OK, so they're probably not actually dancing, more mirroring and matching each other, being their silly selves, but the music gives this a whole new vibe. Instead of having a quiet argument over the toy on the floor, they probably look like they're doing a well-rehearsed synchronized dance, and it's so funny.

Why Dogs Mirror Each Other’s Behavior, and What It Says About Their Bond

Olive and Oakley are adorable, and it's easy to see how much these Golden siblings love each other. And according to experts, the mirroring they're doing shows that. 

Hanne Grice, a clinical animal behaviorist and trainer, explains on their website that dogs mirror and match as a means of communicating with each other. According to this expert, nonverbal forms of communication, such as mirroring each other by wagging their tails, tilting their heads, or bowing, aren't just for fun. 

"This synchronized behavior indicates a desire for cooperation, playfulness, or a display of submission, depending on the context," the site explains. It's an important part of communication for dogs, a "fundamental tool" that helps them establish a connection and bond with other dogs. 

Watching Oakley and Olive be their silly selves and mirror each other shows how much they love each other, and seeing that's always a great thing.

"I know Samson is adorable," Marin Baumer says in a quiet, matter-of-fact way, "even though I've never seen him myself."

In 2019, two weeks after graduating from the University of Miami, Baumer suffered a horrific car accident that led her to permanently lose her vision.

For nearly two years, Baumer navigated that new reality with the help of her family and husband. Still, she missed the independence she once had and wanted to move through the world on her own terms. So she sought the help of Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a New York-based nonprofit that breeds and trains guide dogs. This is where Baumer would meet Sampson.

A Lick on the Face That Changed a Life

Waiting in her dorm room on the Guiding Eyes campus, Baumer could hear dogs walking as they were led one by one into their new handler's room.

Suddenly, the door to her room opened.

"My heart skipped a beat," she says. "And the moment I felt Samson lick my face, I completely melted."

Guiding Eyes doesn't rush the matching process. Before pairing a handler with a dog, the organization conducts a thorough application and an in-person interview. It's looking for compatibility that goes deeper than logistics. It looks at temperament, lifestyle and pace and believes pairing takes time, because it has to.

Baumer and Sampson were a perfect match. According to Baumer, they have plenty in common, including being food-motivated, loving the outdoors and water, and, most importantly, being enthusiastic cuddlers.

"I always say he is one of my appendages," Baumer explains. "When he isn't with me, I don't feel like myself."

Every Journey Begins with Trust

Watching Baumer and Sampson navigate simple daily things, like public transportation, seems effortless. Baumer recently shared a video on her YouTube channel, explaining everything, as she confidently gives him commands like "left" and "forward," while he leads her through an outdoor mall.

"My job is to give him commands. His job is to guide me safely," Baumer explains.

Guide dogs are trained to avoid obstacles, stop at curbs, and assess whether a situation might put their handler in danger. That partnership allows people with blindness to travel safely and independently.

Now, Baumer and Sampson go to the gym five days a week, learning the route together. Once they get to class, Baumer lays out a personal yoga mat for Sampson and gets him settled. While Baumer exercises, Sampson naps through the session.

The moment the class ends, he stands up and stretches into a perfect downward dog before soaking up the attention from everyone around him.

"The added bonus of having Sampson instead of using a cane is the companionship he provides," Baumer says. When she's lying on her mat after a workout, exhausted, he'll rest his head next to hers. A simple gesture, enough to let her know he's there.

The One Thing People Get Wrong about Service Dogs

Baumer laughs at the fact that she's never actually seen Sampson herself, yet she knows exactly how much attention he attracts. Unfortunately, that attention sometimes creates dangerous situations.

"The most common misconception is that people think it's OK to interact with a working service dog," she says. Even people who know they shouldn't pet him sometimes call his name, whistle or make eye contact to get his attention.

Because Baumer cannot see who's nearby, she often doesn't know if someone is distracting Sampson. What seems like an innocent greeting can interrupt the dog's concentration while he's actively guiding her through busy streets, shops or public transport. "As my guide dog, Sampson is my eyes," she adds.

The Best Part Begins After Work

When the harness comes off, Sampson is off the clock, transforming into an ordinary dog with some wonderfully ordinary habits. His favorite treats aren't expensive biscuits — they're ice cubes.

He also loves toys, but he rarely returns them during a game of fetch. Instead, he loves to parade them around while holding them in his mouth like a proud dog.

Still, even when he is not working, he rarely leaves Baumer's side. If she's on the couch, he's curled up next to her. If she's cooking, he's at her feet waiting for a dropped vegetable.

