1983 Track Allegedly Written for Meat Loaf Became Singer's Most Famous Signature Song

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 11:35pm

After seeing singer Meat Loaf perform in 1981, Welsh powerhouse Bonnie Tyler sought out his writer, Jim Steinman, in order to work with her on her next project. Tyler aimed to create work in the style of Phil Spector, who had largely retired, and believed Steinman was the only producer in the business who could help her accomplish that goal.

In 1982, Steinman played multiple tracks for Tyler, including the power ballad, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” After Steinman played Tyler the song, she was eager to get into the studio and lay down the recording, saying, “I just had shivers right up my spine…I couldn’t wait to actually get in and record it.”

According to Meat Loaf, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” had been written for his album Midnight at the Lost and Found, but following a payment dispute between his label and Steinman, the songs ended up going to different artists. Both Tyler and Steinman have vehemently denied this claim, with Tyler saying of the allegations, “Meat Loaf was apparently very annoyed that Jim gave that to me. But Jim said he didn’t write it for Meat Loaf, that he only finished it after meeting me.”

At over seven minutes long, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” had to be shortened significantly as a single for radio play. The radio version was cut down to just four minutes and 30 seconds, with the music video clocking in at five minutes and 34 seconds.

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” became Tyler’s highest-charting single in multiple countries. The song peaked at number one in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Over the years, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” has become one of the best-selling singles of all time, selling over 13 million copies worldwide.

Critics have called the track “one of the finest ballads to ever hit the radio” and “”rock at its most melodramatic.” As of 2026, the song is one to have surpassed more than a billion streams on Spotify.

Following Tyler’s death in July of 2026, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” re-entered the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at number 26.

How Matthew Rhys Makes Emmy History Twice in 1 Night

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 11:15pm

There are still endless records waiting to be broken after 78 years of Primetime Emmy Awards. But Matthew Rhys — who has already been honored by the Television Comedy once before — just set a pair.

On Monday, September 14, the 51-year-old star of both Widow’s Bay and The Beast in Me strolled into the Emmys with Best Actor nominations for his leading turns in both series. And he would ultimately stroll out of the Los Angeles ceremony with trophies in hand for both performances.

No other performer has ever achieved such a feat — but Rhys’ historic night didn’t stop there. In factoring in the last time he won an acting Emmy — for The Americans back in 2018 — that means the Welsh star has now won all three lead acting prizes at the TV Academy’s annual event.

Check out Rhys’ Widow’s Bay acceptance speech on YouTube below.

Fans have since commented on NBC’s upload to show their love and support for Rhys’ big win. “Long awaited and anticipated. Good on him, so well deserved,” wrote one YouTube user, while another person commented, “He’s sooo good in this series.”

Oh, and make that four Emmys to Rhys’ name, by the way, after Widow’s Bay won for Best Comedy at the end of the night. Rhys is an executive producer on the show, in addition to starring in it.

This final race that was announced by “brothers” Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. After some expected banter between the True Detective co-stars — with Harrelson, 65, making jaw-dropping jokes about McConaughey’s mom — they finally revealed Apple TV’s hit horror comedy as the victor.

As Variety noted, Rhys’ bigger surprise of a win was the limited-series actor category, nabbing the prize over presumptive favorite Oscar Isaac (Beef) along with Riz Ahmed (Bait), Jason Bateman (Black Rabbit) and Charlie Hunnam (Monster: The Ed Gein Story).

Fans 'Cried Like a Baby' Over Ella Langley's 'Incredible' Impromptu Concert Moment

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 11:02pm

Ella Langley tugged on fans’ heartstrings everywhere during her latest concert when she did something she’s “never done before”: pulled one of her littlest fans on stage to sing with her.

Video captured by the girl’s mom shows the heartwarming moment during Langley’s West Virginia show on Saturday, Sept. 12, where she sang her heart out against the barricade until Langley stopped mid-song to pull her up on stage.

“I’ve never done this before,” the country songstress said, removing the mic from its stand and stepping forward to gesture at the pair, “but I have to get this little girl up here.” Nearby audience members screamed in excitement for her as she was lifted over the barricade and up to the stage by security, where she was promptly wrapped up in Langley’s arms in a big hug.

