Robert Kraft is defending his decision to give Ed Sheeran and his team an ultimatum: Drop Macklemore or don’t perform at Gillette Stadium.

According to the “Thrift Shop” artist, Kraft called Sheeran to tell him that Macklemore was not welcome to “perform in his stadium.”

“Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues,” Macklemore shared via Instagram on Monday, September 14. “Ed was in a f—ed up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before.”

The rapper added, “He couldn’t get past his public facing, ‘I don’t take sides.'”

Hours after news broke that Macklemore had been dropped from Sheeran’s tour, Kraft spoke with TMZ to double down on his decision.

“Gillette Stadium has a longstanding commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all guests and ensuring that events held at our venue do not provide a platform for hate speech,” he told the outlet.

The New England Patriots owner added, “Based on Macklemore’s recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community, we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross that line.”

While Kraft claimed his decision to rally other stadium owners was not about “denying anyone the right to advocate on their behalf,” he added, “that advocacy should not come at the expense of the Jewish community.”

“Much of my time and attention for the last decade has been focused on the fight against antisemitism and hate of all kinds, and I feel a responsibility to stand up when I believe that line has been crossed,” Kraft continued.

Following the story of seven generations of the same family, Gabriel García Márquez’s magnum opus, One Hundred Years of Solitude, is seen as one of the most important works of literature of its generation. The novel, which blends magical realism with historical events, catapulted its author to international renown, and in 1982, the Colombian scribe was honored with the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The book has received countless accolades, has been translated into over 40 languages, and, as of 2024, has sold over 50 million copies. Recently, it was also ranked in the number two spot of Collider’s list of the 10 greatest book masterpieces of the 20th century. 

“It’s a very nuanced and subjective debate, but if any book has a claim to the title of ‘most important work of Spanish-language literature since Cervantes’ Don Quixote,’ it’s Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude,” said the outlet, adding that it’s “arguably the greatest work of magical realism in the history of literature.”

The novel begins with Colonel Aureliano Buendía facing a firing squad and looking back at a childhood memory that drops the reader into the tiny village of Macondo, where time feels circular, and so many of the Buendía relatives share the same first names that a family tree at the beginning of the book isn’t just a tease into what’s to come, but a valuable resource. As you dive deeper into themes of predestination and isolation, you closely examine difficult truths of elitism in Latin America while simultaneously falling in love with the genre that has become synonymous with the author. 

In 2024, a 16-episode adaptation of the novel premiered on Netflix and, in line with García Márquez’s wishes, was not just filmed in Colombia but was led by Colombian artists, from set builders to the costume department to the music featured in the series.

As the British Invasion reshaped American pop music in the mid-1960s, a 19-year-old singer from Manchester joined The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and other U.K. acts at the top of the U.S. charts.

Wayne Fontana was still a teenager when he recorded “The Game of Love” with The Mindbenders. Released under the name Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, the infectious rock song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965 and became the biggest hit of Fontana’s career.

Born Glyn Geoffrey Ellis in Manchester, England, in 1945, Fontana adopted his stage name from Elvis Presley’s drummer D.J. Fontana.

“I started singing at school,” Fontana told Daily Express. “I would jump on stage and sing whether the other kids wanted to hear me or not.”

He formed the Mindbenders in the early 1960s with a lineup that included guitarist Eric Stewart, bassist Bob Lang, and drummer Ric Rothwell. The group signed with Fontana Records, a coincidence that made the singer’s chosen surname particularly fitting.

“A talent scout from London came to see us and we passed the audition,” Fontana recalled. “We got a recording contract, ended up in London and became Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. After ‘Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um’ we had a huge hit with ‘The Game Of Love’ in 1965, which got to number five and that led to appearances on radio and all the TV pop shows of the day including Top Of The Pops.”

Written by Clint Ballard Jr., the songwriter behind hits including “You’re No Good,” the track paired Fontana’s energetic lead vocal with a driving beat and a direct lyric comparing romance to a game everyone eventually learns to play.

The single first became a hit at home, reaching No. 2 on the U.K. Singles Chart.

