When A Tribe Called Quest released The Low End Theory on Sept. 24, 1991, the group created an album that sounded both unmistakably of its moment and decades ahead of it.

The release date is confirmed by Rhino’s account of the four landmark albums that reached American record stores that day. Nirvana’s Nevermind, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Pixies’ Trompe Le Monde arrived alongside Tribe’s second album.

The Low End Theory placed Q-Tip and Phife Dawg’s conversational rhymes over upright-bass lines, crisp drums and jazz samples, producing a warm but forceful sound that helped expand the possibilities of hip-hop.

“Check the Rhime,” “Jazz (We’ve Got)” and “Scenario” demonstrated the album’s range. The latter also gave Busta Rhymes a showstopping closing verse that helped introduce him to a much wider audience.

The album’s influence eventually received official recognition.

In 2022, the Library of Congress added The Low End Theory to the National Recording Registry.

Under the Library’s selection criteria, recordings added to the registry must be considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Legacy Recordings’ announcement described The Low End Theory as A Tribe Called Quest’s second studio release and a defining example of jazz and rap fusion.

Thirty-five years after its release, the album’s appeal lies partly in how effortless it still sounds. The bass is deep, the rhymes are playful and incisive, and the chemistry between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg remains unmistakable.

Cindy Crawford‘s son, Presley Gerber, has died at the age of 27.

TMZ was first to report the news on Sunday, Sept. 20.

In a statement to the outlet, a representative for the supermodel, her husband Rande Gerber, and daughter Kaia Gerber said in a statement, “The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.”

What is Presley Gerber’s cause of death?

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Presley died Sunday at a rehab facility. An autopsy has not yet been completed, and no further information is available at this time.

In 2024, Presley revealed that he had battled a severe opiate addiction for several years and experienced a near-fatal fentanyl overdose that left him in a coma for days.

In December 2025, Presley opened up further about his struggles with prescription medication dependency, claiming that he had seen more than 15 different psychiatrists who allegedly heavily medicated him without providing a structured path to recovery. He also said that he had been sober from alcohol for five months, with his last drink being in July 2025.

Presley also discussed his mental health and substance use in a December 2025 video posted to Instagram, revealing that he had been taking several depressant medications, including Buprenorphine, Xanax and Valium, to treat panic attacks.

“Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently, so that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now,” he said at the time, adding that he wanted his video to reach “people in many ways.”

“A. So you feel like you’re not alone, because that is how I feel most of the time and I have a feeling that if I say all of this, a lot of people will at least know that there’s someone else going through it,” he continued. “And the second thing is, hopefully I find some people out here and are willing to help or know someone that can help.”

Kenny Rogers almost didn’t record “Lucille.” When he finally did, he walked into American Studio in Nashville on August 5, 1976, and finished the whole thing in one afternoon. The song had been sitting in Nashville for months without a taker. His producer, Larry Butler, believed in it longer than anyone and kept encouraging Rogers to trust it. Rogers trusted him, and that one afternoon turned out to be the decision that saved his entire career.

Here’s where the song actually came from. Roger Bowling and Hal Bynum had been watching a couple fall apart in public at a Greyhound bus station in Toledo, Ohio. That’s the scene in “Lucille.” The bar. The four hungry children. The crop in the field. Bynum had his own reason for being drawn to it — his own marriage was in trouble, and the opening line had already come to him: “You picked a fine time to leave me.” The bus station gave them the setting and the marriage gave them the feeling. They brought it to Nashville and watched everyone pass on their song. The story was too dark. The woman was leaving her children. Nobody wanted to put that on the radio.

Rogers understood the hesitation. The song wanted country radio to do two things at once — understand why she left and feel the pain she left behind. That wasn’t what the format was doing in 1976. But Butler had been pitching “Lucille” around Nashville long enough to know it was something relatable, so he kept pushing. Rogers went into the studio on August 5. He finished it in one afternoon, with no second session needed. The song was part of his self-titled album in January 1977, then released as a single in January 1977. By early April, it was at No. 1 on the country chart for two weeks. Then it crossed to the pop Hot 100 and climbed to No. 5. Then it went to No. 1 in the UK — something American country songs rarely did.

