Many dogs are happy to navigate life by your side, helping to make you feel less lonely in more ways than one. However, when it comes to dog breeds that bond closely with their owners, some are more affectionate and people-oriented than others. So, if you’re single, an empty nester or an introvert and are looking for a furbaby of your own, how can you know which one is right for you?

The most amazing furry friend is one that checks all of your boxes since it can very from pet parent to pet parent. “All dogs offer companionship, but some people want a dog that’s involved in everything they do, while others are happiest with a more independent dog that still forms a deep bond with its family,” says Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster. “After all, dogs become part of your daily routine, they’re excited to see you, and they share your life in a way that’s hard to put into words.”

And that day-to-day connection can offer more than a wagging tail waiting for you at the door. Besides giving you love, dogs can also help give you structure, along with a reason to get out and about, which can be helpful for people who feel isolated, according to Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel. “The best dog breed will depend on someone’s lifestyle, experience and whether you can meet that dog’s needs,” Warner points out.

With that in mind, here are seven breeds vets say take the “best friend” role seriously. See which one you connect with the most.

7 Dog Breeds That Can Make Your Life Feel Less Lonely Poodle These pups are happiest when they’re included in the family.

The Poodle has a reputation for being aloof, but these pups are actually excellent daily partners, according to Myers. “People tend to picture fancy haircuts, but underneath is an exceptionally athletic, intelligent working dog,” she says. Myers calls this breed “highly trainable,” noting that they’re “very engaged with their people.”

Because of that, these loving dog breeds are ready to fill your days with friendship, affection and plenty of tail wags.

“Poodles are happiest when they’re included in whatever their family is doing,” Myers says. “For someone looking for a dog that truly becomes part of everyday life, that constant engagement can make them wonderfully rewarding companions.” Chyrle Bonk, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance.

Besides being smart, Bond praises this breed’s emotional intelligence, noting that they tend to do well at recognizing and appropriately responding to people’s moods, making them great dogs for emotional support. “They tend to bond deeply to those they’re close to,” she says.

Pug Pugs are cuddly, people-loving pups.

Pugs have a love for people that runs deep. “Pugs are usually affectionate dogs that like to be near their people,” Warner shares. “Their playful nature can make them lovely company, especially in households where someone is home for much of the day.”

In fact, this pooch was bred to be man’s best friend, Myers points out. “Many seem to take that responsibility very seriously,” she explains.

While Pugs are petite, Myers says they have “oversized personalities” that lead to closer relationships with their people. “If someone is looking for a dog that enjoys curling up beside them, sharing their daily routine and providing lots of interaction and affection, it’s easy to understand why so many people become devoted Pug owners.”

However, these small dogs do need a little extra care as vets say Pugs are a brachycephalic, or flat-faced, breed, which means that they’re at a higher-than-usual risk of developing certain health issues like breathing difficulties.

Akita Akits are fiercely loyal to the people they call family.

The Akita is known for being a dependable breed, so you can expect these furry dogs to love you with all their heart—and make every day feel a little less lonely when they’re by your side.

“Akitas can be very devoted to their families and are often calm at home,” Warner says. One of the most famous Akitas named Hachikō even became a global symbol of loyalty as he was known for waiting at Shibuya Station in Tokyo every day for his late owner to return home from work. It just goes to show how tight of a connection these pups can form with people.

While Myers says the Akita can be loving and form extraordinarily deep bonds with their families, vets say the breed can be reserved compared to say, a Labrador Retriever. “For the right owner, that steady loyalty can create an incredibly meaningful relationship,” Myers reveals.

Just be aware that the Akita will need good training, socialization and management. “For someone who understands and appreciates the breed, the relationship can be incredibly rewarding,” Myers says.

Chihuahua Chihuahuas are known for their strong attachment to their owners.

Don’t mistake the Chihuahua’s teeny size for a lack of heart. This pooch loves to be a friend to human and these affectionate pups can bring a little more companionship, joy and love to your everyday life.

In fact, since Chihuahuas were originally bred to be companion dogs, most lean into that role. “Chihuahuas tend to bond deeply to one or a few people, making them constant companions that will follow a person from room to room,” Bonk says.

