Golden Retrievers famously have one of the prettiest coats of all time. They're just so soft, silky, and smooth. If I could bring a tuft of Golden Retriever fur to the hairdresser and say, "Give me this," I absolutely would!

One Golden Retriever's coat has everybody totally in love. His perfect beach waves are giving everyone '80s heartthrob vibes! He totally could have been the frontman of a boy band, breaking hearts all over the world:

Zebby the Golden Retriever is everything. His fur looks so perfectly crimped that I genuinely thought they did it with a crimper at first, but they didn't! They just took him to the beach! When I go to the beach, my hair turns evil.

Zebby lives in Hermosa Beach, California, according to his bio; he's no stranger to the salty air. His fur has always been like this, though it definitely becomes even more pronounced after a swim. As a natural swimmer, he loves it!

Every time he goes to the beach, the trip happens in exactly 4 parts:

1. Get excited to be at the beach.
2. Zoomies and swimming.
3. Beach snack.
4. Absolutely zonk in the car on the way home.

The extra fur on a dog's ears, legs, paws, and tail is known as "fur feathering." It's most common in breeds that were created for field work, like Golden or Tolling Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, and English Setters. This fur helps:

• Protect them from injury.
• Catch debris, like twigs or thorns, so it doesn't get into their coats.
• Keep these sensitive areas warmer.

Since this fur can be longer and finer than other fur on your dog, it's very important to keep it free of mats and debris: brush daily, and when you bathe them, always use conditioner!

As Dr. Jones explains, bobcat fever, also known as cytauxzoonosis, or C. felis, is caused by a parasite called Cytauxzoon felis. The disease spreads through tick bites, primarily from ticks that first feed on infected bobcats before attaching to domestic cats. The good news is that Cytauxzoon felis does not affect humans or dogs, but it can be extremely dangerous for domestic cats.

According to Dr. Jones, both Lone Star ticks and American dog ticks can spread the parasite. The tricky part is that many bobcats carrying Cytauxzoon felis don’t show obvious symptoms, making it difficult to know when the disease is present in an area.

So if you live somewhere bobcats are common, and your cat spends time outdoors, there is unfortunately a real risk of exposure. Dr. Jones notes that while treatment options do exist, the disease can become severe very quickly. Cats who survive may remain carriers afterward, potentially spreading the parasite to other cats through ticks.

Symptoms of Bobcat Fever in Domestic Cats Can Become Severe Quickly

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, symptoms of cytauxzoonosis in cats can include: 

• Lethargy 
• Loss of appetite 
• Fever 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Jaundice 
• Dehydration

The illness often progresses rapidly, which is why veterinarians stress the importance of early treatment.

When it comes to prevention, Dr. Jones says indoor cats are generally not at significant risk because exposure typically happens outdoors through infected ticks. He also discusses several tick prevention options in the video, including cedar oil-based products formulated specifically for cats, which have been shown to help prevent tick attachment.

Dr. Jones also highlights devices like the Tickless Mini, which attaches to a collar and emits ultrasonic waves to repel ticks. “It may be beneficial, and some pet parents find it effective, but in general, it seems to be a 50/50 hit or miss,” Dr. Jones says of the device. “But it’s definitely better than doing nothing at all.”

For cat parents living in areas where bobcats and ticks are common, this is definitely one of those reminders that outdoor access comes with risks many of us don’t realize until it’s too late. The TikTok from @franflight told Falcon's story as the NAWS staff member gently played with the pretty kitty on the floor.

"Falcon came to us 7 months ago, and nobody has ever wanted to meet him," the onscreen text explained, sharing that many potential pet parents aren't interested in adopting a black cat.

The 8-year-old cat is positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which compromises his immune system and makes him susceptible to infections and diseases.

"These traits make him invisible," the story continued, referring to Falcon's illness and the color of his fur. "Falcon deserves to be seen. He deserves to be loved again."

Why Don't Black Cats Get Adopted?

Black cats tend to wait for adoption in shelters longer than cats of brighter, more vibrant colors. There are some stereotypes attached to black cats, where they are often viewed as aloof or standoffish.

Light-colored and patterned cats are more eye-catching for potential adopters, so black cats are often passed by. Some people view black fur as unphotogenic and opt for a more colorful pet.

There's also the "bad luck" stigma that began in the Middle Ages, where people thought black cats were tied to witches. The myth still lingers in people's minds today.

Black cats like Falcon are extremely loving, gentle, and make wonderful family pets. NAWS shared that Falcon would adapt easily to most families and is happiest when around people.

