Golden Retrievers are very dramatic dogs. They're considered one of the best dog breeds ever, basically, but they're not easy by any means. To love one, you have to love drama and a little bit of an attitude problem.

Millie the Red Golden Retriever is perfect in every way. Her red fur basically matches the firetruck she's howling after, so it makes sense that her strong howl blends in so well! Her mom couldn't have been prouder. She did so well at not dropping her stuffie!

Having a stuffed animal in her mouth might seem like it would muffle the sound of her howl, but it doesn't. Not at all! In fact, it almost sounds like it's much cleaner and louder than when she howls without it.

There's nothing as sweet as a sleepy Dachshund, is there?

In the video, we see influencer Abby Baffoe trying to wake up her Dachshund, Lady, and this little pup is very slow to come out of dreamland.

Baffoe asks if it's normal that she actually has to wake her dog up.

Isn't it usually the opposite for most dogs and their parents?

But not for this little pooch, who Baffoe compares to a dead noodle as she lifts her up from her nap.

Poor Lady does have a little cast on one of her paws after hurting a nail, but it sounds like even without an injury, she is often quite sleepy.

As Lady yawns a bit more, her mom says, "It's a hard life not paying rent, doing chores, etc.,"

Why Some Dogs Just Love To Sleep In

To answer Baffoe's question: Is it normal for the dog to sleep this much? The answer is yes (most of the time).

First of all, dogs love to conserve their energy. Yes, compared to their ancestors, who hunted to survive and slept in caves, their lives seem pretty stress-free, being fed on a schedule and carried around in designer bags when they don't feel like walking.

However, that instinct to rest and recharge their bodies is very much in their bodies.

Now, if they have had a busy day of running around and playing, they definitely need a good nap, but they may also just be sleeping because they're bored.

Or perhaps it is a cold, rainy day or snowy day, and they want to get cozy, just like humans do.

If they're a puppy or a senior dog, they will also sleep more.

On a more serious note, if your pup is suddenly sleeping more, they may not be feeling well, and you should consult your vet.

Dachshunds normally sleep about 12 to 14 hours a day, so Lady, the sleepy Dachshund, refusing to wake up, is completely normal.

Borzois are not typically considered loud or overly vocal dogs. In fact, they're often described as quiet and fairly reserved compared to many other breeds.

Maine Coons are notorious for being huge. Even still, though, there are some who are bigger than others! Some of them are so big that it's genuinely mindblowing: how does a cat even get to be that big? How is that even physically possible?

He looks like a very, very sweet boy. I just know he gives the best hugs ever, and that he's a lot of fun to snuggle, even if he's so big it's a little terrifying. Maine Coons are big, but most of them are not this big!

He's not just really long, though: he's super fluffy. That helps make him look even more intimidating. He just looks like a big black cloud, ready and waiting to pounce. When he pounces, though, it's all love. He wouldn't hurt a fly, despite looking like he could take down a herd of elephants all by himself.

I'm obsessed with him. I have three dogs, and they're not exactly small, but they're nowhere near the size of Zeus. If he were a dog, I think he'd be a Newfoundland.

What Is a Typical Maine Coon's Size?

Zeus is stunning, but his size is definitely not the norm. He's really big! Typically, when a Maine Coon is that big, they're a full-grown male. Females are usually smaller.

A standard European Maine Coon typically weigh between 16 and 25 pounds, with male cats on the larger end of the scale. They stand about 24 inches tall at the shoulder, and can be up to 40 inches long, or longer in some extreme cases.

That is the image behind this year's Slumber Pawty, a nationwide overnight event that pulled in more than $1.6 million from nearly 19,000 donations for 98 animal welfare organizations across the country. But the impressive numbers are almost beside the point.

One Night That Looks Different

In the video posted on YouTube, volunteers are tucked under blankets, dogs pressed against them, heavy and still. Not performing for visitors. Not pacing. Just resting, the way dogs rest when they finally feel safe enough to let go.

Shelter life is loud by design. Even the best-run facilities carry a constant undercurrent of stress, barking that echoes off concrete, strangers moving through, the absence of routine. Many dogs never fully decompress. Some won't sleep deeply for days at a stretch.

But put a person beside them, and something shifts.

Heart rate drops. Breathing slows. Some dogs fall into a deeper sleep within minutes of contact. Staff at overnight programs have watched it happen again and again. It is not complicated. It is just proximity. The same reason your dog finds you in the dark and presses against your leg.

Now picture a dog that hasn't had that in weeks.

What $1.6 Million Actually Buys

The campaign by Project Bella took place on April 18, and the footage is still rolling in from shelters across the country. The donations will help cover operational costs, food, medical care, staffing and the infrastructure that keeps shelters running.

