Quote of the Day: 51 Years Ago, Philosopher Stanisław Lem Explained Why Getting It Wrong Is Essential to Finding the Truth—and It Still Rings True Today
What if making mistakes isn’t a detour on the road to the truth? What if it was actually part of the journey? That idea was at the heart of much of the work of Polish writer Stanisław Lem. A pioneering science fiction author, his novels and essays explored everything from artificial intelligence and technology to human intelligence, philosophy and our attempts to understand the universe.
Born September 12, 2921, Lem was unlike many science fiction writers of his era. He didn’t simply imagine futuristic gadgets or distant planets. He used science fiction as a way to ask enormous questions about humanity. How much can we really know? Can humans communicate with an intelligence radically different from our own? And what happens when technology advances faster than our ability to understand its consequences? His work often challenged the idea that humans could easily master the universe around us.
His most famous novel, Solaris, published in 1961, became an international classic and was later adapted into films, including Andrei Tarkovsky’s acclaimed 1972 version and Steven Soderbergh’s 2002 film starring George Clooney. But Solaris was only one part of Lem’s great body of work. He also wrote The Cyberiad, The Star Diaries, His Master’s Voice, The Invincible, and The Chain of Chance, along with many other books. His writing moved easily between science fiction, satire, and philosophy.
Lem also had the ability to be very forward-thinking. In his 1964 book Summa Technologiae, he considered ideas involving artificial intelligence, virtual reality and the creation of artificial worlds long before these technologies became part of everyday conversation. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages, and the official Lem site says his works have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. He became one of the most influential and widely read science fiction writers of the 20th century.
In honor of his birthday, we center on his quote that offers insight into finding the truth and being human.

Quote of the Day by Stanisław Lem“You can’t reach the truth without crossing a sea of mistakes.”
This quote comes from Lem’s 1975 novel The Chain of Chance. The line captures one of the recurring ideas in Lem’s work. Human beings are constantly trying to understand a world that is far more complicated than we realize. And in that process, mistakes are inevitable.
Rather than seeing mistakes as proof that we have failed, Lem suggests that they can be part of how we learn. To reach the truth, we have to make our way through uncertainty, wrong turns, and ideas that may not hold up.
The image of a “sea of mistakes” is very powerful. You may not know exactly where you’re going. And you may have to change course along the way. But you still have to cross it to reach the other side.
Related: Quote of the Day: Viola Davis’ Powerful Advice for Anyone Going Through a Hard Time
Deeper Meaning of Stanisław Lem’s QuoteLem’s quote connects mistakes and knowledge. He suggests that to get closer to the truth we have to let ourselves be wrong and try again.
This idea is very fitting for Lem, who was deeply interested in science and how human beings acquire knowledge. The official Lem website describes his approach to knowledge. It emphasizes observation and the willingness of science to acknowledge its own mistakes and the limits of what it knows.
Lem says we have to cross a sea of mistakes. Mistakes aren’t necessarily signs that we’re going backward. They can be evidence that we are moving, exploring and learning. Every wrong answer can potentially tell us something about where the right answer isn’t. Lem’s quote reminds us that understanding often comes through experimentation. And that a few wrong turns don’t mean we’re lost.
Also, the quote makes room for uncertainty. Lem spent much of his career exploring the limits of human understanding, and his work frequently questioned whether people could ever completely comprehend something radically different from themselves. Sometimes the truth is something we approach by staying curious, questioning what we think we know and having the courage to keep going, keep sailing. Even when the sea gets rough.
More Quotes from Stanisław Lem“We have no need of other worlds. We need mirrors.”
“The more fully man learns about the world, the more limitless the horizons that open before him.”
“Man is a highly illogical creature and therein lies his humanity.”
“Man has gone out to explore other worlds and other civilizations without having explored his own labyrinth of dark passages and secret chambers, and without finding what lies behind doorways that he himself has sealed.”
“Man cannot change the world without changing himself.”