"Cats are subtle when communicating, but once you know what to look for, fear is pretty easy to spot," says Dr. Nita Vasudevan, DVM, an Embrace Pet Insurance veterinarian. "Common signs your cat is scared include different body language signs, like when their ears are pinned back or turned sideways, when they have dilated pupils, freeze in place or when they hide. Scared cats might also puff up their fur, especially their tails. In more severe cases, a cat may hiss, growl, swat or suddenly bolt to escape if they are nervous about something as well. Some cats also show quieter fear, by doing things like refusing to come out, skipping meals or avoiding certain areas of a house."

According to vets and cat behavior experts, everyday sights, sounds and changes in routine can quietly make your feline feel unsafe. However, recognizing these hidden fears cats have can help you better understand your pet and create a calmer, happier environment for them.

1. Garbage bags

Trash day is not your cat's favorite day, and not just because the sanitation workers' truck is loud. Cats have much more advanced hearing than humans. They can hear sounds about 10 decibels quieter than we do, and five times farther. Because of this, the sound of you shaking out a garbage bag to open it affects your cat's ears differently. So, if you've ever seen your cat run off when you're doing that chore and wondered “Why does my cat hide?” it's common.

"The crinkly noise hits a frequency range that’s very stimulating and maybe even unpredictable for cats," Dr. Vasudevan explains. "Pair that with sudden movement, and it mimics the sound of something unfamiliar or threatening."

2. Their own tails

What scares cats? Surprisingly, some cats can become startled by their own tails. While it may seem funny, this unusual cat behavior is actually common in young cats that are still learning about their bodies and surroundings.

“Kittens, especially, can get startled by their own tail if they don’t yet fully recognize it as part of their body,” Dr. Vasudevan says.

A fast-moving tail can trigger a kitten’s natural hunting instincts, causing them to chase, pounce, or suddenly jump back in fear. Some fearful cats may react even more strongly when they feel overstimulated or anxious. Most kittens grow out of this behavior over time, but ongoing signs of cat anxiety or aggression should be discussed with your veterinarian.

One of the more unexpected things cats are afraid of can be human babies, especially once they start crawling and exploring. What looks adorable to us can feel unpredictable and overwhelming to a cat, turning a peaceful home into a shifting source of stimulation and stress.

“Sudden movements, high-pitched noises, staring and grabbing can be very jarring,” Dr. Vasudevan points out. “Cats thrive on predictability, so this combination can feel overwhelming or unsafe.” From a cat anxiety standpoint, it’s not the baby itself but the lack of consistent behavior patterns that can trigger stressed cat behavior or avoidance.

For cats, routines and calm environments create a sense of security, so the unpredictable nature of infants can naturally contribute to fearful cat behavior until they gradually adjust and learn the new household rhythm. Once they do, your cat will start to feel happy and safe.

4. Citrus scents

Strong smells are one of the more surprising common cat fears, and citrus is a well-known cat anxiety trigger that many owners overlook. While scents like orange or lemon may feel fresh and pleasant to people, they can be overwhelming or irritating to a cat’s highly sensitive nose, leading to stressed cat behavior or avoidance. “Cats and dogs have a very strong sense of smell, and citrus is actually irritating to them as many of the compounds are naturally aversive,” Dr. Vasudevan explains. When it comes to common household items that scare cats, beauty products rank up there. In fact, while you may use a hair dryer every morning, your kitty may wish you wouldn't as hair dryers are one of the surprising things cats are afraid of. "The combination of a loud noise and strong air movement, to a cat, can feel like a roaring predator," Dr. Vasudevan says. "The dryer's airflow can also hit the cat's highly sensitive whiskers."

That’s why many cats will bolt, hide, or avoid bathrooms entirely after a single experience. From a cat behavior standpoint, it’s not just noise—it’s unpredictability, pressure, and sensation all at once, which is exactly what can trigger cat stress symptoms in an otherwise calm environment and turn your furry family member into a scaredy cat sudddenly.

6. Belly rubs

Dogs may love belly rubs, but many cats are secretly afraid of them. If your cat rolls over and shows their stomach, it doesn’t always mean they want to be touched. According to Dr. Vasudevan, this common cat behavior is usually a sign of trust, not an invitation to pet one of the most vulnerable parts of their body.

“When a cat shows you their belly, it’s usually a sign of trust, not an invitation,” Dr. Vasudevan says. “The abdomen is a vulnerable area with vital organs, so touching it can trigger a defensive reflex.”

Because the stomach is such a sensitive area, unexpected contact can make a fearful cat feel unsafe or anxious. Instead of going in for belly rubs, speak softly, offer a favorite toy, or simply let your cat relax nearby. Understanding what cats are afraid of and respecting their boundaries can help reduce cat anxiety and build trust over time.

7. Moving furniture

Sudden changes in the home environment are a common cat anxiety trigger and one of the everyday things cats fear most. Therefore, furniture being moved or a room being rearranged can leave cats feeling unsettled or stressed. Because cats depend so much on familiarity for security, even small layout changes can contribute to fearful cat behavior until they adjust to the new setup.

