Alexander Skarsgård Reveals What Is 'Intimidating' About New Role

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 4:41pm

For many Americans, the HBO series True Blood, which aired from 2008 to 2014, was their first introduction to Alexander Skarsgård. While he'd appeared in many films before then, including Generation Kill and Zoolander, the brooding Eric Northman quickly mesmerized audiences. While we eventually got to see a softer side of Eric, it was the smoldering, unpredictable Eric that drew us in.

Since then, Skarsgård has played some "good guys," such as Lincoln in What Maisie Knew and Michael in Melancholia, but the Swedish actor prefers the darker, more complicated characters. He admitted that he found his upcoming role in the romantic fantasy film Wicker "intimidating" and harder to connect to.

"I tend to be drawn toward more conflicted characters with more internal turmoil and darkness,” Skarsgård said during a Q&A at Wicker's premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, per Awards Buzz. “And to play this good-hearted, good-natured, sweet, morally righteous character was scary to me. I’m not really comfortable doing that. I don't have anything to tap into when it comes to that. So it was a stretch as an actor.”

Despite this, Skarsgård didn't hesitate to accept the role.

"I thought it was an incredible script and I thought it was —  it is a fable — but it's also an allegory," he explained. "It's a story about our society, but without being heavy-handed or didactic or preachy."

"It was so funny and sweet," he added. "And obviously a very interesting character to play."

The film centers around a fisherwoman, played by Olivia Colman, who lives in a village where she's constantly ridiculed. She goes to the basket maker (Peter Dinklage) and asks him to make her a wicker husband. Elizabeth Debicki also co-stars, playing one of the townspeople who is cruel to her.

Along with finding his inner good guy, Skarsgård realized that, due to the prosthetics that covered his face, he had to "exaggerate everything" to show his character's vulnerability. "That kind of contradicts your instinct as an actor," he said.

"So it felt ridiculous, but it was just about trusting these guys," the Big Little Lies star said, gesturing to the cast. "When they came up, and they're like, 'Can you just give us a bit more eyebrow action?' I'm like, 'Okay.'"

"But yeah, it was definitely a new, different experience for me," he added.

Hayley Erbert Hough Talks Potential Return to 'Dancing With The Stars': 'A Conflict of Interest'

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 3:48pm

Hayley Erbert Hough may just return to the Dancing With The Stars ballroom floor one day!

The 31-year-old dancer, who welcomed her first child with husband Derek Hough last month, recently opened up about the potential of returning to the show, several years after stepping away.

Erbert was a member of the DWTS troupe from 2015 to 2019 and continued her professional dancing ventures in the years that followed. But in 2023, she suffered a cranial hematoma, caused by a burst blood vessel in the skull or brain, and after undergoing an emergency craniectomy, it was unclear if she'd ever dance again.

After months of recovery, Erbert proved she was a true miracle by dancing again alongside her husband, Hough. Now, she's even considering a return to TV.

"Never say never," Hayley told People in an interview published on Saturday (Jan. 31). "Lots of my friends have gone back after having kids."

Erbert noted that it might be "a little difficult" with her husband being a judge as it could be a "little bit of a conflict of interest."

Meanwhile, Hough said that he wouldn't hold back on his critique if Erbert was on the ballroom floor, sharing that he would be "overly hard" with scoring.

"I'd be like, 'Two.' Then I'd be like, 'Babe, I love you. I'm so sorry,'" he joked.

As of right now, Ebert is focused on being the best mom she can be to the couple's daughter, Everley.

Looking back, she recalled, "A lot of people would ask me, 'Where do you see yourself in your career in five years?' I kept being like, 'You know? I don't know.' I had this epiphany one time being like, 'The reason why I don't see anything in my career in the future right now is because I want to be a mom.'"

She continued, "That was the only thing that I saw in my future, and so now that it's here, I'm like, 'I just want to relish in it, and I'll figure out the work eventually.'"

The couple are also looking forward to Hough's upcoming Symphony of Dance: Encore tour  in June during which Erbert and Everley will join him on the road. Erbert may even join Hough on stage.

"Hayley really wants to go out and dance and perform," Hough said. "Knowing her, she will."

'Days of Our Lives' Finally Lays Stefano DiMera to Rest

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 3:46pm

After years of speculation surrounding his fate, Days of Our Lives is officially laying Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) to rest, as the Peacock soap airs the character’s long awaited memorial.

In the weekly promo released on the series’ official YouTube channel, viewers get a first look at the memorial service held in Stefano’s honor, as the DiMera family gathers to remember the longtime villain and patriarch.

“Despite his flaws, he loved us fiercely, and we will honor his legacy and continue it. The house of DiMera will not fall,” E.J. DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel) says in the preview, surrounded by his family.