Langley had the girl, named Emmalee, introduce herself to the crowd, then requested they all light up their phone flashlights for her before the two finished the song as a sweet duet.

A photo snapped by another concert-goer and shared in the comments showed the little girl in the front row, holding up a sign that read “I’m Little Miss 2026, but I just want to be you! Can I sing with you? – Emma.” The sign appears to refer to the title of Little Miss Gallia County, a pageant award from the Gallia County Fair in Ohio. Emma proudly wore her pageant sash and tiara over her t-shirt and denim skirt.

Fans couldn’t believe they got to witness such a dream come true for one little country fan, with several admitting it brought tears to their eyes.

“I cried like a baby! I was so happy for her and so happy for you as a momma! 🥹,” one wrote, while a second reiterated, “This made me cry like a baby last night dreams come true for this little princess 🥹.”

“I cried so hard watching this! What an incredible moment 🥺🩷,” a third agreed, as someone else declared it to be the “Best moment of the whole concert!!!!!”

“such a sweet moment!” another emphasized, sharing that “everyone was cheering her on!”

Other videos from the little girl’s mom showed her completely enamored with Langley throughout the night, and Langley with her—the singer even personally handed her her guitar pick at some point.

Talk about a dream come true!

1966 Bob Dylan Hit, Ranked Among 'Greatest Songs of All Time,' Was Recorded in One Take on Valentine's Day

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 10:49pm

Of all the songwriters in rock history, Bob Dylan is widely considered to be among the best lyricists; after all, he’s the only rock star ever to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. But which of Dylan’s many outstanding classics is hailed as his own highest achievement?

That depends on who you ask, of course, but a popular pick with critics and fans alike has always been the incomparable “Visions of Johanna.”

Released on the iconic 1966 album Blonde on Blonde, “Visions of Johanna” has been hailed as “a tour de force, a breakthrough not only for the writer but for the very possibilities of songwriting” by Rolling Stone (RS also featured the song on their list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time“). Robert Shelton, author of No Direction Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan, ranked the song among Dylan’s most important works, comparing it to Keats’ “Ode to a Grecian Urn.” In 1999, Britain’s Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, even cited “Visions of Johanna” as the best song lyric of all time, by anyone, according to The Guardian. (And those are just a few examples.)

As for what “Visions of Johanna” is about, listeners have been analyzing the lyrics for decades trying to figure that out. (Such is the case with much of Dylan’s catalogue.) True to form, Dylan himself has never explained. What we do know, though, is that he wrote the song while staying at the Chelsea Hotel in NYC with his pregnant wife Sara Lownds — a circumstance which prompted music journalist Clinton Heylin, author of Revolution In The Air: The Songs of Bob Dylan, Volume One: 1957–73, to call it “one of the oddest songs ever written by a man who has just tied the knot and is enjoying a brief honeymoon in the city.”

Heylin’s point is a fair one, as the lyrics tell the tale of a man who seems to be torn between his current lover and the memories of a former one:

In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman’s bluff with the key chain
And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the “D” train
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it’s him or them that’s really insane
Louise, she’s all right, she’s just near
She’s delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
That Johanna’s not here
The ghost of ’lectricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place

When Dylan performed “Visions of Johanna” for the first time in concert in 1965, the audience included poet Allen Ginsberg, a major influence on Dylan, and Joan Baez, who couldn’t help but wonder if the fictional Johanna was based on her.

“He’d just written ‘Visions of Johanna,’ which sounded very suspicious to me…he’d never performed it before and [Bob] Neuwirth told him I was there that night and he performed it,” Baez said.

In November of that same year, Dylan attempted to record “Visions of Johanna” (originally titled “Seems Like a Freeze Out”) with the Hawks, but after 14 agonizing takes, it still wasn’t perfect.

A few months later, however, Dylan managed to get the song exactly right in just one take while recording in Nashville, aided by such gifted musicians as Al Kooper on Hammond B3 organ and Robbie Robertson on guitar. (Fun fact: The successful session just happened to take place on Valentine’s Day of 1966).

Alas, as fans likely already know, Dylan’s marriage to Lownds eventually crumbled, inspiring the acclaimed album Blood on the Tracks. But “Visions of Johanna” lives on. In 1985, Dylan made a concession to the song’s staying power, saying, “I still sing that song every once in a while. It still stands up now as it did then. Maybe even more in some kind of weird way.”

