Sandra Bullock’s Birthday Message to Nicole Kidman Fuels ‘Practical Magic 2’ Excitement

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 3:42pm

On June 20, Nicole Kidman turned 59. The prolific actress posted a photo of herself enjoying nature and sunshine along with a caption, "Another trip around the sun." While many of her longtime friends, such as Reese Witherspoon and Naomi Watts, wished her a happy birthday, fans are especially taking notice of Sandra Bullock's Instagram tribute.

A 'Practical Magic 2' Birthday Shoutout

With less than three months to go until the release of Practical Magic 2, many are thrilled that she referenced the film in her sweet birthday shoutout to her co-star and screen sister.

"Happy birthday to my witchy sister," she captioned her video montage. "Call it magic when I'm next to you." Along with a pink heart, she posted a magic wand emoji.

View this post on Instagram

The videos show Kidman, Joey King, Bullock, and what appears to be other cast members dancing and having a great time at a performance at the Las Vegas Sphere. Another shows Kidman and Bullock shooting as Gillian and Sally Owens, hugging and being affectionate. Interspersed throughout are scenes from the upcoming film.

King will portray Kylie Owens in the sequel, a role that was played by Evan Rachel Wood in the 1998 film. King posted her own message to her onscreen aunt. "Happy birthday to the most stunning person outside and in [Nicole Kidman]," she captioned her Instagram story.

'Right Back Into It'

The two actresses hadn't worked with each other on anything since Practical Magic, but they both said that they'd longed to reunite. They called making the sequel a fun experience, with Kidman saying that the duo really are "like sisters."

"We were just right back into it," she told PEOPLE. "I adore her and she is so funny and so lovable. And we're just having the best time together."

In a resurfaced interview, TODAY shared a clip of Bullock talking about their friendship. She stated that the alcohol they consumed during reshoots helped them bond.

"The fact is, we don't have anything in common, except for at the dinner table with a bottle of wine and everything blends sort of together," she explained.

"And Nicole just put the bottle on the table and said, ‘You know what? There’s no reason we shouldn’t be drunk here.’ And I said, ‘You know what? That’s true," Bullock added.

Decades after their first pairing, Bullock's birthday message proves that the bond between the Practical Magic sisters remains as strong as ever. With the highly anticipated sequel just around the corner, the genuine affection between Kidman, Bullock, and their new castmates promises a magical return to the screen.

'The Traitors' Star Says He Lost His Life Savings in a Devastating Scam

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 3:40pm

The Traitors UK contestant Sam Little is opening up about a devastating financial loss after revealing that he was scammed out of £40,000—money he says represented his entire life savings.

In an interview with BBC News, the season 4 cast member shared details of the incident, explaining how fraudsters convinced him they were contacting him on behalf of his bank before stealing the funds.

Little appeared on the most recent civilian season of the hit BBC reality competition series, where he competed as a Faithful before being banished in episode eight. His story comes as interest in the franchise continues to grow, with Parade recently reporting that The Traitors will launch its first-ever civilian season this fall.

Sam Little Says the Scam Cost Him £40,000

According to Little, the ordeal began in January, the same month The Traitors aired, when he received a series of text messages that appeared to come from his bank. The messages warned that someone was attempting to access his account and encouraged him to get in touch.

Speaking to BBC News, Little said the scammers appeared legitimate because they never asked for passwords or verification codes. "They didn't ask me for any passwords, they didn't ask me for any verification codes," he explained.

Little said the fraudsters somehow gained access to a webpage he regularly used, making the scheme appear even more convincing.

"They were somehow able to hack into the web page I would normally interact with. Before I knew it, the phone went dead and everything had gone," he said.

The reality TV star described the experience as emotionally devastating. "It feels like your world's just collapsing," Little told the outlet. "You work solidly for years to build this up, and it's just gone."

The Reality Star Wants Others to Learn From His Experience

Little admitted that he previously believed he was knowledgeable enough to avoid scams but now feels anyone can become a victim. "I thought I was savvy," he said, adding that scammers can "catch anyone."

"It's really scary."

According to the report, Little filed a complaint with Report Fraud, but an investigation has not yet begun. When contacted by the BBC, the organization said it was conducting a manual review of the case and noted that cryptocurrency-related fraud can be particularly complex to investigate.

The incident comes amid growing concern about cryptocurrency scams in the United Kingdom. Report Fraud warns that crypto investment fraud is among the fastest-growing forms of fraud in the country, and victims often face significant challenges recovering lost funds.

While Little has not recovered the money, he hopes sharing his story will help others avoid similar situations. His experience serves as a reminder that even people who consider themselves cautious and informed can become targets of increasingly sophisticated scams.

Dua Lipa Stuns in First Wedding Photos With Callum Turner in Sicily: 'Jaw Dropped'

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 3:26pm

After one week of waiting, Dua Lipa has finally shared the first photos from her wedding to Callum Turner.

Lipa and Turner officially tied the knot on Sunday, May 31, in a private civil wedding in London. But the festivities didn’t end there. The couple hosted a three-day wedding in Palermo, Sicily, last weekend, reportedly at the Villa Valguarnera, according to Vogue.

Photos from the wedding were taken by David Sims, a British fashion photographer. Lipa shared the photos on Instagram with simply the caption, “Mr & Mrs.”

