Award-Winning 2017 Celeste Ng Novel Ranked a 'Best Book of the Decade' by Goodreads
American novelist Celeste Ng moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio, when she was only ten. As an adult, she reflected on her upbringing there and was inspired to write a novel that took place in the city. She wanted to explore the ways the town was “unusual” and dive into the communities there.
Additionally, Ng was inspired by interracial adoption and the ways in which that touches class, race, and parenthood. On the issue, Ng said, “Many adoptions today are transracial, which raises really complicated questions about how we handle and talk about race—and racial bias—in America.”
The result of all of this inspiration became her 2017 novel, Little Fires Everywhere.
Little Fires Everywhere was a massive success, both critically and commercially. The novel hit the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list upon release in 2017, and spent more than two years on different hardback and paperback bestseller rankings. It was the Goodreads Choice Award Winner that year for Favorite Fiction. On top of all of this, Hollywood Star Reese Witherspoon chose the book for her coveted Reese’s Book Club.
View this post on InstagramLittle Fires Everywhere has had a lasting impact in its almost ten years post-publication. On Goodreads, the novel was included on their list of the “Biggest Hits of the Last Decade” among the likes of Where the Crawdads Sing and The Nickel Boys.
In addition to selecting the novel for her book club, Witherspoon executive produced and starred in an adaptation of the book for Hulu alongside Kerry Washington. When the mini-series was released in 2020, it was the most watched program on the platform for over two months.
Little Fires Everywhere opens with a literal fire: the Richardson family home in Shaker Heights, Ohio, is burning down, and all suspicion points to Izzy, the family’s youngest daughter. The fire becomes the talk of the town and the main subject of the community’s gossip for the following summer. When Mia Warren, an eccentric artist and single mother, moves in with her teenage daughter, Pearl, the pair shake up more than the Richardson family could have bargained for. Little Fires Everywhere grapples with adoption, secrets, all interwined in a domestic drama.
Little Fires Everywhere and other works by Celeste Ng are available wherever books are sold.

1984 NBC Show, Ranked Among ‘Best TV Sitcoms of All Time,’ Still Holds Up 34 Years Later
Thirty-four years after NBC’s Night Court concluded its nine-season run, the beloved comedy series has retained its timeless appeal and connection with viewers, earning a spotlight among the “best TV sitcoms of all time.”
Celebrating the evolution and cultural impact of some of the industry’s most remarkable and iconic sitcoms, Rolling Stone ranked Night Court No. 97.
The publication described the show as an “underrated utility player of NBC’s Eighties comedy empire,” praising its place in the network’s successful comedy lineup.
Premiering in January 1984, the classic legal comedy sitcom entertained viewers with the chaotic and often hilarious workings of a Manhattan municipal courtroom during the graveyard shift.
The series starred Harry Anderson as Harry T. Stone, a young and eccentric yet compassionate night court judge.

He was surrounded by the highly narcissistic prosecutor Dan Fielding, portrayed by John Larroquette, and the gentle giant and deeply sweet-natured courtroom bailiff Bull Shannon, played by Richard Moll. Together, they tried to maintain order while navigating the city’s overnight court proceedings.
During Night Court’s run, the NBC show earned strong viewership and even made the Top 10 Nielsen-rated shows of 1986 and 1987, with the Anderson-led sitcom ranking No. 7 with a 23.2 rating, narrowly behind CBS’ 60 Minutes at 23.3.
In a 1989 interview with CNN’s Larry King, Anderson said he was surprised by the sitcom’s massive success.
“The odds of the show getting on the air and staying on for six years and we’ve just been signed for two more years; that makes it eight years,” the actor said, adding, “The odds against that the California lottery doesn’t beat that. So it’s pretty remarkable.”
Over the course of the classic sitcom’s run, Night Court accumulated multiple recognitions, including John Larroquette’s historic achievement at the Primetime Emmy Awards, where he won four straight awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor from 1985 to 1988.
The impressive milestone led him to ask not to be considered for another nomination in 1989 to have more freedom to pursue other roles.
Adding to the list were the three technical wins, including Outstanding Editing for a Multi-Camera Series in 1987, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy Series or a Special in 1989, and Outstanding Lighting Direction for a Comedy Series, all at the Primetime Emmy Awards.
In 1992, Night Court officially bid goodbye, airing its two-part series finale.

1956 Rock 'n' Roll Song, Started in a New York Apartment, Launched a 13-Year-Old's Career
In 1956, a 13-year-old singer named Frankie Lymon helped turn a early rock and roll song into an international hit. “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” became the breakout record for Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, launching the young singer’s career and eventually becoming a hit for several other artists.
The story behind the song began in a Washington Heights apartment building in New York City, where Teenagers bassist Sherman Garnes lived. The group, then known as the Premiers, would rehearse in the building’s hallways.
In late 1955, a resident of the building gave the group some love letters he had received from his girlfriend. One of the letters included the line “Why do birds sing so gay?” The phrase stuck with Herman Santiago, who worked it into a song he was already developing.
Santiago had been writing songs around a 1-6-2-5 chord progression and adjusted the melody and harmony to suit Lymon’s high voice. The record was originally called “Why Do Birds Sing So Gay?”
The Teenagers auditioned the song for producer George Goldner, the owner of Gee Records, in late 1955. Goldner took notice of Lymon’s voice during the audition and suggested that he handle the lead vocals.
“Why Do Fools Fall in Love” was released on January 10, 1956, as Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers’ debut single. It quickly established Lymon as one of the era’s most recognizable young singers.
The early rock and roll song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and No. 6 on the pop singles chart. It also topped the U.K. Singles Chart in July 1956, giving the 13-year-old singer a remarkable start to his career.
The song’s songwriting credits also got a little messy over the years. Early releases credited Lymon, Santiago and Goldner, but later releases listed only Lymon and Goldner. After Morris Levy acquired Goldner’s interest in Gee Records, Goldner’s name was eventually replaced by Levy’s.
The dispute dragged on for years before credits were awarded to Jimmy Merchant and Santiago in 1992. That decision didn’t stick, though. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit later overturned it, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear another appeal.
“Why Do Fools Fall in Love” continued to find new audiences through cover versions. The Diamonds released their version in 1956, the Beach Boys recorded it in 1964 and Diana Ross released a cover in 1981.
Ross’ version became another major hit, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart and No. 6 on the Hot Soul Singles chart. It also reached No. 4 in the U.K.
The Beach Boys’ recording was released as the B-side to “Fun, Fun, Fun” and later appeared on their 1964 album Shut Down Volume 2. Their version reached No. 120 on the Billboard chart.

