Bambi the Miniature Dachshund is a wonderful example of this loving behavior, as she stepped up to serve as a foster mom to some baby ducklings found nearby.

In the TikTok from @bambitheweenie, the doting Doxie sat at the kitchen table and stared at the baby ducklings to make sure they were safe. The video explained the strong connection between the two species.

"We saved ducklings and they bonded to our Mini Dachshund," the onscreen text shared.

Another scene featured Bambi running in the grass with the two ducklings following close behind. She stopped to check on the precious pair and barked, probably giving them some sort of motherly directive. Wherever Bambi went, the baby ducks trailed her every move.

Followers marveled at the sweet bond between the Dachshund and the ducklings, with some suggesting it as a book idea.

"This is the cutest thing ever!! The faster the dog goes, the faster the little ducks go!" one pointed out.

Casper the Cockatoo is 21 years old, and according to his mom, he's holding her hostage. I believe it! At least he's the cutest captor of all time. In this video, he was performing a nice interpretive dance for the dishes in the sink. Free front row seats! I'm so jealous!

Casper is always doing something. He has a cage, which is where he sleeps, but he doesn't spend much time in it during the day. He prefers to be where his favorite people are, and lucky for him, they love to have him there!

Casper is a rescue, and being in a loving home has turned him into a little bit of a prince. These days, he loves:

• Cuddling with mom.

Cockatoos Love to Dance

Cockatoos are funny birds, and they're very energetic. It will be incredibly hard for you to find one who will sit still, even for short periods. They love to be bouncing around, and with or without music, Cockatoos love to dance.

Putting on music for them is a good way to entertain your Cockatoo while you're busy doing something else, and it'll encourage them to use some of their excess energy! If you play a certain song long enough, they might even learn the words.

When dogs set their mind to something, they truly go all in. I often wish I could harness that same determination. My own 29-pound Rescue Dog certainly shows it whenever she decides she wants something.

Now imagine that level of determination in a dog the size of a Great Dane.

For Riggs, the mission was simple: pounce on the ice until he could get a cool drink of water. It didn’t happen right away. But that didn’t stop him. Again and again, he bounced across the frozen surface, testing the ice with every playful stomp.

And eventually, persistence paid off.

Riggs is redefining what it means to work toward a breakthrough. And he certainly put in the effort. Even if his nails weren’t much help against the frozen surface, he used his size and strength to keep at it. Each playful bounce packed just enough force to weaken the ice until, finally, he found the perfect spot and broke through for a drink.

Great Danes Are Known for Their Massive Size and Gentle Personality

The Great Dane is one of the largest dog breeds in the world, often standing up to 32 inches tall at the shoulder. Despite their towering size, these dogs are widely known for their affectionate and gentle nature.

According to the American Kennel Club, Great Danes are often called “gentle giants” because of their friendly temperament and devoted bond with their families. While their size can make their playful antics look a bit dramatic, their personalities are typically calm, loyal, and eager to please.

Moments like these are a perfect glimpse into the personality that makes the Great Dane such a beloved family dog. Despite their enormous size, the breed’s playful curiosity and determination prove that even the world’s tallest dog breeds can still act like joyful, goofy pups at heart.

No matter what's going on in life, it's important to have something you love to do, see, or listen to. This mandatory form of self-care can be anything from taking a three-hour hike or hobnobbing with fellow horror fanatics at the local con.

For Furby, the fun-loving Cockatoo, it's watching Hamilton over and over and over! I'm not talking about watching like any casual observer who's sort of into the musical. I mean, you've never seen a bird so beyond thrilled for his Hamilton time—and he even sings along!

I've never been one to get into theater productions or musicals of any kind, but after watching Furby's pure joy over Hamilton, I'm rethinking my choices. The sweet and vocal Cockatoo watches his favorite performances nearly every day, jumping and shouting right along with the cast like the most obsessed fangirl in history! This is proof that music heals all.