“Cats rely heavily on environmental memory and scent mapping,” Dr. Vasudevan points out. “When you rearrange furniture, you’ve essentially changed their territory overnight, which can feel disorienting.”

Believe it or not, ceiling fans are one of the surprising things cats are afraid of. For some cats, a spinning object moving overhead can feel unpredictable, intimidating, or even threatening — especially in an otherwise quiet room.

“A spinning object overhead can register as a potential threat, especially since it’s moving in a way that doesn’t match anything natural in a cat’s environment,” Dr. Vasudevan says.

Because cats are highly alert to movement, the constant motion of ceiling fans can trigger stress or anxious cat behavior in some pets. Fearful cats may stare at the fan, avoid the room entirely, or become jumpy when it’s turned on. Creating a calm environment with safe hiding spots can help reduce cat anxiety and make nervous cats feel more secure.

What to Do If Your Cat Is Scared or Anxious

Can cats overcome fears? Some can. Once you understand what cats are afraid of and recognize the signs of fear, the next step is responding in a way that helps them feel safe again. “The biggest thing is don’t force interaction,” Dr. Vasudevan explains. “Let your cat control the situation. Give them space, speak softly, and move slowly.”

Dr. Vasudevan also advises against picking up your cat unless it's necessary, even if they're light enough to tote. Instead, provide safe hiding spots, such as a tall cat tree.

"Once they start to relax, use treats and calm praise as positive reinforcement to comfort them," Dr. Vasudevan recommends. "If it’s an ongoing fear—like a baby or a loud appliance—gradual desensitization with very slow exposure paired with something positive works much better than overexposure."

Yes—there are some early pregnancy signs dog senses, but not in a magical or guaranteed way. Dogs have an extremely powerful sense of smell and are highly sensitive to changes in routine, behavior, hormones and even mood. During pregnancy, a person’s body goes through hormonal shifts and subtle physiological changes that a dog can potentially notice.

That said, there’s no definitive scientific proof that dogs can “know” someone is pregnant in a clear, conscious way. However, what researchers and vets generally agree on is that dogs are very good at detecting changes in their environment and their humans, and pregnancy can create several of those changes at once.

How Dogs May Detect Pregnancy Changes

"Many people hypothesize that dogs can also smell a pregnancy before a woman knows she’s pregnant," reports Dr. Hilary Humm-Beatty, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance.

Dr. Humm-Beatty says what we do know about a canine's sense of smell supports the idea that you might notice signs your dog senses you're pregnant before you do. "A dog’s sense of smell can be up to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours," Dr. Humm-Beatty says.

Because of this, there are early pregnancy signs dog senses that people can't. "A huge part of dogs’ brains are devoted to the sense of smell," Dr. Humm-Beatty explains. "Scientists suspect that dogs can smell changes in a woman’s levels of estrogen and progesterone and other pheromone changes in early pregnancy. They likely also pick up on changes in a woman’s body temperature or movement and gait."

How Early Can a Dog Sense Pregnancy?

A dog may know you're pregnant before you do because of their sense of smell and intuition. However, how early they can tell is up in the air.

"How early a dog can detect a pregnancy is unknown and highly variable, likely dependent on the dog and its personality and nature," Dr. Humm-Beatty says.

Because every dog is different, some may start showing changes in behavior very early on, while others may not react noticeably at all.

7 Signs Your Dog May Know You’re Pregnant

Dr. Humm-Beatty points to a 2025 study in Anthrozoös that found that more than 25% of people reported that their dog's behavior changed before they knew they were pregnant. Scroll on for Dr. Humm-Beatty's insights on the signs your dog senses you're pregnancy before you do.

1. Your Dog May Start Sniffing You More During Pregnancy

You may be feeling too exhausted or queasy to keep up with your usual walks and just think you are coming down with a cold, but your pup might know the real reason you're feeling that way. Because of this, they may respond by getting extra curious during cuddle time or staying unusually close.

“This is likely due to the huge shifts in hormones and body chemistry that a dog’s keen sense of smell easily picks up on,” Dr. Humm-Beatty notes. “Later in the pregnancy, the dog might sense the baby’s movement and sniff the belly in response or curiosity.”

As pregnancy progresses, this increased interest in scent and physical closeness can become more noticeable, especially in dogs that are already highly affectionate or observant.

2. Your Dog May Follow You More During Pregnancy

Dog behavior during pregnancy can vary. That means some dogs have velcro tendencies, whether you're pregnant or not, but Dr. Humm-Beatty shares that some dogs may get "clingier" and start following you to the bathroom for the first time during a pregnancy. These changes are also normal. In the Anthrozoös study, more than 64% of dog parents believed their pets shifted during their pregnancy.