How To Get Rid of Fire Ant Mounds: Why Broadcast Baiting Works
Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
Knocking out a visible fire ant mound can feel like a victory, until another one appears a few yards away. That happens because fire ants rarely exist as a single isolated mound. Heavily infested lawns may contain several colonies, some of which have multiple queens. Eliminating only the mound you see may leave other colonies untouched or allow new ants to move into the open territory.
For this reason, the University of Georgia Extension recommends a lawn-wide approach for larger infestations: broadcast a fire ant bait across the treated area, then address troublesome individual mounds that remain.
Orkin also recommends this approach, as fire ants can be difficult to control. In many cases, their colonies are large, extend deep underground and contain multiple queens. Here’s why broadcast baiting can be so effective—and how it differs from simply treating visible mounds.
If fire ant mounds keep appearing throughout your yard, an Orkin Pro can inspect the property, identify the extent of the infestation and develop a treatment plan rather than treating each mound as a separate problem.
For lawns with numerous fire ant colonies, one of the most effective strategies is to broadcast fire ant bait across the entire affected area and then treat individual problem mounds as needed. University of Georgia Extension calls this the “Two-Step Method.” The first step is applying bait over the lawn. After giving the bait time to work, remaining nuisance mounds can receive a faster-acting individual treatment.
That approach is especially useful across medium and large areas because it targets colonies homeowners may not have noticed yet.
Fire Ant Strategy
How It Works
Best Use
Broadcast Bait
Spreads bait across the lawn for foraging ants to collect
Multiple colonies or larger yards
Individual Mound Bait
Places bait near a specific active mound
Isolated colonies
Mound Drench
Applies liquid treatment directly to a mound
Faster control of specific problem mounds
Two-Step Treatment
Broadcast bait followed by targeted mound control
Larger or persistent infestations
How Does Broadcast Fire Ant Bait Work?Fire ant bait is designed to be carried into the colony rather than killing workers immediately on contact. Foraging ants collect small bait particles and bring them back underground, where the material can spread among other colony members.
University of Georgia Extension explains that fresh bait is carried into the colony and shared among its members. The university recommends applying bait when workers are actively foraging so they are more likely to find and collect it.
Depending on the active ingredient, some products eventually affect the queens or interfere with the development of the colony. That colony-level effect is what separates baiting from simply spraying the ants visible on the lawn.
Orkin similarly explains that ant baits use slow-acting ingredients so workers have time to carry the material back and share it with other ants, including queens.
Why Isn’t Treating Every Fire Ant Mound Enough?Individual mound treatment can work well when only a few colonies are present. The problem comes when a yard contains dozens of mounds—including colonies that haven’t produced an obvious mound yet.
University of Georgia Extension recommends individual mound treatments primarily for smaller areas with relatively few colonies. The approach requires more labor and monitoring when fire ants are widespread, and reinvasion can occur after individual colonies are removed.
Fire ant biology contributes to the problem. Orkin notes that colonies can contain multiple queens and that surviving queens and workers may allow colonies to recover. Removing one colony can also leave space for another colony to occupy later.
When mounds are spread across a lawn instead of confined to one location, Orkin can develop a broader ant-control strategy based on the species, nesting areas and conditions around the property.
When Should You Apply Fire Ant Bait?Timing can make a huge difference. Why? Because fire ant workers need to be actively searching for food when broadcast bait is applied.
University of Georgia Extension recommends applying broadcast baits during warm, dry conditions when ants are actively foraging, commonly during spring and fall. The university also advises avoiding bait applications immediately before or after irrigation or rainfall.
Another Extension recommendation is to test the activity before treating. Place a small amount of bait near an active mound and watch for 10 to 30 minutes. If workers begin carrying it away, they are actively foraging.
Note: Always follow the product label for application rates, weather restrictions and where the product can legally be used.
Should You Disturb a Fire Ant Mound Before Baiting?Generally, no. When using bait, disturbing a mound can interfere with normal foraging behavior.
University of Georgia Extension recommends spreading bait around an active mound rather than placing it directly on top and specifically advises not disturbing the mound before baiting.
Broadcast applications work differently because the bait is distributed across the lawn where workers naturally search for food. For individual mound treatments such as drenches or granules, application instructions vary by product. Following the pesticide label is essential.
How Long Does Fire Ant Bait Take To Work?Baits aren’t designed to produce the instant effect that homeowners see from a contact spray. Some products begin controlling colonies within days, while insect growth regulator baits may take considerably longer to reach their full effect.
University of Georgia Extension notes that some broadcast fire ant baits can work within days, while others may require a month or more. That slower action is intentional. Foraging workers need enough time to collect the bait and carry it throughout the colony. So remember: Visible activity shortly after baiting doesn’t necessarily mean the treatment failed.
How Do You Keep Fire Ants From Taking Over the Lawn Again?Even an effective treatment doesn’t permanently prevent new colonies from entering a yard. University of Georgia Extension warns that broadcast bait does not stop reinvasion from surrounding property or newly mated queens. Fire ant populations can eventually recover when treatment stops.
That makes monitoring important.
Orkin’s ant-control process includes inspecting for ant species, locating trails and nesting sites, applying targeted treatments and monitoring for renewed activity. The company describes ant management as an ongoing process rather than a single treatment.
For a Southern lawn with several active mounds, that’s worth considering. Treating the mound closest to the patio may solve the immediate nuisance, but controlling fire ants across the property means addressing the colonies you don’t see as well.
If fire ants continue spreading across your lawn, request a free quote from Orkin. An Orkin Pro can inspect the property and recommend a treatment program designed around the extent of the infestation.
1983 Song, Written on a Napkin, Ranked Journey’s Greatest Hot 100 Hit
The Los Angeles Times just took on the difficult task of ranking all 25 of Journey’s Billboard Hot 100 hits, and its No. 1 song surprisingly is not “Don’t Stop Believin’.” The beloved 1981 anthem didn’t even crack the outlet’s Top 3, landing at No. 4. Instead, the newspaper crowned 1983’s “Faithfully” as peak Journey.

