Most dogs hear one piece of kibble hit the floor and respond like they've been called into emergency service.

That's why Shayla the Golden Retriever's bowl boundaries feel suspiciously pure.

The video starts with the camera looking down at Shayla and her food bowl, where one lonely little piece of kibble is still sitting. Her human explains in the video caption that Shayla always leaves at least one piece behind for her sister to eat. Not sometimes. Not once by accident. Every meal.

I don’t know what kind of advanced Golden Retriever kindness program Shayla graduated from, but I would like Lola to audit the class. My dog is many wonderful things, but “altruistic with leftovers” is not currently one of them. Her siblings know to give her a wide berth because any unattended kibble is not a gift. It's a target.

Shayla, however, appears to be operating on a different moral plane.

The post caption makes it even sweeter because her human says Shayla does this at every single meal, with the kind of emotional disbelief only a pet parent can understand. You can tell this isn’t just cute to them. It gets them every time. And, same. Videos like this get me in a way I’m not fully prepared to defend in public.

Then her sister walks up.

That’s the moment the whole thing becomes almost too much. Shayla doesn’t guard the bowl. She doesn’t change her mind. She just lets Sissy come over and take the kibble waiting for her.

It's such a tiny gesture, but that's what makes it feel so big. One bite of food isn't a feast. It's not some grand act. It's just a small habit that seems to say, "I thought of you."

In the TikTok from @laurynnico, the camera closed in on an absolutely striking white baby fawn with two small black spots on either side of his head. His dark brown eyes were like huge, glossy chestnuts that could mesmerize whoever captures his glance. The darling deer's black nose and hooves were in sharp contrast to his snowy fur.

Apparently, the piebald fawn was on the very small side and earned a unique name from his rescuers.

How Rare Are Piebald Deer?

Less than 1 percent of the white-tailed deer populations is affected by piebaldism, making Lost and Found an incredibly rare fawn.

Piebaldism is caused by a recessive genetic trait that both parents must carry to produce a piebald fawn. Still, a piebald doe can reproduce a normal fawn, and a normal doe with the genetic mutation can give birth to a normal and a piebald fawn in the same litter.

When Do Maine Coon Kittens Start Exploring?

According to Maine Coon cat breeder Sassy Koonz, Maine Coon kittens begin experiencing significant growth right around 3 weeks of age, which is the age of the kittens featured in the video.

This is when they start actively walking and playing, so a cat gym is super entertaining for them.

These kittens are probably close to 2 pounds at this point.

It's amazing to think that when these tiny Maine Coon kittens are fully grown, the females will be between 12 and 15 pounds, and the males will reach between 18 and 22 pounds.

When they hit 5 weeks old, the kittens will start weaning off their mom, eating real food, getting all their vaccines, and becoming more socialized.

Then, by 8 weeks old, they will truly resemble real kittens with individual personalities and become even more confident and outgoing.

They will also develop that classic Maine Coon face with those lynx-like ears.

Fluffy, the stray cat, must've known that TikTok user @katiec2501 would welcome her with open arms, because that's exactly what happened. What began as Fluffy experimenting with different neighborhood homes, garages, and gated yards ended with her choosing the most perfect place to raise her babies.

If a feral cat mom brings kittens to your yard, don't panic. Some people, like Katie, find themselves in this situation unexpectedly, and it's OK to feel overwhelmed. By definition, feral cats are wild, but with careful planning, there are ways you can intervene to help without necessarily "unofficially" adopting them.

First, observe from a distance to see how the mama cat cares for her babies. They usually leave to hunt but return to them later. Provide fresh water and wet food for Mom to keep up with her energy output (nursing takes a lot out of a new mom).

Don't move the kittens unless they're in immediate danger. If you have to, put them in a box near the space Mom left them. In the long term, think ahead to the TNR approach: Trap-Spay/Neuter-Return to help control the cat population. Local shelters and rescues often help with this.

And finally, assess how socialized they are. Many feral cats and kittens can be adopted out—especially if you bring them indoors by 8 weeks of age. Which means Katie may already be in prime window territory with Fluffy's four.