"These dogs may be smelling changes in hormones or noticing an owner’s own behavioral changes, such as acting more tired, going on fewer walks or possibly more irritability," Dr. Humm-Beatty says.

3. Increased Affection in Dogs During Pregnancy

Your dog may start offering you more cuddles, kisse, and close contact out of what seems like extra love and attention. But according to Dr. Humm-Beatty, this increase in affection can also be one of the subtle signs your dog senses your pregnancy before you do.

"Some dogs are more affectionate and cuddly," she says. "Dogs are also our close companions and highly sensitive, intuitive and observant of our behaviors and may sense early pregnancy [using] these traits as well."

4. Your Dog May Become More Protective During Pregnancy

It turns out, snuggles aren't the only way your pet may let you know, "I think you've got a bun in the oven." In some cases, dogs may shift into a more reactive mode as your pregnancy progresses, so if you notice your pup being more vocal around you than normal, this could be why.

"One way a dog may react if you're pregnant is by becoming more protective and reactive around you than they used to," Dr. Humm-Beatty reports.

For example, some dogs may bark at strangers or become more alert when someone approaches their pregnant owner, even if that’s not typical behavior for them. However, this doesn’t happen in every case, and it’s difficult to predict which direction a dog’s behavior will take.

"Whether the dog is more cuddly or protective during your pregnancy depends on the dog," Dr. Humm-Beatty notes.

5. Your Dog May Block Doorways During Pregnancy

One sign you may miss that your dog realizes you're pregnant is that they start being territorial over you. For instance, if someone is at your front door, your dog might not be a fan. In some cases, dogs may even physically block doorways or position themselves between their owner and visitors if they know their owner is pregnant.

Like increased barking, Dr. Humm-Beatty explains that this can be a “reactive” response, where the dog shifts into a more alert, protective state. In these moments, your pup may go into what many owners describe as “guard dog mode,” showing heightened awareness of people approaching the home or their pregnant owner.

6. Your Dog May Become More Distant During Pregnancy

What's another sign your dog may sense your pregnant? Not all dogs respond to pregnancy by becoming clingy—some may actually seem a bit more distant than usual. While certain pups seek extra closeness, others may do the opposite and create more space between themselves and their owner.

"Dogs can smell big body chemistry shifts," Dr. Humm-Beatty says. "A dog may also be picking up on the woman’s intolerance for closeness or discomfort, all of which can change the dog’s behavior."

In some cases, small changes in routine, energy levels, or physical comfort can also influence how your dog interacts with you during this time. Ensuring your dog still gets attention in ways they’re comfortable with—whether that’s gentle affection, playtime, or help from a partner or walker—can help keep them feeling secure.

7. Your Dog May Steal Your Clothes During Pregnancy

Some dogs may start stealing clothes or socks from the hamper when you’re not home if they sense you're pregant. While it may seem like odd behavior, it’s often linked to scent-driven curiosity and changes happening in the body.

"Dogs might steal your clothes out of the hamper when you're pregnant because they are curious about the clothes that are heavily scented with pregnancy hormones/pheromones," Dr. Humm-Beatty reveals. "Stealing these intriguingly scented items might also be a way for the dog to be close to you, or 'cuddle you,' which is a behavior change that some dogs show when their owner is pregnant."

Dr. Humm-Beatty reports dogs may also steal socks and clothes when they need more attention, such as if they feel left out.

Side by side. Through the grass. Like two kids who just met at a playground and decided they're best friends now.

Why Do Dogs and Deer Get Along?

So here's the thing: this isn't just lucky. There's actual science behind why moments like this happen.

Dr. Vijal Parikh, a neurobiologist who talked to Medium about animal friendships, explained that young animals are way better at bonding across species than older ones. Their brains are still flexible. Still learning. They haven't figured out yet who they're "supposed" to avoid so they love everyone.

"Relationships that are similar to mother and child, father and child, sibling and sibling—those are core to early development," he said. When young animals meet each other, those same bonding instincts kick in even if they're different species.

That Cockapoo and that fawn? Both babies. Both curious. Both just figuring out how the world works. Neither one knew they should be scared of each other, so they weren't.Dogs are especially good at this kind of thing.

Dr. Parikh pointed out that dogs show up in cross-species friendships constantly. We've spent thousands of years breeding them to be friendly and social. "Animals that we've domesticated are more open to relationships because we've conditioned them to be in relationship with us," he explained.

Dogs are hardwired to connect. With humans. With other dogs. And apparently with baby deer who wander into their yards on Tuesday mornings.

When that fawn showed up, the Cockapoo's first instinct wasn't to chase or bark. It was to investigate. To see if maybe this could be a friend.

And it was.

Why we love this so much: Dr. Parikh says humans are drawn to these stories because we care deeply about connection. It's how we're built. "Seeing it in animals gives us hope that we can learn more about how to deepen those relationships and make them—and each other—better."