That part matters enormously.

But the volunteers lying on kennel floors aren't thinking about operational budgets. They're thinking about the dog beside them. The one who took an hour to settle, and then didn't move until morning.

The Thing That Carries Over

Dogs that decompress, even briefly, show differently the next day. Calmer. More themselves. Easier for a potential adopter to actually meet.

One night of rest doesn't fix everything, but it breaks a cycle, and a dog that feels seen, even once, carries that into the next day.

That is what this event gives beyond the fundraising total. A break from waiting. For one night, these dogs are not being evaluated. They are not hoping to be chosen.

They already have someone there. The next time you see a volunteer at a local shelter event, consider that they might be the person who spent their Friday night on a kennel floor. Not because anyone asked them to, but because they knew that mattered.

It wasn't long ago (March 21) that 12-year-old Brady lost his 9-year-old brother, Graffiti, to cancer. It came on quickly and took a toll on the whole family, who are still grieving the space the sweet boy left. Gecko Emmy seems to know exactly what her feathered friends need, and they're so lucky to have her. She wants them to be as happy as they could possibly be, and she makes it happen. In a world where so many birds are mistreated, it's so nice to see beautiful birds being treated with respect!

The African Grey who lost his best friend's name is Jake, and ever since the loss, he's been having a little bit of a hard time. His mom tries her best to keep him happy, but not even she can replace true companionship.

That's where the second African Grey, Teka, comes in. Emmy has known Teka and her family for a long time, but they couldn't care for her anymore, so she stepped up to take her in! She hoped Teka could help Jake on his healing journey, but she wasn't sure. Birds can be picky.

However, Jake and Teka really hit it off! Thank goodness. While they might not end up living in the same cage, hopefully they'll continue to bond and play together. You can see some more of Teka's story here:

For now, her and Jake will be spending most of their time together out in the aviary. It's best to introduce birds in a neutral space before they meet closer to their homes: it just helps them feel more secure. They need to know the other bird isn't a threat.

How Do Birds Grieve Loss?

Jake is very lucky: his mom managed to find him a new partner after he lost his first one. It took a while, but it seems like it was meant to be!

After an African Grey Parrot loses their mate, you'll most likely notice signs that they're grieving. These might include:

• Restlessness
• Aggression
• Refusal to eat
• Feather plucking or beak grinding
• Lethargy

The first few weeks or months after they lose their friend will be the worst. All you can do is try to keep them occupied and keep them from falling too deep into depression; in time, you might be able to introduce them to another friend! I hope Jake and Teka live a long and happy life together!

How Often Do Dogs Actually Need Professional Cleanings?

Once a year, for most adult dogs. That is the standard, and it holds across breeds and sizes with some exceptions.

Dr. Feargus McConnell, a veterinarian registered in Colorado, puts it plainly: once a year is the right default for most owners. For larger breeds, pet parents can stretch that timeline to 18 months. However, small dog breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers, dachshunds, and similar need cleanings once every six months.

There is a simple reason why these small dogs need more frequent cleaning. Their teeth are crowded into jaws that were not designed to accommodate them, which speeds up the accumulation of tartar and the development of disease.

A professional cleaning involves more than a scrub. Dr. Stephanie Liff, DVM, of Pure Paws Veterinary Care in New York City, describes the entire process. It starts with a general anesthesia, after which your veterinarian will examine the surface of every tooth, probe gum pockets for tissue that is not firmly attached, and perform a full dental X-Ray scan to check what is happening below the gumline.

After that, the dog's teeth are scaled, polished, and your vet will provide any additional care if needed.

None of that is possible without anesthesia. A dog that is awake cannot hold still for gum probing or intraoral X-rays, and attempting it creates a real risk of injury.

Any "cleaning" that does not involve anesthesia is surface-only. That means vets can only remove visible buildup but cannot assess or treat what is happening below the gumline, where disease actually develops.

Here is something most pet parents ignore. By the time you can smell your dog's breath from across the room, you are already behind. Dental disease destroys gums and bone for months before the obvious signs appear.

What Are the Risks of Skipping Dental Care?

According to Dr. McConnell, by age 3, almost 80 percent of dogs show signs of periodontal disease. The worst part is that most parents have no idea it is happening. Unlike humans, dogs do not show pain. They will continue eating and wagging their tail. Underneath it all, the disease keeps progressing.

Plaque hardens into tartar, calcified deposits that cannot be removed with brushing, in as little as 24 to 72 hours, according to Dr. Liff. Once that happens, the only thing that removes it is the ultrasonic scaler used in a professional cleaning.

Without treatment, plaque and tartar can lead to gingivitis, then periodontal disease and eventually bone loss and tooth loss. Eventually, if you continue to ignore it, it could lead to something worse.

