Costco’s Reversible Lightweight Gauze Throw Is a Breezy Warm-Weather Layer
Here's the thing about me: I love to layer. I'm one of those people who isn't really relaxed unless the temperature feels just right. It's a bit of an annoying trait, but at this point in my life, I prepare for it. It's just my thing. This goes for blankets and bedding too. I like to have options. I'm a bit like Goldilocks in that way.
When the weather warms up, finding the right throw blanket for my living room couch can really be a bit of a trial-and-error process. I want something that has just a little bit of weight to it to feel cozy, but is breathable enough where I'm not sweating underneath it. After all, I want to binge my shows in comfort. Who doesn't? If you find yourself in the same predicament (or just want a warm-weather refresh for your space), I think I've stumbled upon just the throw blanket to make everyone happy.
Berkshire Artist Collection Cotton Gauze Throw, $21.99 at Costco Berkshire Artist Collection Cotton Gauze ThrowCostco
Costco just added this cheerful Berkshire Artist Collection Cotton Gauze Throw to the warehouse club's aisles, and you're going to love the feel. It's basically two moods in one. On one side, you've got lightweight cotton gauze that feels airy, breathable and perfect for when you want just a little coziness without overheating. Flip it over, and it's all about the plush printed Velvetloft side—soft, velvety and made for peak snuggling.
In other words, it's the kind of reversible blanket that totally gets that sometimes you want light and breezy, and sometimes you want full-on comfort mode.

While the lemon colorway is totally giving fresh, springtime Mediterranean vibes, this gauzey blanket does have two other colorways to choose from. There's also a really lovely blue floral and a cute dog print for all of the animal lovers out there.
As far as size, the blanket measures 60 inches by 70 inches, so it's really your standard-size throw—just don't expect it to be big enough to share among two people. A friend is going to have to get their own for everyone to have a decent amount of blanket coverage.
Costco is really rolling out a lot of goodness in May. Aside from this reversible throw blanket, there's the prettiest set of stoneware bowls for entertaining. And for everyone out there who spends a lot of time in the kitchen, you'll want to get your hands on a set of Costco's new comfort mats in stylish designs.
Nancy Guthrie Update: 'Porch Guy' May Have Been Killed by 'the Boss,' Criminal Profiler Says
A new television special, NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery, will air on The CW on Wednesday, May 6 at 9 p.m. ET. Parade obtained preview clips from the program, hosted by Brian Entin and featuring criminal profilers Dr. Ann Burgess, Dr. Gary Brocato and Dr. Casey Jordan.
In one clip, the profilers are asked whether the individual seen on Guthrie’s front stoop acted alone. The experts suggest that it's possible there was more than one person involved in the abduction and that there could have been a "boss" type figure, orchestrating the crime behind the scenes.
During the discussion, Dr. Burgess brought up another plausible scenario.
"I just had a thought. That person [on Nancy's stoop] may have been eliminated," Dr. Burgess said. When asked who the person may have been killed by, she replied, "the boss."
"It was well-planned. They got away with it. And they pulled a type of case that we’ve never seen before, as far as we know," she added.
The possibility that the individual seen on the porch may no longer be alive has also been raised by other commentators following the case. For example, retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer discussed a similar theory during a live broadcast posted on X in mid-April. Authorities, however, have not confirmed any such scenario.
Parade spoke with Entin last week about the upcoming special, which will provide some new insight into the ongoing case.
"I think people [will find the special] interesting because [the profilers] have some fascinating theories based on past cases they’ve worked, as well as statistics," Entin told Parade. "They’re really focused on patterns in other crimes and kidnappings to help narrow down motive and who they think this [suspect] could be."
Authorities believe Guthrie, 84, was abducted from her Arizona home on Sunday, Feb. 1. Despite early leads, officials have not identified a suspect or determined her whereabouts. The case remains active as investigators continue to pursue new tips and forensic evidence.