The Story So Far

Stefano’s on-screen absence has been nearly as complicated as his life in Salem. Actor Joseph Moscolo died on December 8, 2016. Earlier that year, Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso) believed she had killed Stefano after suspecting him of orchestrating the presumed death of her husband Bo Brady (Peter Reckell).

That storyline stretched into 2017, and appeared to conclude when Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy) and Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols) staged a fake appearance of Stefano to clear Hope’s name.

However, while reviewing photos, they realized one of the appearances had not been staged, raising the question about whether Stefano was still alive.

In 2019, Dr. Rolf revealed that Stefano had died, but not before transferring his consciousness, referred to as his “essence”, into a microchip that was implanted in Steve Johnson. The resulting transformation, dubbed ‘Stevano’ by fans, ended when the chip was destroyed, seemingly erasing Stefano once and for all.

In December 2025, E.J., Kristen (Stacey Haiduk), Chad (Billy Flynn), Theo (Tyler Joseph Andrews), and Tony (Thaao Penghlis) were kidnapped by Stefano’s adopted son Peter Blake (Dan Gauthier). While attempting to escape from the DiMera family crypt, the group discovered unidentified human remains.

Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) later confirmed those remains belong to Stefano. How they ended up in the crypt remains a mystery.

Days of Our Lives streams new episodes weekdays on Peacock.

I Tried the Viral ‘Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies’ and They’re Chewy, Crispy Perfection

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 3:32pm

While most people who get fired from a job would probably try to avoid drawing attention to it, Sarah Gormley went in a different direction. When Gormley was fired from her position as a marketing executive for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, she used her newfound free time to develop an exceptional chocolate chip cookie recipe.

When she finally nailed the recipe, she aptly named it Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies and included it in her 2024 memoir, The Order of Things: A Memoir About Chasing Joy. After taking to Instagram to talk about the cookie, Gormley's recipe went viral—first for the provocative name, and then for the delicious cookie itself.

As a cookie lover, I knew I wanted to try Gormley's recipe (but of course, the intrigue of something called Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies definitely made me even more curious). I particularly love a salted chocolate chip cookie, and Gormley’s recipe uses more salt—both in the dough and as a garnish on top—than most other cookies. Plus, I was intrigued by the fact that she calls for not one, not two, but three different kinds of sugar to create a flavorful, complex, chewy cookie

In addition to baking up a batch of the cookies myself, I also spoke with Gormley to get the inside scoop on her one-of-a-kind recipe. “I tell people the four most important tweaks to a regular chocolate chip cookie recipe are: 50% more chips, refrigerating the dough, slamming the pan (hard, to make the center fall) and the Maldon sea salt,” Gormley tells Parade

Would her four tweaks actually make for a better chocolate chip cookie? Read on to find out, and for my full review of the viral Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies.

What’s the Story Behind the ‘Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies’?

Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies certainly has a way of drawing your attention, but the name of the recipe doesn't just exist to be alluring—it's based on an actual experience.

Gormley, a former marketing executive-turned-gallerist, was fired from her position at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. (She wasn’t fired because she baked a bad batch of cookies, FWIW, and the recipe came after the fact.) So what inspired her to turn a traumatic life event into a gourmet baked treat?

“I had plenty of time on my hands that summer, and as I explain in my memoir, I worked out a lot, drank lots of martinis at The Red Cat and decided I may as well learn to bake an exceptionally good chocolate chip cookie,” Gormley shares.

And she didn't just bake up a batch or two of cookies and call it a day. Gormley baked a whopping 38 batches of cookies, tweaking the recipe eve so slightly each time before landing on the final version.

“The tweaks were tiny measurement changes—for example, trying ¼ cup more or less of all of the sugars, and then for the flour, and ½ teaspoon iterations with the vanilla," she explains. The amount of chocolate chips was also something she spent a lot of time testing, tasting and dialing in.

By the time she'd baked a batch to reflect each and every change, she was 38 batches deep, but she had created her ideal chocolate chip cookie. "I was quite diligent about figuring out how to make them both chewy and crispy, which is the perfect cookie to me,” Gormley says.

Gormley’s recipe uses a whole lot more chocolate than most other chocolate chip cookie recipes—including Martha’s own Soft and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies. Martha’s recipe includes 12 ounces of chocolate chips, while Gormley's calls for 18 ounces of chocolate chips for a rich, fudgy bite.

There’s also a bit more salt in this cookie dough compared to other chocolate chip cookie recipes out there. A duo of salted butter and sea salt are added to the dough, then flaky salt is sprinkled on top of the cookie before and after they’re baked, which adds flavor and a sophisticated bakery vibe.

And, as Gormley touched on, she created a cookie that's crispy around the edges and chewy in the center, which is a textural balance that not every chocolate chip cookie has.

