Foster Dad’s Sweet Moment With a Nose-Nibbling Spotted French Bulldog Puppy Is Melting Hearts
Dad's holding Dale. Dale's a merle French Bulldog puppy. For one brief moment, everything's calm and the two are just looking directly at each other. Then Dale makes his move.
The TikTok captures the whole thing with a caption that says everything about what kind of foster program this is: "Dale's foster daddy is truly the best! Our CRU dads set the bar super high for the adopters."
CRU stands for Cleft Rescue Unit. These are the people who take in puppies born with cleft palates, care for them through the most vulnerable part of their lives and love them completely while finding them their forever homes. Dale's foster dad is one of those people. He's holding Dale close, looking directly at his little merle face and everything about the moment is calm and warm and completely safe.
And then Dale jumps up and nibbles him right on the nose.
@crurescueDale’s foster daddy is truly the best! Our CRU dads set the bar super high for the adopters 🥰💗
♬ Stuck With You - Huey Lewis & The NewsNot a bite. A nibble. Gentle, deliberate and absolutely adorable. His tiny front teeth make contact with his foster dad's nose for one perfect second and the internet lost its mind about it in the best possible way.
The comments got the vibe instantly:
"Awww, looks like father and son! Too Cute ❤️🥰❤️"
That's the one. That's the whole video in seven words. They do look like father and son. They look like they've always been father and son.

"They are so cute!"
"Super cute 🥰"
And then the comment that closes the whole thing perfectly: "Nibbling is the sweetest and cutest form of affection. Just be careful if you have a nose ring — mine pulls mine out of my nose regularly. But honestly, the risk is worth the reward."
The risk is worth the reward. Noted. Agreed. No further questions.
But here's what makes this nibble mean more than just a cute moment: Dale didn't do this by accident. Puppies only nibble the people they already feel completely safe with.
Why Puppies Love to Nibble on FacesAccording to Daily Paws, nibbling is when a dog's teeth gently make contact with your skin without actually biting down. Behavior expert Sherrie Yuschak explains that unlike real biting, nibbling doesn't come with any of the warning signs like flat ears, low posture or raised hackles. It's a completely different thing and it means something completely different too.
For puppies, the chewing behavior often escalates naturally with teething. Around 4 to 6 months old, puppies start swapping those 28 baby teeth for 42 adult ones. In the process, everything gets nibbled. It's also just how puppies explore the world, in the same way a toddler touches everything within reach.
Here's the part that makes Dale's nose nibble so precious. According to Daily Paws that nibbling can also be a social grooming behavior, something dogs do as a way of bonding. Yuschak points out that this kind of grooming is basically how animals show they care about each other. When Dale chose his foster dad's nose it wasn't random biting. It was a very small dog saying a very big thing.
Puppies also nibble out of pure excitement, using their mouths to show how happy they are because that's really the only way they have to show it. And given everything about this moment, that one fits too.
If the nibbling ever gets to be a bit too much, Daily Paws says the fix is pretty simple: redirect to a toy, give them a cue and make sure they're getting enough to do each day so the energy has somewhere to go.
But for a moment like this one between a foster dad and his puppy? The risk is worth the reward.
Dale chose his person. The nose knows

How to Talk to Your Dog, According to Trainers
Most dog moms and dads focus on training commands, but what if one of the biggest factors in your dog’s behavior isn’t what you say, but how you say it? Believe it or not, your tone of voice can completely change how your dog understands you, and even how connected they feel in everyday moments. To find out how you should talk to your dog, according to trainers, keep reading. That way, you'll be able to improve your bond and connection with your furry family member.
After all, dog communicate different than people do, so you want to make sure they understand whatever you're trying to tell them. However, if you're stuggling with getting your dog to listen to you, you're not alone. Mnay pet parent need to be taught how to talk to their pets. As a trainer, Shir Limazati, CPDT-KA, of Another Chance Training, says she spends more time working with pet parents on tone of voice than on almost anything else. "It is so common for a pet parent to feel they have to be louder, firmer or 'bigger' with their voice in order for their dog to listen," Limazati reports.
Yet "bigger" is not "better" when you're talking with your pup. So, what's the best tone of voice for strengthening communication with your pet? Does your tone of voice matter when talking to a dog? In a word, yes. In fact, Limazati says your tone of voice is crucial when you want to strengthen communication and your overall bond with your dog.
Related: 7 Shocking Ways Your Dog Mirrors Your Emotions, According to a Vet
Why Does Your Tone Matter? A dog listening to its owner speak in a calm tone."Dogs understand language differently than humans do," Limazati explains. "They read your communication through an emotional channel." Because of this, Limazati explains that dogs will take note of your body language and tone to figure out if you're happy, angry or something in between. It tells them whether the current situation is safe, calm or the opposite. Then, they'll use this information to come up with a response.
"Your emotions are, in a sense, the vocabulary your dog understands best," Limazati points out. "You can say any word multiple different ways, and each tone your dog will respond to differently, even if you are using the same word."
So, what tone of voice is best for strengthening communication with your pet? Here's a clue: It's not yelling.
What Tone of Voice is Best for Strengthening Communication with Your Dog?"Calm, slow, consistent, friendly voices are much safer for your dog to trust and for them to make the choice to listen and respond the way you want them to," Limazati reveals.
A common scenario Limazati hears about in her work is when dogs are overly excited about something, whether it's you coming home, a delivery person or a leaf blowing somewhere. Because of this, they start barking loudly at the door or window, which results in you responding by yelling and making large hand gestures to get them to stop.
Real talk: "All you accomplish is adding to the chaos and perhaps overstimulating your dog even more," Limazati states.
Instead, she says pet parents should respond using a tone that matches the vibe (and volume) you want your dog to have. "Slow, calm, regulated tone with body language to match helps calm the situation, creates some contrast for your dog and develops a sense of curiosity for them to explore the contrast you create with your voice," Limazati points out. "It also ensures a safe emotion for them to be attracted to and to trust."