Walmart’s ‘Pretty’ $24 Scalloped Stoneware Pie Dish and Ramekin Set With Gold Trim Makes Fall Baking Even Sweeter

Once September hits, the cookbooks crack open, and the oven practically turns itself on. Before long, there’s an apple crisp bubbling away for after dinner, pumpkin bread cooling on the counter, and a mental list of pies to make before Thanksgiving even enters the conversation. Fall baking season has officially begun.
If your kitchen is about to be working overtime, you need bakeware that can keep up. Walmart has the Thyme & Table Pie Dish and 2-Piece Ramekin Set for just $24, giving all those apple, pumpkin, pecan, and cinnamon-filled plans an especially pretty place to land. Bake, bring it straight to the table, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and start planning what goes in it next.
Thyme & Table Pie Dish and 2-Piece Ramekin Set, $24 at Walmart Shop at WalmartThe three-piece set includes one 9-inch pie dish and two 10-ounce ramekins, all made from stoneware for even heat distribution while baking. Each piece is oven-safe up to 450 degrees, as well as microwave- and freezer-safe, which gives you more flexibility for prepping dishes ahead of time, reheating leftovers, or storing extras. The white finish is accented by vertical ribbing along the exterior, with a scalloped edge around the larger dish and thin gold detailing along the rims. All three pieces are dishwasher-safe, too.
Despite the name, the pie dish can handle far more than dessert. Its round, shallow shape works for quiches, chicken pot pie, shepherd’s pie, baked pasta, casseroles, and vegetable gratins in addition to apple, pumpkin, and pecan pies. Since the stoneware is designed to go directly from the oven to the table, it can also serve as the centerpiece for a brunch spread or family-style dinner without requiring a separate serving dish.

Outside the oven, the ramekins can hold dips, sauces, olives, nuts, or other small bites, making the set useful outside of bakes.
Walmart shoppers said this “pretty” and “durable” pie plate set makes “a fine addition to any table.” One reviewer described the design as “regal,” from “the creamy white color and smooth finish to the fluting.”

‘The Early Spring’ Finale Delivers the Moment Flora and Luke Fans Have Been Waiting For—Here’s What the Ending Means
The Early Spring takes Flora and Luke through professional betrayals, painful breakups and a long road back to each other—but does the hit C-drama ultimately give its central couple a happy ending? The finale is now here, and it answers that question with a deeply personal proposal that calls back to the moment they first met. Full finale spoilers ahead.