WATCH: 'Charlie's Angels' Stars Honor Farrah Fawcett 17 Years After Her Death

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 10:43pm

Charlie’s Angels Cheryl Ladd, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson honored their late costar Farrah Fawcett at the 78th Emmy Awards.

The trio reunited in honor of the hit series’ 50th anniversary to present the award for Outstanding Drama Series during the Monday, September 14, ceremony.

“I would like to acknowledge someone not standing with us tonight, and that’s my friend, Farrah Fawcett,” Smith said. “As I’ve said many times, Charisma doesn’t need a second season; she’s here, and she’s here with us in everyone’s collective memory.”

Jackson added, “Farrah was the shiniest angel of all. She was loved by millions of people all over the world, and she still is today. They’ll never forget her, and neither will we. I’m sure you won’t either.”

Fawcett—known for her signature hair and iconic 1976 red swimsuit poster—starred alongside Jackson and Smith during the show’s first season. However, she announced her exit ahead of season 2 and was ultimately replaced by Ladd.

The beloved actress tragically died at the age of 62 in June 2009 after a brutal battle with anal cancer.

Smith, Ladd and Jackson reunited earlier this year at a PaleyFest panel to celebrate the show’s milestone anniversary.

Dark 1979 Song, Written as a Bee Gees ‘Antidote,’ Was Called ‘a New Low’ for The Eagles

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 10:19pm

In 1979, disco was everywhere, and The Eagles weren’t exactly thrilled about it.

So Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Don Felder responded with one of the strangest songs in the band’s catalog: “The Disco Strangler,” a dark, jittery deep cut from The Long Run that turned the late-’70s disco scene into something decidedly sinister. The album credits list all three Eagles as writers, with Henley singing lead.

In his memoir “Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles”, Felder explained exactly what the band had in mind, writing that “‘Disco Strangler’ was designed as an antidote to the Bee Gees-discotheque craze” that followed the success of Saturday Night Fever.

“The one thing the Eagles agreed on was that we all hated disco music,” Felder added.

Felder said he started with a four-on-the-floor beat, straight quarter-note bass drum and no melody, then played over it. Henley came up with the concept of a beautiful woman dancing in the spotlight while the “disco strangler” waits in the wings to put his hands around her throat.

If the premise sounds creepy, that’s because even writers who have studied the Eagles’ catalog haven’t been quite sure what to make of it.

In “Eagles on Track: Every Album, Every Song,” author John Van der Kiste described “The Disco Strangler” as an “intentionally unpleasant” song that took the band’s previous digs at disco even further. He called its story “more sinister” than simple satire and ultimately dismissed the track as “filler of the worst kind.”

He wasn’t alone.

Eagles biographer Marc Eliot went even further, calling “The Disco Strangler” “a new low for the band.”

But the song has its defenders. AllMusic critic Mike DeGagne called it a “gem,” praising its anxious guitar work and Henley’s dry satire, while Rolling Stone ranked “The Disco Strangler” No. 28 on its list of the Eagles’ greatest songs, praising it as a “shadowy, pulsating” track with a ” subtle, ironic nod to thumpy disco beats [that] ended up being one of the Eagles’ most mordant recorded moments.”

More than four decades later, that disagreement might be the most interesting thing about “The Disco Strangler.” The Eagles set out to make an antidote to the Bee Gees-era disco explosion and wound up with a song that sounded enough like disco to become a strange, dark parody of the very music they disliked.

And depending on which critic you ask, the antidote may have been worse than the disease.

There’s even a strange afterlife for the song’s title. Brooklyn Nine-Nine featured a fictional serial killer known as the Disco Strangler, an old nemesis of Captain Holt (Andre Braugher). The character’s name was a nod to the Eagles song.

The 7 Most Surprising Wins at the 2026 Emmys — From Matthew Rhys to 'The Pitt'

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 10:15pm

Whether you treat television’s biggest night like the Super Bowl, or you refresh your X feed every few minutes to get a recap of the highlights, the best part of the Emmys are undeniably the shocking upsets and monumental moments that unfold throughout the night.

