Vet Said No More Fatty Foods—This Fluffy Golden Retriever Respectfully Declines

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 11:40am

The vet said it clearly. No more fatty foods. The patient heard the advice, considered it carefully and issued a formal response. He respectfully declines.

The TikTok from @echogoldenbear captures the whole situation in one text overlay: "My doctor told me not to eat anything fatty. I said what do you mean? Like potato chips or something? "No," he said, "don't eat anything FATTY."

Meet Echo. He's a golden retriever. He's the 'fatty' in question. And he has thoughts about this diagnosis that he will not be sharing at this time.

His caption says everything: "I respectfully decline."

@echogoldenbear

I respectfully decline #dogsoftiktok #goldenretriever #funnyvideos #2026 #fyp

♬ original sound - Technodaddy

The comments showed up fast and fully prepared to defend him:

"He ain't fatty, he's fluffy!"

"He's not fat, he's festively plump!"

"He's just big boned"

"He's not fat. He's just a little husky"

"He's pleasantly plump ❤️"

"Only 47 pounds he's a purse dog"

"The most adorable chonky ever!"

Six different ways of saying the exact same thing. The vet is wrong. Echo is perfect. The conversation is over.

The internet has ruled. Echo has declined. The matter is absolutely closed.

Except the vet might actually have a point.

What's Actually a Healthy Weight for a Golden Retriever—and How to Get There

Here is some information Echo did not ask for.

According to Pawlicy Advisor, a fully grown male golden should weigh somewhere between 65 and 75 pounds by the official breed standards. Females weigh in a little lighter at 55 to 65 pounds. Most golden retrievers hit their full adult weight around age two.

Here is the part that explains a lot though. Pawlicy Advisor points out that goldens are more likely to pack on extra weight than a lot of other breeds and that "their long coats can easily disguise weight gain." The fur is absolutely hiding things. The vet saw right through it.

Related: Shih-Tzu Treated To Most Extra Texas Roadhouse Birthday—He Only Had Eyes for the Steak

Healthcare for Pets Hospital backs this up. Extra weight in golden retrievers is a real health concern, not just a cosmetic one. It can cause or make joint problems, back pain and heart disease worse. For a dog who is built to run, swim and fetch all day, carrying extra weight actually matters quite a bit.

The good news is that a solid diet and regular exercise make a big difference for goldens. One of the easiest ways to keep tabs on their weight is just running your hands along their sides when you pet them. The coat tends to hide what the scale would actually show, so a hands-on check tells you a lot more than a quick glance.

For the record, one commenter clocks Echo at 47 kilograms which roughly translates into 103.6 pounds. Echo really is a big boy. Official male golden standards sit between 65 and 75 pounds. His coat may be doing more convincing than his actual weight and the vet may have been fully deceived by the fluff.

Echo has been trying to tell everyone this all along.

He respectfully declines and has nothing further to add.

Abandoned Blind Dog Finally Feels Safe, and the Friends He's Making Have Us Melting

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 10:10am

Dogs living on the street have numerous frightening challenges they face on a daily basis. Food scarcity, extreme weather and health problems are just a few obstacles these canines have to deal with on their own. These issues are even scarier for senior dogs with physical impairments.

Iago is a senior blind dog who was abandoned and fending for himself until Old Souls Animal Rescue stepped in to give him the love and support he needed.

@oldsoulsanimalres

This blind dog was in emergency ICU care at the shelter just a few weeks ago. Today, Iago is safe at Old Souls Animal Rescue, where he’s learning that the world isn’t quite so scary when you have gentle voices and helping hands around you, a soft place to rest, and friends by your side. Every day he grows a little more confident, a little more comfortable, and a little more trusting. He may not be able to see the world, but we hope he can now feel the love in it ❤️ If Iago’s story touched your heart, please like, comment, share, and repost this video. The TikTok from @oldsoulsanimalres told Iago's story and the trauma he suffered while he was homeless.

"A few weeks ago, he was hit by a car and in emergency ICU at the shelter," the on-screen text explained, as Iago sweetly stared into the camera.

The precious pooch was a bit overwhelmed when he first arrived at Old Souls after his ICU stay, yet he sought out comfort from staff members and other fur babies.

"He’s learning that the world isn’t quite so scary when you have gentle voices and helping hands around you, a soft place to rest, and friends by your side," the caption read. "Every day he grows a little more confident, a little more comfortable, and a little more trusting."

Iago Got a Warm Welcome

Several clips featured Iago exploring the rescue and finding new ways to get around as calm voices gave him guidance. The canine cutie was also surrounded by other four-legged friends (including a "chaotic kitten") who immediately made him feel at home. Iago is surrounded by the love and affection he deserves and getting a second chance at happiness.

"He may not be able to see the world, but we hope he can now feel the love in it," the on-screen text concluded, adding, "Welcome home, Iago."

Rare Sealyham Terrier Puppy's Adorable Look Is Winning Hearts Everywhere

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 9:20am

You may have thought you had seen most dog breeds, but there's a good chance you haven't seen this rare dog type, especially as a puppy.

Meet the Sealyham Terrier in all her puppy glory!

This rare breed is a sight to behold, and viewers can't get enough of her.

Look at those little black spots on Rosie's ears! Her distinctive appearance is too adorable for words!

And clearly, viewers agreed, as most didn't even have words to describe her sweet, fluffy puppy looks.

One wrote, "Oh my gosh," and another wrote, "Oh my goodness."

Related: The Ultimate List of Terriers—31 Terrific Terrier Breeds to Love

Why Are Sealyham Terriers So Rare?

So why are Sealyham Terriers considered so rare that they actually almost went extinct?

This special breed has a very interesting history.

Unlike many newer rare dog breeds, these dogs have been recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) since 1911!

They were originally bred in Wales by John Tucker-Edwardes of Pembrokeshire.

Sealyham Terriers are most likely a hybrid of the Wire Fox Terrier, the West Highland White Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and the now-extinct English White Terrier.

The dog breed actually became quite popular after World War I and was a favorite among the Hollywood elite.

Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, writer Agatha Christie, and Alfred Hitchcock were all Sealyham Terrier parents.