Watching a dog and a deer walk peacefully together reminds us that connection is possible even when it seems unlikely. That choosing friendship over fear is always an option. That sometimes the world really is as gentle and magical as we want it to be.

That baby deer and that Cockapoo had no idea they were breaking any rules. They just knew they liked each other. So they hung out.

The sweet girl really does have some pipes on her—her rebel yell, if you will—but it's Scramby's fighting spirit that has everyone rooting for her. As Mom explained in previous videos, her injuries came from a dog attack when she was a kitten. It's tragic and heartbreaking, but the little lovebug and cuddle monster Scramby refuses to let it define her.

Described as "scraggly" and "skrunkly," Scamby lives up to the hype. The 4-year-old rescue cat landed with @companionanimalcoalition at the end of April. Since then, she's gotten the medical care she needs to heal and has been the star of the house while learning what real love feels like.

I'm not the only one fully, absurdly, ridiculously obsessed with Scramby's unique look.

Scramby's Health Update Has Everyone in Tears

As great as it is that Scramby was rescued, Mom shared an update about the good girl, explaining that a vet visit revealed she's in renal and kidney failure, transitioning to a different diet with new medications and specialty care.

Orphan Angels Cat Clinic in Erie, Pennsylvania, is giving Scramby top-notch care so she can enjoy this second chance with minimal side effects.

You wouldn't know by looking at Scramby how much pain she must be in, because all she wants to do is snuggle with her new favorite human, and we can't stop watching.

In the video, he's sitting on his parents’ lap on the couch, which already tells you he has a very specific understanding of where he belongs in the family hierarchy. Then Dad kisses Mom, and suddenly Beans looks like he has just discovered betrayal as a concept. The caption frames it like the entire evening is instantly ruined, and honestly, that's exactly the read. One ounce of affection gets exchanged between the humans, and Beans enters a full emotional recession.

What makes the clip so funny is how little actually happens and how massive his reaction still feels. Nobody's fighting. Nobody's leaving. There's no real problem in the room except the one Beans has created in his mind, which is that his mother has somehow redirected valuable romantic energy away from its rightful destination. His face has that perfect Dachshund look, too: stiff, awkward, deeply offended, and somehow still trying to maintain the moral high ground.

The post basically points out that the attitude after witnessing even the smallest bit of love is insane, and yes, that's the whole event. Beans isn't just bothered. He's processing. Reviewing. A young boy is going viral after being completely overcome with emotion when his mother surprises him with his beloved cat—missing since October—safely home once again. The sensory overload of a minor league stadium is intense, featuring the smell of hot dogs, loud music, and thousands of cheering fans.

Yet, for one black Labrador retriever named Champ, it is simply his office. He serves as the official bat dog for the Durham Bulls, a professional Minor League Baseball team in Durham, N.C., retrieving equipment right from the dirt.

What started as a marketing idea for AllStar Dog training became a fan-favorite obsession. By the fourth inning, the crowd already knows what is coming, and kids start leaning forward in their seats. Phones come out, and somewhere in the stadium, people start yelling "Champ."

His parents, Michael and Melissa O'Donnell, recently shared Champ's story. Michael, a former Division I college baseball player, wanted to combine his athletic background with his 15-year career in dog training.

Champ Was Not the First Bat Dog

Michael and Melissa began the project with their previous dog, Ripken. He debuted with the Bulls in 2021 before passing away last year.

The idea was to promote their dog training business. As Melissa explained, "We thought it was going to be a fun thing, maybe with a local high school team."

Ripken was called up to the Durham Bulls in 2021, and what started as a fun local stint became something bigger. Fans loved it, and Champ is now continuing that legacy.

 Champ Inherited More Than a Job

After Ripken passed away last year, Champ stepped into the role. According to his parents, he didn't just inherit the position. He inherited the emotional connection fans already had with the tradition itself.

And yes, people got emotional about it.

"We knew he was loved," Melissa said about Ripken. "But after he passed, we saw it. We felt it."

Now, a lot of kids probably remember the bat dog just as vividly as the final score.

Champ Understands the Game

What makes Champ especially impressive is that this isn't random chaos dressed up as entertainment. The dog is genuinely trained to understand timing and field cues.

Michael explained that Champ watches the pitcher, tracks the ball all the way to home plate, then waits for specific sounds before moving.

"When he hears the crack of the bat, his ears perk," he said. "Then when he hears 'bat,' that's when he heads out."

But achieving that level of focus is not easy. He practices hundreds of reps every single day to remain sharp for game nights.

For Champ, Game Day Starts Before the Crowd Arrives

Champ has a special routine that is based on structure. On game days, he gets a mix of kibble and wet food to keep his energy up. The family tries to keep him calm and rested for most of the day because once he realizes he's heading to the stadium, everything changes.