Ingredients Needed for 'Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies'

You can get the full and complete recipe for these cookies on Gormley's website, but I'll take you through the ingredients you need and the general process for making them.

Gormley uses salted butter in her cookies, which is a departure from the unsalted butter that most baking recipes typically call for. She also calls for three varieties of sugar—regular granulated sugar, light brown sugar, and dark brown sugar. “I’ve learned that the dark brown sugar adds a molasses-like flavor and some of the chewiness,” she explains.

All-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda and sea salt round out the dry ingredients. You'll also need two large eggs and vanilla extract.

As for the chocolate, Gormley recommends using chocolate chunks over chips if you can, for a little added texture. It's not strictly necessary, though, so if you do go the chocolate chip route, you'll need about one and a half bags. (She calls for 18 ounces and a standard bag of chocolate chips weighs 12 ounces.)

How To Make the 'Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies'

Courtesy Kelly Vaughan

The process for making Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies is similar to other chocolate chip cookie recipes. Start by creaming the butter, sugar, and light and dark brown sugars together for about three minutes on medium-high speed until the mixture is fluffy. Then, add the eggs and vanilla and beat them for two more minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together in a separate bowl. Then, gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until you end up with a cohesive cookie dough. At this stage, the dough will look homogenous but will still be a little soft, which is why chilling the dough makes such a difference (more on that soon). Then, it's time to fold in all of that chocolatey goodness (be it chunks or chips) until they're evenly distributed throughout the dough.

This next step is optional, but Gormley says doing so makes “the best cookies ever.” She recommends chilling the dough in the refrigerator for 24 to 48 hours. “Chilling the dough is very important, but I can’t tell you why, exactly, because I am NOT a baker. I think it’s just called chemistry,” she jokes.

(For those curious, the science behind chilling cookie dough comes down to solidifying the fat, giving the dough time to hydrate and allowing the dough to dry out a bit. Those factors help deepen the flavor of the cookies, encourage browning and help the cookies spread less as they bake.)

Courtesy Kelly Vaughan

Once the dough is chilled, you’ll shape the cookies, sprinkle them with salt and bake them in a 360℉ oven (you read that right—not 350℉ or 375℉) until they’re golden brown and a bit puffy (the recipe calls for 10 minutes, but I ended up baking my cookies a bit longer). Gormley says that she tested the oven temperature at increments of five degrees before landing on 360℉.

Next comes the really fun part—slamming the baking sheet on the countertop a few times until the cookies flatten a bit. The result is slightly crinkly cookies with crispy edges and a soft, chewy center.

'Martha Stewart Fired Me Cookies': My Honest Thoughts

Courtesy Kelly Vaughan

Overall, this is a really, really good homemade chocolate chip cookie recipe. There is a lot of chocolate, which I definitely enjoyed, but I also think these cookies would be just as good with the standard 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips.

Gormley says that she makes dough balls that are a bit larger than a quarter, which I did find to be slightly confusing (and slightly small). In the end, I found that shaping large balls using about three generous tablespoons of dough yielded perfectly sized cookies for me. Because I made larger cookies, I needed to increase the bake time. Gormley says that the cookies should bake in about 10 minutes, but I needed an additional three to four minutes per batch. I ended up with a little more than four dozen cookies from the batch of dough.

Despite some of the minor adjustments that I made to this cookie recipe, it's one of the best I've ever made. The cookies were nice and crispy on the outside and rich and chewy on the inside (all you could want from a good cookie, in my opinion).

Also, I can attest to the fact that the cookies tasted nearly as good days later as they did freshly baked, which isn't something that happens often. And yes, I'm planning to eat every single one.

Legendary ‘80s Actress Explains Why Her Classic Movies ‘Can’t Be’ Remade Today

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 3:19pm

Molly Ringwald became the face of director John Hughes’ coming-of-age films in the 1980s. Four decades later, she revealed why fans will likely never see another actress take on the roles she made famous.

“Well, they can’t be [remade] because they can’t be made without the permission of [the late] John Hughes, and he didn’t want the films to be remade,” Ringwald, 57, told People in an interview published on Saturday, January 31. “And I don’t think that they should be really.”

Hughes—who died of a heart attack in August 2009 at age 59—wrote and directed some of the most enduring teen movies of the ‘80s, with Ringwald frequently starring in his flicks. Their notable collaborations include 1984’s Sixteen Candles, 1985’s The Breakfast Club and 1986’s Pretty in Pink. (Some of Hughes’ other credits were 1986’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 1987’s Planes, Trains and Automobiles, 1989’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and 1990’s Home Alone.)