Its American reception was even bigger. “The Game of Love” climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1965, replacing Freddie and the Dreamers’ “I’m Telling You Now.” Its success made Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders another Manchester act to capitalize on America’s fascination with British rock.

Fontana’s time with the group wouldn’t last much longer.

He left the Mindbenders in 1965 and pursued a solo career, scoring a U.K. hit with “Pamela Pamela.” The remaining band members continued as simply The Mindbenders, with Stewart taking over lead vocals.

They soon found another major hit of their own.

The Mindbenders recorded “A Groovy Kind of Love” in 1965, and the single reached No. 2 in both the United States and the U.K. Stewart later became a founding member of 10cc, extending the band’s connection to another chapter of British rock history.

More than six decades after its chart-topping run, “The Game of Love” remains Fontana’s defining recording. At just 19, he turned a two-and-a-half-minute British pop song into an American No. 1 and secured his place in the story of the British Invasion.

In 1970, a mysterious Detroit singer known simply as Rodriguez released his debut album Cold Fact. His socially conscious songwriting would earn comparisons to Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens, but in the United States, almost nobody was listening.

Then Rodriguez seemingly vanished.

What happened next became one of the strangest stories in rock history.

Born Sixto Rodriguez in Detroit, the singer released just two albums, Cold Fact and 1971’s Coming from Reality. Neither sold well in the United States, and his label dropped him. Rodriguez eventually walked away from the music business and returned to working jobs in Detroit, including construction and demolition.

But unbeknownst to Rodriguez, his music had found an enormous audience thousands of miles away.

Copies of his records made their way to South Africa, where Cold Fact became a platinum-selling success and Rodriguez was compared to contemporaries including Dylan and Stevens. His anti-establishment songs also resonated during the apartheid era and influenced South Africa’s music and protest culture.

NPR later described Rodriguez as possessing some of Dylan’s and Leonard Cohen’s lyrical quality, paired with a voice reminiscent of James Taylor.

There was just one problem: His South African fans thought he was dead.

With little reliable information available about the singer, increasingly bizarre rumors circulated. Some claimed Rodriguez had died of a drug overdose. Others said he had killed himself onstage.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez was very much alive and working in Detroit, completely unaware that he had become a superstar in South Africa.

The Guardian reported that South African music fan Stephen “Sugar” Segerman and journalist Craig Bartholomew Strydom eventually began searching for the singer. After months of false leads, they received an astonishing email from Rodriguez’s daughter asking whether they really wanted to know about her father.

Rodriguez finally learned about his extraordinary overseas fame in the late 1990s and traveled to South Africa, where he performed a series of concerts for thousands of fans who had spent years believing he was dead.

His remarkable rediscovery eventually became the subject of the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film chronicled the search to discover what had happened to Rodriguez and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2013. Rodriguez declined to attend the Oscars because he didn’t want to take attention away from the filmmakers.

After the documentary’s release, American audiences finally began discovering the singer who had spent decades as an unlikely legend on the other side of the world.

Rodriguez continued performing in later years and died on Aug. 8, 2023, at age 81.

For a musician whose first career had disappeared almost before it began, his second act was extraordinary: Rodriguez lived long enough to discover that while America had forgotten him, an entire generation elsewhere never had.

Halloween candy season is officially here and Haribo is giving gummy lovers a new reason to get excited.

The candy brand has released Crazy Skeletons, a spooky-season treat that puts a sweet-and-sour twist on the classic gummy. The skeleton-shaped candies are making their way to stores just in time for Halloween – but these aren’t your average gummies.

Each skeleton is split into two sides, with one side delivering a sweet flavor and the other bringing a sour kick, similar to the brand’s beloved Twin Snakes. The candies come in three colorful flavor combinations: Cherry & Kiwi, Strawberry & Blackcurrant, and Pineapple & Blood Orange.

The strawberry and black currant version features pink and dark purple coloring, while the cherry and kiwi combination comes in green and light purple. The pineapple and blood orange skeletons are yellow and orange, making the bag especially fitting for Halloween candy bowls.

Crazy Skeletons will be available nationwide this fall, but consumers have already spotted them at World Market, Target, and Five Below.