As Michael explains, "He gets all amped up and starts whining."

That is something most pet parents can relate to. The moment you pick up the leash, your dog starts acting like you announced a trip to his favorite place. For Champ, that place is Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

He finishes his official duties by the fourth inning. Then, he moves into the grandstands to interact with young fans. The team even prints custom autograph baseball cards for Champ to distribute. You can see he is a legend in the local sports community.

Signs Your Cat Needs to Exercise

Dr. Zoul says these are the two signs your cat may need more exercise in their life.

1. They're Overweight

One of the biggest indicators that your cat needs more movement in their day is that they are overweight.

"House cats are commonly overweight. When you sleep more than half your day away and don't have to hunt for food, it's easy to add on the pounds," Dr. Zoul says. "The most obvious way to tell your cat needs to start an exercise regimen is if they're overweight. Your vet can help you determine if this is the case. We grade cats on a body condition scale out of 9. Anything over 4 or 5 out of 9 is overweight. Getting to the goal of 5/9 is best done via diet and exercise."

2. They Engage in Destructive Behaviors

Another sign your cat needs more exercise is if they end up causing a ruckus. Think things like scratching furniture, getting into things they definitely shouldn't be and having accidents outside of the litter box.

"While weight is the most obvious indicator of needing exercise, sometimes destructive behaviors will start rearing their ugly heads too," Dr. Zoul says. "Scratching furniture, soiling the house, biting or scratching, and so could be signs your cat is bored and needs more exercise and enrichment."

Vet-Approved Strategies to Safely Increase Your Cat's Activity

You don't need to spend a ton of money to get your cat moving more. Simple cat toys are a great way to ensure your cat increases their activity level. Buying a laser pointer, a ball, a cat tunnel and other toys gives your cat options and encourages movement. If you have room, a cat tree or a cat perch is also a nice addition to their choice of toys.

"The easiest way to increase exercise in a house cat is toys," Dr. Zoul says. Laser pointers tend to be a big hit, and since they're controlled by you, can constantly change movement to keep the cat engaged. You'll be surprised how much your cat will run and jump chasing the mysterious red light."

Of course, you need to respect your cat's limitations, particularly at the beginning of starting their exercise regimen, and especially if they are overweight. It may take time for your cat to build up their strength before they're really around and playing.

"If your cat tires quickly, let them rest and be done. Sometimes, just like in people, they need to build up more stamina and conditioning, especially if they're already overweight," Dr. Zoul says. "Getting cat trees or other items with height differences can encourage exploration, movement and activity as well. Having safe toys around the house so there's always an exciting array of options is a good idea too."

Harriet, luckily, has done this before. Whenever there are orphaned babies on the farm, she jumps in to start caring for them. While she can't nurse them or anything, she can get them used to seeing other animals, and she can offer them the protection they can't survive without.

These two baby goats were orphaned, but it's unclear if they were from this farm originally or not. Not that it matters: the only thing that matters now is that Harriet adores them. They're safe with her! If that wasn't enough, though, she's also taken care of a calf:

Harriet is a huge dog: a Deerhound/Wolfhound/Greyhound cross. With being a huge dog obviously comes having a huge heart! She's got so many babies, and they're all going to love her forever!

Do Baby Goats Need Surrogate Moms?

These baby goats obviously love having Harriet around, and now that she's a part of their lives, they absolutely can't live without her.

However, when it comes to simply making sure the babies survive, baby goats don't technically need a surrogate mom in this sense. They need to be fed often and monitored closely, but anyone can do that. Having a surrogate mom around the clock can help, though, with things like:

• Socialization.
• Establishing a place in the herd.
• Building bonds.
• Alleviating some of the stress for you.

In a situation like this, where the surrogate mother is a dog, there will still need to be some human intervention: dogs can't produce milk for goats! Harriet definitely would if she could, though.

Walking a dog who cannot hear or see you requires a deep level of trust. Special-needs dogs rely on the steady vibration of your steps and the subtle tension of the leash. Country music star Dasha, known for her smash hit "Austin," recently experienced this connection firsthand during a visit to the Williamson County Animal Center in Franklin, Tenn.

The moment Thumper rolled over for belly rubs, Dasha completely melted.

"Oh, he's so happy," the country singer says while crouched beside the 11-month-old rescue dog during her visit organized by MuttNation. Within seconds, the interview shifted from a typical celebrity appearance to a young dog desperately hoping someone might finally choose him.

Honestly, it was hard not to root for this buy to find a forever home.

From a Rough Start to a Gentle Walk

Thumper has lost his sense of vision and hearing. He was rescued from a landfill and brought to the shelter, where he had already spent two months waiting for a home by the time Dasha met him.

