1970 Beach Boys Hit Written by Dennis Wilson Crowned a 'Classic' Love Song
When music lovers think of the Beach Boys, Dennis Wilson’s brilliant songwriting is often at the top of the list.
His 1970 hit “Forever” from the LP Sunflower captured a tender, soulful side of the band that fans instantly fell in love with. Decades later, the gorgeous love song remains one of the most emotional and unforgettable tracks in the group’s entire catalog.
That special magic got a fresh spotlight when the band shared a sweet tribute to the track on their official Instagram page. Remembering Wilson’s incredible talent, the band honored the 1970 favorite in a new update, calling it a true “classic” love song that still touches hearts today.
The caption was attached to a video clip of the Beach Boys performing the song during a September 1977 performance at New York’s Central Park. The caption read, “Forever a classic. ‘Forever’ performed live from Central Park. Dennis injured his hand and was not able to play drums, so he made a rare appearance playing keys.”

The song was a highlight of a set The New York Times called “a bit of California Dreamin” right at the Big Apple’s heart. The now-defunct radio station WNEW-FM sponsored the concert as part of its annual free summer rock concert series.
“New York has been very good to us,” Carl Wilson told the crowd. “The honor is ours.”
The band lineup featured Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, alongside Mike Love and Al Jardine. According to local reporting, the core group was joined on stage by 12 additional musicians for the performance.
“Forever” was written by Dennis Wilson and his close friend Gregg Jakobson. Dennis’ brother, Brian, applauded the song for its beauty, giving it the ultimate compliment.
He said, as reprinted by the site Don’t Forget the Songs, “Forever” has to be the most harmonically beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. It’s a rock and roll prayer.”
Fans completely agreed in the comment section, flooding the post with love for the 1970 track. Many called it Dennis Wilson’s finest moment and agreed the tribute was long overdue.
“A personal Top 3 all time Beach Boys song for me. I hope Dennis was as proud as he should’ve been,” wrote one follower.
A second fan penned, “One of the greatest love songs ever written!!” In the comments, a third fan exclaimed, “This is the best live performance by the beach boys ever (imo).”
“One of my top songs EVER! My son surprised me and sang it to me for my birthday a few years ago. I told him he never has to give me another gift ever!” a fourth fan concluded.
Decades after its release, “Forever” remains a testament to Dennis Wilson’s timeless impact on The Beach Boys’ legacy. As fans continue to celebrate the 1970 hit, the tender track stands as a lasting reminder of his unique musical gift.

