We Asked 4 Chefs Their Favorite Canned Soup, and Their Answers Will Inspire Dinner Tonight
Canned soup has a way of taking you straight back to childhood, one warm spoonful at a time. Maybe it’s the familiar pop of the lid, the steam rising from a bowl five minutes later, or the fact that it has rescued countless lunches, sick days and last-minute dinners. Canned soup has earned its reputation as the ultimate pantry safety net—and while microwaving a can and calling it dinner is perfectly legitimate, that’s hardly where its culinary potential ends.
Think of canned soup as a shortcut rather than a finished product. A can of tomato soup can become the starting point for pasta sauce, shakshuka or a quick braise. Lentil soup brings vegetables, protein and fiber to the table with virtually no chopping required. Cream soups can provide instant body and savory depth to casseroles, sauces and pot pies. Even French onion soup has tricks up its sleeve, particularly when you need a fast boost for a stew or gravy.

The secret is knowing which soups are sturdy enough to stand on their own and which ones are better used as building blocks. Professional chefs also know that a few small additions—fresh herbs, lemon juice, good olive oil, toasted spices or something crunchy—can make a humble can of soup taste considerably less canned.
So, we asked four chefs and culinary experts to reveal their favorite canned soups, what they look for on the label and the tricks they use to make canned soup taste homemade. Their answers may change the way you look at that shelf-stable can hiding in your pantry.
The Big Reveal: Chef-Favorite Canned SoupsIf there was one clear theme in our interviews, it was that chefs aren’t necessarily looking for the fanciest soup on the grocery store shelf. They’re looking for flavor, texture, useful ingredients and versatility.
Chef and food industry executive Jaimi St. John gravitates toward well-made lentil vegetable soup. For her, the appeal is that a good version delivers the comfort and convenience expected from canned soup without giving up texture or recognizable ingredients.
“The best versions have distinct vegetables, lentils that retain their shape, a savory broth, and enough acidity and seasoning to keep the flavor from tasting flat or overly processed,” St. John says.
Marisa Moore, cookbook author and culinary dietitian, also puts canned lentil soup at the top of her pantry list. She likes it as an easy way to get vegetables, plant protein and fiber into a meal.
Melanie Underwood is even more specific, naming the lower sodium version of Amy’s Organic Lentil Vegetable as her favorite. She says it tastes homemade enough to eat straight from the can and appreciates that the lentils and vegetables maintain their texture.
Then there’s Liz Della Croce, creator of The Lemon Bowl, who is firmly Team Tomato. “Canned tomato soup, hands down,” Della Croce says. “It’s the one thing in my pantry that never lets me down.” She particularly loves Pacific and Whole Foods’ store brand.
For Della Croce, tomato soup’s concentrated flavor makes it an ideal blank canvas. Instead of trying to disguise the canned soup, she builds on what is already there with aromatics, texture and bright finishing ingredients.
The takeaway is clear. Lentil soup gets serious chef love for nutrition and substance, while tomato soup wins points for sheer versatility. And both are considerably more useful than simply pouring them into a bowl and reaching for a spoon.

The Sodium Problem: What Chefs Look for on the LabelSoup can be an easy source of vegetables, protein and other nourishing ingredients, but some varieties can also pack a significant amount of sodium. That’s why the chefs we spoke with pay close attention to the nutrition facts panel and ingredient list.
Underwood says she always checks the nutrition label when buying canned soups, stocks and broths, specifically because sodium can be high. Her advice is straightforward: look for a low-sodium canned soup when possible. She also checks the ingredient list for fillers, gums, stabilizers and added sugars.
Della Croce takes a similar approach. She looks for relatively short ingredient lists, real vegetables near the top and a sodium level that leaves her room to season the finished dish herself. She also watches for added sugar.
St. John takes a slightly broader view. She isn’t necessarily searching for the shortest possible ingredient list. Instead, she wants recognizable ingredients, meaningful protein or fiber and a sodium level that works with the rest of the meal.
Moore puts it simply: she wants the ingredient list to resemble something she might use in her own kitchen.
In other words, there isn’t necessarily one magic definition of the healthiest canned soup. Instead, read the label, consider the soup’s nutrition as part of the entire meal and choose a product that fits your needs.
