There are big dogs, and then there are dogs that make you wonder whether somebody wandered into the exotic cat enclosure and came back out holding a leash. I love a giant dog, but even I would probably need a second to process what I was looking at if this guy came strolling toward me.

This absolutely enormous black Cane Corso is basically what would happen if a panther decided he was tired of living in the jungle and wanted snacks, a comfy bed and somebody to tell him he’s a good boy. His pitch black fur and massive build make him look almost unreal.

That’s it.

But when you look like a 130-pound jungle cat, you don’t need a plot.

The huge Cane Corso casually strolls along beside his pet parent on a leash, looking so incredibly powerful and majestic that I’m not entirely convinced somebody isn’t going to ask to see the paperwork proving he’s a dog.

The Cane Corso is an Italian mastiff breed, and these dogs were historically used as working dogs and guardians. They’re known for their muscular builds, intelligence, and protective nature.

And yes, they’re big. Adult Cane Corsos can stand well over two feet tall at the shoulder, with males generally larger than females. Their size and strength are two reasons early socialization and consistent training are so important with this breed.

They’re also not necessarily the best choice for someone looking for their very first dog. A Cane Corso needs a pet parent prepared to handle a large, powerful, and intelligent dog and give them the training, exercise and structure they need.

But with this guy, I keep coming back to the same problem.

Imagine waking up at 2 a.m., walking into your dark kitchen, and seeing this enormous black silhouette standing beside the refrigerator.

Both of my dogs have short-haired coats that don’t require much grooming. My Pug’s honey-golden fur sheds a ton but is quite manageable, and his Doxie sister’s shiny black coat is also easy to maintain. They don’t have to deal with the upkeep their more fluffy-haired fur baby friends need on a regular basis.

Max the Poodle mix is a perfect example of a canine with a cloud-like coat. The precious pooch probably gets frequent brushing just to keep that caramel-colored hair under control.

In the TikTok from @max.hawt.dawg, the pretty Poodle stared into the camera and showed off his bright blue bandana. His mother was expressing some positive affirmations to start Max’s day off on the right paw.

“Everybody loves you, did you know that?” his mom asked, though Max looked unmoved. “You’re so cute, little sweetie. I love your eyelashes and your lips.”

Max’s adorability and charm were undeniable, with his floofy coat being a major showstopper. The mounds of wavy fur resembled a buttery toffee dessert heaped on his head in generous spoonfuls. You could barely see his little eyes peering out from under all the fleecy fluff, along with his prominent underbite attempting to form a smile.

From the amount of rave reviews his social media post racked up, his mom was spot on about Max’s popularity:

If you have a Maine Coon, you already know that giving them a bowl of water does not necessarily mean they’re going to drink it like a normal cat. I know this because my Maine Coon Meatball plays in every water dish he sees, drops his toys in there, splashes around and then walks away leaving me with a wet floor and absolutely no explanation.

So the minute I saw Coal sitting basically ON TOP of his electric water fountain, I knew. Yep. Another one. Coal is a huge fluffy grey Maine Coon and apparently nobody explained to him that this is a drinking fountain and not his own personal water park.

Maine Coons have a reputation for being unusually interested in water, although obviously every cat is different. Some love splashing in bowls, pawing at running faucets or investigating showers, while others would prefer that water stay over there where it belongs.

Moving water can be especially interesting to cats, which may explain why a fountain gets so much attention. And with those big Maine Coon paws, one little curious tap can turn into an indoor splash zone pretty quickly.

A fountain can be a great way to encourage some cats to drink, but keeping it clean and changing the water regularly is important.

Also, apparently, you may want to buy a baking pan.

I used to think Meatball was just a weirdo until I started seeing other Maine Coons doing the exact same thing.

Now I realize he’s still a weirdo.

Roses are one of my favorite flowers. I know they’re kind of basic, but I don’t even care. I just think they’re so beautiful, and the combination of rose and vanilla is one of my favorite scents of all time. If anything is rose-related, there’s a pretty good chance I’m going to love it.

Sassy Koonz Cattery has so many different cats, but the orange ones are always my favorites. I grew up on Garfield like everyone else! I’ll always have a soft spot for orange cats, and he’s no exception. From this video, you might think he’s calm; she’s bouncing a toy right in front of him!

He is not calm at all. Don’t let that fool you. When the cameras are off, he’s as orange as it gets! He likes to cause fights, scratch everything, and really leave his mark on the cattery. He wants them to remember him when he goes off to his forever home.

