In September 1977, Loretta Lynn was still riding high on the success of her tribute album, I Remember Patsy, proving once again why she was one of country music’s biggest stars. But that month, she was also having to make room for her youngest sister, Crystal Gayle, who was climbing the charts with a country crossover hit of her own, one that would eventually become her signature song.

Released in June 1977, Gayle’s “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” was the lead single from her fourth studio album, We Must Believe in Magic, which would become the first platinum album by a female country artist. The track achieved massive crossover success, becoming a four-week No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and climbing to No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Beyond chart history, though, the song has a backstory that is just as compelling.

In 1977, songwriter Richard Leigh was still relatively new to the Nashville scene. He’d written three Top 10 country hits for Gayle, including “I’ll Get Over You,” her first country No. 1, but he was still looking for his next hit song. So, with “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” he wanted to go big.

According to American Songwriter, Leigh wrote the song with Shirley Bassey in mind to sing it. A Welsh pop singer with a powerful voice, she was already a major international star and the conduit Leigh thought could help him break out of the dry spell he was experiencing.

But fate had other ideas.

After the success of “I’ll Get Over You,” Leigh’s landlady, songwriter Sandy Mason Theoret, told Allen Reynolds, a friend of Leigh’s and Gayle’s producer, that the songwriter was feeling discouraged. Reynolds then visited Leigh, and the two sat around playing songs. When Leigh played him “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” and mentioned that his publisher planned to pitch it to Bassey, Reynolds immediately wanted it for Gayle.

“Shirley Bassey my ass, I want that song!” Reynolds famously said.

Reynolds believed Gayle to be the perfect vehicle for the song. When they took it into Jack’s Tracks in Nashville on Oct. 27, 1976, the song clicked so perfectly with Gayle’s smooth vocals and Hargus “Pig” Robbins’ signature piano figure that the final record was actually captured in just one single vocal take.

“That was a first take,” Gayle once told Billboard. “I did not re-sing it. It just fell into place, beginning with Pig Robbins’ opening work on the piano. It was magic in the studio that day.”

The song arrived during a career-defining year for Gayle, who won her first CMA Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1977. It also earned her first—and still only—Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female. Going one step further, the song also nabbed Leigh the Grammy for Best Country Song for writing it.

“I knew it was a special song,” Gayle said. “But I didn’t know just how special it was. I knew that it was going to touch a lot of people.”

The song was hardly the end of Leigh’s success. He went on to write country No. 1s including “Life’s Highway” for Steve Wariner and “Only Here for a Little While” for Billy Dean, while also co-writing “Somewhere in My Broken Heart,” recorded by Dean, and “The Greatest Man I Never Knew,” recorded by Reba McEntire.

Nearly five decades later, the appeal of “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” is easy to understand. Its understated arrangement, memorable piano line, and intimate vocal give Gayle’s performance a quality that still feels remarkably fresh. It’s a timeless song for a timeless beauty and still sounds incredible today.

Desi Arnaz may be best remembered as Ricky Ricardo, the charismatic bandleader constantly trying to keep up with Lucy’s latest scheme on I Love Lucy, but his real-life story was far more layered than the sitcom role that made him a household name.

Born into a well-connected family in Cuba in 1917, Arnaz saw his life change dramatically after political unrest forced his family to flee to the United States when he was a teenager. He arrived with little money, learned to make his own way and soon found a career in music, bringing the sounds of the conga and Latin dance orchestras to American audiences.

His career took another turn when he met Lucille Ball, setting off one of television’s most famous love stories and creative partnerships. Together, the pair launched I Love Lucy in 1951, with Arnaz stepping into the role of Ricky while quietly transforming the business behind the scenes.

Despite Desi Arnaz’s lasting impact both on and off screen, he was also known to enjoy his time in the kitchen. One recipe he and Lucille Ball reportedly loved was Paprika Steak, a simple but flavorful dish made with everyday pantry staples. The recipe turns an ordinary steak dinner into something a little more special, thanks to its rich, savory, paprika-based flavor. So, when I came across it, I knew I had to give it a try and find out whether this old-school dinner was really as good as it sounded. Here’s my review of Desi Arnaz’s paprika steak recipe, plus tips for making it even better.

For this flavorful steak recipe, you’ll need bacon and a little of the rendered bacon fat, along with green peppers, green onions and fresh tomatoes. The remaining ingredients include olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, garlic powder, paprika, chili peppers, steaks and soy sauce.

