How Rare Are Shar-Pei Cocker Spaniels?

The Shar-Pei Cocker Spaniel combo is a newer hybrid that's gaining popularity. These compact, wrinkled, and adorably charming dogs have a unique facial structure and body build, earning them the moniker of "Mini Hippo."

While most road trippers will calculate stops along the way, that doesn't always mean your cat is willing to go on schedule. Cats are creatures of habit, and their bathroom routine is no exception. A litter box that smells unfamiliar, sits in an awkward spot or gets jostled around in the backseat can be enough of a change to put them off using it entirely. Add in the stress of a moving vehicle, new sounds and changing scenery, and you've got a recipe for a very uncomfortable cat (and a very stressed-out pet parent).

Getting a cat to use the litter box at home is one thing. Getting them to go on a road trip? That's another challenge entirely.

The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. Whether you're embarking on a weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, these four litter box hacks will help keep your cat comfortable, your car clean and your road trip on track.

Why Cats Refuse to 'Go' on the Go

For cats, using the bathroom while on the road is far from ideal—and according to a veterinarian, it's not just stubbornness at play.

"Traveling can be extremely stressful, especially for our feline friends," says Dr. Katie Merkatoris, a licensed veterinarian in Madison, Wisconsin. "When animals are stressed and in fight-or-flight mode, the rest-and-digest functions of the body, such as urination and defecation, are often suppressed. Leaving feces and urine in the environment allows predators to track them, so many cats will refuse to urinate until they are back in a 'safe' environment with familiar sights and smells."

In other words, your cat isn't holding it out of spite. They're hardwired to wait until they feel safe, and the open road doesn't exactly signal safety to them.

Litter Box Hacks for Traveling With a Cat 

Before you get in the car with your cat, these are the four litter box tips you need to know.

1. Introduce a Portable Litter Box Early

An unfamiliar litter box in an unfamiliar place can feel like a double threat to a cat. To help take the edge off, start preparing your cat in a place they're familiar with—their home.

"Cats are creatures of habit," says Dr. Nathaniel Rakestraw, a veterinarian with TelaVets.com. "If the litter box, litter type or location suddenly changes, some cats will refuse to use it altogether. Whenever possible, I recommend introducing the travel litter box at home several days or even weeks before the trip. Familiar litter is usually more important than finding a special travel product."

The goal is simple: by the time the trip starts, the litter box shouldn't feel new.

2. Break Up Long Trips

It's tempting to push through and cover as many miles as possible, but your cat's bathroom schedule may require a different pace.

Dr. Merkatoris recommends offering your cat access to the litter box every four to six hours. This gives them enough time to build up the urge to use the bathroom without being pressured to use the litter box too frequently. It also helps establish a loose routine that can make roadside litter box visits feel a little more familiar over time.

3. Use Scoops From a Previous Litter Box

Smell is everything to a cat, and a brand-new litter box can feel completely foreign without the right scent cues.

"It's always best to take a few scoops from its previous litter box when offering a new one, so the new box doesn't smell completely foreign to them," says Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and director of Ferndale Kennels and Travel Pet Relocation Services.

A small amount of used litter brings a piece of home into an otherwise unfamiliar environment, and that familiarity can help make a difference.

4. Offer Your Cat a Quiet, Secure Location

Location matters more than you might think. A busy rest stop filled with strange sounds, smells and foot traffic is unlikely to put your cat in the right headspace to use their litter box.

Dr. Rakestraw says a quiet and secluded spot is almost always preferable to cats. When possible, let your cat use the litter box inside the parked car with the doors closed, rather than setting up the litter box in an open or high-traffic area.

What to Do If Your Cat Completely Refuses to Use the Box

Some cats will simply hold it for the duration of a trip. While that may sound alarming, it isn't always a cause for concern.