The first photo shows Turner and Lipa sharing a sweet moment beneath her veil, while another shows the couple opening a bottle of champagne with friends. The post gained over eight million likes within the first five hours, with fans and friends flocking to the comment section to share their congratulations.

“JAW DROPPED,” Dalia Shawky commented. “Congratulations beautiful! Happy hearts forever!”

Elton John, who, according to Vanity Fair, sang his hit song “Your Love” at the ceremony, also commented.

“Congratulations, an honour to have been there to celebrate your love,” the artist wrote.

View this post on Instagram

Since the photos dropped, fans have been obsessed with Lipa’s dresses for the three-day wedding weekend. On the first night, the couple had welcome drinks with their friends, where Lipa wore a white leather dress made by Bottega Veneta. At brunch on Sunday, she wore a custom Chloé dress, and for her actual wedding, she wore Chanel’s first ever haute couture wedding dress designed by Matthieu Blazy.

“The dress featured an intricate low back and fell into a sweeping, feather-dappled train,” Vogue wrote. “Lipa also wore a feather-detailed headpiece and a long embroidered veil.”

Lipa’s dress was entirely hand-embroidered with 480,000 beads, Vogue said. The l’oeil jewels required 1,155 hours of needlework by Lesage, and the dress featured 25,000 feathers by Lemarié.

“Your dress is just everything,” one fan commented on Instagram.

I Tried Every Olive Garden Soup and Ranked Them Worst To Best

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 3:18pm

Soup is often considered a cold-weather staple, but I've always enjoyed eating it all year long. As someone who loves the summer heat, I'm not easily fazed by hot dishes on a sweltering day, so I often find myself eating soup during a heat wave. Needless to say, I was all-in when Parade asked me to do a taste test of Olive Garden's four soup varieties.

Olive Garden is known for serving authentic Italian dishes like chicken parmigiana, lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs. The restaurant chain's Soup, Salad and Breadsticks menu item has also gained a loyal following of diners who prefer a lighter meal when they dine out. If you like the best of both worlds, many entrées also come with a choice of soup or salad to kick off your meal.

I don't often eat soup when I go out to eat, probably because I eat it so often at home (tomato soup is my go-to). But I was excited to switch things up a bit. Many years ago, I tried Olive Garden's Chicken & Gnocchi soup, and was pretty fond of it. But I hadn't tested the other three yet, so I was ready to see how the rest of them measured up.

How I Tested the Olive Garden Soups

Since I'm a bit of a picky eater, I grabbed my friend Julie, who is much more adventurous, to offer two different perspectives on the soups. We headed to our nearest Olive Garden and tried all four soups, paired with the restaurant's famous garlic breadsticks.

We tried the soups in the following order:

  • Chicken & Gnocchi
  • Zuppa Toscana
  • Pasta e Fagioli
  • Minestrone

After tasting each soup, we compared notes and ranked them from our favorite to least favorite.

What Kind of Soup Does Olive Garden Have?

Olive Garden offers four homemade soup varieties on its menu:

  • Pasta e Fagioli: "White and red beans, ground beef, fresh tomatoes and tubetti pasta in a savory broth."
  • Zuppa Toscana: "Spicy Italian sausage, kale and potatoes in a creamy broth. Made without gluten-containing ingredients."
  • Minestrone: "Fresh vegetables, beans and pasta in a light tomato broth."
  • Chicken & Gnocchi: "A creamy soup made with roasted chicken, Italian dumplings and spinach."

Customers can enjoy a bowl of soup or salad with many entrées. If you only want to have soup for lunch, you can also order the unlimited Soup and Salad and Breadsticks ($11.49) menu item between 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or, you can order the Soup and Salad and Breadsticks ($13.99) menu item any day of the week at other times.

When ordering these two menu items, customers can enjoy multiple varieties of soup. For instance, you can try all four soups in a row.

Can You Really Buy a Gallon of Soup from Olive Garden?

Yes! Whether you want enough soup to last you several days or you're hosting a party, Olive Garden sells its soups by the gallon. Each item serves 12 people and retails for $33.49.

Every Olive Garden Soup, Ranked Worst To Best

Here's our official ranking based on our taste-test of all four soup options at Olive Garden.

4. Minestrone Soup

Courtesy Chrissy Callahan

My review of the soup: Out of the four soups Julie and I tested, the minestrone soup was our least favorite. We were both clear to note that it wasn't bad; it simply had some stiff competition.

The minestrone soup is a great option for vegetarians or if you're in the mood for something light and packed with veggies. The broth is a tad salty and watery compared to the thicker soup varieties, but the veggies are nice and soft and the pasta is tasty and tender.

3. Zuppa Toscana Soup

Courtesy Chrissy Callahan

How Olive Garden describes the soup: "Spicy Italian sausage, kale and potatoes in a creamy broth. Made without gluten-containing ingredients."

My review of the soup: I'm not usually a fan of sausage but it gave the soup's broth a little spicy kick that wasn't overpowering. The base of the soup isn't as creamy as the Chicken & Gnocchi soup, but it's slightly creamier than a typical broth.

My favorite part of the soup was the extra soft potatoes. I don't normally eat kale, but when submerged in the broth, it was soft and I could see myself eating it in soup form in the future.