Hitchcock loved his two Sealyham Terriers so much that he had them make a cameo in his iconic film The Birds, along with him. Frankly, that film could have used more sweet dogs!

One of Hitchcock's Sealyhams also appeared in his film Suspicion.

According to AKC, they are also show-dog champions, winning four Best in Show titles at Westminster as well as one at Crufts and most recently at the 2023 AKC National Dog Show.

That's why it's so shocking that they were considered one of the most endangered dog breeds in the early aughts.

As recently as 2011, only 49 Sealyham Terrier puppies were registered with the AKC, which placed them firmly on the endangered breed list.

It's hard to find official numbers for these dogs, but as of 2016, there were only 500 registered in the U.S.

That's why it's so great to see little Rosie, a happy Sealyham Terrier puppy, living her best life!

Chihuahua’s One ‘Miracle Puppy’ Means the World to Her

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 9:00am

Having one puppy is pretty rare: even a lot of beginner litters start with two. While there's nothing wrong with having just one, it greatly increases the likelihood of you ending up keeping both of them together forever.

For one Chihuahua's family, that looks like exactly what's about to happen. She recently gave birth to just one sweet little puppy, and their relationship proves she thinks her baby was a total miracle:

@megancm24

#fyp

♬ original sound - MeganCampion

Megan Campion's Chihuahua had her miracle puppy with the family's other Chihuahua, Cooper. Not to worry, she'll be getting spayed as soon as it's safe to do so, but they're definitely keeping the puppy. It's a boy!

Mama's name is Minnie, and they named the puppy Reggie. They all live in Dublin, Ireland, and luckily, they're a very happy family! Reggie was a happy accident, and her mom made sure she had the safest and healthiest pregnancy possible. Now, Reggie is having a ton of fun!

Related: Fluffy Saint Bernard Puppies Look Like Real-Life Snoopys

There's one main thing I love about Chihuahuas: their huge ears. Chihuahuas get a bad wrap for being aggressive "ankle-biters," but the truth is, they're total sweeties! Reggie in particular is already a very handsome boy:

@megancm24

🤣 #fyp #foryoupage #bigdog #chihuahua #pup

♬ original sound - Jaxie Da Shih Tzu 🐾

His ears are bigger than his head! That's exactly what I want to see when it comes to a Chihuahua. It just doesn't get cuter than a little puppy with big ears.

Are Singleton Puppies Common for Chihuahuas?

Chihuahuas are small dogs, and small dogs usually have smaller litters than larger ones. There's only so much space for those babies to grow!

Chihuahuas usually have anywhere from 1-3 puppies per litter, though 2 is about average. Single puppies can and do happen for Chihuahuas, especially if:

  • They're a smaller dog.
  • This is their first time being pregnant.
  • They're younger.

Singleton puppies have their own problems: since they don't have siblings, they may not grow up to be as social as other puppies. Making sure they have opportunities to socialize with other dogs will be extra important for them. Luckily, Reggie will stay with his parents forever!

Maine Coon Cat Gives Birth to a Litter of Tiny Storm Clouds

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 8:00am

When kittens are born, you never really know what you're going to get. Though the colors of their parents definitely provide some clues, there might be one who surprises you, and the division of colors is never the same twice.

Recently, one Maine Coon cat gave birth to a litter of kittens that ended up looking like a litter of perfect little storm clouds in varying shades of grey. Put them in front of a blue bakcground and you'd never be able to tell they weren't just part of a rainy spring day:

@blackdiamondmainecoons

♬ Glamorous - Fergie

Black Diamond Maine Coons has some of the most impressive cats ever, and though they're not all dark like this cat and (most of) her kittens, most of them are a little smoky. This bunch just happens to have a lot of that going on!

There are 9 kittens in this litter, which is super impressive: though Maine Coon litters are typically larger than other cats', nine kittens is still a ton! My favorite was the 5th one she showed: I love the little white eyebrows. That little kitten is going to look surprised forever!

Related: Grey Maine Coon Gives Birth to a Rainbow of Tiny Kittens—and Each Is Cuter Than the Last

Although the kittens are the sweetest babies ever, the woman who runs the cattery maintains that their parents were her babies first. She made sure to treat this mama very, very well before she went into labor:

@blackdiamondmainecoons

I’m for grateful to be able to love these babies from day 1 mainecoons #cats #catsoftiktok #kittens #mainecoonsoftiktok

♬ Raindance - Dave & Tems

This cat was once one of those kittens, after all! She won't ever let them think they mean less to her just because there are newer kittens. That's exactly what a good cat mom should be doing!

Why Do Kittens In a Litter Get Lighter?

There's a common phenomenon we see when cats have kittens that we like to call "running out of ink." For many litters, the kittens tend to get increasingly lighter! It doesn't happen every time, though.

Ekaterina Zolotykh / Getty Images

Cats in a litter can technically have multiple fathers, which can lead to some more extreme variations in litter coloring. In controlled breeding environments like this one, though, there's only one dad, which means any variation is random.

Kittens inherit 50% of their DNA from each parent, but when it comes to coat color, it's almost completely random. That's why some look more like Mom, some look like Dad, and some are perfectly in-between!

Sweet Dog Winds Up in Shelter for 'Being Too Affectionate' — He Just Wants Someone to Love Him

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 7:10am

Most people adopt a dog for companionship and that unconditional love canines offer. Every breed has their own special attributes that sets them apart, yet the majority of dogs all have the same loving spirit that brings joy to all they meet.

Surprisingly, Panda the Pit Bull mix landed in a shelter because he was considered to be "too affectionate" and now he's hoping for another chance at happiness.

@peggyadamsarl

SO CUTE 🥰 Panda landed in the shelter because he was too affectionate 💔 So let's get it all out in the open: Panda might stare at you lovingly. But if you like to form a deep bond with your best friend, cuddle on the couch, and know that a wagging tail will greet you every time you come home, you and Panda will get along just fine. In the TikTok from @peggyadamsarl, Panda was in his kennel and stared into the camera with his sweet eyes. The post explained why he was brought to the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

"Panda landed in the shelter because he was too affectionate," the caption shared, adding details on how the precious pooch shows unconditional love.

