“Teacup dogs are essentially extra-small versions of already toy-size breeds,” says Nita Vasudevan, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. "The term isn’t an official breed classification used by veterinary or kennel organizations, but it’s commonly used to describe dogs bred to be much smaller than the standard size for their breed. And while every teacup breed is slightly different, they tend to share similar personality traits and features with their larger counterparts—they’re just miniaturized."

So why are these dog breeds so petite? "These pups are teeny because they’ve been selectively bred for size," Vasudevan notes. Though, she says to keep this in mind if you decide to get one of these pups, they can have health issue due to their tiny nature. “Sometimes a dog's tiny size comes with a higher risk of medical issues compared to standard toy breeds," she explains.

The Pomeranian is adorably small as it is, but a teacup variety exist as well. “The Pomeranian is already a toy dog breed known for its fluffy coat and big personality,” Vasudevan says. “Teacup versions are bred to be even smaller—often under 4 pounds.” 

Like the “regular” Pomeranian, the teacup version has a sweet, puppy-like face and big personality that can be saucy at times, according to  Liza Cahn, DVM, Embrace Pet Insurance veterinarian contributor. She also cites this tiny dog breed has an irresistible “smiling” look when its relaxed. Though, like many teacup breeds, the Teacup Pomeranian has a few potential health issues to keep in mind. “Their small size means they can be prone to issues like low blood sugar, dental crowding and tracheal collapse,” Vasudevan says. “They also tend to be a bit fragile, so they’re better suited for homes without very young children.”

Chihuahuas were originally bred to be companion dogs, and that includes the teacup variety. This little pup is incredibly loyal and loves to spend time with its humans, so, expect your teeny pooch to want to snuggle up if you bring one of these cutes home with you. Yorkies are dogs under 10 pounds already, but the teacup version is smaller than your usual four to seven-pound Yorkshire Terrier. “They can be affectionate and playful, but often still have that classic terrier boldness,” Vasudevan says. While the Teacup Yorkie is teeny, it still has that sweet “old man” look that’s so endearing with the regular-sized Yorkie. This breed is very affectionate with nearly everyone that crosses its path, making it a good fit for outgoing owners. Yorkies tend to be playful, so have plenty of tiny toys at the ready for your pup.

Vasudevan calls this mini dog a “gentle companion” with a calm demeanor. “They’re typically affectionate lap dogs and do well in quiet households,” she says. 

The Maltese was originally bred to be a companion dog, and the teacup version also loves a solid snuggle. When your Teacup Maltese isn’t cuddling in your lap, this pooch will make friends with whoever is around. This breed isn’t the most high-energy, so you can expect plenty of naps together in your future.

Dachshunds are smart and sometimes stubborn, so training may take time and patience. However, these cuties are a curious breed that loves to play, giving you plenty to explore together in the future. Something to keep in mind: Dachshunds tend to think of themselves as small guard dogs, so be prepared for your pup to alert you to danger even if it’s just the mailman.

Baby otters are one of my favorite things to look at. I think they're the most precious little things in the world, because they are. Who doesn't love baby otters? That feels impossible! As if they couldn't get cuter, though, adult otters are also precious.

Recently, a couple of baby otters got to go to a swim class. They live at a nature center in California, and they have to learn the basics, which a human has been assigned to teach them. Apparently, though, swimming is exhausting, and they needed a snuggle after:

Nurtured by Nature has several different kinds of animals living at their facility in California. They work closely with the Department of Wildlife and take in animals who need help, which often means taking in some otters. They have babies from time to time, but it's mostly adults there.

Babies are a rare treat, and sisters Pearl and Sapphire are just way too cute. They most likely had some swimming instincts, but they don't have a mom to teach them how to fully swim. That's okay, though; they can still learn!

Otters Are Not Born Knowing How to Swim

Depending on the type of otter, otter pups might not even be born in the water. While sea otters typically have water births, river otters give birth in dens! Regardless, though, none of the pups know how to swim or float when they're born.