The recipe begins by crisping up bacon, then using some of the rendered bacon fat to sauté green peppers, green onions and fresh tomatoes. From there, you’ll add a little olive oil, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce—though Arnaz makes it clear that a tiny amount goes a long way, calling for just a “teensy” or “poquito” splash. Garlic powder, paprika and chili peppers bring even more bold flavor to the mix, while the steaks get a quick soak in soy sauce before cooking.

What I Thought of Desi Arnaz’s Paprika Steak

This steak recipe differed from the methods I usually use, so I found it somewhat challenging to prepare. Because the instructions lacked some details, I had to make several adjustments and rely on my own cooking instincts throughout the process. The recipe did not clearly explain certain steps, and I was unable to find additional guidance online. It also failed to specify ingredient amounts, making it difficult to achieve a balanced result. In terms of flavor, the finished steak was more acidic than I expected and somewhat bland overall.

With clearer measurements, more thorough directions and a few seasoning adjustments, this recipe could be much easier to follow and more flavorful. But, of course, taste is subjective to what each person prefers, so this may be exactly what you need without the ingredients I added in.

4 Tips for Making Desi Arnaz’s Paprika Steak

Before you make this steak yourself, keep these four prep tips in mind.

1. Allow the steak to become room temp before cooking and adding seasoning.

Allowing steak to come closer to room temperature before cooking can help it cook more evenly, especially with thicker cuts. Take the steak out of the refrigerator about 20 to 30 minutes before cooking, keeping it covered and out of direct heat.

2. Use a quality ribeye steak.

Use a quality ribeye steak for the best results. Ribeye is naturally rich and flavorful because of its marbling, or the small streaks of fat throughout the meat. As it cooks, this fat renders and helps keep the steak tender, juicy and full of flavor.

3. Allow the steak to marinate for about 20 minutes.

Plan ahead and allow the steak to marinate for about 20 minutes before cooking. This short marinating time gives the salt, seasonings, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and other flavors an opportunity to coat and lightly flavor the meat without overwhelming the natural richness of the ribeye.

4. Use a little sugar to help with the acidity.

Use a small amount of sugar to balance the marinade’s acidity. Ingredients such as soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco can create a sharp, tangy flavor, so a little sugar helps round out those notes without making the steak taste sweet.

Final Thoughts

This recipe was not that easy to follow because the preparation instructions were vague and left several important details unclear. As a result, it was easy to become confused about how to proceed. What I did, however, was adjust the recipe to suit my own taste. I used 1 tablespoon each of salt, pepper, brown sugar, garlic powder and paprika. I also added 2 tablespoons each of soy sauce, olive oil and Worcestershire sauce, along with a dash of Tabasco for extra heat.

For anyone else looking to try this recipe, it’s a great base to build off of to suit your own tastebuds. However you choose to enjoy it though, it’s definitely worth a try!

That concept fits nicely with the way Trader Joe’s fans already shop. It’s become known for convenient ingredients that can do plenty of heavy lifting in a recipe, from frozen foods and prepared sauces to its signature snacks and condiments.

What Has Pink Said About Parenting?

Back in 2018, Pink hit the cover of PEOPLE alongside Willow and Jameson. She made it clear that one of the hardest things about being a mom is living in the gray area.

“The thing about parenting is you never know if anything you’re doing is working,” she said. “That’s been the most humbling thing for me. In my head, I sound amazing and then I turn around and her eyes are completely glazed over. I have no idea. We’ll see.”

Pink has used an attachment parenting style in raising her little ones.

“Yeah, I believe in affection,” she said. “I believe in needs being met and faith being implemented, and I believe in letting your kids know they can count on you, and that you’ll be there. My parents obviously did not believe in that and I worked out okay. I always tell Willow, ‘I’m going to teach you the rules so that you’ll know how and when to break them.’ ”

HGTV star Erin Napier is used to defending her and her husband Ben Napier‘s decision in 2025 to start homeschooling their daughters Helen, 8, and Mae, 5. As the Home Town couple began their second year of at-home lessons on everything from math to music, numerous critics of the approach voiced their opinions on a post Erin shared on Wednesday, September 9.

But Erin wasn’t the only one to jump into the comments to defend the parenting decision. She received back-up from her mom, Karen Rasberry, who has periodically made appearances on Napier’s popular HGTV show, Home Town.

After Napier posted a sweet photo of Ben reading a history book on the floor with Mae, the comment section was flooded with messages from her followers.

While the majority supported their decision not to send their girls to public school in their hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, calling their commitment “wonderful” and “inspiring,” some argued that Erin and Ben’s daughters could suffer socially, emotionally and academically.