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Despite her reluctance to see any of Hughes’ films remade, Ringwald told People that The Breakfast Club would probably be the most relevant option in the modern era. However, she noted that a “take” on its themes would be preferable to a faithful remake.

“I feel like if somebody does something, I would prefer that they do something … that takes from Breakfast Club and then builds on [it] and represents this generation’s issues rather than to try to recreate what was of a different time,” she elaborated.

Hughes’ films launched the acting careers of several Hollywood up-and-comers, who were nicknamed the “Brat Pack.” Members included Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Andrew McCarthy.

“I still see them from time to time,” Ringwald said of her former costars. “I seem to see Jon Cryer the most, but I love them all. Annie—I love Annie Potts—and I see Andrew McCarthy from time to time. … It’s hard to believe that it’s been 40 years [since Pretty in Pink premiered].”

Ringwald became a teen icon thanks to her starring roles in Hughes’ films. In Sixteen Candles, she portrayed 16-year-old Samantha Baker, who celebrated her birthday amid her crush on Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) and the romantic pursuits of Ted Farmer (Hall). The Breakfast Club saw Ringwald in an ensemble with Estevez, Hall, Nelson, Paul Gleason and Ally Sheedy as they embodied high school students in Saturday detention. As for Pretty in Pink, Ringwald played teenager Andie Walsh as she navigated her relationships with love interest Blane McDonnagh (McCarthy), best friend Philip F. “Duckie” Dale (Cryer) and her dad (Harry Dean Stanton).

Danica McKellar Reflects on 38 Years of ‘The Wonder Years’ in Heartfelt Tribute

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 3:18pm

Danica McKellar is honoring nearly 40 years of the coming-of-age series, The Wonder Years.

TV Insider reported that in a January 31 Instagram upload, McKellar noted that The Wonder Years premiered exactly 38 years ago. She also posted several behind-the-scenes images from the show, which ended in 1993 after a six-season run.

"Happy 38th (!) Anniversary to The Wonder Years! On January 31st, 1988, we premiered on ABC immediately following the Superbowl, and my life would be forever changed. I'm so grateful for the incredible memories, but even more grateful for all of you who have followed my career for so many years. I love that, unlike 38 years ago, we have opportunities to connect through social media!" wrote McKellar, who famously portrayed Winnie Cooper on the show.

She also encouraged Wonder Years fans to share their "favorite memories" from the show.

Fans Shared Their Appreciation for 'The Wonder Years'

Several fans flocked to the comments section to share their appreciation for The Wonder Years, which was a period piece focusing on Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) and his family in the 1960s and '70s.

"It can’t be understated how great this show was. I’m 42 and grew up with it and still will watch on stream today. The perspectives, the classic songs played in each episodes, the classic Arnold family, the characters of you will, Truly art," wrote a commenter.

"Happy 38th anniversary to this masterpiece," added another.

"Awww… Happy Anniversary to the Wonder Years!!! My family & I watched every week, and I had the hugest crush on Fred Savage! What a cutie! So many sweet memories of watching through the years. Thank you for this wonderful family show!!" shared a different person.

"Awesome! When we were kids I don’t remember seeing titles to the shows when they aired but apparently the episode that I remembered impacting me was called 'Courage' from season 4 episode 17. (Had to google it by describing the episode) I really hated seeing Kevin not defend Winnie. I was 9 when that aired, lol. One of the shows that made me want to defend everyone and everything," commented another.

Danica McKellar Shared Her Favorite Storyline From 'The Wonder Years'

In a 2018 interview with TODAY, McKellar shared her favorite storyline from The Wonder Years. She said that she was particularly fond of a storyline where "Winnie Cooper scored higher on her math SATs then Kevin Arnold did." She explained that she appreciated Winnie's excellent math skills, as she is a mathematics writer after receiving a mathematics degree from UCLA. In addition, she said she believed the storyline was ahead of its time as the show "was set back in the 1960s and at that point, it wasn't really socially acceptable for girls to do better at math."

She also said Season 4, Episode 20, wherein Winnie ends her relationship with Kevin, has "always stuck with [her]." She explained that she had just broken up with her real-life boyfriend "like a week" before shooting the scene, causing her to feel genuine emotion.

"I was really crying," said the actress during the 2018 interview.

Bella Hadid’s Ex Adan Banuelos Arrested Days After Split — What We Know So Far

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 3:00pm

Bella Hadid’s ex Adan Banuelos is having a bit of a rotten day.

Hours ago, the Mexican-American cowboy and award-winning performance-horse trainer was arrested in Texas for public intoxication, E! News reported. According to Parker County Jail records, the horseback-riding champ has since been released after posting a minor $386 bond.