Even the most dedicated TV fan can’t perfectly predict how the award show will unfold, despite other awards bodies rewarding some of tonight’s nominees months prior. It wouldn’t be a fun night if we knew who would win these prestigious awards before the show even started, and tonight was full of surprises, both good and bad. Here are 7 of tonight’s most shocking wins, from supporting actors to the Emmys most prestigious series awards.

Stephen Root: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Widow’s Bay Stephen Root as Wyck Crawford in ‘Widow’s Bay’

Courtesy of Apple

Long-time character actor Stephen Root was thankfully given a significant role in Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay earlier this year when he played the curmudgeonly Wyck. It’s an understated performance in which Root uses his body and face to showcase dread and horror as the titular town he lives in becomes haunted by a centuries-old curse. With his win tonight, the actor beat out both Harrison Ford and Paul Downs for their respective final performances in Shrinking and Hacks, and also became the oldest man ever to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Tom Pelphrey: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Task Tom Pelphrey as Robbie Prendergrast in ‘Task’

Courtesy of HBO

Like Stephen Root, Tom Pelphrey was not a frontrunner to win in his designated category. While his performance in Task was undeniably one of the best performances nominated tonight, the HBO series wasn’t nearly as popular as the company’s other series The Pitt, whose cast dominated most of this category with nominations for Patrick Ball, Gerran Howell and Shawn Hatosy. Pelphrey beat the odds, and took home the statue for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, which will go down as one of tonight’s most deserving, and inspired wins.

Allison Janney: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, The Diplomat Allison Janney as Grace Penn in ‘The Diplomat’

Courtesy of Netflix

While Allison Janney is an established Emmy darling with 7 statues under her belt ahead of the award show tonight, The Diplomat has had a hard time securing the golden statue. This year, the nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series were largely made up of actors from The Pitt, making it seem likely that one of these actresses would take home the win. But, the awards show did what it does best, and in one of tonight’s most shocking moments, gave Janney her eighth Emmy. She herself was not expecting it, as she made her way to the stage with her mouth open in shock.

Sally Field: Outstanding Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Remarkably Bright Creatures Sally Field as Tova in ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’

Courtesy of Netflix

This category is always incredibly stacked, as it brings together both television and film, and tonight was no different. From a revelatory performance from Sarah Pidgeon in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette to Emmy darling Claire Danes latest performance in The Beast in Me, nobody was expecting for the sole film actress in the category to win tonight. Yet that’s what Sally Field did when she received her fourth Emmy for her performance in Remarkably Bright Creatures, making her the first actress to win this award for a TV Movie in 14 years.

Matthew Rhys: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Beast in Me AND Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Widow’s Bay Matthew Rhys as Nile Jarvis in ‘The Beast in Me’

Netflix

Matthew Rhys made history tonight after winning both Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his chilling performance in The Beast in Me and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work in Widow’s Bay. While both wins are incredibly deserved after the fantastic year he’s had, he is now the first person ever to claim both lead actor prizes in a single ceremony, as well as the first male performer to win in all three lead acting categories throughout their career with his 2018 win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his career-defining work in The Americans.

Related: Matthew Rhys on Falling in Love With Keri Russell While Being Co-Stars: ‘You Can’t Fight It’

The Pitt: Outstanding Drama Series Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby in ‘The Pitt’

HBO

The power of The Pitt is undeniable, as the series took home 5 out of 13 Emmys for its first season. But this year it seemed like Apple TV’s Pluribus was set to take home one of the biggest awards of the night. Vince Gilligan’s first series since Better Call Saul was a monumental piece of science fiction and television, and propelled Gilligan’s longtime collaborator Rhea Seehorn to win her first Emmy tonight with her win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Yet, it wasn’t enough, and the HBO powerhouse took home the award for Outstanding Drama Series, for a frankly, rather dull second season.

Jean Smart: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Hacks Jean Smart as Deborah Vance in ‘Hacks’

HBO

Hacks took dedicated television viewers and industry voters alike by surprise when it debuted back in 2021, and since then, the show has just gotten better. Part of its charm is Jean Smart’s crackling performance as Deborah Vance, a legendary and aging stand-up comedian who desperately needs to reinvent her act to avoid losing her residency at the Palmetto Casino. With Hacks coming to an end with its most recent season, it felt inevitable that the Emmys would award Smart the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. However, tonight’s win makes her the first actress in television history to win an Emmy for every season of a series.