“I believe our public schools are a pivitol part of our Home Towns, working together, entrusting one another to nurture and educate our children to carry on the community,” one argued. “Home schooling just seems to me like you’re saying, ‘i don’t trust my neighbors enough to teach my children, you’re children are not good enough to learn alongside my children.'”

One particularly noteworthy comment came directly from Rasberry, who stood up for her daughter (and her son, Clark, who has one child) by addressing the naysayers herself, writing, “Trust me. All three of my grandchildren have seen more of the best of the world than 99% of all the children confined to traditional classrooms.”

Erin Napier Shared a Shocking Experience From Her Childhood

Erin entered the chat when someone in the comments wrote, “The concept is wonderful , but they really need to experience the real world, getting along with others laughing learning with others ! Dealing with the real world !”

The longtime HGTV star replied, “Is everyone in the real world the exact same age, in one place together every day? No. Our kids interact with all ages every day in sports, art classes, dance classes, field trips, coming on set with us, and working together to do their chores every day. I know it’s what is familiar to you, but it is absolutely not the only way.”

In a second comment, Erin continued, “My social skills had to be learned sitting still in a room with people my age, many who had extremely limited or poor parenting at home, in my most formative and vulnerable years. I thank God my parents were so influential on me!”

As her followers went back and forth with their opinions on the matter, Erin added a shocking detail about her childhood that cemented her decision to keep her kids at home.

She wrote, “When they’re little children, I absolutely should and will keep them away from children whose parents make bad decisions for them. I was exposed to porn on a school bus by a boy my age in 5th grade. That was the one and only time I rode the bus, because my parents cared enough to change it immediately. I am happy to be criticized if this is the (poor) argument you want to make.”

In addition to homeschooling their kids, Erin and Ben also co-founded a non-profit organization in 2023 called Osprey (Old School Parents Raising Engaged Youth), which aims to help families raise kids who have “social media-free childhoods until they graduate high school.” 

Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad has been ranked No. 1 on the list of the 10 Greatest Books of the Last 20 Years, adding another major recognition to a novel that already won both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction.

Collider’s ranking places The Underground Railroad at the top of its list. The novel stands above nine other books selected for their impact on storytelling over the past two decades.

The recognition also brings attention to the personal setting in which Whitehead worked on the acclaimed novel. During the writing process, the author used an office in the basement of his home. He described keeping his writing and family life separate while working on the book.

“My office is in the basement of the house, and I would work down there and then come up around 3 PM to go shopping for food, cook for my family, then have dinner together,” he said, per BuzzFeed. “So I kept it very separate. When I was younger and had more energy, I worked at night but I can’t do that anymore. Instead, I just watch cooking shows and drink wine and go to sleep.”

That basement became the workspace for a novel that would later become one of Whitehead’s most recognized works.

Published by Doubleday in August 2016, The Underground Railroad follows Cora, an enslaved young woman living on a cotton plantation in Georgia. She decides to escape with Caesar, another enslaved person, after he tells her about the Underground Railroad.

Whitehead gives the historical idea a different form in the novel. Instead of being only a network used by people helping enslaved people escape, the Underground Railroad becomes a literal underground railway, complete with tracks, trains, engineers, conductors and secret stations.

Cora’s journey takes her through different places, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Indiana. At each stop, she faces a different version of the dangers and racial systems surrounding Black people.

She is also pursued by Arnold Ridgeway, a determined slave catcher who has a personal reason for hunting her. Cora’s mother, Mabel, had escaped from the plantation years earlier, and Ridgeway had never been able to capture her.

Collider highlighted the way Whitehead uses Cora’s journey to examine racism, cruelty and social power. The ranking described Cora as a resilient and deeply human character whose desire for freedom drives the story. 

The novel combines historical fiction with an alternate-history idea. Its fictional railroad allows Whitehead to move Cora through different versions of American society while keeping the violence and realities of slavery at the center of the story.

Goodreads lists the book with a 4.06 average rating based on hundreds of thousands of ratings. It also identifies the novel as the winner of the 2016 Goodreads Choice Award for Readers’ Favorite Historical Fiction.

The idea for The Underground Railroad did not begin shortly before publication. Whitehead said he first thought of the concept in 2000 while he was in Brooklyn.

“I first had the idea in 2000. I was in Brooklyn on my couch and heard some reference to The Underground Railroad and thought about how when I was a kid, I thought it was a literal railroad.”

At the time, Whitehead did not believe he was ready to write the story. He had recently completed a research-heavy book and felt that he needed more time before taking on the project.

He eventually returned to the idea and began working seriously on the novel in 2014. His research included narratives written by formerly enslaved people, including accounts collected by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s.