Rogers’ mom’s name was Lucille. She heard the song on the radio and called her son right away. “Kenneth Ray, what are you doing?” He knew he was in trouble. He explained that the Lucille in the song wasn’t her — she was a fictional woman in a bar who walked out on her family, and that he had nothing to do with writing it. His mother remained skeptical. Years later, songwriter Hal Bynum confirmed that the name had nothing to do with Rogers’ mother.

The Song Nobody Wanted to Record

The very song that Nashville said was ‘too dark’ for radio won every single major award country music had to offer. “Lucille” won the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance at the 1978 ceremony, and it also won the CMA Award for Single of the Year. In addition, it won the ACM Award for Single of the Year.

Roger Bowling — who gave the song its Toledo bus station scene and went on to write Rogers’ next big hit “Coward of the County” — received a terminal cancer diagnosis in 1981 and died in December 1982 at the age of 38. He lived to see “Lucille” become a massive success before his death. Rogers went on to record “The Gambler,” “Lady,” and “Islands in the Stream” with Dolly Parton. He died March 20, 2020, at age 81. But his career had nearly been over before any of it happened. One afternoon in Nashville changed that.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers entered a sprawling Los Angeles mansion to make an album—and drummer Chad Smith decided he wanted no part of spending the night there.

Released on Sept. 24, 1991, Blood Sugar Sex Magik elevated Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante and Chad Smith from underground favorites to international rock stars.

According to Rhino’s history of the album, producer Rick Rubin moved the sessions into an allegedly haunted mansion in Laurel Canyon. The unconventional setup allowed the musicians to live, write and record together, away from the rules and schedules of a traditional studio.

The arrangement suited Flea.

“Just play music. That had always been the dream,” the bassist recalled. “It was more than I ever could have imagined.”

Smith, however, was less enthusiastic about sleeping there.

The drummer told the Los Angeles Times, as quoted by Rhino, that two purported paranormal investigators visited the property and entered his bathroom. Both reportedly claimed that “something really bad” had happened there.

“That was all I needed to hear,” Smith said. “I was like, ‘I’m out of here.’”

Smith began sleeping at home while his bandmates remained at the mansion.

The unusual sessions produced “Give It Away,” “Under the Bridge,” “Suck My Kiss” and “Breaking the Girl.” Rhino reports that the album eventually reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Thirty-five years later, Blood Sugar Sex Magik remains both a career-making record and one of rock’s strangest recording stories: four musicians, one isolated mansion and a drummer who decided the alleged ghosts could keep his room.

Presley Gerber, the only son of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, died on Sunday, September 20.

According to TMZ, the 27-year-old model died while receiving treatment at a rehab facility.

Shortly after the news broke, the Crawford-Gerber family released a statement via their rep, telling the outlet, “The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.”

Prior to his tragic death, Presley opened up about his battles with drug addiction and his mental health struggles.

“Here’s some clarity for ya — the truth will set you free (hopefully) haha,” he shared in December 2025. “The benzos have been fluctuating up and down depending on what’s been going on in my life. Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently, so that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now.”

He went on to share that Xanax for panic attacks, followed by valium the next morning, was his pattern of choice.

“The doctors say a lot of different things, so it’s kind of scary, but hopefully between my research and their research … and God, we can figure this out,” he added. “The things that scare me are the things you need to take … if you don’t take them, something not good happens. And there’s a spectrum there on how intense the withdrawal from certain medications is.”

Presley added that he required a strict regimen because any “leeway” from a prescribing doctor was a recipe for failure.

“I need some direction,” he continued.

Presley’s famous mother commented on the since-deleted Instagram post, “Presley — we love you and you are not alone. 😘.”

In his first public appearance since Lindsay Clancy’s mistrial, her ex-husband Patrick Clancy spoke to 60 Minutes. Seated beside his new wife, Dr. Rachel Danis, Patrick answered “yes” when CBS’s Ross Douthat asked if the couple were “starting a family.”

The 60 Minutes appearance comes only two weeks after Lindsay’s mistrial, in which she is accused of killing her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. 