This sweet dog breed tends to be easy to care for as well, but Warner points out that they’re fragile, making it crucial to handle your pooch with care if you become a pet parent to on. Still, that teeny frame can make this pup good for people who are on the go a lot and want to be able to bring their pup along or even seniors who want a lap dog. “Their small size makes them ideal for any living situation or for travel,” Bonk says.

Yorkshire Terrier Vets say Yorkies are loving little sidekicks.

Looking for a four-legged best friend? Yorkshire Terriers might have an adorable old man look thanks to their furry eyebrows and mustache, but these pup are far from grumpy. Yorkies tend to be highly affectionate and prefer to stick by your side.

“Yorkies are the ultimate lap dog,” Bonk says. “They love nothing more than being with their people, often following them around, providing constant companionship.”

While they’re small, Yorkshire Terriers have lots of energy and a playful spirit. As a result, regular walks and playtime are needed to keep your pooch well entertained. Another plus? Despite their shaggy coat, this pooch isn’t a big shedder. They also do well with a lot of different settings, making them a good pup for frequent travelers and empty nesters.

Corgi Corgis are one of the most devoted four-legged friends.

With those big ears, little legs and huge personalities, Corgis have a way of making sure you’re never short on company. So it’s no surprise vets recommend them as pets for people of all ages who want a steady presence and trusted friend.

“They usually enjoy being involved in family life and can form close bonds with their people,” Bonk says. Because of this, this pooch is as faithful as they come and will be a natural guardian as well, giving you a small protector, whether you’re exploring the outdoors or snuggling together inside.

Dachshund These tiny pups pack big personalities and form strong bonds with their owners.

It’s hard not to smile when you spot a Dachshund, with their stubby little legs and elongated body. But this pup is also known for being a great buddy who is incredibly affectionate with family members. “I’ve seen them form remarkable relationships with the right people,” Myers says. 

Dachshunds are a fun-loving breed that’s usually up for anything, making them a good fit for many households. This breed also tends to be smart and vigilant, doing double-duty as friends and watchdogs.

Just be aware that the Dachshund can be overly brave at times and even a little stubborn, making careful training a must.

I don’t know what I expect to see when I open my eyes in the morning, but a silver-haired Persian cat staring through the bedroom door like she just crawled out of a tiny nightclub is not usually on the list.

In the video, a woman wakes up to find Cookie waiting outside her room after breakfast, and my goodness, this cat has a look. Not a polished royal Persian look. The caption makes the reveal even better, because at first it sounds ominous. Something is waiting outside the bedroom door. Then we find out it is just Cookie, post-breakfast, looking like a sleepy gremlin with a trust fund.

I say this with love: She has a face only a mother could love, and apparently, the entire internet, too.

That’s the magic of Persians. They are fancy, fluffy, and dramatic, even when they’re doing absolutely nothing. Cookie isn’t running, jumping, or causing chaos. She is simply existing in the doorway with the kind of face that turns a regular morning into a full comedy sketch.

The people in the comments section understood the assignment. One viewer warned, in full movie monster logic, that maybe Cookie should not be fed after midnight. Honestly, yes. She has that “small creature with mysterious rules” energy. Feed her breakfast, and suddenly she appears in the hallway looking like she has lived nine lives before 9 a.m.

I can’t stop looking at her expression. It’s tired. It’s offended. It’s slightly haunted. It’s also perfect.

Persian cats look fancy, but that fancy coat comes with maintenance. Their long fur can tangle quickly, and their flat little faces can also make eye cleaning part of the routine. • Brush before mats happen. A few calm minutes with a comb or brush can keep that long coat from turning into painful tangles.

What Your Cat’s Facial Expressions Really Mean

Cats are excellent communicators through their more than 300 distinct facial expressions. Experts say not all of these expressions are obvious, so it takes a little investigating.

For example, a subtle shift in their ears, eyes, or whiskers could convey they’re feeling friendly, angry, or scared. It takes knowing your cat and their reactions to their environment to understand what those expressions are communicating.

For example, if they’re feeling social and/or happy, they might:

• Slow blink to show trust
• Point their ears slightly forward or sit in a relaxed position to show curiosity or contentment
• Fan their whiskers out to signal they’re cool, calm, and collected

When a kitty is feeling annoyed, defensive, or aggressive, they might flatten their ears with restricted pupils or lick their lips in fast swipes, which is like saying “I’m super stressed right now, so back off.”