The novel became a major literary success after its 2016 publication. It won the National Book Award for Fiction and the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Whitehead later won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction again for The Nickel Boys in 2020, making him one of only four writers to win the fiction prize twice.

The Underground Railroad also won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and the Goodreads Choice Award for Historical Fiction. It was selected for Oprah’s Book Club and was included on former President Barack Obama’s summer reading list.

The novel also reached audiences beyond the printed page. A television miniseries adaptation, written and directed by Barry Jenkins, was released on Amazon Prime Video in May 2021.

For a novel that began as an idea Whitehead carried for years and was written from a basement office at home, its journey has been remarkably far-reaching.

In today’s episode of The Bold and the Beautiful, Steffy revealed to Carter that she is pregnant. Carter, initially stunned, congratulates Steffy and extends his excitement to Finn, only for Steffy to declare, “No.”

Carter is shocked; he asks what she means by saying “no?” to which Steffy quickly explains that there is no way Finn could be the child’s father and that the baby is his.

Steffy goes on to share that, before her one-night stand with Carter, she and Finn hadn’t been intimate in some time, as he had been working long hours at the hospital, preventing them from connecting.

Fans react to the latest twist

Fans immediately took to social media to share their thoughts and opinions. Some don’t believe that this is the end of the story. One user on X wrote, “I figured this was coming. Interesting that we are bypassing the paternity test. Call me delulu. I still think Finn will be the father in the end! 😩.”

A second fan, Alan Sarapa of The Chat podcast, added his perspective, taking the show at its word, writing, “I do applaud the show for being decisive with the paternity of Steffy’s baby. I was worried that they’d get nervous and eventually make it Finn’s baby, which would be boring.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see how the story plays out. Still, previews for the story indicate plenty of twists and turns to come, with the soap seemingly setting up for Carter to suggest that he and Daphne raise the child as their own, and to say that Steffy was a surrogate to cover up the affair.

Bob Mackie was more than a legendary costume designer. He was one of the most influential designers in American entertainment, understanding that a star’s costumes and clothing could become as much a part of their legacy as their performances on stage and screen.

The famed designer, who died Monday at the age of 87, is being celebrated by a who’s who of superstars, including Goldie Hawn, who shared that Mackie had “the essence of an angel.”

“We lost another great one. @bobmackie had the essence of an angel and the talent from God.

In addition to Goldie Hawn, Bob Mackie was famous for his sparkly, over-the-top creations for the likes of Cher, Carol Burnett and Marilyn Monroe, earning him the monikers “King of Sequins,” “Sultan of Sequins” and “Guru of Glitter.”

Bob Mackie built a career creating extraordinary gowns featuring feathers, rhinestones and sequins that helped cement the legacies of some of the most iconic women of the 1960s and 1970s. There was nothing small or polite about a Bob Mackie design, and his creations helped create superstars.

Mackie’s career began in Hollywood in the 1960s, where he worked as a sketch artist for famed designers including Edith Head and Jean Louis. One of his earliest assignments was sketching the now-famous dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

Mackie eventually began creating his own designs and counted Mitzi Gaynor as one of his first major clients.

But it was television that would become Mackie’s great canvas, where his designs became almost as iconic as the women who wore them.

Who could forget Carol Burnett’s over-the-top costumes on The Carol Burnett Show, designed by Mackie himself? His creation for her Gone With the Wind parody was so iconic that it eventually ended up in Washington’s Smithsonian museum.

The future of MomTok and The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives are in peril, as a cast member confirms her exit. Mikayla Matthews is stepping away from the Hulu series, after recently spotted in Italy filming the sixth season.

The decision comes off the back of the return of the series. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Season 5 dropped on Hulu on Sept. 10 with just five episodes, just half of the usual amount fans get to watch. It was all that was filmed ahead of the 2023 video of Taylor Frankie Paul resurfacing and her season of The Bachelorette being pulled from the ABC schedule.

As that news grew, the women of MomTok shared their opinions and their side, with Matthews making it clear that she wasn’t Team Taylor. She also wasn’t Team Dakota, and throughout the fifth season of the series she cemented her belief that she was Team Kids. She just wanted them to be happy, cared for, and safe.

Matthews repeatedly made it clear that the children were suffering from the continued exposure to Paul and Dakota Mortensen’s drama. However, it was only a week ago that she decided to step away from the show.

In a statement on Instagram, Matthews said, “I’ve said from the beginning of this that I’m not comfortable being a part of something that continues to platform behavior I don’t agree especially given my own experience growing up in a home with multiple forms of abuse. There’s no amount of money worth going against my morals or changing the stance I’ve had since I first saw and heard the things that made me feel this strongly. And for me personally, continuing to directly profit from this behavior feels wrong and unethical. It feels like a disservice to the children, everyone’s healing and the millions of people watching.”

