You found a tick on your dog. Now what?

While your first instinct might be a bit like mine (panic and freak out about tick-borne diseases and your doggie getting sick), it’s not necessary. With prompt and precise tick removal, you may help avoid any negative consequences of a tick exposure or bite, keeping your dog safe, happy and healthy.

To learn more about what to do if you find a tick on your dog, we spoke with Dr. Lori Ross, DVM, a veterinarian and medical director at Emergency Veterinary Care Centers. Dr. Ross shares why you shouldn’t freak out if you find one of these parasites on your dog. She also provides a detailed, step-by-step instruction for how to safely remove a tick from your dog, as well as symptoms to look out for after a bite and when it might be time to call the vet.

Keeping this information in mind is especially important right now as a dog owner because ticks are still active in the fall. Read on below to learn everything you need to know about safely removing a tick from your dog and other important information to keep your dog healthy and safe this season.

Step 1: Don’t Panic (And Stop Using These Old Home Remedies)

“Finding a tick on your dog can be alarming, but try not to panic. A tick bite does not automatically mean your dog will become sick,” Dr. Ross says. “The important thing is to remove the tick promptly and safely, since the risk of disease transmission generally increases the longer an infected tick remains attached. Most studies state the tick has to be attached for at least 24 hours.”

“Skip remedies like petroleum jelly, nail polish, alcohol or trying to burn the tick with a match. These methods can irritate or injure your dog and may cause the tick to release more saliva or other material into the bite site. You also don’t want to squeeze or crush the tick while it is attached,” Dr. Ross says.

How to Safely Remove a Tick From Your Dog in 3 Steps

Removing a tick is all about precision and patience. “First, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool to grasp the tick as close to your dog’s skin as possible,” Dr. Ross says. “Second, pull upward with slow, steady pressure without twisting or jerking. Third, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an appropriate antiseptic after the tick has been removed.”

After you remove the tick, Dr. Ross recommends trying to save it and store it in a sealed container in case your vet needs to identify it. And, of course, if you are scared to remove the tick yourself, Dr. Ross says you can contact your veterinarian or an urgent care pet clinic to have it professionally removed.

When to Call the Vet and What Symptoms to Watch For

“After a tick bite, watch for changes such as lethargy, decreased appetite, fever, swollen joints, lameness, weakness, vomiting or unusual bleeding or bruising,” Dr. Ross says. “Some tick-borne diseases can take three to eight weeks to cause noticeable symptoms, so it’s important to keep an eye on your dog even months after the tick has been removed.”

If you are unable to completely remove the tick, if the affected area becomes red, swollen or painful, or if your pup has any other unusual symptoms after the bite, call your vet.

“You should also contact your veterinarian if your dog isn’t on consistent tick prevention so they can recommend an appropriate product and discuss whether any additional monitoring is needed.  There is also a vaccine for Lyme that, when used with prevention, helps to deter this disease,” Dr. Ross says. “Your veterinarian may want to run tests to monitor for tick-borne diseases a few months after the exposure.  In the case of a positive Lyme disease test, if the dog is not clinical (meaning a fever and joint pain), additional testing may be needed to determine if it is an active infection versus exposure.”

Armed with this information, you can keep your dog safe during tick season. Remember: Don’t panic, remove the tick promptly and monitor your dog for any signs or symptoms of a tick-borne illness.

An Outdoor Cat for One More Night

The woman shared the story, saying this gray gentleman and his friend were terrorizing a female cat. He was a young, intact and hungry cat.

She managed to get close to him because he came running toward her, yelling. He let her pet him for several minutes before trying to fight the other cat again. He even had a fresh-looking collection of scratches and a scar across his nose.

At that point, the woman made a decision and brought him home. If nobody claimed him, she would keep him for good. So far, nobody has.

From Terrorizing the Block to a Couch Potato

The gray cat has been in his new home for a short time, but he’s adjusting quickly. As his possibly permanent parent explained, he eats, sleeps, and lets her pet him.