2. Pasta e Fagioli Soup

Courtesy Chrissy Callahan

How Olive Garden describes the soup: "White and red beans, ground beef, fresh tomatoes and tubetti pasta in a savory broth."

My review of the soup: As soon as we started eating the Pasta e Fagioli soup, Julie wisely declared that it was "perfect for a cold winter day" since it's nice and hearty. My mom makes a mean chop suey with tomato soup and ground beef and this reminded me a bit of that flavor, except with a small kick to it.

I enjoyed the beef and tubetti pasta, both of which were cooked to perfection, and even found myself liking the beans (a surprise for a picky eater like me). I've never been a fan of tomatoes, but it was easy to skip around them.

1. Chicken & Gnocchi Soup

Courtesy Chrissy Callahan

How Olive Garden describes the soup: "A creamy soup made with roasted chicken, Italian dumplings and spinach."

My review of the soup: Julie and I began our tasting with the Chicken & Gnocchi soup. Going into this experience, I'd previously tried this particular soup in years past, so I already had an idea of what it tasted like, but this was my first time eating it in many years.

Both of us were instantly fans of the smooth, creamy base, and I enjoyed dipping the garlic breadsticks in it. The gnocchi was incredibly soft and pillowy (just the way I like it), and the chicken was nice and tender.

I'm not normally a huge fan of spinach, but it added a touch of subtle flavor. I'm also not a big veggie gal, but the celery and carrots were ultra soft and made me think that I should really try hiding veggies in my soups at home to increase my veggie intake.

I enjoyed the gnocchi so much that I wished there were a few more pieces in the soup. Honestly, the gnocchi was so good that I'm surprised Olive Garden hasn't made it one of their pasta dishes!

'80s Metal Band Announces 2026 Tour With Special Guests

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 3:13pm

Heathen has no plans of slowing down, even after its upcoming run with Metal Church.

The Bay Area thrash metal veterans have announced a new string of North American headlining dates for summer 2026, with support from Louisiana metal band Void on most shows. The newly announced run begins July 27 in Raleigh, North Carolina, following Heathen's co-headlining dates with Metal Church, and concludes Aug. 9 in Toronto.

"Immediately following our run of dates with Metal Church, we'll be headlining more of North America with support from Void!” the band wrote on Instagram. "Get your tickets now and we'll see you in the pit!"

The new headlining trek follows a series of performances alongside fellow thrash pioneers Metal Church across the United States and Canada, giving fans an extended opportunity to catch Heathen on the road this summer.

View this post on Instagram

Formed in San Francisco in 1984, Heathen emerged during the second wave of the Bay Area thrash movement alongside bands such as Exodus, Testament and Death Angel.

While the group never reached the commercial heights of some of its contemporaries, albums including Breaking the Silence and Victims of Deception earned Heathen a devoted following thanks to the band's technical musicianship, intricate songwriting and melodic approach to thrash metal.

After disbanding in the early 1990s, Heathen reunited in 2001 and has remained an active force in the genre ever since. The band's most recent studio album, Empire of the Blind, was released in 2020 to widespread critical acclaim, introducing its brand of progressive thrash to a new generation of listeners.

"The songs and the albums are very much a big part of me," singer David White said in an interview. "When I look back it’s an evolution of what we've done and how far we’ve come, another step towards…well whatever, really. It's another piece of art that we’ve done and we’re trying to achieve a superior record than before."

More than four decades after first forming, Heathen continues to build on its legacy through relentless touring and new music. With a full North American itinerary stretching across July and August, the band is showing that one of thrash metal's most respected names remains as active as ever.

Beloved BBC Star Provides Health Update After Revealing 'Aggressive' Cancer Diagnosis

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 3:13pm

Just days after shocking viewers with a somber update on the season finale of Clarkson's Farm, Jeremy Clarkson is offering fans some reassuring news.

The longtime BBC television personality took to Instagram on Saturday, June 20, with an important video message after delivering the shocking news of his aggressive prostate cancer diagnosis.

Clarkson began his video update by dryly saying, "Now the more observant among you will have noticed that I'm not dead."

View this post on Instagram

The 66-year-old quickly reassured fans that his prognosis is positive. "And I'm not just not dead, I'm perfectly fine," he said. "My eyebrows in particular are looking very lustrous." Clarkson explained that the reason he's doing so well is because doctors were able to catch the cancer early. "And they caught it early because I got tested," he also noted.

The Top Gear alum then used the opportunity to encourage other men to get screened, dismissing outdated fears about prostate exams. "It's just a blood test these days," he explained before urging viewers not to ignore potential warning signs.

His message comes just days after viewers learned that Clarkson had been quietly battling the disease for more than a year. During the final episodes of Clarkson's Farm season five, Clarkson sat down with land agent Charlie Ireland and farm hand Kaleb Cooper and bluntly told them, "I've got cancer." He later explained that the disease had been discovered in May 2025.

According to the series, Clarkson underwent surgery in August 2025 as part of his treatment plan and kept the diagnosis private for more than a year.

Now, with treatment behind him and his health improving, Clarkson is focused on spreading awareness. "10, 12,000 people, men—to be honest—die every year in the UK. From prostate cancer," he said in his latest video. "Don't be one of them. Get tested."