New Proposal Could Limit Social Security Benefits—But How Would It Impact You?
It's no secret that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is in financial trouble. And while the details surrounding just how much of a shortfall the SSA plans to have in the coming years still seem to be in question, it sounds like the agency is hard at work at finding a solution so that our most vulnerable seniors can still access the money they need in retirement.
However, a new proposal from one of the groups charged with finding an answer may limit the benefits for some retirees. Are you among those who could be looking at more strict earnings caps? Keep reading to find out more.
Social Security Proposal Includes a Major Earnings CapThe Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has been hard at work in Washington, attempting to come up with a solution to ensure that the SSA doesn't run out of money in 10 years.
One of their big ideas for ensuring this doesn't happen includes a "Six-Figure Limit," according to AL.com, which is a proposal that would include the following earning limits for filers moving forward:
- A $100,000 cap for married couples
- A $50,000 cap for individuals
This would limit the amount of money each person is allowed to receive from the SSA each year, hopefully keeping more money in the agency's coffers. “Social Security faces a projected 4 percent of taxable payroll solvency gap over the next 75 years, necessitating increased revenue, slower benefit growth, or both,” AL.com says a white paper on the proposal explained. “In combination with other reforms, the Six-Figure Limit could help restore Social Security solvency in a targeted, timely, progressive, and pro-growth way.”
Related: 3 Worst States To Retire In If You Plan On Living On Social Security Alone
Who Does the Proposed Earnings Limit Apply toThe committee's plan will hit the country's highest earners the hardest. But the good news is, that's a really small pool of people. Of the estimated 56 million people who collect Social Security over age 65, fewer than 2 percent are likely to be affected. That's because this plan would only affect those who earned $184,500 a year for at least 35 years of their working lives and who delayed retirement until age 70.
Additionally, these high-income earners are likely to be less impacted by the change. That's because their high income likely means they have multiple other assets and income streams to rely on, and their Social Security payment of $5,181 (the max someone can receive as of 2026) is likely only a small part of what they bring in each month.

And, it wouldn't take away their ability to collect a monthly Social Security payment. But instead, it will limit their benefits by about 5 percent, making a small adjustment that experts believe would save an estimated $100 billion over the first ten years of implementation.

'Devil Wears Prada 2' Writer Reveals If Anna Wintour Inspired Miranda's Struggles
Things have changed since 2006, when The Devil Wears Prada was released. Lauren Weisberger wrote the fictional book based on her experience as an assistant to Anna Wintour. But did Vogue's former editor-in-chief inspire the 2026 sequel?
'Devil Wears Prada' Writer Separates Miranda Priestly from Anna WintourAline Brosh McKenna wrote the screenplay for the first and second movies. She told Variety how much Wintour, 76, was on her mind while writing the second chapter of Miranda Priestly's story.
"I don’t process the story through the lens of Anna Wintour," McKenna, 58, claimed. "In my mind, it’s Miranda. In the first script, she was already scheming and now there’s a similar plot in the second. I don’t know that it correlates to real life."

The sequel starts with Priestly aiming for a promotion with a global position. However, that is at risk after a scandal at Runway. Wintour became the Global Editorial Director at Condé Nast.
The former Vogue editor-in-chief stepped down after 37 years. She has also been part of the press run for the sequel. Wintour took the stage with Anne Hathaway at the Oscars.
"I will say, Vogue started embracing the actors pretty early on," McKenna said. "And we all understood that a movie that brings fashion front and center, even if it’s not the beat-by-beat portrayal they would have preferred, is welcome to a place like Vogue."
Streep posed as her character with Wintour for Vogue's cover story. They were similar dark sunglasses.
The magazine's new editor-in-chief, Chloé Malle, said she pitched the cover photo to Wintour, who was hesitant, according to CNN. But she later approached the Oscar winner about the photoshoot, and she agreed.