5 Chef Tricks to Make Canned Soup Taste Totally HomemadeOur panel of experts share the sentiment that there are a few ingredients that can easily elevate canned soup and make it taste homemade. Place these tricks in your back pocket for the next time you heat up a can, and you won’t regret it.
1. Start with aromatics.Della Croce has one non-negotiable move—sauté garlic and onion in olive oil before adding the soup, even if both are listed as ingredients. Those few minutes of cooking help develop a deeper flavor base before the canned soup enters the picture.
Other aromatic options include shallot, leek, carrot, celery, scallion and ginger, depending on the soup’s flavor profile.
2. Finish with acid.A little acidity can be remarkably effective when soup tastes flat.
Moore likes a squeeze of fresh lemon, particularly with lentil, white bean and chicken noodle soups. Della Croce also finishes tomato soup with lemon juice to brighten the flavor. Another option is a dash of balsamic vinegar before serving.
Underwood’s favorite acidic addition is sherry vinegar, although lemon juice works too.
The trick is to add acid gradually and taste as you go. You’re looking for brightness, not a bowl of vinegar soup.
3. Up the ante with fat and creaminess. If a soup needs more richness, Underwood suggests adding a little cream or coconut milk.
This technique can transform the character of a soup. Coconut milk, for example, can take a basic tomato or vegetable soup in a completely different direction when paired with curry spices or roasted peppers.
And if you’re trying to make canned soup feel restaurant-worthy, a drizzle of quality extra-virgin olive oil can go a surprisingly long way.
4. Give it some crunch.Texture is one of the biggest differences between soup that tastes freshly made and soup that’s been sitting in a can.
Moore recommends fresh herbs or toasted nuts. Della Croce is a fan of roasting the vegetables first to offer more texture and a caramelized flavor, then she might add za’atar or sumac for additional complexity.
St. John takes a similar “contrast is king” approach. She recommends adding something fresh, something acidic and something with texture to bring it all together. That could mean fresh herbs, lemon juice, cracked pepper, chili crisp, grated cheese or toasted breadcrumbs.
5. Taste before you ‘fix’ anything.Underwood suggests perhaps the most important rule—taste the soup first. If it isn’t delicious to you, ask yourself what it’s missing. Does it need more flavor? Creamy richness? Brightness with something acidic? Spice or heat? Fresh herbs?
If the flavor is weak, she recommends gently simmering the soup to reduce some of its water and concentrate the flavors. The same principle works particularly well with canned stock or broth.
And don’t underestimate presentation. Underwood points to toppings such as crème fraîche, sour cream, pesto, gremolata or spiced seeds as ways to add both visual appeal and flavor.
Because yes, we eat with our eyes…even when dinner started life in a can.

The Best Canned Soup for Cooking and CasserolesSiriporn Supmool / Getty Images
When it comes to cooking with canned soup rather than simply eating it, there’s one category that repeatedly came up—cream soups.
St. John calls cream of mushroom one of the most useful cooking soups because it delivers seasoning, body, fat and savory depth in one convenient ingredient. She says it can form the foundation for pan sauces, pot pies, stroganoff-style dishes, braises and creamy vegetable preparations.
Della Croce agrees, calling cream of mushroom a “workhorse.” Its earthy flavor can stand up to other ingredients, while its creamy consistency helps thicken sauces and casseroles.
But Underwood makes a compelling case for an underdog—cream of celery.
She considers it one of the most versatile canned soups because celery’s relatively neutral savory flavor works with chicken, turkey, seafood, potatoes, rice casseroles and sauces. Cream of mushroom and cream of chicken may be the classic casserole choices, but cream of celery can sneak into a much wider range of dishes.
Underwood also has plenty of ideas for other varieties. Tomato soup can become pasta sauce, shortcut vodka sauce, stuffed-pepper filling or the base for tomato-heavy casseroles. French onion soup can add depth to pot roast, gravy, braised short ribs and meatballs. Cheddar or butternut squash soup can help create creamy vegetable dishes, mac and cheese, or queso-style dips. Bean soups can be reduced and used in enchiladas, tacos, burritos, bowls or chili.
And Moore has her own clever use for tomato basil soup: she turns it into a base for lasagna soup.