“Must get this!!! I love sweet & sour!!” one excited fan wrote on an Instagram post sharing the news.

Another added, “So excited. Already love the Twinsnakes.”

Of course, skeletons aren’t the only treat the beloved candy brand is rolling out this season. Sour Bats are back for Halloween 2026, giving fans another chance to stock up on the sour, bat-shaped candies for parties, trick-or-treaters or, let’s be honest, keeping in the candy bowl for themselves.

The Harry Potter x Haribo collection is also back, with new Draco Malfoy gummies featuring sour blood orange, green apple, and blackcurrant flavors, while the returning Harry Potter edition includes Harry and Hedwig pieces with flavors like caramel inspired by golden Butterbeer and sweet cherry lollipop inspired by Honeydukes.

Whether you’re team sweet, team sour, or simply can’t resist a spooky-shaped gummy, Haribo has plenty of reasons to make an extra trip down the Halloween candy aisle this year.

There are three things guaranteed in the world today: Death, taxes, and Jeopardy! being on. Believe it or not, the iconic game show has been on the air for over 60 years (though the modern incarnation we know and love technically debuted in 1984). The clue: “Bearing the name of an arthropod genus, this iconic vehicle first sold after WWII was designed by Italian engineer Corradino D’Ascanio.”

The answer: “The Vespa.”

Riggle ended the final DJ round in second place with $12,000, as Lee took the lead with $15,600, while Mayo finished third with $4,000. No one answered FJ correctly, so it came down to strategic wagers. Riggle wagered $3,999 (“What is the Spyder?) and dropped down to first place with $8,001, earning him the 3-day champion status in the Jeopardy! Season 43 premiere. Lee wagered almost double at $8,401 (“What is a VW bug”) and ended up slipping to second place, $802 less than Riggle’s final score, at $7,199. Mayo wagered everything on “What is… a beetle?” and ended in third place with $0.

Riggle will be back on Tuesday for attempt number 4.

Nutrition science is constantly evolving, which means foods people once thought were healthy can end up being terrible for you. Even dietitians experience this.

“I found my way into the profession because when I was young, I needed the support of a dietitian,” says Jessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers. “This is very common with people who work in the field.”

Cording grew up in the ‘90s when diet culture was everywhere. “Everything was low-fat, fat-free and ‘light,’ and we were told that was healthy,” she says. 

Cording stresses that “our perception of what’s healthy evolves,” including during her schooling to become a dietitian. But Cording notes that it’s OK to have less-healthy foods in your diet. “It’s all about context and overall diet patterns,” she tells Parade. “If something hits an itch, there can be room for that.”

The concern is when someone mistakenly thinks a certain food or foods are healthy and ends up relying too much on those foods, she explains. While food science will continue to change, Cording says there are certain foods that she once thought were healthy that definitely aren’t. These are the biggies she flagged.

These are the “healthy” foods the registered dietitian is calling out.

“When plant-based products first became a big thing, I remember thinking that the fake meat products were healthy simply because they weren’t animal-based,” Cording says.

But while some products designed to replace meat are more nutritious than others, she notes that many popular products are high in sodium and additives. “They can contribute to bloating,” Cording says.

These “meats” don’t necessarily have a positive effect on health. A 2022 randomized crossover trial, for example, had healthy adults eat two or more servings of plant-based meats per day for eight weeks, followed by two or more servings of animal meats per day for eight weeks. The researchers found that the results were “contrary to our hypothesis, since we expected relative improvements in biomarkers of inflammation from the plant-based meats.”

“My body never liked them,” Cording says, pointing out that she once relied heavily on them in her diet. “I remember coming to a place as a dietitian and thinking, ‘No wonder I wasn’t feeling OK.’ I wasn’t getting enough protein, iron, vitamin D or calcium.”

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends choosing low-fat dairy products for heart health, but fat-free cheese takes things a little farther.

“I grew up when fat phobia was alive and well,” Cording says. “I remember thinking we were supposed to eat fat-free cheese and fat-free everything.”