As one of the more than 20 Parrot species, Cockatoos, in particular, are prone to developing a strong interest in music and songs for their rhythmic beats. It's a big world for Thumper, a Miniature Dachshund puppy, and the joyful enthusiasm he has for his very first walk on the leash is the kind of energy we all need. Leash Training 101

Many people assume dogs naturally know how to walk politely on a leash, but it’s actually a learned skill. Leash walking is a human expectation, not something dogs instinctively understand, which is why a little training goes a long way toward making daily walks more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Leashes are important for safety and are required in many public places, but they also give dogs the opportunity to explore the world alongside their humans. A dog that feels comfortable on a leash is less likely to develop stress or frustration while walking, which can sometimes lead to behaviors like pulling, lunging, or barking.

The key to successful leash training starts with positive associations. Begin by letting your dog get used to wearing a collar or harness and leash during relaxed moments at home. Pair the experience with treats, praise, and playtime so your dog learns that leash time means good things are about to happen.

Next, introduce a simple cue or marker, such as a clicker, a sound, or a word like “yes,” that tells your dog they’ve done something right. Fallen Oak Farms is such a cool place! They host events in a beautiful greenhouse venue, and they have a whole herd of Nigerian Dwarf Goats. The goats are there to serve as therapy animals. They're so precious! Most of the time, they just get to play.

This little girl's name is Onyx. She has a bunch of siblings, including one named Sapphire, though she doesn't have Onyx's adorable heart nose. In this video, she's also wearing a heart sweater: he mom puts it on her on special occasions!

Do Baby Goats Need Sweaters?

Newborn baby goats might benefit from a sweater, especially if they were born in the colder months. It will help them stay warm, though a sweater isn't a substitute for time with mom or, if they're still super young, a heat lamp.

By the time they're a few days old, baby goats should be healthy and strong enough to retain body heat on their own. Sweaters can still be a part of their lives, of course, but they're purely for decoration.

How to Choose a Sweater for a Goat

If you feel like your goat needs a sweater, you're probably right. However, if you want them to have a good experience in their sweater, it's very important that you make sure it fits well. There are a few things to look for:

• It shouldn't cover their back-sides or back legs at all.
• You should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and their neck.
• It should be fitted to their body, but not too tight.

Choosing the right sweater will help make sure that your goat enjoys wearing their sweater. That'll mean they can keep it on for longer!

How Easy Is It To Train a Golden Retriever?

Seeing a pet gain a new skill is exciting. Whether it's giving you a paw or rolling over, your pup doing a trick fills your heart with joy and pride. Some dogs are more open to learning than others.

Brew makes it seem like training a Golden Retriever would be a breeze. But, according to experts, while Goldens are a breed eager to please, they can be more challenging to train. It turns out, these beauties can have a stubborn streak. They can also get distracted by wanting to go play with another dog or their favorite human. Who can blame them?

Of course, as with all breeds, training should be individualized to fit your pet's personality and your lifestyle.

Anyone who has spent time around Maine Coon cats knows they tend to have very big personalities to go along with their very big bodies. And one shelter lobby cat named Monster seems determined to show every single visitor exactly what that personality looks like.

In the video, Monster sits proudly in the lobby like he runs the place, which he probably does. As someone walks past him, the giant Orange Cat casually reaches out and gives them a quick swat, like he’s reminding everyone who is really in charge.

But seconds later, Monster switches personalities entirely.

The contrast between “slappy chaos goblin” and “gentle reading buddy” is honestly impressive.

There’s only one comment on the video so far, but it perfectly captures Monster’s potential.

Some animal shelters have what people lovingly call “resident cats.” These are kitties who staff members fall especially in love with and decide to keep around the facility to greet visitors and help show off how wonderful cats can be.

Lobby cats like Monster often help new visitors feel welcome and can even encourage potential adopters to spend more time interacting with the animals. Sometimes they are simply cats whose personalities make them perfect unofficial greeters.