'80s Rock Legend, Who Wrote No. 1 Hit ‘Sister Christian’ About His Little Sister, Turns 74
In 1984, Night Ranger scored the biggest hit of its career with the power ballad “Sister Christian,” a song written and sung by drummer Kelly Keagy. More than four decades later, Keagy celebrates another milestone as he turns 74 on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Born Sept. 15, 1952, Keagy left home the day after graduating from high school to pursue a career as a full-time drummer. After years on the club circuit, he became the touring drummer for Rubicon, where he played alongside future Night Ranger bandmates Jack Blades and Brad Gillis.
Night Ranger eventually became one of the biggest hard rock bands of the 1980s, selling 17 million albums. But it was “Sister Christian,” from the band’s 1983 album Midnight Madness, that became its signature song. The single reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 in Canada.
The inspiration came from Keagy’s little sister Christy Keagy, who was 10 years younger.
After returning to San Francisco from a visit to his hometown in Oregon, Keagy was struck by how quickly his teenage sister was growing up and wrote the song in his apartment. But “Sister Christian” wasn’t actually what he originally called her.
Keagy told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was singing “Sister Christy” until Blades finally asked what he was saying. Blades thought he was singing “Sister Christian,” “so it just stuck.” Keagy added that Christy was so embarrassed when the song became a hit that she nearly changed her name.
The song’s success transformed Night Ranger’s career. After the “Sister Christian” video became an MTV favorite, the band went from playing smaller venues to arenas, while Midnight Madness became its top-selling album.
Keagy also sang lead on Night Ranger favorites including “Sing Me Away” and the Top 10 hit “Sentimental Street.” He remains one of the band’s two constant members, alongside Gillis, more than four decades after their earliest days together.
And all these years later, the song most closely associated with Keagy began simply as a big brother watching his little sister grow up.
‘Men in Black’ Legend, Who Once Told Jim Carrey He 'Hated' Him, Turns 80 Today
Tommy Lee Jones turns 80 on Tuesday, Sept. 15, after spending more than five decades delivering some of Hollywood’s most memorable performances.
Yet one of the Oscar winner’s most unforgettable lines was reportedly delivered off camera—and directed at Jim Carrey.
Jones and Carrey played Two-Face and the Riddler, respectively, in 1995’s Batman Forever. Years later, Carrey recalled encountering his costar at a restaurant before they were scheduled to film a major scene together.
Warner Bros.
“I walked into a restaurant the night before our big scene in the Riddler’s lair,” Carrey said during an appearance on Norm Macdonald Live. “I went up to say ‘hi,’ and the blood drained from his face.”
According to Carrey, Jones stood up, embraced him and said, “I hate you. I really don’t like you.”
When Carrey asked what the problem was, Jones reportedly delivered an unexpectedly formal response: “I cannot sanction your buffoonery.”
(Carrey later theorized that Jones was upset because his serious Ty Cobb biopic, Cobb, struggled after opening the same weekend as Carrey’s blockbuster comedy Dumb and Dumber. “Cobb was his big swing for the fences, and that didn’t work out,” Carrey said, per The Hollywood Reporter in a 2017 report.)
Before going on to become one of Hollywood’s legends, Jones starred in two episodes of One Life to Live as Dr. Mark Toland in the 1970s.Despite the confrontation, Carrey called Jones “a phenomenal actor.” Director Joel Schumacher later confirmed that the costars experienced tension, saying Jones “was not kind to Jim.”
Jones had already won an Academy Award for playing Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard in 1993’s The Fugitive. Two years after facing Carrey’s Riddler, he found another blockbuster partner in Will Smith, playing the unflappable Agent K in 1997’s Men in Black.
His extensive résumé also includes Coal Miner’s Daughter, Lonesome Dove, JFK, No Country for Old Men, Lincoln and Captain America: The First Avenger.
Before Hollywood, Jones attended Harvard, played offensive guard on its football team and roomed with future Vice President Al Gore. He graduated in 1969 and made his Broadway debut later that year.
More than half a century later, Jones remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading men.
Six Flags Just Swept All Four Top Spots for Best New Roller Coaster
If your idea of a good vacation involves being launched through the air at questionable speeds, Six Flags has four new reasons to start planning your next theme park trip.
The company just pulled off a massive clean sweep at the 2026 Golden Ticket Awards, claiming all four top spots in the Best New Roller Coaster category. Presented annually by Amusement Today, the Golden Ticket Awards are among the amusement industry’s most respected honors, recognizing the best parks, rides, attractions and entertainment around the world.
And this wasn’t a case of one park location dominating the podium. Six Flags’ four winning coasters stretch from Texas and Massachusetts all the way to Saudi Arabia—in case you’re willing to cash in your frequent flyer miles for a white-knuckle thrill.

Six Flags Has the Four Best New Roller Coasters of 2026Taking the No. 1 spot is Falcons Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia. The coaster also earned the Golden Ticket for Best New Attraction Installation, making it one of the biggest winners of the awards.
And “big” is putting it mildly. Falcons Flight has been billed by Six Flags Qiddiya City as the world’s tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster, sending riders soaring above the surrounding landscape on a ride designed to mimic the flight of a falcon. Translation: This is not your childhood theme park coaster.
Coming in at No. 2 is Tormenta: Rampaging Run at Six Flags Over Texas. The record-breaking dive coaster brings its own brand of Texas-sized thrills, including a beyond-vertical 95-degree drop. It’s also a much easier pilgrimage for U.S.-based coaster enthusiasts who aren’t quite ready to book a flight halfway around the world for their next adrenaline fix.
The No. 3 spot went to Quantum Accelerator at Six Flags New England in Massachusetts. The park’s first dual-launch straddle coaster puts riders in motorcycle-style seats and sends them racing through multiple launches, twists and turns. It’s also a major new addition for New England thrill-seekers, giving the park another marquee coaster alongside longtime favorites.
Rounding out the sweep at No. 4 is Colossus, also at Six Flags Qiddiya City. That means the newly opened Saudi Arabian park managed to land two rides among the four best new coasters in the world in the same year.
Might be time to add the high-flying destination to your international bucket list?