View this post on InstagramReleased in April 1983, “Faithfully” appears on Journey’s Frontiers album. The band’s keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, wrote it, and it offers the perfect showcase for frontman Steve Perry’s versatile vocals. Peaking at No. 12 on the all-genre chart, the song spent 16 weeks on the survey and helped propel its smash parent album to No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
The Times’ argument for elevating “Faithfully” to the pinnacle spot is its bittersweet quality. No, this wasn’t the first rock song about life on the road, but it was perhaps the most emotionally generous. Perry sings from the perspective of a musician who understands the toll touring can take on a relationship, both for the person leaving and the one left behind. But he isn’t debating whether he’ll leave; he’s already decided to hit the road again. And that, the Times argued, is where the song’s emotional power lies.
“In all honesty, it’s a road song,” said Cain, who, per American Songwriter, wrote the first lines of the ballad on a napkin while snowing in after a show.
“I started thinking about me and my relationship, and I was missing my new wife at the time, and we were having trouble,” Cain told the outlet. “There were early signs that we would probably split apart. I knew I needed to do something that said, ‘I love you, and whether or not you want to leave me, here it is,’ so I got on the bus, and there was this gray sky, and the moon was doing some kind of crazy stuff in the clouds, and it looked like the midnight sun. Then I wrote, ‘Highway run / Into the midnight sun / Wheels go round, and round / You’re on my mind.’”
With the foundation done, Cain dozed off, only to revisit the song the following morning and finish it in about 30 minutes. By the time Journey was recording Frontiers, “Faithfully” was ready to go. The band reportedly cut it in just three takes, adding a tender counterpoint to harder-rocking tracks such as “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Chain Reaction” and “Edge of the Blade.”
The song has remained a fixture of Journey’s setlist, with Arnel Pineda now handling the lead vocals. But according to Cain, he had trouble getting others to make the song their own. He wanted to get it on the big screen or even covered.
“I can’t get it covered,” said Cain, who once offered the song to Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill. “I guess they’re afraid of the original. It is a great song.”
Since then, however, the song has found its way into the repertoires of artists ranging from Miley Cyrus to rising country singer Heath Sanders. The song’s continued life in the hands of other artists reminds us how far a great ballad can travel.

1972 Country Song, Recorded by a 13-Year-Old, Went to No. 1 and Launched a Hall of Fame Career
In the summer of 1972, Tanya Tucker was 13 years old.
She walked into Columbia’s studio in Nashville to record her debut album. She had just had a Top 10 hit.
“Delta Dawn” had been released in May 1972, when she was 13. The song peaked at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and No. 3 on Canada’s RPM Country Singles chart. Columbia tried to downplay her age. It didn’t work.
Producer Billy Sherrill needed a second single that proved she wasn’t a novelty.
He found it on the same sessions. The song was “Love’s the Answer,” written by Emily Mitchell and Norro Wilson, from her debut album Delta Dawn, which was released in September 1972 and peaked at No. 32 on Billboard’s Hot Country LPs chart.
Tucker also recorded “Love’s the Answer” at 13. It was released as a single in October 1972, just after her 14th birthday on October 10, 1958, with “The Jamestown Ferry” on the B-side.
It was bigger than her first hit. At least in Canada.
“Love’s the Answer” reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and went to No. 1 on RPM’s Country Tracks chart in Canada. “Delta Dawn” had peaked at No. 3 there.
Tucker was born Tanya Denise Tucker in Seminole, Texas, the youngest of three children of Beau and Juanita Tucker. Her early childhood was spent in Willcox, Arizona, where she sang at the Arizona State Fair. Her demo, sent by songwriter Dolores Fuller to Sherrill at CBS, got her signed to Columbia.
She never left. At 14 she had her first U.S. No. 1 with “What’s Your Mama’s Name” in spring 1973, followed by another No. 1 hit with “Blood Red and Goin’ Down.” She moved to MCA for “Lizzie and the Rainman,” made the outlaw turn with TNT in 1978, returned on Capitol in the late 80s with “Strong Enough to Bend,” won Best Country Album and Best Country Song for 2019’s While I’m Livin’, and released Sweet Western Sound with Brandi Carlile in 2023.
She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on October 22, 2023. A 60-year career that started when she was 13, recording a No. 1 between middle school classes.