Don’t mess with tuxedo cat siblings, Cricket and Tucker, because boy, are they tough. Tough to take seriously, that is. In this hilarious video, the cats square off as if about to brawl. They size each other up and take their time to see who will strike first. But in reality, the felines are engaged in the laziest, least dangerous cat fight on record. How to Tell If Cats Are Playing or Really Fighting

These two tuxedos weren’t being aggressive, obviously. Even if they had decided to put some real energy into it, they were only engaging in some harmless play-fighting. Sometimes, though, it can be hard to tell whether cats are behaving normally or behaving badly. What are the signs of both?

Play is reciprocal. Cats that are just goofing around trade turns, and neither one is doing all the pouncing. Ears stay relaxed, fur stays flat, bodies face each other head-on, and any biting is gentle and without claws. Mostly, they just look calm. The occasional squeak is normal.

A real fight, according to veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward, differs in every way. Pupils blow wide, ears flatten back against the skull, whiskers push forward, and mouths open with teeth showing. You will see a cat’s fur puff up along the tail and spine, and the claws do come out. The sounds, however, are the clearest giveaway — guttural meowing, hissing, growling, yowling, and noises that are nothing like the little chirps that come with play.

If it is the real thing, never use your hands or your feet to break it up, or you might become collateral damage. Redirect cats with a toy, a sharp clap, or a spray of water, and then separate them before checking both cats for injuries.

I love an orange cat (I have two!), but apparently being orange wasn’t quite enough for this little guy because somebody went back at the last minute and gave him ONE completely different paw. He’s a beautiful creamy orange all over and then you get down to this one front foot and suddenly there are black and orange patches mixed in with his little pink toes.

I know dogs love us, but sometimes I wonder if they also spend most of their day quietly studying us so they can make fun of us later. This Mini Aussie sees his dad walking around on crutches and apparently thinks okay, so THIS is how we’re walking now.

Dogs pay an incredible amount of attention to people, and research has shown that they can learn by watching and copying human actions.

That doesn’t necessarily mean this Mini Aussie understands exactly why Dad is limping or has made a conscious decision to imitate an injury. If you’re retired and you want a petite pooch who will happily lounge with you, this pretty dog breed could be for you! “Bolognese dogs are affectionate companions with relatively modest exercise needs,” Warner says. As a result, she notes that they are one of the more easygoing dog breeds to consider if you’re looking for a smaller companion.

While these pups have a long coat that needs daily grooming, they aren’t known for being a big shedder. For seniors who prefer a dog that doesn’t leave much hair around the house, that can be a nice perk.

While they do need regular walks, Bolognese dogs aren’t hyperactive. Overall, they are calm, gentle dogs that like to please their owners and don’t bark a lot.

Just be aware that Pugs are a brachycephalic breed, meaning they have flat faces. “Their flat faces put them at risk of serious breathing, overheating and eye problems, so their health and potential veterinary needs must be considered carefully,” Warner says.

I know this particular look very well because when my Maine Coon, Meatball, has all of his hair, he can lie down in certain positions and cease looking like an animal entirely. One of my favorite things about Maine Coons is that these enormous cats don’t necessarily have enormous voices to match.

Many Maine Coons are known for communicating with chirps and trills in addition to regular meows. And when you’ve got a giant fluffy cat making tiny bird noises, the combination is ridiculously cute.

Meatball does the same kind of thing. Maine Coons can look so majestic until they open their mouths and make a noise that sounds like somebody squeezed a tiny squeaky toy.

Rusty certainly seems to have plenty to say from his bathtub.

What he’s saying is less clear. Maybe the bathtub is cool. Maybe the acoustics are excellent.

Maybe he’s waiting for someone to bring him a tiny towel and cucumber slices for his spa appointment.

Whatever the reason, I’m not questioning him.

There are certain things I don’t expect to get stuck in my head for the rest of the day. A song created by an animal shelter about boy cats would normally be pretty high on that list, but apparently the Humane Society of Utah has decided we all need a new fall anthem.

Fall just feels like a particularly cozy time to welcome a cat into your family.

The weather starts cooling down, the blankets come out and suddenly spending an evening on the couch with a purring cat curled up beside you sounds approximately 400% better than leaving the house.

Adopting from a shelter or rescue also gives a cat in need a home while opening space for another animal who needs help. And depending on your lifestyle, an adult cat can be a wonderful option, too. Their personalities may be easier to get a sense of than a tiny kitten’s, and plenty would love nothing more than a comfortable couch and somebody to adore.

There’s no stronger bond between a woman and her Dachshund.

It seems from the comments that Dachshunds tend to be possessive of their parents when it comes to showing affection to another person.

One person wrote in the comments section: “It’s because they are pack animals; they don’t want to miss out.”

Another said, “That’s exactly what happens in our household, but we have two of them. There’s no longer any romance between hubby and I… It’s between us and our girls.”