"It can be entirely normal for a cat to hold their bladder for 12 hours if in an unfamiliar environment," Dr. Merkatoris says. "Normal litter box activity should resume within several hours once travel ends. In the meantime, encourage water consumption by keeping water available or offering canned food or tuna, which is high in water content. Pheromone sprays, such as Feliway, can also help reduce stress. If you know your cat is likely to be overly stressed, consider discussing medication options with your veterinarian before any trips."

If you already know your cat refuses to use the litter box on long drives, a pre-trip vet conversation is a smart move; both to confirm they can safely hold it and to explore any options that might help.

Dehydration vs. Stress: Knowing When to Call a Vet on the Road

Not every bathroom refusal is behavioral. In some cases, a cat may be physically unable to go, and that's a different situation entirely.

"Mild stress may cause a cat to hide, eat less than usual or skip a litter box visit during the first part of a trip," Dr. Rakestraw says. "What concerns me more is persistent vomiting, profound lethargy, labored breathing, signs of pain, repeated attempts to urinate without success, or a cat that has gone an unusually long time without drinking or urinating. Those situations deserve a call to a veterinarian rather than a wait-and-see approach."

Dr. Murdoch adds that male cats in particular should be monitored closely, as difficulty urinating in males may signal a serious and potentially urgent medical issue.

A cat that won't use the litter box on a road trip is usually just a stressed cat doing what stressed cats do. With a familiar box, some used litter, regular stops and a quiet spot to do their thing, most cats can be coaxed into making it work—even if it takes a little extra patience along the way.

When it comes to kittens, I think Maine Coon kittens are among the most beautiful. There's something about their gorgeous colors and fluffy coats, even from birth, that really makes them irresistible.

On TikTok, Tassel Ears Cattery shared a good look at one of their newest litters. First, they showed off the very handsome dad, a large, black smoke Maine Coon with piercing amber eyes, and then, we get to see the mom,

Finally, it's time for the kittens to show off a little, as they should — they are truly beautiful cats.

Each of them looks like the perfect mix of their parents, ranging from different shades of gray and black that have come together in such a special way.

They're so tiny they haven't even opened their eyes yet, but judging by the size of their parents, they won't be tiny for long!

What Determines a Maine Coon's Coloring?

As Petful points out, there are 75 Maine Coon colors that are recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA), so it would be a huge understatement to say that the possibilities of what a kitten could look like are vast.

But just like with humans, the way a Maine Coon kitten will look all comes down to genetics, and that includes their coat color. The 75 colors are the different color and pattern combinations that are possible when breeding these cats.

First, a Maine Coon will have a base color, which are black, cream, red, blue, and white, and the pattern of their coat will vary from there, depending on whether or not they're a tabby variation, have smoke or silver genes in their bloodline, or have bicolor white spotting. Female Maine Coons may also have some tortoiseshell or calico patterns mixed in.

The way that these kittens' parents' genes combined created a litter of kittens who are the perfect mix of them both. They are so beautiful!

Meet Reggie. He is a blue French Bulldogwith giant bat ears, soulful eyes and a face that permanently says "Whatcha doing?" He is equal parts adorable, nosy and determined to be involved in absolutely everything. If you sit down for five seconds he is already in your lap, your business and your heart. He is also, as of this TikTok, the CEO of Velcro Dogs and he takes that title very seriously.

What follows is Reggie going from zero to absolute chaos in the time it takes to exhale. The snorts arrive first. Then those frenchie grunts and then, the zoomies. Then whatever specific noise he makes that his mom felt required documentation and three crying-laugh emojis. The sounds alone are a whole event. The zoomies are a separate event all together. Together they are an experience.

The comments understood instantly:

Benny Badass. A French Bulldog alter ego with an official name. Every Frenchie parent reading this just nodded in agreement.

Stop. A French Bulldog faking a bathroom emergency specifically to steal a warm seat is the most strategically advanced behavior documented in this entire comment section. And, as a Frenchie mom of two, I can vouch that this is top notch frenchie mischievousness. This dog planned it. This dog executed it. He’s sitting in that warm spot right now.