But she points out that fat-free cheese is heavily processed and isn’t satiating, leaving you feeling hungry not long after eating. These products also often have more thickeners and additives than full-fat cheese, she adds. “These cheeses don’t generally melt and stretch like regular cheese,” Cording says. “They’re not as satisfying and just don’t taste as good, which can lead to someone feeling deprived and more likely to overeat.”

There’s not a lot of data on fat-free cheese, but some research suggests that there may be some brain benefits of eating full-fat dairy. A January 2026 study published in the journal Neurology tracked 28,000 people for 25 years and found that adults without a genetic risk for Alzheimer’s who ate more full-fat cheese had an up to 17% lower risk of developing the disease.

Cording says that she used to view anything with sugar substitutes as a healthier choice. “Diet sodas with aspartame seemed like a healthier choice to me,” she tells Parade. While she stresses that some diet soda in moderation is likely fine, a growing body of research has linked artificial sweeteners with serious health conditions, including cancer.

In 2023, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified aspartame as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Other sugar-free sweeteners like xylitol have been linked to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. And a scientific review of 21 studies published in 2023 specifically linked high diet soda consumption to poor mental health, rheumatoid arthritis, hip fractures and accelerated cell aging, among other health issues.

Cording says she’s seen patients struggle with caffeine jitters, headaches and stomachaches with a regular diet soda habit. “Also, it can lend a health halo effect to a meal if someone feels they are saving calories,” she adds (a health halo means people perceive a food or meal as healthier overall than it truly is, often because of one specific factor—like lower calories—that overshadows other less healthy elements).

“Light yogurts have had such a health halo,” Cording says. But these products use a lot of artificial sweeteners, are very low in calories, and low in protein, she points out. Cording has seen patients struggle to regulate their appetite through the day when they rely heavily on light yogurt.

“They’re not super satiating, not great for brain function, or helpful for things women need, like hormone health support,” Cording says. “Sure, they’re low calorie but you get very little actual nutrients.” She adds that unsweetened Greek yogurt is “so much better.”

Frozen yogurt’s popularity has ebbed and flowed over the past few decades, and it’s currently experiencing a resurgence now.

“I used to think that frozen yogurt was a ‘healthy’ dessert,” Cording says. “But eventually I realized that, wait, there’s not that much nourishment happening with this.” Eating froyo can still lead to weight gain, Cording points out. One study that looked at yogurt, frozen yogurt and ice cream eaters in the U.S. found that those who ate frozen yogurt with and without toppings took in 214.6 and nearly 98 more calories a day compared to those who had “regular” yogurt.

Cording says she’s frequently seen her patients who love frozen yogurt overindulge. “It tends to be really easy to overeat and, when you add a lot of toppings, calorie-wise it can be similar to eating a whole meal,” she tells Parade.

Frozen yogurt does tend to have slightly more calcium than ice cream and may contain active bacterial cultures, but it’s still a dessert and should be viewed that way, she says.

Macklemore announced on Monday, September 14, that he was booted as an opening act on Ed Sheeran’s tour after shouting “Free Palestine” to a sold-out in New Jersey.

“I’m not sure how to start this. So I’m going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour,” the rapper shared via Instagram.

Macklemore—real name Benjamin Haggerty—added that his friendship with Sheeran “can’t change my responsibility to tell the truth about what happened.”

According to the artist, Robert Kraft — owner of the New England Patriots — “rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave [Sheeran] and ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.”

While the “Thrift Shop” artist received major backlash for his political statement, many celebrities rallied around him in a sign of support.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made the decision to pull their children out of their new school in the UK only two days after term began.

7-year-old Prince Archie and 5-year-old Princess Lilibet have spent the last few days getting to know their teachers and classmates at their new school after the Sussexes made the decision to move back to the UK and leave California behind.

But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reluctantly decided to withdraw Archie and Lilibet from their new school.

A source close to the couple told Hello! that security concerns were raised when heavy traffic between the school and the area where the Sussexes are living made it difficult for the vehicles conveying Archie and Lili to school to remain in convoy.

A friend of the couple said, “It’s a real shame, because they absolutely adored the school, the kids and their parents. It was perfect for them in every way and the children really enjoyed their time there.”

They went on, “They really wanted to make it work, but they had to make a difficult decision based on the fact that the team couldn’t make the school run operationally secure.”

