‘I’m a Cardiologist—This Is the First Thing I Always Look at in a Patient’s Lab Results'

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 1:25pm

It seems like there's scary news about heart health everywhere. On highway billboards, in news alerts about celebrities and politicians and in warnings from your doctor. You may have another underlying condition that puts you at a higher risk of heart disease, or have a family member or friend who is recovering from a heart attack or stroke. Plus, each year, the American Heart Association puts out statistics showing that, once again, cardiovascular disease is the top killer of adults in the United States.

When it comes to preventing cardiovascular disease—or at least lowering your risk — it's crucial to focus on numbers. Some are lifestyle-related, like tracking how many grams of saturated fat you consume and increasing your weekly exercise to 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity or 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity.

Others require a trip to the doctor or lab for bloodwork, both of which may make you nervous (and queasy). Still, one cardiologist emphasizes how important they are.

"Regular bloodwork is important if you have a known cardiovascular problem or if you are taking cholesterol medication," states Dr. Bradley Serwer, MD, an interventional cardiologist and chief medical officer at VitalSolution, an Ingenovis Health company. "It’s important to know about your risk or to determine if the medications are effective."

It can also help you make lifestyle tweaks to support your heart health. When looking at a patient's bloodwork, Dr. Serwer checks one (OK, two) numbers first. Below, he gives us the what, the why and how to improve your numbers (and heart health).

‘I’m a Cardiologist—This Is the First Thing I Look at in a Patient’s Lab Results'

When Dr. Serwer scans his patients' bloodwork, he first focuses on LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. It helps him inform and empower his clients to take steps toward better heart health.

"Cholesterol is a significant modifiable risk factor for the development of coronary artery disease," he says. "Understanding your cholesterol levels enables you to assess your individual risk and facilitates early intervention, potentially preventing or mitigating future complications."

Coronary artery disease (CAD) develops when there's plaque buildup in the coronary arteries that supply blood to your heart. This plaque can narrow or block the arteries, obstructing this vital blood flow.

It sounds scary, but you won't know your risk until you roll up your sleeves, get lab work done and speak with your doctor about your LDL and triglyceride numbers.

"The best way to lower your cholesterol is first to know your level and your goal," Dr. Serwer says. "This is determined by seeing your primary care providers and discussing your individual risks."

From there, you can discuss how often to get blood drawn to check your LDL and triglyceride levels.

"The timing and frequency for testing your cholesterol levels depend on your risk of having complications," Dr. Serwer explains. "If you have diabetes, known coronary artery disease or if you have family members with severely elevated levels, knowing your levels is imperative to avoid downstream complications."

What To Know About LDL Cholesterol: Definition, Risks & Targets

LDL cholesterol gets thrown around a lot when discussing heart health, but what does it even mean? "LDL or low-density lipoprotein is commonly referred to as bad cholesterol," Dr. Serwer explains.

He adds that LDL cholesterol can be deposited in the inner lining of your arteries. "Over time, these cholesterol deposits thicken and are walled off with calcium," he notes. "This process is called atherosclerosis. If this occurs in your coronary arteries, it can lead to chest pain or increase the risk of a heart attack."

He explains that this buildup can also occur in your neck or brain, putting you at a high risk of a stroke—and, unfortunately, the risks of elevated LDL cholesterol don't stop there.

"Sometimes, these pockets of cholesterol can rupture within the arterial wall," he says. "The body immediately attacks this rupture by forming a blood clot. This blood clot can very rapidly stop blood flow and thus cause a heart attack or stroke."

Your target number is going to depend on your risk for heart issues, including coronary artery disease. Dr. Serwer looks for an LDL of below:

  • 130 mg/dl for the general, low-risk population
  • 100 mg/dl for intermediate-risk patients
  • 70mg/dl for high-risk patients
  • 55mg/dl for very high-risk patients

"Very high risk is defined by having known coronary artery disease and diabetes, kidney disease or active smoking history," Dr. Serwer shares, adding that you'll want to speak with your doctor about your personal risk level.

What To Know About Triglycerides: Definition, Risks & Targets

"Triglycerides are fats in your blood that tell us more about your diet within the past 24 hours," Dr. Serwer says.

He explains that triglycerides are variable and will shift rapidly based on what you've eaten.