Otters are born blind. They spend about a week gaining strength, and then their mom starts giving them swimming lessons. Gradually, over about 8 weeks, they learn to survive in the water. Pearl and Sapphire officially know how to swim on their own:

Otters Can't Survive Without Swimming

Orphaned otters who aren't rescued, unfortunately, do not stand a chance. Otters are either born in the water or on the shoreline, and their main food source is in the water. So, without knowing how to swim, they can't eat.

One of the first things Nurtured By Nature teaches their baby otters is how to swim. Hand in hand with that, apparently, is teaching them how to snuggle!

If you are a parent lucky enough to live in a neighborhood where kids still run outside to play until the streetlights come on, you know how special those moments are. The sound of kids laughing through the yard, a football getting tossed around, and kids making up games together is something many families love about living in places with other children around.

One German Shepherd named Tommy recently got to experience that same kind of childhood magic when he was invited to join a group of neighborhood kids playing outside.

Ok this is just so SOO special to me. My neighbors and I were sitting on the grassy hills and our little kids were somewhere behind us. Well, random kids came and they had a baseball and football and of course my dog wanted to say hi to them. So I went over and told them his name is Tommy and he would love to run with them. They said that’s okay! He joined them as if he were a little kid as well. I have 3 dogs and worked with probably a thousand different dogs but this dog’s temperament is not from this world. When they went home they all told him goodbye and he came to me as happy as a dog can be. Now he’s deeply asleep. I wish I could clone this dog. My best boy. The adorable video, shared on the TikTok account @kellyscaninebase, shows Tommy happily running alongside a group of kids as they toss a football and play games together.

According to Tommy’s dog mom, the moment happened completely by accident.

In the caption, she explains that she and some neighbors were sitting on grassy hills nearby while their younger kids played behind them. Soon, a group of older kids showed up with a baseball and a football and started playing nearby.

Of course, Tommy wanted to say hello.

So his mom walked over and introduced him.

“I went over and told them his name is Tommy and he would love to run with them,” she wrote. “They said that’s okay.”

From that moment on, Tommy blended right into the group.

“He joined them as if he were a little kid as well.”

His mom says she has three dogs and has worked with hundreds of others over the years, but Tommy’s personality stands out even among the best.

“I have three dogs and worked with probably a thousand different dogs, but this dog’s temperament is not from this world.”

When the kids finally wrapped up their game and headed home, they even made sure to say goodbye to their newest teammate.

“When they went home, they all told him goodbye, and he came to me as happy as a dog can be.”

After all that running and excitement, Tommy apparently did what any kid would do after a long day outside.

He went home and immediately fell asleep.

People in the comments loved seeing a pooch included in the neighborhood fun.

“Glad to see a dog outside playing and not on a tablet or phone,” one person joked.

Another person was impressed with Tommy’s athletic skills.

“I’m more impressed by how the dog understood the rules of football.”

Some viewers shared similar memories from their own lives.

“I had a Golden when I lived in Florida. The kids would knock on the door and ask if Brewster could come out and play. The kids called me Brewster’s mom. Best boy I ever had. I miss him every day.”

Others joked that Tommy might need to follow the same rules as the kids.

“As long as your dog knows to come home when the streetlights come on!”

One person predicted that Tommy may have made a lifelong impression on the kids he played with.

“All of those boys will adopt a German Shepherd one day because of this.”

Another viewer added that the impact could last even longer.

“Your dog is making an impression on them, too, and at least one of them is going to grow up loving German Shepherds and having one. I’d guarantee it.”

And one commenter summed up the wholesome moment perfectly.

I just got back upstairs, and one thing is certain: We have officially hit that point in the year where an afternoon walk in Florida just might not be worth it.

After one of Cumulus' followers mentioned to his mom, @fixchix on TikTok, that she missed listening to his little whispers, she totally delivered with a video of him showing off this adorable skill.

