But they also have a personality many pet owners can get behind, according to Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian contributor at Embrace Pet Insurance. “A Persian cat's Persian cat personality is generally laidback and lower energy once they are out of the kitten phase and they are really affectionate and loving,” she says.

While they have a petite muzzle that lends itself to a grumpy look, Persians tend to enjoy the company of humans. “Persian cats often will follow their owners from room to room,” Hunt says. “They frequently are lap cats as well.” Just be aware that this breed prefers a peaceful environment if you adopt one. “They appear to be the happiest in a stable and predictable home environment,” she says. “Instead of running around the house all day, they are known to have a relaxed and easygoing nature.”

So what is an Exotic Shorthair cat's personality like? "This cat breed that looks mean is actually known for being friendly, quiet and extremely affectionate," according to Warner. "They appear to inherit the gentle and human-loving personality that is characteristic of Persians, but in a slightly more relaxed and playful manner. This feline enjoys spending time with its humans while also enjoying the quiet. “Their rather serious and grumpy face may not reflect their true and loving nature,” Warner says. "This is a lower-energy breed, so expect your Exotic Shorthair to spend more time cuddling in your lap than zipping around your place."

"This misunderstood cat breed has an affectionate personality and often will follow their owner from room to room in their house, always wanting to be nearby and social."

Warner is also a fan of this breed. “British Shorthairs tend to be absolutely wonderful cats to have around the house and appear to be independent but not aloof, and affectionate but not demanding,” she says. “Owners often adore their peaceful nature and how they are a steady presence at home.”

This feline is also whipsmart, according to Hunt. “They are very intelligent and thus quite trainable, should the owner spend the time to do so,” she says. They’re also affectionate and like to be where their owner is. “Some are lap cats, while others prefer just to be nearby their pet parent instead,” she says. “Despite their energy level, they are gentle cats, and appropriate for a family or homes that have other pets.” Warner points out that Scottish Folds tend to develop close personal relationships with family members, and enjoy being involved in the lives of their humans.

Himalayan cats have traits inherited from both Persian and Siamese cats, along with a delightfully cute angry expression, according to Hunt. “From Persian cats they get their calm, gentle nature and their love of naps and quiet time,” she says. “From Siamese cats, they get their coat coloring, playfulness, curiosity, independence and intelligence.” 

These crabby-looking cats are more on the independent side and tend to be less snuggly as a result, according to Hunt. “When they do want to snuggle, it is, of course, on their own terms,” she explains. But Warner says despite appearing angry, they are affectionate and playful. “They are known to enjoy lives in stable homes with lots of attention and contact with their owners, and are extremely content when perched in their favorite place,” Warner says. “Don’t let their face fool you as behind that stern look is a cat that’s gentle and extremely loving.”

With summer on the horizon, pet parents are planning road trips, staycations, and beach days where they and their pups can enjoy all the warm weather has to offer. There's nothing better than enjoying the sand and the surf with your best pup alongside you. But not every destination is pup-friendly.

Recently, the list of the top dog-friendly beaches in America was released. Unsurprisingly, the state with the most beaches in the top ten was California. Overall, the state has more dog-friendly beaches than any other state bordering the ocean. But there were a few surprising additions to the list.

Top 10 Dog-Friendly Beaches in the United States

There's nothing quite like taking your pup with you to the beach. Watching them joyously splash through the waves while galloping up and down its sandy shores is worth the time and effort it will take to get all of that sand out of their fur. While not all vacation-worthy beaches are dog-friendly, Beaches Everywhere just released their top destination throughout the United States where pups and their humans can get in a little R&R in the sand and sun.

It's no surprise that California beaches make appearances in the top 10. But lucky pups visiting the Golden State have three beaches to choose from in the top 10 alone: Huntington Beach, Long Beach and Carmel. Florida has the second-highest mentions, while other states like Oregon and Texas feature one-off beach locations to represent their pristine shores. However, the real surprise is the contender from Illinois.

