. She also makes it clear she isn’t a veterinarian and isn’t suggesting other IVDD families copy what she did.

That distinction matters. We can see Ted’s toe move, but the video can’t tell us what caused it or what it means for his recovery.

What it can show us is how much one small sign can mean to a family caring for a paralyzed dog.

IVDD recovery looks different for every dog, and severity matters. Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine explains that intervertebral disc disease can range from pain and weakness to complete paralysis, and recovery may take months. Rehabilitation can be part of treatment as a dog progresses, sometimes including carefully prescribed exercises, underwater treadmill work, and other therapies.

If you’re caring for a dog with IVDD:

• Let your veterinary team guide the plan. New exercises, massage, devices, or changes in activity should fit your dog’s specific spinal injury and stage of recovery.
• Notice tiny changes. Keep notes or videos of new movements so your veterinarian or rehabilitation professional can see exactly what you’re seeing.
• Think in small victories. Progress may be gradual, and protecting comfort, mobility, and quality of life matters throughout the process.

Nobody can promise what Ted’s little toe flex means for tomorrow.

But after 120 days, Mom got to celebrate something she had never seen before.

That tiny movement was huge.

Wow, Miso Soup is quite the loud cat! This kitty has “quite a set of lungs,” as her mom describes in the caption. The cat let out a long meow, several seconds long, and wasn’t afraid to turn up the volume, either. She certainly isn’t afraid to make herself known!

People in the comments were quite amused by Miso Soup’s loud vocalization. One person said, “I love cats, they just open their whole mouth to scream,” while another commented, “Haha, she’s going to make sure she’s heard!!”

Others shared stories of their own Orange Cats behaving similarly. One user commented, “My Orange Cat had a permanently raspy voice bc he meowed so much,” along with a picture of the kitty in question. Why Do Cats Meow at Humans in the First Place?

Adult cats meow at humans much more than they do at other felines. This is because they’ve learned that this particular vocalization is the best way to communicate and get their needs met. But where does the behavior come from?

Meowing is partly leftover from their time as kittens. Baby cats meow to communicate hunger, cold, or distress to their mothers. Domestic cats continue this behavior into adulthood because they see us as their caregivers or parental figures.

Cats have also learned that humans’ senses are not up to par with felines. Adult kitties use scent, touch, and body language to talk to other cats, but they realize humans are blind to these cues, so they use sound to communicate instead.

Our feline friends also make targeted requests. Research shows that cats modify pitch, tone, and length of their meows specifically to demand food or signal distress. Sometimes, they even mix different vocalizations to make their demands clearer.

Lastly, kitties have trained humans. These smart animals know that if they meow at their humans, their desires will be fulfilled. Sometimes this is food, other times it’s for cuddles, but either way, they know how to get what they want!

We can hardly even imagine what Miso Soup was trying to get from her mom with her meows. With the long length and high volume, it must have been important!

Paiea the Pit Bull mix is back at the Maui Humane Society after a family felt they couldn’t give him what he needs. The precious pooch tried to soothe himself by having some play time.

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, Paiea looked like a one-dog party as he joyfully played with a new plushy. It was hard to tell he just had a major disappointment.

What Is Dog Reactivity?

When cats are born, they depend entirely on their mother for security, body heat and survival. Kittens sleep piled together against their mother’s body, associating her warmth and scent with ultimate protection. As cats grow into adulthood, that core desire for safety during sleep does not disappear. So, what’s the biggest sign your cat sees you as their human mom?

According to pet behavior experts, choosing to sleep directly on or near you at night is one of the strongest indicators that your cat views you as a maternal figure. Bedtime is an inherently vulnerable period for any animal, as sleeping requires dropping all defensive guard. When your pet purposefully selects your sleeping space over every other spot in the home, it demonstrates a profound level of safety and affection rooted in early kittenhood.

“Choosing to sleep on or near you is a strong indicator of trust and safety,” Gerken says. “Studies on the cat-pet parent relationship have shown that pet parents who have stronger bonds with their cats are more likely to have cats that want access to their bedroom and bed.”

This nocturnal bonding ritual goes beyond a simple desire for a soft place to sleep. By placing themselves in close physical proximity while you rest, your cat is demonstrating that they feel completely secure letting down their natural instincts in your presence.