Like she mentioned in the caption, those whispers didn't last long (eventually, Cumulus lets out a loud "hello" when he can't take it anymore) but boy, was it cute while they did!

Since so many of the skills that a Cockatoo has (as well as plenty of other birds who are able to talk) are based on what they learn from the humans around them, whether or not yours whispers is totally up to you!

Whenever my husband or I get home—whether it's been 5 minutes or 5 hours—our senior rescue dog, Franklin, retrieves one of his stuffies, chews, or toys to show us, and it's so cute, my heart can't take it! It's one of the sweetest gestures a dog can make. But why do they do this?

Our dogs don't always like to follow commands. They have their off days just like we do, and sometimes want to be left alone. There are times when they don't want to go out for their nightly bathroom break, sit down when told, or stay in one spot and can even cop an attitude.

In the TikTok from @haleyandthepets, Dunkin was snuggled in bed with his mom watching television when his mom realized the remote control was out of her reach.

"If only I had somebody to get my controller over there," Dunkin's mom hinted, pointing toward her dresser. "Maybe like a four-legged companion to go and get my controller that's sitting on top of the thingamabob."

Dunkin didn't move a muscle or look her in the eye, so his mom got a little more direct.

"Maybe his name is Dunkin Donovan Deacon," she specified, leaving no room for any misunderstanding. "And maybe he's not avoiding eye contact with me right now."

Dunkin Finally Gave In

It took a while, but Dunkin finally decided his "selective hearing" trick wasn't working and got up from his comfortable position to retrieve the remote, but not without a bit of a pout. He jumped up on the dresser and grabbed it with his mouth, but didn't get a good enough grip and dropped it.

"That was deliberate!" his mom exclaimed.

She thanked him when the frustrated fur baby brought her the remote, but Dunkin expected a reward for his hard work. He barked at his mom and refused to stop until he was compensated. She finally handed him his plush toy, so peace was quickly restored.

Followers marveled at Dunkin's intelligence, despite his less-than-thrilled demeanor when obeying his mom's command.

"Genuinely someone explain how he is understanding her like that," one posted.

Brothers can be really annoying, even adorable Maine Coon kitten brothers.

We see that here, a sweet little female orange Maine Coon is minding her own business, and her black-and-gray brother comes right over to her and pushes her into a water bowl.

It happened so fast that she was almost too confused to process it.

Another kitten sibling looks on, quite shocked as well at the series of events.

It is just a small bowl, but for this little kitten, it is almost a swimming pool.

Luckily, her mom is right there to pick her up out of the water bowl.

At this point, her brother walked off without a care in the world. In the words of Michelle Tanner, "How rude!"

Charlie Jr. the Cockatoo has a lot of big feelings, and he's lucky to have a family that allows him to feel them openly. Though his mom was the one who wanted him, Charlie much prefers his dad. He's decided she's the Spare Human, and he treats her that way.

Cockatoos Are Known to Bite

One of the main reasons I don't want a Cockatoo in my home is that I don't think I could manage them. Cockatoos need training and consistency to make good pets, which is not something most people can provide to a bird. That's why Cockatoos and parrots in general are surrendered so often.

Cockatoos are big biters, and their bites really hurt! With a bite force of up to 350PSI, a Cockatoo biting at full force can cause serious harm, so exercising caution around them is always important. They might bite because they're:

• Angry
• Annoyed
• Overtired
• Scared
• In pain

Regular interactions will help make sure your Cockatoo stays happy and tame enough to handle. They don't have to love it, but they do have to tolerate it at the very least. Like Charlie, who tolerates his mom just long enough to get to dad!

As we near the official mark of spring, it's time for new beginnings. At 37 years young, Bill suddenly decided he'd change up the morning routine for a more snuggly, cuddly, and lovable start to the day. The darling African Grey Parrot is showing us all that love is a verb and change can happen anytime, for any reason—so just do it!

This isn't a one-time thing, either. Bill is a man of structure, which means repeating a list of things he enjoys every single day until the new schedule sticks. The rescue Parrot has always been an affectionate fella, and in the two years since he joined his new family, he's only gotten sweeter.