Psychology Says There’s a Reason Why Compliments Often Make Us Uncomfortable
Has anyone ever given you a compliment and you’ve reacted by squirming, laughing, deflecting, making a joke, panicking or maybe some form of all of the above? While some people seem to effortlessly receive positive feedback, thanking the other person for their kind words and moving on, other individuals feel instantly uncomfortable when they experience similar praise. So, what gives?
Dr. Marisa G. Franco, psychologist, professor, speaker and New York Times best-selling author, has plenty of insights into this phenomenon, as she often delivers talks on connection, belonging and worth—and she explains that automatically brushing off compliments has more to do with self-worth than you might think.
“When people with low self-esteem receive compliments, they’re more likely to deflect and devalue them,” Dr. Franco, whose new book Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment was just released on September 15, tells Parade.
She adds, “Research finds that when they receive positive feedback, their blood pressure actually increases. When they can decide to interact with someone that perceives them more negatively or positively, they report wanting to affiliate with the person that sees them more negatively.”
This impacts so many people, and it’s not always obvious to those around them.
“If you have low self-esteem, you can be a great success and still feel like a failure,” Dr. Franco explains. “You can find great love in your life and still feel unlovable, because unworthiness manifests as an inability to accept love.”
Here, she reveals more about what psychology says about low self-worth and feeling awkward or uncomfortable with compliments. Plus, what a “healthy” response to flattery and praise actually looks like.
Related: If You Heard These 12 Phrases Growing Up, Psychologists Say You May Still Struggle With Self-Worth
The Impact of Insecurity and Low Self-Worth“If you have low self-worth, your reaction to good things, success and even love in your life is that you feel threatened,” Dr. Franco tells Parade. “You feel as if it’s only a matter of time until this good thing gets taken away, and so you’re on high-alert and anxious.”
Part of the fear of the good thing being taken away is from the belief that you aren’t deserving of it, or you will ruin it somehow.
“If someone sees you too positively, you think it’s only a matter of time until you let them down, and so there’s this anxiety that can come with experiencing the beauties of life if you struggle with self worth,” the psychologist explains.
That’s why it’s so important to address these underlying feelings.
“Ultimately, the work of self-worth is to finally be able to receive everything beautiful about living,” Dr. Franco says.
Related: Why ‘Just Be Yourself’ Is Actually Terrible Advice, According to a Behavioral Scientist
The Psychology Behind Feeling Uncomfortable Receiving Compliments“One reason we may be uncomfortable receiving compliments is because we struggle with our self-esteem,” Dr. Franco reiterates. “Self-esteem is known as a theory of self, and so if your self-esteem is low, your theory is that other people will reject you.”
You might hold onto this belief even if there’s “proof” that you’re well-liked based on your community and inner-circle.
“When other people accept you or love you, it doesn’t actually change that theory—instead, you feel like it’s only a matter of time until they find out the real you, and so their compliments can actually make you more anxious because it means that if they see you so positively, you’re only going to disappoint them more steeply,” she explains. “Compliments can trigger this kind of identity crisis where you feel like the other person doesn’t really see or know you, and you feel fundamentally misunderstood because their positive perception of you doesn’t match your perception of self.”
So, if you feel uncomfortable with praise, it could be because you don’t feel that same awe, pride or appreciation toward yourself.
“We can really only internalize feedback from other people if it’s at least somewhat aligned with how we see ourselves,” Dr. Franco says. “So it’s not that these people with low self-esteem don’t want to be loved—it’s that they can’t actually receive and internalize that love because their theory of self won’t let them.”
She understands that this theory of self sounds altogether bad, but she explains that what it does for people with low self-esteem is it “makes things predictable and gives them a sense of control. It makes them feel like they’re prepared for those bad things to happen, and so when anything happens that refutes that theory, it can make folks feel as if they’re disoriented and no longer have a sense of predictability, coherence and control.”
G.P. Putnam's Sons
What Would a ‘Healthy’ Response to a Compliment Look Like?If automatically rejecting a compliment doesn’t point to a healthy self-esteem, what does a healthier response look like?
Well, part of it has to do with simple acceptance and not overthinking the words.
“The thing about people living with low self-worth is that they are sort of not really living in the present—they’re always imposing this theory that other people will reject or hurt them onto the sense of reality,” Dr. Franco explains. “And people who have higher self-worth, they are ultimately really living in the present, and so when you compliment them, they’re not comparing that compliment to their theory of themselves as unlovable and deciding whether to reject it based on that. They’re simply taking the compliment as it is at face value. It’s not threatening, and it’s not something that they feel pressure to live up to in the future. There’s not all of this baggage added to the compliment in terms of high expectations, pressure and feeling misunderstood.”
TL;DR?
“What people with high self-worth can teach us is to simply receive the compliment without attaching all that baggage to it. So basically, the healthy response to receiving a compliment is to be present for it, internalize it and take it at face value. It’s to trust the compliment as it is,” she says.