‘Perfect Crown’: Who’s Trying to Kill the Grand Prince and Seong Huiju? Our Theories So Far
If you've been watching Perfect Crown on Hulu, it's become much more than a typical rom-com. Hulu's KDrama series is also a royal political thriller laced with palace intrigue. In recent episodes, another attempt on the Grand Prince's fiancée, Seong Huiju (IU),was made, but it's not as clear-cut as it seems. So who's trying to kill her and why?
Spoiler alert! If you haven't watched the most recent episodes, stop reading and return after you have done so.
In the last episode of Perfect Crown, it was revealed that the newly minted Grand Princess suffered from drug toxicity. She would survive, much to the relief of her husband, Grand Prince I-AN (Byeon Woo-seok), but it turns out the poison was likely meant for him and not her. The drug would have been a fatal dose for him. Their goblets were mistakenly switched when Huiju tripped and knocked into the altar table. When the goblets were put back into their place, they were accidentally switched, thereby giving Huiju the dose and not I-AN.
There was previously an attempt on Huiju's life when someone tampered with her sports car and cut the brake line. Unfortunately, the young King (Kim Eun-oh) was in the car with her, which was likely not on the killer's bingo card. Are the two killings related? Or are they two separate incidents caused by two separate parties? Let's take a look at the possible suspects.
Who is trying to kill the Grand Prince and Seong Huiju on Perfect Crown? Queen Dowager Queen Dowager Yoon Yi-rangThe Queen Dowager (Gong Seung-yeon) might not have had a literal hand in either murder attempt, but she definitely is in on it somehow. Whether she greased the wheels or would reap the benefits from one or both murders is pretty much a given. Her main goal is to secure her son's ascension to the throne. Eliminating Seong Huiju out of I-An's life would have been a bonus for her.
As we saw from the last episode, the Queen Dowager's relationship with I-AN wasn't always contentious. It seems as though the Queen Dowager may have chosen one brother over another because she craved power over love or perhaps she was forced to do so by her father, who wants to maintain their family's political and royal status. This also leads into question about the young King's paternity.
Related: I Had a Problem With Hallmark’s Mahjong Movie—Until I Understood This
King I-yun King I-yunThe current King (Kim Eun-oh) is too cute for school. And while his mother is hateful, the young King is not. Hatred is learned, and if the King remains under the Queen Dowager's care, he'll likely turn into a spiteful king. But he loves his uncle, and he adores Huiju (she fed him ramen, for goodness' sake!) While he has the power to order deaths, the young royal would unlikely do so.
Grand Prince I-AN Grand Prince I-ANThere's no way on God's green earth that I-AN (Byeon Woo-seok) had a hand in Huiju's car accident, and he certainly didn't try to poison her or himself at his own wedding. While he was questioned during the inquiry, it was clear he was not a suspect. In fact, he was likely the intended victim.