The top 10 beaches are:

• Rosie’s Dog Beach — Long Beach, California
• Montrose Dog Beach — Chicago, Illinois

The study doesn't stop at the top 10 in the nation, though. It goes on to thoughtfully cover the 50 most dog-friendly beaches in the United States, both freshwater and saltwater, spanning about 20 states. The thorough study accounts for factors such as a welcoming environment, overall pet policies, designated pet areas, visitor popularity, and overall accessibility.

“Our goal was to help travelers easily discover beaches where dogs are welcome,” a spokesperson for BeachEverywhere said in a press release. “Many pet owners plan their vacations around places where their dogs can enjoy the outdoors with them.”

As it stands, pet travel is one of the fastest-growing areas of tourism. The industry is seeing travelers seeking destinations where they can bring their dogs along for the adventure.

“As more travelers bring their dogs on vacation, beaches that allow pets are becoming increasingly popular,” the BeachEverywhere team noted in the press release.

Other Top Beach Contenders

California doesn't just hold the most slots in the top 10. The coast-lined state has six beaches to offer dog owners, including Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego, Fort Funston Beach in San Francisco, and Montara Beach in San Mateo County.

Florida sticks close with five beaches in the top 50, including Bonita Beach Dog Park in Bonita Springs, Gulside City Park in Sanibel Island and Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach.

Other coastal states on the list are Oregon, Washington, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and Hawaii. The freshwater contenders include Nevada, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.

Before you head out to the beach with your pup, be sure to check the rules to see if you need to bring a leash or if your pup can only be there during specific hours. Some beaches also have special dog-only areas. Bring plenty of water for you and your dog. The last thing you want is your day at the beach ruined by dehydration.

Also, research whether there is any wildlife you and your pup need to avoid, and always pack out everything you bring in. It's important to follow the principles of Leave No Trace, whether your pup is accompanying you to the beach or to the river.

"Cat anxiety is usually a result of fearful or stressful experiences early in a cat’s life, like poor socialization as a kitten, some sort of physical illness or trauma or current illness or pain," Dr.Humm-Beatty reports. "It can also be a result of changes in a cat’s environment, like moving, getting a new pet, taking on a new baby, or even adding a new roommate. Some cats may even be anxious when they are separated from their owner."

8 Hidden Signs Your Cat is Anxious, According to a Vet

When you understand the hidden signs your cat is anxious, you can help your pet feel better. Dr. Humm-Beatty suggests flagging cat anxiety symptoms with your pet's vet, as they may actually be signs of something else. "If you think your cat is anxious, it is important to talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible to help decide if your cat is anxious or sick and decide on the best plan," Dr. Humm-Beatty says. Below are some common signs of cat anxiety you might mention to your vet.

1. Excessive or less grooming

Have you ever asked yourself, "Is my cat stressed or anxious?" Well, one way to tell has to do with the amount they groom themselves. "Healthy cats are usually good about grooming when they need to. However, anxious cats may go to one of two extremes, grooming way more than necessary or not enough," Dr. Humm-Beatty says. "Changes in a cat’s grooming habits can be a sign of anxiety. An anxious cat may groom excessively as stress relief, or an anxious cat might stop regular grooming altogether, as much of its energy is being used and conserved in maintaining a ready fight or flight response."

2. Dilated pupils

It's easy to miss how your cat's eyes look, but it can be another cat anxiety symptom that shows you whether they're experiencing mental stress or not. In fact, Dr. Humm-Beatty says dilated pupils are a hidden sign your cat is anxious.

"This sign can range from slightly dilated—enlarged—pupils to completely dilated pupils depending on the cat’s level of anxiety," she explains. "This sign is part of the fight or flight sympathetic nervous system response to fear, stress and danger."

3. Certain ear positions

The eyes aren't the only feature that can tell a non-fiction story about your cat's anxiety levels. Dr. Humm-Beatty says the ears also offer clues. "In an anxious cat, their ear position might change from slightly tipped to the side to their ears being completely flattened against their head," Dr. Humm-Beatty explains. "The change in ear position is an instinct that cats have to protect their ears from danger."

Dr. Humm-Beatty shares that slight ear position shifts could also be a kitty's way of cautiously checking out their environment for potential danger. "When a cat’s ears are completely flat against their head, it is a warning sign to people that a cat is in an extreme defensive position and may lash out or attack," she adds.