Next Steps: How To Work on Receiving Positive FeedbackWhat’s interesting is that to move forward and grow in this area, we should actually back up, in a way.
“The reason that people don’t receive these compliments is because their theory of themselves as unlovable, and this theory actually comes from our memories,” Dr. Franco tells Parade. “Researchers say memories are the database of self-esteem, and so you feel low self-worth because you’ve been rejected, bullied, neglected, and a part of you thinks that this will just happen again. So, if you receive a compliment, you think somebody’s trying to elevate you higher, which means you’ll only fall more precipitously once that rejection returns.”
She understands that it “may seem like it’s impossible to receive compliments because if your theory of self is based on your memories, then those have already happened,” however, she explains that “you cannot change the past, but new research finds that you can actually change the past, or at least the way that it lives inside of you.”
Revisit negative memories“Researchers say memories are made to predict the future and not just record the past, which means you can update them based on more information, so they could better predict the future,” Dr. Franco shares. “And so that’s why you can return to negative memories of rejection and abandonment, and picture yourself as an adult intervening in the memory to give yourself what you might have needed at that moment. You might say to your childhood self that they’re safe, that you’re never going to abandon them, and that they are so lovable.”
This exercise can make more of a difference than you might expect.
“Researchers find when people return to their memories and change them in this way that they not only experience higher self-esteem, but you see changes in the part of their brain that records memories, which is called the hippocampus,” she tells Parade. “So basically, we need to revisit the past and give our past a new outcome.”
Curious to learn more? Dr. Franco says, “I provide a ton of research-backed exercises for how to do so in my new book.”
Related: Psychiatrist Says This Hobby Is Best for ‘Deep Feelers’ Who’ve Been Told They’re ‘Too Sensitive’
Truly acknowledge your feelingsRevisiting your memories to work on a new outcome is only one tactic. Another step you can take involves intentionally remaining in the moment and acknowledging (as well as analyzing) your feelings. It’s easier said than done.
“Notice if your sense of self is getting in the way of you receiving that compliment,” Dr. Franco recommends. “You notice those feelings of threat and anxiety, so they don’t hijack and overtake you, and you try to leave room for actually receiving what the other person is saying. You might ask yourself, ‘If I were able to take this compliment to be true, then how would I react to it and actually feel what it would be like to take this compliment to be true?'”
Then, instead of either giving a quick “thanks” on autopilot or focusing only on your discomfort, you will be able to reply in a more genuine (and growth-centered) way.
“Once you go through that process, you can actually ask yourself how you’d feel in internalizing the compliment, and then tell the person how their compliment affects you,” Dr. Franco continues. “You might say something like, ‘That really brightens my day,’ or ‘I feel really seen and appreciated by you saying that.'”