The statement suggests that her decision to step away is due to the Paul situation. Many have now speculated that it means Hulu has decided to continue The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives with Paul, with one commenter asking an important question, “Does @hulu not realize we want to watch the show without her”

In the comments on her post, fans of Matthews supported her decision to step away. One user commented, “Good for you!! 👏 way to stand your ground. Now the rest should do it too!”

Since the release of SLOMW Season 5, there have been questions about Matthews and Paul’s friendship, as Matthews regularly made digs at Paul, leading to an argument outside of Mason McWhorter’s house. That later led to another blow up at Jessi Draper’s house warming party, where Matthews shared that she wasn’t going to keep enabling Paul’s behavior.

The 26-year-old continues to stand by those words, sharing, “Supporting an ADULT doesn’t mean constantly making excuses for toxic behavior while giving unconditional sympathy and grace with zero accountability or change. I was in that enabling cycle for years, and I’m not going to be a part of that again! love you all.”

What does this mean for The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Season 6? None of this is clear at this time. Matthews will continue to post on her own social media platforms, sharing that she is using this as a way to share her story and her health. Season 6 was filming, and it’s possible that she will be there for part of the season and then leave, similar to how Paul wasn’t available for confessionals toward the end of the season and how Whitney Leavitt was only there for sporadic moments due to time in New York.

Matthews is the second original star of the series to exit for Season 6. Leavitt will not return, which she confirmed after Season 5 dropped on Hulu.

Morgan Fairchild began her professional acting career on the CBS daytime soap opera Search for Tomorrow. During the conversation, Fairchild discussed returning to The Bold and the Beautiful after making her first appearance back in 2009. Reflecting on her experience, Fairchild shared, “We always have a great time, and we can sit and gab and catch up.”

Over the years, Fairchild has worked with many actors on the series. “So far the scenes I’ve had, Jim J. Montana was no longer the young quarterback who had built a legendary career in San Francisco. He was 38 and nearing the twilight of his playing days, while Elway was still in his prime, famous for his toughness, comebacks and ability to win a game at the last minute.

The Oct. 17, 1994, showdown between the Chiefs and Broncos felt like a battle between two larger-than-life personalities. With just 1:29 left, Elway appeared to deliver the movie ending worthy of a Monday Night Football classic, scoring a touchdown that put Denver ahead 28–24.

But Montana had one more scene left.

Joe Montana’s Near Perfect Final Drive

With the game seemingly slipping away, Montana led Kansas City on a 75-yard final drive. He completed seven of eight passes before throwing the winning touchdown to Willie Davis with only eight seconds remaining, giving the Chiefs a 31–28 victory.

The game was later ranked No. 4 on a list of the greatest games in Monday Night Football history and was remembered as one of the best games of the 1994 NFL season.

It was the kind of ending that made Monday Night Football feel like more than a football game. Elway had seemingly written the final chapter, only for Montana to take the ball and rewrite it.

From Superstar Quarterbacks to NFL Legends

John Elway is no longer the quarterback trying to earn his team a win. Today, he is part of the Broncos’ front office, watching a new generation from the executive side. Montana’s place in NFL history is permanently cemented, making the 1994 matchup feel like a snapshot of an earlier NFL era when two superstar quarterbacks could turn a regular-season Monday night into one of the most talked-about games of the season.

Tonight’s Chiefs-Broncos game has its own modern storyline, with Mahomes and Nix leading teams with different expectations into the season. While it remains to be seen whether tonight’s game will mark the beginning of another Chiefs-Broncos battle talked about for years to come, the 1994 showdown between Montana and Elway remains the ultimate scene-stealer.

Its ending couldn’t have been scripted any better by a Hollywood writer.

The 78th Emmy Awards, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, airs live coast-to-coast tonight from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, honoring the best in the television from the past year, making it an event TV fans won’t want to miss.

The “In Memoriam” segment will feature two-time Grammy Award-nominated and multi-platinum selling artist Noah Kahan performing “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

The broadcast will feature celebrations of the milestone 30th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with David Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the 50th anniversary of Charlie’s Angels with Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith.

The 2026 Emmy Awards will be telecast live on Monday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.

Once you see it, you’ll wonder why these two didn’t team up sooner. It turns the nostalgic dessert into a seriously cute lip collection, complete with squishy, jelly-inspired shades and sweet flavors that are basically begging to be added to your bag.