“Things like physical touch, sleeping and resting together, and playing are things cats will do with each other if they have a comfortable relationship,” explains LeeAnna Buis, certified feline training and behavior specialist at Feline Behavior Solutions. “As their guardians, people engage in those same  affectionate cat behaviors.”

Buis notes that these calm, shared moments reflect a deep sense of mutual trust. “All of these can be signs that your cat is comfortable and relaxed with you and feels they can let their guard down in your presence and enjoy being near you,” Buis says.

Other Key Behaviors That Prove Your Cat Views You as Family

While resting near you at bedtime is a powerful indicator of maternal attachment, cats often layer this behavior with other distinct signs of affection. If your cat accompanies their bedtime routine with any of these classic behaviors, in their eyes, they love you and think of you like a mom.

Kneading and Paw Pressing

If your cat rhythmically pushes their paws against your blanket or chest before settling down, they are stepping back into kittenhood. “Kneading or making biscuits is when a cat rhythmically presses their paws into you, and is a behavior that stems back to kittenhood,” Gerken says. “Kittens knead their mother’s belly to stimulate milk flow while nursing. When your adult cat kneads you, especially while purring or with that blissful, half-closed expression, they’re essentially reverting to kitten behavior and treating you like their mother.”

Licking and Grooming

Cats reserve grooming for members of their immediate family unit, like their human mom. “So, when your cat licks your hair or skin, they’re extending their social behaviors toward humans they’re bonded to,” Gerken says. “Your cat is treating you as family, caring for you the way a mother cat grooms her kittens or the way kittens groom their mom back.”

Purring in Your Presence

Hearing your cat purr as they settle into bed is a comforting signal of contentment. “Purring  is primarily a kitten behavior used to communicate with the mother cat,” Gerken says. “While adult cats purr in various contexts, purring when you’re near signals contentment and attachment.”

Head Rubbing and Marking

When your cat rubs their forehead or cheeks against you before falling asleep, they are leaving behind their unique scent. “Head rubbing is a way cats show love and mark you as part of their family using scent glands,” Gerken says. Overall, it’s a strong sign of a cat-human bond.

Slow Blinking or ‘Cat Kisses’

A cat resting on your bed who gives you a slow, deliberate blink is offering a high compliment. Though while it can be a way cats bond with owners, sometimes pet parents can miss it if they don’t know what it means.

“Slow blinking is cat language for ‘I trust you and feel safe with you,’” Gerken says. “That is why it is often called a cat kiss.”

Bringing You ‘Gifts’

Even unusual habits, such as bringing a toy or object to your bed, reflect parental group dynamics. “Finding a mouse on your pillow may be off-putting, but it’s actually a loving gesture from your cat’s perspective,” Buis says. Gerken adds, “It’s with good intention. While we can’t know exactly what cats are thinking, it is possible that cats may bring prey to their pet parents as part of their social group behavior. In fact, mother cats bring prey to their kittens to teach them to hunt, and your cat bringing you ‘gifts’ may reflect this same caregiving instinct.”

Why Puppies Shake or Tremble When They’re Excited 

This Bernese Mountain Dog puppy is just the cutest, and the combination of his fluffy fur and that sweet, happy smile is so easy to fall in love with. And the way he’s vibrating is so hilarious… but why his he shaking like that? Is it normal, or should we worry? 

According to Hudson Animal Hospital, there are several reasons a dog might shake or vibrate, and being really excited is one of them. The site explains that his shaking is “harmless” and happens “simply because they are excited.” You see this when you walk through the door, when a visitor comes to the house, when you’re giving them a treat, or in other moments of excitement.

“If your dog is shaking because they are excited, the behavior should stop once they have calmed down,” the hospital writes. “Many dogs grow out of this behavior, but if your pup has only recently developed it, you may want to rule out other causes first.” 

Other causes of a puppy shaking or vibrating could include being cold, experiencing anxiety, a neurological disorder, or pain. Those situations will be more noticeable because they would either come with other signs of distress or wouldn’t fade when your pup calms down. 

This happy Bernese Mountain Dog is buzzing from all the excitement of going outside and seeing new things, and that kind of happiness rubs off on everyone. 

Shelter dogs long for the day they get chosen to be part of a family. The joy they must feel when they finally get their “freedom ride” can’t be measured and is completely heartwarming to witness.

Lady the Labrador mix was the longest resident at the Citizens for Animal Protection shelter in Houston. The precious pooch got a sweet sendoff from staff members and volunteers, but there was only one person she had eyes for.