1977 Music Video, Produced by Mike Nesmith, Was Years Ahead of Its Time
In 1977, Mike Nesmith released a groundbreaking video that would change pop culture forever. Four years before the launch of MTV, The Monkees alum produced a short film to promote his song “Rio,” changing the way fans would “look” at music. Nearly 50 years later, Nesmith’s vision remains a masterclass in visual storytelling.
“Rio,” from Nesmith’s album From the Radio Engine to the Photon Wing, featured a blend of country rock and Latin rhythms, and the accompanying video clip leaned into the song’s theme of escapism with whimsical imagery of Nesmith floating through the sky.
Nesmith once explained why he produced the musical movie years before MTV made it the norm—and why his was unique from the few other clips that were already out there.
“I had been asked by [Island Records founder] Chris Blackwell if I would be willing to make a clip for ‘Rio’ he could use to promote the record around the European continent. It would get played on television that way,” Nesmith explained to Wisconsin Public Radio. “Well, I didn’t know what he was talking about, so I had to go and do some research. There were hardly any out there. The ones that were out there were people standing up in front of a microphone and singing.”
RELATED: 1966 Monkees Hit Featured a Producer’s Scream You May Have Missed
“I thought well, I want it to look like an old-time movie,” Nesmith recalled. “We went to the edit bay. We said, ‘OK, let’s just start putting pictures on this thing.’ So, we put one picture, and we added another picture to it. And after about the sixth or seventh picture a very curious thing started to happen. The music took over the narrative. The music was the continuity, and the images fit that continuity in a way I’d never seen. Once it was finished, [director] Bill Dear and I looked at him and said, ‘This is extraordinary. I don’t know what this is.’ Bill said, ‘I don’t know either.’”
Nesmith started showing the film around, explaining that it was “a way to present music in the age of video.”
“’It’s a music video,’” he told people. “Nobody had heard that word. Nobody had any idea what it was.”

Two years after “Rio,” Nesmith produced a video for his song “Cruisin.’”
“[My] first music video, ‘Rio’, taught me a lot, as well as the second, ‘Cruisin’, where William Dear and I discovered ‘Rio’ wasn’t a fluke,” he once told Best Classic Bands.
Nesmith had an epiphany about the then-new medium, realizing he needed a place to “put” videos.
“As it became obvious that it was an art form, more people started to make them after seeing ‘Rio’,” he told Rolling Stone in 2013. “They started making them spontaneously, and I kept thinking, ‘Where do you play this? What would I do with this?’ The answer was that I simply needed to complete the equation. ‘Radio is to records as television is to video.’ Then it was like, ‘Of course!’ and thus MTV was born. I just took that idea and put together some programs and sent it over to Warner Bros. and so forth. Next thing you know, there it was.”
RELATED: The Monkees ‘Best Song of All Time’ Became a No. 1 Hit Twice
Nesmith’s original idea was a short-lived Nickelodeon show called Pop Clips in 1980, which featured VJs introducing music videos. The following year, the all-music video channel MTV was born.
While The Monkees star stopped short of claiming that he invented MTV, he noted in interviews that he was there for the “birth” of it.
Years later, Nesmith had another vision for the future of video.
“Moving into the worlds of virtual reality will change everything,” he told Best Classic Bands in 2017. “The storytellers have more technology than ever, and they are more active than ever. There’s great stuff out there, with more to come.”
Five decades after “Rio,” Nesmith’s pioneering clip remains proof that music was meant to be seen as much as heard.

1969 Bo Diddley Cover, Lasting Over 25 Minutes Long, Became One of the 'Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll'
You know a song is a true hit when multiple chart-topping artists record their own versions of the tune, and Bo Diddley‘s “Who Do You Love” certainly falls into that category.
Originally released by the pioneering rocker in 1956, “Who Do You Love” was successfully covered by Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks (featuring Robbie Robertson on guitar), George Thorogood and the Destroyers (whose take on the tune became a rock radio mainstay), and Quicksilver Messenger Service (who turned the classic into a critically acclaimed psychedelic jam lasting the entire side of an album).
Quicksilver Messenger Service was born from the same San Francisco acid-rock scene that gave the world the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, though they were the last of those groups to get a record deal, according to Uncut. While their self-titled debut has been remembered favorably, it was their second album, 1969’s Happy Trails, that would go on to be ranked among Rolling Stone‘s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
By the time they were recording Happy Trails, a lengthy interpretation of “Who Do You Love” had become a staple of Quicksilver Messenger Service’s concerts, and since the album was mostly recorded live at the Fillmores West and East, it made sense to include the cover. Of course, because the track came in at a little over 25 minutes long, it took up the entire first side (a shortened version played on the radio).
In his 1969 review of Happy Trails for Rolling Stone, Greil Marcus called “Who Do You Love” “one of the best rock and roll recordings to emerge from San Francisco, a performance that captures all the excitement and grandeur of the great days of the scene in a way that is almost too fine to be real.”
“If rock and roll really will stand, as the Showmen sang, it will be music like this that makes it that way,” Marcus wrote.