Often, bacteria in an unhealthy mouth don't stay in the same place. Instead, it can enter the bloodstream and result in conditions like kidney disease, heart disease, and liver damage. Skipping dental care is not a cosmetic decision.

And then there is the pain. Dr. McConnell is direct about this: dogs with advanced dental disease are living with chronic, significant pain. They are stoic about it in a way that makes it easy to miss. Most parents will not notice anything is wrong. But that silence is not the same as being fine.

How Much Does a Dog's Teeth Cleaning Cost?

A routine professional cleaning, including anesthesia, oral exam, scaling and polishing, can cost between $300 and $700 at most general-practice veterinary clinics.

Your location matters as well. In a small Midwestern town, you might pay $350 for a general cleaning, but in cities like Los Angeles and New York, the price can reach $550. Urban clinics typically charge 20 to 40 percent more than rural practices.

Other factors can push the price up as well. Extractions and advanced dental procedures performed by a board-certified veterinary dental specialist can push the total to $1,500 or more.

The good news is you can reduce the price. February is National Pet Dental Health Month, and many clinics offer discounts. Some shelter-affiliated clinics offer lower-cost cleanings.

What Are the Signs Your Dog Needs a Cleaning?

Dr. Liff mentions the obvious ones, including dropping food while eating, bad breath, difficulty chewing, or pulling back from things your dog normally enjoys, like chasing a ball or tugging a toy. Dr. McConnell adds: red or swollen gums, yellow or brown tartar you can see, pawing at the mouth, drooling more than usual, or a sudden preference for soft food.

But the less obvious matters more. If your dog has facial swelling, nasal discharge, or bleeding from the mouth or nose, do not book a cleaning. Call your vet that day. Those signs indicate a disease that has already moved well past what a routine appointment addresses.

One of the most useful things you can do at home takes about five seconds: run your finger along your dog's gumline. Healthy gums are pink and firm. If they are red, puffy, or bleed when you touch them, that is not something to monitor. That is a call to the vet.

Dr. Liff also flags something most owners do not connect to dental pain: visible wear or fractures on the teeth themselves. The most common cause of dental fractures is hard chew toys, yak chews, bully sticks, marrow bones and antlers. She has a simple rule you should follow: if you cannot make a dent in it with your thumbnail, it is too hard for your dog's teeth.

Can You Clean Your Dog's Teeth at Home?

Yes, and you should. But home care and professional care are doing different jobs.

Daily brushing is the single most effective home intervention for canine oral health. Dr. McConnell is honest about what that means in practice: brushing once a week, or once a month, probably does nothing meaningful. The goal is daily. A realistic target for most pet parents is three times a week. If you are below that, you are not preventing much.

Always use a dog-specific toothpaste for brushing. Human toothpaste contains xylitol, a toxic ingredient for pets. Enzymatic toothpastes work by dissolving plaque rather than just scrubbing it off. A finger toothbrush or soft gauze pad works well for technique. The goal is to hit as many surfaces as possible, and most dogs tolerate these better than a traditional brush.

But here is something you probably do not want to hear: brushing does not remove tartar once it has calcified onto the tooth surface. That requires an ultrasonic scaler. No amount of home brushing undoes hardened deposits.

Home care slows the accumulation of new plaque. Professional cleanings remove what has already hardened and assess what is happening below the gumline. They are not substitutes for each other.

Dental chews and water additives have some supporting evidence, but Dr. McConnell has an honest view of them: think of them like mouthwash or chewing gum. Useful. Not sufficient.

Start home care as early as possible. If your dog is already an adult and you have not started, begin now. If you have a puppy, start before the habit feels optional.

Not in a vague, maybe-that-counted kind of way. Impossible.

And maybe this is why the clip works so well. It hits that exact dog-parent nerve where you are always a little convinced your dog understands everything, but then you don't say it out loud because you don't want to sound unwell. I always swear that my dog Lola understands me, too, but this is next-level. Wally is over here making a very strong case for full conversational status.

It's also not surprising to see a pup on a luxury shopping spree.

After all, the global luxury pet accessories market was valued at $4 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $6.7 billion by 2033, according to data from Market.us.

In 2024 alone, Americans spent roughly $152  billion on pet-related items and services, and this figure includes “new essentials,” such as dog clothing and accessories.

This all fits in perfectly with the upcoming release of the highly anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2.

The highly anticipated sequel, which comes out on May 1, brings back most of the original cast, including Oscar winners Streep and Hathaway, as well as Oscar nominees Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

One of the most interesting things about humans, to me, is how we all choose to spend our money. I invest in a lot of lotions, perfumes, and other things that smell good. Some people like to buy cars.