"Some people have very high levels if they are unable to clear them effectively," he reports. "High triglyceride levels can lead to acute issues such as pancreatitis." So, you'll ideally want to keep your triglyceride levels below 150mg/dL, according to Dr. Serwer and the American Heart Association.

How To Manage Your Cholesterol

First things first, you'll need to know your cholesterol numbers to manage them. Besides understanding your LDL and triglyceride numbers, Dr. Serwer urges people to know their HDL ("good cholesterol") levels.

"HDL levels for men are greater than 40mg/dl, and for women are greater than 50mg/dl," he states. "Any level above 60mg/dl is considered protective and helps lower your risk for coronary arterial disease."

With your numbers in hand, you can start taking steps toward managing your cholesterol—and lowering your LDL and triglyceride numbers if needed. Below, Dr. Serwer shares some of the tips he gives patients after seeing that their LDL and triglyceride numbers are too high.

  • Prioritize physical activity. Your exercise minutes aren't the only number to focus on for your heart health, but it's still important to keep an eye on them. "Exercise is a great way to raise your HDL and thus lower your LDL," he explains. "When weight loss is achieved by 5-10% of your body weight, we can see a significant drop in LDL."
  • Limit saturated fats. Dr. Serwer says diet is another important piece to managing cholesterol, especially if you're consuming a lot of saturated fats (found in foods like some baked goods and red and processed meats). The American Heart Association recommends limiting saturated fat intake to no more than 13 grams daily if you're following a 2,000-calorie diet.
  • Boost fiber intake. Only about 5% of Americans get enough fiber. But getting enough fiber in your diet can help keep your cholesterol numbers in check. "Increasing daily fiber has shown a significant benefit," he reports. "This can be obtained from soluble fiber sources such as oats, barley and beans."
  • Consider medication. Sometimes, diet and exercise aren't enough. In these cases, Dr. Serwer says it may be best to start a medication, such as a statin, ezetimibe or a PCSK9 inhibitor, to lower your cholesterol.

Your doctor is your best resource for determining which cholesterol-lowering strategies can help you.

Padma Lakshmi Reveals The Most Surprising 'America's Culinary Cup' Elimination (Exclusive)

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 1:18pm

Padma Lakshmi has spent nearly two decades shaping how America watches cooking competitions. But even she'll admit: this season, the show she built surprised her.

Ahead of her exclusive Parade cover story and the America's Culinary Cup season finale—both out May 6—the creator and host of the CBS hit reveals which Season 1 eliminations genuinely caught her off guard. "There are so many twists and turns as you go through the season that even though I was there tasting the food and part of the judging process, I certainly didn't know how my two co-judges would score," Lakshmi tells Parade in our cover story coming May 6.

In the upcoming season finale, one chef will walk away with a lot of dough. The grand prize is $1 million, the largest amount ever for a culinary competition show. Read on to discover more exclusive details from America's Culinary Cup.

The biggest twist of the season came at the show's halfway point, when the eight remaining chefs were asked to vote on which of their fellow competitors was most likely to win the competition—and who was least likely. The results made for genuinely emotional television as Beverly Kim broke down in tears after being named most likely to win, while Chris Morgan was left visibly stunned by his "least likely" vote.

Both votes left Lakshmi stunned, too. "I had tasted Chris Morgan's food, and I was surprised that he was voted the least likely to win by his fellow competitors," she tells Parade.

But the bigger shock came just one episode later, when Kim—the chef who had just been crowned by her peers as the most likely to take home the $1 million grand prize—was eliminated during the Culinary Science and Technology challenge.

"I was also very surprised that Beverly Kim went home when she did because she had been such a strong competitor and was so compelling the whole way through," Lakshmi adds.

A James Beard Award winner and former Top ChefSeason 9 contestant, Kim had dominated earlier rounds—including winning the Sustainability commandment in Week 3. But the molecular gastronomy challenge—a category leaning into co-judge Wylie Dufresne's expertise—proved to be her undoing. Meanwhile, Morgan has made it to the final four.

Part of what makes the show's eliminations feel so unpredictable is the format itself, which Lakshmi—who baked up America's Culinary Cup from scratch after 17 years onTop Chef—designed intentionally to focus purely on technique. "Each episode is different and structured, designed around one culinary commandment or principle of fine cooking," she tells Parade. "I think the biggest difference between our show and other competition shows is that we don't throw in obstacles. We give them all the weapons they need to succeed, provide them with an unparalleled kitchen with as many beautiful ingredients as they could want, and enough equipment to go around."