Prime Minister Min Prime Minister Jeong-woo MinI'm on the fence about the Prime Minister (Noh Sang-hyun). While I don't think he had a hand in tampering with Huiju's car, did he have a hand in tampering with the wedding goblets? We know he's not fond of the prince, and we definitely know he's not happy about the nuptials, as he's been in love with Seong Huiju since prep school. We also now know that Lee Areum (Choi Ji-su) was reporting to him and not the Queen or her father, as many of us had presumed.
Aide Choi Aide Hyeon ChoiWhat can we say about the Grand Prince's right-hand man, Hyeon Choi (Yoo Su-bin)? The adorable orphan-turned-best friend-turned-prince's aide only sees the good in people and has a positive outlook on life. He doesn't seem to bear any ill will toward anyone. He would never harm the prince and those the prince loves. Plus, we want to see a happy ending for him and the Grand Princess' aide, Ms. Do (Lee Yeon).
Aide Do Aide Hye-jeong DoMs. Do (Yeon) has been a loyal employee of Seong Huiju and the Castle Group for years. While she wasn't too fond of the whole marriage of convenience between her boss and the prince, she didn't object. She has stood by her boss through thick and thin, so it's unlikely she's a suspect.
Huiju's father Seong Yeong-gukThe Chairman of Castle Group and Huiju's father, Seong Yeong-guk (Cho Seung-yun) might be cold and abrasive with his daughter, but he would not order her death and from his actions at the hospital, it's unlikely he tampered with the goblets. While Huiju thinks her father hates her, he obviously doesn't hate her that much if he gave her control of Castle Beauty. Like many Asian fathers, he likely can't express his affection for his kids (especially daughters) even if he is proud of them.
Screenshot Han Da-yeongHuiju's sister-in-law, Han Da-yeong (Chae Seo-an) wants power and prestige, but would she go so far as murder to get it? Unlikely. She wants her husband to be the sole successor to Castle Group, and with Huiju joining the royal family, that's a given. Besides, she has no reason to kill the prince, nor would she have the means to tamper with the wedding goblets.
This might be a stretch, but she looks a little bit like Lee Areum, the spy in the Prince's private residence. Might they be related?
Screenshot Court Lady Choi Jin-sukCourt Lady Choi (Park Jun-myun) has been with Grand Prince I-AN since childhood so it's unlikely she tampered with the goblets. While she disliked Huiju in the beginning, she definitely warmed up to her quickly enough.
Pictured (L to R): Jung Ji-an, Lee Si-hun The Grand Prince's Private Residence StaffSteward Kim (Lee Si-hun) and Manager Kim (Jung Ji-an) are part of the prince's main staff at his private residence and fast fans of Huiju and the Prince as a couple. They would only want the best for the couple, so we're crossing them off the suspect list.
Lee Areum Lee AreumThe junior staff member at the Prince's private residence, Lee Areum (Choi Ji-su) is a known spy to the Prince and his inner circle. While viewers assumed she was working for the Queen Dowager or her father, it appears she may be spying for Prime Minister Min! Areum is too low level to pull off orchestrating Huiju's car brakes failing or poisoning the goblets, but we could easily see her as an accomplice for other crimes.
Lord Inpyeong Lord InpyeongYoon Sung-won (Jo Jae-yoon) is the head of the royal court and the father of the Queen Dowager. He is at the top of our list of suspects as he has the means and motive for both attempts of murder. When his daughter pretty much confessed she set the fire that killed her husband, the King, after he signed a royal edict to abdicate the throne and named Grand Prince I-AN as his successor, the Lord started to take matters into his own hands to ensure his family's political and royal lineage would remain intact. He had the means to hire the mechanic that tampered with Huiju's car and then also had the means to have him eliminated as well.
With his daughter already in the palace, he likely has spies already entrenched there and is loyal to him and the Queen Dowager. We can easily see one of his lackeys lacing I-AN's wedding goblet with a fatal dose of medicine. He also jumped up from his seat and said, "Hold on..." when news of Huiju's collapse went public.

1953 Classic Starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly Ranked a ‘Best Love Story of All Time’
Some stars are just perfectly matched.
Such is the case with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in the romantic Hitchcock crime film, To Catch a Thief. While Grant stole a lot of hearts in his two decade run in Hollywood, his chemistry with Kelly is notable in the film and it landed the movie ranked among the best on screen romances of all time according to Variety.
Set in the dreamy French Riviera, To Catch a Thief follows cat burglar John Robie (played by Cary Grant) who has retired from his thieving days and is instead tending to vineyards. A series of copy cat robberies make it appear he's back in action, so John sets out to clear his name and uphold his reputation. John meets Frances Stevens (played by Grace Kelly), the daughter of a wealthy widow with many of the most expensive jewels in the area. The two begin a heated romance before Francie and her mother's jewels are stolen, which destroys the budding love between the two and gives the retired burglar yet another reason to set the record straight.

While the film has widely been praised for the connection between the stars and their performances in general, overall critics were mixed about it upon release in 1955. The Guardian even went on to call the film "a thorough disappointment." Despite this, To Catch a Thief has withstood the test of time and maintains a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes with filmgoers calling it "pure charm" and "a pair of perfectly matched stars in Cary Grant and Grace Kelly."
To Catch a Thief would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. In 2002, the film was included in "AFI's 100 Years...100 Passions" at number 46 for The American Film Institute.
Because at the end of the day, passion and chemistry between stars is what makes for a best love story of all time.