“I really thought there was a chance that Callan would live,” Patrick said during the interview. “I remember just thinking, ‘Just give me one. Just give me one kid, and I would raise him as best I could, and I would give him the best life I possibly could. I’d tell him about his brother and sister.’ And I was holding out hope for that.”

Although Danis stayed out of the spotlight during the trial, she spoke out during the 60 Minutes interview, saying she tried to “take some of the weight from Pat.”

“I can’t bring his kids back,” Danis said. “But if I can honor them and allow Pat to grieve but also just continue to honor them in the present, it, I guess that’s all I can do.”

As the couple looks ahead to starting a family together, Patrick said he’ll tell his future child about Cora, Dawson and Callan.

“I think every parent can agree, you have different relationships with your kids, but they’re all your kids,” Patrick said. “And I can’t wait to tell them about their brothers and sister.”

Danis, who met Patrick in Central Park following the 2023 tragedy, works as a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at RMA of New York, Parade reported. The couple married in April 2026 at the Ladies Pavilion in Central Park.

Describing her first time meeting Patrick, Danis said, “I was just a girl that met a guy running in Central Park on a really cold Saturday, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.”

Presley opened up about his mental health struggles in a since-deleted Instagram post claiming, “honesty is the best policy.”

“Here’s some clarity for ya — the truth will set you free (hopefully) haha,” he wrote in December 2025. “The benzos have been fluctuating up and down depending on what’s been going on in my life.”

He went on to share that he often takes Xanax “when the panic attacks are really, really bad” and follows with “a little bit” of valium in the morning.

“I don’t know if it’s a little bit or a lot, who f–king knows at this point anymore,” he continued. “The doctors say a lot of different things, so it’s kind of scary, but hopefully between my research and their research … and God, we can figure this out. The things that scare me are the things you need to take … if you don’t take them, something not good happens. And there’s a spectrum there on how intense the withdrawal from certain medications is.”

In addition to his dependency on prescription drugs, Presley revealed that he distanced himself from Hollywood in order to protect his mental health.

“Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently. So that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now,” he shared. “I’ve grown up in Hollywood, and there’s a lot of people around me that I love to death, but right now I try not to be around them.”

In August, Presley’s only sister, Kaia Gerber, made rare comments to Vogue about her brother’s “decade-long struggle with drug addiction.”

“When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,” she explained. “I think that’s also why I started to self-​identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.”

In January 2019, Presley was arrested for DUI in Beverly Hills after failing a field sobriety test. The then-19-year-old was sentenced to 3 years of probation and ordered to complete a DUI program.

During his December 2025 statement, Presley revealed that he was on “four classes of medication”—blood pressure, opioid, benzos and antidepressant.

“I am hoping this reaches people in many ways,” he added at the time. “A: so you feel like you’re not alone, because that is how I feel most of the time. I have a feeling if I say all of this, a lot of people will at least know that there’s someone else going through it. And the second thing is, hopefully I find some people out here and are willing to help or know someone that can help.”

He previously revealed his wish to help others during a February 2023 interview on the Studio 22 podcast, saying, “I think that whether I help one person or a hundred people get out of that place that I was in at one point in my life, that’s all I need to do.”

“That really what I want to do—help people, whether you’re depressed, you’re struggling with something that is having a negative effect on your body. I mean it could be anything, and there’s no judgment,” he explained at the time. “I’ve seen a lot of stuff and I’ve learned a lot of things. What I hope I can do is have made the mistakes for other people, so they don’t have to make the same mistakes that I made.”

Presley’s cause of death is not yet known.

William Shatner has been making records for more than half a century, and just last month he announced a spoken-word album, Love & Other Mysteries, co-produced by Brad Paisley.

This weekend he went somewhere much louder. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the 95-year-old fronted a heavy metal band for the first time, at a Riot Fest after show at Park West in Chicago.

The Covers He Chose

The set included covers of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train,” Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades” and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” Shatner also reworked songs from his own catalog and previewed tracks from an upcoming heavy metal album.

“I have explored space. I have explored time. Now … I explore distortion,” Shatner wrote on social media.