"Panda might stare at you lovingly," the story continued. "He might want to lay on your lap and snore while you watch TV. He might want to kiss you goodnight and sleep in your bed."

While most potential pet parents would jump at the chance to have a dog who gives so much love, others may need more space. Still, for those who want a fur baby BFF, Panda would be an ideal choice.

"If you like to form a deep bond with your best friend, cuddle on the couch, and know that a wagging tail will greet you every time you come home, you and Panda will get along just fine," the caption read, noting that the canine cutie loves meeting new people and does well at home alone.

How Is Panda Today?

Thanks to Panda's story being shared, the cuddly canine was adopted and is now enjoying his forever family. A picture shared in the comments on the original post featured Panda already getting cozy in his new home.

The #1 Mistake Dog Owners Make During Summer Walks, According to Vets

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 6:44am

Walking your dog is an essential part of their care. It’s honestly a non-negotiable. After all, not only are walks a key way for your pup to get their steps in and burn off any excess energy, but walks also help them maintain a healthy weight and get some mental stimulation too. From the sniffs to the sights, walks are often easily a favorite part of your doggie’s day.

However, during the summer, there are more risks when it comes to your daily stroll. With hotter weather and a higher ultraviolet (UV) index, walks can quickly become dangerous for your dog if you aren’t mindful. Luckily, there are some simple strategies for keeping your walk safe during the hotter summer months.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

To learn more about summertime walk safety for dogs, we spoke with Dr. Jordyn Zoul, a Georgia-based veterinarian at Seaside Veterinary Hospital on St. Simons Island and a vet advisor to pet nutrition and wellness company Spot & Tango. Here are the best ways to keep summertime walks safe for your dog, including the No. 1 mistake to avoid, what to pack your dog for their summer walks, the science of hot asphalt, signs of heatstroke in dogs and more.

The Dangerous Summer Habit You Need to Stop

Sandra Seitamaa / Unsplash

If you're a pup parent, the dangerous summer habit you need to stop ASAP is walking when it's too hot outside or when the UV index is too high.

"The most common mistake people make walking in the summer with their dogs is walking in weather that is too hot or sun that is too strong," Dr. Zoul says. "Check the weather app for a UV index check, and try to walk when it is under 5."

The Pavement Problem: Why Your Midday Stroll Is a Mistake

Egor Myznik / Unsplash

A midday walk sounds great in theory, but during the summertime it can be dangerous for your pup.

"Another mistake owners make is letting their dog walk on hot pavement. Again, pavement temperatures will be highest during the hottest parts of the day, so the best thing you can do is walk in cooler temperatures," Dr. Zoul says.

Why Vets Beg You to Skip the Afternoon Walk

Sydney Moore / Unsplash

The afternoon is when temperatures tend to be the highest, which means the pavement is super hot during this time as well. This is why vets are begging you to skip the afternoon walk and reschedule your walks for other times of day.

Dr. Zoul says the best times of day to walk your dog during the summer are early morning when the sun hasn’t fully risen and the air isn’t too hot yet and late evening.

The Science of Hot Asphalt: What Happens to Paw Pads

Sheldon Kennedy / Unsplash

"Even if it doesn’t seem that hot out (75, 80 degrees), a strong sun can get asphalt temperatures up past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to cause a burn to your dog’s paw pads," Dr. Zoul says. "Within just a few minutes, your dog’s paws can blister and become painful with first- or second-degree burns."

She says that if you absolutely cannot avoid hot pavement or sidewalks, you should get your dog walking booties and try walking on grass or dirt to help decrease the odds of hurt, burnt paws.

Why Dogs Process Heat Differently Than Humans

Rafael Shiga / Unsplash

As it turns out, dogs process heat differently than we humans do, which is why you need to take special considerations for your four-legged BFF when it comes to summertime strolls. "Dogs can sweat, but not in the way that we do," Dr. Zoul says. "Their sweat glands work differently and rarely help with heat distribution. Rather, they help with scent. Their primary method of cooling off is panting via evaporation."

Combine this with the fact that dogs also have fur and other bodily mechanisms that contribute to higher temperature retention, and your dog definitely will get hotter faster than you do.

"They also undergo vasodilation, especially in their feet, when their blood vessels dilate and bring warm blood closer to the surface to be passed off into the environment and off the dog," Dr. Zoul says. "This can cause the paws to hold onto even more heat if they don’t have a cooler surface to pass the heat off to. Don’t forget they also have fur (some have thicker coats than others), and this can certainly trap heat in extreme temperatures."

Related: 7 Signs Your Senior Pet Is Still Full of Life (Even If They’re Slowing Down)

The Early Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs

Courtney Mihaka / Unsplash

"Heatstroke in dogs is a severe, sometimes life-threatening emergency, and it of course happens more in the summertime," Dr. Zoul says.

Signs of heatstroke in your dog to look out for may include:

  • Heavy panting
  • Lethargy
  • Dark pink to red gums
  • Thick drool
  • Seeming hot to the touch
How to Safely Schedule Your Dog's Summer Walks

Andriyko Podilnyk/Unsplash

Before you worry, there are still ways to take walks during the summer and keep your dog safe. One of the best methods is to schedule your doggo's walks during the cooler parts of the day.

"The best time to walk your dog in the summer is when it's the coolest out. This usually looks like early mornings and late evenings," Dr. Zoul says. "This is especially important for brachycephalic (flat- or squish-faced dog) breeds like bulldogs, Boston terriers, etc. Dogs who are overweight or have underlying respiratory conditions should also be prioritized for walking in the coolest weather."

Small adjustments to your daily schedule can help make safer walks possible. "Consider waking up 30 minutes earlier to fit a walk in before work, or having dinner earlier so you have time for an after-dinner walk," Dr. Zoul says.

Other considerations for scheduling your dog's walks include trying new routes that have more shade so you can take shelter from the hot sun as needed.

What to Pack for Your Pup

Robin Teng / Unsplash

The most important thing to remember to pack for your dog on your summertime walks is water. "If you're going on a long walk in the summer, regardless of the time of day, bring a portable water bowl and water supply. You can find plenty of options for these online. Most are lightweight, making them easy to carry with you on your walk," Dr. Zoul says.