Tips for Using Tone of Voice to Strengthen Communication with Your PetLimazati says you'll want to keep some things in mind as you perfect your tone so you can improve communication with your pet and develop a better connection and build trust.
1. Match your tone to the outcome you wantHow can you get your dog to listen better and respect you? Keep in mind that trainers don't want you to match your tone to the behavior you are reacting to even though its tempting.
"If your dog is jumping on your guests when they walk through your front door, and you react with yelling 'no, stop, off,' you are actually adding to the overstimulation of that event," Limazati explains. "It will take longer to calm your dog than if you guide with a calm, structured, positive voice, ideally combined with a proactive approach."
By doing this, you'll start to see how your tone of voice affects your dogs behavior over time in a positive way.
2. Stay consistentLimazati often sees pet parents repeating cues or corrections. As they repeat, their tone gets firmer, sometimes louder and even frustrated. "This will only confuse your dog and create friction, which is not the outcome you are looking for," Limazati warns. "It is very important to keep your tone consistent throughout that scenario."
For this reason, Limazati discourages clients from repeating cues. "If you listen to a pet parent repeat 'stay' multiple times because they want their dog to remain in one place you will almost always notice their tone becomes firmer with each repetition," Limazati notes. "Eventually, the dog breaks that stay. This is partially because their tone was inconsistent, and the dog gets confused at best, overstimulated or anxious at worst."
3. Use warmth (without over-excitement)You can improve communication with your dog by being more warm and loving in how you sound. "Baby voices" may sound silly, but there's a reason connected dog parents and trainers use them.
"That calm, slow, cute voice entices curiosity while communicating you are safe, which encourages your dog to stay connected," Limazati says. "More importantly, it keeps them wanting to listen."

What Tones Don't Work With DogsA few tones of voice will completely turn pets off. What's the worst tone of voice for strengthening communication with a pet? Limazati says these tones will cause a dog to tune you out (and may even scare them).
1. Harsh, intimidating, aversive tonesHow to build trust with your dog means you have to avoid certain things when you're talking to them, even if you want to grab their attention.
"Your dog may slowly lose trust in you and develop fear-based associations with the event you are associating the yelling with," Limazati says. "Over time, fear-based responses can also develop into safety concerns."
2. Inconsistent tonesDogs thrive with consistency when it comes to cues, feeding times and—yes—your tone of voice.
"If you switch back and forth between two or more different tones within the same scenario, your dog loses the predictability they need to understand what you are asking for," Limazati explains. "Confusion will almost always lead to unwanted results."
In other words, say "sit" calmly, and keep that tone when you release or praise the dog.
3. Frantic, panicked, high-pitched tonesNothing shuts down playtime like loud, squeaky, overexcited-sounding tones that resemble a toy on its last legs. That's why when there's panic in your voice, your dog doesn't listen to you and take you serioulsy.
"Your dog will mirror the tone within seconds," Limazati says. "If you panic, they will panic. If you show excitement in your voice, they will match that and sometimes go higher."
Instead, stay calm, speak calmly, and watch your pup do the same.

Shoppers Can't Stop Raving About ItNaturally, fan reviews have flooded in singing praises for this lightweight and easy-to-carry cat home. One shopper called it the “cutest little cat retreat” and a “sturdy hiding spot” for their feline friends, adding that they “get so many compliments” on it.
Another fan said it’s their cat’s “favorite bed,” adding that while this is their first time owning a cat, this bed turned out to be the best one “by far” after trying a few options. “I think she likes it because it makes her feel safe and hidden,” they added.
“Excellent cat house,” a third shopper chimed in. “It’s the perfect place for two cats to hide away and get in some naps,” they wrote, commending it for being “easy to move around” and “elevated off the floor.”
Cat inside rattan cat houseSpeaking of it being easy to move around, this bed features a convenient carrying handle integrated into the roof, allowing you to hold it like a duffle bag while moving it from room to room. Standing roughly 21 inches tall, 14 inches wide and 16.5 inches deep, it’s big enough for at least two cats to sleep inside at a time, but still compact enough to tuck under a table or into tighter spaces if needed. And as far as maintenance goes, it can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner, then dried thoroughly with a clean rag.
If you’re thinking about snagging it for your furry friend, just keep in mind that rattan furniture is best stored in dry, cool environments with consistent temperatures. Additionally, you’ll want to avoid using it outdoors or placing it near a radiator or other heat source, as the material can dry out and deteriorate over time.
That said, get ready to elevate both your pet’s world and your own space with this chic home upgrade. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to check out GREJSIMOJS Cat-Shaped Storage with Lid and BEVARA 24-Count Sealing Clips for even more dual-purpose pet essentials.

German Shepherd's Mud Mishap Leaves Her Looking Chocolate-Dipped
Have you ever been rushing out the door when your dog suddenly decides it’s the perfect time for chaos? If so, you’ll probably relate to German Shepherd mom and dog trainer Taylor Anderson of Precision K9s in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Instead of taking a quick potty break before Taylor had to leave the house, her beautiful German Shepherd apparently decided it was the perfect opportunity for an impromptu muddy spa treatment. The result? A dog so thoroughly coated in mud that she looks like she’s wearing a chocolate-dipped mask.
Take a look at the hilarious and all-too-relatable moment in this June 26 Instagram shared by @precisionk9s:
View this post on Instagram German Shepherd’s Mud Bath Could Not Have Happened at a Worse TimeWhen you're facing this situation, as Taylor joked in the comments, it might be best to cancel plans altogether.
A quick dip in the pool wasn’t going to solve this problem. In fact, it would have created an entirely new one. With mud covering her face, paws, and undercoat, this was clearly headed toward full-bath territory, exactly the type of surprise no one wants when they’re already running behind schedule.