TV Chef's Set To Be A Grandfather For The First Time

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 2:49pm

Gordon Ramsey's daughter Holly has announced she is expecting her first baby with her Olympian husband, Adam Peaty. It is the first grandchild for the Masterchef judge.

Taking to Instagram showing her bump, the 26-year-old announced: "Baby Ramsay-Peaty coming December 2026. We can’t wait to meet our baby girl."  Adam is an English swimmer with three Olympic gold medals and three silvers to his name.

View this post on Instagram

This marks the first child for Holly. Adam has a five-year-old son named George-Anderson Adetola Peaty, born in September 2020, with his ex-partner Eirianedd Munro.

The happy news comes less than one year after Holly married swinner Adam in a lavish ceremony at England’s Bath Abbey in December 2025, where proud dad Gordan walked her down the aisle.

Their wedding hit the headlines after Adam's family refused to attend. As reported by the Independent, some of Adam's family were uninvited by the couple, leaving his mum, Caroline, distressed. She also claimed that she made a speech at her son’s engagement party that was omitted from the TV chef’s Netflix documentary.

Per the Independent, Peaty publicly acknowledged the feud, writing on Instagram that there are “two sides to every story”.

Gordon spoke to the Daily Mailabout the difficult situation. "It's just upsetting. It's all self-inflicted from their side, because we've done nothing – none of what you've read: no rudeness, no ignorance – we welcomed them. We sent a chauffeur-driven car for them to come to the engagement party and treated them like royalty. So to get that barrage of press was very hurtful. Tana took it very seriously."

Holly is one of six children Gordon has with his wife Tana. They welcomed Megan in 1998, Holly and her twin brother Jack in 1999, Tilly in 2001, Oscar in 2019, and Jesse in 2023, according to People.

Summer decorating doesn't have to mean buying all new furniture or spending a fortune on trendy accessories. Sometimes all it takes is one charming piece that instantly makes your space feel brighter and more inviting.

Trader Joe's Limoncello Candle Looks Surprisingly Luxe

The newest home find to hit Trader Joe's is the Limoncello Scented Candle, a limited-edition candle that costs just $9.99. The candle comes in a striped ceramic jar with a matching lid that feels straight out of an Italian beach club. Yes, please!

The design has drawn plenty of comparisons to Anthropologie's fan-favorite Fruity Tuscan Zest Ceramic Candle, which retails for $28. While the scents are slightly different, both candles feature cheerful citrus vibes and decorative ceramic vessels that double as home decor.

Fans on Reddit can't get enough of Trader Joe's version. One person wrote, "Take my money," while another said, "The ceramic makes it feel so luxe." Others admitted they're stocking up on multiples because the jar is just that cute.

The Perfect Candle for Summer 2026

If there's one fragrance dominating summer 2026, it's limoncello. The scent combines bright lemon notes with subtle sweetness, creating an aroma that feels sunny, energizing and nostalgic all at once.

It's also deeply tied to images of Mediterranean vacations and leisurely summer evenings. Trader Joe's leans into that cozy fantasy, suggesting the candle for everything from patio sunset hangs to softly lit dinners at home.

One Reddit user summed it up perfectly, writing that the fragrance smells like what they imagine real limoncello tastes like. That's high praise for a candle that costs less than $10.

Of course, the ceramic container is absolutely the real star of the show. Even after the candle burns down, the striped jar and lid can live on as decor or storage. It would look so cute holding cotton balls or other essentials on the bathroom counter.

For shoppers who love Anthropologie's playful aesthetic but prefer Trader Joe's prices, this limited-edition candle may be one of the best home finds of summer 2026.

Holly Madison Reveals Why She Hasn't Spoken to Kendra Wilkinson in More Than a Decade

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 2:00pm

In recent news, we learned that Kendra Wilkinson has been dealing with a lot, from the body shaming she's faced since taking a GLP-1 to apparently being estranged from one of her former co-stars. Holly Madison has opened up about her relationship with former Girls Next Door co-star Kendra Wilkinson and why the pair haven't spoken in more than a decade.

During a recent appearance on the Hot Goss podcast, Madison reflected on the fallout that ended their friendship, revealing that she believes outside influences and post-show tensions played a significant role in driving them apart.

Holly Madison Says a Producer Contributed to Their Falling Out

According to Madison, the breakdown in her relationship with Wilkinson occurred after The Girls Next Door ended, and both women moved on to separate projects.

"Kendra and I don't speak, but I'm not opposed to speaking," Madison said on the podcast.

While discussing what happened, Madison explained that she believes a producer they both worked with after the show was responsible for the tension between them.

"We had a falling out, but it was after the show," she said. "It was stuff that had to do with our spin-offs and working with the same producer, and I really feel like he tried to pit us against each other and got in our heads. So, that's a shame."

Madison and Wilkinson rose to fame alongside Bridget Marquardt on the hit reality series The Girls Next Door, which chronicled life inside the Playboy Mansion while the women were dating Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.

Although Madison admitted she and Wilkinson were never as close as she was with Marquardt, she said she still considered Wilkinson a friend because of the experiences they shared together.