The TikTok from @cap4pets shared Lady’s long-awaited final walk out of the shelter.

“Our longest resident got adopted after 368 days!” the on-screen text raved as Lady bolted out of her kennel for the last time. “She was so excited. She was literally flying.”

Lady was greeted by a crowd of well-wishers who wanted to celebrate her milestone and give her a special farewell.

“All of our staff came out to say our goodbyes and wish her the best of luck,” the story continued as Lady was swarmed with hugs, pets, and kisses.

While Lady was obviously thrilled with the show of affection, something — or someone — immediately caught her attention from across the room and she made it clear who she wanted to see.

Lady Sprinted to Her New Dad

Even with all the excitement and celebration going on, Lady was able to sense her new dad’s presence and didn’t waste another second on getting to her person.

“She spotted her new dad and ran to him!” the on-screen text explained as Lady dodged several people and other obstacles to race to her dad’s side. She joyfully sat right next to him as if they’ve been together for a lifetime.

As @zazuthemacawandshelby explained in the caption, Zazu came into his rescue home after spending years with “very little enrichment, interaction, or opportunity to simply be a bird.” The video shows how scared Zazu is of people, reacting by biting or staying away altogether, but they’re working on helping Zazu find confidence, hoping he’ll engage without fear.

“Training, foraging, chewing, exploring, social interaction, and learning that new experiences can be safe,” are all things easier said than done. Fight-or-flight mode is a real obstacle for these intelligent birds, but thanks to his family’s patience and rewarding him for good behavior, he’s becoming more comfortable with communicating his needs.

Zazu Is Making Great Progress

Mom noted that every new thing he learns is a big deal and a reason to celebrate. Things other birds do, like trying a new toy, spinning, exploring, or even choosing to interact, are scary for a Macaw with such a heartbreaking past, but with this level of TLC, he’s well on his way.

Every day, Zazu pushes himself and opens up his heart a little more. Trust is something that has to be earned, but once it’s there, he’s ready to show off his spunky personality. Trauma can make pets do strange things, but watching this Macaw realize he’s in a safe place is everything.

My favorite task is cleaning out the lint trap. I love it. Not only do I then personally know that it’s clean and not going to catch my house on fire, but it’s so satisfying! A really good ball of lint is proof of a job well done!

There are a couple of British Shorthair kittens that captured my heart instantly, mostly because they look exactly like three different balls of dryer lint! They’re some of the cutest kittens ever, and they’re so wiggly:

Donia’s British Shorthairs don’t all look like dryer lint, but these three do, and they’re amazing. My favorite part is how the two on the outside are ganging up on the middle one! They’re all family, but sibling fights start early!

These kittens come from a cattery in Germany. They’re about a month old, and they’re super active already: they spend most of their days playing, though they also love to cuddle with each other. They’ll be ready for their forever homes soon, but until then, they have plenty of toys and love to get through the days!

These three kittens might be the cutest, but they’re not the only ones living in the cattery at this moment! There are a bunch of others, and when you put them all together, the cuteness is literally off the charts:

I have spent plenty of time throwing toys for my cats, only to be informed that retrieving them is MY job. Lieutenant Dan, a little tuxedo cat also called Dani, has a better arrangement with her foster mom. She loves chasing a foil ball, and she actually carries it back so they can play again.

Dani is paralyzed in her back legs, so she pulls herself along the floor using her front legs. When her mom tosses the ball, she takes off in the cutest little skedaddle, catches up with it, and brings it home. She’s quick, too. I was still admiring her determined little scoot when she already had the ball and was on her way back.

In the clip from @soccercatmom, Dani’s foster mom introduces the foil ball as her favorite new toy. The best part of fetch with Dani is that she seems to understand both halves of the game. Chasing it is fun, but bringing it back means Mom can throw it again. If she could explain that last part to my cats, I would appreciate it.

What Determines a Cat’s Eye Color?

So how did this beautiful cinnamon Ragdoll cat also get such a unique eye color?

With cat eyes, it all comes down to genetics and specifically melanin, which is produced by a type of cell called a melanocyte.

It’s the amount of melanin and how it is distributed in the iris that determines the color.

So for those beautiful mint green eyes in this kitty, he most likely had less melanin, which produces lighter colors.