Lay's Brings Back All Dressed Chips Flavor – But Only At This Iconic Grocery Chain
There's nothing quite like tucking into a freshly opened bag of Lay's Chips, is there?
Providing the perfect blend between a crisp potato chip and flavorful savory seasoning, Lay's remains the go-to choice for anyone in the mood for a salty snack for a reason.
While we're always partial to any one of Lay's classic potato chip products, the iconic chip brand just confirmed the return of a signature flavor. The only downside is that said limited-time flavor can be found at only one exclusive supermarket location.
According to Allrecipes, Sam's Club is once again bringing back Lay's best-selling All Dressed Chips. As shoppers might remember, the flavor blends a motley mix of spices into the ultimate flavor combination, ensuring shoppers have the perfect savory snack for the spring and summer season.
Originally launched in Canada, Lay's All Dressed Chips specifically refers to the mix of flavors and spices featured in its diverse mix. For example, the brand specifically highlights the chip's "sweet, savory, tangy" flavor profile as one of the product's biggest, most unique features, leaving little reason to wonder about its popularity among shoppers.
If past reviews are any indication, the returning chip flavor is guaranteed to prove a smash hit among frequent visitors to Sam's Club. Previously, multiple social media accounts shared their personal love for the flavor, highlighting its bold and zesty taste and naming it among Lay's best limited-time releases.
"I've been dying to get my hands on these. THEYRE AMAZING!!" one fan wrote on Reddit. "I took a pic of the chips themselves in the bag, and I think they look great. You'll notice they're not covered in seasoning flavor, which had me suspicious at first, but the flavor is like inside the potato chips! They're full of flavor and so good."
"I highly recommend them, try and buy them so that they become more popular," the user went on to say.
Disney’s Big Thunder Mountain Just Reopened—But It’s Already Facing a Major Hiccup
If you’ve been counting down the days for the 16-month refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to end, you aren't alone. As of May 3, the construction walls finally came down at the Magic Kingdom. However, in true "wildest ride" fashion, the mountain is already proving difficult to tame.
By midday, reports began flooding social media and the My Disney Experience app that the attraction was experiencing downtime. As one frustrated fan noted on Reddit, the ride was "down on opening day," leaving hundreds of guests who had rope-dropped Frontierland standing in the sun. While technical growing pains are common for an attraction that just underwent a "mountain-top to cavern-deep" rebuild, it’s a big moment for Disney as fans flock to see the new updates.
Before you head off on the 'Wildest Ride in the Wilderness,' here is everything you need to know about the update—and why you should check your app before you trek to the back of the park, as the spirits of the mountain seem to be causing some more down time.

The 38-Inch Height MilestoneThe biggest win for families is the official lowering of the height requirement to 38 inches (down from 40). Disney safety teams gave the green light for this change following the installation of brand-new track and refreshed trains. For parents, this means many preschoolers can finally experience their first "big kid" coaster alongside their siblings, provided the trains stay on the tracks.

Inside the 'Rainbow Caverns'For those who do get a chance to board, the highlight is the debut of the Rainbow Caverns. This scene is a stunning subterranean world filled with "phosphorescent pools, shimmering and illuminating iridescent stalagmites and stalactites." It’s a beautiful tribute to Disney history, but the experience still packs a punch—a "menacing rumble from deep within" suggests that the mountain spirits aren't exactly thrilled about their new visitors.

Smoother Rails, Shinier GoldThe total track replacement was intended to preserve the ride's "hootin’ an’ hollerin’ energy" while smoothing out the jerky transitions that often left guests reaching for the Advil. Early riders have also noticed more vivid storytelling, including shimmering gold-filled veins in the rock work that highlight the ill-fated dreams of the mountain's fictional founder, Barnabas T. Bullion.
The Insider Tip: If you're in the park today, don't just trudge to Frontierland blindly. Use the live wait-time trackers and be prepared for "intermittent downtime" as Disney works out the kinks in the new system. As the miners say: hold onto your hats and glasses, because this reopening is off to a bumpy start.