His website describes him as a singer, songwriter, actor and vocal producer, while also highlighting his international connection to Norway. It lists “How Hard I Tried” and “Let’s Party” among his recent releases.

1984 Breakup Song Covered by Tina Turner Is Still a Moving Hit 42 Years Later

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 9:54pm

While working on his second studio album, No Brakes, English musician John Waite felt the (almost) complete album was still lacking a big, signature hit single. Waite went to a writing session in LA where a songwriter played him a guitar melody recorded on a cassette tape. Waite improvised the entire second verse and “missing you” hook without stopping, the end result becoming his 1984 hit breakup song, “Missing You.”

“Missing You” was written about three different women from his life, according to Waite. A current love interest, his soon-to-be ex-wife, and a lover he’d previously had in New York. Waite called the subject matter of the song “bittersweet” but felt so strongly that it should be included on the album that he convinced his record label to front the costs for him to record one last track for the final product.

“Missing You” topped the chart of the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 9 on the UK singles chart. The song secured Waite a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Male Performance.

In 1996, “Queen of Rock n’ Roll” Tina Turner covered “Missing You” for her ninth album, Wildest Dreams. Ironically, when Waite’s original was released in 1984, it ended Turner’s single “What’s Love Got To Do With It” reign on the chart. Turner’s cover peaked at 84 on the Hot 100 and number 12 on the UK singles chart. Critics called her cover version, “a lottery show appearance and a fine cover of this John Waite hit should do the business for la Turner.”

In 2006, 22 years after the original release, Waite re-recorded and reimagined “Missing You” with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss. The new rendition spent over 21 weeks on the Hot Country Songs chart.

Now 42 years after the fact, “Missing You” is still a breakup classic, perfect to listen to while reminiscing and looking back on relationships even though decades have passed since it was initially released.

‘90s Country Icons With 20 No. 1 Hits to Be Honored With Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 9:50pm

1990s country music superduo Brooks & Dunn will attend this year’s CMA Awards as very important guests.

The duo of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn will accept the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award — one of the most prestigious awards in the genre. It’s not an annual category during the show; rather, the trophy is handed out when it’s an appropriate time to spotlight a truly outstanding artist.

In 2026, that act is Brooks & Dunn.

Per the CMA, the “CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to an iconic artist who has attained the highest degree of recognition in country music. The award recognizes those who have achieved both national and international prominence and stature through concert performances, humanitarian efforts, philanthropy, streaming numbers, record sales, and public representation at the highest level. The artist receiving this award has positively impacted and contributed to the growth of the genre over the course of many years and has proven to have an unprecedented historical impact on fans and industry alike.”

Brooks & Dunn debuted in the late 1980s and went on to release 20 No. 1 hits across three decades, including “My Maria,” “Play Something Country,” “Red Dirt Road,” “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” and 16 others, despite a several-year break in the 2010s. They were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019.

“Few artists have left a mark on country music quite like Brooks & Dunn,” CMA Chief Executive Officer Sarah Trahern explains in a press release.

“Their music has set a standard that still resonates with new generations of artists, while continuing to win over new generations of fans,” she adds. “We are proud to celebrate everything they’ve given to this genre and the mark they continue to leave on its future.”

When Are the 2026 CMA Awards?

The 2026 CMA Awards will take place on November 18, 2026, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. “Country Music’s Biggest Night” will air live via ABC and Disney+ and can be streamed in the days after via Hulu. The show starts at 7PM ET.

This year marks the 60th annual CMA Awards.

Who Has the Most CMA Nominations This Year?

Ella Langley has a whopping nine CMA Awards nominations in 2026 — the most of any artist. Had she gotten one more nod, she’d tie with Alan Jackson, who holds the record for most nominations in a single year with 10.

However, she’s still a record-setter: Langley is one of a handful of artists to ever be nominated in the same category twice at the same time. This means she’s competing against herself for Single of the Year this year, with her megahit “Choosin’ Texas” battling her more recent single, “Be Her.”