TMZ published images of Banuelos’s mug shot; he can be seen with a glossed-over expression and jailbird stripes. According to the outlet, details about the Friday night that landed him behind bars have yet to surface, but Banuelos was spotted at the 4YO Open Derby at the Bosque Ranch Winter Back last night.

The unfortunate news comes just days after further downer news. Earlier this week, multiple outlets, including this one, reported that the couple had parted ways after two years of dating.

Their romance, which surfaced shortly after the 29-year-old supermodel broke up with creative director and Still Kelly clothing brand founder Marc Kalman, was made official in October 2023 when she and Banuelos were seen kissing and holding hands in Fort Worth, Texas.

In 2023, Hadid moved from her family’s farm in Pennsylvania to a ranch in Texas, which her mom, Yolanda Hadid, was building with her husband.

“They were basically like, ‘Just come. You can ride, sleep, tap out. You just can’t be alone,’” she told British Vogue last year. “So I go. I’m with my stepdad. We move cows, we’re on trail rides, and I’m starting to feel a little better, but just still dealing with my own stuff. Then, the next day, I meet my boyfriend.”

Neither Bella Hadid, nor Banuelos have commented on their split or Banuelos’s arrest.

Why Starbucks Is Losing Ground to Rivals Great and Small

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 2:49pm

Despite reports that the price of your favorite cup of coffee is steadily on the rise, with Toast putting the increase at approximately 3.4%, that's not stopping most people from heading to their local coffee shop. According to the National Coffee Association, more American adults drink coffee than any other beverage, up 7% from 2020. While that may seem like excellent news for Starbucks, which has more coffee shops in the U.S. than any other, competition is fierce.

According to food industry consulting firm Technomic, Starbucks' share of customers' spending in U.S. coffee shops is currently 48%, down from 52% in 2023. Starbucks' rival, Dunkin', on the other hand, has seen an increase in its share of the coffee market. However, for those thinking this is just a battle between Starbucks and Dunkin', think again.

Small- to mid-sized coffee companies have grown in volume over the past decade. While their numbers may be nowhere near Starbucks' 17,000 or Dunkin's 10,000 U.S. stores, their growth still takes a bite out of the large corporations' profits.

Scooter's Coffee, which started in Nebraska in 1998, had 200 stores in 2019. It now has 890 locations across 29 states. The Arkansas-based 7 Brew operated just 14 shops in 2019. It announced the opening of its 600th store in Dec. 2025. Other chains are also adding more stores, like Dutch Bros., Luckin Coffee, Mixue, and Blue Bottle. Even fast food restaurants like McDonald's are adding more coffee drinks to their menus.

“People haven’t fallen out of love with Starbucks, but they’re now polyamorous in their coffee choices,” Chris Kayes, chair of the department of management at the George Washington University School of Business, told the Associated Press. “People are now experimenting with other coffees, and they’re seeing what’s out there.”

Starbucks' chairman and CEO, Brian Niccol, has launched a plan that he hopes will lure customers back to Starbucks, which he calls "Back to Starbucks." Part of that strategy includes adding 25,000 seats across stores, encouraging customers to gather and meet.

“My experience tells me that when we get back to our core identity and consistently deliver a great experience, our customers will come back," Niccol said.

'Days of Our Lives' Teases DiMera Legacy Clash

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 2:29pm

A funeral sets the stage for a powerful conversation about blood, legacy and family on Days of Our Lives next week, according to the show’s latest promo.

In the weekly promo released on the series’ official YouTube channel, viewers see E.J. DiMera’s (Dan Feuerriegel) reacting to the news that his son Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman) and daughter-in-law Chanel DiMera (Raven Bowens) are expecting a baby.

“The baby she's carrying, is a DiMera,” E.J. joyfully exclaims to his son in the weekly preview.

Johnny pushes back, reminding his father that blood alone does not define family. “The son I already have is a DiMera,” Johnny tells him.

The Story So Far

Johnny and Chanel’s journey towards parenthood has been complicated. In a previous storyline, Chanel lost a pregnancy after being trapped in an ice storm. Doctors later warned her that future pregnancies could pose serious health risks, advising her not to conceive again for a period of time.

The couple later turned to adoption and became attached to the idea of raising a baby believed to be the child of Johnny’s cousin Tate Black (Leo Howard) and Sophia Choi (Rachel Boyd).

Johnny eventually withdrew from the process after learning new details around his own conception, creating tension and uncertainty for everyone involved.

It was later revealed that Tata was not the baby’s biological father. After time and reflection, Johnny recommitted to adoption, and he and Chanel were ultimately awarded custody of that child, whom they named John “Trey” DiMera, in honor of Johnny’s late grandfather John Black (Drake Hogestyn).