Of course, having a big, confident Maine Coon like Monster in the lobby probably makes the shelter feel like it has its own slightly chaotic mascot.

Speaking of chaotic cats, my own Maine Coon, Meatball, is a master of the classic “belly trap.”

Every once in a while, he rolls onto his back looking extremely soft and fluffy, with his giant, floofy stomach fully on display like he’s inviting pets.

It looks adorable and irresistible.

But the second I actually reach down and touch the belly, he immediately grabs my arm with both paws, digs in his claws, and bunny kicks like he’s fighting off a predator in the wild.

So if Monster occasionally switches between sweet angel and surprise slap machine, honestly, that just sounds like extremely normal Maine Coon behavior.

In the TikTok from @bettyandherboots, Betty literally had a smile on her face as she scurried around the room, wagging her tail nonstop. There was a very good reason for her excitement.

"Today our rescue dog got a prosthetic leg and we saw her jump for the first time," the onscreen text explained.

Betty's joy was palpable as she finally experienced having four working limbs. She literally couldn't contain her joy and jumped up in delight.

"I've never seen her jump into the air!" her mom exclaimed. "I think she's excited!"

The caption shared more of Betty's story and why this new limb was a game-changer for the fur baby.

Wasatch Wildtail Maine Coons are all so beautiful, but this boy can't possibly be beat. His name is Valor, and he's one of many Maine Coons at the cattery! The way his coat almost glows means he's a Silver Smoke Maine Coon.

That means his fur is darker at the base, but as the pigment travels up the fur, it gets lighter, with the tips being nearly white. It's a pretty uncommon coat color, but it is so gorgeous! He was recently the father of a litter of kittens, and all of them are as beautiful as he is!

They were born in January, but Valor is not their mom, so he's mostly excused from raising the babies. Instead, he likes to go on walks and show off his epic, super fluffy tail:

His tail is literally bigger than he is. That's one of the main things I love about these cats: if you're ever in dire need of a feather duster, just pick up one of these cats, and you're good to go!

Most Common Cat Eye Colors

Valor's green eyes are perfect in every way, but they're not super uncommon. Green eyes occur in as much as 15% of the total cat population; they're not the most uncommon color (that's copper), but you won't be hard-pressed to find one.

The most common cat eye colors are:

• Yellow
• Gold
• Amber

Certain breeds have different common eye colors, too. Ragdoll cats only have blue eyes, and most white cats also have blue eyes. Valor's babies' eyes are all that perfect shade of kitten blue right now, but I hope someone will grow to have his eyes in time!

When adopting a rescue pet, you never really know the full breadth of their temperament or personality until they've had a chance to settle in. Sometimes, it's a pleasant surprise to see how seamlessly they become a beloved family member, but other times, it's a roller coaster of chaos. For the vocal birds who don't trust their new surroundings, pet parents may be in for a series of tests!

Harley, the rescue Parrot, gave his new mom exactly that and then some. Even after a week in his new, safe home, he's going off on Mom with a passionate rant filled with insults, demands, and an epic toddler tantrum. Beware: He's got the mouth of a trucker!

In Harley's defense, he's even more adorable while slinging some of the funniest insults and "horrible names" known to man (or bird). Between throwing his bowl and demanding "[expletive]" fruit, the evil laugh, or his motivational mudslinging, Harley is in a league of his own.

Honestly, I've watched this clip a few times now, and the "you're [expletive] fat," followed by mom repeating it back and his reply as "RUDE," is sending me! One fan took the words right out of my mouth, writing, "He's got a bad attitude. I really like him."

Rescuing birds like Harley isn't the same as bringing home a shelter dog or cat who typically adjust using the 3-3-3 rule—3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn a routine, and 3 months to feel like family—but they'll still follow the general guidelines.