That format has made every elimination feel earned—but also, occasionally, genuinely shocking. With the Season 1 finale set for May 13, viewers will soon find out whether Lakshmi has any final surprises in store.

America's Culinary Cup airs Wednesday nights at 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS and streams the next day on Paramount+. The Season 1 finale airs May 13. This interview was conducted by Paulette Cohn, whose Parade exclusive cover story with Lakshmi will be released on the same day.

David Letterman, 79, Lashes Out at His Former Network, CBS, Calling Them ‘Lying Weasels'

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 1:13pm

David Letterman isn't afraid to share his thoughts about his former network, CBS, in the wake of the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's The Late Show.

The iconic comedian, 79, who is known for his beloved shows Late Night with David Letterman and TheLate Show with David Letterman, currently hosts Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. But in a new interview with the New York Times, Letterman was asked if he believes The Late Show was canceled because of a financial decision.

Letterman responded by saying, "They don’t share the books with me. All of television seems to have been nicked by digital communication and streaming platforms and on and on. TV may be not the money machine it once was. On the other hand, what about the humanity for Stephen and the humanity of people who love him and the humanity for people who still enjoyed that 11:30 respite?"

The late-night legend continued, providing another reason why he thinks Colbert was fired.

"He was dumped because the people selling the network to Skydance said, 'Oh no, there’s not going to be any trouble with that guy. We’re going to take care of the show. We’re just going to throw that into the deal. When will the ink on the check dry?' I’m just going to go on record as saying: They’re lying. Let me just add one other thing, Jason. They’re lying weasels."

When asked about the staying power of late night, Letterman said, "We still have Jimmy (Kimmel). We still have Seth [Meyers]. It’s not completely dead on arrival, but I would be surprised if it lasts more than a year or so. But it’s such an easy soothing format that it’s got to stay on," he said, later specifying, "Well, maybe specific shows. I don’t think it’ll ever go away because it’s just the best. It’s humans talking to humans."

Letterman Called CBS News a “Wreck”

This recent interview wasn't the first time Letterman has gone off on his former network. Back in January, Letterman introduced the world to his new dog, but proceeded to speak out about CBS.

“By the way, what about those idiots at CBS?” Letterman said. “CBS News is a wreck – it’s just gone. CBS News, for decades, going back to [the second world war], before [it], Ed Murrow would be broadcasting the blitz of London from the rooftop of buildings in London for CBS Radio, and it was that mentality that drove the integrity of CBS News, that has been trampled on, pissed on, and eviscerated by these idiots that have taken it over.”

Bari Weiss was named the new editor-in-chief of CBS News in October.

The Legacy Continues

The Crosby, Stills & Nash artist recently opened up about the tour, explaining that he plans to keep the band's legacy alive. "You know, Neil [Young] is never going to do CSN songs. Stephen [Stills] is never going on the road again and David [Crosby], unfortunately, has passed away," he told Ultimate Classic Rock last month.

Still, he has a plan for honoring the music regardless. "If anybody wants to hear any of those songs, they should come and see me, because I really loved the music that we made," Nash continued. "Now that I have Adam Minkoff, who plays drums and bass at the same time, by the way, on a couple of songs, and electric guitar and acoustic guitar. [We also have] Zach Djanikian on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, bass, mandolin and tenor sax. I can do all that [material justice as a result]."

This Dr Pepper Dessert Is Returning Just in Time for Summer

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 1:04pm

The perfect summer treat has been brought back to a fan-favorite restaurant for a limited time. Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is offering the Dr Pepper Frost at participating locations.

The treat returns from May 6 to July 7 at participating locations.

PR Newswire revealed the news of the Dr Pepper Frost return on April 29. The frozen treat will be available in restaurants, via the drive-thru, and in the mobile app for pickup or delivery orders.

The Freddy's Dr. Pepper Frost combines the restaurant's trademark vanilla frozen custard with Dr Pepper and tops it with whipped cream.

Freddy's Senior Director of Menu Strategy & Innovation, Rick Petralia, noted, "We first offered the Dr Pepper Frost last summer and it became an instant hit."

In addition to bringing the Dr Pepper Frost back until early July, Freddy's will keep the Steakburger Taco on the menu for a bit longer, as well.