Final ThoughtsTaras Grebinets / Getty Images
Ultimately, the best pantry staple soups aren’t necessarily the ones that demand to be eaten straight from the can. They’re the ones that give you options.
A can of lentil soup can be dinner. Tomato soup can become sauce. Cream of celery can quietly hold an entire casserole together. And with a little lemon, olive oil, fresh herbs and crunch, even the most humble pantry standby can feel like something you actually meant to cook.
That might be the real appeal of canned soup—it’s not the end of the meal. It’s a shortcut to something delicious.

Dennis Franz, 81, Makes Rare Appearance 21 Years After ‘NYPD Blue’ Came to an End
Dennis Franz was a king of ’90s TV as Detective Sipowicz on NYPD Blue, and he just made a rare public appearance.
Franz, 81, is best known for his role as the tough-talking Sipowicz on the hit television series, which ran from 1993 to 2005. Before that, he was a regular on Hill Street Blues. After wrapping up 261 episodes of NYPD Blue, the star has been enjoying a quieter life away from the spotlight in retirement. The Daily Mail just caught him out and about running errands, and we were thrilled to see the iconic actor enjoying his retirement. While his hair may be fully white these days, we can never forget Franz in the role of Sipowicz!

Why Did Dennis Franz Retire After NYPD Blue? When the hit show concluded in 2005, Franz was ready for a serious break. In a 2023 interview with the New York Post, he opened up about giving himself time to relax after the legendary run, which earned him a bevy of awards.
“I was just tired. It was becoming a job, as much as I loved the work and the challenges and the creative process. At one point, in about the ninth season, I told [series creator] Steven Bochco that if we made it to Season 12, that’s a good number. When we finished up, I told my agents I needed a year off, and that year went by in about 10 minutes. I realized I’m pretty good at this, and I’d like another year to think about what’s next — and during that second period of time, I sort of made up my mind that this is where I wanna be. I just wanted to live an enjoyable, irresponsible, spend-time-with-my-family kind of life. I haven’t regretted one minute of it. I’m pretty good at doing nothing,” he shared.
Franz noted that while he misses the creative process of acting, he gets a lot of satisfaction watching good TV be made too.

'Harry Potter' Star Timothy Spall's Son Cast in Season 2 of the HBO Series as a Beloved Character
The Harry Potter franchise has become a family affair for actor Timothy Spall, as his son, Rafe Spall, was announced to join Season 2 of the HBO series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
According to Variety, HBO announced that Rafe will play the well-loved role of Arthur Weasley for the second season of the network’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The role was famously played by Mark Williams from the very beginning, starting with 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets up until 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Die-hard fans know that Rafe’s role will be as the Weasley patriarch and a fatherly figure to Ron Weasley’s (Rupert Grint) best friend, Harry. Rafe’s role was announced alongside two more additions to Season 2 of the series, with Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle and Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey. Hewitt-Richards’ role was originally played by Shirley Henderson in the original second installment film, alongside Hugh Mitchel as Creevey.
Rafe is following in his father’s footsteps, who played the role of Peter Pettigrew in the film series. Spall’s role was as Voldemort’s loyal servant, and he appears in human form for the first time in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He played the role until the character’s supposed death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
Neither Spall nor his son has made an official statement on the new role for the HBO series. Further details about playing Arthur Weasley have also not been revealed, nor has it been revealed who will play the role of Pettigrew in future seasons.
Spall did give some advice to the actor who will play his famed role in the series. He explained to People that Pettigrew is “indicative of quite a lot of evil in general,” and that “all actors have to make the part their own.”
“I would say there is something very complex about somebody that is that evil and also kind of vulnerable at the same time. That’s what I liked about him,” he explained.
When it comes to his son, Rafe, the actor began his career in the early 2000s. He has frequently collaborated with Edgar Wright and appeared in some of his biggest cult classic films, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. He also starred opposite Anne Hathaway in One Day, in the Oscar-winning film Life of Pi, and in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Rafe has also had main roles in The English, Smoke, and currently stars in Trying. He’s also scheduled to star in The Death of Sherlock Holmes.

'American Idol' Makes Major Move for 1st Time in 24 Years
American Idol is saying goodbye to Hollywood Week—sort of.