Bill may have set the bar a little too high for Parrots, but that's what makes him so special. Generally speaking, African Greys *can* be affectionate little lovebugs, but as a whole, they don't show it as much as other birds.

These loyal, highly intelligent, social Parrots form intense, strong bonds with their humans, and their affection of choice is usually through head-scratching, preening, regular vocal interactions, and being with their humans.

As awesome as birds like Bill are, they're not exactly beginner-friendly pets—especially because they can live for up to 80 years. They require 4 to 5 hours of social interaction daily, loads of mental and emotional stimulation (puzzles, activities), and adequate time with their people to thrive. Often becoming "one-person" birds, African Grey Parrots can roast you one minute and do some version of beatboxing the next!

That said, the level of affection depends on history, personality, and environment. Bill is a total doll, and his mom is lucky to have him!

When my dogs cross paths with a cat, it doesn't take much for them to get riled up. They immediately rush toward the feline fur baby in full-on bark mode until the cat lifts a paw or lets out a hiss. Then they basically run for cover. Neither my Dachshund nor my Pug mix tries to prolong the interaction — they immediately get the message to leave the kitty alone.

Apparently, Maple the Golden Retriever doesn't pick up on social cues from her feline brother, Waffles. The canine cutie tries to engage him even when he's clearly telling her to back off.

In the TikTok from @thegoldenbreakfastclub, Maple was trying to get some sort of game going with Waffles, but the pretty kitty wasn't having it. He let Maple know through hisses and paw swipes that he wasn't in the mood for her antics.

"Ways our Golden Retriever accidentally rage baits our cat," the onscreen text read, followed by a montage of animated interactions between the siblings.

First, Maple gyrated her body on the couch in Waffles' direction to get a reaction — and she got one.

Next, the gorgeous Golden followed Waffles around, trailing his every move. Needless to say, the feline got frustrated.

Then, Maple got close to Waffles and looked at him with "too much love". The cat made it clear with more loud meows and paw swats that he wanted to be left alone.

Maple Was Undeterred

Most dogs probably would have given up on getting close to their fur baby sibling, but not Maple. She hovered over Waffles while he tried to nap, sniffed him when he climbed a chair, and made direct eye contact when possible. Maple kept on trying even though Waffles refused to be won over.

Followers got a kick out of the pair and noted the trademark behavior between siblings.

"They are both SOOO dramatic in such different ways!" one pointed out.

"Maple is that sibling that pushes buttons," another remarked.

"I’m sorry but Maple is straight up rage baiting him," a follower posted.

"I love her endless optimism," someone noted of Maple.

Over the years, I've learned the hard way that when a puppy suddenly goes quiet, it usually means trouble somewhere. But when F1 journalist Christian Hewgill's Golden Retriever Puppy, Derek, went silent, the surprise waiting in the bathroom turned out to be pretty adorable.

After Hewgill's fiancé briefly left the shower running to warm up and grab a towel, Derek decided the open invitation was too good to pass up. The curious pup hopped right in and turned the stream into his very own splash zone. And the cuteness does not disappoint.

On the bright side, Derek clearly doesn't have any issues with bath time. The happy little dance he does while trying to catch the shower stream makes it nearly impossible not to smile.

And as far as puppy mischief goes, this one really isn't too bad. At least Derek didn't sneak outside to roll in the mud first thing in the morning. There's always a bright side, right?

According to the American Kennel Club, Golden Retrievers were originally bred as sporting dogs to retrieve waterfowl for hunters, which meant swimming through lakes and wetlands to bring birds back to their handlers. Because of that background, many Goldens naturally take to water, whether it's a lake, a backyard pool, or even a running shower.

That instinct can show up early in puppyhood when curiosity takes over. In Derek's case, it simply turned into a very enthusiastic shower break.

And if he's this excited about bath time now, I have a feeling his family won't have much trouble getting him clean as he grows up.