"He always knows how to make me feel right at home," Baumer says.

Every once in a while, I come across a puppy that's so unbelievably adorable my brain stops registering it as a dog.

The contrast is what makes this so funny to me. This little dog is standing there like he's completed the most important assignment of his life, while Mom is trying to figure out how to accept this gesture without accepting the actual squirrel.

There is no shame on his face.

No uncertainty.

One person in the comments pointed out that the squirrel looked bigger than the Dachshund, which only makes the achievement seem more impressive from his perspective. He may have short legs, but apparently, his confidence has no height limit.

The entire internet basically feels the same.

The spring-loaded paw isn't random. Dogs use their paws to communicate on purpose, and there's a real reason behind it.

Why Do Dogs Paw at You for Attention?

According to the American Kennel Club, a paw on you is almost always your dog's way of trying to tell you something. Dr. Mary Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist with the AKC, explains that dogs use body language to express their needs, whether that's wanting to go outside, wanting food, or just wanting your attention.

Often it really is that simple. Burch talks about her own Border Collie, who'd put his paw on her to ask for her to pet him. If she stopped, the paw came right back down on her arm. Dogs figure out real fast that a paw gets a reaction, and once they know it works, they'll keep doing it.

That's exactly what's happening with Dyce. He's learned that a paw gets results, so the second the petting stops, the paw comes right back up. It's not aggression at all. It's a polite, low-key request that just happens to look pretty dramatic on camera.

The AKC also points out that some dogs use their paws instead of barking, since barking doesn't always get the reward they're after the way a gentle paw tap might. For bigger dogs especially, a paw is a much gentler tool than they could otherwise use to get your attention, and most seem to just know that instinctively.

Does this need fixing? Not at all. The AKC's advice is simple: understanding why your dog's pawing at you helps build the bond instead of breaking it. Don't push the paw away. 

He doesn't bite. He barely even taps. He just really, really wants to be petted.

She had one piece of advice for any woman in her 20s thinking about getting a dog: skip the girl, get the boy. The internet had thoughts.

The TikTok from @xbrooklynbell lays out her whole case, aimed specifically at women in their 20s weighing the decision. Get a dog, period, is step one. Step two, if you're torn between a boy and a girl, get the boy. She grew up with a girl dog and admits she was a little hesitant about getting a male, worried he'd be "more wild." But she says boy dogs turned out to be more protective, more loving, and more emotionally attached than she expected. "The way a boy dog looks at you and loves you if you're his owner goes unmatched," she says.

The most interesting comments landed somewhere in between.

Not everyone was picking a side that cleanly.

"More protective, no. My girls will END you while my boy will bark in a panic of emotions. But I agree with the saying — happy and goofy or smart and sassy. I love me some sassy, but no one loves me like my boy 🥰"

Even the people defending their own dog's sex kept circling back to the same idea: it's less about boy or girl and more about who that specific dog turned out to be.

So who's actually right? Turns out the answer's more complicated than boy versus girl.

Do Male and Female Dogs Really Have Different Personalities?

According to the AKC, a 2018 review of past studies found some real differences between male and female dogs. Males tended to score higher on boldness and aggressiveness. Females leaned more toward cooperating with people on tasks, while males leaned more toward social play.

But there's a wrinkle here. The AKC also points to a 2011 study showing that dog owners bring their own bias into how they describe their dogs in the first place. People often use their dogs to reflect their own ideas about gender, which makes it hard to know how much of what we "see" in a male or female dog is really the dog, and how much is just us projecting.

Breeders the AKC spoke to say sex is one of the least important things to consider. AKC Breeder of Merit Jessica Freni put it bluntly: "Sex is pretty superficial." She says temperament, health, and how well a dog fits your lifestyle matter way more than whether it's a boy or a girl. The marking and humping stereotype doesn't hold up either. Freni says females do both just as often. It's a training thing, not a sex thing.

There are a couple of situations where sex actually does matter, mostly around breeding or households with more than one dog that hasn't been spayed or neutered, where certain combinations are more likely to lead to conflict. Outside of that, the AKC's take is pretty clear: it comes down to the individual dog.

So maybe both sides of the comment section have a point. Boy dogs can be deeply affectionate. Girl dogs can be deeply protective. And the dog that ends up loving you the most probably has very little to do with what's between his or her legs.

One of my favorite things about living with a Maine Coon is the purring. Meatball doesn't just purr. He rumbles.