Idol — which is preparing to kick off its milestone 25th season — is reportedly moving production from California to Georgia, Deadline reported on Tuesday, September 15.
“We hear that Fremantle is in final talks with a studio complex in the area but that it has not signed the deal,” the outlet reported, adding that Fremantle confirmed the news of the move.
Georgia has been a huge draw to film and television productions over the last five years as the state offers up to a 30 percent tax credit for most unscripted and reality television productions.
Idol‘s move marks a major shift in the show’s history, as the series that launched the careers of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and dozens of others, continues to evolve in an effort to draw viewers.
Last season, the show — hosted by Ryan Seacrest — tested social voting, streamed live on Disney+, moved Hollywood Week to Nashville, Tennessee, and swapped its premiere night from Sunday to Monday.
According to Deadline, judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood are expected to return for season 25.
Legendary West Coast Hip Hop Producer Whose Work Appeared in Jordan Peele Project Dies at 59
Tone Capone, legendary Bay Area producer behind the hip-hop classic “I Got 5 on It” has died. Complez reports he was 59 at the time of his passing.
Born Anthony Douglas Gilmour, he produced the Luniz duo’s Michael Marshall-featuring 1995 single for their debut album. The single peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100. The song has been featured in popular projects throughout the years, including Jordan Peele’s Us.
While it may be his most notable single he worked on, he has an impressive catalog. Capone also worked with other Bay Area staples such as E-40, Messy Marv, Dru Down, the late Mac Dre, and others. His session work includes time with the likes of Devin the Dude and Scarface, the latter of whom he worked on much of his 1997 album The Untouchable, which opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and was quickly certified Platinum by the RIAA.
KQED shared that Capone’s family reported he died on Saturday (Sept. 12). The cause of death is currently unknown.
While attending Berkeley High School, Capone’s love for music blossomed. He learned how to DJ using a friend’s turntables and became the hot DJ around town for different parties at fraternity houses or at the Lake Merritt boathouse with friend Nick Peace, who would become a notable hip-hop producer himself. Some of Capone’s earliest work was commissioned by major labels for the Oakland group Capital Tax and R&B trio SWV before he became synonymous with hip-hop.
In recent years, Capone stayed active in the industry, expanding his skill set by trying new tempos and musical styles. Before his death, he had recently worked with the Punjabi rapper Kanwar, and he also took a day job, working at a hospital, before retiring. At this time, no public memorial plans have been announced.
1972 Soft Rock Song, Recorded in New York City, Became a Breakup Hit
Fifty-four years ago, soft-rocker Todd Rundgren released “Hello It’s Me,” a song that became a national hit and launched him into solo stardom.
“Hello It’s Me” was originally released in February 1972 as a track from his third studio album Something/Anything? After gaining significant traction from the record, the song was issued as a single in September 1973. By October 6, it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 97, peaking at No. 5 on December 22. In total, the song spent 20 consecutive weeks on the tally.
The single not only dominated the Hot 100, but it also experienced massive commercial success. Since its release, the track has sold over 1 million copies, helping its parent album earn a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Todd Rundgren posed at a studio mixing desk in New York in 1974.Written by Rundgren, “Hello It’s Me” was first recorded in 1968 by his garage-rock band Nazz. While trying to fill space on the fourth side of his solo double album, the singer decided to rework the old tune.
Rundgren recorded the new rendition at the Record Plant in New York City. Serving as his own producer and engineer for the project, he transformed the original track from a slow ballad into a mid-tempo, soulful soft-rock anthem. The single drew inspiration from the popular soft-rock sound of the era, adding breezy pop vocal harmonies and warm electric piano to create a captivating atmosphere.
“Hello It’s Me” functions as a quintessential breakup anthem. The song tells the story of a man attempting to end a relationship over the phone. Throughout the track, the narrator struggles with the internal dilemma of not wanting to hurt his partner while knowing he needs to walk away.
Rundgren was inspired to pen the song after a gut-wrenching breakup he experienced at 19. His girlfriend at the time, named Linda, was forbidden from seeing him by her disapproving father. To deal with the heartbreak, the singer wrote a song from the perspective of the one forced to leave.