"We were never as close, obviously, as me and Bridget—we don't have much in common," Madison explained. "But we shared a lot of experiences and had a lot of good times together, so I never thought of her as not a friend."

Madison Says Kendra Wilkinson Became 'Caught Up' in the Spotlight

Madison also suggested that Wilkinson became increasingly influenced by tabloid attention following the show's success.

According to Madison, she was surprised when Wilkinson publicly stated years ago that the two women were never friends.

"I’m sitting here like, 'Wait, I just sent your son a Christmas gift. We're not friends? That's so weird,'" Madison recalled. "So I think she was just really caught up."

The comments appear to reference a public disagreement that dates back more than a decade. In 2015, Wilkinson criticized Madison's memoir Down the Rabbit Hole, while Madison later spoke about feeling hurt by Wilkinson's remarks.

At the time, Wilkinson famously pushed back on the idea that the two shared a close friendship, saying their connection stemmed primarily from their relationship with Hefner.

Despite the years of distance between them, Madison indicated that she has no interest in continuing the feud. Instead, her latest comments suggest she views the situation as an unfortunate consequence of the pressures that followed their reality television success.

While the former co-stars remain estranged today, Madison made it clear that she is not opposed to reconnecting in the future if the opportunity ever arises.

Heading into Season 3, Rhaenyra appears ready to take a more aggressive approach. With new dragonriders on her side and Alicent offering her a path into King's Landing, she may be closer than ever to the throne. However, the war is also growing larger, bloodier and harder to control.

Heading into Season 3, Alicent is politically isolated. Aemond has pushed her aside, Aegon has fled King’s Landing, and her attempt to make peace with Rhaenyra may already be falling apart. Her priority now appears to be protecting Helaena and surviving the consequences of Team Green’s choices.

Heading into Season 3, Aegon is no longer in King’s Landing. Larys helped him escape the capital in the Season 2 finale, warning that his life was in danger whether Team Green won or lost the war. His survival could complicate Alicent’s attempt to hand the city to Rhaenyra.

The 2-Second Spider-Man Shot That Convinced Everyone Sadie Sink Is Jean Grey

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 1:42pm

For months, Marvel has done everything in its power to keep Sadie Sink's identity in Spider-Man: Brand New Day a secret. It hid her face in the first trailer. It buried her in a hood in the second. But with the new footage released June 17, fans found what they needed in a single moment clocking in at under two seconds.

At the 58-second mark of the new trailer, a concussive psychic blast ripples outward across Manhattan. On its own, it reads as a dramatic Marvel moment. But eagle-eyed viewers immediately compared the shot to a specific sequence from the animated series X-Men: Evolution, the exact visual signature of Jean Grey's telepathic power surging out of control. The two clips, side by side, are nearly identical in shape, color, and spread.

That would be compelling enough on its own. But the case goes deeper. Enhanced trailer images published by fans and outlets after the trailer dropped reveal what appears to be Sink's face at the 56-second mark, obscured by shadow, but unmistakably her. The figure is wearing a green and yellow jacket, which matches Jean Grey's classic Marvel Girl colors from the comics almost exactly. Tramell Tillman's character has been confirmed as William Metzger, an anti-mutant activist in the comics, which suggests the film's conflict runs directly through mutant politics, and through whoever Sink is playing.

The trailer also includes a line of dialogue that has become its own puzzle. A voice that sounds like Tillman says, 'You're the only one who's immune to it. You're the only one who can stop it.' The implication is that Peter Parker is not vulnerable to whatever psychic force is gripping New York City, which fans read as either a spider-sense defense or a deeper connection to Jean's power that the film has yet to explain.

Sink herself has been characteristically impossible to pin down. When asked directly about the Jean Grey theory, she called it an 'awesome rumour' without denying it, whihc is the kind of non-answer Marvel's most important secrets tend to get. Insider Daniel Richtman went further on June 17, stating simply: 'I can confirm that Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey, 100%.'

Marvel did the same thing with the No Way Home multiverse cameos. Every rumor was denied. If Brand New Day is setting up the MCU's mutant era the same way, fans already have a very good idea of who will be standing at the center of it when July 31 arrives.

27 Funny Lies Parents Told Their Kids Growing Up

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 1:25pm

Even though we all had very different childhoods, it kind of seems like there were general lies parents told their kids growing up. Almost as if universal, there are a handful of common falsities parents tell their kids—about chewing gum, swimming after eating and the light inside the car, to name a few—and most of us can relate. We most likely all have memories of our folks stretching the truth a bit when we were growing up. Whether it was to get us off their backs, to save their sanity or to be playful with us, they’d pull our little legs without us even realizing.

Now, we’re not talking about anything mean or destructive like gaslighting or passive-aggressive lies. Though, as with anything, people’s folks can take things too far, and that, unfortunately, might have been your experience. But for the most part, many of us can relate to the fact that there are some harmless, funny lies parents tell kids, and we gathered a list of them for you to enjoy and reminisce.

If you have your own children now, you can really empathize with your parents and understand why they needed to say a white lie here and there. But even if you’re not a parent yourself yet, you can still probably get it.

Are any of the tall tales your parents told you on this list? If not: what white lies did your ‘rents tell you?

Related: We Asked 3 Child Psychologists What Compliment Is Best for Kids—They All Said the Same Thing

Why Do Parents Tell These Hilarious Lies?