In addition to water and a bowl, you can bring other items that help keep your dog more comfortable in the summer heat, such as a portable fan, a stroller with a hood if you have a smaller dog or even a pet cooling mat.

Indoor Alternatives to Burn Energy on Scorching Days

Vitaly Gariev / Unsplash

The best option for burning energy indoors on hot days? Some good old-fashioned playtime!

"Inside play can be a great alternative for keeping activity levels up during the hot summer days. Consider getting some new toys to inspire interest in playing. Tug of war inside, if you have a large space, or even small, short bursts of fetch can be great," Dr. Zoul says. "If you're lucky enough to have access to a pool at your house, this is a great option for exercise, still keeping in mind that if your pool is in the sun, your dog is still at risk for heatstroke as they're exerting themselves swimming."

Keeping these important tips in mind, you can have a safe, fun and active summer with your furry best friend. Happy walking!

British Shorthairs are also famous for their plush coats, round faces and teddy bear appearance, which helps explain why so many people instantly fall in love with them.

7 'Innocent' Everyday Habits That Secretly Stress Your Cat Out, Say Vets

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 5:48am

Having a pet in the home is one of life's most rewarding experiences, but it comes with its share of challenges. Being a pet parent can feel equal parts joyful and chaotic, and while we tend to focus on our own stress, it's easy to overlook the fact that our pets are navigating stressors of their very own.

Although cats have a reputation for being cool, aloof and unbothered, they are actually quite sensitive creatures. Cats can and do experience stress, which is often triggered by the everyday habits of the humans they live with. Unlike dogs, cats rarely make their discomfort obvious. Instead, they tend to internalize tension and express it in quieter, easily missed ways.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Environmental changes, disruptions to routine, loud noises and even well-meaning interactions can take a real toll on a cat's emotional and mental well-being. Over time, chronic stress in cats may lead to more serious health issues, making it all the more important for pet parents to be aware of the habits that may be affecting their feline companions.

The good news? Most of these stressors are easily fixable. By understanding what quietly stresses cats out, pet parents can make small but meaningful changes that improve their cat's quality of life and deepen the bond they share with their furry family member along the way. Read on to learn more about cat behavior, how certain human habits may stress them out and what you can do to help your cat stay as stress-free as possible.

Why Your Cat's Environment Dictates Their Mood

傅甬 华 / Unsplash

Cats are creatures of habit who thrive on routine and a strong sense of control over their surroundings. When something in their environment shifts, even something that seems minor to us, it can deeply affect the way a cat moves through their day.

According to Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and director of Ferndale Kennels and Travel Pet Relocation Services, "In most cases, environmental disruption is a major trigger. Cats like a stable routine. A new pet in the household, a move to the positioning or materials in the cat litter, or a change to who is staying in the house could all be enough to cause anxiety for the cat."

When we change the environment a cat has grown to know and love, we're altering their sense of control over their space. Much like a person starting a new job or navigating an unfamiliar school, cats experience that same disorientation and will always prefer the world they already know.

How We Accidentally Stress Our Cats Out

Adam Stefanca/Unsplash

No cat parent means to stress out their feline friends, but even some of our most well-intentioned habits may do exactly that.

"Cat anxiety is not a 'behavior problem,' but it's a mismatch between a cat's evolutionary wiring and the modern human home," Dr. Murdoch says. "Humans want a tidy, minimalistic aesthetic. Cats prefer a messier environment with lots of things scattered around that they can hide behind."

Once a cat has learned their way around a home, even small changes to their everyday routine can become a real source of tension. That's why it's worth paying attention to the signs that your cat may be feeling overwhelmed.

Habits That Stress Your Cat Out

Eric Han/Unsplash

Even the habits you never would’ve thought of could be the exact reason why your cat is stressed.

“Some of the most common sources of stress are things owners don’t think twice about,” Dr. Nathaniel Rakestraw, a veterinarian at TelaVets.com, says.

Dr. Rakestraw says the following common household changes may actually stress cats out and disrupt their sense of security:

  • Rearranging furniture
  • Moving the litter box
  • Introducing a new pet
  • Having overnight guests
  • Loud home renovations
  • Changes in work schedules
  • Switching litter brands

"Cats are creatures of habit, and sudden changes to their routine can be surprisingly unsettling,” Dr. Rakestraw says.

When humans disrupt the order in which a cat has grown accustomed to, it interferes with the cat’s ability to remain in control over its space. “Cats feel safest when they can choose where to rest, hide, climb, observe and retreat," Dr. Rakestraw says. "Homes that lack vertical space, quiet resting areas or escape routes can leave cats feeling vulnerable, particularly in multi-pet households.”

The Subtle Signs Your Cat Is Feeling Overwhelmed

Mikhail Vasilyev/Unsplash

Not sure whether these habits are affecting your cat? There are a few telltale signs experts say to watch for.

Dr. Rakestraw suggests looking out for increased hiding, changes in appetite, excessive grooming, hair loss from overgrooming, lack of interest in playtime, changes in sleeping, avoiding the litter box and becoming less social as signs that your cat might not be feeling well. They may also start becoming even more clingy or isolate entirely from the family.

It's also worth noting that these changes rarely happen overnight. Stress in cats tends to build gradually over time, which is why the signs can be so easy to miss until they've already taken hold.

Although it might seem daunting to know that your cat feels stressed in their home, there are plenty of simple swaps that may be beneficial for cats.

“Providing multiple litter boxes, creating elevated resting spaces, offering hiding areas, maintaining consistent feeding routines, and allowing cats opportunities for play and mental enrichment can make a significant difference,” Dr. Rakestraw says. “In multi-cat homes, ensuring that resources are distributed throughout the house can help reduce tension and competition.”

A stressed cat doesn't mean a broken bond; it simply means your feline friend needs a little extra reassurance and a few thoughtful adjustments to feel safe and settled again. Recognizing the signs your cat is stressed, knowing what common household things may be stressing them and making small changes to your home can go a long way toward giving your cat the stable, secure environment they need to truly thrive.

If Your Dog Sleeps Like This, It’s a Sign They Feel Safe

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 5:10am

After a long day of playtime with your dog, it’s always rewarding to see them finally settle in and drift off to sleep. But before you turn in for the night, you might want to take a closer look at how your furry companion is sleeping. After all, your dog’s sleep position can reveal more about how they feel in their environment—and even how secure they feel with you.