The other factor affecting eye color appearance in cats is how light scatters through the iris.

With less pigment, more light gets through, making the eyes even lighter.

Various other genes can impact eye color, including certain patterns and albinism, but it looks like this handsome cinnamon Ragdoll cat just lucked out with those eyes.

Another interesting fact about cat eyes? All kittens are born with blue eyes because melanocytes haven’t fully developed yet.

As the kitty ages, melanocytes activate and release melanin, revealing their permanent eye color.

I’ve always thought my Pug mix looks like Simba from the 1994 Disney film, The Lion King. His honey-colored coat, little tawny ears, and round chocolatey eyes mirror the playful animated character in the classic movie. I have a soft spot for weddings where the dog isn’t treated like an extra guest, but like part of the whole story.

For Ashley and Jacob Tomberlin, that dog is Charlie, their beloved Chocolate Labrador, and as the video explains, their “first love” together.

Charlie trots down the aisle in the matching look while the humans celebrate the life they’ve built together. And really, how do you tell that story without including the Labrador who was there while so much of that life was being built?

That’s the part that got me.

The post explains that Charlie was Ashley and Jacob’s first love together. Before the wedding, before the matching gowns, before the next chapter, there was Charlie.

One comment said they love seeing people include the most important family member in a wedding, and I completely understand the feeling.

After all since Capricorn and Aquarius both make an appearance in January, people born in this month are strong and confident, making them a great fit for this warm climate. “Scottsdale is a great place to relax and unwind,” Stardust says. “The weather is anti-climactic and similar all year, which allows people born in January to be active with their pets.” 

February: Naples, Florida

Attention February-born pet parents, Naples combines warm weather, beaches, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle that can make it easy to enjoy plenty of outdoor time with a four-legged companion.

Plus, since February plays host to Aquarius and Pisces, it makes sense that these zodiac signs are both drawn to the ocean. “The warmer temperature is a nice perk,” Stardust says. “February babies have space to share their unique personalities in this town, while also staying close to the water,” according to Stardust. 

March: Palm Springs, California

If you’re looking for the best retirement destinations for pet owners who love staying active, Palm Springs offers March-born retirees plenty of ways to explore, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors.

“Both Pisces and  Aries enjoy being really active,” Stardust explains. “Palm Springs is great for them because there’s a lot to do there.” Palm Springs also has a vibrant artistic community, which taps into the sensitivities of people born in March as well. 

April: Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Retiring doesn’t have to mean staying indoors. In Lancaster, April-born retirees can enjoy four distinct seasons, a strong retirement community, and leisurely time outside with their pets.

So while it may seem like a random place to retire, Stardust says it’s a great match for people born under the signs of Aries and Taurus. “Those born in April really enjoy slowing down—or need to slow down,” Stardust says. “There’s a lot of opportunity for them to do that here with their furry companion by their side.”

May: Raleigh, North Carolina

When it comes to pet-friendly retirement destinations, consider North Carolina. With green spaces, activities, and a social atmosphere, Raleigh gives May-born pet parents plenty of opportunities to explore, stay active, and make new friends alongside their pets.

“There’s a lot of outdoor stuff to do in Raleigh for Gemini and Taurus people,” Stardust reveals. “That creates natural opportunities for those March signs to get out, explore and mingle, tapping into their natural cosmic energy.”

Together, Stardust says the combined energies of Cancer and Leo make for a month that leans into the quirky and eccentric. “Those who are born in July also like to have fun and keep the good times going,” she says. The weather tends to be comfortable year-round for walks, too, she points out.

August: Augusta, Georgia

Clever, peppy and even fiery, Leo and Virgo will find a happy home in Augusta alongside their dogs or cats, according to Stardust. “It’s warm there, but not too hot, and there’s lots of golf, appealing to the intellectual side of August babies,” per Stardust. She adds that there’s also a little of everything in this city, giving people born in August plenty to do when they retire that their pets will love too.

September: Denver, Colorado

Were you born in September? If so, you know that Virgo and Libra make an appearance in this month, creating a group of older adults who have pets that love to explore and play. Hawaii is a dream place to retire for many reasons. November is the month of Scorpio and Sagittarius, and a solid pairing for Kailua-Kona, which has lots of golf, snorkeling and a warm, dry climate. “November-born people like to explore with their pets, and there are plenty of chances in Hawaii,” Stardust explains. So, adventure-seeking November babies have plenty of reasons to pack their bags for Kailua-Kona. 