These highly intelligent birds require extreme patience if they're ever going to adjust. It has to be on their terms or not at all. To help the process, make sure they have a stable, safe, and quiet environment by putting their cage in a low-traffic area with a cover.

Don't force interactions with Parrots by handling them right away, but sitting near the cage or being around them for the first 72 hours helps them adjust to a new parent's presence.

Routines, consistency, and again—patience—will show the new addition that everything will be OK. Hopefully, Harley understands he's home soon enough, but in the meantime, Mom noted he inspired her to go on a diet with his hilariously targeted roast!

"Seeing your dog feel completely at peace with you is heartwarming," says Shir Limazati, CPDT- KA, of Another Chance Training. "Some would say that it’s even therapeutic." However, Limazati says knowing the signs that your dog feels at ease with you goes beyond the warm and fuzzies—it can give you clues on their physical and mental health as well. "When a dog feels at peace with their human, it also means they fully trust you," Limazati explains. "You are their safe space. Their nervous system is able to fully relax when you are with them.  A dog feeling content with you leads to them having the confidence to explore their world around them. When your dog is at peace with you, it’s a result of what trainers refer to as regulated attachment. Which is a beautiful goal to achieve."

Limazati says that when you notice signs that your dog feels safe with you consistently, the meaning is profound. "You are a key witness to what trust looks like in action," Limazati says. "This type of peace is something your dog builds over time as they learn that you are their entire world—as they are yours." Swooning already? 1. They yawn when you yawn

Have you noticed your dog yawning when you yawn? According to Limazati, this mirroring behavior is a strong sign that your dog considers you one of the most loving people in their life. "Yawning is very contagious," Limazati says. "When your dog yawns after watching you yawn, this is a signal that they are emotionally connected to you. They are fully relaxed.  When your dog feels safe enough to participate in mirroring you, that is a clear indication that they fully trust you and feel at peace around you."

Importantly, not all yawns are a sign your dog is relaxed around you. In fact, sometimes, your dog is letting you know that they are stressed or anxious. "If your dog’s body language is soft and relaxed and the environment is calm, they are mirroring you, and they are at peace," Limazati clarifies. "If their body is stiff, they are looking away, maybe licking their lips and there are stressors in their space, their yawn may instead be a coping tool."

2. They sigh near you

Another sign your dog feels content? While you may find your dog's sighs to be sweet and silly, they are actually a sign your dog feels completely relaxed with you. "We all love that sound, and it almost always makes us smile," Limazati shares. "Sometimes, it becomes an inside joke when we hear them let out a sigh.

Jokes aside, Limazati reveals that dogs actually sigh to regulate their nervous system. "It’s a form of release," Limazati explains. "When your dog sighs in your presence, that means they feel safe enough with you that they can let their guard down and fully decompress. They are at their most relaxed state."

In fact, Limazati shares that one of the most obvious signs your dog trusts you is that they sigh deeply as they sink their body into a bed right next to you.

3. They rest their head on your lap

You may be wonderng, "How do I know if my dog is calm and happy?" Well, Limazati reports that dogs aren't just showing love when they rest their heads on your lap, it's actually a sign they feel at ease around you and comfortable. "Resting their head on your body is a gesture of vulnerability," Limazati says. "That’s what we as trainers consider a quiet connection."

Sometimes, families will ask her whether lap-naps are attention-seeking."It is not," Limazati reports. "It is your dog saying, 'I feel safe with you. I feel connected to you. I feel at peace with you.'"

4. They stay close to you in unfamiliar environments

Limazati often looks for this behavior when working with families because it’s a sign a dog has a secure attachment with their owner or family members. "When your dog uses you as their check-in point, especially when things feel uncertain, this behavior can be a sure sign they are at peace and fully bonded with you," Limazati explains.

That said, context matters, and this dog behavior isn’t always a sign that your dog feels relaxed or happy around you. Limazati adds that it could indicate your dog needs help building confidence and independence, especially if they tremble, hide behind you, or appear anxious in unfamiliar environments. Understanding your dog’s body language and attachment behaviors can help you ensure they feel safe, secure, and emotionally connected.