Pet parents immediately understood the struggle.
Viewer @newtronheady wrote, “Literally any time you are ‘running behind,’ it’s like they sense it and think, hey, if I ain’t going with you, how can I prolong this even more.”
Another dog mom shared an equally unfortunate experience.
“Had a flight at 2 p.m. to Germany. Walked my dogs at 10 a.m. and had to leave for the airport at 11:30… yeah, my Corgilooked exactly like this.”
Many viewers were so distracted by the mud that they barely recognized the breed.
“I couldn’t tell what breed this was at first,” admitted @logan_zun_bicolorshep.
Another commenter joked, “I was confused why you were upset, then I realized she isn’t supposed to be this color.”

As frustrating as moments like this can be, dogs have a well-known fascination with mud. Veterinarian Dr. Chris Brown writes on his pet care site, Drool, that mud offers dogs cooling relief on hot days and can also act as camouflage, masking their scent in a way that taps into deep-rooted instincts.
Unfortunately for Taylor, her Shepherd’s timing couldn’t have been worse. Fortunately for all of us watching online, it made for a very relatable laugh.
Tiny Sphynx Kitten Looks Just Like a Mini Version of E.T.
Though some people may not love hairless cats, they probably haven't seen a tiny Sphynx kitten, because these babies could not be cuter.
In a new adorable video, we meet two tiny Sphynx kittens, and viewers can't help but notice that the gray kitten reminds them of a certain beloved pop culture alien.

He's just so cute!
These tiny Spyhnx kittens may also be developing a whole new group of fans who previously didn't think too much of hairless cat breeds.
One person wrote in the comments, "I never liked cats, but something unlocked within me, and now Sphynx cats are so cute to meee."
Another viewer wrote, "I just wanna hug them."
One wrote, "It's a scrunchie, a living, breathing scrunchie, and I can't have it."
In addition to E.T. comparisons, the two little kittens were also compared to Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, Baby Yoda from Star Wars, and Dobbie the House Elf from Harry Potter.

Caring for Hairless CatsWhen it comes to caring for hairless cats and kittens like these tiny Sphynx kitties, there's a bit more to it than regular cats with fur.
Because hairless cats don't have fur, their skin is more sensitive, and frankly, more human-like.
They need frequent baths (at least every two weeks) to prevent oil buildup, according to Animalko.
They also need their ears and nails cleaned regularly, as oil and wax can build up in these areas.
Unlike their furry fellow cats, these types of felines lack a coat to protect them from the sun and cold temperatures.
Though you may think living in a warmer climate would be better for these kitties, you need to think about their exposure to the sun (but don't worry, there is pet sunscreen).
These cats can also thrive indoors with blankets and sweaters.
Many hairless cats also require a more protein-focused diet.
These little kittens are quite young, but you can tell they're already curious and sweet with those big eyes!

7 Things Your Cat Is Trying to Tell You With Their Tail, According to an Expert
Did you know that cats communicate with their tails? Well, if you didn't, you do now. As it turns out, cats use their tails to tell us—as well as other cats and animals—how they are feeling. The position and movement of a cat's tail can tell you all sorts of things about their emotional state, comfort level and more. But what types of tail positions mean what? What sorts of tail movements indicate a happy cat versus an angry one? A scared one? A relaxed one? And, are there other ways in addition to a cat's tail that will help you interpret their feelings?
To find out more about how cats use their tails to communicate, we spoke with Kristiina Wilson, a clinical feline behaviorist, to learn about the various ways cats use their tails to talk to us and other animals, as well as why it is so important to look at the whole kitty, not just their tail, to determine what a cat is trying to tell you.
With this information, you can interact with cats in a more informed, confident way. Plus, it's just fun to learn more about your cat and their behavior to help you strengthen and build a better bond with your feline friend.
Why Cats Talk With Their TailsCats talk with their tails to help them communicate. They also use their tail in combination with other body language cues to let you and other animals know what they are feeling.
"Cats use their tail position, movement and fur alignment for communication with each other and with us, in combination with their ears, eyes, whiskers and full body position," Wilson says.
What a Behaviorist Wants You to Know About Your Cat's TailWhile a cat's tail can tell you a lot about how a cat is feeling, it's still important that you observe the cat's entire body to get a real read on their feelings.
"It's important to look at the whole cat and not just the tail," Wilson says. "The tail is a huge part of what helps cats to balance as well as they do, but cats do also use it to send messages. We should remember that most cat communication is super subtle to us as humans. A simple tail flick or eye movement can mean a lot that is easily overlooked."
What Your Cat Is Telling You With Their TailAgain, because cats use their tail's positioning, movement and fur alignment to communicate with you and other kitties, it's important to pay attention to these subtle cues. But what are the different types of position, movement and alignment? Wilson explains below the seven ways cats may try and communicate using their tail:
- Upright tail with a slight bend at the very top: "A happy cat will hold their tail up (often with a little bend at the very top) as they come toward you to greet you (or another cat friend)," Wilson says.
- Fake spray motion: A happy cat will also perform a fake spray motion. "They may also shake it in a fake spray motion if they are super excited to see you (especially common in neutered males)," Wilson explains.
- Slow, fluid tail wave: "A slow wave of the tail can indicate calm and relaxed energy. Anything that looks fluid is good!" Wilson says.
- Rigidity: While fluid movement of a cat's tail is the sign of a content and comfortable cat, a rigid tail is the sign of just the opposite. This signals an upset cat, according to Wilson.
- Fast pounding on the floor: Another sign of an upset or agitated cat? A fast pounding tail on the floor.
- Puffy tail: A puffy tail, known as piloerection, is the sign a cat might feel frightened or threatened.
- Tucked tail: A tucked tail signals submission or fear.