More recently, Chanel learned she is pregnant again. Despite the increased health risks discussed in the storyline, she has decided to carry the pregnancy to term.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Boatman and Bowens would be exiting their roles. Due to Days of Our Lives’ advance production schedule, their scenes are expected to continue airing through 2026 and potentially into 2027.

Days of Our Lives streams new episodes weekdays on Peacock.

The One Supplement Pharmacists Say People Take Incorrectly the Most Often

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 2:25pm

Confession time: While I wouldn’t call myself an avid supplement-popper, I'm probably too lax about taking them. The bottles include some great-sounding promises for my health, and they aren’t the same as “medicine,” right? Plus, they're natural, so there’s nothing to worry about. Or so I thought until recently.

If you've had a similar line of thinking about this topic, it’s time for a rude awakening for both of us. According to pharmacists, supplements can be taken incorrectly and unsafely, resulting in negative health consequences. They shouldn’t be taken like candy, nor do we need to take all the supplements lining the aisles of the drugstore.

The possible dangers of supplements have become evident in recent research. For example, the American Heart Association found that melatonin is linked to a higher risk of heart failure, which is (obviously) pretty scary stuff.

Supplement-related concerns extend to another common supplement, too. Pharmacists say it’s often taken in the wrong way, or when it’s not needed, and the health effects are real. That holds even though roughly 25 percent of Americans are deficient in the mineral. For expert-backed insight and safer alternatives, keep reading.

The Supplement People Take Incorrectly the Most Often

karadech Pramoonsin/Getty Images

In our wellness-focused society, you may (for better or worse) feel pushed to take lots of supplements, including iron. No shame here, but knowing the risks is important.

Social media plays a huge role in this, with ads everywhere promoting iron and iron supplements as harmless energy boosters, leading to self-treatment without proper diagnosis,” says Dr. Kelsey Goderwis, PharmD, the pharmacy manager for Kroger Health.

The fact that some people need more iron is valid. Iron deficiency is the most common form of nutritional deficiency, according to the CDC. It can contribute to many less-than-enjoyable symptoms, too, such as hair loss, brittle nails, restless legs, feeling depressed, getting sick more often, trouble concentrating, dizziness, pica and more.

Related: This Common Nutrient Deficiency Is Quietly Ruining Women’s Sleep

However, that doesn’t mean an iron supplement is the answer, especially for everyone. In fact, those symptoms may not even be from low iron levels. It’s probably fair to say this is widely misunderstood, and here’s why: According to Dr. Shannon Fitzgerald, PharmD, a toxicologist and pharmacist who contributes to Drugwatch.com, “A significant portion of people misuse iron supplements.” Additionally, iron ingestion was once the leading cause of poisoning deaths.

To be clear, iron isn’t the only supplement that’s often overconsumed—and that comes back, in part, to the media piece. “More common nutritional deficiencies are frequently overtreated due to widespread reporting, screening and the ever-growing supplement market,” Dr. Fitzgerald says. “Many consumers seek quick-fix remedies for health concerns, and with dietary supplements remaining unregulated by the FDA and content creators dispersing health information on a myriad of platforms, the outcomes can be uncertain and even harmful.”

Related: Doctors Say You Should Avoid These 4 Popular Supplements—and Take These Instead

That isn’t to say that taking iron supplements is always a concern, however. For people who are truly deficient in iron, supplements may help. With that said, it’s vital to know if that’s the case for you. If you don’t know for a fact that you’re iron-deficient, taking iron is not a good move.

“Consuming iron without bloodwork is really taking a shot in the dark,” Dr. Goderwis warns. “Iron is not harmless; consuming too much can cause a lot of issues.”

Pharmacists’ Concerns About Iron and People Taking the Supplement Incorrectly

So, the million-dollar question: What’s the big fuss? A plethora of issues, according to Dr. Goderwis. GI side effects include constipation and nausea. Too much iron can interact with or interfere with the absorption of other medications, too, making them completely unhelpful or less helpful.

Those aren’t even the scariest effects. “Taking too much iron can lead to serious health issues, including organ damage (liver, heart, pancreas), organ failure and even death,” Dr. Fitzgerald says. “Acute iron poisoning is a medical emergency and occurs most often in children, who sometimes accidentally ingest these supplements, mistaking them for candy.”

Related: Too Much—and Too Little—of This Nutrient May Increase Your Colon Cancer Risk, Studies Show

Additionally, avid iron-takers need to know this surprising and concerning fact: Not all iron supplements are the same. According to Dr. Fitzgerald, they don’t all provide the same absorption and general tolerance. Plus, the cheaper and more common versions can be more likely to cause gastrointestinal issues.

All of that is especially concerning (and, frankly, unnecessary) if you don’t need more iron in the first place. To know if your iron levels are where they need to be, you’ll want to get labs done, not just rely on symptoms.