The Steakburger Taco was introduced by Freddy's in January, and fans have begged for it to be available longer.

In a Snackwire Instagram post highlighting new fast food items, several followers gushed over the Freddy's news in the comment section.

"Oh yum the Freddy's Dr Pepper Frost and the Steakburger Taco look amazing," one follower wrote.

Another Instagram user declared, "I'm so happy Freddy's brought back the Dr Pepper frost."

In 2025, the Freddy's Dr Pepper Frost was available from July 9 to August 26.

During the initial run of the Freddy's Dr Pepper Frost, one fan on X, formerly Twitter, raved over it. "Freddy's now has a Dr Pepper frost and it's so good I hope they never get rid of it," they tweeted.

The return of the Freddy's Float is just the latest in a string of popular Dr Pepper releases.

Dr Pepper recently announced that it has developed merchandise to go with its Creamy Coconut and Summer Americana flavors. In addition, over the past few months, the brand has also released collaborations with Blue Bell and Dippin' Dots, as well as new Freeze Pops.

Over 100 Ancient Shipwrecks Discovered in Stunning Underwater ‘Museum’ Spanning 2,400 Years

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 1:02pm

History has a way of hiding in the most unexpected places—sometimes right beneath the hull of a modern cargo ship. In a stunning discovery that feels like something out of an adventure novel, Spanish archaeologists have identified a massive collection of ancient shipwrecks in the Bay of Gibraltar. While we often think of shipwrecks as lonely relics in the middle of nowhere, this "underwater museum" was found sitting directly under one of the planet’s most crowded maritime corridors.

A Deep Sea Time Capsule

The discovery, led by researchers at the University of Cádiz working on Project Herkales, includes at least 134 shipwrecks, some dating back as far as the fifth century BCE. These aren't just empty boats—they’re incredible time capsules that tell the story of thousands of years of trade, travel, and tragedy. Because the Bay of Gibraltar has been a strategic bottleneck for millennia, the sea floor is littered with everything from Phoenician and Roman vessels to ships from the Napoleonic era.

View this post on Instagram

The conditions in the bay have surprisingly well preserved these fragile sites. Researchers used high-tech sonar and underwater drones to map the area, finding piles of ancient ceramic containers called amphorae, which were once used to transport olive oil, wine, and fish sauce across the Roman Empire.

One of the standout finds so far is the wreck of the Puente Mayorga IV—a small 18th-century gunboat designed for quick strikes on British ships near Gibraltar that, until now, experts have had little chance to study.

Related: Archaeologists Uncover Mystery Object Hidden in 2,000-Year-Old  Egyptian Child Mummy's Chest

Protecting a Fragile Underwater Legacy

Finding these ships is only the first step; now, the challenge is keeping them safe. Because these sites are located in such a busy area, they are constantly threatened by modern anchors, dredging, native invasive species, and even treasure hunters. Spanish officials are currently working on ways to protect this "fragile museum" without disrupting the vital shipping traffic that passes through the strait every day.

Miquel Mir, the Spanish Minister of the Environment, Territory and Housing, noted that the discovery highlights the importance of protecting maritime heritage as a collective responsibility for future generations. By documenting these sites now, historians can piece together the daily lives of ancient sailors and the vast economic networks that connected the Mediterranean to the rest of the world.

Related: Growingly Popular Blue-Water European Destination Put Under Security Alert

For those of us who love a good mystery, this find is a reminder that the world still has plenty of secrets waiting to be uncovered—even in the places we travel through every day. Whether it’s an ancient Roman galley or a 19th-century merchant vessel, these ships offer a rare, silent look at our shared human history.

“It tells us a story that we sometimes forget, which is that maritime societies, or peoples who have lived in coastal areas, have had a very intense relationship with the sea and have lived on the sea,” Felipe Cerezo Andreo, an archaeology professor at the University of Cádiz who led the research, told The Guardian.

“And being able to study these kinds of archaeological remains —to document them, to learn about them in situ and not just through the objects that sometimes end up in a museum, but to understand them in their context—allows us to carry out that process of reconstruction and to tell the story of these people.”

The research team plans to share their discoveries through virtual models and site videos in a public digital archive.