The Difference Between a Dog's Wag and a Cat's Swish"People often think that a cat's tail movement can be interpreted similar to a dog's. Not so fast," Wilson warns. "A cat that has a swishing tail, like a dog's happy wag, is most likely agitated and on high alert. Do not pat this cat unless you know this to be a sign of happiness in this particular cat."
She adds that "fast movement in the tail in cats could indicate frustration, arousal, irritation or excitement. Also, it's important to remember that cats are all unique individuals, and we can't say that they all use their tails in the same way or that one particular tail movement means the same thing to all cats. The same tail position can mean different things depending on the cat giving the signal. The rest of the body language plays a huge role in figuring out the meaning."
When a Lack of Movement Is a Medical EmergencyImage via Unsplash/ Erik-Jan Leusink
"If you see a cat's tail that is dragging, limp or is unable to be moved, the cat needs to see a veterinarian ASAP, especially if those signs are accompanied by incontinence or dragging of the legs," Wilson says.

Different Bernedoodle Personality Traits Photo by Lesli Whitecotton on UnsplashPhoto by Lesli Whitecotton on Unsplash
Bernedoodles, also known as "Bernies," are a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. These big, bounding, bundles of love have become increasingly popular over the years due to their fun, affectionate personalities.
Bernies love to cuddle and are extremely close with their families and packs. Many people refer to them as "velcro dogs" because they never want to leave your side. They're also often class clowns and often very goofy and social. Bernies are known for tons of energy, often getting the zoomies, and being very playful long after the puppy stage is over.
One thing to note is Bernies can be very stubborn due to their intelligence, so they can be on the difficult side to train. Additionally, they're very sensitive dogs! They can be fairly independent so they require an owner who can adjust to them and their moods.
All and all, Bernies are a loyal, loving, and wonderful addition to any family. Anyone would be lucky to love a Bernedoodle!

This Chihuahua Was Raised With Cats—and Now He Loafs Like One
Dogs and cats may share a home, but they don't usually share the same habits. That's what makes this tiny Chihuahua named Chiwee so adorable. He was raised around cats, so he didn't have canine role models to teach him how to "dog." Instead, he learned from his feline family, and it shows.
Rather than sitting like a typical dog, Chiwee has perfected the classic cat loaf, tucking his paws beneath him just like the cats he grew up with. The sweet pose has viewers doing a double take, and once they realize that yep, he's loafing, they can't stop smiling.

Why Dogs Mimic Other Animals They Grow Up WithAnimal behavior experts say dogs are highly observant social learners, which means they often pick up behaviors from the animals they spend the most time around. As Holiday Barn Pet Resorts explains, "Dogs are highly adaptable and keen observers of their surroundings. If they grow up alongside cats, it's natural for them to pick up certain habits."
It's not unusual for puppies raised with cats to adopt a few feline behaviors, from grooming habits and sleeping positions to the way they interact with people and other pets.
Holiday Barn also points out that social learning isn't the only explanation. Some dog breeds naturally have cat-like qualities thanks to their independence, agility, and reserved personalities. Breeds such as Whippets and Shiba Inus, for example. And just like people, every dog has its own unique personality, so some are simply more cat-like than others.
Other feline-inspired quirks can include squeezing into tiny spaces for a nap, batting at toys with their paws, giving affectionate headbutts, enjoying alone time, and, of course, the iconic cat loaf. As Holiday Barn notes about the loaf, "As this is not a natural behavior for a pup, dogs who adopt this position are likely mirroring their feline companions."
We're not sure whether Chiwee ever had the chance to learn how to be a dog from other dogs, but it's pretty clear that his feline upbringing seems to have worked out in his favor.
Goldendoodle Can't Take His Eyes Off the TV When News Anchor Dad's Show Is On
My dogs don't really notice what's on television except if there's an animal on the screen. Once they see or hear someone they consider a furry friend, they're glued to the set. It's the only time they binge-watch anything.
Knox the Goldendoodle has his own favorite TV show and always makes a point of catching the local news for a very special reason.
@that.dood.knoxAnd then he got to visit dad at work 🥹 My husband is a TV reporter in Denver and our goldendoodle loves to watch his dog dad. #dogdad #goldendoodle #goldendoodlepuppy
♬ You've Got A Friend In Me (Cover Version) - Geek MusicIn the TikTok from @that.dood.knox, the gorgeous Goldendoodle stared at the television with his full attention on a certain news anchor.
"My husband is a TV news reporter in Denver and our dog loves watching his show every night at 6 pm," the onscreen text explained. "He loves hearing his voice."
Knox was clearly captivated by his dad and hanging on his every word. Either the devoted dog loved his father's news delivery, or he is just a dedicated fan regardless of what's being reported.
The fur baby fan even got a very special field trip in a sort of "bring your doggy to work" day.
"After years of watching dad on TV, he got to visit dad in the studio and be on TV too," the story continued, with clips of Knox fully decked out in a tie and sitting proudly in the anchor chair next to his father.
Knox received rave reviews from viewers and may have acquired his own following:
- "I would watch, just to see the dog. A positive in a sea of negative news," one posted.
- "Oh my!! Best newscast ever," another raved.
- "Well, now you've done it. He's going to take your job from you," a fan joked.
- "So professional. He should have his own show," someone suggested.
Dogs view television differently from humans. Canines have only two types of color-processing cells in their retinas, which gives them a different color perspective. They also don't realize that a TV screen is two-dimensional and have limited understanding of what they're seeing since the television doesn't give off a scent.
Related: Golden Retriever Watches National Dog Show and Falls for Female Fur Baby
Still, dogs will recognize familiar faces and stay tuned if a loved one is on a monitor. Many canines are also drawn to TV shows that involve fellow fur babies, especially if those animals on the screen make plenty of noise.
Knox obviously is a huge fan of his dad; however, with the popularity of the pooch's screen debut, they may need to add another chair to the news desk.