1967 Folk Pop Song, Covered by Barbara Streisand, Is Still a Powerful Hit 40 Years Later
Laura Nyro may not have been too well-known for her own recorded songs, but she was known as a young songwriter who wrote a 1967 track that would be a hit for singer and actor Barbra Streisand three years later.
“Stoney End” was one of the tracks 19-year-old Nyro developed in the mid-to-late 1960s. She had found success as a songwriter, with her tracks becoming bigger hits for other artists, such as “Wedding Bell Blues” and “And When I Die.” Nyro released her 1967 folk-pop song as part of her debut album, More Than a New Discovery, but it failed to gain chart attention.
Many interpreted her song as being about a young woman who spends the night with a man. She becomes heartbroken when the man leaves after doing the deed and yearns to seek comfort from her mother. “Stoney End” reportedly refers to having gone down the wrong path.
According to SongFacts, Nyro also used the Bible as a reference and wrote the lyric, “I was raised on the good book, Jesus.” Her record label, Verve, was uncomfortable with the Bible reference but was afraid of facing backlash over changing it. Nyro changed the lyric when it was released as a single.
The record label wasn’t the only one that was confused by the lyrics. Streisand released a cover of “Stoney End” in 1970 for her 12th studio album of the same name. Her version became the most popular and landed at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the following year. It also became Streisand’s second Top 10 hit, and even landed at No. 2 on the Easy Listening chart.
It was reported that producer Richard Perry looked through Nyro’s tracks and selected “Stoney End” for Streisand to sing. She was hesitant to record the track due to the Bible reference, as she was raised Jewish, the same way Nyro was. She did so anyway, but once commented that the lyrics overall still confused her.
“You know, the lyric still confuses me today, but the melody is so catchy,” Streisand admitted in a Sirius Radio interview in 2014. “It was kind of metaphorical and abstract – which is kind of interesting to guess what the writer intended.”
Perry and Streisand even made a bet about whether the song would be a hit. In the liner notes of Just For The Record, Streisand admitted the bet was settled while they were driving on the Sunset Strip. A local DJ announced it went No. 1 in Los Angeles, and it was “a great way to lose.”
Before Streisand, “Stoney End” was actually covered first by The Stone Poneys, who featured Linda Ronstadt at the time. They created a country-style version for their 1968 album, Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Vol. III. Peggy Lipton and The Chicks also released their covers, as well as The 5th Dimension, Diana Ross, and a few more.
The #1 Eating Habit Over 50 That Quietly Drains Your Energy
The mid-afternoon slumps hit differently once you cross into your 50s. And it’s rarely just a passing wave of tiredness—it’s a heavy, limb-weighing fatigue accompanied by brain fog that turns simple daily tasks into agonizing chores. If you’ve hit this wall, your first instinct might be to blame normal aging, bad sleep or a declining metabolism.
Driven by the fear of age-related weight gain, you might also be desperately stripping your daily menu of carbohydrates, relying solely on dynamic workouts, black coffee and low-carb meals to carry you through the day.

However, nutrition experts warn that the very dietary routine you adopted to stay lean and healthy after 50 could be the precise reason you feel constantly wiped out. In an era dominated by low-carb crazes, continuous glucose monitors and persistent fear-mongering surrounding grains and starches, millions of adults over 50 are draining their own energy without realizing it.
By completely cutting carbohydrates out of their daily meals in pursuit of weight control, mature adults end up accidentally shutting down their biological engines. Reclaiming your daily stamina after 50 doesn’t require radical diet overhauls, expensive biohacking routines or dangerous supplement routines; it simply requires unlearning food fear and prioritizing the right fuel sources.

The single biggest nutritional mistake people make when trying to boost their daily stamina over 50 is radically cutting or eliminating carbs. As natural hormonal shifts occur and natural muscle mass gradually declines, weight management after 50 can certainly feel more challenging. This drives many people to default to extreme carb restriction. However, registered dietitians stress that carbohydrates are not the enemy—they are the body’s preferred source of life-sustaining power.

As Jessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers, previously told Parade, cutting carbs directly sabotages daily stamina. “Carbohydrates are our body’s preferred fuel source, including our brain’s preferred fuel source,” Cording explained. “I see people who think that carbohydrates are going to make them gain weight, so they’re scared to eat them. But then they end up feeling tired.”
When you severely limit your carbohydrate intake, your system lacks the necessary glucose required for cellular function and baseline brain power. Sonya Angelone, RDN, a San Francisco-based registered dietitian, previously told Parade that glucose derived from carbohydrates is precisely what enables cells to produce daily operational energy. Without it, you leave your biological motor running on fumes.
This issue only gets worse if you try to stay active (as you should!): Physical movement burns glycogen stored from carbohydrates; without those reserves, physical exercise leads directly to deep muscle fatigue and total physical exhaustion.

How To Choose the Right Carbs for Lasting EnergyDitching carb elimination doesn’t mean returning to sugary pastries, white bread or processed snacks, which trigger quick blood sugar spikes and immediate crashes. Instead, unlocking consistent energy over 50 comes down to prioritizing complex carbohydrates loaded with dietary fiber.
Unlike simple refined carbohydrates, complex carbs break down slowly during digestion, gradually releasing glucose into your bloodstream for a steady, continuous stream of energy.
Angelone emphasized that fueling up on complex options—like beans, whole grains, lentils and fresh vegetables—creates a “slow burn” that keeps your blood sugar stable and keeps mid-day fatigue away.
Cording suggested picking high-fiber fruits like berries, apples and pears and combining them with healthy fats and lean proteins. By pairing nutrient-dense complex carbs with protein and fat at every meal, adults over 50 can finally escape afternoon fatigue and enjoy sustainable, vibrant energy for years to come.