So is this a Dachshund thing?

Well, Dachshunds can be a possessive breed because it’s simply in their nature.

They were bred to be hunting dogs (for little badgers and rats), so they’re naturally territorial, according to Green Cross Vets.

Just like food and toys, they value their human as a resource they must care for and protect.

It’s not easy being a massive dog in an average-sized world. Just ask Bowser, a 200-pound English Mastiff. During his daily strolls around his home, he often gets “stuck” in places most other dogs could easily exit. But not Bowser. He has to call in the even bigger guns: his mom.

“Are you stuck? Do you need help?” Bowser’s mom calls out to him just before finding the giant pooch facing the back of the bathroom, with no ability to reverse out. It’s a pathetic scene, but one that she claims is just “a day in the life of having giant dogs.”

How Big Do Mastiffs Get?

Big enough that a poke around a standard bathroom was never going to end well.

A full-grown male English mastiff stands at least 30 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 160 and 230 pounds. Females are only marginally less imposing at 27.5 inches and up, and 120 to 170 pounds. Put another way, the average male mastiff outweighs most of the people he lives with — and that’s before you account for the head, which is enormous, and the very broad chest.

They’re also, by reputation, lovely about all of it. The breed is described as patient, dignified, and affable, with a serious, affectionate streak, protective enough to make a good guard dog while staying a little reserved around strangers.

And what does it take to fuel such a formidable beast? According to one dog trainer, an adult mastiff eats about 6 to 10 cups of dry food per day. This amount should be split across two or three meals rather than one, which lowers the risk of bloat and will keep your canine lean. Mastiff joints are carrying enough already… as will your grocery budget!

Niall Harbison, founder of the Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo, encounters street dogs suffering from trauma and abuse on a daily basis. Though the tender-hearted Husky suffered from disabled limbs due to his confinement, he fearlessly fought to gain the use of his legs with the help of Harbison and his staff.

“From the moment he arrived, our team were determined to give him a chance,” the story continued. “They have worked so hard with Timothee, helping him build strength in his legs and giving him the time, care and support he needed to keep improving.”

Timothee Loves His Newfound Freedom

Thanks to the tireless commitment and effort of the Happy Doggo team, Timothee now uses his back legs like a pro and is enjoying the freedom he truly deserves.

While your first instinct might be a bit like mine (panic and freak out about tick-borne diseases and your doggie getting sick), it’s not necessary. With prompt and precise tick removal, you may help avoid any negative consequences of a tick exposure or bite, keeping your dog safe, happy and healthy.

To learn more about what to do if you find a tick on your dog, we spoke with Dr. Lori Ross, DVM, a veterinarian and medical director at Emergency Veterinary Care Centers. Dr. Ross shares why you shouldn’t freak out if you find one of these parasites on your dog. She also provides a detailed, step-by-step instruction for how to safely remove a tick from your dog, as well as symptoms to look out for after a bite and when it might be time to call the vet.

Step 1: Don’t Panic (And Stop Using These Old Home Remedies)

“Finding a tick on your dog can be alarming, but try not to panic. A tick bite does not automatically mean your dog will become sick,” Dr. Ross says. “The important thing is to remove the tick promptly and safely, since the risk of disease transmission generally increases the longer an infected tick remains attached. Most studies state the tick has to be attached for at least 24 hours.”

“Skip remedies like petroleum jelly, nail polish, alcohol or trying to burn the tick with a match. These methods can irritate or injure your dog and may cause the tick to release more saliva or other material into the bite site. You also don’t want to squeeze or crush the tick while it is attached,” Dr. Ross says.

How to Safely Remove a Tick From Your Dog in 3 Steps

Removing a tick is all about precision and patience. “First, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool to grasp the tick as close to your dog’s skin as possible,” Dr. Ross says. “Second, pull upward with slow, steady pressure without twisting or jerking. Third, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an appropriate antiseptic after the tick has been removed.”

After you remove the tick, Dr. Ross recommends trying to save it and store it in a sealed container in case your vet needs to identify it. And, of course, if you are scared to remove the tick yourself, Dr. Ross says you can contact your veterinarian or an urgent care pet clinic to have it professionally removed.

When to Call the Vet and What Symptoms to Watch For

“After a tick bite, watch for changes such as lethargy, decreased appetite, fever, swollen joints, lameness, weakness, vomiting or unusual bleeding or bruising,” Dr. Ross says. “Some tick-borne diseases can take three to eight weeks to cause noticeable symptoms, so it’s important to keep an eye on your dog even months after the tick has been removed.”