The band behind him is led by guitarist and musical director Marcus Nand, who has worked with Mike Tramp and Candice Night. Phil Soussan plays bass, Britt Lightning of Vixen plays guitar and Fred Aching of Kings of Thrash and Dead Groove plays drums.

From Park West to Douglass Park

Saturday was a warm-up. On Sunday night he played Riot Fest itself at Douglass Park, and the festival posted video from the set to Instagram.

It had taken a while to get him there. Riot Fest said booking him took “years of persistent letter writing,” and its July announcement teased that his rider was demanding. When the news went public, Shatner promised a Black Sabbath cover.

Chicago may not be the last stop. During a CNN appearance this summer, anchor Elex Michaelson asked whether the band would play the big desert festival, and Shatner and his daughter answered together: “Coachella.” The festival has not announced its 2027 lineup.

A Very Different Anniversary Year

All of this is happening in the 60th anniversary year of Star Trek. Shatner has spent part of it looking back, reuniting with George Takei and Walter Koenig for the show’s birthday and revisiting the detail NBC wanted gone.

He flew to space at 90. At 95, he found distortion.

Few albums have overturned the musical establishment as dramatically as Nirvana’s Nevermind.

Released in the United States on Sept. 24, 1991, the album introduced millions of listeners to Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl—and transformed three musicians from the Pacific Northwest into one of the biggest bands in the world.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” became unavoidable on radio and MTV, while “Come as You Are,” “Lithium” and “In Bloom” helped turn Nevermind into a cultural phenomenon.

Then came the chart upset few could have anticipated.

According to a Pitchfork analysis of the historic chart change, Nevermind reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated Jan. 11, 1992, knocking Michael Jackson’s heavily promoted album Dangerous from the top spot.

The timing revealed the power of Nirvana’s young audience. Pitchfork reported that the sales used for that chart were collected from Dec. 23 through Dec. 29, 1991—just as teenagers were heading to record stores with holiday money and gift cards.

The publication described Nirvana as one of the earliest major beneficiaries of what writer Chris Molanphy called “Kid Season,” the post-holiday period when younger listeners exert greater influence over the charts.

Thirty-five years later, Nevermind remains inseparable from the moment alternative rock moved from the margins into the center of popular culture.

Two decades after John Tucker Must Die hit theaters, Jesse Metcalfe knows exactly which former costars he would like to work with again.

The 47-year-old actor singled out Arielle Kebbel, Penn Badgley and Brittany Snow while speaking with People in a September 19 interview.

“I’d love to work with Arielle Kebbel again,” Metcalfe said, noting that the two still speak occasionally.

He also praised Badgley, who played John’s younger brother, Scott, and said he would welcome another opportunity to work with Snow.

“I really love the entire cast,” Metcalfe added. “I’m always open to reconnect with them.”

The actors starred together in the 2006 teen comedy about three high school students who discover that basketball star John Tucker has been secretly dating all of them. They recruit Snow’s character, Kate, to help expose and humiliate him.

Metcalfe’s comments arrive as the film celebrates its 20th anniversary—and amid lingering questions about a possible sequel.

He confirmed that a sequel script exists at 20th Century Fox and said Kebbel had attempted to spearhead the project. Although Metcalfe likes the script and believes audiences want another movie, he acknowledged that the project has lost momentum.

Kebbel previously explained that the sequel was moving forward before the writers’ strike, with the original cast prepared to return. The studio’s plans subsequently changed, and the film was shelved.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it is dead.

Kebbel said the pause was not permanent and maintained that she still believes its moment will come.

Metcalfe sounds similarly open to returning. He isn’t losing sleep over whether the sequel happens, but said participating would “certainly be fun.”

For fans who have waited 20 years, that leaves at least a little hope that John Tucker may face his former classmates again.

The Eagles’ 1976 rock song “The Last Resort,” with a running time of more than seven minutes, stands as one of the band’s most ambitious recordings, continuing to resonate with a new wave of listeners nearly five decades after its release.

Released as an album track on the critically acclaimed Hotel California, the song did not reach the same chart heights as the Eagles’ biggest hits, including “Hotel California,” “Best Of My Love,” “One Of These Nights,” “New Kid In Town” and “Heartache Tonight,” and did not debut on the Billboard chart.