In fact, their small daily routines and interactions with you can quietly shape the way your pup relaxes when it’s time to rest. “The little things matter because dogs are constantly forming associations based on everyday experiences,” says Alexandra Bassett, lead dog trainer at Dog Savvy.

Over time, those experiences influence not just how easily a dog falls asleep, but how they position themselves once they do. Most sleep positions are completely normal, but there’s one in particular dogs tend to reserve for moments when they feel completely unguarded. And if you see it, it may be one of the clearest signs your dog feels safe with you.

If you notice yours doing this, rest assured that your dog trusts you completely. Here’s what trainers recommend looking out for. Once you notice it, you'll be able to tell how your pup feels and how tight your human-dog bond is as well.

Sleeping on their back with their belly fully exposed is one of the clearest indicators of trust in a dog.

“The most direct way to all a dog’s most important soft and squishy parts is through that exposed tummy, so feeling comfortable sleeping that way in your presence is essentially a vote of confidence,” reveals Amanda Farah, CPDT-K, national training and behavior coordinator at Best Friends Animal Society. “They’ve assessed you and the environment, decided there's no threat, and feel secure enough to be completely defenseless.”

Farah calls this position “the canine equivalent of leaving the front door unlocked.”

Why Dogs Only Sleep This Way Around Certain People

You won’t see dogs sleeping like this in every environment—or around every person.

“In a kennel environment, when we see dogs sleeping tummy-up, someone usually takes a photo,” says Farah. “That’s because it’s so rare to see a dog in that position when they’re feeling stressed or afraid, so it’s proof that something is going right for that dog.”

In other words, this posture tends to appear when a dog feels comfortable enough to fully let their guard down.

What Owners Often Misread About This Sleep Behavior

A belly-up sleeping position can look unusual, which leads some owners to assume it always means something negative or that the dog is in a vulnerable or unstable state.

In reality, the position often looks more extreme than it actually is. While it does involve exposure, it does not automatically signal stress or concern. Instead, it is most commonly seen when a dog feels relaxed in their environment and doesn’t feel the need to stay guarded while resting.

Context still matters, but this posture is generally associated with ease and familiarity at home. It's baically a sign of a happy dog.

What Your Dog’s Sleeping Posture Says About Comfort and Energy

How can you know if your dog feels safe at home? Well, different sleeping positions can reveal more about a dog’s physical comfort than most owners realize.

“A dog that sleeps curled tightly into a ball is conserving body heat and protecting their most vulnerable parts,” explains Farah.

This curled posture helps dogs stay warm and physically supported while they rest, especially in cooler or unfamiliar environments.

However, when dogs stretch out or sleep in more open positions, it often reflects physical ease and temperature regulation as a sprawled out sleeping positions are often linked to relaxation and physical comfort. "This sleeping positon means they're letting go of that tight, protective posture because their body doesn’t need to conserve heat or stay guarded,” Farah points out.

How Dogs Choose Their “Safe Spot” for Sleep

A dog’s chosen sleeping spot is rarely random, it’s based on comfort, familiarity, and awareness of their surroundings. These can include familiar scents, preferred temperatures, soft surfaces, or positions that offer awareness of the room, such as a wall behind them or a clear view of an entrance, Farah explains.

“The deciding factor is almost always proximity to their favorite person, though,” she says. “Many dogs will choose a little physical discomfort to be close to their person.”

In many cases, that closeness matters more than anything else.

What Trainers Want Owners to Understand About Dog Sleep Habits

Consistency plays an important role in a dog’s overall well-being, according to Farah.

“Sleep hygiene is important,” she says. “Predictable sleep routines reduce anxiety, and dogs who sleep better are healthier and more relaxed.”

When it comes to where a dog sleeps, Farah notes it’s ultimately a personal choice for each household. “Research does not support the old belief that allowing dogs to sleep in your bed creates behavior issues,” she adds.

Overall, the key is ensuring dogs can settle comfortably and independently when needed. And when that comfort shows up as a belly-up nap, it often reflects a dog who feels completely at ease.

Sweet Cat Decides a Chipmunk Is Her New Baby—and They Almost Look Like Twins

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 8:00pm

When we think of cats with chipmunks (or with any outdoor critters, really), we usually don't think of it ending well. That's why a lot of cats aren't allowed outside: letting a cat outside unsupervised can be bad for the natural ecosystem.

However, one cat is determined to break that stereotype. She recently saw a chipmunk who definitely needed some help. Luckily, she wasn't willing to leave him behind, and she took him in without a moment's hesitation. Honestly, they kind of look alike:

@fayrasmussen

I mean they are the same colors I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ #cat #chipmunk cute animal

♬ original sound - Fay-Lynn Rasmussen

Fay-Lynn lucked out having a cat who was so willing to take in an animal she'd never seen before. A lot of cats wouldn't be so kind! How this chipmunk came to be in the kitty's care is unclear, but one thing is clear as can be: she really loves him.

You can hardly see him when they're snuggled up at first! He blends right in with her tail, which just feels like even more proof that they were meant to be together. There is also a dog in the house, but he's probably not super interested in playing dad to a chipmunk.

Related: Orange Cat Raises Baby Raccoon With Her Kittens—and He Fits Right In

Whether this family is going to keep the chipmunk forever isn't clear yet, but for now, he's getting all the love he needs. The humans are making sure he's well fed, and the cat is making sure he's well snuggled. That's a perfect combo:

@fayrasmussen

Don't worry: they're never alone together unsupervised, just to be safe. When they can't be together, the chipmunk is tucked away in a cat-proof place. They just get some supervised snuggle time every day!

What Drives a Cat's Maternal Instincts?

Mama cats love their babies fiercely. They would do anything to protect them, even if it meant risking their own lives. When they have babies, even their favorite humans will have a hard time getting near them!

Marina Demidiuk / Getty Images

A cat's maternal instincts are biological and hormonal. Kittens are born completely helpless, and their mothers know they need to move them to a safe place and feed them in order to keep them alive. However, cats will often "team up" and take care of kittens who aren't even theirs.