Which Artists Have Been Given the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award?
  • 2026: Brooks & Dunn
  • 2025: Vince Gill
  • 2024: George Strait
  • 2022: Alan Jackson
  • 2021: Loretta Lynn
  • 2020: Charley Pride
  • 2019: Kris Kristofferson
  • 2016: Dolly Parton
  • 2015: Johnny Cash

Standard Tests Miss Key Heart Risks—so Ask for This Blood Test if You’re Over 50

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 9:50pm

It’s easy to assume that if you’re feeling fine, your heart’s doing great. After all, you might be keeping up with your daily walks, eating your vegetables, spending time with your family and taking time to unwind after long days.

Maybe your doctor checked your cholesterol at your last routine checkup and gave you a reassuring nod, telling you that your total numbers look completely fine. But here’s a scary truth: standard lipid panels don’t always tell the full story. As we age, hidden cardiovascular risks can build up behind the scenes without ever showing up on a basic screen. That false sense of security can lead many of us to brush off subtle signs or skip crucial preventative steps, thinking our cardiovascular health is locked in.

Taking charge of your health after age 50 means looking deeper than surface-level results. You deserve a clear, accurate picture of your cardiovascular system so you can protect your heart, preserve your energy and stay active for decades to come.

When you go in for annual checkups, you expect your doctor to screen for everything that matters. Still, routine medical care doesn’t always automatically include cutting-edge marker analysis unless you know to ask for it. Thankfully, top medical experts reveal there’s a specific, often-overlooked lab work option that can reveal hidden dangers standard options completely miss.

Related: The ‘Healthy’ Cooking Oil a Cardiologist Never Uses To Make Eggs

Taking this single proactive step isn’t just about reading numbers on a report; it’s about gaining genuine peace of mind and taking direct control of your long-term longevity. Taking this step could save your life.

The Essential Cardiovascular Screen Your Doctor Might Not Order

When you head to your annual physical, your doctor typically orders a basic lipid panel to check your total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) “good” cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) “bad” cholesterol. While this provides a baseline, it leaves out crucial information. And one heart-related evaluation everyone over 50 should ask for is an Apolipoprotein B screening, commonly known as ApoB.

Related: ‘I’m an Oncologist—These Are 5 Everyday Habits I Never Do at Home’

“An ApoB test is a type of cholesterol test that your health care provider can order. It’s not part of the traditional cholesterol or lipid panel test and is ordered separately,” Dr. Alex A. Gyftopoulos, MD, a cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus, previously told Parade.

Why’s this specific marker so essential? Traditional lipid panels measure the total amount of cholesterol in your blood, but they don’t count the actual number of dangerous particles circulating. “ApoB, or apolipoprotein B, is a part of every different type of cholesterol in the body that’s been associated with the development of plaque in the arteries that can result in heart attacks and strokes,” Dr. Gyftopoulos said. “ApoB can give individuals a more accurate depiction of their heart disease risk.”

Because ApoB attaches to every single plaque-causing particle in your bloodstream, measuring it gives doctors a precise headcount of the particles threatening your arterial health. If you’re only getting a standard lipid screen, you might be living with a false sense of security while arterial plaque silently builds up.

What Results Mean for Your Long-Term Health

Skipping an ApoB evaluation means you could be missing vital pieces of your health puzzle. “For many people, the traditional lipid panel will provide enough information to make lifestyle and treatment decisions. But for some, ApoB can uncover an increased risk for heart disease and stroke that may otherwise be missed,” Dr. Gyftopoulos shared. “Now that ApoB testing is well validated and available, there’s little reason not to include it when evaluating the risk for cardiovascular disease.”

Understanding your numbers empowers you to make proactive choices before a sudden medical event happens. Normal ApoB levels generally range between 20 and 400 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). However, a level higher than 130 mg/dL is considered above optimal and flags an elevated risk for cardiovascular events.

“Knowing your risk for heart disease and stroke can help you and your health care provider decide on lifestyle changes and medications that can be used to reduce your risk,” Dr. Gyftopoulos noted.

If your ApoB evaluation comes back elevated, don’t panic. It simply serves as an early warning system to start making targeted changes. Dr. Gyftopoulos explained that if your numbers are high, the first line of defense is taking a close look at everyday lifestyle habits. If you use tobacco products, quitting immediately is critical. Committing to regular aerobic exercise, adopting a nutrient-dense diet and discussing potential cholesterol-lowering medications with your doctor can help bring your ApoB levels back into a safe zone.