5. They settle and remain calm when you leave

You may not notice this sign that your dog feels comfortable around you unless you have a pet camera to see if they can be relaxed and calm when you leave your house. "Dogs who have built a strong connection with their human have also, in tandem, built independence," Limazati says. "One of the telltale signs you have built this type of strong relationship is that your dog is at ease when you leave them."

Don't get it twisted, though: "Of course they miss you, but they know you’ll be back," Limazati adds. "They are able to self-soothe and relax even when you are not in their presence because you have built predictability in their routine and they trust you’ll return home."

6. They greet you happily and without panic

Dogs who feel secure even when you leave them alone are still head over heels happy when you get home. But dogs who are at peace with you have their own "breed" of excitement. "A dog that is at peace with you will always be excited to see you when you get home," Limazati says. "The key here is that the greeting is excited, but not frantic."

Limazati reports that heavy panting, excessive jumping, pacing, loud barks and warning can be signs of anxiety or stress. However, happy tail wags, leaning, rolling on their back or doing figure-8s through your legs are healthy dog behavior to watch for when you return home. "Those are signs your dog is experiencing pure joy that their human is back," Limazati says. "That is a healthy emotional response. It shows they are at peace around you."

7. They ask you to play with them

Often, dogs will come bearing their favorite toy when they are around someone they feel happy and comfortable with. "When your dog brings you their toy, not only are they asking for play, they’re asking for engagement and interaction," Limazati says. "They’re communicating. When your dog asks for cooperative play, that means they feel safe with you."

Limazati knows play can be vulnerable and challenging for some dogs, and stressed dogs may not want to play at all (especially not with someone else). "Your dog asking you and initiating that interaction is a clear sign of feeling at peace with you," Limazati says. 

8. They sleep deeply in your presence

Your dog's sleep habits can reveal a lot about your bond, including whether they feel safe, relaxed, and at peace with you. “As a trainer, this is one of the clearest signs a dog feels at peace and emotionally connected with their owner,” Limazati states.

Signs your dog is in a deep, calm sleep include leg twitching, a belly that’s exposed, and even some gentle snoring. “This shows that your dog’s nervous system feels safe enough to fully relax,” Limazati explains. “Sleep is the ultimate display of vulnerability in dogs, and a dog cannot allow themselves to rest deeply unless they feel secure, comfortable, and fully trusting of their owner.”

"Dogs sometimes do things that confuse people." Since there are many reasons why dogs will lick a person, Bassett says it's worth uncovering them. "Every dog behavior is an attempt to meet a need, solve a problem, or create some kind of fulfillment from the dog’s perspective. If you ignore that purpose or fail to provide appropriate outlets for your dog’s natural instincts, you risk suppressing something essential for your dog’s fulfillment as a pet. You may also unintentionally miss cues that your dog is trying to communicate. Understanding what your dog is telling you helps you meet their needs effectively, make better training decisions and build deeper trust."

1. Asking for attention

Dogs may not speak human, but they can communicate through face-licking behavior. Bassett explains that licking is a versatile tool dogs use to request attention or prompt action from their caregiver. Dogs quickly learn which behaviors get a response, and even laughing, talking, petting, or gently pushing them away can reinforce this habit.

At different times of day, face licking can have different meanings. In the morning, it might signal, “It’s time for breakfast” or “I need to go outside.” During playtime, a dog may also lick your face to express restlessness or a desire for exercise and interaction, while during cuddle time, licking is often a way to request closeness and bonding. Face licking usually occurs alongside pawing, whining, or eye contact, and recognizing these cues helps strengthen the human-canine bond and encourage positive social behavior.