A cat may be inclined to raise a baby who isn't hers, even if they're not the same species, if:

  • The baby is very young.
  • It's obviously in need of her help.
  • Not necessary, but if she's just had a litter of kittens, she's more likely to accept another baby.

A young, vulnerable animal, kitten or not, can trigger a cat's protective and maternal instincts. You still need to be responsible about it, but there's no harm in (carefully) trying!

Inquisitive Pit Bull’s Tree Investigation Goes Sideways in the Most Hilarious Way

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 7:20pm

If you’ve ever known and loved a Pit Bull, you’re probably well aware that they’re loyal, affectionate, and often unintentionally hilarious.

While the breed sometimes gets a bad reputation because of irresponsible humans, well-loved Pit Bulls have a way of winning people over with their goofy personalities. That’s certainly the case with Lucy, an adorable blue-eyed Pittie who recently reminded everyone that grace isn’t always her strongest quality.

While investigating a hollow tree trunk, Lucy lost her footing and took one of the funniest tumbles you’ll see all day. Don’t worry, she wasn’t hurt and seemed completely unfazed by the whole thing. In fact, she handled the unexpected slide better than most of us would.

Check out her moves in this May 27 Instagram from @lucy_the_pitty_:

View this post on Instagram

This may be one of the most graceful falls I’ve ever witnessed. One moment Lucy was calmly sniffing around the tree, and the next she was sliding down the trunk, flipping over a root, and popping back up as if nothing had happened.

The slow-motion replay somehow makes the whole thing even funnier because it highlights just how relaxed she remained throughout the ordeal. There wasn’t a hint of panic. Lucy simply accepted her fate and rolled with it.

Her fans completely understood the moment.

Viewer @iamkitmaine pointed out, “Love how Bullies do nothing to stop themselves from falling. They just accept it.”

That’s a pretty accurate description.

Meanwhile, @drax_to_the_max joked, “10/10 Gracefulness (falling with style).”

Fair assessment.

And @iamsarahbean shared, “Why are they so uncoordinated?? Mine trips over stuff that isn’t there.”

As a rescue Pit Bull mix mom, I can confirm that clumsiness is often part of the package. While many Pit Bulls are incredibly athletic, they’re also known for their goofy enthusiasm, which occasionally leads to moments like Lucy’s stumble.

Lucy bounced right back from her tree-trunk tumble, and it turns out goofy moments are pretty common for this lovable girl. Just take a look at this belly-crawl compilation her family shared on June 1:

Whether it’s zoomies gone awry, a sliding sploot, or an unexpected tree-trunk tumble, dogs have a way of turning even the simplest moments into comedy gold. Lucy may not have intended to put on a show, but judging by her fans’ reactions, she definitely made plenty of people smile.

Beginner Runner Wants Her Labradoodle as a Training Partner, but She Faces a New Challenge

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 6:48pm

Many people start running to improve their health. One Labradoodle may be about to gain a new hobby along the way.

As one dog mom posted on Reddit's r/RunningWithDogs, she wanted advice on how to start running with her Labradoodle. She described herself as a "very inexperienced runner," adding that the only running her dog has done has been while on a leash and only when rain starts falling.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

The Redditor's biggest fear was not understanding her dog's limits.

Start Where You Are, Not Where You Think You Should Be

The dog-running community responded with practical, specific, and applicable suggestions.

The most common recommendation was Couch to 5K, a free app structured around run-walk intervals. One commenter said, "If you're just starting running, you'll likely hit your limit before your dog does. I'd just start slow."

Another added, "Depending how inexperienced you are, his limits are probably much higher than yours (not trying to be rude, but good motivation to get better!) focus on what you're comfortable running - short easy runs? Run intervals? On a trail? Along sidewalks? And train your pup as you go."

And one commenter provided a specific answer, saying, "Run/walk intervals are a good place to start. The exact interval are up to you and your fitness level. You could start with 30s run/1.5 min walk. You could do 1 min run/1 min walk."

Labradoodles Are Built for Active Lifestyles

As many Redditors suggested in the thread, the dog probably has more stamina than his mom. Labradoodles are versatile dogs that combine the athleticism of poodles and the outgoing nature of Labrador retrievers. The combination can handle long distances, but the key is building fitness gradually.

How to Teach Your Dog to Be Calm While Running

Here is something not many people mentioned. Running with a dog is different than going for a walk. During walks, sniffing is part of the experience.

During a run, consistency matters, and dogs cannot sniff every two to three minutes. The key is creating a separate running routine. The best way is to use a specific harness, leash or running belt that signals to dogs that it is exercise time, not sniffing time.

Before adding speed, practice loose-leash walking to get your dog accustomed to running with you. Keep the early sessions short and fun. Reinforce consistent forward motion during run intervals and gently redirect when the dog pulls ahead or stops.

Once the expectations are firmly established, running with a dog is one of the best ways to build a habit that sticks. Your dog expects it, and you have to show up.

Pit Bull Has a Full-Blown 'Existential Crisis' Over Crossing the Cat's Path

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 6:10pm

Large dogs can be big softies. Certain breeds like the Great Dane, Cane Corso or Pit Bull look intimidating but often end up being gentle giants that scare easily. Some considerably big canines even get bossed around by their smaller pet siblings.

Stella the Pit Bull is a perfect example — she's a bit wary of her orange cat sibling even though the precious pooch is more than twice the pretty kitty's size.

@snickypoodle

same cat who gave her a tongue bath yesterday btw #pittiesoftiktok #apbtlove #orangecatbehavior

♬ Spooky, quiet, scary atmosphere piano songs - Skittlegirl Sound

In the TikTok from @snickypoodle, Stella attempted to tiptoe down the stairs when she saw her feline fur baby sibling asleep in the middle of the floor. Apparently, she was afraid to wake her kitty brother despite there being a huge size difference.

"My big scary Pit Bull having a 60-second existential crisis because she wants to come see me but the cat is blocking her path," the on-screen text explained, though, according to the caption, the orange cat was actually quite affectionate. "Same cat who gave her a tongue bath yesterday."

Stella innocently wagged her tail and whined, hoping her mom could somehow help her cross the room. Her mother sweetly encouraged her to take those courageous steps, but Stella stayed practically glued to the stairs.