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan emphasized to Hello! that the couple’s decision was not due to any problem with the school itself.

“The decision for the children to move school was taken following a discussion with the family’s security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements.

“The parents remain extremely grateful to all the teachers and staff for the love, care and effort they have shown their family. This decision should in no way be interpreted as a reflection on the school or the exceptional care the children have received there.”

Archie and Lilibet have now been enrolled in a new school in the area.

It is not officially known where Harry and Meghan have settled with their children in the UK but it is thought to be the Cotswolds,  a rural region in the U.K. famed for its rolling hills and honey-colored stone buildings.

Yesterday Meghan shared a post to Instagram containing our first glimpse of the Sussexes’ new life in the country they left six years ago, taking what the couple called a “freedom flight” to Canada before later moving to Montecito in California.

One video that features as part of the post shows Lilibet riding a bike while Archie runs alongside her. In another clip Harry and Meghan walk hand in hand along a laneway lined with woods that are just beginning to show the first signs of fall.

There’s also snippets of one of the children warming their feet by a roaring log fire, of Meghan splashing in a puddle wearing wellies, and of Harry, Archie, and Lilibet fishing from a rowing boat.

It was reported today that Meghan was spotted driving an SUV near the rumored location of her and Harry’s new home.

Harry and Meghan have not been in touch with Prince William and Kate Middleton since moving back to the UK. It is thought that the two couples have not been in contact since around the publication of Harry’s memoir Spare in 2023.

When it comes to applying makeup, it’s easy to fall into a routine. Personally, I’ll sometimes go years without changing anything about the way I do my makeup.

That said, as we get older, it’s often wise to make adjustments to our makeup routines—especially when it comes to products like blush. In fact, people with mature skin commonly make a few mistakes when it comes to applying blush. But fortunately, these mistakes are painless to remedy.

To learn more, we turned to makeup pro Shannon Spence, a makeup artist and prosthetic artist for editorial, bridal and film. She has worked in the makeup department for TV productions including The Last of Us, Murderbot, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

According to Spence, the most common blush blunder that she sees mature women make “is an honest mistake to make and a really understandable one.”

To better understand what kind of blush people with mature skin should be using, we also spoke with two other makeup artists: Shirley Pinkson Mañas, Head of Education for e.l.f. Beauty and co-founder of Well People, and Aisha Massac, founder of Iman’s Custom Faces and a licensed esthetician.

“The most common blush mistake that I see women with mature skin make is where they place their blush,” Spence tells Parade.

“Most of us were taught to smile and pop the color right onto the apples of our cheeks because that’s where our face naturally flushes,” she further explains. “As the face naturally settles and loses elasticity with age, the apples of our cheeks fall as well. For mature skin, that can become tricky.”

According to Spence, many people apply blush on the apples of their cheeks while they’re smiling—but the older you get, the more important it is to stop smiling while you put on your blush.

“When you smile, the apples lift temporarily, so you place the color there, and then the moment your face relaxes, [the blush] settles lower than you were aiming,” Spence tells Parade. “The placement of blush becomes lower and drags the face downward and that downward weight is what reads as tired or aged.”

“Instead of putting color on the apples, place blush a bit higher above the apples of the cheek and blend upward and outward towards the hairline,” Spence explains. “Applying with a relaxed expression, facing forward towards a mirror is how you can place it accurately and high.”

Again, make sure to keep the face relaxed and not in a smile as you swipe on your blush.

“Once that base placement is on, building up the color will be much easier, and it immediately lifts the face, creating a more youthful appearance,” Spence says. “This small adjustment works so well because when the color sits higher on the cheekbone, it draws the eye upward and reads lifted instead of weighed down.”

Though many people gravitate toward powdered blush, Spence advises against powders for aging skin. Instead, she is a big proponent of cream blushes.

“When I work on mature skin, I love using cream blushes,” she says. “I prefer using creams because they melt into the skin and give it a lit from within flush without sitting in fine lines the way that powders can.”

Additionally, as we age, it’s common for skin to become drier and more dehydrated—and since a cream blush can be moisturizing, it can help hydrate the skin’s appearance.