“Quicksilver goes into it at full speed, John Cipollina’s guitar alternately harsh and sweet, clashing with Gary Duncan’s rhythm, Greg Elmore’s drumming simple and solid, never an iota of sloppiness, not a note missed,” he continued. “They use the infamous Bo Diddley rhythm not as a crutch, not as something for the rhythm section to play with while the lead takes it; Quicksilver finds dimensions of that ‘bump buddy bump bump — bump bump’ beat that no one has even suggested before, as they stretch it, bend it, move around it, as a motif or a bridge, as an idea rather than as a pattern.”
Marcus went on to praise the audience participation on the recording as a “beautiful example of the kind of communication rock and roll is all about. Cipollina takes over again, the excitement flashes, and finally David Friberg and his bass slowly take it apart and put it back together, with the chilling words whispered and hissed out to the audience — ‘graveyard mind…don’t mind dyin’ — the tension builds and they hit it all at once, guitars harder and harder. Elmore pounding, voices screaming; everything working. By the time the band yells ‘Bye!’ to the audience it’s just not to be believed.”
In addition to all the praise from critics, Quicksilver Messenger Service was also awarded the distinction of having their rendition of “Who Do You Love” included on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.”

Walmart’s 'Delicate' Twist-Drop Birthstone Earrings Are 88% Off, and They Make a Great Anytime Gift
Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
Some gifts require detective-level work to come up with, while others practically come with the idea built in. Birthstone jewelry falls squarely into the latter category, taking something as simple as the month someone was born and turning it into a detail that feels specifically chosen for them. That makes it an easy answer for birthdays, of course, but also graduations, anniversaries, bridesmaid gifts, Mother’s Day, holidays, or those just-because occasions when flowers don’t feel like enough.
And right now, that thoughtful little detail doesn’t require a big budget. The Apsvo 18-Karat Gold-Plated Birthstone Twist-Drop Earrings are a whopping 88% off at Walmart, bringing the usual $120 price tag all the way down to $15. Choose the stone that corresponds with their birth month, tuck the pair away until the next occasion rolls around, and you’ll soon be known as the best gift-giver in your friend group or family.
Apsvo 18-Karat Gold-Plated Birthstone Twist-Drop Earrings, $15 (was $120) at Walmart Shop at WalmartThe earrings feature a classic drop silhouette, but the details make them much more intricate than a simple dangling stone. Each pair measures about 1.18 inches long with a pear-shaped birthstone suspended inside a sculptural, twisting frame. The metal curves around the stone like a ribbon, creating an open teardrop shape that keeps the colored center stone as the focus.
Rows of petite clear cubic zirconia trace portions of that swirl, adding extra sparkle along the sides without completely surrounding the birthstone. A larger round clear cubic zirconia (CZ) stone sits just above the drop.
You can choose from gold- and silver-tone finishes, so the same design can take on two noticeably different looks. The warm gold version gives the colorful stones a richer, more traditional jewelry feel, while the cool silver tone makes the clear CZ accents and saturated birthstone colors look especially crisp.

Jewelry lovers were enamored with this “beautiful” and “gorgeous” pair, calling the design “delicate” and “elegant.” Multiple reviewers commented on the “fabulous” packaging, making it easy to “give as a gift” right after it arrives.