Your health’s your most valuable asset, so don’t wait for symptoms to appear before advocating for your heart. Next time you schedule routine lab work, take control of your well-being by asking your physician to add an ApoB order to your chart.

1985 Harrison Ford Movie, Ranked Among Best Movies of the 1980s, Still Holds Up 41 Years Later

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 9:47pm

Harrison Ford’s 1985 film Witness marked a major career achievement for the actor and was also recognized as one of the best movies of the era.

More than four decades after its release, the neo-noir crime thriller continues to earn recognition, recently landing on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of 185 Favorite ’80s Movies.

As part of a curated ranking of the greatest movies of the 1980s, Ford’s movie secured the No. 37 spot with a 92 percent score on the Tomatometer, which represents the percentage of positive reviews from critics.

Rotten Tomatoes called it a “wonderfully entertaining thriller within an unusual setting,” praising the lead star’s impressive delivery through a “surprisingly emotive and sympathetic performance.”

Beyond the popular online review aggregation website for film and TV shows, Collider also described Witness as “one of the greatest thrillers ever made,” highlighting the film’s timeless appeal and enduring legacy among classic thrillers.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Peter Weir, the 112-minute movie explores identity, culture and human behavior when people are placed outside their comfort zone.

Starring Ford as Detective John Book, the film follows him as he helps an eight-year-old Amish boy named Samuel, who witnessed a drug-related murder in a Philadelphia train station.

Book, who was assigned to work on the case, realizes that the perpetrators are corrupt police officers who are trying to stop a corruption investigation.

As the case becomes increasingly complicated, he ends up going on the run and into hiding along with the young witness and his widowed mother.

At the time of the movie’s release, Witness garnered significant commercial success, with a domestic gross of more than $68 million against a reported production budget of $12 million.

Moreover, the crime thriller movie also earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Actor for Ford, marking his first and only Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Out of the eight nominations, Witness took home two awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

In an interview with Variety, Ford reflected on his experience filming Witness as well as his first Oscar nomination.

According to him, he really enjoyed playing Detective Book despite the production having a limited pre-production period.

“The role was fantastic,” he said. “I got to work with Peter Weir. What I loved about the movie was that we had a very, very short period of pre-production. Peter knew nothing of the Amish, so he went away to learn about the Amish, and I went away to research the police. And we came back together two weeks after that and discussed what we learned. And that was included in the rewrite. I love that kind of tension that we were under — we didn’t really have the script entirely figured out, so we left a couple of big holes in it when we started. I felt really good about the film we were making, and the film was quite a success.”

As for the Oscar nomination, Ford was “pleased” that his performance was recognized by the Academy.

1999 George Strait Hit, Written After a 'Failed' Answering Machine Message, Spent 4 Weeks at No. 1

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 9:36pm

There are some songs that are so simplistic in nature, it’s hard to believe it took as long as it did for them to be written. That’s the general consensus around George Strait‘s 1999 chart-topper “Write This Down.” The song, simple, sweet, and to the point, spent four weeks atop Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and remains beloved by country fans to this day.

The magic of ’90s songwriting is undeniable, and the way writers Dana Hunt Black and Kent Robbins crafted the song is nothing short of impressive. The simple tune tells the tale of a man who wants the woman he loves to always know how he feels, even when he isn’t actively saying it aloud. He encourages her to “take a little note” to remind her of his enduring affection—which, at its core, is deeply romantic. But the songwriting story behind the lyrics is just as enchanting.

How “Write This Down” Became a No. 1 Hit

Black and Robbins, who tragically died in 1997 before the song’s release, routinely wrote music together each week. According to an interview Black did with The Tennessean, the two were “best friends.” Black had already created a No. 1 hit with “Check Yes or No”—another Strait classic—before she began writing with Robbins, yet she still maintains she learned the most working alongside him.

As for making the legendary tune, Black told the outlet it was an experience she’d “never forget.”

“I walked in the door one night, and there was a message on my voicemail, and I listened to it, and it was Kent,” she recalled. “Kent and I were gonna write the next day, and Kent goes, ‘I’ve got a great idea, write this down—’ and then all of a sudden you hear ‘click.’ And I’m thinking, ‘What? Wait, he didn’t tell me the idea.'”

She grabbed a pen and paper, thinking maybe she had just missed part of the message, but sure enough, it was cut off. She didn’t call him back that night, but met up with him the following day. Sure enough, Robbins asked her if she liked his idea.