In the meantime, Fluffy is making herself right at home on the catio, though Bardi isn't sure this is the right relationship for him:

Despite not being able to see her mom, Stevie turned toward the bed to face her and raised a paw to give her mother a "good morning" touch. Positive physical affection like soft petting, grooming, or relaxed cuddling can strengthen your bond and build confidence. On the other hand, rough or inconsistent handling may create stress, especially in more sensitive pets. “Dogs experience the world nose-first,” says Molly Jespersen, Camp Bow Wow training specialist. “What your dog smells shapes their mood, their stress levels and even their behavior. The scent of a new person in the home, another animal, a change in your own body chemistry when you are stressed or unwell or an unfamiliar cleaning product can all register as signals to four-legged friends.” 

That also means that scent enrichment is an important tool to have. “Letting your dog sniff freely on walks, hiding treats around the house or even introducing safe, novel scents gives your dog’s brain a workout and contributes to a calmer, more fulfilled life,” Jespersen says.

Your Mood and Emotional State

Your pet is constantly tuned in to how you feel. While you’ll naturally have ups and downs, your overall mood and temperament can have a real impact on their behavior and sense of security. Therefore, it can alter your pup's universe.

“Research has shown that dogs can detect human emotional states through scent alone, meaning your anxiety can be quite literally in the air,” Jespersen points out. Over time, pets learn to read these emotional cues, which can influence how relaxed, alert, or responsive they feel around you.

Household Sounds and Background Noise

You may not even notice sounds around your home, like the fridge humming or your HVAC kicking on. However, these form a “soundscape” to your pup over time and can have an affect on your dog's mood.

In fact, sounds outside your pet’s established pattern can throw them off, like a thunderstorm or construction noise. “White noise machines and calming music can help create a more settled environment for anxious pets,” Jespersen says. “Being intentional about your home's soundscape is a simple but surprisingly impactful part of your dog's overall wellbeing.”

Other dogs and animals play a major role in shaping your pet’s behavior, especially during early development. “The timing of socialization is one of the most significant factors in shaping who your dog becomes,” Jespersen reveals.

During a puppy’s early socialization window, experiences with other animals can have a lasting impact. Positive, gradual exposure helps build confidence and adaptability, while limited or negative interactions may lead to fear or reactivity later in life. That’s why controlled introductions, calm environments, and positive reinforcement are key when helping dogs learn how to safely interact with others. 

Their Daily Routine and Schedule

Believe it or not, a dog's routine is something they pay attention to once they have one. Many dogs are calmest when they know the household routine, says Amanda Farah, CPDT-K, national training and behavior coordinator at Best Friends Animal Society. But when the schedule changes, even slightly, your pup's entire world will be thrown off. 

“Consider how a person might feel if they woke up on payday and discovered their paycheck wasn’t deposited, that’s how a dog feels when no one shows up to feed them their dinner,” Farah says. “Do that a few times and they might start to worry that they’ll have to find a way to feed themselves.”

Jespersen recommends focusing on regular feeding, walks and sleep times to regulate your pup’s circadian rhythms and give them a framework for anticipating what comes next, which reduces anxiety. 

The Food You Feed Them

Another thing that your pet notices that can shape their world is what they eat. In fact, while food fuels your pup’s body, it also shapes their energy levels, ability to concentrate, coat and skin health and their mood, according to Jespersen. “The gut-brain connection is real in dogs just as it is in humans, and a diet that lacks key nutrients can show up as behavioral changes, lethargy and increased anxiety over time,” she says. 

Your Absence

Pets are highly aware of your presence—and your absence—and it plays a major role in shaping how they experience their world. They notice when you leave, how long you’re gone, and the patterns behind your daily comings and goings.

Over time, these routines help define whether their world feels predictable and safe or uncertain and stressful. Consistent departures and calm reunions can build confidence and reduce anxiety, while irregular or unpredictable schedules may be more challenging for sensitive pets.

In this way, your absence becomes part of how your pet understands their environment, their routine, and their bond with you.

How You Respond to Unwanted Behaviors

Your reaction to unwanted behavior can actually help shape how your pet understands right from wrong in their world.

“Dogs are constantly reading their owners, and your reaction to unwanted behavior is one of the clearest lessons you will ever teach a new dog,” Jespersen shares. But instinctive responses, like raising your voice, physically intervening or giving eye contact and attention, can inadvertently reinforce the behavior you want to stop, she says. 