He might be vocal, but the yelling has shifted from “I’m looking for a fight” to “I’d like more treats.”

The plan for him is simple: vet first, neutering second, forever home third. The woman wrote, “If he’s not chipped, I plan on keeping him. He’s super handsome.”

That’s How the Cat Distribution System Works

People in the post quickly responded sharing jokes about the cat distribution system. One commenter encouraged the woman to see whether others could help his friend and the female cat.

Another joked he might be crying because he missed his troublemaking partner. Still, many agreed that once this handsome troublemaker gets neutered, he will become more comfortable indoors.

There was no careful adoption plan here. A woman saw a vocal gray cat running toward the right person at the right moment. Now he has a possible new home, and a chance to leave the street fights behind.

Plenty of dogs out there have mastered the art of howling, but very few are doing it quite like Milo the Golden Retriever is.

Here, we can see Milo and his “awoos” in action. It’s not entirely clear what he’s howling about from the video, but whatever it is, he certainly seems to feel passionately about it.

What a diva is right — the second Milo hears his mom laughing at his howling, he looks at her like he’s been betrayed in the deepest possible way.

What Do Different Dog Sounds Mean?

When we think about the different sounds dogs make, most of us are probably imaging the two big ones: barking and howling. But depending on the type of vocalization, their sounds all mean different things.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), there are a few types of dog sounds you should look out for:

• Barks — These can mean different things, depending on the pitch, body language, and behavior of your dog in the moment. If they seem to look defensive and are letting our loud, angry barks, they’re probably trying to protect their humans, but if they’re letting out excited, happy little yaps, they’re just glad to see you.
• Whining and crying — This sound means your dog really wants you to help them with something, whether it’s taking them out for a potty break or serving them food. In some circumstances, it may even indicate that they’re in pain.
• Howling — For some dogs, howling is just fun. For others, they’re howling to mark their territory, and sometimes, you may even catch them howling along with music that’s playing or even a siren.
• Growling — Growling can be both serious and playful, so check on your dog’s body language to determine which it is. If they’re growling out of anger, it’s time to take action, since this vocalization can sometimes escalate to biting.

Our dogs may not be able to speak human language, but if we can learn to understand their sounds, we’ll be able to communicate with them just fine.

Yams is a polydactyl cat whose front paws only added to her charming character—big, wide, mitten-like feet with extra toes that made her look like she was wearing gloves all the time.

For six years, those paws were her signature. Then, she started chewing her own claws into stubs, and her extra toes started changing the way she moved through the world.

The 6-year-old cat never had trouble with her extra toes before, but once pain became part of her life, her parents decided to do something. They found a cat orthopedist who determined that Yams was putting weight on the extra toes. A month after the surgery, Yams’ parents posted an update on Reddit’s r/ploydactyl.

The Warning Signs Are Easy to Miss

Yams’ parents noticed the chewing first. She was pulling on the claws of those extra toes and biting them into stubs, while leaving her other claws alone. Then, Yams’ posture began to change as she started putting weight on the malformed toes.

Those are the types of changes cat parents should pay attention to—even more if you have a polydactyl cat. Regular nail care and veterinary evaluation is a must.

Unfortunately for Yams, the cat orthopedist confirmed the worst, meaning Yams would have to go through with a surgical removal. In the Reddit post, her parents explained, “We loved her big paws, so it’s like we’re feeling the loss more than she is.”

Thankfully, Yams recovered relatively quickly, though day two brought some swelling in her right paw. Luckily, her parents treated it with massage and antibiotics. Her stitches came out after two weeks, and soon after, the incision was barely visible.

However, Yams’ biggest challenge was the cone. She hated wearing it, and sometimes urinated outside the litter box while adjusting to it.

Before the operation, Yams had a distinctive gait. She would swing her legs out to the side to avoid her extra thumbs touching the ground. After surgery, her owner noticed a real change: Yams now moves her legs straight back and forth instead of compensating sideways.

