With the British band The Beatles being so ingrained in the cultural zeitgeist, it's almost surprising that not all of their beloved tunes were chart-toppers. For instance, their 1966 classic "Eleanor Rigby" never reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. However, the song, off the band's 1966 album Revolver, took home the chart's 11th position during the week of September 24, 1966.

Paul McCartney discussed writing the tune in a 1978 interview, eight years after he and his Beatles bandmates, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison, split up. According to McCartney, he had randomly come up with the line "picks up the rice where a wedding has been" while playing the piano.

"That came out of the blue. You know, I just didn't know where that came from," recalled the musician, now 84, in the 1978 interview.

He said that he began examining the lyric and came to the conclusion that he was describing "a lonely old lady type." McCartney said he was then tasked to find a name for the main character of the song.

"I remember walking around Bristol one night looking for a name. Because I wanted kind of a really nice name that didn't sound wrong. That sounded like someone's name, but was different enough and wasn't just like, Valerie Higgins. Something a little bit more evocative," said McCartney. "And I saw a shop called Rigby's and I thought, 'That's a great name. Rigby.' Because it's normal but it has a bit of an extra thing to it. And Eleanor just worked with that."

Lennon, who died in 1980 at the age of 40, shared some insight into helping McCartney with the song. In an interview released by the official Beatles YouTube account, Lennon described "Eleanor Rigby" as "Paul's baby."

"I helped with the education of the child. And we worked in a room together on it somewhere," said Lennon.

He also said that he and McCartney had considered calling the song's other character, Father McKenzie, Father McCartney. However, McCartney vetoed the name because he was concerned his father, James McCartney, "would be upset."

While the music industry is reeling from news of the death of music titan Clive Davis, soft rock icon Kenny Loggins is paying tribute to the legendary executive whose early support helped shape his career. Davis’ belief in Loggins during the singer’s formative years helped turn him into one of the most influential hitmakers of the 1970s and 1980s, helping give birth to what is now often associated with the Yacht Rock sound.

Davis’ contributions to modern music are vast, including discovering and developing artists such as Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys, but his early support of Loggins helped define an era of soft rock that still resonates today.

Kenny Loggins Pays Tribute to Clive Davis

In a post shared to social media on Monday, June 22, Loggins writes:

"I owe my career to Clive Davis. He believed in me when others would only 'wait and see.' He had the ability to use his 'gut' instead of just looking at the numbers. The last of his kind in this business, he will be missed."

Loggins also shared a recent photo of himself with Davis, who was holding a copy of Loggins’ 2013 biography The Soundtrack of My Life.

Clive Davis’ Legacy in Modern Music

Clive Davis died Monday, June 22, at the age of 94 following one of the most storied careers in the music industry. Known for his refined ear and ability to identify superstars before they broke through, Davis spent decades at Columbia Records and Arista Records.

Nearly 32 years after its release, the iconic Soundgarden single “Black Hole Sun” is charting again on the Billboard Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart.

The song, which was released on May 13, 1994 as the third single from the band’s fourth studio album, Superunknown, is currently sitting at the No. 14 spot. The Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart tracks the ongoing streaming success of all songs within the genre. “Black Hole Sun” remains one of the oldest catalog titles climbing the upper ranks of the chart—a testament to its ability to bridge the gap between generational audiences.

Since “Black Hole Sun” debuted on the chart back in March 2023, it has enjoyed a staggering 118-week non-consecutive stay. In total, the single has crossed over onto four distinct Billboard charts, most notably reaching No. 1 on Hot Hard Rock Songs in 2024 and ruling Mainstream Rock Airplay for seven straight weeks in 1994.

Randy Newman Wrote the Song So Quickly That He Kept It

Randy Newman wrote and sang the original version of "You Got A Friend In Me." He recently talked toPEOPLE about writing the playful song.

"They told me they wanted it to be about their friendship and almost nothing else," Newman, 82, said. "That was really the prime importance to them, that that was emphasized."

The lyrics came easily to the songwriter who also worked on Cats Don't Dance and James and the Giant Peach at the same time. "It came rather quickly," he continued. "I think I kept it for a couple days so they wouldn't notice that I did it fast. Sometimes you do something fast and it works out very well."