"Pure trouble"

Two simple words. Completely accurate.

The chaos that follows them is not random. It’s a whole personality trait built into the breed.

Why French Bulldogs Are Basically Tiny Chaos Agents With Very Big Feelings

Here’s the thing about French Bulldogs. According to Houndsy, they’re best described as "clowns in the cloak of a philosopher" and if you have ever lived with one you already know exactly what that means. You also know that it is 1000% true.

Frenchies are what the source calls velcro dogs. They don’t just want to be near you - they want to be part of you. They adore you. They want to be touching you at all times. They were bred specifically to be companions and they take that job very seriously. This is why Reggie cannot allow 5 milliseconds of sitting down go unaddressed. It’s literally his job.

Frenchies are also deeply tuned into their humans' emotions and will actively try to change the mood in a room. If Reggie's mom was putting out the vibe that she was about to relax, that was a situation requiring immediate action.

French Bulldogs are highly intelligent and deeply motivated by comfort and closeness. Fully committed to being wherever their person is or in this case wherever their person was just sitting.

The alarm will sound again. It always does. His mama wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ragdoll cats are supposed to be the chillest cats in the world. Floppy. Gentle. Unbothered by practically everything. Tora has something to say about that.

She considers the moment like someone standing outside a double dutch jump in, watching the ropes, timing the entry. She pulls back. She reconsiders. Maybe it is too risky. Maybe she forgot the plan entirely. It happens. Then she gathers herself, finds her courage and goes straight for the camera with complete conviction.

Every possible human reaction to watching this is in there somewhere. Confusion. Delight. A cross-species comparison nobody asked for and everyone needed. The most charitable interpretation saved for last.

But here's the question everyone's really asking: why does a Ragdoll — the breed famous for going completely limp when you pick them up — have this much to say?

Why Even the Calmest Cat Breeds Have Their Moments

The Ragdoll's reputation for calm goes way back. According to The Catsite, the breed got its start in Riverside, California in the 1960s. A breeder named Ann Baker had a white longhaired cat named Josephine who started producing kittens so calm and floppy they basically invented the concept of going limp when held. That trait became the breed's signature move and eventually its name.

The real reason is a lot less dramatic. Several generations of very relaxed cats producing more very relaxed cats. The breeding program leaned into calm breeds including Persians and Birmans and the chill personality got passed down right alongside the blue eyes and the floofy neck ruff.

The Catsite describes Ragdolls as affectionate, intelligent, relaxed, gentle and ideal lap cats. They're often called puppy cats because they follow their people around loyally and actively seek out physical affection. They like to stay close to the ground and will happily chase a toy well into their senior years.

So what is going on when one of them goes full mad bunny?

The Catsite notes that Ragdolls are actually energetic and need companionship. They do best with people or other animals around them and loneliness can genuinely affect their mood. Even the calmest and most docile cat has feelings. They just don't always have a plan for them.

Sometimes the feelings come out as a very committed shuffle. Sometimes thumping. Sometimes a double dutch moment of gathering courage before going straight at the camera.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup brought international teams, millions of fans, and one very specific problem to Toronto: Canada geese. Sally and Ben work for Border Control Bird Dogs, a company from Stirling, Ontario. Gareth Williams, the owner of the company, explained how the dogs help keep geese away.

The dogs crouch down and stalk the geese. Border collies' herding instinct to herd sheep and move livestock helps.

As Williams told CTV News Toronto, "Geese then start thinking the border collies are predators in that area, and it encourages them to leave."

Sally and Ben's Daily Routine

Sally and Ben go to the pitch twice a day, every day, for about 30 minutes per session. Williams adjusts the schedule based on geese activity, which he suspects is concentrated around a river running behind the pitch, where the birds have likely nested.

Ben is the more enthusiastic of the two. Williams told Global News that he waits at Williams' car from first light. As the company's owner says, Ben can work all day, and the moment he comes back home, he wants to do it again.