Despite his limitations, Thumper was happy to be outside and spend time with the country music star. He immediately leaned into affection, wagging through the uncertainty.

"You're doing such a good job without being able to see or hear. You are just perfect," Dasha tells the pup.

Dasha's Love for Animals Came Through Immediately

The singer spoke openly about growing up in a mostly cat-loving household, though she did have a tiny Chihuahua-mini poodle mix named Chella, named after Coachella, the annual music festival that takes place in Indio, Calif.

"You can tell I'm from California," she jokes.

But the conversation shifted once she started talking about the future. Dasha admitted she dreams about owning land in Tennessee someday with rescue dogs, horses and barn animals roaming freely.

"I would love to adopt a couple of dogs. Honestly, it'd be so great to just adopt all the dogs," she admits.

And that is a feeling that anyone who has walked through a shelter can relate to. You go in, tell yourself you are just looking, and then one dog rests their head on your leg, and you fall in love.

Celebrity Attention Can Help Shelter Animals

Moments like this matter more than people sometimes realize. When celebrities spotlight adoptable animals, people take notice. The visibility increases, and one video can change the outcome for overlooked pets.

People who may have never considered adopting a blind or deaf dog suddenly see personality first, not a limitation. They watch a dog like Thumper wagging happily through a park and realize he isn't "broken." He's just adapting differently. Thumper shows us how resilient animals can be, even after we fail them.

He was abandoned at a landfill. Now thousands of people are seeing him receive belly rubs from a country music star while shelter staff cheer him on. That is a remarkable turnaround for a shelter dog. Hopefully, the next chapter includes a forever home.

Some dogs are just so special, and the thing about it is that it's not always the expensive ones who make you feel that way. While a designer dog is breathtaking in their own right, there's just something different about shelter dogs who have no claim to fame like that.

Shirley Delgado hit the jackpot with this boy. His name is Finney, he's 4 years old, and he was brought into the shelter as a stray. He was actually adopted twice in the 2 months he had been at the shelter, but his families both returned him. He was a little reactive and had a lot of issues on walks.

Shirley is determined to never give up on him, though, and she says they work on walks every single day to make sure that each one is better than the last. He's thriving, he's loved, and most importantly, he's insanely handsome!

In his DNA results, they found out that he's actually only 3% Golden Retriever, though it really carries a lot of his features. Namely, his coat, and his sweet piggy nose! He's also 44% Chow Chow, which is evident in his awesome blue-black tongue:

People in the comments of some of her videos have had thoughts on Finney's tongue, but they had no idea he was part (and a huge part, at that) Chow Chow at the time. He's totally fine!

Are All Rescue Dogs Reactive?

The biggest issue for Finney in his journey so far has been the fact that he has a lot of reactivity issues. His two attempts at finding a forever home unfortunately ended because of it.

Many prospective adopters are worried about the possibility of adopting a dog with reactivity issues. A lot of rescue dogs have had rough starts in life, and that can sometimes make them a little quick to judge. However, not all rescue dogs are reactive, and not all reactive dogs are the same.

There are different types of reactivity, like:

• Fear-based: "Something new or weird is going on, I don't like it!"
• Territorial: "This is mine, and I do NOT want you to take it."
• Frustration: I want something, and you're not giving it to me."

There are other forms it can take, too. For Finney specifically, it was most likely a combination of all three, though fear-based reactivity probably took center stage. Being in a new home, with new dogs and people to get used to, is scary! I hope he only continues to grow in his awesome new home!

Some people are born for greatness. But, baby skunks? They're born for naps, they break for naps and they most definitely stop for naps.

A recent video posted to the Cincinnati Zoo's TikTok shows a three-week-old baby skunk experiencing his first day outside. Apparently, the fresh air, warm sun, and big new world proved to be the perfect recipe for an immediate power nap—right in his trusty keeper's hands.

The caption teases: "Sleeping on the job! 😍 The 3-week-old baby skunks went outside for the first time this week. They are being co-reared between skunk mom, Lily, and our Animal Ambassador Team. These young skunks are being raised to become future animal ambassadors for other Zoos."

The video shows the tiniest, cutest skunk you've ever seen, nestled in a keeper's palm, absolutely zonked out. He’s literally so cute—risking being sprayed seems a small price to pay. His little feet occasionally kick as he dreams. The sun is warm. The world is big. And this baby skunk has decided training can wait—nap time is now. 

"So the three-week-old baby skunks, we have five in total," the keeper explains. "Two are back with mom. They're nursing. But this is the first time they've been outside, so they were enjoying the sun. He's now passed out. He's REM sleeping. He's dreaming a little bit, so he's gonna kick his feet."

Those sweet dream kicks. Those precious tiny toe beans. The complete and total surrender to sleep while being held and talked about on camera. It’s just too stinking cute—pardon the pun.