The friendship song was nominated for Original Song at the Academy Awards. It was up against Unstrung Heroes, Sabrina, The American President, and Pocahontas. Pocahontas took home the golden statue.

Newman is involved with the fifth Toy Story movie. But there is also a big name who performed a song. Taylor Swift's "I Knew It, I Knew You" is a country song about looking at the history you share with someone. The music video focuses on Jessie's (Joan Cusack) journey throughout the franchise and her friendship with Woody and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). This is a very similar theme to the song that started it all and is considered the best Pixar song.

The music industry is mourning legendary industry executive Clive Davis, who died Monday, June 22, at 94.

Among the many artists who are paying tribute is Bruce Springsteen, whose career was hugely influenced by Davis.

"Over here on E Street, we mourn the death of the great record man and close friend Clive Davis," Springsteen shared on Instagram. "At 22 years old, he changed my life when he signed me to Columbia Records. He treated me with the same respect and kindness as a 22-year-old nobody as he did after all my success. A great man. All our prayers and love."

Clive Davis was head of Columbia Records when he auditioned a young Springsteen. While he was in his early 20s and inexperienced, the music mogul could already see how talented he was as a songwriter.

"When I signed Bruce Springsteen, it had zero to do with live performance," Davis told People in 2022. "He just stood there. When he auditioned for me, he just stood and played the guitar and sang his songs."

Davis watched The Boss rehearsing and gave him advice on how to fill up a stage the size of Radio City Music Hall. "I'm alone in the theater, and I walk up to the stage and I say to him, 'It's the first time I've seen you on a large stage. It's usually at small clubs and I never knew if you'd move or not. Would you consider" — you've got to be delicate — 'would you consider [moving]? Something to consider.'"

"I said, 'Don't do it if it's not natural for you, but I know that the potential of the songs would lend itself to more physical movement on your part,'" he added. Of course, now Springsteen is one of the most beloved live entertainers.

Clive Davis also used some tough love in the making of Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. which transformed the trajectory of Springsteen's career. When he listened to the album, he didn't hear anything he thought could be a chart hit, so he told the New Jersey native to make something more commercial.

"Springsteen was a mature guy, even though he was young," said Davis, per the BBC. "He said, 'OK, if that's the way it works, let me go back and think about it.'

"And he came back and said, 'That was a good call. I wrote Blinded By The Light and Spirit In The Night.'" While these songs weren't huge hits for the musician, they proved Springsteen had an eye for a hit.

For nearly five decades, Robert Smith has been one of alternative rock's most recognizable voices. He helped turn The Cure into one of the most influential bands of the post-punk era, scoring hits that helped define generations of fans.

Yet despite all of that success, Smith has just achieved a Billboard milestone for the first time.

According to Billboard, Smith appears on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist for the first time thanks to his guest appearance on Olivia Rodrigo's "What's Wrong With Me." The song debuts at No. 17 on the chart dated June 27 after generating 15.5 million official U.S. streams in its opening week.

The achievement arrives as Rodrigo's third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, opens at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

While this is Smith's first Hot 100 appearance billed as a solo artist, he is hardly a newcomer to the charts. As the frontman and primary songwriter of The Cure, he helped guide the band to 14 Hot 100 entries between 1986 and 1996. Their biggest hit was 1989's "Lovesong," which climbed all the way to No. 2. Other charting favorites included "Friday I'm in Love," "Just Like Heaven," "Pictures of You," and "Why Can't I Be You?"

Formed in England in 1976, The Cure evolved from post-punk pioneers into one of the defining alternative rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. Led by Smith's unmistakable voice and songwriting, the group sold more than 30 million records worldwide and earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

In 2023, Rolling Stone named Smith to its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time, writing, "With the Cure, he’s a master of breathy intimacy and erotic wit, as if he’s confiding secrets by candlelight, even when he’s singing about cats and spiders. He works his mopey voice into a powerfully expressive instrument, whether he’s going for sexy misery ('Close to Me'), self-mocking misery ('Let’s Go to Bed'), or miserable misery ('One Hundred Years'). 