2. To ask for space

Not all instances of a dog licking your face are signs of affection. "Sometimes, when a dog licks your face, it can be a dog stress signal. When dogs lick while moving their head forward, showing dilated pupils, a tucked tail, or alternating between forceful licking and turning away, communicating, 'Please give me some space,'” Bassett explains.

Bassett explains that the behavior has been described as the "kiss to dismiss" lick by certified behavior consultant Jennifer Shryock, who specializes in kids and dogs. "It describes the combination of pressure and avoidance signals dogs use to manage stressful interactions," Bassett says. "The best response is gentle intervention: redirect your dog, call them away or remove the child or adult from the interaction. This teaches your dog they can safely regulate their space without stress or defensive behavior."

3. To groom and nurture

So, what does it mean when a dog licks your face? Often, it’s a sign of grooming and bonding, showing that your dog feels a strong connection with you. "Dogs are naturally social and often groom those they feel close to," Bassett explains. "Mother dogs lick puppies to clean, stimulate, and comfort them, and adult dogs will also lick each other as part of relaxed affectionate behavior."

When your dog licks your face while resting together, it’s usually a display of caretaking and nurturing instincts, and it can act as a calming ritual. It’s also a subtle signal that your dog feels safe, connected, and content in your presence. This type of licking is typically slow and rhythmic, accompanied by soft eyes and a relaxed posture, reflecting your dog’s comfort and bonding behavior.

4. As stress relief

Another surprising reason dogs lick your face is that the behavior can provide stress relief and self-soothing. Licking releases feel-good endorphins, which can calm a dog in stressful or overstimulating situations. "You may notice periods of continuous or repetitive licking, of themselves, a rug, the couch or even you," Bassett explains. "This dog behavior is usually intentional and self-soothing, and in most cases isn’t cause for concern. In some cases, licking can become compulsive or even addictive, making it harder to interrupt. This often happens when a dog is bored, under-stimulated or not receiving enough attention."

5. To people-please and for deference

Dogs sometimes lick as a way of showing people-pleasing behavior or deference, signaling to humans or other pets that, “I’m not a threat” and “I respect you,” Bassett explains. This type of licking often comes with subtle body language, including a lowered head, soft eyes, and gentle movements that show vulnerability, such as rolling onto their back. Such cues are signals that your dog is trying to maintain harmony and communicate that they are friendly and safe to be around.

Bassett notes that if this dog behavior occurs frequently, it may reflect the dog’s environment. Dogs may develop appeasement licking behavior when they experience yelling or harsh treatment. 6. To express love, excitement and comfort

Affection is one of the main reasons dogs lick your face. Bassett explains that dogs often give “happy kisses” to show excitement when they see you, whether after a long day or a brief absence. Mother dogs groom and soothe their pups, and many adult dogs carry this instinct forward, licking their humans as a greeting or to strengthen their bond.

While face licking is often seen as a sign of love, Bassett notes it can also start as appeasement, a gentle way for your dog to signal that they are non-threatening. Your responses—laughing, petting, or talking—reinforce the behavior, creating a positive association that encourages your dog to keep licking as part of their social bonding and affectionate behavior.

Meeting other dogs is an important part of helping puppies grow into confident, well-adjusted adults.

Early socialization allows dogs to learn how to read body language, practice appropriate play behavior, and build positive associations with other animals. Puppies who have good experiences meeting other dogs are often more relaxed and comfortable in new environments later in life.

Dog parks, puppy training classes, and supervised playdates are all great ways to help young dogs safely interact with other pups.

And sometimes, like in this case, those meetings can turn into instant friendships.

Judging by the way these two Rottweiler puppies decided they were best friends within about 5 seconds, it looks like the socialization lesson went extremely well.

Niall Harbison oversees numerous dogs at his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. The sanctuary he created at the rescue provides former street dogs a place where they can receive medical care and plenty of love and affection from team members. The dogs meet other furry friends and socialize, which helps the healing process.

Yet there are some canines that have trouble fitting in. Velvet and Pedro were both friendless for most of their lives, but things changed when they met.

