“From 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, it’s Late Night with Seth Meyers!“

It was announced on Tuesday that the beloved talk show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, is returning for its Season 14 premiere next Monday, Sept. 21, with special guest Kelly Clarkson. Her appearance will come three weeks after she wrapped her seven-season run on The Kelly Clarkson Show, which aired its final episode on August 31. Meanwhile, this is Meyers’ first show in seven weeks, the longest the show has been dark (not including the 2023 WGA strike, which took place from April to October).

So far, no other celebrity guests or musical performances have been announced, but usually, Meyers invites two guests for interviews.

This marks the first episode back since July 30, when the Saturday Night Live alum interviewed Timothy Olyphant and Cooper Hoffman, as well as taped a segment of A Closer Look, where he mocked President Donald Trump for claiming he didn’t understand the word “affordability,” despite using it as a central campaign promise.

Though his full show wasn’t airing on NBC for the whole month of August, Meyers launched a special video podcast version called A Closer Look Out of Office, where he is joined by his writer and producer, Sal Gentile, and they unpack major current events and news stories together. Episodes were posted twice a week on YouTube.

In addition, Meyers performed nearly a dozen stand-up shows across the Northeast, including the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, a live benefit show in Martha’s Vineyard, and two back-to-back sets at the Nantucket Performing Arts Center in Massachusetts. He is also set to perform at the Beacon Theater in New York City with John Oliver on Sept. 27, as well as continue his tour around the country during the fall and late January.

Born in Illinois and raised in New Hampshire, Meyers started his comedy career while he was a student at Northwestern University, where he majored in film and was a part of the school’s improv sketch group, the Mee-Ow Show. After performing for various comedy groups around Chicago and even in the Netherlands, Meyers joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2001, serving as a Weekend Update anchor and head writer during his tenure. He left SNL in February 2014 after 13 years on the show to host Late Night.

A novel’s opening line is a promise of intrigue, a lure to make a reader want to read the next sentence, or—as the legendary Stephen King put it—an invitation that says, “Listen. Come in here. You want to know about this.” Indeed, the maestro of horror is also a master of opening lines, skillfully utilizing those first few words to lure readers into his narratives.

In fact, King’s 1982 novel The Gunslinger is one of those books with one of the greatest beginnings: “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” But King’s one-liner landed on Collider’s recent list of “The 10 Best Opening Lines in Book History, Ranked,” at No. 5.

The best opening line in book history, according to the outlet, was actually written by influential Russian author Leo Tolstoy for his 19th-century tragedy, Anna Karenina.

“Leo Tolstoy didn’t seem too afraid of peeking early when he wrote Anna Karenina, since the first line—’Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way’—is just that good and memorable,” Collider wrote. “Beyond what it does for Anna Karenina, as a book, it more or less summarizes what makes stories interesting or uninteresting: unhappiness.”

Published in serial installments from 1875 to 1877 and released as a book in 1878, Anna Karenina unfolds through two main plots that contrast two very different views on love, family, and society. In one, Anna, a married aristocrat, leaves her cold husband for a military officer, choosing passion and love over high society and social norms. In the other, Konstantin, a wealthy landowner, searches for meaning through work, family, and faith.

One of the most famous lines in literature, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way,” serves as the philosophical blueprint for the entire novel, setting up Tolstoy’s exploration of relationships with a simple framework: Happiness requires a delicate, uniform balance of many ingredients, while at the same time, unhappiness can be triggered by an infinite number of unique failures.

Tolstoy’s first novel after War and Peace was partly inspired by the tragic fate of Anna Stepanovna Pirogova, a woman who worked as a housekeeper for his neighbor. In 1872, after being scorned by her lover, Pirogova threw herself under a train near Tolstoy’s estate.

According to The New Republic, Tolstoy personally observed the autopsy and was “terribly shaken.” And the tragedy became one of the real-life echoes woven into his novel, which he began writing the following year. At the time, Russia was also experiencing a broader rise in suicides that influenced the cultural climate surrounding the novel, which took nearly four years to finish.