Kids can ask a lot of questions, and sometimes—either for their sake or yours—parents feel like they need to tell a harmless lie to their child. This could be because the kid really wants something, and it’s a complicated answer to basically tell them “No,” so their folks might decide to cut their losses and tell a lie.

Again, we’re not talking about lies parents might have told to gaslight you, abuse you or be passive-aggressive toward you. We’re not talking about them saying, “I’m fine” while giving you the cold shoulder because you grew up with an eggshell parent, for example.

No, these are fun lies (if you can believe in such a thing). These are things that folks are dishonest about to either make life more whimsical or easier for everyone involved. And, as you’ll see with this list, there are some that nearly all of us were told. Really makes ya think, huh? Like, is there some parenting handbook you all get? Kind of spooky.

35 Funny Lies Parents Tell Kids

CanvaPro/Parade

1. "Buffalo wings came from real buffaloes"

The real reason: This one's just fun. Probably told to you by your father, this was one of those lies that playful and maybe elicited a laugh from you (or a horrified stare—it depends on how you feel about buffalo).

2. "Chocolate milk comes from brown cows"

The real reason: This one is the same; why not play around with your child by making them believe something a wee bit silly? Even if it's just for a little while when they're a child.

3. "I’m a billion years old"

The real reason: To bypass the possibility of your child blurting out your real age to other parents or teachers (if you're sensitive about that kind of thing), this little lie is not only funny, but it also keeps your age a mystery. It's okay, your child doesn't need to know how old you are until they can count that high. And even then...

Food and Eating Lies

4. "If you swallow a watermelon seed, you'll grow one in your stomach"

The real reason: Another falsity that was mostly for fun, but also to make sure kids weren't swallowing choking hazards. This is a pretty universal one that I think everyone's parents told them, or they heard from school, thanks to other folks telling their kids. However, it didn't help that Rugrats had an episode in the '90s that depicted this exact thing. Kids are impressionable, and if you heard this lie from your mom or dad, then saw this episode, it probably solidified this for you as fact. I know it did for me.

5. "Crust will make your hair curly"

The real reason: If your child wanted curly hair, this was a great incentive to get them to eat everything on their plate, including the crust. Was it true? Not at all.

6. "Carrots give you better vision (or night vision)"

The real reason: This was yet another lie that was meant to entice kids to eat something they might normally avoid. And who doesn't want night vision?

7. "If you swallow gum, it will stay in your stomach for seven years"

The real reason: Similar to the dishonesty surrounding the watermelon seed, this lie was meant to stop kids from swallowing something that isn't meant to be eaten. But even though you're not supposed to eat chewing gum, it's not going to set up shop in your stomach for years. But again, it scared some of us silly to the point where if we accidentally downed one, we might have been terrified of what happened next (guilty as charged).

8. "Bread crusts will help you be able to whistle"

The real reason: Now, if your child didn't care for having curly hair (or their hair was already curly), then this was another lie parents told to get kids to eat all of their bread. I know I wanted to whistle like my father so badly as a kid, and this was something he told me. Didn't work, of course, and I still can't whistle. But at least it was the nicest lie he ever told me! You gotta count your wins where you can, right?

9. "Coffee will stop you from growing"

The real reason: Children love to copy their parents or older siblings, and this lie was to get them to stop asking for some coffee "like dad's!" While coffee isn't good for kids, they won't listen to that reason; this lie will scare them into not asking anymore.

10. "Vegetables will make you grow super tall"

The real reason: Yet another falsity that hopefully gets kids to eat everything on their plates (or at least the good stuff). And you know? Veggies do help you grow, so this is only slightly a lie.

‘Because I Said So’ Safety Lies

11. "Turning on the light inside the car is illegal and unsafe"

The real reason: This might be the most well-known white lie parents told kids growing up. And one of the main reasons is to scare your kids into not doing something disruptive. I believed this lie so much that it wasn't until I was an adult that I learned it wasn't real. Keeping the dome light on inside the car isn't illegal; you won't get a ticket, as mom told you. But you know what? She was desperate for the 5-year-old to stop reaching up and blocking her rearview mirror. Plus, the light on would be annoying as a driver. I get it.

12. "Too much TV can make your eyes sore or make you go blind"

The real reason: I know my mom told me to sit back often or not be too close to the TV when watching it, and it's very much a "because I said so" lie, but it is for your own good. While you won't go blind, it doesn't benefit you. And similar to how you shouldn't be too close to your computer or phone screen, it's just not good for you, which this lie aims to enforce with kids without going into boring explanations.

13. "Swimming right after eating can cause cramping"

The real reason: Yet another falsity that I believed for far too long, apparently, you don't have to wait 30 minutes after eating before swimming again. But any type of running around or getting too excited after eating can maybe lead to a stomachache. So just for extra precaution, this lie came to be (most likely).

14. "You have to be 18 to sit in the front seat of a car"

The real reason: This is definitely a lie parents told to stop their kids from begging to sit shotgun all of the time. First off, odds are the kid is still too short to do so safely, so the answer is still no for valid reasons. But, this lie gives a hard cutoff that they can look toward, instead of a height or weight that they have no idea when they'll be. So rather than telling them the truth and still getting a "Can I?" every week, this holds it off for at least a little while.