2000s Rocker Announces One-Year Anniversary After Personal Struggles
John Moyer, a longtime member of the iconic band Disturbed, shared personal news that prompted an outpouring of support from fans.
The bassist is taking fans on a deeply personal journey as he opens up about what lies ahead with the band and his commitment to lasting change and a healthier future.
In a recent post on Instagram, the 52-year-old musician shared a live broadcast he did on Saturday, May 2, where he spoke about a major milestone that marks a turning point in his life.
According to him, he is celebrating a “really special day” for him, adding that he wanted to commemorate his one-year sobriety with his fans.
“Today I am one year with no drinking, no alcohol. It's a big deal for me,” he said, as transcribed by Blabbermouth, "I have been a lifelong drinker since I was a teenager. It seems like it was tied up with every part of my life, my social circles, my professional life.
The bassist also mentioned his experience in the rock and metal scene, noting the environment’s unhealthy connection to drugs and alcohol.

Moyer continued by revealing what pushed him to change his habits and leave the unhealthy lifestyle.
According to him, it was during Disturbed’s The Sickness Tour in celebration of their 25th anniversary.
He considered this his breaking point and realized that he “had been wanting to quit for a while.”
“The first half of the tour I was drinking a lot, and my behavior was becoming erratic and I wasn't the person I wanted to be,” he mentioned on his Instagram live. “And I was struggling. And we took a break in the middle of that tour — it was, like, a week or week-and-a-half-long break between the first leg and the second leg — and it had become clear to me that my bandmates were worried about me.”
View this post on Instagram
He mentioned the second leg of their tour was a “wake-up call” that hit him when his bandmates encouraged him to “clean up” and “get some help” once the tour was over.
“ I took it very seriously, and when I went back out on the road, my very first show was in Seattle, and that was the first show in as long as I can remember that I didn't drink after the show,” the bassist recalled, adding “I never really drank that much before the show — maybe a shot or two, which when you're drinking a lot of alcohol, that's not much.”
Their show in Seattle was a memorable one for him because it was the first time he “didn't drink at all,” which was a big deal for him.
During the early stages of his sobriety, Moyer realized that he was “drinking to escape the problems” caused by his habits.
Calling it a “weird, vicious and terrible cycle,” he was proud to have finally broken free from it.
“And the reason I'm sharing this is not because I'm looking for congratulations or anything like that, but I feel like it's important that if anyone out there is struggling with alcohol and drug abuse, that if I can beat it, I truly believe anyone can beat it,” he said, assuring his fans and followers that “there is help out there.”
Like the Disturbed member, several musicians have publicly embraced their journey to sobriety. This includes Elton John, who has been sober since 1990 and has been an advocate of it, helping fellow artists like Eminem.
Adding to the list is “The Godfather of Shock Rock,” Alice Cooper, now more than 30 years into his sobriety.

Bindi Irwin Misses Gala Honoring Late Dad Steve Irwin as Mom Terri Shares Candid Health Update
Bindi Irwin recently missed the Steve Irwin Gala for a second year in a row amid her ongoing health battle. The DWTS champ's mom, Terri Irwin, shared an honest health update on the red carpet.
On May 2, Terri, 61, and her son, Robert Irwin, 22, spoke to reporters and posed for photos ahead of the annual fundraising event in Los Angeles. The Steve Irwin Gala honors Bindi and Robert's late father, who died in 2006 after being pierced in the heart by a stingray barb.
"Bindi is doing so much better now," Terri told E! News of he 27-year-old daughter. "Things like a lot of travel are a bit challenging for her at the moment, and so she'll be here next year to celebrate this wonderful night."
She added, "But this year, she's just staying a little close to home. So ironically, it's less taxing for her to be home feeding crocodiles. But that's what she's doing every day in our Crocoseum."
To that, Robert pointed out, "You gotta remember, like, Australia Zoo is 500 in our team. There's about 500,000 acres of conservation land, and someone's gotta hold down the fort. So Bindi's doing a great job at that. They're with us in spirit, for sure."