♬ Dem Deer - Bryan Bowers BandI counted nine, but there could be (and probably are) more around there somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a dozen deer in that yard... And yet, only one of them is snow white!
How Rare Are Albino Deer?Out of at least 9 deer, only one of them is this incredible white color. Albino deer (and animals in general) are pretty rare, so it's always such a treat to see them!
Albino deer are extremely rare, only occurring in about 1 of every 25,000 births. Albino deer are not protected by federal law, but some states have protections for them, meaning they can't be hunted. Those states are:
- Iowa
- Tennessee
- Wisconsin
- Minnesota
- Illinois
No other states offer any legal protection for albino deer, but they're also not classified as endangered in any way. They're not a different species, only a mutation! Even so, they're so cool!

Heart to Tail Sea Horse Floating Dog Toy, $4.99 at AldiAldi
Shaped like a seahorse, at $4.99, the Heart to Tail Sea Horse Floating Dog Toy is part of the German grocer's rotating Aldi Finds section. The toy floats when you put it in water. Machine washable, the toy can be tossed for a quick game of fetch, or you can always give it to them to chew on. At less than five bucks, this toy offers more versatility than the average pool toy find.
With little creativity on your side, this dog toy can become the centerpiece of summer games that help dogs stay active, mentally engaged and cool during the hot summer weather. With the temperatures rising, that is a win for both pets and their parents.
Related: Aldi Just Dropped a New Dog Toy That Could Be a Summer Game Changer
No Pool? No Problem! Not every dog has access to a pool, but that doesn't mean your dog shouldn't enjoy playing with a water-filled plush toy. All pet parents need to do is fill a large bowl or shallow basin with water and drop the seahorse in.
You can turn a shady patch of yard or the kitchen floor into a five-minute enrichment session. Expect dogs to paw at the toy, chase it as it slides across the bowl, or nose it around. All those activities burn mental energy.
When the temperatures rise, a few minutes of water play in the shade can tire your dog. Instead of your dog pacing indoors, restless and overheated, give him a way to cool himself. Just remember to provide your pup with access to fresh drinking water.
Turn Ordinary Play Into a Cooling ChallengeWith a price tag of $4.99, this toy is a great find to add to your rotation. Besides pool play, you can use it for another enrichment game.
Place the toy in a shallow container, fill with cool water, scatter a few treats or pieces of kibble, and let your dog work. Watch as your dog gently pushes the toy aside to reach each reward—a simple way to turn snack time into a fun puzzle. Just remember to supervise water games and keep the session short during peak heat times.
Water play is one of the easiest ways to beat the heat during summer. Most dogs still need regular exercise. However, long walks on hot pavement are not the best or safest idea. Water games provide a fun alternative that keeps dogs moving and playing without overheating.