The band experienced a major resurgence with 2024's Songs of a Lost World, their first album of new material in 16 years. The release topped charts in multiple countries and later helped The Cure win their first ever Grammy Awards in 2026.

Rodrigo has long cited The Cure as one of her favorite bands, making the collaboration a meaningful one for both artists. In a message to fans before the album's release, she called Smith one of her musical heroes and said his songs have been part of her life for as long as she can remember.

For Smith, the new chart entry adds yet another accomplishment to a career that has already included classic albums, arena tours, Hall of Fame recognition and a lasting influence on generations of musicians. Nearly 50 years after helping form The Cure, he's still finding new ways to make Billboard history.

Written and recorded for their self-titled 1967 album, The Doors' song "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" would become the first single released by the legendary rock band.

All of the members of the band contributed as songwriters to the track that ended up on the studio album. The iconic guitar riff was inspired by a riff in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's cover of the song "Shake Your Moneymaker." Other inspiration for the song included "What I'd Say" by Ray Charles and "One Two Brown Eyes" by Them.

Originally, the lyrics of "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" included the repeated refrain, "She gets high!" However, because of the drug associations and other controversy, the producer of the song, Paul A. Rothchild, opted to remove the word "high" in the final mix, leaving it instead as just, "She get!" The band wasn't thrilled with the change but ultimately agreed to leave it as is. In 1999, the song was remastered and "high" was re-added for the rerelease.

"Break On Through (To the Other Side)" was released as the first single by The Doors on New Year's Day in 1967. The song peaked at No. 126 on the charts in the United States. Despite this, the song went on to be considered a staple of the band's and became a consistent track on their live performance set lists.

As a debut single, "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" was commended by critics and well received. Billboardcalled it a "powerful debut" and an "excitement filled rocker." The song has gone on to be considered one of the group's best. The Guardianranked it No. 2 on the best songs by The Doors of all time.

In 2012, "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" was one of the tracks picked by NASA to play on Mars during a mission.

More than five decades after its release, Queen's debut single "Keep Yourself Alive" continues to stand as one of rock music's most enduring songs despite never charting on Billboard in the United States or the United Kingdom.

Released in July 1973, "Keep Yourself Alive" introduced the world to Queen long before the band became one of the biggest names in rock history. While later hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Are the Champions," "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" earned major chart success, the band's first single received little radio support and failed to enter the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Today, however, the song is widely recognized as a cornerstone of Queen's legacy and remains a favorite among longtime fans.

Written by guitarist Brian May, "Keep Yourself Alive" opened Queen's self-titled debut album and served as the band's first official single. The track was among the earliest songs the group recorded and was included in a demo from December 1971.

According to Queen's official "Queen The Greatest" series, the song ultimately became the opening track on the first side of the band's first album, marking the beginning of a journey that would eventually make Queen one of the best-selling rock bands in history.

Reflecting on the song years later, May explained that its message was often misunderstood.

“I wasn’t very sure that I was a songwriter, really, I just sort of had this idea, and strangely enough the lyrics for ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ are meant to be kind of a comment, they’re meant to be slightly ironical. Everyone always did think that ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ was just a jolly song about how great it is to be alive, but it’s actually more about asking the question ‘is there more to life than this?’ in a sense.”

The guitarist shared a similar explanation during Queen's 50th-anniversary video series.

“I wasn't very sure that I was a songwriter, but I just sort of had this idea. Strange enough, the lyrics to 'Keep Yourself Alive' are meant to be kind of a comment. They're meant to be slightly ironic.”

At the time of its release, Queen was still an unknown band. EMI released the single in the UK on July 6, 1973, and it arrived in the United States later that year through Elektra Records.

The song struggled to gain radio airplay and failed to chart in both countries. It remains the only Queen single that did not chart in the UK.

Despite its commercial performance, critics noticed the band's potential. Early reviews praised the song's energy, musicianship, and distinctive guitar work. As Queen's popularity grew throughout the 1970s, interest in the track increased as well.

The song became a regular part of the band's live shows. From Queen's earliest performances featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and later bassist John Deacon, "Keep Yourself Alive" was frequently included in concert setlists.