She also wants to play more than before, which is a clear sign the pain is gone. Her parent says she uses scratching surfaces normally and keeps trying to climb the hat rack, even though she’s still recovering.

Most Polydactyl Cats Do Just Fine

Yams’ situation isn’t typical for polydactyl felines. In fact, the genetic trait is quite common in cats and rarely causes problems.

Her parents also stress that the experience is unusual. There’s no reason for someone with a healthy, comfortable polydactyl cat to put her feline under surgery.

Most Redditors shared similar sentiments. “I feel like it’s important to add that most polydactyl cats live full lives without any major problems or pain so that people don’t panic,” said one commenter. “My girl has a perfectly normal gait, run, and jump. She’s never shown signs of pain.”

“My boy has one paw that has a weird toenail growing in between his pads and I have to constantly check it and trim it so it doesn’t become ingrown and cause major issues,” wrote another.

There are dogs who look like they know exactly what they’re doing at all times, and then there are dogs like mine. Mine is afraid of butterflies and has basically learned that screaming loudly enough when he doesn’t get a cookie is also a command. I’m pretty sure I have failed obedience school.

Then there’s Fear, a stunning Belgian Malinois who looks like he could organize my entire life, protect the house, and probably file my taxes before lunch. A video of this gorgeous dog shows off not only his incredible training but a pair of yellow-gold eyes that look like someone popped two glowing topaz gemstones right into his head.

The incredible clip was shared by the TikTok account @fearnoone.malinois, and Fear doesn’t need to do much to show how impressive he is.

He comes running toward his pet parent, immediately moves into position right beside them, and looks up.

That’s it.

No wandering around.

No “Hang on, I smelled a leaf.”

No pretending he suddenly forgot his own name.

Fear knows where he’s supposed to be, and the way he looks up waiting for his next cue is pretty amazing. But it’s those eyes that I cannot stop staring at. They’re such an unusual golden yellow that they practically glow against his darker face.

He looks like a very handsome wolf who has been entrusted with an important government secret.

Meanwhile, my dog is still waiting to see if screaming will produce cheese.

Belgian Malinois have a reputation for being exceptionally intelligent, driven, and trainable dogs, and they’ve earned it. The breed is frequently used in demanding working roles, including police and military work, where their athleticism, focus, and ability to learn are major assets.

But all that brainpower comes with a catch.

A Malinois isn’t simply a smart dog who will happily spend the rest of the afternoon snoozing on the couch because you taught them “sit” before breakfast. These dogs generally need plenty of physical exercise, training, and mental stimulation.

That can make them incredible partners for people who understand what they’re signing up for, but they’re not necessarily the right fit for every family.

Senior dogs in shelters often get overlooked for adoption and sometimes don’t even get proper medical care due to their age. Many older pooches can surpass their average life expectancy age and have a lot of life left to live if only given the attention and care they need.

The TikTok from @homeforhopelesspaws told Shelly’s story and how she came close to euthanasia due to her age.

“Over a year ago, Shelly and another dog were confiscated from a home and brought to the shelter,” the caption explained. “Shelly was sick and needed medical care, but because she was a senior, she wasn’t given the chance to overcome her condition. Instead of receiving the care she needed, it was decided that she would be euthanized. She was given just two weeks to make it out alive.”

Thankfully, the Florida rescue Home for Hopeless Paws intervened and gave Shelly the medical care she desperately required. The organization saw how priceless the precious pooch is and how much she has to offer.

“If Home for Hopeless Paws hadn’t stepped in, Shelly would not be here today,” the story continued. “She would have been overlooked simply because she was considered too old to save and too old to love.”

The Best Was Yet to Come for Shelly

But wait … there’s more! Thanks to the love, support, and generosity of the rescue, Shelly did well in her recovery and was placed on the adoption list. She didn’t receive any inquiries for three months, but then her life completely changed for the better.