The Bizarre Reason Your Dog Eats Grass, According to a Veterinarian
On your daily walks with your doggie, have you ever noticed that they sometimes stop to eat some grass? Or, maybe when you're playing out in your yard, do they decide then is now a good time to get in their greens and munch on a few blades of grass (or a whole mouthful)?
If you've noticed this behavior, you might be wondering why your dog eats grass—and if it's even good for them. While there's a widely-believed idea that it's due to an upset stomach, you might wonder if that's even true, or if it's a totally different reason altogether.
So, what's the real reason dogs eat grass—and is eating grass ever a behavior to be concerned about? To find out more, we spoke with Dr. Allison Newgent, medical director and board-certified veterinary surgeon at Greater Staten Island Veterinary Services in Staten Island, New York, and Dr. Jordyn Zoul, a Georgia-based veterinarian at Seaside Veterinary Hospital on St. Simons Island and a vet advisor to pet nutrition and wellness company Spot & Tango.
From debunking the "upset stomach" myth to getting down to the ancestral reasons a dog might graze, Dr. Newgent and Dr. Zoul share their thoughts on all things dogs eating grass. Read on to see what they have to say.
The 'Upset Stomach' Myth: What the Science Actually SaysThere is a common belief that dogs eating grass is a sign of stomach upset in doggies, but this isn't actually the case the majority of the time.
"The 'grass helps my dog feel better after he gets sick' theory is largely a myth," says Dr. Newgent. "Most dogs that eat grass aren't ill prior to eating it and don't experience vomiting afterward. While some dogs do get nauseous and/or vomit after eating grass, most dogs simply develop a behavioral habit around consuming grass."
However, there are times eating grass may actually be due to nausea.
"I most often see grass-eating in dogs associated with nausea," Dr. Zoul says. "Likely due to the texture of grass, eating it can sometimes induce vomiting, which we all know can alleviate nausea many times, especially if you've eaten something that upset your stomach. However, there are many complex reasons other than eating something they shouldn't have that may cause nausea in dogs. If this becomes an ongoing issue for your dog, it's best to take him or her into the vet to better investigate what may be causing it."
Ancestral Instincts: Why Modern Dogs Still Graze Like WolvesHonest Paws/Unsplash
As it turns out, it might actually be a dog's ancestral instincts that lead them to chew on grass.
"Wild canines ate a combination of plant materials and animal matter as part of their natural hunting practices," Dr. Newgent explains. "This instinct to graze seems to have remained intact among our domesticated canine friends, despite them being provided regular, nutritious meals."
The Pica Phenomenon: Is Your Dog Missing Nutrients?"Pica refers to the persistent consumption of non-food items by pets," Dr. Newgent says. "Pica can arise from either behavioral causes (anxiety, excessive boredom) or from nutritional deficiencies within the pet (e.g., lack of essential vitamins/minerals). An occasional bite of grass during a walk does not constitute pica. However, when a pet persistently consumes grass/dirt/rocks/fabric and cannot be redirected, then pica becomes a valid concern and warrants further investigation by a veterinarian."
Boredom, Anxiety or Just a Snack: The Behavioral Reasons for Grazing"Many dogs graze due to excessive boredom, anxiety or simple hunger between meal times," Dr. Newgent says. "Some dogs seem to enjoy the taste of various types of vegetation. Younger dogs and puppies may graze simply due to curiosity. Springtime tends to provide the most appealing grazing options (tender shoots, etc.) and some dogs seem to have a strong preference for these particular types of grass."
Why Vets Aren't Worried About Your Dog Eating GrassJay O'Hagan / Getty Images
Most vets aren't worried about your dog occasionally munching on some grass because it's a common behavior that can be attributed to a variety of innocuous reasons like their instincts or just simple boredom or hunger. So, the next time your dog eats grass, you likely don't have to worry about them.
Fiber and Digestion: The Hidden Benefits of Eating GrassRohappy / Shutterstock.com
"There are two primary ways that grazing may offer benefits to your dog," Dr. Newgent says. "First, it provides additional fiber, which may aid in bowel movements for some dogs. Second, it offers enrichment opportunities for dogs that require stimulation via chewing behaviors. If the dog eats from a lawn that has not been fertilized, treated with pesticides or treated with weed killers, there is minimal risk associated with allowing the dog to graze. There is no necessity to encourage grazing behavior, but there is similarly no reason to become overly alarmed by it."
The Difference Between Casual Grazing and Obsessive ChewingSiarhei Valchok / Unsplash
"The distinguishing characteristics between normal grazing versus obsessive chewing are the quantity consumed and ability to be distracted," says Dr. Newgent. So, if your dog is munching and is able to move on with their walk with no problem, there's likely no issue. However, if you find that your dog is eating large amounts of grass and they seem to be obsessed with it, you may want to bring them to their vet for a discussion about the underlying cause and potential treatments.
The Real Danger: Pesticides, Fertilizers and Toxic LawnsBoldizsar Bednarik / Unsplash
While grass in and of itself within reason isn't dangerous to your dog, Dr. Newgent warns that lawn treatments like pesticides and fertilizers are. There are also concerns about the ingestion of intestinal parasites from other animals' fecal material and sharp plant matter that may hurt your dog's gums, throat, paws or skin.
The quantity of grass consumed also matters.
"Most grasses on their own in moderation are not necessarily 'unsafe,' but like anything in high enough quantities, it can become concerning," Dr. Zoul says.
How to Safely Stop Your Dog From Eating Grass on Walks"Redirecting your dog away from the plants is more effective than punishing him for his behavior," Dr. Newgent says. "Teach your dog a reliable 'leave it,' bring treats with you on walks to reward your dog for looking at you instead of the plants and attempt to maintain engagement on your walks."
She adds that "providing ample physical and mental stimulation can help reduce your dog's tendency to graze out of boredom. Avoid walking your dog in areas where the lawns have recently been treated with chemicals, and utilize a basket muzzle if your dog continues to exhibit severe grazing behaviors until you have had an opportunity to train them."

They can give you their expert opinion on whether or not they think your dog's diet could benefit from a supplement and what their professional recommendations would be.

Tiny Black Lab Puppy Is Already His Mama's Fiercest Protector
Everyone always thinks of mamas protecting their babies, and for good reason. For most mammals, giving birth to their young puts their guard up big time! They will not let anything get to those babies, even if it's someone they typically trust more than anyone.
One Black Lab puppy has flipped those roles on their head, though: when their human caretaker tried to come near, he wouldn't allow it! The way he was guarding his mama has everyone's hearts melting, and for good reason. It doesn't get cuter than this:

♬ original sound - lettrevcookTikTok user @lettrevcook was definitely not expecting a guard dog this early on, but I'm glad he got one. This is so sweet! Puppies love to find their bark and then use it excessively for the rest of their lives, and this boy is in that phase.
He might have been barking at Trev, who was approaching him and his mama, but I'm sure the phone didn't help. I took an insane number of pictures of my youngest puppy when I first got her, and she hated my phone! For this puppy, though, it's probably a mix of both.

Labrador Retrievers Are Super ProtectiveThis puppy's immediate talent for protecting his mama is very cute, but it's not surprising. Labrador Retrievers are natural protectors, and they're fierce companions: if you mess with their loved ones, you're in for some trouble!
Gabriel Mello / Getty Images
Labrador Retrievers were bred to be hunting companions, and they're still very popular in that area. However, they've also become one of the most popular choices for single people, families, and anyone looking for a loving companion because:
- They're super smart.
- They're short-haired and easier to groom than Golden Retrievers.
- They're playful and suitable for several lifestyles.
- They're good with kids.
As the puppy in the first video proves, they're also big into barking. You can train that out of them, but if anything gets in their way, they won't be afraid to pull it out again!

Puppy’s First Trip to the Store Ends With Her Seeing a Zebra—and She’ll Never Get Over It
When you have a puppy, one of the most important things you can do is take them out into the world. They need to see and experience as many things as possible; when they've seen everything, they react to nothing.
Everything usually includes, like, other dogs. Maybe some cats, or even a couple of birds. However, for one puppy, that apparently means... Zebras? On her first-ever trip to the store, she either encountered a zebra foal or a very strange-looking Dalmatian:
@420_69_666Thats a weird looking Dalmatian
♬ original sound - Torrell TafaJort was definitely not expecting this, to say the least. There are chicks at Tractor Supply, so I'm pretty sure she thought maybe they'd go see them. And that's if they were feeling crazy. The zebra foal, however, did not give them much of a choice.
I'm a little upset. One, because I want to see a random zebra, but two, because the zebra is walking on that leash better than my dogs do! In the comments, the daughter of the man walking the zebra actually commented! She said they plan to raise her on their farm and keep her as a forever pet. They also have her parents!