1954 Pop Song, Recorded by ‘The Sultan of Swoon,’ Is Still Beloved 72 Years Later
In 1954, Frank Sinatra recorded a romantic song written for a new Hollywood movie about three women in Rome. “Three Coins in the Fountain” quickly became a hit, and the song later earned one of Hollywood’s biggest honors.
Written by Jule Styne with lyrics by Sammy Cahn, “Three Coins in the Fountain” was created as the theme for 20th Century Fox’s romantic film of the same name.
The lyrics reference the tradition of tossing a coin into Rome’s Trevi Fountain while making a wish. All three of the movie’s stars, Clifton Webb, Dorothy McGuire and Jean Peters, perform the ritual.
The songwriters had very little time to create it. Styne and Cahn were asked to write it for the film, but had neither seen the movie nor read its script. Despite that, they finished the song in about an hour and had a demonstration recording featuring Sinatra ready the next day.
Known as the “Sultan of Swoon,” Sinatra was 38 when his recording of “Three Coins in the Fountain” became a hit. His version topped the U.K. Singles Chart for three weeks in September and October 1954.
In the U.S., however, the Four Aces had the biggest success with the song. Their version reached No. 1 in July, while Sinatra’s recording peaked at No. 4. Julius LaRosa also recorded “Three Coins in the Fountain,” reaching No. 21, while Dinah Shore’s version failed to make the charts.
The song’s story didn’t end with its original release. The following year, “Three Coins in the Fountain” won Best Original Song at the 27th Academy Awards, taking home the award over songs from White Christmas, The High and the Mighty, Susan Slept Here and A Star Is Born. The film won Best Picture as well.
Sinatra attended the 1955 Academy Awards to present the Best Supporting Actress award to Eva Marie Saint for On the Waterfront. However, he did not perform “Three Coins in the Fountain” during the ceremony. His friend Dean Martin sang the Oscar-winning song instead.
The tune continued to find new audiences in the decades that followed. Jack Jones later recorded his own version, while Steve Martin sang the song in the 1987 film Planes, Trains & Automobiles. The melody was even adapted for a 1967 Hong Kong romantic comedy, Teddy Boy in the Gutter.

Makeup Artist Says This $30 Costco Beauty Find Performs Like Products That Cost Twice as Much
If you looked inside a professional makeup artist’s bag, you’d likely find a wide array of products that range vastly in price. That’s because the pros know firsthand how budget-friendly beauty brands can be just as effective as pricey products. For instance, we recently chatted with a makeup artist who says a $30 Costco beauty find performs like products that cost twice as much.
While interviewing beauty experts, we’ve heard the same thing over and over again: a higher price doesn’t necessarily equal a higher quality product. So we asked Lindsey Trop, a Connecticut-based professional makeup artist, to compare two eyeliners and determine whether the more expensive option is really worth its hefty price tag.
We tasked Trop with comparing Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, which comes in a two-pack for $30 at Costco, and Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen Liquid Eyeliner Duo, which retails for $68. Here, she breaks down the best features of each product and shares some expert tips for using Stila’s liner for the best results.
Trop also weighs in on Costco’s beauty offerings and explains why the members-only warehouse club is a hidden gem that’s worth visiting for high-end beauty and makeup deals.

What Is This $30 Costco Beauty Find and Why Is It Appreciated Among Makeup Artists?Trop shares the Costco deal that’s worth knowing about.
Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner Duo, $30Costco
Shop It at CostcoStila is a well-known, popular makeup brand with prices that typically fall between drugstore and luxury brands. Typically, Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner retails for $25 per eyeliner, so the $30 two-pack that’s available at Costco is a great value.
Trop describes the eyeliner as “tried and true” and a makeup kit “staple.”
“It’s a product you can depend on for nearly every client, whether you’re working with models who are on set for hours and hours, teary-eyed brides or clients going out and about in a heatwave,” she tells Parade.
According to the brand, the “smudge-proof” and “transfer-proof” eyeliner offers a “smooth satin finish.”
Trop particularly appreciates how the eyeliner delivers “all-day wear.”
“As makeup artists, how a product will wear on a client over the course of the day is always top of mind,” she says. “The tip is also sharp enough to give you a ton of control over the shape and thickness of the line you draw.”
In other words, Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner is arguably one of the best Costco beauty products if you’re looking for a bargain that performs well.

How Does This Affordable Costco Find Compare to Luxury, High-End Alternatives? Tom Ford’s Eye Defining Pen Liquid Eyeliner Duo, $68Nordstrom
Shop It at NordstromCompared to Stila’s eyeliner, Tom Ford’s Eye Defining Pen Liquid Eyeliner Duo is more than twice the price and retails for $68. The brand describes it as a “dual-ended liquid eyeliner with a fine calligraphy tip on one end and a brush on the other to create a range of precise sleek to dramatic effects.”
Trop says both Stila and Tom Ford’s eyeliners provide “pigmented, long-wear results.”
“The one major product difference is that Tom Ford’s liner pen is dual-ended so you get a thinner tip (more similar to the one on the Stila pen) and a slightly thicker one. Having more options is never a bad thing and can definitely be seen as an added benefit to consumers,” she says.
The makeup artist notes that the way consumers perceive each of the brands can differ based on their prices, with some assuming that a higher-priced product is more effective. Naturally, this can play a part in the product usage experience.
Overall, Trop says the two products “provide very similar results.”
“You can’t find a better deal than the Stila duo at Costco,” she says.

How To Apply/Use This Product Correctly for Best ResultsConsidering trying Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner? Trop has a few pro tips for getting your money’s worth.
- Take control of oily lids: “An eye primer and setting powder create a great base for liquid liner,” she says.
- Prep the pen: “Give the pen a shake first to make the sure the product is saturating the tip,” she recommends.
- Consider the eye shape you desire: “If you want your eyes to look more almond-shaped, start at the outer corner and draw inwards,” she explains. “If you want your eyes to look more rounded, you can start at the inner corner and draw outwards.”
- Be patient: “It’s rare to get a perfect line on the first pass. It may take several passes. Start thin and build up for your desired result,” she says.

Why Costco Is a Hidden Gem Worth Checking for High-End Beauty and Makeup DealsAlthough Costco is known for offering significant discounts, you may not automatically assume that you’ll find high end makeup deals at the store. But Trop recommends keeping your eye out for Costco luxury beauty dupes.
“Costco provides great value and the beauty brands they carry can surprise you. There are a lot of amazing prestige beauty products there,” she says.
The makeup artist also says Costco’s tendency of selling larger products can also come in handy.
“If you love a product or go through a product quickly, see if Costco carries it in bulk so you can keep your vanity stocked for a longer time and at a more affordable price per unit,” she says.