Finally, with her mom's gentle coaching, the pretty Pittie bravely maneuvered her way past her fur baby brother and into her mom's welcoming arms.

Followers got a kick out of the amusing scene and noted that Pit Bulls are often big mush balls:

  • "This is so typical Pit Bull behavior — the BIGGEST babies!!" one remarked.
  • "The cat looking at you like, 'I’m not even gonna do anything, jeez!!'” another commented.
  • "Kitty was too relaxed to make the swat reach. Sweet babies!" someone posted.
Why Some Big Dogs Are Afraid of Cats

The stereotype of a cat cowering at the sight of a dog still exists today, though some canines get easily intimidated by felines. Several factors can play a part, including:

Related: Sweet Pit Bull 'Turns Into Chewbacca' When She Gets Her Nails Clipped

  • Body language — Dogs can read a cat's subtle movements and calm stare as unpredictable and a challenge, making them feel like they have to be on guard.
  • Past experiences — If your dog had a previous run-in with a cat that didn't go well, they may be fearful of getting close to a feline.
  • Personality — Some cats have an authoritative presence, which can be off-putting for a sensitive dog.

Creating boundaries and rewarding calm behavior can help your fur babies form a positive relationship. Stella may just need some time and support from her mom to feel totally at ease around her kitty brother.

Birdfy's Solar-Powered AI Bird Feeder Alerted Me to a Secret Visitor in My Backyard

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 5:43pm

Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

They say there's a moment in everyone's life when they look out their window, and suddenly find themselves obsessively interested in birds. And I have to say, that's true. My husband and I have recently developed a deep love for birdwatching. We've set up multiple feeders in our backyard, testing every type of bird seed and suet to figure out what our local birds like the best. Out of all the bird feeders I've tried, nothing beats Birdfy's AI feeders with solar-powered cameras. They're beautiful to look at, and they've opened up a whole new world for identifying and watching the birds who visit us.

Birdfy sent me a Birdfy Feeder Bamboo in exchange for my honest review. And it didn't take long for me to fall in love with it.

I have the standard 120 ounce model. It's a beautiful feeder that looks classy in my yard. Two bins on either side of the camera let you try different types of seed at once. An extended perch lets birds of different sizes visit.

The solar panel is separate from the feeder, which means you don't have to set up the feeder itself directly under the sun, as long as the solar panel is getting a lot of light. We chose to put the feeder at the top of a pole with a squirrel baffle beneath it.

It took less than a day for birds to start visiting. I've seen blue jays, mourning doves, tufted titmice, and chickadees.

And thanks to the feeder's AI, I even learned about a secret little visitor I didn't know was stopping by... More about that at the end of the article!

Assembling the Birdfy Feeder Was Simple

Courtesy of Stephanie Dwilson

Setting up the Birdfy Bamboo Feeder was pretty straightforward. It came mostly already assembled. I just had to charge the camera for 14 hours and pick where the feeder would hang. There were only a few additional steps needed. (And as you can see in the picture above, it holds up to a kitty sitting on it!)

As you can see in the photo below, the feeder has two columns on either side of the camera that you can fill with two different types of birdseed, if you want.

Courtesy of Stephanie Dwilson

My husband did the heavy lifting attaching the feeder to a pole outside. It probably took him about 30 minutes, and Birdfy provided the supplies he needed.

Note: Whenever you pick up this bird feeder, you want to hold it from the bottom. Don't pick it up from the top, as the roof only loosely attaches on the right side. It's designed this way so the top is easy to lift and refill with seed.

Courtesy of Stephanie Dwilson

I highly recommend attaching the feeder to a pole that has a squirrel baffle beneath it, so squirrels and rats can't get on your feeder.

Once the bird feeder was set up and connected to my WiFi, it started working immediately. That same day, we had a pretty intense thunderstorm. The feeder stayed connected and worked all through the storm.

The Feeder's Videos Are Beautiful and Its AI Spotted a Secret Visitor

Courtesy of Stephanie Dwilson

I've only had the Birdfy feeder up and running for nearly a week, but I already am loving it! Every morning I wake up to cute little notifications like the one pictured above. The Birdfy AI automatically identifies any bird that visits and sends me an alert about the feathered friend's presence. I get these throughout the day and night, and it's a lot of fun.

In fact, the AI helped me realize that we were getting a secret visitor in our backyard that I had no idea about! Every morning at 7 a.m., a little starling hops on our feeder and noms down on some seed before taking off. And he doesn't return until the next day!

This isn't the first time Birdfy alerted me to a secret visitor. I had the very first Birdfy feeder several years ago. Back then, I found out that a POSSUM was jumping onto my feeder late at night and eating all the seed. There was even one night when a raccoon stole some of the bird's food!

Now, I won't deny that the AI will occasionally get a bird's identity wrong. (It's gotten my blue jay visitors right about 95% of the time, but a couple times it thought they were mockingbirds.) Usually it only gets it wrong if the bird is standing farther away from the camera or looks a little different for some reason, like maybe he's visiting during a rainstorm.

The videos are high quality, and you can even hear the birds chomping down on their snacks. With the mourning doves who visit, I can clearly see the sharp blue color around their eyes and the bright pink color of their feet. It's greatly entertaining.

Where to Get the Birdfy

There are tons of places where you can get a Birdfy feeder (and some of them may even still ship in time for Father's Day!) Of course, I'm going to recommend the Bamboo one that I tried out, since it not only looks beautiful, but it holds a ton of seed as well.

Here are three places where you can pick it up:

If you're on the fence, I definitely recommend not debating your purchase any longer. The Birdfy Bamboo is beautiful, fun, and would make a great gift to yourself or to a family member or friend.

Woman Rescues Shelter Dog, Then Receives a Life-Changing Surprise

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 2:48pm

It's a familiar story: You rescue a dog thinking you saved their life. Yet, somehow, they end up saving yours and helping you out even more than you could have ever imagined.

One woman recently shared a story on Reddit's r/Habits, explaining how she adopted a shelter dog hoping to give him a better life. "I rescued him to give him a better life. turns out he had other plans for me too," the Redditor shared.