“My work is not moving,” he wrote to Afanasy Fet, a friend and poet, TNR shared. To another, he complained, “Everything has been arranged to distract me: acquaintances, hunting, a court session in October with me as a juryman, and then the painter.”

Eventually, however, everything clicked into place, as he wrote, “I thought up characters and events, began to go on with it, then of course changed it, and suddenly all the threads became so well and truly tied up that the result was a novel which I finished in draft form today, a very lively, impassioned and well-finished novel which I’m very pleased with and which will be ready in two weeks’ time if God gives me strength.”

Those weeks, of course, turned into years, with the first installment published in The Russian Herald, the same journal that published War and Peace and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, offering a taste of what Tolstoy had in store for his second standalone novel. But Tolstoy stalled on the rest of the book as he struggled with self-doubt, personal loss, and family sickness.

“My God,” he wrote to Nikolai Strakhov, another friend and literary critic, “if only someone would finish A. Karenina for me! It’s unbearably repulsive.” In another letter to Strakhov, he added, “I’m disgusted with what I’ve written. I need to cross it all out and throw it away and disown it and say ‘I’m sorry, I won’t do it again.’”

Fortunately for the literary world, Tolstoy finished the book. A wildly popular and massive commercial success when it was serialized in the 1800s, the novel captivated readers immediately, with it functioning as the “Harlequin Romance” of its era.

“Anna Karenina is a sprawling family drama, and there is indeed a great deal of unhappiness and turmoil explored throughout,” Collider concludes. “You know what you’re in for, though, thanks to Tolstoy starting things off in such a manner.”

Decades later, the novel has achieved masterpiece status, with critics and authors regarding it as one of the greatest novels ever written. Beyond the page, it’s inspired dozens of film and television adaptations since the early 20th century, including Clarence Brown’s 1935 film starring the iconic Greta Garbo and Joe Wright’s Oscar-winning 2012 adaptation starring Keira Knightley.

For more than a century, Anna Karenina has been pored over and dissected, with its roughly 330,000 words read again and again. And still, Tolstoy’s opening remains the book’s most celebrated 14 words. In a single sentence, he told readers exactly what kind of story they were about to enter, with the rest of the novel spending hundreds of pages proving him right.

That’s about to change with Season 35, as Burgess returns to the dance competition for the first time in five years, competing with Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron. 

“I can’t wait to be back in the ballroom with my dancing family, and mostly, it feels so good to be coming home,” Burgess said on Good Morning America in August 2026. “I’ll see you all soon.”

When did Sharna Burgess join Dancing With the Stars? 

Burgess made her first DWTS appearance during Season 13 in 2011 as a member of the troupe. She became a pro during Season 16, which aired in 2013, and finished in seventh place with celebrity partner Andy Dick. 

Burgess went on to compete in Seasons 17 through 27 of the show, partnering with stars including Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter and Olympic gold medalist ice dancer Charlie White. 

After producers didn’t ask Burgess back for Season 28, she returned for Seasons 29 and 30. During the latter, which aired in 2021, she and Green became the first real-life couple to compete on the show, finishing in 13th place. They welcomed a son, Zane, in 2022, and announced their engagement the following year.

Why did Sharna Burgess leave Dancing With the Stars? 

Burgess’ first absence from DWTS occurred in Season 28 in 2019 when she was shocked to learn that she was cut from the pro roster after winning the prior season with partner Bobby Bones. 

“There was no hint that this would be the case,” she told Entertainment Tonight in September 2019. “There never is, and, by the way, we all go through the same thing every season. We don’t know if we are back until we get that pick-up letter.”

Burgess was back the next year, however, competing on Season 29 with actor Jesse Metcalfe and finishing in 12th place. After season 30, Burgess left the show by choice to focus on starting a family with Green. She later admitted she thought she’d return for Season 32, but the call never came. 