‘The Bear’ Just Dropped a Surprise Episode — Here’s How to Watch It

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 12:58pm

Death, taxes, and The Bear airing in June. Those have been the constants in life since 2022, when the hit Hulu dramedy first hit the scene. And fans are eagerly awaiting the Emmy-winning series to return, given the speculation that it may be one last go-around for Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and crew. But Hulu was able to provide a surprise appetizer to the main course on May 5, dropping a special episode, "Gary," starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal (both of whom also wrote the episode).

Here's what to know about the surprise episode of The Bear, including how to watch.

What is The Bear's surprise episode?

FX and Hulu dropped a previously unannounced episode of The Bear on Wednesday, May 5. While FX credits the episode as part of the series, notably, Hulu has it under its own title when searching: Gary.

When did The Bear's surprise episode come out?

The Bear's surprise episode arrived on Wednesday, May 5. This is assumingly at least a month before any new episodes of the show were expected, given its usual timeline.

What is The Bear surprise episode about?

"Gary" is set entirely in the past, prior to the events of The Bear. It's only logical, given that one of the main characters is Mikey (Bernthal), who is dead by the time the season starts. The episode focuses on him and Richie (Moss-Bachrach) on a work trip to Gary, Indiana. Per the official description of the episode, it depicts "the two friends’ complicated relationship, uncovering new layers of Mikey’s mental state while offering crucial insight into the man Richie is when audiences first meet him in Season 1 — adding emotional context that reframes their story from the very beginning."

How to watch The Bear's surprise episode

It's simple enough to watch "Gary" on broadcast TV, as you can just go to FX under your cable provider. Finding it on Hulu, however, is a different story. As Moss-Bachrach said in his announcement of the special on his Instagram, this episode isn't under The Bear on the streamer. Instead, you'll need to search "Gary" specifically to find it. A bit of a roundabout way to discover this surprise gem, but we're happy it exists, no matter what the name!

View this post on Instagram When does The Bear Season 5 premiere?

The premiere date for The Bear Season 5 has yet to be announced. However, the series has always dropped around the same time in late June. While this episode is certianly bringing the show into our lives a lot earlier this year, it would be shocking if Season 5 proper didn't air at the usual time.

It takes its toll, to a point where the general public can often forget that they can have fun sometimes.

Out of any former President, I feel that Barack Obama's personal taste in the arts has shown through the most. Since his time in office, Obama has published a yearly, curated list of his favorite books, songs, and films of the respective year. Honestly speaking, he's got some good picks.

He's got a lot of books and songs down there, but I want to specifically highlight his film taste, which included a lot of 2025's best films.

Image above via Barack Obama/Medium

The former president has a good sampling of both American as well as foreign films. Jafar Panahi's It Was Just An Accident, Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, and my personal favorite of 2025, Kleber Mendonça Filho's The Secret Agent. How's that for the spirit of international cooperation?

Other standouts include the instantly iconic Sinners, and the best picture winning One Battle After Another. It's a really good list that includes some of the best films of the year, popular or otherwise. Obama clearly knows his stuff, which is why it was a delight to see him talk about a very important theater experience to him: seeing the opening of Star Wars.

Barack Obama's Fandom of 'Star Wars'

In celebration of May the 4th, (Star Wars day for all the uninitiated living under a rock) Former President Obama met up with Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill to wish the world a happy 'Star Wars' day.

@obamafoundation

Where were you when you first saw Star Wars?

♬ original sound - The Obama Foundation

In the video, Obama speaks with Hamill about seeing the film opening week in 1977. Like everyone who sees the film at a young age, he was deeply impacted. I think it's one of the most universal film experiences out there, even if it doesn't persist into adulthood. The Obama Foundation account issued a question to all the commenters: where were you when 'Star Wars' came out?

"I saw it at 4 years old at a drive in, when Vader walked in I was TERRIFIED!" one commenter writes.

"❤️ I was 17. saw it 7 times that summer," another commenter remembers.

And of course, Mark Hamill had his own response: "On set. what about YOU?"

The May 4th announcement coincides with the upcoming launch of the Obama Presidential Center, which will be opening on June 19th. Tickets will be available starting tomorrow.

Justin Bieber Breaks a New Record Weeks After Coachella Performance

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 12:57pm

Justin Bieber is riding a major music wave—and the numbers are proving it.

Just weeks after his highly anticipated Coachella performance, the pop star has officially has the most monthly listeners on Spotify globally, reaching a new career high. According to recent data which was shared with Rolling Stone on Tuesday, May 5, Bieber surpassed 140 million monthly listeners on May 3, marking a massive jump from just under 100 million in early April.