15. "The car won’t start until everyone is buckled"

The real reason: Similar to the dome light lie, this fib is a way to "train" a behavior in kids so that they stay safe in the car and realize how important it is to buckle up. Again, it's not enough to just say, "because I said so" or "for your safety," sometimes, kids don't care too much about that. But if you tell them that the car just won't go if they don't buckle, or that it'll come to a halt on the freeway if they unbuckle? That might do the trick.

Parenting Lies To Save Money

16. "The ice cream truck plays music when it’s out of ice cream, actually"

The real reason: I hadn't heard this one until seeing it on the internet, and it's kind of funny because it feels counterintuitive. However, kids don't know that. They hear the authority figure in their life say this, and they take it as the truth (which is why white lies are so useful with kids). Now, if your parents ever wanted to buy you an ice cream, they'd have to be careful not to let you hear it beforehand.

17. "The toy store is closed for cleaning today"

The real reason: Kids should be able to take "no" for an answer, and shouldn't be so spoiled that they'll throw a tantrum because they aren't getting a toy that day. However, this harmless lie is for those days when you just don't have it in you, don't want a conversation or argument about it, and just want to give a definitive, "Not today."

18. "I don’t have any money"

The real reason: This wasn't always a lie for parents, but when it was it was for a similar reason: it didn't allow for any leeway or pushback from children about wanting to buy something. Shut it down.

White Lies To Save Their Sanity

19. "Cracking your knuckles will give you arthritis"

The real reason: Yet another lie to scare kids from doing something their parents didn't want them to. As someone who found knuckle cracking as a pre-teen (or slightly younger), I heard this a lot. Did I listen? Nope, but it did worry me a lot. Sure, this habit most likely doesn't benefit you; it doesn't lead to arthritis as the 'rents said it did.

20. "Your face will freeze like that"

The real reason: For a similar reason, parents told kids this to stop them from being a nuisance with a new silly face. And for some reason, it feels like grandparents really loved this one, too.

21. "That ride is broken, and that’s why we can’t go on it"

The real reason: I've heard this happen with kids who really were dying to go on a ride at Disney or Six Flags, and they were too short. And while telling a child that might make them start to cry (because of rejection, sadness or whatever), this lie puts the blame on the park, not the child. Not that they can help how tall they are, it just makes a clean break for you all to move on to the next ride.

22. "My food is spicy, you won’t like it"

The real reason: If you ever just wanted your child to get off your back—and your plate—this fib is intended to make your food unappetizing to them. But just wait for those super stubborn or adventurous kids, then you're in for a doozy.

23. "Santa Claus has a special key to come in through the front door since we don’t have a chimney"

The real reason: I grew up in an apartment, and while I think The Santa Clause movie had an explanation I was satisfied with (magic shrunk Scott Calvin enough to fit in whatever piping an apartment does have), other kids needed more. So this lie is a sort of sweet one that aims to keep Santa Claus and Christmas magic alive and allows kids in any living situation to believe. Some stores even sell decorative signs or keys that go on the front door so kids are truly convinced St. Nick can get in.

24. "A baby comes along because a wife and husband love each other very much"

The real reason: While this is a pretty blatant lie, it might be good enough for the time being with your kid. Sometimes parents just don't want to think up a G-rated version of where babies come from, and this is an easy lie to explain it away to a young child. Yeah, it's a super heteronormative fib, but it is an easy way to help kids sort of understand something they're asking about.

25. "Peeing in a pool will change the color of the water"

The real reason: I mean, thanks to Grown Ups, this "lie" has some weight to it now. I'm not sure if urine-activated color-changing chemicals exist for real public pools, but regardless, this lie is good enough to stop kids from doing it (most of the time). As for why, parents might not want their kids to get into the habit of peeing in a pool for potty training reasons, hygiene reasons and more.

Parent Lies To Encourage Good Behavior

26. "Moms have eyes in the back of their heads"

The real reason: Still not sure this one is a lie with the way my mom was, but this is a funny lie that really whipped kids into shape. If there was even a possibility that your mom could catch you doing something, would you do it? Yeah, probably for a lot of kids, but it was enough for me.

27. "I have a direct line to Santa Claus if you’re naughty"

The real reason: Similarly, this falsity was meant to keep kids in check. Because you might not have a principal at home, but what's worse? The Big Guy finding out you're misbehaving. No thanks!

The 'Healthy' Food That Could Be Damaging Your Kidneys Over 60, According to Nephrologists

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 1:25pm

There are areas of our bodies that we become particularly mindful of as we age—our hearts and bones, for example—but what about our kidneys? How are these organs impacted as the years progress?

According to Dr. Uday Nori, MBBS, Transplant Nephrologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, kidney function begins naturally declining by about 1% after the age of 40, but it’s faster with systemic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes

That’s why it makes sense that those who are 60 years old or older are even more predisposed to declining kidney function.

“Adults over 60 are particularly vulnerable due to natural kidney aging,” says nephrologist Dr. Stefanie Diaz, MD. “The kidneys have less reserve capacity in handling dietary stress.”

As it turns out, some of that dietary stress is caused by seemingly healthy foods that all of us are encouraged to eat regularly. But it can surprisingly bring on kidney disease, which Dr. Nori calls “highly prevalent.”