However, despite being an album track, one factor that has helped “The Last Resort” remain popular is its deeply thought-provoking message.

Written by the Eagles’ co-founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey, the song explores the pursuit of land and westward development, as well as their impact on Native American communities and the environment.

According to a 1978 interview with Rolling Stone, the musician described “The Last Resort” as one of his favorite songs because of its message about the environment.

“That’s because I care more about the environment than about writing songs about drugs or love affairs or excesses of any kind,” Henley explained, via Songfacts. “The gist of the song was that when we find something good, we destroy it by our presence – by the very fact that man is the only animal on earth that is capable of destroying his environment. The environment is the reason I got into politics: to try to do something about what I saw as the complete destruction of most of the resources that we have left. We have mortgaged our future for gain and greed.”

This was echoed by the late Eagles member Glenn Frey, who noted in an interview that the band was also involved in anti-nuclear benefit concerts at the time.

“It seemed the perfect way to wrap up all of the different topics we had explored on the Hotel California album,” he explained, per Far Out Magazine.

From its meaningful lyrics to its distinction as the longest track on the Hotel California album, “The Last Resort” remains a memorable Eagles classic, earning a place among the Best Eagles Songs featured in Rolling Stone’s 40 Greatest Eagles Songs and Ultimate Classic Rock’s Eagles Album Closing Songs Ranked Worst to Best.

Sixty-one years ago, English beat-rock band Herman’s Hermits released “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter”—a song that dominated the charts and became a lasting staple of its era.

“Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” was initially released in March 1965 as an album track on their debut U.S. self-titled studio record. After receiving significant traction from radio airplay, the track was issued as an official single. By April 17, the song had debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, quickly climbing to peak at No. 1, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks.

The single wasn’t just a dominating force on the charts, but a commercial phenomenon as well. Since its release, the song has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. On June 16, 1965, it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Creating “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter”

“Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” was recorded by Herman’s Hermits when lead singer Peter Noone was just 17 years old. Produced by Mickie Most, Noone’s youthful charm and heavy Manchester accent added to the track’s distinctive, lighthearted beat-pop sound.

Written by British actor and songwriter Trevor Peacock, the song was initially penned for the 1963 television play The Lads, where it was performed by Tom Courtenay. The track tells the story of a heartbroken young man who has to explain to his ex-girlfriend’s mother that her daughter no longer loves him.

Lines like “Mrs. Brown, you’ve got a lovely daughter / Girls as sharp as her are something rare / But it’s sad / She doesn’t love me now” highlight its themes of unrequited love, making for a quintessential heartbreak anthem that remains memorable.

Melissa Rivers isn’t naming names—but she remembers exactly what she said when a major actress confronted her over Fashion Police.

During a September 13 appearance on the McBride Rewind podcast, Rivers recalled encountering a celebrity who wasn’t pleased about the show’s critique of her red-carpet look.

“I’ve had a big actress confront me at a party,” Rivers said. Her response was direct: “I didn’t like your dress.”

Rivers, 58, also remembered a particularly uncomfortable flight she took with her late mother, Joan Rivers, the morning after an awards show.

Dolly Parton is being memorialized in her beloved home away from home: California.

Governor Gavin Newsom, announced on Sunday, September 20, that September 25 will forever be known as “Dolly Parton Day” in the Golden State—an homage to her sit song and film “9 to 5.”

“Dolly Parton was an icon. Dolly was larger than life with big hair and a bigger heart,” he said in a video announcement shared via Instagram.

“People around the world have been touched by her music, by her philanthropy, and by her humor,” Newson’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, added.

Gavin continued, “There are few more memorable people than Dolly. So, when it came to giving her an official day in California, there was really only one date that made any sense.”

Hailey Bieber is heading into fall with a dramatically different look.

The 29-year-old Rhode founder unveiled glossy, espresso-infused hair believed to be the darkest shade she has worn in more than a decade.

Celebrity hairstylist Irinel de León revealed Bieber’s transformation, which features long, sweeping layers and added volume around her face. Extension specialist Priscilla Valles supplied several additional inches of length and fullness, while colorist Matt Rez created the deep chocolate-brown shade.