Notably, in the days leading up to Coachella, the 32-year-old’s streaming numbers steadily climbed, with each festival weekend pushing him up even further. By April 20, shortly after his set, he recorded his biggest single streaming day ever on the platform, pulling in more than 105 million streams.

Interestingly, it wasn’t just his newer music driving the surge. The outlet notes that older hits saw a major revival, including his 2012 collaboration “Beauty and a Beat” with Nicki Minaj, which racked up more than 75 million streams during the Coachella window alone.

Still, while the streaming success tells one story, the reaction to his Coachella set has been more mixed. Bieber headlined the April 11 show, leaning heavily into songs from his recent albums SWAG and SWAG II, with a stripped-down setup that featured little more than a laptop on stage.

For some fans expecting a high-production spectacle, the performance fell short. Others, however, appreciated the more intimate approach, with many viewers calling it genius.

There was also speculation that Bieber’s 2022 decision to sell his music catalog may have limited what he could perform, but industry insiders quickly shut that down, with one noting to Billboard Canada that there are “no restrictions on what he can or can’t do in live performance.”

‘Family Ties’ Star Tina Yothers Turns 53, and She’s Still Friends With Michael J. Fox

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 12:42pm

Tina Yothers rose to stardom as a child star on Family Ties, but she's all grown up and turning 53 on Tuesday.

The former child actress played Jennifer Keaton on the hit NBCsitcom, which followed two former hippies, Steven and Elyse Keaton, played by Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross, as they raised their family during the Reagan era. Of course, that included their aspiring capitalist son, Alex, played by Michael J. Fox in his breakthrough role, and their superficial daughter, Mallory, played by Justine Bateman. The series became a favorite throughout the ’80s, and showed the sharp contrast between the ideals of the baby boomer generation and their children.

Back in 2023, Yothers reunited with her onscreen older brother, Fox, to attend the 2023 A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson's event at Casa Cipriani in New York City. 24 years after the show ended, the duo still keeps in touch!

Reality TV Show Stardom

In her post-Family Ties life, Yothers appeared on a variety of reality shows, including Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp, Celebrity Wife Swap, and What Not to Wear. Check out her 2013 appearance on Celebrity Wife Swap below, where she switches places with Niecy Nash. While Yothers sported jet black hair for a few years back then, it looks like she's back to being a blonde these days.

Primarily living life outside of the spotlight these days, Yothers is a busy mom. She did step into the limelight for a bit back in 2016, when she helped advocate to keep a charter school, Oxford Prep Academy, open in a Chino neighborhood, CBS News reported.

Jennifer's Greatest TV Moments

Jennifer added a sweet innocence to the Keaton family, serving as the youngest child on show until the latter seasons, when they introduced baby Andy. Check out a hilarious scene below, when Jennifer goes missing and finds her way home thanks to a kind city bus driver.

Nicole Kidman's Met Gala Hairstylist Reveals the 4-Step Technique To Get Her Stunning Look

Nicole Kidman always stuns at the Met Gala, but this year as a co-chair with Beyoncé, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour, her look was jaw-dropping.

You don't normally see a woman over 50 with hair past her waist, but Kidman, 58, showed us that age doesn't require any outdated beauty rules. And she wasn't the only star at the gala celebrating mature beauty—Naomi Watts, 57, wore bright pink lipstick and large colorful flowers in her hair. In a fun reversal, Cher, 79, went platinum blonde while Madonna, 67, went inky black.

Julianne Moore, 65, Kris Jenner, 70, and Angela Bassett, 67, all showed off especially glowing skin, with Bassett experimenting with an edgy makeup look.

Of course, all of these women have access to the best in beauty, including products, experts and treatments. But they inspire us to think outside of our self-limiting beliefs about how women "over a certain age" are supposed to look. And just in case Kidman's long tresses inspire you to try the look yourself, we tapped her hairstylist, Adir Abergel, for all of the details.

To create an unforgettable look, Abergel wanted to play off of the shine of Nicole’s custom sequined Chanel dress, crafting a hairstyle that also played with light and movement, he says.

To create the style, he brushed out Kidman's towel-dried, freshly-washed hair and followed these four steps:

Kidman didn't walk the Met Gala carpet alone. Her daughter Sunday Rose Kidman Urban went with her, and she also wore gorgeous, impossibly long hair styled by Abergel.