‘The Family Stone’ Sequel Details Are Finally Here, and Almost Everyone Is Coming Back
“New details about the sequel to The Family Stone just dropped, and it sounds like it’s going to be amazing.
In the beloved 2005 Christmas film, Dermot Mulroney played Everett Stone, who brings his uptight girlfriend, Meredith, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, home to meet his family over the Christmas holiday. Naturally, chaos ensues when Meredith isn’t exactly a hit with the rest of the family, including the matriarch, Sybil, played by the late Diane Keaton. Now, Searchlight has officially confirmed details about the much-discussed sequel, titled The Families Stone, and fans are losing it.
Deadline just reported that the film picks up 20 years after the death of her character, matriarch Sybil Stone (as depicted in the original film), as the Stone family again reunites for Christmas. However, they face a major surprise: Their father, played by Craig T. Nelson, invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family.
“The Families Stone. Coming Soon. Starring Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider, Brian J. White,” a new Instagram post shares.

“I think it’s going to be entitled The Families Stone,” Mulroney shared of the sequel to the beloved holiday movie, written and directed by Thomas Bezucha, who is returning for the sequel. “Everyone’s up for returning. I can be on record,” Mulroney added, naming Rachel McAdams, Luke Wilson, and Craig T. Nelson. “They announced that Tom has the script. I’ve read it. The Family Stone Sequel Will Honor Diane KeatonBack in November, Bezucha told CNN that Keaton’s death in October at the age of 79 was motivation to get the sequel written.
“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” he shared. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
However, he made it clear that he had no interest in making the film if the original stars weren’t up for returning.
“I’m not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan,” he said.

1972 Hit by Deep Purple Ranked Among the 'Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time'
Over 50 years after its release, Deep Purple‘s 1972 hit “Highway Star” is still receiving accolades for its epic guitar solo, performed by Ritchie Blackmore.
In May 2026, Rolling Stone magazine featured the song, off the band’s sixth record, Machine Head, on the publication’s ranking of “The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.” “Highway Star” snagged the list’s 58th spot, with Rolling Stone complimenting Blackmore’s gratifying escalation on the guitar. Other songs on the list include The Kinks‘ “You Really Got Me” (1964), “Albatross” by Fleetwood Mac (1968), and 1978’s “Just What I Needed” by The Cars.
In an interview uploaded on Blackmore’s official YouTube channel, the band’s keyboardist, Jon Lord, who died at the age of 71 in 2012, shared some insight into how Deep Purple came up with “Highway Star.” He noted that it has been reported that “Highway Star started in the back of a bus on the way down to, I think, Portsmouth” in England while the band was touring. He said that the story goes that Deep Purple “needed another opening number,” which had to be “sort of fast and furious.”
“And so Ritchie got his acoustic out and sat on in the back of the bus, and he came up with this,” said Lord while mimicking Blackmore’s guitar notes. “We thought, ‘Yeah, that’ll be cool.’ The story is that we tried it out at soundcheck and then played it that night.”
He clarified that he wasn’t “quite sure that that is strictly true.” Rather, the musician surmised that only part of the tune was created on the bus.
“It might be a touch apocryphal. We might have tried out something that became ‘Highway Star,’ but I can’t imagine that Ritchie and I would have worked out those rather complicated guitar and organ solo passages in the back of a bus on the way to Portsmouth,” said the musician during the interview. “I think that was done later in the studio. But I think we probably played something that night that became ‘Highway Star.'”
1990 Announcement, Made by Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie, Ended an Era for Fleetwood Mac
Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie were two of the defining voices of Fleetwood Mac, but 36 years ago, both announced they were leaving the legendary band. The news came on September 12, 1990, as Fleetwood Mac neared the end of its Behind the Mask tour. After more than a decade at the height of their success, the group’s lineup was starting to unravel.
Lindsey Buckingham had already left Fleetwood Mac in 1987, with Rick Vito and Billy Burnette joining in his place. The band went on to record 1990’s Behind the Mask without major problems, but its future soon looked uncertain when Nicks and McVie announced the tour would be their last with Fleetwood Mac.
At the time, Fleetwood Mac’s publicist described the departures as amicable, saying they came after a “series of very heartfelt conversations.” The publicist also indicated that both Nicks and McVie might still contribute to the band’s next album.
Still, losing both women changed the sound and direction of Fleetwood Mac. Nicks had been a member since 1975, while McVie joined the band in 1970. Together, they provided some of the group’s most recognizable songs, including “Rhiannon,” “Don’t Stop” and “Songbird.”
Mick Fleetwood spoke about the challenge of losing Nicks and McVie in an interview near the end of the tour. “I would have to say this is our biggest challenge, in no uncertain terms,” Fleetwood said. “But without sounding at all blase about the subject, it’s a decision that’s come in a pleasant way, and it’s understandable.”
He explained that both women wanted more time for themselves. “And, God knows, both of them have given so much to Fleetwood Mac through the years.”
Why Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie Left Fleetwood MacMcVie, who was known for being more private, also spoke about wanting a change. The recent death of her father had made her reconsider what she wanted from her career. “In the last few years, it’s been more of a band than it’s ever been,” McVie said. “I think we spent more time laughing in the last few years than in prior years. That’s one thing that’s held us together.”
She added, “But when the time comes for change, you know it, you feel it. Things can’t go on the same as always. You go around in circles.”
Some speculation also centered on Fleetwood’s memoir, Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. The book contained personal revelations about both Nicks and McVie, including details about Fleetwood’s former romantic relationship with Nicks.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported during the tour that the book’s “sordid revelations” had angered both women, particularly Nicks. Fleetwood rejected the idea that the memoir had prompted their departures, calling the speculation “nothing but tommyrot.”
“At the time that Stevie decided to quit, she hadn’t read it,” he said. “I think she and Christine just decided that it was time for them to leave.”
Fleetwood also pointed to their individual plans. Nicks had a successful solo career she wanted to devote more time to, while McVie had recently purchased a farmhouse in England and wanted to settle down while pursuing music and painting.
Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie Reunited With Fleetwood MacNicks may have been leaving Fleetwood Mac, but she wasn’t ready to say the band was finished forever. “I really believe everything is destined, and if we’re supposed to be together, we will be.”
Nicks’ prediction didn’t take long to play out. McVie returned for Fleetwood Mac’s 1995 album Time, by which point several other members had changed.
The album’s disappointing sales were followed by several years of little activity before Nicks, McVie and Buckingham reunited with Fleetwood and John McVie for The Dance in 1997. The band found success with a live album and the tour that followed.
The keyboardist left Fleetwood Mac again shortly afterward but returned in 2014, bringing the classic lineup together once more.