“I said, ‘I didn’t get the idea, Kent,’ and he goes, ‘Write this down—that’s the idea,'” she added.

Black revealed he had most of the concept mapped out, but the two sat down together to write the finalized lyrics. The first verse came easily, but the second was proving tougher. It wasn’t until the pair were at lunch, and Robbins got a call from his wife about a note on the refrigerator door he had missed, that Black was struck with inspiration. They fashioned the second verse around it, and the rest is history.

On the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, Strait boasts a record 44 No. 1 hit singles.

“I’ve always said I’m a melody guy,” Strait once explained to Cowboys & Indians of his ability to claim a chart-topper. “A great melody can sell a song the best. A great lyric with a lousy melody, maybe not so much, but a great lyric along with a great melody is obviously what you’re looking to create.”

There’s no doubt that “Write This Down” is a prime example of melody and lyrics coming together to create country magic.

Reba McEntire Reimagines 1983 Dolly Parton Ballad in Emotional Tribute at the Emmys

Mon, 09/14/2026 - 9:13pm

Country superstar Reba McEntire bravely took the stage at the 77th annual Emmy Awards to sing Appalachian Memories in honor of her beloved friend, Dolly Parton, who died at age 80 on August 25 following a private cancer battle.

On Monday, September 14, McEntire chose to honor her incredible career and their decades-long friendship by performing Parton’s 1983 classic about the rural area of Tennessee where she grew up. Ahead of the Emmy’s, McEntire’s Happy’s Place co-star, Melissa Peterman, hinted on social media that it was the “perfect” song choice and that she couldn’t wait to “see her honor Dolly in such a beautiful way.”

Parton’s Steel Magnolias co-star Sally Field, after winning an Emmy earlier in the evening, took the stage first, telling the audience, “If there are truly angels on earth, then we just lost one.” After speaking a bit about how much she loved working and knowing Parton, she introduced McEntire.

A touching photo of the two friends appeared on a giant screen while the country star walked onto the stage in a beautiful white, sparkling gown. McEntire made it through her beautiful rendition of one of Parton’s favorite tunes she wrote, but her voice cracked at the end as she said, “I love you, Dolly. So much.”

Inside Reba McEntire & Dolly Parton’s Sweet Friendship

McEntire’s tribute took place one year after she and Parton sat down to chat about their sweet friendship for a TalkShopLive event on September 25, 2025, as they promoted the release of Parton’s latest book, Star of the Show.

During the conversation, the duo talked about all that they’d bonded over during their friendship and amazing careers, from clothes to fans to their faith.

“I think our beliefs and everything we stand for are so similar,” McEntire told Parton. “That’s another thing that bonds us together.”

“I agree with that,” Parton replied, adding, “We know who we are and we know what we have to do, and we have to do it the way we understand it.”

The two legends met on September 17, 1977, when McEntire was making her debut at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, a story she told in her MasterClass session on country music.

She recalled, “So I walked in, and they said, ‘Reba, I’m terribly sorry, but the two songs that we said you could sing, you’re only going to get to sing one. I said, ‘Why?’ And they said, ‘Well, Dolly Parton just pulled in the parking lot, and she’s going to take one of your songs.”

McEntire couldn’t wait to meet one of her idols, and remembered, “She came walking in and I kinda backed up against the wall, and she had on the most beautiful black chiffon pantsuit with rhinestone butterflies on them — and her beautiful hair! I thought, ‘My gosh, that’s probably what an angel looks just like right there.'”

On the day Parton died, McEntire paid tribute with a social media post, sharing a series of throwback photos of them together and writing, “Well, I just got the news that my buddy Dolly passed onto the higher and greater side.”

View this post on Instagram

“Dolly, thank you for all the wonderful things you did for us here on earth,” she continued. “Your love, your music and you gave so much with your huge huge heart. There will never ever be another you. We will remember and cherish every memory and every note you ever played and sang.”

McEntire added, “Thank you, Lord, for Dolly. She’s gonna have a blast in heaven singing all her favorite songs with all her family and friends who have gone on before her. I’ll never forget the first time I met you and I’ll never forget our last conversation. I hold it with love in my heart. I will always love you.”