Quote of the Day: French Writer François de La Rochefoucauld Endured Prison, Exile and a Devastating Battle Wound—Then Wrote a Piercing Truth About Giving Advice
François VI, due de La Rochefoucauld didn’t arrive at his understanding of human nature from the comfort of a quiet writing desk. The French aristocrat, soldier and writer survived political intrigue, imprisonment, exile and a serious battlefield injury before becoming famous for his remarkably concise—and often uncomfortable—observations about how people behave.
Born in Paris on Sept. 15, 1613, La Rochefoucauld belonged to one of France’s most prominent noble families. He served in military campaigns and became deeply involved in court politics, bringing him into conflict with powerful figures including Cardinal Richelieu and Cardinal Mazarin.
He was also an active participant in the Fronde, a series of revolts against the French monarchy between 1648 and 1653. His political ambitions and alliances led to his imprisonment in the Bastille and periods of exile. He was later seriously wounded in battle.
Those experiences exposed La Rochefoucauld to ambition, loyalty, vanity and self-interest—forces that would eventually become central to his writing.
After stepping away from politics and the battlefield, La Rochefoucauld found his most enduring calling. He became a master of the French maxim, a literary form built around brief, polished observations about human behavior.
Within the intellectual circles of Paris, writers and thinkers exchanged ideas about manners, morality and human nature. La Rochefoucauld proved particularly gifted at distilling complicated truths into sentences that were difficult to forget.
His Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales, commonly known as the Maximes, first appeared in an authorized French edition in 1665. He continued revising and expanding the collection throughout his lifetime, publishing its fifth and final lifetime edition in 1678.
Rather than simply telling people how they should behave, La Rochefoucauld examined the hidden motives beneath their actions—including love, fear, pride, ambition and self-interest. His observations could be witty, unsparing and just uncomfortable enough to feel true.
More than four centuries after his birth, one of his sharpest maxims captures a frustrating contradiction most of us still recognize in ourselves.
Quote of the Day by François VI, due de La Rochefoucauld“It is easier to be wise for others than for ourselves.”
La Rochefoucauld’s observation appears as Maxim 132 in his Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales. The French original reads, “Il est plus aisé d’être sage pour les autres que de l’être pour soi-même.”
The maxim appeared in Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales, whose first authorized French edition was published in 1665. La Rochefoucauld continued revising and expanding the collection throughout his life, and later editions included hundreds of additional maxims. The 1678 edition was the fifth and final edition published during his lifetime.
The line is quintessential La Rochefoucauld, which is brief, clever and just a little uncomfortable. It points to something most of us have experienced. We can often see clearly what someone else should do while having a much harder time following our own advice.
Related: Oscar Wilde Wrote This More Than 130 Years Ago—and It May Be More Relevant Than Ever
The Deeper Meaning of François VI, due de La Rochefoucauld’s QuoteIt can be easy to look at someone else’s situation from the outside and identify the solution. We may know exactly what a friend should say, how a colleague should respond or what someone we love should do next. But when we find ourselves facing a similar problem, that same clarity can suddenly disappear.
Why? Because other people’s problems usually don’t carry the same emotional weight as our own. When we are advising someone else, we can see the situation with a little more distance. We aren’t as tangled up in the fear, pride, hopes or disappointments that can influence our own choices.
That distinction was central to La Rochefoucauld’s writing. Again and again, his maxims look at the gap between the way people see themselves and what may actually motivate them. His observations can sound cynical. But they are often about encouraging us to look honestly at ourselves.
And that may be the wisdom of this particular maxim. Giving advice is easy. Following it is another story. The next time you find yourself confidently explaining to someone else exactly what they should do, La Rochefoucauld’s observation offers a useful question. Would I be just as wise if this were my problem?

“We promise according to our hopes, and perform according to our fears.”
“We are so accustomed to disguise ourselves to others, that in the end, we disguise ourselves to ourselves.”
“If we had no faults, we should not take so much pleasure in noting those of others.”
“Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones, as the wind blows out the candle and fans the bonfire.”
“No persons are more frequently wrong, than those who will not admit they are wrong.”