Pharmacists Warn GLP-1 Users To Watch Their Timing With This Other Common Medication
A recent Gallup Poll found that 11% of Americans are taking weight loss drugs like semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound).
Each drug has its nuances, but Dr. Stephanie Redmond, Pharm.D., CDCES, BC-ADM, a pharmacist, explains that they mimic the GLP-1 hormone our gut makes when we eat, prompting insulin release, combating blood sugar spikes and helping our brains learn when we are full (so we should stop eating).
“GLP-1 strongly signals the brain to reduce appetite and feel full more quickly and for longer by slowing digestion,” Dr. Redmond tells Parade. “GIP has a milder impact in doing the same thing, working alongside GLP-1 to provide synergistic appetite suppression and blood sugar regulation, but it also directly improves fat metabolism.”
The drugs come in a few forms.
“GLP-1 most commonly comes as an injection that goes just barely under the skin,” she says. “It’s hard to imagine if you haven’t done this type of injection, but most people cannot even feel it. It goes into the subcutaneous fat tissue where you don’t have much ‘feeling.'”
Related: Doctors Warn This ‘Cheaper’ Ozempic Alternative May Come With Risks
However, in 2026, Dr. Redmond says there are now once-daily, oral, weight-loss-specific GLP-1 pills (she clarifies they’ve been available longer for people with diabetes, though).
But the drugs can also come with side effects. You’ve likely heard about digestive issues like diarrhea or nausea, which typically taper off as your body gets used to the them. However, pharmacists warn of another potential side effect: weight-loss drugs can interact with and reduce the effectiveness of other medications. But there are workarounds. Pharmacists warn users of weight-loss medications to be careful about their timing with this other common medication.

Watch Your GLP-1/GIP Timing With This Medication, Pharmacists WarnAccording to four pharmacists, people taking oral birth control pills and weight loss drugs will want to be mindful of how the drugs can interact. Some weight loss drugs may affect the effectiveness of oral birth control pills.
“The main concern is that the GLP-1 can slow gastric emptying—digestion—and therefore delay and reduce absorption of the birth control,” Dr. Redmond explains. “This means the amount of birth control or hormone levels needed to prevent pregnancy may not be confidently reached.”
That said, pharmacists say that not all weight-loss drugs affect oral birth control absorption for this reason. Ana Carolina Gonçalves, the superintendent pharmacist at Pharmica, notes that current research suggests the issue is specific to tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound).
“It is important to distinguish tirzepatide from GLP-1-only medicines when discussing oral contraception because studies have shown that tirzepatide can affect how the hormones in the contraceptive pill are absorbed,” Goncalves says. “While this does not prove the fact that the contraceptive pill will fail, the reduced effectiveness of contraceptive pills can’t be ruled out.”
Additionally, GLP-1s and GIP-1s can cause side effects such as vomiting or diarrhea. These side effects are most pronounced when you first start the drugs or increase doses. It might affect oral contraceptives.
“Sudden vomiting or diarrhea can physically clear the pill out of your system before your body has time to process it,” reports Dr. Danielle Oncer, Pharm.D., the Chief Wellness Officer of Shroombiosis.com. “The primary risk is not a harmful interaction between oral birth control and GLP-1s but more of a risk of an unexpected drop in birth control effectiveness, which may increase your chances of an unplanned pregnancy.”
Related: This GLP-1 Alternative Offers a Surprising Health Benefit, Doctor Says
Wait—Can I Take Birth Control Pills With Ozempic?Yes. “There is currently no evidence that GLP-1-only medications like semaglutide [make oral contraceptives less effective],” Goncalves says.
However, she explains that you’ll want to take Wegovy oral tablets on an empty stomach (and wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking).
Dr. Sarah McBane, Pharm.D., the founding associate dean for pharmacy education at UC Irvine School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, says you don’t need to change course if you’re taking birth control and dulaglutide, liraglutide and semaglutide (as long as you’re not vomiting or experiencing diarrhea).
People on birth control who are also taking tirzepatide, orforglipron (Foundayo) and exenatide (Byetta) will need to take extra caution, though.
“For tirzepatide and/or orforglipron, people taking birth control pills should use a form of backup contraception for four weeks after starting tirzepatide or after their dose of tirzepatide increases,” Dr. McBane says. “With weekly exenatide, people taking birth control pills should take their birth control pills at least one hour before injecting exenatide.”
If you don’t want to have to worry about the timing, Dr. McBane suggests considering a non-oral form of contraception, such as a:
- Patch
- Ring
- Injection
- IUD
- Implant
“An additional advantage of the non-oral forms of birth control is that they don’t have to be taken daily, which many people find easier,” Dr. McBane says.
If your doctor just increased your tirzepatide dose or you forgot to take your birth control pill one hour before exenatide, she says you’ll want to call in a backup (contraceptive), such as:
- Internal or external condoms (the “backup of choice,” Dr. McBane says)
- Spermicide
- A hormone-free prescription vaginal gel marketed as Phexxi.
Gonçalves adds that these backup contraceptive methods are also important to use if you’re experiencing vomiting or diarrhea—even if you’re using Wegovy or Ozempic.
“If someone has questions about managing their birth control and their GLP-1 medications, they should talk with their pharmacist or physician,” Dr. McBane says.