“One day in May ’66, a friend dropped us off and I walked Linda to her front door,” Rundgren reflected in an interview. “Her father, who was outside, hated me on sight. He turned the garden hose on me. Long hair on a guy was a political statement back then and a red flag for parents. A day or two later, Linda told me she was forbidden to see me anymore. Just like that, she stopped talking to me and wouldn’t take my calls. I adored her and was heartbroken, almost suicidal.”
Over five decades since its release, “Hello It’s Me” remains a beloved track. In the digital era, the song has persevered, bridging the gap between generations on Spotify, where it has accumulated over 79 million streams.

Mariska Hargitay and Daughter, 15, Channel Jayne Mansfield in Matching Fiery Red Looks at the 2026 Emmys
The 2026 Emmys were full of jaw-dropping fashion moments, with actor and host Mariska Hargitay making it a family affair honoring her late mother, Jayne Mansfield, in matching ensembles.
The Law & Order: SVU actor walked the red carpet alongside her husband, Peter Hermann, and their three children: August, 20, Andrew, 14, and Amaya, 15. The host turned heads in a sequined, bright red Monse gown with a feathered train and matching red platform heels.
That wasn’t all, as Hargitay posed with her daughter Amaya, who was wearing a matching gown with a shorter length and spaghetti straps. She paired the look with patent red pointed heels, and both mother and daughter opted for minimal jewelry.
Harigtay decided to make her Emmy hosting night a real family affair in a special way. Page Six confirmed with Monse that the actor and her daughter’s red gowns were in honor of her silver-screen icon mother.
Mansfield was an actor, Playboy Playmate, and singer who became one of the legendary sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s. As an actor, she starred in the leading role in the 1956 musical comedy The Girl Can’t Help It. Directed by Frank Tashlin, she starred alongside Tom Ewell, Edmond O’Brien, Henry Jones, and Julie Londo.
The film focused on hoodlum Marty Fats Murdock (O’Brien) hiring a has-been agent named Tom Miller (Ewell) to turn his stunning girlfriend Jerri Jordan (Mansfield) into a singing star. As he helps Jerri, he begins to realize she’s not cut out to be a singer, isn’t in love with Murdock, and wants a simple man to be with.
The Girl Can’t Help It became one of Mansfield’s most well-known roles and a popular film that celebrated rock music.
Hargitay and her daughter’s red dress pays homage to one of the looks Mansfield wore in the film. During a scene, the actor appears wearing a strapless, ruby-red, sequined, floor-length dress. She wore a matching clutch and heels.
The Emmys weren’t the first time the Law & Order: SVU star has mimicked her mother’s look. For Interview magazine in 2023, she recreated her mother’s iconic leopard-print look. She told the outlet that she is “always looking for signs that she’s with me.”
Mansfield died on June 29, 1967, at the age of 34. She was killed in a car crash near Slidell, Louisiana, while she was travelling from Mississippi to New Orleans. Hargitay was 3 years old at the time and was in the car with her two siblings when it crashed into a tractor-trailer.
Hargitay was nominated at the Emmys for her documentary about her famous mother, My Mom Jayne: A Film By Mariska Hargitay. She won for directing a documentary/nonfiction program and for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special.

Gladys Knight's Son Raises Further Alarm Over Mother's Health Amid Tour Concerns
Gladys Knight’s son has been speaking out of concern for his mother. Amid the icon’s latest tour, some concertgoers have expressed concern about her ability to perform, with videos circulating of her seemingly being unable to get through the setlist without having the audience assisting her in singing. According to her son, the “Midnight Train to Georgia” singer’s health may be in jeopardy.
In a recent post shared to her Instagram, Knight announced she’ll be taking a step back from touring after completing her upcoming shows. “After heartfelt discussions with my team, I recognize that no matter how much I love lifting spirits in song, it’s time for the midnight train to make just a few more stops. I’m finishing the year strong with my remaining performances. Looking forward to new ventures next year. Again, I am so very grateful for all the love and support over the years. God bless all of you,” the statement read.
This is her second statement regarding the tour, following her son speaking publicly about feeling his mother is being forced to perform by her husband/manager, William McDowell. Her son has accused his stepfather of abuse.
Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson told the Detroit News that he worries about his mother and accuses McDowell of taking advantage of her. “My belief and fear is that he intends to literally try to work her until she passes away. And you can quote me on that,” he told the outlet. Knight previously denied her son’s claims. They’ve had a difficult relationship at times, with her suing her son and them settling outside of court over her name and likeness linked to her now-closed Georgia eatery, Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles.
In a previous social media post, Knight said she’ll be spending more time performing local shows near her home/region and spending time with her grandchildren. Knight’s husband and manager also told media outlets that he will ensure she’s seen by a doctor once the next three tour stops are complete.
Knight is 82-years-old. Shanga is one of three of her children. Knight has been performing since the early 1950s, initially beginning with her brothers in a group.

Lacey Chabert's Nerve-Wracking 'Mean Girls' Audition Became an Iconic Scene in the 2004 Cult Classic (Exclusive)
When Lacey Chabert was asked to audition for Mean Girls over two decades ago, she was best known for playing nice girls, from sweet and sensitive tween Claudia Salinger on the hit drama Party of Five to spunky Eliza in the beloved animated series The Wild Thornberrys. Could the ultimate nice girl be convincing as wealthy, high school gossip queen Gretchen Wieners? Chabert wasn’t exactly confident she’d get the role.
“Oh, I remember the audition,” Chabert recently told Parade of what would become a life-changing role. “Marcy Leiroff, a wonderful casting director, saw me for the part. I read the script, I thought it was amazing and obviously so funny — I mean, written by Tina Fey!”
Chabert continued, “The character description, I don’t remember exactly what it said, but I was like, ‘I don’t know if that fits me, but I’ll just go in and do my take on it.’ And, as with every audition, you never know when you walk out the door if you’ll hear another word. Lo and behold, I did!”
The script that Chabert read for her audition wound up becoming one of the 2004 movie’s most iconic scenes, when Gretchen flips out during an English class presentation, comparing Regina George — queen bee of The Plastics, whose strict rules for membership include wearing pink on Wednesdays — to Julius Caesar. Sick of Regina ruling the roost, Gretchen maniacally declares to her wide-eyed peers, “We should totally just stab Caesar!”
Now, in a cheeky ode to the cult classic, Chabert has reimagined that scene 22 years later in funny promos for Cesar dog food’s limited-edition “Pink Packs,” available to order online the next two Wednesdays (September 16 and 23), while supplies last. This time around, Chabert delivers her frantic speech (while wearing pink, of course) to three adorable pups, and declares, “Dogs should totally just eat Cesar!”
View this post on InstagramWhen Mean Girls premiered, Chabert had three pups of her own — chihuahuas named Teacup, Teaspoon, and Kitty. She told Parade that’s one of the reasons she jumped at the chance to read that scene once more for “a very dog-approved spin on one of my most iconic roles,” calling the trip down memory lane “such a blast.”
“It was such a blessing to be a part of,” she said of the movie, co-starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Jonathan Bennett. “I just remember being on set and making each other laugh all day long.”
Chabert, who’s since starred in over 40 Hallmark movies, recalled, “Like, the hardest part about it was not laughing when we were, you know, in the middle of a scene and not meant to break. And then to have it be something that people have enjoyed all of these years? It’s such a treat. You know, it’s brought a lot of joy to my life, too.”
Tyler Perry Reveals Why His Movies Made Him Avoid Marriage Despite Long-Term Relationships
Tyler Perry has it all: the fame, fortune, and a close circle of family and friends. Despite having long-term relationships and even a son, as well as promoting marriages in his projects, he’s never been married. And he says don’t expect him to say “I Do.”
Perry is currently on the media circuit promoting his latest film Why Did I Get Married Again? The film is the third installment of the franchise and follows the original couples from the 2007 film Why Did I Get Married who reunite for the destination wedding of Marcus and Angela’s daughter, Jasmine, who is marrying Wesley. Secrets are uncovered along the way at the destination wedding in Italy, forcing the parents and adult kids to face hard truths.
Speaking in an in-depth interview with Today, Perry says he initially considered marriage earlier in his career. “When I wrote the first one, I thought, ‘You know, marriage might be a good idea at some point.’ But at this age, that’s not a good idea for me. So, no, there won’t be any marriage for me. But having the understanding of being able to take these characters on that journey has been really fulfilling for me to watch.”