Walmart’s 'Sturdy' $17 Over-the-Door Organizer Adds 'Valuable Storage' Without Taking Up Floor Space
Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
It’s frustrating to know exactly where you want to put something but have nowhere to store it. And if you’re working with limited square footage, you may not have room for another dresser, shelving unit, or cabinet. That’s when it pays to get creative with your organization and look for unused spaces you can put to work — like the back of a door. An over-the-door organizer can add valuable storage without taking up any precious floor space.
One bestselling option worth considering is the LazySpin Hanging 4-Tier Over-the-Door Organizer. Right now, it’s on sale for 40% off at Walmart, bringing the price down from $28 to just $17. For less than $20, it’s an affordable way to add more organization to rooms that could use extra storage.
LazySpin Hanging 4-Tier Over-the-Door Organizer, $17 (was $28) at Walmart Shop at WalmartThe gray organizer features four roomy tiers along with multiple side pockets, giving you several places to sort your belongings. It measures about 42.5 inches tall, 13.8 inches wide, and 5.5 inches deep, so it takes advantage of vertical space without protruding too far into the room. The included clip-on hooks fit doors less than 1.65 inches thick, and the setup is designed to be quick and straightforward.
There’s also plenty of thoughtful storage built into the design. Four large window pockets make it easy to see what’s inside the main compartments, while six mesh side pockets provide convenient spots for smaller items. Built-in supports and sturdy bottom inserts help the bins handle heavier contents, while the side pockets keep frequently used essentials within easy reach instead of buried in a larger compartment.
The organizer is made from double-layer non-woven fabric with reinforced stitching, cardboard supports, and fiberglass tubes that help it maintain its shape. Those materials also give the hanging unit added stability, helping prevent it from swinging around every time the door opens or closes. It can hold up to 35.2 pounds, giving you plenty of capacity for everyday household items.
Its slim, vertical design makes it useful throughout the home. In a nursery or bedroom, you can use it for toys, bottles, accessories, and other small essentials. In the bathroom, it can hold toiletries and cleaning supplies, while a pantry or laundry room can benefit from extra space for snacks, spices, food items, and household supplies. It can even help corral smaller appliances and other items that don’t have a dedicated spot.
One reviewer shared, “They’re pretty sturdy and they hold a lot of stuff!.” Another shopper said they’re great for “keeping frequently used items close,” adding, “It’s easy to assemble and doesn’t wobble on the door. Plus, it adds valuable storage space to small bathrooms.”

Clarks’ 'Cute' Leather Mary Jane Flats Are Nearly 50% Off and Perfect for Fall Dress Season

There’s no question that Wednesday Addams has made dark, preppy style practically synonymous with fall, and Mary Janes are a super easy way to get the look. Clarks’ Jazmynn Iris Mary Jane Flats fit right in with their squared toes and slim straps, and they come in a glossy patent style or smooth black leather. The patent finish is currently on sale for just $51, while the leather version is $60, both down from $95 on Amazon. They come in sizes 5 through 12, including half and wide sizes.
These gorgeous flats have genuine leather uppers, breathable microfiber linings, and soft foam footbeds for extra padding. They feature a flexible, rubber-like outsole that provides grip, while the adjustable straps help keep the shoes from slipping at the heel. The squared toes also leave more room than sharply pointed flats, and the low heels measure just over half an inch.
Clarks Jazmynn Iris Mary Jane Flats, From $51 (were $95) at Amazon Shop at AmazonTheir classic silhouette can easily replace heels when an outfit needs something dressier than sneakers. Unlike ballet flats, the adjustable straps can be tightened or loosened depending on how you like your shoes to fit or whether you’re wearing socks. The bendable soles and barely-there heels make them practical for commuting or days filled with lots of walking, and they look dressy enough for work, dinner, and holiday plans.
Flight attendants have praised these shoes for work, while others packed them for trips or even hours of dancing. People with bunions and varicose veins also shared positive experiences. One wrote, “These are one of the best shoes I’ve ever put on my feet,” and described them as “very cute and very comfortable.” Another said, “These shoes are beautiful,” adding, “They are soft and bend.”
For full spooky season styling, you could pair the patent version with sheer black tights, a pleated mini skirt, and a fitted cardigan. They could also dress up jeans and an oversized sweater. Or, since the smoother leather version has less shine, they’re a breeze to pair with office dresses, midi skirts, or ankle-length pants.

Designed with deep pockets, the fitted sheet can fit mattresses up to 14 inches thick. It should stay in place even if you tend to toss and turn throughout the night. The border is fitted with 360-degree elastic, allowing you to put it on your mattress without too much effort.
Whenever you need to give this comforter set a refresh, just toss everything into the washing machine with cold water and tumble dry on low heat. Customers mentioned that it washes and dries really well without the comforter’s filling clumping up or losing its fluffiness.