Others, apparently, spend $10 million on a horse. It might sound crazy, but in their defense, this $10 million horse is one of the most handsome animals I've ever seen! He knows it, too. Just look at him prancing around the auction:

This isn't Sara's horse; she was there showing her own horse, though. This was at the Ocala Breeder's Sales: this horse is about 2 years old, and he's already pure muscle. He's in incredible physical condition, and beyond that, he's absolutely beautiful.

He doesn't have a name yet, known only as Hip 1056. He was purchased for $10.5 million by Zedan Racing, which is a well-known stable company in the horse racing circuit. They're based in Lexington, Kentucky, so this handsome horse will likely be traveling quite a way to his new home.

Why Was Hip 1056 Worth So Much?

I can think of approximately 10.5 million things I would spend $10.5 million on before a horse, but the idea that a horse was worth that much is amazing to me. Hip 1056 was worth the hefty price tag because he's:

• The first-born son of Flightline, another racehorse who recently retired undefeated.
• A descendant of Secretariat, who's probably the best-known racehorse ever.
• Already showing incredible potential, according to his new caretakers.

Bob Baffert, who purchased Hip 1056 on behalf of Zedan Racing, is a six-time Kentucky Derby champion. Essentially, they're paying that much for the potential that they could have the next big racehorse on their hands, since he's the equine equivalent of a nepo-baby.

Lots of Horses Are Descendants of Secretariat

These days, finding a horse who's related to Secretariat is not difficult. Secretariat was born in 1970 and had a 16-month racing career, spanning from 1972 to 1973. After winning the Triple Crown Trophy as well as American Horse of the Year, he retired from racing and instead had a long breeding career.

Secretariat sired almost 700 foals. There is no exact number of his descendants, but there are a lot of them: every single horse who raced in the 2025 Kentucky Derby was a descendant of Secretariat. Does that mean the Kentucky Derby is one big family reunion?

Being that Hip 1056 is two years old now, we should see him begin taking to the track in an official capacity soon. I hope he has a good run and then lives a long, healthy life afterward!

There's something about a post-surgery pet that makes you feel equal parts protective and… slightly caught off guard. Because you're expecting “a little different,” not a full identity shift that has you doing a double take and then quietly apologizing to your cat.

This little, flat-faced cat delivers exactly that moment. One second, you're looking at a perfectly normal body, and the next, you're trying to process a haircut that makes him look like a bunny who had brain surgery.

The clip was shared on Instagram by @vet_lauren_, and as the caption puts it, “This is the worst post-surgery haircut I have ever seen.” The top of the cat’s head is shaved, leaving him with a look that's somehow both very serious and completely ridiculous at the same time.

The expression doesn't help. He looks deeply concerned. Slightly alarmed. Like he's aware something has happened, but isn't entirely sure what or why.

People in the comments didn't hold back. “Was the surgery to remove his brain?” one person joked, which feels harsh but also very internet. Another said, “That’s the fishiest cat I’ve ever seen. His eyes look like catfish eyes,” which is oddly specific, but somehow still lands.

Others were a little more sympathetic. “He’s bald, and I laughed so hard. Poor baby, I hope his recovery is smooth!” one commenter wrote, which is probably the most accurate emotional response. You feel bad… but you are also laughing.

One person admitted, “Somehow I didn’t notice the haircut at first. Then I looked in the mirror to see if I had the same procedure done,” which is honestly impressive. And then there was, “Bro got derp sauce on his face, too,” which really rounds out the tone here.

The reality is, post-surgery haircuts are not about looks. They are about access, cleanliness, and helping vets do what they need to do safely. But every once in a while, you end up with a look that feels… memorable.

After surgery, your cat will need a calm and comfortable space to recover. Keeping them in a quiet area away from noise and activity can help reduce stress and support healing.

It's important to follow your veterinarian’s instructions closely, especially when it comes to medications, feeding, and activity levels. Some kitties may need to limit jumping or running for a period of time.

You will also want to monitor the surgical site for any signs of redness, swelling, or discharge. If anything looks unusual or your cat seems uncomfortable, it's best to contact your vet.

Using an e-collar or protective clothing can help prevent your cat from licking or irritating the area while it heals. It may not be their favorite accessory, but it plays an important role in recovery.

Most importantly, give your pet time. They may seem a little off or different at first, but with rest and care, they usually return to their normal selves quickly… even if the haircut takes a little longer to grow out.

After gathering a few random tools, the officer lures the alligator closer. He does not flinch as the alligator clamps down with its jaw. Once the alligator closes its mouth, the officer rapidly wraps his hands around its snout.

Experts suggest remaining calm if you encounter an alligator and staying at least 20 feet away from the animal. Slowly back away, but if the alligator charges, your safest option is to run in a straight line, as alligators tire quickly.