“Last season, I was supposed to come back, but Zane was only eight weeks old,” Burgess recalled on a September 2023 episode of her Oldish podcast, referring to season 31. “It just felt like I needed to sit in motherhood with Zane. It was always, ‘I want to come back next year,’ and ‘Of course, we love you, we’ll always have you.’” 

When her fellow pros started getting their offers for Season 32, Burgess was surprised that her own phone didn’t ring. “It was such a shock, because I wasn’t expecting it, it was tough,” she said on the podcast. “My last five years on the show have been rocky — not because of the show. I love the show deeply, but we had a new executive producer come in, I think five years ago now. I had just won with Bobby Bones, and he decided to not bring me back. There’s a lot of speculation as to why. My win with Bobby was the most explosive end, controversial win of Dancing With the Stars history. So I got caught up in this whirlwind of hate for that win, which was really yucky.” 

Bones and Burgess beat out frontrunners Milo Manheim (with Witney Carson) and Evanna Lynch (with Keo Motsepe) because of fan votes, which led judge Carrie Ann Inaba to claim changes had been made in the scoring system to prevent similar outcomes in the future. 

In the same podcast episode, Burgess further claimed that she had a “difficult” partner in Metcalfe for Season 29, though she didn’t name him at the time. She also wasn’t happy with the way her Season 30 story arc focused on her real-life romance with Green. “I did text someone at that time and was like, ‘Hey, this isn’t what we signed up for. If this is what you want for us, you just have to eliminate us because we can’t do this,’” she recalled. “And we were quickly eliminated after that.”

What has Sharna Burgess said about coming back to Dancing With the Stars? 

After her five-year absence, Burgess is thrilled to be dipping and twirling again. “It’s been everything to be back,” she told Entertainment Weekly in September 2026. “It’s like I never left. It’s always home. It’s always a part of me, but I’ve missed it so much. I’m so grateful I get to be a part of it. This cast is incredible, and to have a partner like Tyler, it’s a dream. It’s even, for me, a pinch-me moment that I get to do this again.”

Cameron, meanwhile, described her as a “dream of a partner” who was doing an excellent job at helping him learn the ropes of ballroom dancing. 

“That’s my style,” she told EW. “I’m a drill sergeant, a football coach, that’s what my style always is. And he is an athlete that has that mentality, so it’s honestly a perfect match.”

How many times has Sharna Burgess won Dancing With the Stars? 

Burgess has won only one season of DWTS, dancing to victory in 2018 with celebrity partner Bones on season 27. Their win caused controversy at the time because it was seemingly propelled by fan votes. Former host Tom Bergeron said in 2025 that Bones’ win was the one that shocked him the most during his tenure with the show — but later apologized for his remarks after Bones sent his Mirrorball trophy back to ABC. 

“Bobby, it wasn’t my intention to hurt your feelings. My ‘ouch’ was based on my honest feeling that your win spoke to a need to address the balance between judge and viewer voting,” Bergeron wrote via Instagram in November 2025. “I always felt bad that you & Sharna had to deal with the aftermath of that win & I certainly regret pouring any salt into that old wound.”

Simone Biles is back on the football field.

The Olympic gymnast arrived at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to cheer for her husband, Jonathan Owens, on his first game with the Colts. The Week 1 matchup was against the Baltimore Ravens and took place on Sunday.

Biles arrived wearing a custom blue-and-white minidress, inspired by Owens’ uniform. His last name stretched across the front of the tie-up plunging dress, while his No. 38 appeared on the back. To finish off the look, she topped it off with a pair of white heeled boots, a matching white purse and a diamond necklace.

She shared close-up pictures of her outfit on Instagram on Monday, writing “some would say ‘the best time of the year’ 💙,” as her caption.

Before the game started, Biles stood by the touchdown posts where Owens came to greet her with a hug and kiss. Then, the 29-year-old gymnast stepped back and turned around to give Owens a better look at her outfit. His reaction was immediate — a huge smile, and then they did their special handshake — before he ran onto the field.