When she adopted her dog, she never thought he would help her quit smoking after 12 years. To celebrate her achievement of reaching 100 days smoke-free, she posted on Reddit to praise her four-legged companion.

Walks Instead of Cravings

The Redditor explained how her dog helped, saying that whenever she craved a cigarette, she would instead grab her dog's leash and go outside. She didn't care about the time of day or whether it was raining.

As OP noted, cravings usually last between three and five minutes. The good news is that dog walks usually take way longer than that.

According to her, the first week was brutal. Yet, after the tenth day, something changed. Her cravings were still there, but they lost their power. Somewhere during those daily walks, her cravings disappeared, and she is now 100 days smoke-free.

The Internet Reminded Her Who Deserves Credit

The comments quickly piled up. One former smoker congratulated her, saying, "Congrats on quitting. Everyday it gets better and easier. I quit after 17 years."

Another praised her determination, saying, "Even if your dog helped you still deserve the credit. You could have easily just lit up while you were outside with him, but you chose not to."

Her dog, which, judging by the photo, looks to be a golden retriever, provided support, but OP did the work.

Golden Retrievers, Therapy Dogs

Golden retrievers were bred to be companion animals and follow humans during hunting trips. While they are no longer hunting dogs, their instinct for staying close to their favorite human remains.

These dogs have a unique ability to be present without demanding anything in return. They don't judge or require any kind of explanation and will go for a walk even at 2 a.m. without complaint.

The combination of consistency, routine, movement and the presence of another can help anyone feel less alone. And sometimes, that is what we need in the first week of a challenging task.

This Redditor made it to day 100—and her golden was there every step of the way.

Rare Field Spaniel Celebrates His First Birthday, and He's Already the Most Gorgeous Dog on the Internet

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 12:52pm

Weighing in at 48 pounds and showing off one of the most gorgeous coats I've ever seen, Boone the Field Spaniel is celebrating his very first birthday and capturing hearts while he does it.

This stunning pup belongs to a rare dog breed that we don't see very often these days, and not only is Boone one good looking canine, but he has a big personality to match, even though he's still very much a baby.

@fieldspanielboone

our big guy is 48lbs and full of sass!!! #fieldspaniel #spanielsoftiktok #spaniel #fieldspanielpuppy #raredogbreeds

♬ EVERYTHING HALLELUJAH - Justin Bieber

Boone is definitely getting big, and it probably won't be much longer that his mom is able to hold him in her arms like this!

This Field Spaniel has come a long way and grown so much over the past year, which is especially obvious if you compare him now to this video of when he was a tiny puppy:

Boone was just as gorgeous as a baby as he is now — and of course, crazy adorable from the very beginning. Between that shiny dark coat and deep brown eyes, no other dog stands a chance next to him.

Spaniels are pretty common dogs in general, but this particular Spaniel breed that Boone belongs to is the rarest of them all.

What Exactly Is a Field Spaniel? You're Not Alone If You've Never Heard of One

Field Spaniels have become such a rare dog breed in recent years that most people out there have never (and probably will never) encounter one while out and about.

According to Good Dog, there are less than 2,000 Field Spaniels (also known as Fieldies) left in the entire world.

It's a shame, because they really are the sweetest dogs. The Field Spaniel personality is one that lends itself well to being a family dog, as they are affectionate creatures who are good with children and are typically very trainable, as the American Kennel Club (AKC) points out. Boone's humans are definitely lucky to have him.

According to the AKC, before Field Spaniels were considered rare, they nearly went extinct. From 1916 to 1960, not a single dog belonging to the breed was registered with the organization.

As people attempted to breed their idea of the perfect hunting dog into existence using Fieldies, the new version of the dog fell in popularity. But thanks to breeders who remembered what these dogs were supposed to look like, they were able to make a comeback decades later. Even today, they are still classified as a "vulnerable" breed by the Royal Kennel Club.

It's a good thing Field Spaniels didn't go extinct, or we wouldn't have Boone! To see more of this beautiful dog, you can follow Boone on TikTok, @fieldspanielboone.

Siberian Husky Puppy's Hilarious Attempt at Howling Has Everyone Weighing In

Thu, 06/18/2026 - 12:48pm

Here is something nobody tells you about owning a Siberian husky. The famous husky howl is not guaranteed. Huskies are famous for their "awooo," a trait that has become part of every husky video, husky meme, and a reason to get this amazing dog.

Yet, not every dog is the same. Reaper, an 8-month-old husky puppy, apparently missed the memo. As his dog mom explained in a Reddit post to r/husky, instead of howling, he just does a hyena impression.

Fellow husky parents immediately started sharing their stories. However, one Redditor warned, "Better be careful what you wish for."

The Husky Scream Is a Feature, Not a Bug

Speaking of funny comments, another hit the nail on the head, saying, "Ma'am, you have a husky. The husky scream is part of their core operating system, and sometimes it's the only 'howl' they ever use."

As one of the most vocal dog breeds, Siberian huskies have a wide range that goes beyond the classic howl. They can scream, yodel, whimper and "talk" in tonal syllables.

Still, some, like Reaper, never use the standard howl. As one Redditor confirmed, "My husky that knows how to howl still does this when she's mad at me."

Not Every Husky Gets the Instruction Manual

One of the most recognizable sounds of a husky is a dramatic howl that can be heard throughout the neighborhood.

Reality, however, is different. Many husky parents in the Reddit post confirmed the lack of howling. One said, "I have 7... none of them howl... they talk but none howl."

Another added, "I tried to teach my pup to howl on multiple occasions. He just looked at me like I was an idiot. I eventually gave up when the neighbors complained."

Can You Teach a Husky to Howl?

For pet parents who want to unlock their dog's inner wolf, patience is the best asset. Start by playing recordings of dogs howling. You can also try playing emergency vehicle sirens at low volume.

Many huskies instinctively want to join in. Or you can try howling yourself. Yes, it sounds silly. Here is the good news, though: Your dog will not judge you any more than they already do!

Short training sessions work better than long hours. Huskies are intelligent animals with an independent streak. If they find your training session boring, they will quickly end it.

Here's a tip to keep in mind: It's better to practice in the evening. Huskies are more vocal as the day winds down.