Velvet, a Border Collie mix, is a recent rescue, brought to Happy Doggo after being attacked by a pack of dogs. She always struggled to make friends and was an easy target for bullies because of her shyness.

Pedro, a large and shaggy dog, was a loner by nature and preferred being by himself at the rescue, until he met Velvet. The Instagram from @wearehappydoggo shared their beautiful story.

"Pedro didn't want friends, and Velvet couldn't find one," the onscreen text explained. "Until they found each other."

The video featured the two canines slowly getting to know each other with some timid sniffs and hesitant tail wags. Soon, Velvet and Pedro were forming a bond. The pair of pooches started having meals together and sleeping side-by-side for naps in the sun. Before long, they were besties.

Pedro Made the First Move

When Velvet first arrived at the Happy Doggo sanctuary, she wasn't accepted by the other canine residents. Pedro stepped up and made her feel welcome.

"We didn’t expect Pedro to be the one to comfort her, but sometimes the ones who have been through the most are the ones who understand each other best," the caption pointed out. "They might have had a rough start, but they finally have a friend to lean on"

These two precious pooches are helping each other heal and finally get to experience love and companionship.

"Sometimes, the best medicine is a best friend," the onscreen text concluded.

Anytime there's an unlikely friendship, I'm instantly on board. I love a good subversion of expectations, be it in a good book, an atypical rom-com with a surprising ending, or (my favorite) two different pets who shouldn't work, but they just do. Like the caption says, they really did need each other, as if threaded through the multiverse for generations. Some call Milton and Hammy soulmates, and I don't think that's far off, considering how quickly they bonded and how much they rely on one another to this very day.

Seeing as Milton came in as a little Dachshund, the three-legged kitty must've understood the duty to love and protect him, and she came through with flying colors. I can't think of anything better than finding your best friend, companion, and sibling from the first interaction.

Milton recently celebrated his first birthday, which means a full year of exciting new adventures with his cat sister. As with many odd-couple combinations who do best with proper socialization, Dachshunds are more than capable of accepting the resident kitty as a friend instead of a foe, but there are a few caveats.

• You call them at the park. Then, you leave, and their fun ends. 
• You call them over and proceed to trim their nails.

"Guess what they learn? That you're calling them to come back means not-so-fun stuff is about to happen," Murphy shares. Over time, this pattern can weaken your dog’s recall training and make them less likely to respond when you call. As a result, Murphy says your dog may start ignoring you altogether. “This is especially reinforcing if you repeatedly give them commands and they blow you off,” she adds.

So, how to get your dog to listen? She says mixing in positive experiences—like treats, praise, or more playtime—can help rebuild a strong come-when-called response and prevent your dog from learning to tune you out.

3. Teasing with rewards

Another common dog training mistake that can lead to dogs ignoring commands is teasing them with rewards without following through. Murphy says this habit may seem harmless, but it can actually undermine your dog’s trust and willingness to listen. "Shaking the treat bag and not delivering—we’ve all done it," Murphy concedes. "We think it’s funny to see the look of disappointment."

You may also want to get your dog to do something, like go outside for a potty break in the snow, but you don't actually want to treat them. Still, the short-term gain isn't worth the long-term pain. "It chips away at trust," Murphy warns. "If rewards feel unreliable or unattainable, or if your behavior is unfair, your dog stops believing you, even if and when you’re serious."

This darling pup's joy is evident on her salt-and-pepper, powder-sugar muzzle, and it's the most precious "welcome home, Mom" sight. Her floppy ears and jolly pep in her step make for a scene that will live rent-free in my head forevermore. My senior rescue skips the same way when he sees me, and I consider it a blessing that he and Eva are still rocking this thing called life so we can take it all in.

Eva, who's a stunning 14 years young, is a big sister to her more chaotic dog brother Maverick, has already outlived the average age of her breed (9 to 13 years), and I think that's incredible.