Mercury once said the track “was a very good way of telling people what Queen was about in those days.”

Its role as a live favorite helped keep the song alive long after its disappointing chart performance.

Queen Classic Earns Lasting Recognition

Over the years, "Keep Yourself Alive" has gained recognition as one of the strongest songs from Queen's debut album.

In 2008, Rolling Stone ranked it No. 31 on its list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time,” per Stereogum. The publication described the song as “an entire album's worth of riffs crammed into a single song.”

Queen's official anniversary series called it “the song that started it all,” while noting that it remained a crowd favorite as the band's concerts grew larger throughout the years.

Fifty-three years after its release, "Keep Yourself Alive" remains an important chapter in Queen's history and a reminder that chart success is not always the final measure of a song's impact.

This slate of shows follows the second round of Finn's joint tour with Patterson Hood, frontman of the Drive-By Truckers, this month, as well as a jaunt across the pond supporting Mountain Goats in October.

“I put together The Band of Forgiveness last year with three Minneapolis-based musicians—Nelson Devereaux, Joe Strachan, and Ethan Elseth,” Finn said in a press statement, via Pitchfork. “I had imagined a group of musicians that would help me take on some of my songs in a unique approach, one that let the stories shine through but still brought a high level of musicality. … I was thrilled how the tour went—each show the band ascended higher, and we were able to create dramatic musical narratives that were exciting and satisfying.”

Released in April 2025, Always Beenis the sixth solo record from Finn. Produced by Adam Granduciel and backed by members of The War on Drugs, the LP leans into alternative and heartland rock with indie-folk arrangements and cinematic character stories. 

Upon release,Always Been received critical acclaim with raves applauding the synergy between Finn and Granduciel, The War on Drugs’ atmospheric rhythm, and Finn’s conversational vocals. Tracks “Luke & Leanna,” "Fletcher's," and “Postcards” received special acclaim for their lush, upbeat arrangements and storytelling vibe akin to BruceSpringsteen. 

With his band The Hold Steady, Finn has recorded nine albums. Formed in 2003 with guitarist Tad Kubler in Brooklyn after relocating from Minneapolis, The Hold Steady made their debut with Almost Killed Me in 2004 via Frenchkiss Records. It's one of the most beloved songs from the Eagles' catalog, but many fans don't know that it was written with the help of another rock icon.

The famous 1979 track "Heartache Tonight" was co-written by founding Eagles members Don Henley and Glenn Frey, as well as the band's primary collaborator, J.D. Souther — but another famous musician also helped shape the song's chorus.

It was none other than Bob Seger who played a part in the creation of the legendary track, which would end up becoming the Eagles' last song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

While previously looking back on the making of the song in a liner notes interview for The Very Best of the Eagles (2003), Frey recalled, "I seem to remember that I had the verse thing going on for 'Heartache Tonight,' and I was showing it to [Bob] Seger, and we were jammin,'" per KWFR-FM. "I think we were jammin' on electric guitars at LaFontaine — and then he blurted out the chorus. That's how 'Heartache' started."

"Then Bob disappeared, and J.D., Don, and I finished that song up," Frey added. "No heavy lyrics — the song is more of a romp — and that's what it was intended to be."

Naturally, the song ended up becoming a massive success, landing a 15-week run on the Billboard Hot 100, including one week spent at No. 1. It is one of the Eagles five No. 1 hits on the Hot 100, along with "Best of My Love," "One of These Nights," "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California.

"Heartache Tonight" also it served as the Eagles' final No. 1 hit before the group ultimately disbanded in 1980.

Everyone’s favorite cowboy doll and space action figure have made their way back on the big screen for Toy Story 5.

The film brings back franchise stars, TomHanks as Woody and TimAllen as Buzz Lightyear, with quite a bit of success. The fifth installment made $312 million worldwide for the opening weekend, a record for the movies.

After 31 years, the animated family comedy seems to be a never-ending story, but will it continue? Hanks spoke to Entertainment Weekly about whether he would return for a sixth film. 

"If you're gonna do another Toy Story, it better be worthwhile," Hanks shared. "It better be great. You better be examining some theme that is not just dragging it out because people like the title. I mean, it is a huge corporate business without a doubt, I'm not gonna discount that. But unless it's good, new, fresh, there's no reason to do it at all."