“Cream-based makeup softens the look of dry, dehydrated skin,” Pinkson Mañas tells Parade. “Choose formulations that have skin-loving benefits that leave skin looking and feeling hydrated.”

Massac adds that if you really want to use a powder on your face, you should do so “sparingly.”

“Do not powder cheeks, especially,” she stresses. “If you powder the whole face or more than select areas, you will highlight the fine lines and wrinkles and potentially look older.”

MERIT

One of Spence’s favorite cream blushes for older skin is the MERIT Flush Balm, a cream tint that you can apply directly to your skin. The product is vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free and comes in around a dozen shades—plus, it doubles as a tinted lip balm!

“I apply it with my fingers,” Spence says of cream blush. “And then, if I want to diffuse the color more, I’ll go over it with a face brush.”

More details have been revealed surrounding the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards — and the broadcast itself.

For those not familiar with Southern California politics, there’s a buzzy election this year for mayor of Los Angeles. And on Monday, September 14, candidate Nithya Raman‘s new political ad — voiced by the one and only Bob Odenkirk — is set to air right before the local NBC affiliate’s broadcast of “TV’s biggest night,” according to Deadline.

“For your consideration: A mayor who loves LA as much as we do,” the two-time Emmy winner, 63, says in the opening of Raman’s clever 30-second spot.

The “FYC” theme is fitting for an awards show TV viewers have been waiting for all summer long. Raman, 45, who currently serves on LA’s City Council, is running against Mayor Karen Bass, who is seeking reelection.

“Los Angeles has so many eager, skilled people who want to work in our industry,” Odenkirk told Deadline on Monday. “We deserve a city and leaders who fight to achieve the conditions to make that work happen.”

On Sunday, September 13, Variety reported that New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson — who also happens to be Emmys host Mariska Hargitay’s buddy — will appear via a pre-tape at the start of the telecas.

The NBA champion, 30, will reportedly appear at the very start of the show as part of a pre-taped number. Hargitay will then continue that performance live on stage, with dancers and other performers. That will then lead to Hargitay’s opening host monologue. Find out more here.

Long before meal delivery apps and drive-thru dinners became the answer to the nightly question of what to feed the hungry family, there was a different option: the school-night supper. These weren’t elaborate meals that required a dozen specialty ingredients or hours of prep in the kitchen. They were inexpensive, filling dinners designed to feed everyone at the table without blowing the grocery budget.

If you grew up anytime between the 1950s and the 1990s, some of those dinners probably still bring back nostalgic memories. There was meatloaf with mashed potatoes, Salisbury steak swimming in gravy, casseroles held together by a trusty can of condensed soup, and maybe even the occasional TV dinner when Mom needed a night off or had a PTA meeting.

They may seem old-fashioned now, but there’s something surprisingly timely about the way families cooked back then. Expensive ingredients were stretched with pasta, rice, potatoes and bread. Canned and frozen foods saved time and money, and leftovers weren’t something to avoid; they were often the starting point for tomorrow night’s dinner.

With grocery prices taking a bigger bite out of family budgets these days, some old-school tricks are worth considering. Better yet, plenty of the dinners themselves still hold up. Here are five retro school-night suppers you can put on the table for about $10 or less today.

These are the five school-night staples you’ll want to add to your weeknight dinner rotation.

Few dinners say midcentury America quite like tuna noodle casserole. The dish became a family staple during the casserole boom of the 1950s, when inexpensive canned and packaged foods made it possible to get a filling dinner into the oven quickly.

The basic formula hasn’t changed much because it doesn’t need to. Combine a bag of cooked egg noodles with two cans of tuna, a can of cream of mushroom soup and some frozen peas. If there’s room in the budget, add a little shredded cheddar, and finish the casserole with breadcrumbs, crushed potato chips or Parmemsan cheese before baking until hot and bubbly.

Depending on the brands you buy, the whole casserole should come in at roughly $6 to $8 and easily feed a family of four. It’s creamy, cheesy, crunchy and familiar enough that it doesn’t feel nearly as dated as its name suggests.