Border Collies Were Born for This Job

Bred with the perfect combination of prey drive and restraint, border coolies have herded sheep for centuries.

They can move aggressively toward an animal, yet control how close they get and stop on command. They do it all while holding their instinctive posture that, to birds, looks like a predator.

Dogs with higher prey drive may chase and scatter the birds. Dogs with too little prey drive will get ignored. Border collies fit squarely in the middle ground, where they look like a threat to birds and can respond quickly to a command.

Sally and Ben are at the field long before the players arrive. They have been working and preparing the venues for players to perform at the highest level.

Some dogs find their role at the World Cup, like Sally and Ben. Others find it by showing off their skills as actual players.

Some animals become mascots for the fans. But with the FIFA World Cup in full effect, everybody wants a slice of it. Sally and Ben are making sure the playing fields remain ready for the biggest soccer tournament.

I am a mom to both two small human children and a dog, and I can say with great confidence that their attention needs are all very similar. I have always loved German Shepherds. My sister rescues them, so I've been lucky enough to meet quite a few over the years, and they never fail to amaze me. They're incredibly smart, unbelievably affectionate and somehow manage to be both giant protectors and oversized babies at the exact same time.

Which is why this adorable German Shepherd puppy absolutely melted my heart. From Circus Performer to Animal Advocate 

Steve-O's passion for animals didn't begin with the nonprofit he runs today—or even with the pets he had growing up. Instead, he traces the roots of his activism back to an unlikely place: clown college.

While attending the now-closed Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, Steve-O remembers a media-training session that left a lasting impression. Representatives from the circus instructed students on how to handle questions from reporters, particularly when it came to the treatment of animals.

"They said some of you will be working for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus—the greatest show on earth—and your job will entail going to the city that the circus is going to be in advance," Steve-O recalls. "You'll be doing interviews to promote the circus... sometimes you're going to be asked about animals. If that happens, you say nothing. You know you have no opinion. You shut up and fall down. You're a clown. I remember it feeling aggressive."

Later, while working for another circus that traveled with elephants and a tiger, Steve-O became increasingly troubled by what he witnessed. Stories of stressed animals and cramped living conditions changed the way he viewed the industry.

"The whole animals-in-the-circus thing bothered me a lot," he says.

His outspoken criticism of circus animal practices eventually caught the attention of PETA after he discussed the issue during a 2006 appearance on Tom Green's House Tonight. The organization soon invited him to participate in a public service campaign opposing the use of animals in circuses. Steve-O later joined PETA's well-known "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign and gradually changed his own lifestyle, first eliminating most meat from his diet before eventually embracing veganism during his recovery journey.

Looking back, Steve-O tells us he sees those early experiences as the beginning of a lifelong commitment to speaking up for animals—a mission that would ultimately lead him to create Radical Ranch.

If you've never heard of Radical Ranch, it's a nonprofit animal sanctuary that Steve-O launched in 2024. He says the goal is to inspire compassion for animals and help people everywhere—including his Jackass fans—see just how intelligent and loving these creatures can be.

"I wanted it to be positive," Steve-O shares. "I thought I could buy a big property and turn it into an animal sanctuary that could ultimately get to a place where we can facilitate encounters with animals—where someone could look into the eye of an animal and see that it has emotions, intelligence, feelings—we could cultivate and spread compassion far and wide."

To Steve-O, the spirit of Radical Ranch is rooted in kindness and connection. "It's about just being kind to animals and seeking to cultivate compassion for animals through compassion for people as well," he explains.

Where is Radical Ranch located? 

Radical Ranch spans 44 acres in Tennessee. For Steve-O, the move was intentional and shaped by both practical concerns and a growing desire to build something focused on animal rescue outside of Los Angeles.