Andrew Stanton, who has written for all the films and directed Toy Story 5, revealed to the outlet that "this is probably the last one I'm gonna do."

As technology and A.I. become increasingly part of every industry, the future of filmmaking is also heavily debated. Hanks questioned if a new Toy Story film would even need him to return.

"Time is undefeated," he said. "The question would be whether or not we could cobble together some version of me. Every word we have ever recorded in time in Toy Story is on digital media somewhere, so they could put together anything they would want."

Hanks and Allen agreed that this is "a scary thought."

Toy Story 5 revolves around a similar theme. The well-known toy characters must confront the technology age after Bonnie (their owner) receives a tablet that allows her to play online and not just with the toys.

Jordan Peele Shared Insight Into Writing the Script for 'Get Out' in a 2017 Interview

In a 2017 interview with CBS Mornings, Peele discussed writing Get Out. He explained that he had wanted to bring his perspective and "truth as a Black man" to film. Peele said when he began writing the movie, he "felt like racism was not being called out sufficiently enough."

"I was trying to bring a piece of the conversation I had never seen put on film before. I felt like there was this void in the way we talk about race," said Peele in the interview.

Peele also said he pulled from his real-life experiences for certain scenes in Get Out. He pointed to one moment wherein Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) is at a party with his girlfriend, Rose's (Allison Williams) family and their friends.

"It's a scene where, you know, it's a group, he's the only Black guy. It's a bunch of older white people who are trying to connect with him on his Blackness. First saying things, like, you know, 'I know Tiger [Woods].' And that's the situation that I've been in. I think every minority has been in," said the former Key & Peele star, who took home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Get Out. "I imagine if you're a woman in a room full of men, you're viewed as a woman before you're viewed as a human being. On the surface, it's a harmless thing, but what I wanted to point out with this film is that it's connected to the real, deep horror of racism."

During the CBS Mornings interview, Peele, who has a background in comedy, also shared how he was able to pivot into creating horror movies. He explained that both horror and comedy are about examining and revealing a certain truth.

"If you're not accessing something that feels true, you're not doing it right," said Peele, who has directed the horror moviesUs (2019) and Nope (2022).

More than three decades after its release, Mazzy Star’s 1993 love song "Fade Into You" is finding an entirely new audience thanks to 20-year-old music sensation Sombr. The young music phenomenon treated fans to a stripped-down version of the iconic love song during a visit to the SiriusXM studios in 2025. In the intimate performance, a then-19-year-old Sombr, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose, tackles Mazzy Star’s career-defining ballad. Mazzy Star, the beloved California alternative rock band, was formed in the late 1980s by guitarist and songwriter David Roback and vocalist Hope Sandoval.

Mazzy Star blended elements of dream pop, folk, and psychedelia to create an alternative rock sound that felt both intimate and otherworldly. Sombr has taken the pop charts by storm with hits like "Back to Friends" and "Undressed" and is known for his intimate, guitar-driven alt-pop sound.

A gushing fan base jumped into the comment section on SiriusXM’s social media post, noting that many artists have tried to cover Mazzy Star’s iconic sound, but few have been able to capture Sandoval’s ethereal vocals quite like Sombr.

"His voice works really well covering this song. I’ve heard other bands do it and it just doesn’t sound good, but this sounds really great," shared one fan.

Another added, "Oh my god my favourite artist and my favourite song."

Sombr’s decision to reintroduce the 1993 powerhouse anthem to a new generation of fans resonated deeply with listeners. One fan shared, "Been obsessed w this song again, for the past 18 months. @sombr excellent choice!"

Before she was a global A-lister and an Oscar winner, Angelina made her on-screen acting debut aged 16 in a mostly forgotten music video.

The young actress starred in the music video "Alta Marea" by Antonello Venditti, a cover of "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House. At the time, she had modeled but was still an unknown name as an actress.

"At the casting, among about 200 girls, a very thin 16-year-old teenager with amazing lips and t--- also passed by," reads the description of the video published on YouTube by SalvatiChannel, per Today Italy.