“For Nicole and Sunday’s first Met Gala together, I wanted to create a meaningful connection for this special moment," he shares. "Hair became a subtle yet beautiful unifying thread, tying their looks together through a shared expression of modern elegance."

Abergel followed the same steps for Urban, but used the 60 cm extensions from BHBD in shades 5NG/6NG, "for the perfect match and to achieve the desired length."

These extensions are made from "Remy hair," or 100% human hair that keeps the cuticles intact and are aligned from root to tip. Abergel likes them because they are less likely to get tangled and the extensions blend seamlessly and last longer than synthetic hair.

BHBD tape-in hair extensions can have two types of attachments: standard and invisible. "Standard attachments are used in most applications and provide stability, durability and an even result. Invisible attachments are primarily placed in the top rows or in areas where the hair is finer, creating a completely seamless blend," the company says.

It's best to combine both, so the application can be customized so the extensions remain invisible, even when the hair is styled up. If you try Remy hair extensions, it's best to wash hair using a special shampoo and conditioner made for extensions.

Police Respond to Home of Frankie Valli, Iconic Singer and 'The Sopranos' Star

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 12:26pm

The iconic singer and Sopranos star,Frankie Valli, had a run-in with authorities when police were called to his Los Angeles home. Reports claim the incident occurred over a violation of a restraining order pertaining to a domestic dispute.

According to TMZ, police arrived knocking on the singer's door on Sunday, May 3rd at 5 p.m. Details in the report state that the call that was made was in relation to a 38-year-old male, later identified as Valli's son, Francesco. By the time police arrived at the residence, Francesco had already left, and his rep details that what occurred was a "private family matter." No arrests were made at the time.

News of the incident comes after Valli's other son, Emilio, 31, was granted a temporary restraining order in 2024. The order was given after Emilion allegedly said that his older brother tried to break into their father's home and made threats against him and the singer. As a result, the restraining order orders Francesco to stay away from his father.

According to reports, the need for a restraining order came months after brewing tension within the family. Emilio accused his older brother of opioid addiction, erratic behavior, and pawning his father's items to support his addiction. People reported that Francesco had also "repeatedly physically threatened to harm or kill" Emilio and their father. Tensions only escalated when Valli had cut off Francesco financially. The "Sherry" and "Big Girls Don’t Cry" singer has previously commented that he is "saddened" by what has occurred.

Following the end of the initial temporary restraining order, a new one was issued to span three years and expire on April 29, 2027.

Emilion and Francesco are two of the six children Valli has fathered. His first marriage was in his early 20s with a woman named Mary, who already had a daughter, and the two had two more daughters before divorcing in 1971. Valli's stepdaughter and his youngest, Celia and Francine, died in 1980. His third marriage was to Randy Clohessy in 1984, and he had three sons, Francesco, Emilio, and Brando.

Besides being a legendary singer, Valli is also known for his acting credits. He appeared in Miami Vice as a mob boss, Full House, the TV movie Witness to the Mob, and the film And So It Goes. He largely became known for his recurring role as mobster Rusty Million in The Sopranos.

'90s Sitcom Star Jenna Elfman Returns to FOX in New Spy Thriller

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 12:24pm

The cast of the upcoming FOX drama The Interrogator just got a lot more interesting. Popular '90s sitcom star Jenna Elfman, best known for her role as Dharma Montgomery on Dharma & Greg, has signed on.

Initially announced in February 2026, The Interrogator's premiere season is slated for 12 episodes starring Sir Stephen Fry as MI6 agent Conrad Henry. The series will also feature cast members Luke Kleintank and Michael Beach.

The Interrogator's logline (via Variety) says that the upcoming drama will feature "MI6 agent Conrad Henry (Fry) and his elite team. When conventional methods have failed, Henry’s quirky charm, superior intellect, and mind-bending behavioral maneuvers make him the only man able to lockpick the minds of the world’s most dangerous criminals."

As for Elfman's character, she will play Woodrow, who "was a rising star in the CIA, until a mission gone awry sent her tumbling down the ladder. Now she finds herself at the D.I.A. as a handler for Henry’s group. She sees it as a demotion — the first step on her climb back up to where she fell from. She supervises Henry’s cases, pushes him, and often quarrels with him — Conrad is always seven steps ahead, and Woodrow is rarely more than five steps ahead. But the pair have a grudging mutual respect that makes for a fun, strange-bedfellows partnership."