The finished look marks a significant departure from the warm blonde, caramel and lighter brunette colors Bieber has worn over the years.

According to Vogue, Bieber previously wore an almost-black brunette shade to the 2015 Met Gala. More recently, however, she has favored chestnut tones and strategically placed highlights.

The dramatic change comes after Bieber told followers this summer that she was on a “hair health journey.” She had been allowing her natural brunette hair to grow and avoiding major changes.

Brooks has talked about spending two hours onstage working hard for the crowd, only to have Yearwood appear near the end of the show and receive the biggest reaction of the night. And rather than seeing that as a competition, Brooks seems genuinely delighted that his wife can walk out and command the room.

“He will keep saying it. He busts his butt for 2 hours and she arrives and gets the biggest reaction of the night. He loves it too,” shared one fan on social media.

Honestly, there’s something pretty great about that.

After decades in the spotlight, Brooks doesn’t seem bothered by the idea of being upstaged. If anything, he appears to take genuine pleasure in watching Yearwood get just as much attention — and sometimes more — than he does.

Even though spring flowers bloom in the spring, they don’t do that by magic—for many species of spring flowers, they actually need to be planted months in advance in order to bloom after winter ends.

In fact, a number of spring flowers actually do best when planted around this time of year, in September/early fall. But which ones?

To learn more, Parade spoke with two expert gardeners: Brandy Hall, a gardener, the Founder and CEO of Atlanta-based regenerative landscaping company Shades of Green Permaculture and the author of The Complete Guide to Home Permaculture; and Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, a gardener, gardening coach and blogger at Hoosier Gardener.

“September, and fall in general, is a great time for planting,” Hall tells Parade.

Why Some Spring Flowers Should Be Planted In September

In September, “the soil is still warm from summer and rainfall is often more reliable, which allows plants to focus on building strong root systems instead of simply surviving the heat,” Hall explains. “In fact, roots continue growing long after above-ground growth begins to slow down, giving plants a head start before spring arrives.”

Since her permaculture company is focused on regenerative and ecologically sound landscaping practices, Hall notes that she’s “always asking what nature is already doing and how we can work with those cycles rather than against them.” Going off of this, Hall views fall as “a season of preparation.”

During fall, “plants are settling in, storing energy and investing below ground for what’s to come so when we plant during this time, we’re aligning with that natural rhythm,” she adds. “In that way, we’re supporting long-term soil health, creating habitat, and helping landscapes become more resilient and self-sustaining over time.”

Gardeners Say September Is the Perfect Time to Plant These 7 Spring Flowers 1. Coneflowers

The coneflower, part of the Echinacea genus, is “one of the best native perennials to plant in early fall because it uses the cooler temperatures to establish a strong root system before winter,” Hall explains.

“By the time spring arrives, the plant is already settled in and ready to put energy into healthy top growth and blooms,” she adds. “Their blooms provide months of color in the summer and pollinators love them!”

If you plan to add coneflower to your spring garden, Hall recommends planting them in well-draining soil right now while there’s still lots of sunshine. Over the next few weeks, you should water them regularly, but “avoid overwatering.” And to make sure your garden is benefiting your community, you can “leave spent flower heads standing through winter to provide food for birds and habitat for beneficial insects.”

2. Spring-flowering bulbs

“If there’s anything people should plant in fall it’s spring-flowering bulbs,” says Sharp. Namely, she recommends planting daffodils and tulips, which “need to be planted in fall because they must go through a cold period. The cold triggers the blooming mechanism in the bulbs.”

To plant spring bulbs this autumn, Sharp advises planting the bulbs in the ground “about three times deeper than their height.” So if your tulip bulb is around 2 inches tall, plant it 6 inches deep.

She also says that “full sun is best,” so if your yard is shady, it’s important to plant early-season bloomers before the days get too short, and to always water well. “Planting them now allows them to settle in before the ground freezes,” she adds.

3. Blazing star

When planted in the fall, blazing star flowers—also known as gayfeather or Liatris—can then “spend the cooler months developing roots, which helps it emerge stronger and more resilient the following growing season.” Plus, blazing star is “one of the most valuable native plants for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.”