He was living in the Hollywood Hills in the early 2020s when he began hearing that some homeowners were struggling to renew insurance policies due to wildfire risk. Around the same time, a trip to Nashville for a UFC event gave him an unexpected opportunity to explore a new possibility.

"I said, 'We'll go I for the fights, and we'll use four days while we're there to look at properties,'" Steve-O tells us. "We looked at properties for three days, and nothing was a hit. Then, the real estate agent said he had one random property that was the total opposite—nowhere near like anything else we looked at."

Steve-O says he was impressed from the jump. He says what stood out to him wasn't just the house, it was everything around it.

"The house was cool, but then they drove me through the woods around the property," Steve-O recalls. "There's a one-mile-long trail that goes in a loop around the property, and it's so awesome. It's a rad trail. By the time we were done driving around the trail, I was like, 'I have to have this! The potential for rescuing animals is off the charts."

From there, his dream of rescuing animals and giving them a better life became a reality.

What Animals Has Steve-O Rescued so Far? 

Today, Steve-O tells us Radical Ranch is home to nine animals, but he's hoping to continue to add more over time. "Right now we have a mix of dogs, cats, pigs and goats," he notes.

And as you might expect, they have some fun names, too. A couple of which he really loves. "We have a cat named Winifred Winfrey and Fonzarelli the pig," he reveals while opening up about how he helped some of the animals get out of bad situations.

"My team and I rescued Fonzarelli from a man with terminal cancer and we rescued some of the goats from another sanctuary that had taken them in after their owner, a petting zoo operator, had substance use issues," he reveals.

The Jackass: Best and Last star tells us he'd like to eventially have other types of animals there one day as well. "I'd love to rescue some cows," he smiles.

Can You Visit Radical Ranch? 

Currently, Radical Ranch is not open to the public, but Steve-O tells us he hopes that's something he can make happen in the future. "I imagine, at one point, we will be," Steve-O says. "But I also live here, so it's a private residence."

Because of that, Steve-O is trying to figure out how to make all of that work out.

Still, he knows letting the public on the ranch could boost fundraising, so he's keeping an open mind. In the meantime, people can meet the rescues on his ranch's website where their pictures are shared as well as info about each one, personality traits and fun facts.

How Can You Support Steve-O's Resuced Animals?

If you're a fan of Steve-O and an animal lover as well, he says fans can still help support the animals on his ranch. In fact, when people donate money to the ranch, in exchange, Steve-O says he offers to give them the tattoo in exchange. He notes that actually started when people began asking him to ink them up, even though he is not a tattoo artist, so he received some coaching from a friend who is one.

"I would feel weird if I charged anybody for a tattoo, so I never did," Steve-O said. "Then I thought, 'There's a crazy demand...what if I offer to give people tattoos to raise money for charity?"

"It's for my nonprofit, so there's no set price," Steve-O states. "I don't want it to be a barrier for entry. If somebody submits a design that I think is funny or awesome, and I like the creativity, and it works within my ability, I won't be super concerned about how much the donation is. If the donation is super worth it, I'll do whatever you want. It's proven to be a good way to fundraise and help the animals there."

The kitten, referred to only as "Boy" on social media, is distinct with his creamy fur and his absolutely lovely eye color.

How to Groom a Maine Coon

There are so many things to consider when thinking about adding a Maine Coon to your life, but one of the biggest aspects people sometimes forget is maintaining a Maine Coon's fur and coat.

Maine Coons are known for their long, luxurious coats, which require frequent brushing and maintenance to keep your cat pretty and happy. Starting grooming early is key, getting kittens used to the idea of being brushed. For Maine Coons, it's also not a bad idea to acclimate them to bathing and water, as their dense coats can hide a lot of dirt, dead hair, and other impurities.

Managing matting is essential, as that can pull on the skin and be painful and detrimental to the cat. Regular brushing and detangling tools can help prevent this.

Supplements and diet can also help support a healthy coat, so consulting with a vet for those additions to your cat's diet can be a great option.