Prior to joining the Colts for the 2026 NFL season, Owens was a safety for the Chicago Bears during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. For Biles, custom NFL fashion is not new — as it has almost become a tradition for every game she attends. During his seasons with the Bears, Biles regularly styled his name and jersey into a unique look.

The two athletes got married in 2023, first at a courthouse in Houston a month before a larger ceremony with family and friends in Cabo. They met in 2020 through the dating app Raya and got engaged in February 2022.

The Colts lost to the Ravens last Sunday with a final score of 41 – 23. This upcoming Sunday, on Sept. 20, the Colts will play against the Kansas City Chiefs on their home field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mike Marino, known as “New Jersey’s Bad Boy of Comedy,” died at the age of 63 on Tuesday, September 15, his family announced.

“For more than three decades, Mike made audiences around the world laugh. He was a comedian, actor, storyteller and performer whose Italian-American heritage, New Jersey upbringing and larger-than-life personality became the heart of his comedy,” a tribute post shared via Marino’s Instagram read. “From legendary comedy clubs to theatres, cruise ships and stages around the world, Mike had an incredible gift for making people feel like family. His unforgettable characters: Cousin Mooney, Uncle Tommy, Cousin Michelle and G.I. Giovanni became beloved parts of the world he created.”

Marino had been battling brain cancer and was placed in hospice care in the days before his death.

In addition to taking the stage at some of the country’s most iconic comedy clubs, Marino lent his talents to shows like As the World Turns, One Life to Live, Becker, Nikki, Frasier and Party of Five.

He was inducted into the New Jersey Comedy Hall of Fame in 2008, and earned the USO Bob Hope Comedy Award in 2015. He also earned a Best Actor Clio Award nomination. Marino was featured in the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada, seven years in a row.

Starbucks just unveiled two new “Secret Menu” Frappuccinos inspired by iconic Peanuts characters Snoopy and Charlie Brown.

In a Sept. 15 news release, the coffee chain not only highlighted its new Peanuts + Starbucks drinkware and merch line but also announced two frozen drinks: the Charlie Brown Mocha Frappuccino blended beverage and the Snoopy Cookie Frappuccino blended beverage.

The Charlie Brown Mocha Frappuccino “swirls creamy pumpkin spice flavors with a sweet mocha ribbon, topped with pumpkin spice cold foam and a mocha drizzle.” The Starbucks news release quipped, “It’s as charming and classic as Charlie Brown himself—but without his perennial bad luck!”

Meanwhile, the Snoopy Cookie Frappuccino “combines vanilla bean flavor and white mocha sauce, topped with pumpkin spice cold foam and crunchy cookie crumbles for a delicious treat.” The drink is “inspired by Snoopy’s joyful spirit,” per Starbucks, which also promised that “it’s a tail-wagging delight with every sip.”

Lisa Rinna is famous for her shag haircut, but for the past few years she’s been experimenting with different styles, lengths, hair colors, wigs and extensions. And at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, she continued to push her style.

Rinna, 63, arrived at the Peacock Theater with her short hair swept deep to one side and fully slicked-back, a growing hair trend this fall. Celebrity stylist Brian Fisher created the look, and posted behind-the-scenes photos on his Instagram on Monday.

But Rinna wasn’t the only celebrity to skip a blowout at the Emmys. Carey Mulligan, 41, wore a combed-back look to the awards show and Keri Russell, 50, wore a slicked-back low bun to the event.

All year, slicked-back styles have been making red carpet appearances. Sharon Stone, 68, wore the look in Cannes in May and Charlize Theron, 51, played with the trend on The Odyssey press tour. Not to mention, Caroline Herrera, 87, just wore a slicked-back look to New York City’s Fashion week.

Rinna and Fisher opted for a side-part to accentuate the sleek style. Senior stylist Chloe Pasi of NYC THE TEAM hair salon in Manhattan previously told Parade that the side part is officially back after “a good five-year hiatus.”