The baby skunk captured everyone's hearts in the comments section:

"Those footsie-paws."

"He doesn't have time for training, he's napping."

"I wish that just once in my entire life I could be that relaxed."

"My life's problems would probably melt away if I had a three week old slumbering skunk to gently cradle. Probably."

That last comment? Absolutely 100% correct. Holding a peacefully sleeping baby skunk would solve at least 87% of life's problems. Science hasn't confirmed this yet, but we all know it's true. 

What It Means to Be an Animal Ambassador

Here's what makes this sleepy baby skunk's nap so vital: He's not just resting. He's training. And his job—once he's fully grown—will be helping people fall in love with wildlife. He is the cute little guy who is going to make people care about conservation. That’s a big job for such a little skunk. He needs his strength to save the world. 

At the Cincinnati Zoo, most ambassador animals are hand-raised specifically to establish trust and bonds with their keepers. They become a treasured part of the zoo family. That's why this baby skunk is being co-reared between his mom, Lily, and the Animal Ambassador Team. He gets the nurturing and natural behaviors from mom, plus the human socialization he'll need for his future role.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) explains that ambassador animals are presented by keepers and education staff to connect guests with wildlife in meaningful ways. These are typically smaller species—like birds, small mammals, and reptiles—that are easy to work with and transport.

The baby skunks at Cincinnati Zoo are being raised to go to other zoos later this year, where they'll participate in those educational programs. They'll help teach people about skunks, wildlife conservation, and why these animals matter.

That means getting them comfortable with humans: voices, hands, smells, sounds, and handling. It means exposing them to new exciting environments—like going outside for the first time. It’s giving them just enough freedom to experience the world in safe, supervised ways.

Even if that means occasionally falling asleep on the job.

"We're having them get used to us and our smells on our hands, getting used to the sounds of people and being calm during that," the keeper explains in the video.

Calm? This baby skunk is achieving levels of calm most adults can only dream about. Literally dream about, judging by those little sleepy foot kicks.

At the Cincinnati Zoo ambassador animals receive exceptional health and nutritional care, plus behavioral and social activities. These five baby skunks are getting the best possible start in life—balanced between natural mothering from Lily and intentional socialization from their caring human team.

Later this year, some of these babies will move to other zoos where they'll spend their lives helping visitors understand and appreciate wildlife. They'll be gently petted by kids who've never even seen a skunk up close. They'll help adults realize skunks aren't just cartoon villains or roadside caution signs—they're living, breathing animals worthy of our respect and protection.

Right now though, this baby is only three weeks old, experiencing sunshine for the first time, and deeply, profoundly asleep in someone's hands. Life is good.

Honestly, he's already perfected the most important skill: trusting humans enough to fall asleep while being held. Trust is the foundation of everything else. By the looks of this little guy, he’s got that in spades. The rest of the training can happen later.

After his nap.

Cockatoos are one of the most complex birds ever, especially when you're planning on keeping them as pets. They require a ton of knowledge, love, and care that not every home is equipped to give them. Even for the homes that are, though, there are going to be surprises along the way.

For example, when one bird mom was trying to give her pair of Cockatoos a shower, they were taking it in two very different ways. While one of them seemed to be having fun getting clean... There was another who had other opinions:

The House Chickens, a pair of Moluccan Cockatoos named Bear and Mona, give their mom a run for her money every single day. Having one Cockatoo would be hard enough, but having two? She probably never sleeps, and when she does, I bet she dreams in squawks!

Every so often, these two have to have a shower, and they prefer to go together. It often looks exactly like this:

• Mona, the youngest, hanging out and doing what she's supposed to be doing.
• Bear, the oldest, causing absolute chaos and trying to avoid getting wet.
• Nobody actually ends up properly showering.

That's exactly the kind of thing that 99% of people who have these birds are experiencing every single day. Maybe one day, it'll work... Not for Bear, though.

Basically, Mona is a dainty, sweet princess, while Bear goes about doing everything he can to get in trouble. He's the reason they can't have nice things:

He's lucky that his mom loves him more than anyone in the world. She loves to let him be himself, even if that means never getting anything done.

Do Cockatoos Need Showers?

Mona and Bear don't take showers every day, though they do get them relatively frequently. Mona seems to really enjoy them, but Bear... Not so much.

Cockatoos should be taking semi-regular showers, or at the very least, baths. Cockatoos produce a lot of powder down, which is a powdery substance composed of flecks from their skin and feathers. It's super dusty. Regular showers help:

• Keep powder down from drying out their skin.
• Stop dust from accumulating.
• Provide enrichment.

Showers should always be lukewarm, never hot, and using any kind of soap, conditioner, or lotion is unnecessary. Unless specifically directed by a vet, just turn on the water and let them have their fun. Or, in Bear's case, practice those bat-like reflexes!