Any time a cat has dilated pupils where there’s more black in their eyes than color, or a tightened muzzle with rigid whiskers, they’re trying to tell you they’re afraid of something or possibly even in pain.

Seeing dogs in need can be difficult, but when humans are able to step in and help, it’s a reminder that there is good in the world.

How To Care for Rescue Puppies

Rescue animals require a lot of patience, time, and attention, which you definitely want to take into consideration before stepping in as part of the rescue process. While very rewarding, it can be a lot of work!

Some Tips for Handling Rescue Puppies:

• Have plenty of supplies for cleaning and sanitizing on hand at all times.
• Puppy-proof your home so nothing like cords or wires are accessible to curious pups.
• Make sure there’s a secure and safe place for them to adjust and acclimate.
• Establish a good routine immediately to help the puppy (or puppies) learn what to expect.
• Make sure there is plenty of quiet time available for the puppy.
• Take your time and don’t rush new things! It’s already all new to a puppy, so do your best not to overwhelm them.

With any rescue animal, whether a puppy or something else entirely, it’s super important to make sure you’re well-versed in their needs, of any medical issues that may be present, and what could arise in terms of a health perspective. A good vet and the experts involved in the rescue process are great resources to rely on to make sure they’re getting proper care at all times.

In late summer, animal shelters face their biggest crisis. This is because during this time, many rescues experience severe overcrowding. Not only that, but animal shelter workers may experience even higher rates of burnout than they already do, and resources are incredibly strained, meaning animals potentially won’t receive the care they need. Overcrowding is also incredibly stressful and highly overstimulating for the animals in shelters.

To find out more about the overcrowding crisis at animal shelters in August, we spoke with Tiffany Lacey, the executive director of Animal Haven, a New York City-based animal welfare organization. Keep reading below to learn more about why shelters are double full at this time of year, as well as ways you can support rescues and help alleviate the stress of shelter animals and shelter workers. Even if you can’t adopt a shelter animal at this time, you can still help shelter staff and our furry friends in other small ways.

The August Overcrowding: 3 Reasons Shelters Are ‘Double Full’

“By late summer, shelters like Animal Haven are often operating beyond capacity for a few overlapping reasons,” Lacey says. Below are the main drivers overcrowding happens this time of year.

1. Kitten season is at its peak.

Warmer months trigger more frequent breeding cycles in unaltered cats, and many shelters see the surge extend right through summer. Community cats and their litters make up a huge share of this influx of kittens.

2. Life changes can happen.

“Life changes drive more owner surrenders,” Lacey says. “Summer travel, moves and changes in family schedules can sometimes lead to more owner surrenders. August in particular lines up with lease turnovers and back-to-school season.”

3. The number of loose and lost animals may be higher.

“The warm summer months are a perfect time to go adventuring with your pet, but that also increases the risk of them getting lost,” Lacey says. “Additionally, the milder weather means people leave doors and windows open, giving cats and dogs a chance to slip out and get lost. Pet parents should always make sure their pets are microchipped and wearing an up-to-date ID tag.”

The Hidden Drivers Forcing Heartbreaking Surrenders

In August, animal shelters see higher levels of surrenders for a number of heartbreaking reasons, and one of the biggest is because of finances. “For many families, it comes down to finances,” Lacey explains. “Animal Haven takes in hundreds of owner surrenders each year, and economic forces are increasingly behind this heartbreaking decision. With the cost of veterinary care and pet supplies rising (coupled with overall inflation), many pet parents can simply no longer afford to take care of their animals.”

In addition to financial strain, housing problems also can play a role. “Housing barriers are another reason that families surrender their pets. One national analysis found housing issues account for 13.7 percent of surrenders, and it’s the top reason cited for dog surrenders specifically, at 14.1 percent,” Lacey says.

Finally, personal health or the health of someone in the family may cause animal surrenders. “Often, these pets just need temporary shelter while their families heal or caregive,” Lacey says. “That’s why more shelters are adopting retention initiatives like Animal Haven’s community engagement program, which provides temporary care and resources to keep pets with their families.”