December: Vancouver, Canada

Sagittarius and Capricorn are both born in December. People born in this month tend to be optimistic, so the rainier seasons won’t bother them that comes with this retirement location. “The good news is, the temperature tends to be moderate year-round, too, giving people plenty of opportunities to engage with others and unwind with their pets,” Stardust says.

Many dogs are happy to be in the presence of people. They get excited when a human enters the room, and even more jazzed up when they get an affectionate pat or kind word in return. But with all of that enthusiasm for people, it can be hard to know if your dog sees you as someone special in their life.

After all, you’re the one who is their provider. You feed them, take them on walks, comfort them when they’re scared or anxious and love on them as much as you can. But sometimes it can feel like you’re just another person in their life, especially when you see your pup get overly excited to see a member of your extended family that they’ve never even met before. In moments like that you may think to youself, “Does my dog even love me?“

Before you get deep into your feelings, know this: Your dog knows what you do for them. They’re aware that you’re the one who is making sure they’re well cared for. Odds are also high that your pooch is throwing out signals that they love you, adore you and care for you—you just may not know what to look for. Because of that miscommunication, it can be helpful to understand how dogs communicate through different behaviors and their body language so you can pick on on ways they are letting you know how much you mean to them.

“I know I feel confident that my dog loves me, but as a medical professional with a scientific background, I also know that ‘love’ is a difficult thing to define and prove scientifically,” says Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster. “While science can’t tell you exactly what your dog is feeling when they look at you, there’s good evidence that the relationship itself is real and meaningful.”

They Want to Share Their Stuff

That chewed-up squeaky toy or Lamb Chop plush is a prized possession for your dog. So, when they drop it at your feet, it really means something, Myers says. Although, this dog affection sign is usually overlooked by pet parents because they aren’t aware it’s how dogs show love.

To say “I love you” back to your furry companion, show your pooch you get how meaningful that generous gesture is by rewarding them with a gentle pat or some play time. When you do that, it’ll make your bond even tighter.

They Seek You Out

“Dogs are social animals, and many form strong social bonds with the people they live with,” Myers says. That’s why she lists a dog who “seeks interaction” as one who adores their pet parents the most. That’s especially true if it happens outside at mealtimes or when you bring them outside as your pooch loves being in your orbit and simply wants to share space with you. 

They Wait for You to Get Home

Your dog doesn’t need to be like Max from The Secret Life of Pets, moping by the door from the second you leave until you get home. But a furbaby who makes it clear they’d rather have you home than not is definitely bonded to you, per Myers.

She points out that not all dogs will throw a massive welcoming party when you come home. Instead, it may simply be that they voluntarily approach you when you get home. “They’re showing that your return is a positive event for them,” Myers says. In their mind, that’s an act of love.

They Respond to Your Social Cues

How to tell if your dog loves you can be tricky. After all, some dogs are more emotionally intelligent than others, but a dog who reacts appropriately when you’re happy or upset is one who is dialed into you, Warner points out.

So, don’t view your pup’s nudge when you’re feeling sad as being a total coincidence. They could simply be showing they care.

They Have Chill Body Language with You

You can truly be yourself with the people you love, and the same is true for dogs. That’s why if your dog is able to relax when they are hanging out with you, it’s actually a good thing.

“A dog that approaches with a loose body, soft eyes and a relaxed wag is likely to feel comfortable around you,” says Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel. This easygoing body language is a sign they care and know that the feeling is mutual.

They Flop at Your Feet

Myers calls this body language a “meaningful clue” that your pet is fond of you. Being able to rest in your presence signals that your dog is happy to be around you, and knows they can trust you, Myers says.

“Dogs don’t necessarily have to be touching you to demonstrate that comfort,” she says. So, if your pup prefers to hang out across the room on their comfy bed while you read on the couch, that’s worth noting, too. 

They Check in Throughout the Day

Your dog has its own schedule to follow, but it’s a good sign when they check in with you while navigating it all.

“A dog who can comfortably eat and rest, engage in normal play and exploration, seek out social interaction when they want it, disengage when they want some space, and generally move through their daily routine without persistent signs of fear or distress is giving you a meaningful picture of good well-being,” Myers says.

So why do Golden Retrievers, as well as other dog breeds, sometimes curl up in the shape of various pastries?