The bottom line is this: Labs or no labs, taking iron supplements without a medical provider’s support is something to avoid. “Iron supplementation is not ‘one size fits all,’” Dr. Goderwis says. “As with any health condition, diagnosis and treatment should be guided by a qualified provider and monitored at regular intervals.”

President Joe Biden Once Made a 'Beeline' to Fangirl Over Catherine O'Hara

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 2:13pm

Joe Biden is said to have once made a "beeline" for Catherine O'Hara when the two were present at the same function, passing over his fellow politicians in his rush to meet the legendary actress.

Seamus O'Regan Jr., a former TV journalist and politician from Canada, shared the touching story following the Beetlejuice star's shocking death at the age of 71, posting a photo with her from an unconfirmed event that Parade suspects took place at the Ottawa Aviation Museum on March 24, 2023, where then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hosted a gala to honor the rebuilding of the relationship between the United States and Canada, according to Politico, after the previous—and now current—administration "set fire to the cross-border partnership."

While, naturally, many politicians were in attendance, so were other big names from both countries, including O'Hara and herSchitt's Creek co-star Eugene Levy.

The photograph, which found O'Hara seated at a table with O'Regan Jr. and another gentleman with a Canadian emblem pinned to his lapel, was taken after the former president had already come and gone, but O'Regan Jr. still clearly remembers the touching moment.

President Biden Made His Love for 'Schitt's Creek' Known With One Simple Word

"Minutes before someone took this, President Biden beelined to our table," he described, noting how Biden rushed right by "Ministers of This and Secretaries of That" to reach the legendary actress.

He came to stand before her and simply gushed, "Moira!" in reference to her iconic Schitt's Creek role, which, according to O'Regan Jr., left the actress completely tickled.

"We laughed ‘til we cried," he recalled. "She loved every minute of it all."

O'Hara's death rattled the world. She was transported to the emergency room early in the morning on Friday, Jan. 30, and later died in the hospital after an unspecified "brief illness," with no more information provided at this time.

Countless members of the Hollywood community have spoken out in mourning, from longtime to collaborators to folks who only worked with her for a day or two, all of whom agree that she was a "genius" on and off the screen, and one of the kindest people they ever came across. Her death, Pedro Pascal said, left "less light in my world."

The Easy Way To Turn Canned Crescent Rolls Into a Bakery-Worthy Pastry

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 2:01pm

There's something about a warm, bakery-style pastry that can really set the tone for your whole day. Those buttery, flaky layers and caramelized edges are absolutely delicious and make the moment feel a little bit special.

But the reality is that most of us don't have the time or budget to go to a fancy local bakery on a regular basis, nor the patience, skill or counter space for making pastry from scratch. Lucky for us, social media is full of lots of shortcut bakery-style treats that you can make at home anytime the craving hits.

Cookbook author and food blogger Maegan Brown of The Baker Mama shares a lot of kitchen and recipe hacks, and her Cinnamon Sugar Cruffins, a hybrid of croissants and muffins, recently popped up on my Instagram feed and stopped me mid-scroll.

Cruffins are tall, swirled pastries that are crisp on the outside and tender in the middle, with visible layers that look impressive and taste even better. Traditionally, they're made with laminated dough and careful shaping, but Brown's version, which leans on canned crescent roll dough, skips all of that fuss while still giving you the flavor and texture you want.

This recipe features only four ingredients, one muffin pan and about 20 minutes in the oven to deliver a tray of cinnamon sugar pastries that look like they belong in a pastry case. Whether you need an easy weekend treat, a holiday breakfast that wows or something special for guests, these cruffins prove that impressive baking doesn't have to be complicated.

What Are Crescent Roll Cruffins?

Brown's recipe calls for canned crescent rolls, which give you the flaky layered effect of the popular bakery pastry with far less effort. "Crescent roll dough makes it fast, fun and foolproof—perfect for busy mornings," Brown tells Parade. As the dough bakes, the layers separate and puff, creating those tall spirals with crisp edges and tender centers.

Courtesy Angel Albring

This is perfect for home bakers because all you have to do is open a can, add your flavors, shape the pastries and bake. Brown has found that the crescent roll cruffin method is a fun canvas for a wide range of flavors. (We previously wrote about her garlic Parmesan version.)

"From savory to sweet to seasonal, there’s a Cruffin recipe to satisfy everyone," Brown shares. And she's not just saying that. On her website, she has 10 variations on the simple, swirly pastries, including carrot cake, key lime and confetti.

Ingredients for Crescent Roll Cruffins

Brown's recipe, which you can find in full on her website, keeps the ingredient list super short. All you need is crescent roll dough, softened butter, cinnamon and granulated sugar. You'll also need a rolling pin, non-stick cooking spray or olive oil and a muffin tin.