4. Litter box accidents

The reason this behavior gets labeled as one of the hidden signs your cat is anxious is that many owners misread litter box accidents as spite, especially during big changes, like a new baby or shift in routine. But that’s not typical cat behavior.

Instead, Dr. Humm-Beatty explains that avoiding the litter box is often one of the clearest cat anxiety symptoms and may point to deeper cat stress symptoms or underlying health concerns. “Any time a cat is not using the litter box appropriately, it is an important cue for owners about their cat’s health and possible stress,” Dr. Humm-Beatty notes.

In many cases, these behavior changes in cats are linked to anxious cat behavior, making it essential to understand how to tell if your cat is anxious and address the root cause early.

5. Following you more

Often, pet parents assume cats will hide if they are stressed or scared. So, following you around more is a more overlooked andis hidden sign that your cat is anxious. "In situations involving separation stress, a cat might follow their owner around excessively," Dr. Humm-Beatty reveals. "This is because in separation anxiety, the source of danger or fear for the cat is being separated from or abandoned by their owner."

6. Less playfulness

Many owners overlook reduced activity as one of the subtle signs your cat is anxious. A noticeable drop in energy or interest in play can reflect general cat stress symptoms. "In an anxious cat, the fight or flight sympathetic nervous system is activated, leading them to be on high alert and monitoring their environment for threats, which consumes a lot of a cat’s energy," Dr. Humm-Beatty says. "This leaves a cat with less energy and attention for playful activities. Playfulness in a cat requires the cat to feel relaxed and less threatened."

These types of behavior changes in cats are often linked to anxious cat behavior, particularly in environments where the cat feels unsafe or overstimulated. A decrease in playfulness can also indicate a medical issue, so it’s important to consult a veterinarian if you notice persistent changes in your cat’s activity level.

7. Extra vocalizations

Excessive meowing in cats can be an early indicator of stress, though it’s often mistaken for routine behavior such as hunger or reacting to outside activity. A noticeable change in how often or how loudly a cat vocalizes may signal underlying feline anxiety symptoms. "A stressed or anxious cat may exhibit increased vocalizations from repeated meowing to increased frequency and volume yowling," Dr. Humm-Beatty reports. "This is a normal response to stress or fear."

8. Tense/hunched back

A tense or hunched back can be one of the more visible signs your cat is anxious. Anxious or fearful cats often adopt this posture as a protective measure. “The hunched posture protects the vital internal organs from harm,” Dr. Humm-Beatty notes.

How Do Dogs Learn Their Names?

Dogs actually process language in a way that is fairly similar to humans, through a combination of speech recognition, vowel recognition, and context, to help them understand what words are being said.

So when it comes to their name, dogs learn through conditioning.

They start to recognize the sound, inclination, and tone of the sound their human makes when you say their name.

Eventually, dogs start to learn other words such as "No!" (that's a big one), "Good boy/girl," "sit," "treat," "walk," "go outside," "grandma," etc.

Research has found that pups can recognize up to 200 words!

As for some tips on teaching a young dog to know their name, here are a few from the American Kennel Club:

•  Only practice positive reinforcement training. Call their name, and when they come, they get a treat!
• Be consistent. If they start responding to their name, keep going. Maybe throw in some verbal praise and not always treats, and make them turn and look at you, and then see you call their name.
• No negativity! Don't penalize them or just shout louder if they don't come when you call their name.

Looking at Roswell, you can see his paws really do look like baking gloves that are a bit too big for his frame. A few things contribute to a cat having disproportionate paws, such as their breed or a genetic trait like polydactylism (which means having extra toes).

Maine Coons are famously known for being both polydactyl and having big, fluffy paws, but it can happen to any kitten whose parents have the genes. There's also a phase during kittenhood when their body develops at a slower rate than their paws, but they'll eventually settle into them evenly.

A Quiet Night Turned Into Something Unthinkable

In a small village in northern New Mexico, Honey was doing what she always does—keeping watch over her family’s farm.

Despite being a senior and partially blind, she takes her “farm patrol” duties seriously, and her family relies on her to help protect their property and the animals on it. This includes two horses and more than 60 chickens.