More power to them! As for the puppy in the video, she's awesome, too. She'll be raised on a farm! She was a rescue: for $250, they got a GSD/Lab/Heeler mix with beautiful eyes and a great attitude. She's already proving to be a little bit of a handful...

♬ original sound - Flower Child DarleneShe's perfect. I don't even think I could take on a Rottweiler, so to see her actually managing to hold her own is so cool.
Can Anyone Have a Zebra?Tractor Supply is pet-friendly, so they were not breaking any rules by bringing their zebra in there! You can do the same if you ever manage to get your hands on a zebra. There's just one problem, though: that is not easy.
Mint Images / Getty Images
Though it is legal to own a zebra in some states, you may still have to deal with:
- Permit requirements.
- Licensing requirements.
- Space requirements.
- City/county restrictions, even in states where it's legal.
- Hefty fees.
- Trouble finding a vet.
Zebras aren't like horses: they're harder to handle and, in many cases, much more aggressive. If you want one, you'll have a long journey ahead of you. They definitely don't sell them at Tractor Supply, even if they let them in!

Do Dogs Like Wearing Clothes? We honestly have no real way of knowing whether not our pets "like" being dressed up and wearing clothes. It's ultimately determined by knowing your pet and observing their behaviors and reactions to decipher whether or not they like their fancy outfits.
Some signs your dog likes the outfits you've gotten them:
- They wag their tails or seem excited when you get the clothes out
- They cooperate when you're putting the various items on them
- The outfits don't appear to bother them and they're calm while dressed up
Ultimately, it's always best to pay attention to your dog and follow their lead. If they're uncomfortable or distressed while dressed up, it's probably not for them. While they may not be able to give you definitive "paws up" about their feelings, paying attention to them will be your best friend.
And if they are cool with a costume, you might just find yourself on the receiving end of some superb cuteness!

Teaching Your Dog to SwimAll joking aside, if you have access to water making sure your dog is safe around it is imperative for their safety. While not all dogs may end up loving the water, making sure they can take care of themselves and survive were they to fall in or find themselves in a body of water is a great skill to teach your beloved pet.
Teaching a dog to swim requires patience, positive reinforcement, and a few tips and tricks. Never just throw your dog into the water—that's incredibly unsafe. Instead, guiding them with treats and going slow and steady does the trick.
Some things that can help your pup learn to be confident around the water:
- Equipping them with a properly fitting life vest/jacket
- Wading in the water with them while they're still learning
- Always starting in the shallower ends where it's easy for them to get out
- Rewarding them for little actions like getting their paws wet
- Keeping your "swim lessons" on the shorter side
- Always making sure to have treats on hand for a good swim
Making sure you're teaching your dog to swim carefully and methodically sets them up for a lifetime of success as a swimmer. And who knows! Maybe you'll just have the next Canine Olympian on your hands!

Cats Finally Have Their Own Awards Show — and Every Quirk Deserves a Trophy
Every cat parent has a story to share. Maybe your cat insists on sleeping inside the bathroom sink. Or they claim the laptop a few minutes before your Zoom meeting. Or they manage to fold into a shoebox that is clearly too small.
Well, your cat's funniest habit might deserve an award. Those wonderfully odd habits are exactly what Merrick Purrfect Bistro wants to celebrate with the first-ever Purrfect Choice Awards.

The lighthearted competition honors the quirks that make cats unique, and cat parents can nominate their felines across six categories: Purrfectly Playful, Best Cat Space, Best Cat Napper, Conversation Companion, Work from Home Boss and Foodie of the Year.
Nominations close July 5 at purrfectbistro.com/awards, and one category is already pulling ahead of the pack.
Napping, It Turns Out, Is Competitive"Best Cat Napper is shaping up to be one of the most competitive categories," says Meg Turner, senior brand manager at Merrick Pet Care. According to Turner, submissions are arriving with incredibly creative napping positions, from cats caught mid-stretch to cats claiming spaces that were clearly never meant to be a bed.
Content creator Wendy Ly hosts the show. When asked which of Wendy's cats she could nominate, Turner tells Parade Pets Ly would likely put forward her cat Candi for Best Cat Napper, "since she's always making use of any space she can find." Her other cat, Howl, would go up for Foodie of the Year, because, in Turner's words, "he loves food and knows exactly what he likes."

Every Cat Has Something Worth CelebratingThere are no breed or age limitations during the nomination process. Turner said that was intentional. In her words, every cat brings something different to their category regardless of pedigree or years, which is the entire premise of the awards.
The judging panel, made up of representatives from the extended Merrick brand team, will review submissions based on category fit, creativity, originality, and personality to select finalists, who will be announced July 13.
From there, the public votes on category winners through July 31. The ceremony streams live on Wendy Ly's YouTube channel on August 8, which is International Cat Day, at 2 p.m. EDT.
What Can You Win?Here is the fun part. Every cat wins. With every nomination, cat parents receive a coupon for a free package of Merrick Purrfect Bistro wet food or treats.
Category winners take home a trophy, a month's supply of food, and a curated Bistro Box. The grand prize winner, chosen by Merrick, will get a Best in Show trophy, six months of food, and a personalized multi-story cat house.
So, if your cat has a nap spot that stops you in your tracks, July 5 is the deadline to prove it.