"In person, she was like many others, in fact, she was even a little short (she didn't even reach 1.70 m), but in front of the camera she was fabulous! I chose her for the leading role... her name was Angelina Jolie and "Alta Marea" was her first work."

The track is a beloved Italian pop song that blends Venditti's signature Italian pop with the soaring, power ballad melodies of the 1980s original.

The moody video shows the young actress posing for the camera and reading a love letter. In hindsight, the video is quite alarming as it sees a very young Jolie flirting with much older male co-stars.

Before becoming a screen icon, she logged numerous music videos under her belt. She also appeared in the 1994 Meat Loaf video for "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through", where she played a runaway teenager who finds an old jukebox in a junkyard that explodes.

Her other on-screen credits include Lenny Kravitz's "Stand by My Woman" music video, Widespread Panic's "Wonderin'" music video, The Lemonheads' music video for "It's About Time", and The Rolling Stones' music video for "Anybody Seen My Baby?".

More recently, she appeared in her ex-husband's, Billy Bob Thornton's, music video for "Angelina" and Korn's "Did My Time" video.

In the summer of 1976, a song written to sell blue jeans became a No. 1 global smash. Called “Jeans On,” the jingle was made to literally get buns into well-made denim, but as history will reveal, David Dundas’ mellow rock-and-roll track had plans of its own.

Dominating charts across the globe, “Jeans On” hit No. 1 on both Germany’s and Zimbabwe’s official singles charts, while peaking at No. 17 in the U.S. and No. 3 in several other countries, including Dundas’ native United Kingdom. 

Written by Dundas and Roger Greenway — whose songwriting resume includes The Fortunes’ “You’ve Got Your Troubles,” The Hollies’ “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress,” and Coca-Cola’s world-famous “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” — “Jeans On” isn’t your typical jingle. Rather, it’s a breezy, slow-burn rock ’n’ roll track with a touch of blues, a looping guitar riff, and Dundas’ mellow vocals. 

The track was so good that Dundas and Greenway expanded the jingle’s lyrics into a full-length song that then became the global hit we know today.

According to Grunge, the song was “couched in so much nostalgia” that even America wanted a piece of the pie, with denim brand Wrangler commissioning its own version of the song for U.S. television.

Following the "Jeans On," Dundas released a few more singles, including “Another Funny Honeymoon,” which charted in the U.K., but that was pretty much the gist of his pop career. 

Shifting to screen work, Dundas began composing and scoring music for television and film, with some of his most notable contributions featured in the award-winning British film Withnail & I(1987). He also wrote the original iconic theme song “Fourscore” for the U.K.'s Channel 4.  

Alongside his composing career, Dundas appeared as an actor in several films, including 1961’s Prudence and the Pill and 1980’s Avalanche. 

Dundas himself came from an unusual background for a pop jingle star. Born into the British aristocracy, he’s the son of Lawrence Dundas, the 3rd Marquess of Zetland, and Penelope Pike. 

Which raises two questions: How often does a lord wear jeans? And could an “O-O-Ozempic” jingle ever top the charts? Nah.

The Social Security Benefit Most Divorced Spouses Don't Know About

One of the biggest financial reasons the 10-year mark matters is Social Security. Under current rules, divorced individuals may be eligible to claim Social Security benefits based on a former spouse's earnings record if the marriage lasted at least 10 years and certain other requirements are met.

"Most people don't realize that 10 years is the qualifying threshold for Social Security spousal and survivor benefits, including for divorced spouses," Craig Parker, Assistant General Counsel at Trust & Will, told Parade. "A former spouse married at least a decade can claim benefits based on their ex's earnings record."

In addition to the 10-year marriage requirement, individuals generally must be at least 62, currently unmarried, and entitled to a retirement benefit that is lower than the benefit they would receive based on their ex-spouse's record. In some cases, there is also a timing rule: if an ex-spouse has not yet claimed Social Security, the divorce must typically have been finalized for at least two years before benefits can be claimed on their record.

"Beneficiary designations, will and trust documents often still reflect the financial reality of year one or two," he says. "Major life changes like a home purchase, children or career shifts should trigger an update."