The center part, which is still showing up on the red carpet as well, is part of the trending clean-girl aesthetic, which favors symmetry, Pasi said. “But now, I think we are seeing people start to grow bored of the same look and want to make some more bold decisions with their style,” she added.

Brian Fisher posted that he used K-18 products to achieve the look “to keep hair and scalp healthy while styling.”

Jimmy Eat World is stepping away from the stage after frontman Jim Adkins experienced a frightening medical emergency.

Adkins revealed that the band was preparing to perform at the Vans Warped Tour in Mexico City on Sunday, September 13, when he noticed something wasn’t right with his eyesight.

“Sunday, as we were preparing to play at Warped Tour in Mexico City I noticed a shadow cloud creeping in on my vision,” he wrote on Instagram two days later. “With some quick research, I knew I had to seek medical help immediately.”

An examination revealed Adkins had a detached retina and needed surgery as soon as possible. Performing could have risked permanent damage, he explained, forcing the band to pull out of the festival. Thankfully, Adkins is now home and recovering after undergoing surgery.

But the medical emergency means the band will also miss two major festivals this week: Louder Than Life in Louisville, Kentucky, and Shaky Knees in Atlanta. Louder Than Life runs September 17-20 and features a massive rock and metal lineup including Iron Maiden, My Chemical Romance, Tool, and Pantera. Shaky Knees, meanwhile, takes over Atlanta’s Piedmont Park from September 18-20 and is already sold out.

“We are disappointed to be missing you,” Adkins told fans. “Take care of yourselves, listen to your body and we’ll be rocking with you all again soon!”

For the most part, fans were understanding and wished Adkin’s well.

“so happy that you listened to your body & got checked out – your health & recovery is the most important thing! get well soon 🖤,” one fan commented.

“We were sad you couldn’t play in Mexico City, but we would have been sadder if playing risked your health,” wrote another.

A third replied, “That’s so scary!! So glad you took the time to get checked out and got it fixed! Hope you heal up quick!”

Adkins’ quick decision to seek medical attention may have been especially important. According to the National Eye Institute, retinal detachment occurs when the retina (aka the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) is pulled away from its normal position. Delaying treatment can increase the risk of permanent vision loss or blindness.

For now, Adkins hasn’t shared exactly when Jimmy Eat World will return to the stage. Fans should keep an eye on their social media for updates.

The final DJ round ended with Riggle in the lead at $17,800, followed by Jalipa at $ 10,000 and Mullen at $ 7,400. Everyone answered FJ correctly, with Riggle adding $5,401 to his daily total of $23,201, maintaining a lead and taking a fourth consecutive win. Mullen wagered almost everything, adding $7,300 for a third-place total of $14,700, while Jalipe wagered $3,201 for a second-place total of $14,801.

Riggle will be back on Wednesday for attempt number 5.

What is The Murder of JonBenet Ramsey About?

The Murder of JonBenet Ramsey, starring McCarthy and Owen, is headed to Netflix, The Hollywood Reporter shared, after the limited series was originally set to play on Paramount+. Originally titled Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenet Ramsey, the series follows the six-year-old beauty queen’s tragic killing on Dec. 25, 1996.

Netflix describes the limited series as an exploration of “one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history, and the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the death of JonBenet Ramsey on Christmas night in 1996.”

Ed Sheeran just lost two more opening acts from his Loop Tour as a result of Macklemore’s controversial firing earlier this month.

Finneas, who was scheduled to perform on several dates of the South American leg of the tour between October and December, announced he was withdrawing from the gig today, Sept. 15.

“Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed,” he wrote in a message posted to Instagram, adding that he “stand[s] with Palestine and its people” as he revealed his decision to step away from the tour.

Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe did the same, withdrawing from the rest of his scheduled North American dates. “I cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up,” he wrote in part. “I would lose all respect for myself to carry on as normal.”

Macklemore was quickly dropped from the Loop Tour lineup after his first two nights as an opener earlier this month, performing at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Sept. 4 and 5.