“One of our volunteers fell in love with her and gave her the forever home she had been waiting for,” the caption shared as the video showed a party for Shelly’s 15th birthday, complete with party decorations and a cake to celebrate the canine cutie. “Today, Shelly is thriving. She spends her days spoiled, cherished, and making videos alongside her dog sisters. She’s sassy, has the cutest wonky toes, and is truly one of a kind.”

While others considered Shelly “too old and too sick to save”, this rescue gave her the love, respect, and dignity she deserved so she can now enjoy this wonderful new chapter of her life.

I have three cats, so I know how much chaos ONE cat wearing a cone can cause in a house. Now imagine three perfect little black voids all getting fixed on the same day and coming home wearing matching white cones. Nobody knows how wide they are anymore. Nobody can walk through a doorway. Nobody understands why their siblings have suddenly turned into lamps.

The matching lamps are funny, but getting cats spayed or neutered has some pretty important benefits. The ASPCA and American Veterinary Medical Association both recommend talking with your veterinarian about sterilization and the right timing for your cat.

There are five big reasons to consider it:

1. No surprise kittens. Spaying and neutering prevents unplanned litters, which also helps reduce the number of cats needing homes.
2. It can protect their health. Spaying prevents uterine infections and lowers the risk of mammary tumors, while neutering prevents testicular cancer.

Do Dogs Actually Pout, or Do We Just See It That Way?

It appears Wally knows how to pout when he’s sad, but experts say dogs aren’t capable of understanding complex emotions; however, they do learn over time how to read us and react accordingly.

Over time, dogs have evolved and now have specialized facial muscles that their wolf ancestors didn’t have. The muscles allow them to raise their eyebrows or give the classic puppy-eyes look, so it appears as if they’re sad.

As CNN explains, dogs learn that expressions can be communication tools through associative learning. When their humans look at them, they use more facial muscles because of our reaction. So, they continue doing it if they see how we feel about it.

The same happens when we’re upset over something they’ve done. They learn over time to look less threatening or submissive to appease us. As excellent readers of moods, it’s no surprise they observe and adjust their body language to interact or show they understand to some degree.

My sister has always had rescue German Shepherds, so I’ve spent enough time around them to know that underneath that majestic, highly intelligent, serious working dog exterior, there can also be a complete goober. They’re smart enough to learn complicated commands and apparently weird enough to stand in the kitchen eating air.

Axel is our latest example. The handsome German Shepherd is standing in front of the kitchen counter where a freshly cooked chicken or some sort of roast meat is still steaming, and rather than waiting to see if Mom might share, he starts biting at the air. Not the chicken. THE AIR. He’s apparently discovered that if you can’t have dinner yet, chicken-flavored atmosphere is an acceptable appetizer.

Plain, thoroughly cooked meats can be safe for many dogs in appropriate amounts. Some common options include:

1. Chicken
2. Turkey
3. Lean beef
4. Pork
5. Fully cooked fish with the bones removed

The important word here is plain.

The delicious chicken we prepare for ourselves can contain ingredients dogs don’t need and, in some cases, shouldn’t have. Garlic and onions, for example, are toxic to dogs. Rich sauces, lots of salt, heavy seasoning, and excessive fat aren’t good choices either.

Cooked bones are another no. They can splinter and cause choking or serious injuries to a dog’s digestive tract.

And while sharing an occasional piece of appropriate meat can be a nice treat, it shouldn’t replace a nutritionally complete dog food unless you’re working with a veterinarian on your dog’s diet.

I am always amazed by videos where someone is just going about their normal day while something absolutely INSANE is happening approximately six feet away from them. This senior man is casually walking down a sidewalk carrying a bag, minding his own business, and apparently has no idea that there is a huge black bear right behind him.