In 2025, Bindi also missed the Steve Irwin Gala after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. Terri took to Instagram to share a photo of her daughter in a hospital bed and praise her strength.
“I am so proud of you, Bindi. Facing another surgery with courage and determination," the former Crocodile Hunter star began her update.
View this post on InstagramTerri continued, “Removing your appendix was expected, but also having 14 endometriosis lesions removed, and a hernia repair, was a lot. "I love you so much and I know you will recover stronger than ever. 💕.”
In May 2025, Bindi shared a hopeful health update on Instagram, writing, "Healing. Thank you for your incredible words of support and kindness."
She added, “The reason I share my health journey is because more girls and women desperately need answers to their undiagnosed pain. I’ve battled with endometriosis for more than 12 years. This disease is crippling and can make you feel incredibly isolated.”

The Popular Lunchtime Habit Brain Health Experts Are Begging You To Stop
We often consider habits a "small" part of our day. In fact, we may literally refer to certain routines, like having a piece of fruit at breakfast every day, as "small habits." Yet, brain health experts say this term is a total misnomer. The things we do daily can significantly affect our cognitive function.
Small habits—how we eat, move, sleep, manage stress, and even how often we pause—send constant signals to the brain about whether the environment is safe, nourished and sustainable," states Dr. Dung Trinh, MD, an internist at MemorialCare Medical Group and the chief medical officer of Healthy Brain Clinic.
Over time, these signals affect inflammation, blood flow, blood sugar balance, stress hormone levels and how well our brain cells "talk" to one another, he explains.
For fellow normies in the back: "The brain is always 'listening' to our routine," Dr. Trinh says. "When people understand that, they stop thinking of brain health as something abstract or genetic-only and start seeing that everyday choices can either protect the brain or wear it down."
That means our lunchtime routines matter for our brain health, even when we have zero time to think about it, because we're working or on the go. Yet we may sabotage our thinking later in the day by—however understandable the reason—not remaining mindful of our afternoon rituals. Brain health experts are begging people to stop one particularly popular habit because it can affect our short and long-term cognitive function (and work quality—just saying).
The Popular Lunchtime Habit Brain Health Experts Are Begging You To StopMultiple brain health experts agree that eating lunch at your desk is a habit that can impact your cognitive function. Research backs up their advice. A 2021 Cell Reports study suggested that taking short breaks can help our brains learn new skills.
Below, brain health experts used this research and their clinical insights to explain why it's worth eating lunch away from your desk moving forward.