To plant blazing star in the fall, you should do so in full sun and well-drained soil, says Hall.

“Liatris is drought-tolerant once established and generally requires very little maintenance,” she explains. “Leave foliage and stems in place over winter to support wildlife and protect the crown of the plant.”

4. Coral bells

Coral bells (Heuchera), a perennial native to North America, “sends up stalks of bell-shaped flowers that hummingbirds visit early in the season,” according to Sharp.

“Coral bells are great additions to the shade garden and they tolerate part sun,” she explains. “Depending on your winters, most coral bells are evergreen or semi-evergreen.” Additionally, the foliage color of coral bells “changes throughout the season to add more interest throughout summer.”

Sharp advises planting coral bells in an area that gets plenty of shade. “Plant the root ball in the ground the same depth it was growing in the nursery pot,” she says, adding that you should make sure to water well.

And if your coral bells manage to “heave themselves out of the ground” during the winter months, there’s no need to worry. You can simply “gently push it back into the soil,” she says.

5. Tickseed

According to Hall, planting tickseed (Coreopsis) in autumn “gives the roots time to establish while the soil is still warm, resulting in stronger plants and better flowering the following year.” Additionally, the plant has a long bloom period, which “makes it a reliable source of nectar for pollinators throughout the growing season.”

To plant tickseed this month, look for a sunny spot in your yard and make sure to “avoid overly rich soils, which can lead to floppy growth,” says Hall. As the plant establishes, water it healthily, and then “allow the plant to adapt to natural rainfall patterns.”

For this plant, Hall recommends deadheading some of your flowers, but not all of them. “Deadheading can encourage additional blooms, but leaving some seed heads provides wildlife value,” she says.

6. Lungwort

“As unattractive as its name may sound, lungwort (Pulmonaria spp.) is a lovely spring blooming perennial with usually blue, but sometimes pink or white flowers,” says Sharp. “Another shade-tolerant plant, lungwort’s leaves have gray spots, which were thought to resemble sick lungs, earning it the common name.”

She adds that lungwort is a good companion for spring bulbs, ferns and hostas.

To plant lungwort in your garden this autumn, Sharp says to “plant in the ground the same depth it was growing in the nursery pot” and to water generously.

7. Beardtongue

Hall says that beardtongue (Penstemon spp.) is one of her “favorite native plants because it is beautiful, resilient and has great ecological value.”

“Its flowers attract hummingbirds and native bees, and its deep root system helps build healthy soil and improve drought tolerance,” she adds. “Fall planting allows the plant to establish roots during its natural growth cycle rather than trying to cope with summer heat.”

To plant beardtongue in September, you should do so “in full sun to part sun with excellent drainage,” per Hall. Additionally, make sure to avoid overwatering, and “resist the urge to cut everything back in fall—standing stems provide winter habitat for beneficial insects.”

President Donald Trump hasn’t been exactly shy about his eating habits, even going as far to have back-and-forth public tiffs with his own administration’s health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK).

The playful jabs have been good-natured, but the commander in chief’s diet may need a sprinkle of nature itself.

Tony Senecal, the former butler of Trump for nearly 20 years, long before his inauguration, alleges his diet hasn’t changed since he took over the job.

Of course, with a notorious “Diet Coke button” at his Oval Office desk, expectations may need to be tempered.

Trump once dabbled in a venture called Trump Steaks well before becoming president, and that aligns with Senecal’s description of his eating habits, stating in an Inside Edition interview that “He’s a red-blooded, meat-eating American.”

Going so far as to say Trump is a “picky eater”, despite being a world leader and presumably being able to order anything at any time, Trump keeps it simple, even ordering his steaks well done.

According to Senecal, “It was pretty much, ‘Tony, bring me a cheeseburger and don’t forget the ketchup.’ If it’s vegetables, he doesn’t want to see them. That’s pretty much it.”

That’s right—Trump won’t touch vegetables. He can’t even use vodka as a loophole since the man has long stated he doesn’t drink for fear of becoming an alcoholic as alcoholism runs in his family.

French fries, though?

That seems to be the only exception to the rule as the president notoriously loves ordering fast food, even on Air Force One.