“It is estimated that about 30 million Americans have kidney disease today and only one out of nine people even know about it,” he further says.

Why Is Food Damaging to Kidneys?

Since the kidneys act as the body’s filtration system, a number of foods can damage the kidneys.

For instance, Dr. Tim Pflederer, MD FASN FASDIN, Chief Medical Director of Evergreen Nephrology, says that a diet high in red meats increases the work of filtration of the kidneys, leading to scarring within the filters and chronic kidney damage (CKD).

Dr. Pflederer adds that ultra-processed foods, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, fast foods, frozen meals, chips, candy and pastries, are high in salt, sugar and fat, which promote inflammation and may contribute to worsening CKD.

“Alternatively, a predominantly plant-based protein diet can reduce the risk or delay worsening of CKD,” Dr. Pflederer says. “Processed meats also carry high sodium and phosphorus additive loads that contribute to hypertension and CKD-related bone disease.”

But even certain foods that are core to a plant-based diet could eventually bring about kidney damage.

Spinach is high in oxalate, so for people who are predisposed to kidney stones, it can cause calcium oxalate kidney stones,” Dr. Pflederer cautions. “If kidney stones block the ureter draining tubes, they not only cause pain but can cause damage to the kidneys.”

He also says that there is some evidence that a very high oxalate diet (high in spinach content) can cause chronic kidney damage due to oxalate passing through the filters and causing inflammation in the kidneys.

“This is especially true for people over 60 because the aging kidney is more susceptible to damage from any cause,” he says.

Dr. Diaz explains that spinach is “the most important dietary source of oxalate.” “A metabolic study demonstrated that spinach was the only food tested that was capable of leading to high oxalate levels in the urine in normal subjects,” she says.

Dr. Diaz says that oxalate is a naturally occurring compound in many plant foods. Dr. Nori also lists star fruit, rhubarb and chard as plant-based foods that can cause kidney damage if consumed in large quantities.

You don’t necessarily need to swear off the green stuff, but you should be mindful of your spinach consumption if you have certain kidney-related health conditions

“The risk depends on total oxalate intake, frequency and individual susceptibility,” says Dr. Pflederer, referring to having a history of prior kidney stones.

Dr. Pflederer says that potentially harmful intake patterns of spinach include:

  • Large, concentrated consumption (i.e. smoothies or juicing): less than two cups daily in liquid form can exceed 1,200 mg oxalate/day, “which may overwhelm renal excretion.”
  • Frequent high intake: eating spinach ≥8 times/month has been associated with increased kidney stone risk in some populations.

But the great nutritional benefits of spinach are to be considered as well.

“For most people, typical dietary intake does not cause kidney damage and indeed the health benefits outweigh the risks except for those with a tendency to kidney stones,” Dr. Pflederer notes.

Symptoms of Kidney Damage

Dr. Pflederer says that chronic kidney damage affects 37 million people in the United States, with about 9 in 10 unaware they have it “because the disease typically has no symptoms in its early stages.”

Dr. Diaz says that people don’t have symptoms until the later stages of chronic kidney disease, “and they tend to be nonspecific.”

She lists these symptoms as fatigue, mild itching, and decreased appetite. “As kidney function gets worse, symptoms are more pronounced and can include foamy urine, swelling, nausea, weight loss, urine frequency and difficulty concentrating on tasks,” Dr. Diaz says.

Tom Hanks Stuns Reporter With Savage Dig During Live Interview and Fans Have Thoughts

Sat, 06/20/2026 - 1:20pm

A live interview withTom Hanks got off to an unexpected start on Thursday.

The Oscar-winning actor was among the high-profile guests at the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on June 18, when he stopped for a live interview with MS NOW correspondent Jacob Soboroff.

Before the conversation could even get underway, Hanks couldn't resist taking a playful shot at the network's audience size. "What can I do for the 800 people watching MS NOW?" the 69-year-old jabbed.

When Soboroff informed him they were broadcasting live, the Cast Away star doubled down. "Alright, add a zero to it if you need to," he quipped. Soboroff laughed off the remark, replying, "I would say millions now that you're on our air."

The moment is now going viral on social media and fans have a lot of thoughts.

"Tom, isn’t it below you to mock to mock an 'MS' employee this way? The poor guy is probably trying to do his job," one X user wrote.

"Kind of tacky comment," another claimed.

A third said, "Pretty arrogant, Tom. Not a great look."

Others were here for the subtle dig. "Not even mad that was a sick burn," one noted.

"Do the people in the comments not understand comedy?" another asked.

For those unaware, MS NOW officially launched on November 15, 2025, after MSNBC rebranded following Comcast’s decision to spin off several cable assets, including CNBC and USA Network, into a new public company called Versant.

As for the event, Hanks wasn’t the only high-profile celeb in attendance. The event had an impressive guest list that included former Presidents Joe Biden, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, along with former First Ladies Jill Biden, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton. Musical performances throughout the evening came from artists like Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, and John Legend.

The pair eventually turned their attention to the Obama Presidential Center itself, but Soboroff couldn't resist referencing the joke one final time before wrapping up the interview. "Thank you for adding the zero to our ratings today," he told Hanks.