Sloppy Joes have managed to do something many vintage dinners haven’t: They never really went away. There’s still something undeniably satisfying about piling saucy ground beef onto a soft hamburger bun, especially when dinner needs to happen fast.

Brown a pound of ground beef with some diced onion, then make the sauce yourself instead of buying it premade in a can. Tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and a little brown sugar can turn inexpensive pantry staples into that familiar sweet and tangy Sloppy Joe flavor.

Skip the bag of frozen fries too. Cut a couple of russet potatoes into wedges or fries, toss them with a little oil and salt, and bake them until browned and crispy. Depending on the price of ground beef, the entire dinner can land under the $10 mark and gives you a much more complete meal than sandwiches alone.

Chicken à la king sounds fancy enough to serve at a dinner party, but that’s part of its retro charm. The creamy chicken dish was once a reliable way to turn a relatively small amount of chicken into dinner for the whole family.

The classic version combines cooked chicken with peas, carrots and sometimes mushrooms or pimientos in a creamy roux-based sauce. Spoon it over toast instead of buying expensive pastry shells, and you’ve got a warm, filling dinner using mostly inexpensive ingredients.

It’s also a great place to use whatever chicken is most affordable at the grocery store or leftover cooked chicken you already have. With frozen mixed vegetables and sandwich bread rounding out the meal, you should be able to put four servings on the table for roughly $7 to $9. It may have an old-fashioned name, but creamy chicken over toast is still a pretty easy sell on a school night.

Don’t confuse this with traditional Hungarian goulash. The American version is the wonderfully unfussy combination of ground beef, elbow macaroni and tomato sauce that generations of families have relied on when they needed to stretch a pound of meat.

Brown a pound of ground beef with a small chopped onion, add a can of tomato sauce and some diced tomatoes, and build out the flavor with a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Stir in cooked elbow macaroni, and you’ve got a big skillet of hearty comfort food without needing a long ingredient list.

This one will likely come close to the $10 ceiling, particularly when ground beef prices are high, but store-brand pasta and tomato sauce help keep the total in check. It also illustrates exactly why these old-school dinners worked so well: A pound of beef becomes enough food for an entire family once you add an inexpensive box of pasta.

Sometimes the simplest dinner is the one everybody wants. A bowl of tomato soup with a hot grilled cheese sandwich may bring back memories of childhood lunches, snow days and school nights, but there’s a reason the combination has survived.

You don’t need artisanal sourdough or three kinds of cheese to make it good. A loaf of sandwich bread, sliced American or cheddar cheese, butter and a couple of cans of condensed tomato soup are enough to feed a family of four. If you’ve already got butter in the refrigerator, the entire dinner can easily come in at about $6 to $8.

It’s also proof that a budget dinner doesn’t have to feel like a compromise. Crispy, buttery bread, melted cheese and hot tomato soup still hit the spot decades later. Some school-night suppers are probably best left in the past, but this is one vintage dinner that never really left.

Some dinners become classics for a reason. These school-night staples were built around simple ingredients, smart ways to stretch a grocery budget and getting a filling meal on the table without a lot of fuss or time spent making it. Decades later, that’s a formula that still works. And if dinner for the whole family costs around $10, that’s one old-fashioned idea we’re more than happy to bring back.

A casual joke at Warren Zevon’s home in Venice, California, turned into the song that would follow him for the rest of his career.

Zevon wrote “Werewolves of London” with LeRoy Marinell and Waddy Wachtel in 1975, reportedly finishing the basic song in about 15 minutes. What began as an exercise in absurdity eventually appeared on 1978’s Excitable Boy and became Zevon’s biggest, and only, Top 40 hit.

The idea arrived through an unlikely source.

Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers had watched the 1935 movie Werewolf of London and suggested Zevon write a song with a similar title. Marinell quickly came up with the distinctive guitar figure, while Zevon and Wachtel helped build a succession of increasingly bizarre lyrics around it.

“I try to tell people that aside from the fact that we got the idea for the song from a suggestion by Phil Everly, ‘Werewolves of London,’ from my point of view as a co-writer, is a rip-off of Hunter S. Thompson,” Zevon told Rolling Stone. “I can’t imagine why people don’t see that. And I must tell you that Hunter doesn’t see it, because Hunter’s too modest. He’s a real gentleman.”