How To Safely Introduce a New Baby to the Family Dog According to ExpertsCosmo is such a proud big brother to his human newborn sibling, and it's clear they're going to become the best of friends. If you're having a new baby and need tips on safely introducing the infant to the family dog, the experts say there are important steps to take.
According to the Toronto Humane Society, preparing your dog to meet a newborn baby starts before the baby is born. They note that about four months before a new baby is set to arrive, that's when dog parents should begin the introduction, starting with letting the pooch investigate the baby room, smell fresh diapers, baby lotions, and watching baby crying videos on YouTube to get them used to some of the new sounds they'll be hearing.
One or two months before the baby's set to come home is the best time to make any big moves that might affect the dog's typical routine. If you need to walk your dog earlier or later, start shifting that schedule now. If you need to move the pup's bed to a new spot in the house, this is when to do that, too. That way, when the baby comes, their routine will generally be the new normal for them.
The Toronto Humane Society suggests that when your baby comes home, be prepared for your dog to greet you with enthusiasm, and anticipate how to handle that beforehand. When things have calmed, allow your pup to see and hear your baby, with someone else there to lend a hand, and watch their body language closely. Don't allow your pup unsupervised access to your baby, and be sure to provide plenty of opportunities for positive associations.
"It is important that when children grow older, they learn to recognize signs of fear, anxiety, and stress that a dog may display," the Toronto Humane Society explains.
If you run into any struggles, always err on the side of safety and don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian or a canine behavior consultant.

This year, Blue Buffalo is taking an unusual approach to helping dogs by creating a different kind of fireworks show for them to enjoy.
Instead of focusing on people watching fireworks, the company created a five-hour dog-friendly fireworks show, available exclusively on its YouTube channel.
Why Are Dogs Afraid of Fireworks?Yevhen Stienin / Unsplash
According to canine cognitive scientist Dr. Evan MacLean, who helped create the dog-friendly show, loud fireworks combine several things dogs naturally find unsettling: sudden explosive sounds, unpredictable timing, flashes of light, and vibrations they can't control.
The goal for pet parents is to prevent stress from building in the first place, not to soothe dogs after they've already been frightened. Preventing stress starts earlier than many pet parents realize.
Timing Matters More Than You ThinkDr. MacLean tells Parade Pets that the earlier you can start preparing, the better. In an ideal world, pet parents should begin the calming routine before the first firework goes off.
Start by setting up the environment an hour or two in advance, closing the windows and curtains, and turning on calming background noise. This is where Blue Buffalo's dog-friendly fireworks show can help.
About 10 minutes before the fireworks go off, it is time for special enrichment activities, such as a food puzzle or a long-lasting chew. The goal is to have your pup engaged in something enjoyable when the fireworks begin.
A good idea is to freeze treats or food to make a dog popsicle. Blue Buffalo also offers a range of fresh stews to try.

The Only Fireworks Show Your Dog Should WatchBlue Buffalo's video lasts five hours and includes everything dogs love. Featuring white-noise music in the background, the video shows treats, food, and balls moving constantly.
Dogs find moving elements soothing, and by combining the music with gentle petting, pet parents can help keep their dogs calm and relaxed.
How to Pet Your Dog for SoothingPim Chayada / Unsplash
Petting is part of the toolbox that helps pets relax during Independence Day celebrations. The technique matters, according to Dr. MacLean, who recommends slow, steady strokes along the chest, shoulders, or back rather than quick pats or an enthusiastic hug, which most dogs do not actually enjoy.
That kind of touch can trigger a release of oxytocin and lower cortisol, the stress hormone. Most importantly, allow your dog to guide you and decide how much contact they want. If they lean in, keep going. If they move away, let them.
The stress does not always end when the noise does. Some dogs stay anxious well after the last firework fades, so plan on a quiet decompression period afterward, with fresh water and a return to normal routine.

Precious Miniature Dachshund Puppy Looks Exactly Like a 'Pocket-Sized Golden Retriever'
The first thing most people notice about Miniature Dachshunds is usually their size, but their beautiful, shiny coats deserve a little applause, too. Whether they're black and red, dapple, or cream, these dogs are always having a good hair day, especially the long-haired variety of the breed.
And then, there's this puppy, Butter. Not only is this tiny dog perfectly named for her golden yellow color, but her coat also makes her look like a "pocket sized Golden Retriever," as her human pointed out on TikTok.

♬ original sound - tobicube - tobicubeLogically, I know that Miss Butter is a Dachshund, but if I didn't know any better, I'd think she was a Golden Retriever who got hit with a shrink ray. She really does look like a tiny version of the breed, down to those gloriously fluffy ears.
I can't get over the way she stares so intensely into the camera with one paw folded under the other. This lady is brand new to the world but already serving looks.
It makes sense that people in the comments are so obsessed with her, with one even calling her "a literal pocket full of sunshine." Her mom couldn't have picked a better song for this video than the Natasha Bedingfield tune!
How Big Do Miniature Dachshunds Get?Of course, Butter looks extra tiny right now since she's a puppy, but that "pocket-sized Golden Retriever" look is here to stay. Miniature Dachshunds don't get very big, even when they're fully grown.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Miniature Dachshunds weigh about 11 pounds or less — a significant difference from their standard counterparts, who weigh between 16-32 pounds as adults (and they're still considered to be pretty small dogs).
This means that they probably won't make the best guard dogs ever (since they don't exactly look intimidating), but you can trust that they will make plenty of noise when they sense an intruder is near — or when they're mildly inconvenienced. Either way, these dogs come with huge personalities.
Because of their small size, Miniature Dachshunds make great pets for those who live in apartments or small spaces. Just don't forget that they have plenty of energy and need their exercise.