But one night, something unusual caught her attention. And by morning, Honey was nowhere to be found for breakfast. At first, her family didn't think much of her missing breakfast, as she's been known to wander. But when they finally found her hours later, it was clear something had gone horribly wrong.

The Heroic Fight No One Saw Coming

Based on security footage and tracks around the property, Honey had encountered a bear fresh out of hibernation, and instead of backing down, she stood her ground.

The animal had come looking for an easy meal, drawn to the chickens on the property. But Honey intervened. Exactly how it all unfolded in the dark isn’t fully known. What is clear is that Honey repeatedly put herself between the threat and her family’s animals.

"Back and forth from coop to coop, Honey warded off the bear," Española Humane wrote on Facebook.

Eventually, the bear left, and remarkably, not a single chicken or other animal was harmed or lost.

A Second Chance

When Honey’s family found her, she had sustained severe injuries. Her face and neck showed clear signs of a violent encounter, and it was uncertain whether she would survive.

They rushed her to an urgent care clinic run by Española Humane, where veterinarians confirmed the extent of the damage. It was serious and life-threatening. 

But Honey wasn’t done fighting. Thanks to the support of Española Humane and their generous supporters, Honey was able to receive surgery and ongoing care at a low cost. 

Today, Honey is back home, surrounded by her family. And get this: her mom shared that Honey is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, which makes it even more incredible that she stood her ground against a bear. It just goes to show how deeply she loves and protects her home and the people (and animals) in it.

Yet, minutes later, the walk was over, and Olly had to go to the vet for an emergency checkup. As the original poster said in their Reddit post, Olly is now fine. But the experience? An Unlikely Friendship You Have to See

The short five-second video is all the time you need to have your heart melt and your emotions in knots at the sight of this adorable furry pair. In what looks like the aftermath of a fun-filled day at the park or a visit with family, a German shepherd and a Russian Blue cat are knocked out comfortably in the backseat of a car.

And you might be thinking, “I see no issues here.” But once you notice the cat’s entire head resting gently in the German shepherd’s mouth, suddenly you’re left wondering: “Is that normal?”

Reddit users had plenty to say, of course. “I've never seen a cat calmly sleep in a car, much less sleep in a car with its head in a dog's mouth,” u/Soloflow786 captioned the post.

“For some dogs, it’s like holding hands,” one viewer chimed in. “My dog used to do this to the cat and the same, but on the arm for his human family. Very gentle, didn’t hurt.”

Others commented on the unlikely duo and their unusual sleeping position: “Once bonded, it’s amazing how they interact,” one person said. “For dogs, sleeping with something in their mouth can be pretty normal,” another added.

“The simple trick to a good night’s rest sleep doctors don’t want you to know,” joked someone else.

And another person perfectly summed up exactly what we were all thinking: “Would be a very bad time for that dog to start dreaming that it’s crunching on a delicious bone.”

Here's how it would theoretically work: households could claim credits for up to two pets. For everyday expenses like food, grooming supplies, leashes, collars, and toys, you'd get up to $150 per pet. In the grand scheme of pet parenthood, that’s not much but something is better than nothing. For medical and vet costs—check-ups, medications, emergency care, necessary tests—the credit goes up to $300 per pet.

Combined, that's potentially $450 per pet, with a total cap of $900 for two animals per year.

The comments section had opinions.

"Now people gonna get dogs just for a tax break 😭," predicting unintended consequences.

Personally, this would be amazing because some pets have a lot of health conditions and it's hard to financially support them when you also have children. Even if you don't, the cost of vet visits, food, toys, etc., it racks up quickly, especially when you have more than one. Hopefully, if this legislation passes more states will follow suit.

The proposal specifically covers dogs and cats kept as companions—so working animals probably wouldn't qualify. And if it passes, pet parents would need to keep receipts and documentation showing what they spent throughout the year.

One estimate mentioned in the coverage: one pet can cost up to $4,300 a year. That's a lot when you consider that’s in addition to other everyday life expenses. And as the news anchor said: "They're worth it. We love our pets."