And I mean RIGHT behind him. The man reportedly walks past the bear without even noticing it, and then the black bear starts heading down the sidewalk behind him like the two of them are simply going in the same direction. Meanwhile, people across the street can see exactly what is happening and start trying to warn him.

As funny as the video looks once you know everyone made it out safely, a close encounter with a bear is obviously nothing to mess around with.

The National Park Service says that if you unexpectedly encounter a bear, the big thing is to stay calm and do not run. If the bear is aware of you, speaking calmly can help it recognize that you’re a person. You should avoid sudden movements and slowly increase the distance between you and the animal.

If a bear seems unaware that you’re there, guidance can differ depending on the situation and location, but generally you want to quietly leave the area and give the bear plenty of room rather than getting its attention. Bear safety recommendations can also vary depending on the species and where you are, so it’s smart to know the local guidance if you’re spending time in bear country.

As for me, I would like to think I would handle this calmly and sensibly.

But if I turned around on my afternoon walk and saw a bear five feet behind me, there is a VERY good chance every piece of bear safety information I have ever learned would immediately fall out of my head. If not friend, why friend shaped?

I don’t think I’ve ever met a puppy quite like Gösta. The adorable 15 week old black and white Cocker Spaniel has narcolepsy with cataplexy, which means sometimes when he’s out doing regular puppy things his body can suddenly give in and he collapses. And yes, watching it happen can look scary if you don’t know what’s going on.

But then you keep watching Gösta and you realize this little guy is also running through the woods, carrying sticks that are way too big for him, getting the zoomies, going shopping, playing with his brother and sitting in a rolling laundry basket to “help” his mom. Basically, he’s a Cocker Spaniel puppy doing all the usual puppy nonsense, he just happens to be sleepier than most.

I don’t know how much laundry he’s actually folding from inside the basket, but he is 15 weeks old. His resume is still pretty short.

Canine narcolepsy is a neurologic disorder involving sleep wake control. A dog can suddenly fall asleep or collapse during activity and then get back up again. Cataplexy involves a sudden loss of muscle tone, and excitement can sometimes trigger episodes.

These episodes can look frightening and can be confused with other medical problems, including seizures or fainting, which is one reason veterinary diagnosis is important.

And that’s exactly why Gösta’s family says they share the difficult moments, too. They want people to understand what canine narcolepsy and cataplexy can look like without letting those moments become the only thing people see when they look at him.

Both of my dogs have short-haired coats, so their fur never looks too rumpled or out of place. My Pug mix sheds like crazy, yet every hair on his body always looks perfectly groomed. His senior Dachshund sister has a silky coat that shines as if she spent hours doing a deep conditioner.

In the TikTok from @abbymillerdiaries, the precious pooch sat on the couch and looked around, though her eyes were hard to see due to the mop of black and white fur spilling over into her face.

The video doesn’t reveal whether the shaggy Shih-Tzu had just woken from a nap or was getting in some chill time, though she was sporting a wicked case of bedhead. The canine cutie’s hair on the top of her head literally stood on end in all directions. With all the fur fanning out coupled with the wavy black-and-white wavy mounds on her body, she radiated a certain “crumpled Oreo” vibe.

I have apparently been approaching dog walks all wrong because I thought the general requirements were dog, leash, poop bags and maybe a pocket full of treats. Nope. If you’re Golden Retriever Zebby, you’re also going to need your girlfriend present at all times, thank you very much, and if she falls even slightly behind we are shutting this entire operation DOWN.

7 Affectionate Cat Breeds That Love Human Company Sphynx Some cat breeds, like a Sphxn, are more affectionate than others.

A Sphynx may be just the companion cat you’re looking for! “Sphynx cats are often curious, outgoing and keen to be involved in whatever is happening at home,” Warner says. “Many enjoy following their people around, curling up on a lap or sleeping close by.” Plus, because these hairless cats have very little coats, they tend to love to have physical contact for warmth, Warner adds.