1. It helps your brain process your day (so far)Brain health experts advise against waiting until you clock out to let your brain process what you've already done.
"Stepping away gives the brain a chance to consolidate information," says Dr. Jasdeep S. Hundal, Psy.D. ABPP-CN, the director of The Center for Memory & Healthy Aging at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center's Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute.
He knows taking a mid-day break can feel like a big ask—you're busy, after all. Yet, he says that a break is actually an investment in your efficiency later in the day.
"You are not losing time but instead allowing the brain to organize and store what you just worked on, which supports learning and memory," he tells Parade. "This is part of how the brain strengthens new information throughout the day, not just overnight."
2. You'll reset attentionHumans weren't wired to work nonstop for eight-plus hours without a brain break.
"Attention declines the longer you work without a break," Dr. Hundal says. "Over time, your brain becomes less efficient, even if you are still sitting at your desk. Taking time away allows those systems to reset so you can return with better focus, fewer errors and improved mental efficiency."
Plus, one neurologist points out that the eyes and brain share the "same fuel," so not giving both a beat now and then can do a number on your cognitive function.
"Sustained visual focus on a screen depletes a neurotransmitter called adenosine, building up 'attention fatigue,'" states Dr. Sanam Hafeez, Psy. D., a New York-based neuropsychologist and director of Comprehend the Mind. "Your brain isn't broken. It's genuinely running low."
When you step aside or into a different environment, Dr. Hafeez says you'll give your visual cortex new input, such as distance, movement or natural light.
"This input helps flush that fatigue and essentially recharges your attentional battery before the afternoon," she explains.
3. You'll unlock your brain's creative problem-solving networkYou'll actually become more of a rockstar at work (and even at home with kids who are always bickering) if you take a minute away from your desk.
"The brain’s save mode, the default mode network (DMN), allows for creativity," explains Dr. Julie Pilitsis, MD, a physician executive for functional neurosurgery at Banner Health. "When you step away from a problem and let your mind wander, the DMN begins generating new spontaneous associations between ideas."
Not sold? Dr. Pilitsis encourages you to think about your latest "aha" moments. Did they happen at your desk or while you were showering, walking or—dare we say it—eating somewhere other than your work station?
"'These 'aha' moments are not when you are completely immersed in what you are doing at work, but rather they happen in a restful, less demanding state, like while eating a sandwich on a bench," she shares.
4. Stepping away dials down your stress hormones and protects your memory centerWe likely don't need to tell you that your day can get rather stressful, but eating at your desk—even if you're behind on something—can make it even worse.
"Sustained work without breaks keeps the brain's stress-response system activated and raises cortisol levels," Dr. Pilitsis says. "When cortisol stays high, new cells are not formed, and existing cells are not kept healthy."
She adds that taking a genuine break, like eating, can lower your body's cortisol levels.
"It also allows the brain’s 'save mode' to be activated, not only allowing memories to be integrated but also emotions to be regulated," she says.
5. It supports digestionWait, aren't we talking about brain health? Dr. Trinh shares that digestive health is part of brain health
"Better digestion supports better brain function," he says. "The brain and gut are in constant communication. If you are hunched over a keyboard, distracted, rushing and barely tasting your food, your body may not digest that meal as efficiently."
Instead, Dr. Trinh says you'll eat in a stressed and distracted state, potentially contributing to overeating, indigestion and unstable energy later—none of which are brain fuel.

Other Brain-Healthy Habits To AdoptBesides taking breaks throughout the day, especially at lunch, there are other habits you can add to your brain health toolbox.
Dr. Pilitsis shares that other habits to adapt for better brain health include:
- Exercise
- Diet
- Getting enough sleep
- Stress management
"The brain is constantly remodeling itself in response to daily behaviors, a property called neuroplasticity," she says. "Every day habits are direct inputs into the brain's hardware, shaping its structure and function over a lifetime."

3 Steps To Building Brain-Healthy HabitsChanging and maintaining habits is challenging, but your brain will thank you for giving it your best shot. Brain health experts shared top tips for how to slowly but surely overhaul your habits, like eating lunch at your desk, to support your noggin.
1. Avoid shameSometimes, we're hardest on ourselves, but Dr. Hafeez shares that shame can make it harder to change.
"When we beat ourselves up over our habits, our brain goes into a stress response, which tends to push us right back toward the very behaviors we're trying to break," she points out. "Think about it: Most people don't eat junk food or skip the gym less after feeling terrible about themselves; they usually do it more."
2. Reframe goalsEldest daughters may cringe, but remember that perfection is not the goal when it comes to habits.
"Sustainable change comes from consistency, not perfection," Dr. Hundal says. "Small, incremental improvements repeated over time are what actually reshape habits and have a meaningful impact on brain health."
3. Think small for big changesThis one combines the first two steps—reducing shame and aiming for small, consistent changes.
"Instead of saying, 'I’m terrible at this,' it is much more helpful to say, 'What is one small thing I can improve today?'" Dr. Trinh reports. "That approach lowers resistance, builds confidence, and creates habits that actually stick."
Then, go out there and take action—like taking 10 minutes for lunch.