“Yelling at a dog who is jumping up, for example, still provides the attention they were seeking,” Jespersen explains. “Punishment-based reactions can also erode trust and increase anxiety, particularly in sensitive or rescue dogs.” Instead, she recommends redirection and consistency—calmly interrupting the behavior, redirecting the dog to something acceptable and then rewarding the new behavior.

How You Reward and Praise Them

Your dog is always learning what gets your attention and what earns your praise.

“Positive reinforcement is not just a training philosophy—it is how dogs learn what is worth repeating,” Jespersen explains. “When a dog sits, comes when called or settles quietly, and that behavior is met with praise, a treat or play, their brain logs it as a behavior that pays off.”

If you move to another room, there's a good chance you'll hear the click, click, click of paws following close behind."

2. They pay attention to everything

German Shepherds are like sponges, detectives, fortune tellers and journalists all rolled into one. Murphy says there's a joke among GSD owners that their dogs know what they're about to do before they do. She says German Shepherds are pros at reading routines, body language and daily habits. It sounds like an intense combination, and it can be, but Murphy shares that the behavior is a sign of the dog's profound love for you.

"German Shepherds know when you're sad or upset and will come up and nuzzle you," Murphy says. "There's something truly special and touching about sharing your life with an animal that can read you at such a deep level."

3. They want you to be a team German Shepherds form strong, lasting bonds with their families.

If German Shepherds were gym class heroes, their motto would be, "Teamwork makes the dreamwork." One of Murphy's favorite things about living with German Shepherds is the feeling that you're doing life together.

"Whether you're gardening, folding laundry, working in the garage, or heading out for a walk, they are happiest when they're part of the action," Murphy shares.

This GSD' trait dates back to their initial purpose as working dogs, but they still thrive in partnerships today. "They are always want to be a part of your daily life and your teammate, even if it's just going to your garden with you. It’s a magical relationship that I firmly believe cannot be replicated by a human." 

4. They take their roles in your family very seriously

No job is too small for a GSD, but trust they'll develop a big attachment to it if you delegate it to them (or if they've just volunteered themselves for the gig).

"Many German Shepherds seem to view themselves as active members of the household team," Murphy explains. "They often position themselves where they can keep an eye on everyone and everything. Their desire for that human connection creates a strong sense of companionship that many owners cherish. I know I certainly do."

5. They form deep bonds

A German Shepherd may stop growing, but their hearts have no bounds.

"One of the most rewarding aspects of living with a German Shepherd is how the relationship deepens over time," Murphy says. "The more experiences you share together, the better they seem to understand you."

Murphy says that, like many GSD owners, she finds it hard to describe how well her Shepherd knows her to someone who has never had one. "That sense of mutual trust becomes stronger with each passing year," Murphy states. "As a trainer, I tell clients that dogs don’t understand language. But in the back of my mind, I truly believe that German Shepherds learn to understand us at a deeper level." 

6. They will comfort you

Maybe you just lost a beloved human family member, whom your dog barely knew but you adored. Or, perhaps you had a rough day at the office. Your German Shepherd may become more cuddly and attuned to your needs. You're not imagining things. Murphy's two GSDs do the same thing.

"While dogs may not fully understand human emotions the way another person would, they are exceptionally observant of changes in behavior and routine," Murphy says. "The comfort they provide during difficult times often becomes one of the most special parts of the relationship."

7. They leave a lasting mark on your heart

There's a reason Murphy has continued to call German Shepherd family members: She can't imagine her life without one, and many of her fellow GSD owners say the same.

"The breed has a unique way of becoming woven into your daily routine, family traditions and countless memories," Murphy shares. "Mostly, they weave their way deeply into your heart. Their loyalty, love, intelligence and companionship create bonds that run incredibly deep." 

Murphy says the breed thrives in homes that can provide high levels of training, activity and treat them like family. "While every dog is different, most German Shepherds enjoy having a job to do, even if that job is simply accompanying their owner through everyday activities," Murphy says. "They often do best with owners who appreciate both their intelligence, work capacity and their desire to be involved."