But these people-oriented cats don’t just like to be in your orbit for warmth, they like to be close to people because they excel in social situations. “Sphynx are one of the most outgoing cat breeds that I work with,” explains Kerry Tarr, DVM, Lovet Pet Health Care Veterinarian. “I find they commonly have dog-like behavior.” And like dogs, you’ll want to have plenty of mentally-stimulating toys around to keep them engaged when you’re busy. However, overall, they are as loyal and sweet as they come.

Just be prepared to dish out plenty of affection if you have one of these furbabies. “Burmese cats love people and are not afraid to demand attention,” Tarr reveals. “They enjoy playing games like fetch and are highly intelligent.”

Because this breed doesn’t like to be alone, Tarr recommends being open to getting more than one at some point.

Maine Coon These large cats are super social and affectionate.

What’s the best thing about having a Maine Coon? They are often compared to dogs, given their friendly nature and big size! “Maine Coons are a large, lovable, long-haired cat that have an outgoing, affectionate and dog-like personality,” says Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian contributor at Embrace Pet Insurance. “Like dogs, they frequently greet their owners at the door, enjoy following their humans around the house, and can often be leash-trained.”

This social cat breed is usually described as being a “gentle giant”as well seeing how they have a sweet temperament. “They make excellent family pets, as they are good with both adults and children,” Hunt points out. On top of that, Maine Coons don’t just love to be around humans—they also tend to be great with other pets you may have, according to Hunt. As a result, their happy, affectionate personality usually makes them a good fit for pretty much anyone looking for a companion.

After all, they are also known for being a bit of a cat-dog. “They are affectionate, sweet, calm cats that generally like to be close to their owners and are typically snuggly cats,” Hunt says. “They often have dog-like personalities, too, greeting owners at the door and following them through the house.”

In fact, Hunt calls this breed a “good family cats” noting that they usually do well with kids and other pets. So, if you want a cat that will form a tight bond with its owners, a Ragdoll will quickly win over your heart.

Persian Persian cats are gentle, kind and full of love.

Though, while some cats who love human company will be all over their pet parents, Persians are a little more coy about it.

“Many enjoy being near a familiar person and can be affectionate in a quiet, undemanding way,” Warner notes. All-in-all, these friendly feline’s gentle and affectionate nature is what makes people who have one fall in love with them.

Siamese  Siamese cats are playful and great companions.

You won’t have to wonder if your Siamese cat loves you or not, as these kitties are happiest around people. “Siamese cats often follow their owners from room to room,” Hunt says. “They like to be near their humans, but are not typically lap cats.” In fact, Hunt points out that this affectionate cat breed tends to love human company on their own terms, which sometimes can mean being near you and interacting with you, but not snuggling all the time.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t stop them from forming tight relationships with their humans. “They do like to be involved in whatever their human is working on,” Hunt shares.

With them by your side, you’ll always have a furry friend you can hang out with.

When it comes to cats, the Birman is far from being a loner. Vets often describe these cuddly cats as “sweet and affectionate” but they need that in return from their pet parents to thrive. “Birmans are quiet and gentle cats, which make them excellent family pets,” Hunt adds.

There are benefits to having siblings. You always have somebody to play with, somebody to blame when something gets broken and, apparently, somebody to send underneath the furniture when your body is simply not built for the job.

One enormous Black Lab learned this when his ball rolled underneath the TV stand. He tries his best to retrieve it, but there’s one fairly significant problem. He’s approximately the size of a small refrigerator and that gap is maybe Dachshund high. Luckily, he happens to keep one of those around.

Our little hero actually has the perfect body for this particular rescue mission.

Dachshunds were originally developed to hunt badgers, with their long bodies and short legs helping them get into underground burrows. Even their name gives away the job: “Dachs” refers to badger and “hund” to dog.

So while the Black Lab may have the height advantage when somebody leaves a sandwich unattended on the kitchen counter, the Dachshund owns the under furniture department.

It’s a beautiful partnership.