When asked whether he scared himself out of marriage, Perry answered honestly. “By watching my own movie,” he agreed.
In a separate interview with Jennifer Hudson, Perry doubled down on his decision to not get married, and he says it’s all about protecting his billionaire status. According to reports, Perry is worth an estimated $1.4 billion.
“It’s not the marriage that bothers me, it’s the divorce,” he explained. Everybody that I know, that did well, and went broke, it was because of a divorce. So, I’m good just being free,” he insists. He even joked he’ll make a movie titled Why Did I Never Get Married.
Sally Field Shares How She Kept Her Composure During Dolly Parton Tribute at 2026 Emmys
Sally Field revealed she struggled to keep her composure during her tribute to the late Dolly Parton at the 2026 Emmy Awards on Monday.
Recounting the heartwrenching tribute with press after she took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in Netflix’s film Remarkably Bright Creatures, she got to talking about the honoring of Parton earlier in the night and spoke about her longtime relationship with the iconic country singer.
“As an actor, you spend a whole lot of time, especially me, trying to make yourself cry,” she said. “And I was trying to make myself not cry, so it was hard.”
Field, 79, who starred in 1989’s Steel Magnolias along with Parton, who died in August, went on to gush about their working experience together.
“She was a friend. I admired her. I loved working with her. I never stopped loving her,” she said to a group of reporters.
“This acting world where you where you do films and you’re so bonded with this group of people … ” she continued, “It’s like being in battle together, it’s like being in Battle of the Bulge together, and you save each other’s lives, and you’ve got each other’s backs, and you spend 24/7 with each other … and it never leaves your soul.”
However, the Mrs. Doubtfire icon went on to admit that in the years since the film she and Parton weren’t always in touch due to living far away from each other.
“Dolly and I live so far apart, we could never make it ends meet, we could never find a way,” she said. “But I never stopped feeling that way about her. And the times we did reach out, I think she felt that way about me. So I loved her.”
Related: Sally Field’s Heartbreaking Dolly Parton Tribute: ‘We Have Just Lost an Angel’
In her on-stage tribute, which also included a performance from Reba McEntire, Field shared a similar sentiment of Parton.
“If there are truly angels on Earth, we have just lost one,” she said. “Over the years, I never stopped loving her, though we lived very far apart.”
“I adored her from Day 1,” she continued. “How could you not?! She was genuine and humble, supportive, and blisteringly funny, with a bawdy sense of humor that would send any rude guy looking for a place to hide.”
McEntire sang a reimagined version of Parton’s song “Appalachian Memories” as part of the tribute.

Long-Awaited 'Princess Bride' Musical Sets Opening Date for 2027
After years of active development, The Princess Bride stage musical is officially set to premiere in Chicago in 2027.
According to Playbill, The Princess Bride‘s long-planned stage adaptation will play at Chicago’s Nederlander Theatre from July 19 to August 22 next year. If so successful, it’s safe to assume the play will eventually find its way to the Great White Way of Broadway somewhere down the line.
The creative team behind the project includes the Academy Award-winning composers of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen), with a book by Tony winner Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatcher).
Overseeing the show’s direction is Tony winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!), with choreography by Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton).
Referring to the project, lead producer Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton) said, “I read The Princess Bride in college and thought it could be a musical … So it’s no exaggeration to say I have been wanting to do this show for 40 years.”
As of yet, casting for the show has not been announced.
Based on the fantasy novel of the same name by William Goldman, The Princess Bride tells the unlikely love story between a farm boy-turned-seafaring pirate and a fair princess named Buttercup. Mixing comedy, romance, adventure and fantasy together into one overstuffed package, the book has won a consistently positive response since its initial release in 1973.
Over a decade later, the book gained renewed exposure thanks to a wildly successful adaptation by Rob Reiner. Starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant, Wallace Shawn, and Billy Crystal, the 1987 film remains a beloved classic of modern film, as well as one of the most popular movies ever directed by Reiner.
Over the years, several attempts to adapt The Princess Bride into a musical have come and gone, including an attempt in 2006 by Goldman and Light in the Piazza composer Adam Guettel.