During his set, the 43-year-old rapper made a public call to “Free Palestine” while performing “Hind’s Hall,” his 2024 track which calls out Israel for its actions in Gaza. He also displayed images of Gaza on the screens behind him.

The move sparked quite a bit of backlash, and he was later dropped from the tour after several other stadium owners, including Robert Kraft, informed Sheeran’s promoter that he was not welcome to “perform in his stadium.”

Macklemore’s response was relatively diplomatic, claiming that the move would not affect his friendship with the “Photograph” singer, while Sheeran later claimed that he had nothing to do with the move as Macklemore’s contract was “with the promoter, not me.”

Sheeran’s comments were disabled, but fans made their stance clear under Finneas’ statement, applauding his decision to “[stand] up for what’s right and [not be] motivated by greed or money.”

Fans also flooded Gillette Stadium’s replies on X while trying to promote other acts, calling for boycotts of the stadiums that refused to allow the tour to stage at their venues if Macklemore was still involved.

Ke Huy Quan is looking back at some fond memories from his childhood career as an actor in his new memoir, especially when Michael Jackson arrived on the set of The Goonies.

The actor is notable for more than a few roles on the big screen when he was young. One of them was the 1985 adventure comedy directed by Richard Donner. It starred Quan, Sean Aston, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, John Matuszak, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano, and Anne Ramsey. It also starred Josh Brolin in his first leading role.

In his memoir titled Never Say Die, Quan remembers being in awe of the ‘King of Pop’ when he suddenly appeared on set for a visit. Jackson was still very much an icon at the height of his career when The Goonies was being filmed and released. His presence on set was notable, according to Quan.

“One day the energy felt different,” the Oscar winner explains. “Seeing this Michael Jackson in person was something else entirely. It felt like someone had opened a door to another universe and he’d just walked through it by mistake.

Based on the Indiana Jones star’s recollection, Jackson must have visited the set while the cast was filming in the caves on their way to find One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. He recalls the singer stepping further into the cave and looking around shyly. It was something that struck Quan about him.

“That surprised me most: the gentleness. The soft voice. The way he seemed just as curious about our world as we were about his,” he said.

As Jackson took it all in, the Goonies stars jumped into fan mode, as Quan says, “And then all of us Goonies swarmed him at once, talking over each other, trying to get closer, asking questions nobody could hear the answers to. For a few minutes, it honestly felt like Michael Jackson had become an honorary Goonie, just hanging out on set to see what we were up to.”

Many may recall that Feldman, who played the role of Clark “Mouth” Devereaux in the film, had become close friends with Jackson in the 80s. They had met when he was 12 years old in 1983, before The Goonies, and later drifted apart in adulthood.

He was a longtime supporter of the pop star when he faced sexual assault allegations, and Feldman stated in 2024 that he stays away from speaking about the allegations. A victim of sexual assault himself, Feldman claimed he only had fond memories with Jackson.

Filming is back on, but more cast members are leaving. Now, Mayci Neeley and Layla Taylor have hinted that they could leave the show as well.

After Matthews shared her decision to step away, fans asked what other cast members had decided. Neeley shared that she was undecided in response, sharing “I am finishing this current season that we are filming and then not sure for after that.”

Just after this, the Baby Mama creator had created a TikTok about how her scenes had been cut from the fifth season. There was more focus on her postpartum story, including some postpartum depression that she struggled with, and how she used tennis as a way to heal. However, the scenes were cut for other storylines.

Taylor also responded to comments, making it clear that she loves Matthews. Right now, she’s not sure where she stands with future seasons, but she is currently working on the sixth season. She shared, “It’s such an impossible situation for everyone involved, but I am finishing season 6 and then tbd.”

This has led to comments from fans questioning whether the show can go on. So far, there are still other cast members not sharing their thoughts or plans. While it appears that Hulu has decided to keep Paul on the series, based on Matthews’ comments about not agreeing to giving certain behaviors a platform, the streamer hasn’t confirmed this.