1983 New Wave Hit Had Goth Rock’s King Purring and Hissing, Named Rolling Stone’s Best Song About Cats
Robert Smith may be known as The Cure’s brooding, black-clad frontman who seemingly managed to define goth rock and New Wave while creating an enduring pop sound, but the ’80s legend has always had a little cat energy. The Cure was one of the defining bands of the ’80s and is now seeing a resurgence in popularity and appreciation, thanks in part to pop stars like Gracie Abrams and Olivia Rodrigo. Now, The Cure frontman is adding another accolade to his long list of “best ofs.” Rolling Stone just named the best song about cats, and no surprise to anyone who’s a fan of ’80s music, The Cure’s “The Lovecats” climbed to the top of the list.
The Cure’s “The Lovecats” Is a Playful Ode to Feline Romance @80sthrowbackhitsThe Cure – Love Cats TOTP 1983. “The Love Cats” (sometimes rendered as “The Lovecats”) is a song by English rock band the Cure, released as a stand-alone single in October of 1983. It was the band’s first top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at no.7 & also reached no.6 on the Australian chart in early 1984. The single later appeared on the compilation album Japanese Whispers, released in December of 1983. #allout80s #80sthrowbackhits #thecure #lovecats #80smusic #80snewwave #80spop #80sera #80skid #borninthe80s #80sthrowback #fyp
♬ The Lovecats – The CureIn 1983, The Cure released an oddly charming ode to feline romance. “The Lovecats” offered a purring and hissing Smith over a frisky jazz bass line, creating a surprisingly playful and slinky sound that was a departure from the band’s signature gloom. Robert Smith embraced his tabby side, from the song’s catty chorus to an ’80s issue of Melody Maker, where he appeared in full feline regalia. One thing The Cure is going to do is fully embrace a theme, and in “The Lovecats,” they did just that.
While, at first glance, a ranking of the best songs about cats might seem, well, specific, this is more than niche music trivia. Cats have a surprisingly enduring place in popular music, from playful novelty songs to songs that use feline imagery to explore romance, independence, coyness and even heartbreak. Beyoncé, Elton John and Squeeze all have songs about cats, after all.

Why Songs About Cats Have Become Such a Popular Music Theme @radioxThe Cure won won their first ever two Grammy awards last night! We’re taking a look back at Robert Smith’s Track By Track album playback #thecure #grammyawards #grammys2026 #robertsmith #songsofalostworld
♬ original sound – Radio XThe metaphor of cats has actually created some bangers in pop and rock. Who didn’t jam along to Janet Jackson’s “Black Cat” in the ’80s? Taylor Swift has made her own cats the stars of music videos and has referred to herself as a “childless cat lady,” which certainly may change now that she’s married. Rolling Stone’s ranking is less a niche roundup and more an opportunity to revisit an enduring music theme, especially as The Cure’s catalog finds a renewed moment in the spotlight.
“The Lovecats” always stood out. Its infectious bass line and Smith’s surprising playfulness seemed a departure for the band, and yet completely in line with a group that created its own rules and its own sound. The Cure could make even a playful song about cats seem right at home on a goth New Wave playlist.
Rolling Stone’s Best Cat Songs RankingRolling Stone describes Smith as an “honorary cat,” which gets to the heart of why “The Lovecats” sits at the top of the ranking. Robert Smith showed a different side of himself, all wrapped up in a mischievous song that’s recognizable from the first strum of the bass.
The Rolling Stone ranking offers a few hot takes, in this writer’s opinion. It’s hard to imagine David Bowie’s “Cat People Putting Out Fire” sitting at a lowly No. 8, or Jackson’s rocking personification of a cat sitting at No. 12. But like cats, music writers are finicky and have strong opinions that don’t always make sense to others.

1978 Hit by Van Halen Ranked Among the Top Rock Songs of All Time
Despite being their first record, Van Halen‘s Van Halen album, released in 1978, made quite the splash, featuring songs like “You Really Got Me,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” and “Runnin’ With the Devil.”
“Runnin’ With the Devil” was recently spotlighted on Ultimate Classic Rock‘s list of the “Top 100 Rock Songs of All Time.” The publication put the 3-minute and 34-second track at the list’s 37th spot, complimenting the late Eddie Van Halen‘s guitar skills. Ultimate Classic Rock also included tunes like 1970’s “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos, Eagles‘ “Hotel California” from 1976, and Bruce Springsteen‘s “Born to Run” (1975) on the ranking.
In a 1978 interview with Classic Rock reporter Steven Rosen, Van Halen, who died in 2020 at the age of 65, discussed recording the band’s first album. He said he was overall pleased with his guitar playing on the record.
“It was cool. I’m not sayin’ I couldn’t do better, but for a first album it only took us a week just to do the music – four or five days. Everything was basically done in a first or second take,” said Van Halen, who was 23 years old when the Van Halen record debuted.
He also shared he didn’t necessarily have a favorite guitar solo on the album.
“I like all the songs and I like all the solos. I guess it takes someone from the outside to pick which one they like best. Spontaneous-wise, I like ‘I’m The One,’ the boogie,” said Van Halen.
In addition, Van Halen shared how producer Ted Templeman ensured that the album was true to the band’s signature live performances.
“What he managed to do was put our live sound on a record. I mean, a lot of people have to do a bunch of overdubs to make it sound full. It’s a lot easier to make a lot of instruments sound full than a guitar, bass and drums. That’s where Ted comes in. He knows his s–t. He’s the man. He’s doing our next one, too. Van Halen is three instruments and voices with very few overdubs, very live sounding,” said Van Halen during the 1978 interview.