Why Shelter Workers Are Burning Out Fast

Animal shelter workers face high rates of burnout for a number of reasons. “People who choose to work at animal shelters tend to love animals, and it’s tough to see something you love endure suffering or abandonment,” Lacey explains. “Shelter staff are constantly toeing a line between compassion satisfaction (we adore the moments when animals get adopted and go home!) and compassion fatigue. Day in and out, staff are on the front lines of neglect and abuse cases, lost pets, and animals that are mentally or behaviorally deteriorating in the shelter environment.”

There is also the physical demands of the job. “On top of the emotional burden, shelter work is physically demanding and, at times, dangerous, as staff are exposed to pathogens and unpredictable animals” Lacey says. “Compounding this, shelters often find themselves understaffed while animals continue to come through the doors, meaning there are fewer hands to care for more animals.”

“There are many ways to get involved in your local animal shelter, whether you’ve already adopted an animal or are currently unable to,” Lacey says.

1. Donate funds or supplies.

“Providing shelter, nutrition, supplies and medical care to animals is expensive. For shelters like Animal Haven, which often takes in high-needs medical cases, financial donations go a long way to cover costly procedures and extended hospital stays,” Lacey says. “For those that are unable to donate financially, supplies are a huge help. Beyond food, treats, toys and cleaning supplies, shelters are almost always in need of clean, used linens like towels and sheets. This is a win-win for the planet too, as it gives old linens a second life.”

2. Support spay and neuter access.

“Prevention is the highest-leverage intervention available,” Lacey says. “Community cat programs and low-cost spay/neuter clinics interrupt the cycle before it starts. Pet parents should always spay and neuter their own pets to prevent further overcrowding. Most shelters, like Animal Haven, ensure pets are spayed or neutered before they go home.”

3. Foster a furry friend.

Every animal in foster care frees up a kennel for one coming through the door. Additionally, fostering can be a huge help for animals that are stressed in a shelter environment. Fostering is especially critical for underage kittens and puppies who need round-the-clock bottle feeding.  

4. Volunteer your time, transport or professional skills.

Many shelters are short-staffed, and volunteer hours directly reduce the burden on paid staff. Volunteering can involve dog walking, cat socialization, event support, or transporting animals between shelters and rescue partners.

Dr. Elden adds that early dehydration can also be subtle. “They may just look quieter than normal, eat a little less or just not act like themselves,” she says. “As dehydration gets worse, they get tacky or dry gums, their skin gets less elastic, and then you see weakness or even sunken-looking eyes if the dehydration is severe. I tell owners: know your cat’s normal, and pay attention to small changes.”

To me, it’s less ‘plastic is toxic’ and more ‘why choose a material that becomes harder to sanitize when there are better options?'”

1. Put water in their food.

Dr. Elden says this is her favorite hydration hack because the cat doesn’t have to make a conscious decision to drink more. “Wet food already contains a lot of moisture, and you can even mix a little additional water into their food as well,” she says.

2. Put multiple fresh water bowls or fountains all over the house.

“In other words, make water ridiculously easy to find,” Dr. Elden says. “One bowl in the kitchen may not cut it. Put bowls in quiet, cool areas your cat already likes hanging out in. In multi-cat homes, this matters even more. One cat can absolutely intimidate another away from a shared resource.”

3. Make the water super appealing.

Fresh water, clean bowls and, for cats who like it, moving water from a fountain are all features that appeal to cats, Dr. Elden says. “Some cats prefer cool water, some room temperature; cats have opinions about basically everything. The goal is to figure out what makes your cat want to go back for another drink,” she says.

Why Are Newfoundlands So Confident and Friendly?

Alaskan malamutes are some of the fluffiest dog breeds around, but that fluff comes with responsibilities. Daily brushing and regular grooming are a must.

Ursula is an adult malamute who has never been to the groomer before. The moment groomer Vanessa De Prophetis (aka Girl With the Dogs) saw her, she joked that “she appeared to be smuggling an entire second dog underneath all that fluff.”

When the grooming treatment finished, Ursula looked like a different dog. Her mom couldn’t recognize her. Her coat looked lighter, cleaner and less bulky.