View this post on Instagram How To Make Crescent Roll Cruffins

To start, prepare a muffin pan by spraying it with oil or non-stick cooking spray. Roll out the crescent dough, pinching the perforations together to seal them. When you're done, you should have a large rectangle of solid dough. This was hard for me to achieve because my rolls kept separating and tearing, but I eventually got it close enough to the right shape.

Courtesy Angel Albring

Spread a light layer of softened butter across the dough, then mix the cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle that mixture over the butter.

Courtesy Angel Albring

Roll the dough tightly into a log, pinching the end to seal.

Slice the dough in half crosswise, creating two dough rolls. Working with one dough roll at a time, slice the dough in half lengthwise, exposing the cinnamon sugar layers inside.

Courtesy Angel Albring

Wrap the dough pieces into loose spirals around your finger, with the cut sides facing outward so the layers remain visible as they bake. Place each dough spiral into a muffin cup.

Courtesy Angel Albring

Bake at 350°F for about 20 minutes until the cruffins are golden and crisp on top. As soon as you remove them from the oven, sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar generously over the pastries.

Crescent Roll Cruffins: My Honest Thoughts

From a difficulty standpoint, this recipe is extremely approachable. The dough is pretty easy to handle, but it does take some practice to get the spiral right. I will say that even imperfect spirals bake up beautifully, though, which makes this an especially friendly recipe for inexperienced bakers.

Courtesy Angel Albring

The texture is where these really shine. The edges are crisp and caramelized, while the centers stay soft and tender. Each bite has visible layers, pockets of cinnamon sugar and just enough butter to make them indulgent without being greasy. The flavor is simple but nostalgic. It's like a classic cinnamon roll went to Paris on vacation.

But the real win? My kids declared them "the best breakfast we've had all week!" That compliment, plus the fact that these treats are so easy to put together, means I'll absolutely make them again.

4 Tips for Making This Recipe

Based on my experience and Brown's, here are a few things to keep in mind if you make this recipe.

1. Roll it right

To create cruffins with tall, flaky, layered tops, you need to take your time when rolling and shaping the dough. "Rolling tightly and slicing cleanly makes the biggest difference in those pretty layers," shares Brown.

2. Top it off

The final hit of cinnamon sugar might not seem like a big deal, but Brown says that the simple step makes the pastries so much better. "Don’t skip the cinnamon sugar sprinkle on top," she says. "It gives them that extra sweet crunch."

3. Mix things up

The cinnamon sugar version is classic and delicious, but I think it would be fun to divide the dough in half and make two variations so you could have a cruffin assortment for breakfast or brunch. I have my eye on Brown's Nutella version, but the carrot cake option would be great for any upcoming spring parties.

If you want a lower lift variation, you could swap out the granulated sugar for brown sugar, top the warm cruffins with raw sugar instead of cinnamon sugar or add some ground cardamom or nutmeg to the cinnamon sugar mixture.

4. Toast them up

If you have any leftovers, it's best to heat them in the toaster oven or regular oven. You can heat them in the microwave, but it will affect the texture and can make them chewy instead of light, crispy and flaky.

This 1969 Classic Song Reached No. 1 on Billboard 56 Years Ago Today

Sat, 01/31/2026 - 1:48pm

Fifty-six years ago today, the Jackson 5's classic song "I Want You Back" reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

The hit was the group's debut single and became a massive success due to its infectious energy, catchy melody and outstanding vocals. While the song was the first released by the group under the Motown label, it launched them into megastardom within the first four months of release.

"I Want You Back" was written by the Corporation, a record production team assembled by Motown label head Berry Gordy. The song was originally intended to be for Gladys Knight or Diana Ross; however, after hearing the Jacksons' rendition, it is hard to imagine anyone else singing it.

The classic song was the first of four consecutive hits for the band. Songs such as "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There" all debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart in the year that followed, 1970.

The multi-hit run quickly established the small-town group as a pop-soul phenomenon. Their unique youthful sound and energy played a pivotal role in defining the genre in the early 1970s. The Jackson family's fame only grew in the coming years, with the breakout band member Micheal Jackson pursuing a solo career in 1971.

The Jackson Legacy

The Jackson 5 was formed in 1964 by brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael Jackson. With a passion for music making, the brothers began performing locally around their hometown of Gary, Indiana, before signing with Steeltown Records in 1967. From there, the group moved to Detroit, Michigan, where they became global sensations.

Between 1969 and 1975, The Jackson 5 released nine full-length albums. After their name change in 1975 to "the Jacksons," they released another six studio albums until they disbanded in 1989.

Throughout the band's career, they achieved significant commercial success and critical acclaim. In 1997, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, making them the youngest group to do so at the time.