This role will show a different side of Elfman when it comes to her acting chops. Her most recent role of Eve Drake alongside Tim Allen in Shifting Gearsleaned into her signature comedic timing and lighthearted charm.

In tone and intensity, The Interrogator is shaping up to be more in line with Homeland, which starred another beloved '90s star, Claire Danes. This upcoming FOX series also leans into the same type of high-stakes storytelling and psychological tension, allowing Elfman to really show off her acting chops.

This will mark an evolution from Elfman's other recent roles in drama series, including Dark Winds, as well as her longer series arc in Fear the Walking Dead, which showcased her ability to handle intensity and survival-driven storytelling.

The Interrogator is being developed by Fox Entertainment Studios and Lionsgate Television. While no premiere date has been released yet, it is expected to air in the 2026-27 TV season.

1984 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Rock Duets of All Time’ Became a Movie Classic— ‘A Magic Moment’

Tue, 05/05/2026 - 11:49am

In 1984, two rock icons released a magical duet. The song, titled “Almost Paradise,” was recorded by Mike Reno and Ann Wilson as part of the soundtrack for the movie Footloose. The power ballad, penned by Eric Carmen and Dean Pitchford, peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 that summer and was one of three songs from the soundtrack to hit the Top 10.

At the time, “Almost Paradise was the highest charting song to date for both Heart legend Wilson and Loverboy frontman Reno.

Ultimate Classic Rock ranked the power ballad one of the "greatest rock duets” of all time, noting, “Together, the vocalists’ intertwined their voices in a soaring, heartfelt ode to romance.”

Pitchford was happy to get two of music’s biggest voices for the song

Footloose was one of the biggest movies of 1984. Not only did Pitchford write the screenplay, but he also penned the lyrics to all the soundtrack songs. In an interview with Songfacts, he revealed he spent 12 hours writing "the song "Almost Paradise" with Carmen, then pitched it to the movie director.

“We turned out a song that a lot of people wanted to record, and we were able to get Ann Wilson of Heart and Mike Reno of Loverboy,” Pitchford added. “Being able to snag two of the monster voices in '80s pop music was a real feather in our cap.”

Ann Wilson called it a ‘killer’ song

Wilson was reportedly the first approached to record the song. In an interview with Professor of Rock, she shared, “They asked me to sing the song, and they gave me my choice. They said in a perfect world, which man would you like to sing with? I went, ‘Paul Rodgers,’ you know, without even skipping a beat. But he wasn't available, and then I said Robert Plant, and of course he wasn't available. None of the ones that I chose were [available]. … Lou Gramm definitely was one …  it would have been a whole different thing with Steve Perry, you know."

Wilson added that she was very happy to ultimately work with Reno, whom she described as “a great guy” and “a gentleman.”

“It was the first of its kind,” Wilson told Songfacts of the completed song. “It was at the very dawning of the bombastic ballad era. I just think it was a great song. A killer song.”

Reno called the recording session 'a magic moment'

Reno also shared his side of the song’s backstory. In an interview with The Huffington Post, he said of Wilson,I’ve always loved Heart, I love the way she sings, and she’s a wonderful person–I don’t know if there’s any better singer out there than Ann Wilson.”

The Loverboy legend told Professor of Rock he flew to Chicago to record with Wilson during a touring break, and they recorded the song in one take after he asked her if she had learned her part of the song.

“They closed the curtains to the sound room, engineering room, and we were just chatting," he recalled. "And around the end of the chat, I asked, ‘Do you know the song, did you learn it?’ She goes, ‘Oh yeah, I know it.' And I said, ‘Do you want to try it?’ And there was a microphone just above us, so she said, ‘Sure.”

“So we stood  facing each other with one microphone, and I said, ‘Keith, can you roll and we're going to record one?’" Reno continued. "And he just recorded one, and he just went, 'Thank you. Perfect.’ Like, when does that ever happen? Singing in the same microphone like that, you know what I mean? And it's boom, done. One take and... it's literally like a magic moment. And that's kind of why I don't know, it's just every time I hear it, I just remember singing it. It wasn't like a big deal; we just sang it. She knew her part, I knew mine.”