The three songwriters weren’t initially convinced they had created anything important.

Instead, they treated “Werewolves of London” as a novelty, filling it with images of a sharply dressed werewolf wandering through London, eating Chinese food, and looking for trouble. Its humor culminates in the unforgettable refrain punctuated by Zevon’s howling “ah-hooo.”

Getting that deceptively simple song onto a record proved considerably harder than writing it.

Wachtel later recalled that the musicians struggled to capture the right groove during the recording sessions. Numerous combinations of players were tried before Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood and John McVie supplied the drums and bass heard on the finished version.

“I sent everyone away, ’cause I really wanted to work up a great [guitar] solo,” Wachtel later recalled. “I got my sound set up, got a nice bottle of vodka. I said to Dennis Kirk [who helped engineer], ‘Okay, run the tape!’ The solo came up; I played it. I looked at Dennis, I played it back and said, ‘That’s it!’ I didn’t even get to open the vodka! Then I put a harmony on it, and it was finished. The solo took as long as it takes to hear it.”

Producer Jackson Browne, an early champion of Zevon’s music, also recognized the song’s potential. Browne had previously helped bring attention to Zevon’s songwriting and produced his 1976 self-titled album.

Released as a single in 1978, “Werewolves of London” climbed to No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became Zevon’s highest-charting single and helped push Excitable Boy into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.

“It sold enough for me to make another record but didn’t do extraordinarily well,” Zevon said in an interview with Elsewhere. “Then again none of my records do. For me, hit records were an anomaly – and I don’t really mean ‘they,’ I mean ‘it.'”

The song’s life extended far beyond its original chart run. Its distinctive piano-and-guitar pattern later became part of Kid Rock’s 2008 hit “All Summer Long,” which also incorporated elements of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Forty-eight years after its release, “Werewolves of London” remains instantly recognizable. A song tossed together in roughly 15 minutes became Zevon’s signature hit, proving that one of rock’s most enduring creations can sometimes begin with little more than a movie title, a guitar riff, and a very strange joke.

The Beatles released the 1963 hit song “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which not only became one of the band’s defining songs but was also ranked among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Based on the ranking released by the publication, the list celebrates songs widely regarded for their lasting impact and influence on music.

With this, The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” ranked at No. 15, which the publication described as “an irresistibly erotic come-on framed as a chaste, bashful request.”

Continuing the song’s legacy, Rolling Stone later released a separate list highlighting the 100 Greatest Beatles Songs, with “I Want to Hold Your Hand” landing at No. 2.

Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the duo created what would become one of the band’s most iconic songs at Jane Asher’s house, where McCartney’s then-girlfriend lived.

“We wrote a lot of stuff together, one on one, eyeball to eyeball,” the late John Lennon told Playboy magazine in 1980, as cited by Performing Songwriter, adding, “Like in ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand,’ I remember when we got the chord that made the song.”

It was in that London cellar that Lennon and McCartney had a eureka moment while playing the piano together, which led to the creation of the iconic song.

“We were in [Paul’s then-girlfriend] Jane Asher’s house, downstairs in the cellar playing on the piano at the same time,” he said. “And we had, ‘Oh you-u-u/ got that something…’ And Paul hits this chord [E minor] and I turn to him and say, ‘That’s it!’ I said, ‘Do that again!’ In those days, we really used to absolutely write like that—both playing into each other’s noses.”

Initially released as a standalone single in the U.K. in 1963, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” was later featured as the opening track on the Beatles’ 1964 U.S. album Meet the Beatles!

At the time, Beatlemania continued to sweep the U.S. after the song became a massive commercial hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and staying there for seven weeks.

Moreover, it was also the quartet’s first U.S. No. 1 single and became their first song to reach No. 1 in both the U.K. and U.S. charts.

According to McCartney, it was the song that “changed everything.”

“Luckily, we didn’t know what America was — we just knew our dream of it — or we probably would have been too intimidated,” he told Rolling Stone in 1987.

More than six decades after The Beatles released the song, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” remains a timeless classic that continues to be enjoyed by generations of listeners.