One dog handles anything above knee level.

The other takes all assignments requiring a clearance of approximately six inches.

And the next time that ball disappears underneath the TV stand?

Don’t worry.

The retriever’s retriever is on duty.

I think one of the best parts of moving somewhere new is discovering that the people you love can still show up in ways you never expect. Charlie, the Golden Retriever, moved from Montreal to Florida, and for a while, it probably felt like all his favorite people were suddenly very far away.

Then Mom took him to the beach.

Charlie is standing in the sand with the ocean behind him when she starts dropping hints. Someone is coming to see him. Someone he knows.

At first, Charlie just looks around.

Then Mom tells him to look the other way.

And there it is.

That tiny moment when his brain catches up with what his eyes are seeing is everything. Charlie gives the cutest little hop, then takes off down the beach at full Golden Retriever speed.

His destination is Margo, one of his favorite humans from back home.

I love dogs who collect people outside their immediate family and make them part of their own inner circle. There’s something so sweet about realizing your pup has friendships that belong entirely to them.

Charlie clearly has one with Margo.

Mom even comments on how far he runs to reach her, and honestly, I would have been emotional before he made it halfway.

One comment focused on the way Charlie runs with his leash, which somehow makes the whole sprint even cuter. Another simply admitted the reunion brought on tears.

Same.

After the big greeting, Charlie races back toward Mom carrying his leash in his mouth, looking ridiculously pleased with himself. It’s the body language of a pup who just had the greatest surprise of his Florida life.

He moved hundreds of miles away, landed somewhere completely new, and then one day his bestie appeared on the beach.

No wonder the zoomies kicked in.

This Golden Retriever puppy, though very special, isn’t that unique, as many Goldens sport beautiful and long, golden eyelashes.

Many Goldens are the envy of their parents, who have to use makeup to get that effect.

But what other dog breeds have long eyelashes?

Poodles, such as purebred standards as well as toy and miniature ones, have naturally long eyelashes.

Due to their Poodle genes, many Doodle breeds, including Australian Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Cavapoos, Cockapoos, Newfypoos, and Bernedoodles, are known for their long eyelashes.

Cocker Spaniels also have very long and pretty eyelashes.

Remember Lady the Cocker Spaniel’s eyelashes in Lady & the Tramp? They were so long and beautiful!

The animators drew her eyelashes like this in the 1955 film to make her appear more human-like, but it was actually accurate to Lady’s breed.

Even as a puppy, they gave her long eyelashes, as you can see in this clip from the film.

The Dream Kittens, including Mr. Purebred Saber-Toothed Tiger, are at the Arizona Humane Society. They’re currently accepting applications, as always, but these kittens will need another few weeks before they make their way into their forever homes. Saber-tooth, who doesn’t have a name yet, is missing an eye!

They haven’t posted much about his backstory, but clearly, he got to the shelter in rough shape. He’ll be completely fine, though: you can take away his eye, but you can’t take away his sparkle! If you’re looking for other cool “purebred” kittens, they also have dryer lint and a Pixar lampshade.

It may be silly, but something like this could legitimately make all of the difference between a kitten being adopted and them getting passed over time and time again. I would definitely take a second look at him!

I don’t know about you, but this kitten being sold to me as a saber-toothed tiger look-alike definitely caught my attention. Immediately, I wanted to know if his name was Diego, like from Ice Age, and if not, I wanted to adopt him just to name him that.

Helping a pet stand out amongst the crowd when they’re in the shelter is, luckily, pretty easy. Sometimes, the animal will do it for you. Even if they’re “basic,” though, you can still turn them into a star by:

• Giving them a silly, memorable name.
• Heavily advertising a quirk that they already have.
• Taking unique, high-quality intake photos.
• Posting them on social media.

You never know which pets are going to go viral. Anything is better than nothing, especially when it comes to their photos! More often than not, those are someone’s first impressions of the pet, and it can make or break them finding a home.