Ursula’s First Time at the Groomer

Ursula had never had a professional groomer and was obviously nervous about the bath. She also makes it very clear that she doesn’t like certain areas of her body to be touched.

Regardless, due to a heavily compacted coat with matting and staining, Ursula badly needs this grooming session. To clean Ursula, De Prophetis uses multiple shampoos and works through the dense coat.

Still, despite De Prophetis’ best efforts to make Ursula comfortable, she growled and became nippy during the bath. As some fans joked under the video, it was like she was saying, “I’m named after BEAR. Bears do not take baths.”

At the end of the video, De Prophetis shows the before-and-after, which makes it crystal clear why Ursula needed to be groomed. Before the grooming session, Ursula’s coat was thick and fluffy, with her undercoat making her look larger. But afterward, her outline was cleaner.

Even the color of Ursula’s coat changed. De Prophetis manages to remove the dirt, yellow staining, and everything in between from Ursula’s fur, making her white coat look brighter and more beautiful.

Grooming Is a Must for Malamutes

Bred to survive Arctic conditions, malamutes have a soft, dense undercoat that provides insulation and a coarser outer coat that repels moisture.

Fans were quick to point out that getting a malamute comes with certain responsibilities. One of them is taking your dog for regular grooming.

One fan said, “This poor girl should have been acclimated to regular grooms since she was a puppy, with blowouts at minimum twice a year.”

Another talked about responsible dog ownership, saying, “This is a prime example of why maintenance is critical. So many people get certain breeds because they’re their ‘dream’ dog, not understanding the full scope of that particular breed’s needs.”

It’s critical that pet parents of Siberian huskies and malamutes get their pups used to grooming sessions at a young age. They should see a groomer regularly before their coats become a problem.

Ursula’s grooming was more about looking prettier. A compacted coat can trap heat, moisture, dirt and debris against the skin, and matting can make brushing uncomfortable.

All that can irritate the skin. At one point in the video, De Prophetis confesses, “I don’t know if this dog’s coat is going to be savable. It looks like it’s really matted.”

When Ursula’s mom sees her transformation, all she can say is “Wow. Wow. She hasn’t felt like this in a long time.” But it’s best not to wait for that “wow” moment.

While Ursula’s transformation is remarkable, it also serves as a reminder for pet parents: regular grooming is essential.

How Companionship Helps Dogs Heal Emotionally

We know that dogs benefit significantly from their strong bonds with humans, but it turns out their relationships with other dogs as well as other animals can also help them, as we see here with Barley and Louis.

According to a study published in the journal Evolution, Medicine & Public Health, dogs who had companion animals were healthier than those with fewer household companions.

But if you opt for a dog instead of a duck, your dog will also benefit from that relationship.

Another recent study from the Dog Aging Project found that dogs who live with other canines also experience health benefits.

My cats have two settings when it comes to closed doors. They’ll either stare at the door in quiet judgment until I open it … or they’ll act like I’ve accidentally trapped them in an abandoned Victorian mansion with a ghost.

The TikTok from @cassondrachristman shared Max’s story and explained how no one has ever considered him for adoption.

“Imagine waiting 126 days and not one person asks to meet you,” the on-screen text shared as Max stared out of his kennel watching people walk right by. “Max has never had a meet-and-greet. Not one adoption application.”

Described as the “sweetest, friendliest boy,” Max was surrendered to the Maui Humane Society when his family had to move and he “wasn’t allowed to come.” Being a ‘tripod’ dog is making it more of a challenge for Max to find a forever home.

“People see three legs… and keep walking,” the story continued. “But if they asked to meet him, they’d see everything he is.”

Accommodations for a ‘Tripod’ Dog

There aren’t many additional expenses when adopting a three-legged dog unless the pooch needs physical therapy. Some safeguards and accommodations in your home can help your tripod adapt quickly, including:

Kathy Jennings caught this bumblebee diligently gathering some nectar, and I’ve never seen anything quite like it. She is absolutely covered in pollen, almost looking like a snowman with it all over her! She’s going to be able to pollinate every flower in the neighborhood!

Most likely, she already had a bunch of pollen all over her, only to pick more up from this flower and spread some to it. She was in the flower for the nectar, but pollen was a total bonus. And a lot of it!