If you are unable to completely remove the tick, if the affected area becomes red, swollen or painful, or if your pup has any other unusual symptoms after the bite, call your vet.

“You should also contact your veterinarian if your dog isn’t on consistent tick prevention so they can recommend an appropriate product and discuss whether any additional monitoring is needed.  There is also a vaccine for Lyme that, when used with prevention, helps to deter this disease,” Dr. Ross says. “Your veterinarian may want to run tests to monitor for tick-borne diseases a few months after the exposure.  In the case of a positive Lyme disease test, if the dog is not clinical (meaning a fever and joint pain), additional testing may be needed to determine if it is an active infection versus exposure.”

Armed with this information, you can keep your dog safe during tick season. Remember: Don’t panic, remove the tick promptly and monitor your dog for any signs or symptoms of a tick-borne illness.

An Outdoor Cat for One More Night

The woman shared the story, saying this gray gentleman and his friend were terrorizing a female cat. He was a young, intact and hungry cat.

She managed to get close to him because he came running toward her, yelling. He let her pet him for several minutes before trying to fight the other cat again. He even had a fresh-looking collection of scratches and a scar across his nose.

The gray cat has been in his new home for a short time, but he’s adjusting quickly. As his possibly permanent parent explained, he eats, sleeps, and lets her pet him.

What Do Different Dog Sounds Mean?

When we think about the different sounds dogs make, most of us are probably imaging the two big ones: barking and howling. But depending on the type of vocalization, their sounds all mean different things.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), there are a few types of dog sounds you should look out for:

• Barks — These can mean different things, depending on the pitch, body language, and behavior of your dog in the moment. If they seem to look defensive and are letting our loud, angry barks, they’re probably trying to protect their humans, but if they’re letting out excited, happy little yaps, they’re just glad to see you.
• Whining and crying — This sound means your dog really wants you to help them with something, whether it’s taking them out for a potty break or serving them food. In some circumstances, it may even indicate that they’re in pain.
• Howling — For some dogs, howling is just fun. For others, they’re howling to mark their territory, and sometimes, you may even catch them howling along with music that’s playing or even a siren.
• Growling — Growling can be both serious and playful, so check on your dog’s body language to determine which it is. If they’re growling out of anger, it’s time to take action, since this vocalization can sometimes escalate to biting.

Our dogs may not be able to speak human language, but if we can learn to understand their sounds, we’ll be able to communicate with them just fine.

The 6-year-old cat never had trouble with her extra toes before, but once pain became part of her life, her parents decided to do something. They found a cat orthopedist who determined that Yams was putting weight on the extra toes. A month after the surgery, Yams’ parents posted an update on Reddit’s r/ploydactyl.

The Warning Signs Are Easy to Miss

Yams’ parents noticed the chewing first. She was pulling on the claws of those extra toes and biting them into stubs, while leaving her other claws alone. Then, Yams’ posture began to change as she started putting weight on the malformed toes.

Those are the types of changes cat parents should pay attention to—even more if you have a polydactyl cat. Regular nail care and veterinary evaluation is a must.

Unfortunately for Yams, the cat orthopedist confirmed the worst, meaning Yams would have to go through with a surgical removal. In the Reddit post, her parents explained, “We loved her big paws, so it’s like we’re feeling the loss more than she is.”

Thankfully, Yams recovered relatively quickly, though day two brought some swelling in her right paw. Luckily, her parents treated it with massage and antibiotics. Her stitches came out after two weeks, and soon after, the incision was barely visible.

However, Yams’ biggest challenge was the cone. She hated wearing it, and sometimes urinated outside the litter box while adjusting to it.

Before the operation, Yams had a distinctive gait. She would swing her legs out to the side to avoid her extra thumbs touching the ground. After surgery, her owner noticed a real change: Yams now moves her legs straight back and forth instead of compensating sideways.

She also wants to play more than before, which is a clear sign the pain is gone. Her parent says she uses scratching surfaces normally and keeps trying to climb the hat rack, even though she’s still recovering.

Most Polydactyl Cats Do Just Fine

Yams’ situation isn’t typical for polydactyl felines. In fact, the genetic trait is quite common in cats and rarely causes problems.

Her parents also stress that the experience is unusual. There’s no reason for someone with a healthy, comfortable polydactyl cat to put her feline under surgery.

Most Redditors shared similar sentiments. “I feel like it’s important to add that most polydactyl cats live full lives without any major problems or pain so that people don’t panic,” said one commenter. “My girl has a perfectly normal gait, run, and jump. She’s never shown signs of pain.”

“My boy has one paw that has a weird toenail growing in between his pads and I have to constantly check it and trim it so it doesn’t become ingrown and cause major issues,” wrote another.