What Is The Early Spring on Netflix About?New to Beijing, Shang Zhi Tao/Flora (Sun Qian) crosses paths with Luan Nian/Luke (Jing Boran), a true creative genius. Bold and open-hearted, she grows stronger step by step and gradually breaks through the defenses around Luan’s guarded heart. Drawn to each other, they find themselves caught in an intense, on-again, off-again relationship in the urban jungle. To love is to summon all your courage and leave no regrets, to heal each other, and to grow together. But when love and her career pull her in different directions, she puts her career first. When she has come into her own and he has learned to soften his sharp edges, they finally stand as equals, ready to write a new ending together…
Where can I watch The Early Spring? The Early Spring is streaming internationally on Netflix.
Related: 42 Chinese Dramas So Addictive, You’ll Want to Binge Each and Every One
Is The Early Spring based on a book?Yes, the television series The Early Spring is based on the popular web novel, 早春晴/Zao Chun Qing Lang (A Clear Early Spring Day) by Gu Niang Bie Ku.
How does The Early Spring end for Flora and Luke? After a lot of ups and downs and tears on both sides, Luke and Flora finally get their happy ending when Luke proposes to Flora in front of their family and friends.
Why did Shang Zhitao leave Lime Advertising in the first place?Flora decides to resign after she is passed up for a promotion in favor of a junior associate who brought in a multimillion dollar client though it was well known that she did not achieve this on her own merit but through her family connections. Compound that with six years or corporate pressure, her own insecurities, dealing with the aftermath of her best friend’s suicide, and friction (romantic and workplace) with her boss while trying to maintain a secret workplace romance, ultimately proved to be too much for Flora in the end.
How does Luke come to work for Flora in Harbin? After Flora quits Lime, she cuts all ties in Beijing and retreats back to her hometown of Harbin to lick her wounds. Eventually, she purchases a home there and opens up an event management business. Luke, remorseful about their breakup, travels back and forth from Beijing to Harbin whenever he misses her, roaming the streets and even visiting her parents’ restaurant. As her business struggles to gain clients, Luke uses his industry contacts to help her, but makes sure there’s no trace of his assistance. He eventually cross paths with her in the course of business but instead of his usual domineering, harsh attitude, he approaches her with patience and understanding. He ultimately makes her an offer she can’t refuse. Hire him as her driver, assistant, gopher, whatever she needs, free of charge for six months and he’ll stay in Harbin for stretches of time to do the job.
The Early Spring ending explained: The meaning behind the pop-up museumIn the finale of The Early Spring, the “Museum of Time and Eternity” sets the stage for Luke’s marriage proposal to Flora, symbolizing milestones in their history together and the emotional growth both have achieved over the course of their relationship. Luke gifts Flora a necklace with an “L” typewriter key as the pendant – the same key Flora recovered after she knocked Luke’s manual typewriter off his desk during their first meeting.
Luke declares his love and proposes to Flora at the end of the walk through the museum, in front of their family and friends with Luke the Dog as the messenger.
Does Flora accept Luke’s proposal?Yes! Flora says, “Yes!” The two eventually move back to Beijing where Flora opens up a satellite office of her business there and the two commute back and forth from Harbin and Beijing.
How does The Early Spring show ending compare to the novel? The novel takes its time getting to the proposal, spending several chapters relaying the emotional growth both have gone through. The finale in the television series is a bit rushed. It seems to happen over the span of a few months. In the book, his non-courtship takes place over a year or so. In the book, Luke is much more abrasive and toxic while in the series, his character has been softened to more of a romantic lead and “green flag.”
Will there be a The Early Spring Season 2 on Netflix?Unlikely. The Early Spring was a single book and not a series. There is a second book, Miss Talkative, that follows the opposites attract romance between Lumi (Yezi Zhang) and Will (Chang Liu), so there’s definitely enough fodder there for a spinoff series.

1988 Rock Song, Featured in Tom Cruise Box Office Smash, Was Originally Written by a 17-Year-Old
Just because critics don’t like a movie doesn’t mean it won’t make a ton of money…or have an awesome soundtrack. Take “Cocktail,” for example. Released in 1988 and starring Tom Cruise as a cocky young bartender with a flair for tossing drinks in the air, the romantic dramedy was a big hit at the box office, grossing $171.5 million worldwide. Unfortunately, “Cocktail” was as panned as it was popular, even winning the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture; years later, it has a rating of just 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Absence of critical acclaim aside, “Cocktail” clearly had plenty of box office appeal…due in part to a wildly successful soundtrack that went all the way to #2 on the Billboard 200. The album was packed with hits, like Bobby McFerrin‘s beloved one-hit wonder “Don’t Worry Be Happy” and the Beach Boys’ late ’80s radio mainstay “Kokomo.”
Another classic track that will forever be associated with “Cocktail” was actually a cover…of a cover: “Hippy Hippy Shake.”
The version of “Hippy Hippy Shake” that appears in “Cocktail” was performed by The Georgia Satellites and plays during one of the movie’s most famous scenes showing off Cruise’s aforementioned skills behind the bar. Originally, though, “Hippy Hippy Shake” was released in 1959 by Chan Romero. According to the Encyclopedia of Latino Popular Culture, Romero was just 17 years old when he wrote the song.
A few years later, in 1963, the Beatles recorded five versions of “Hippy Hippy Shake” for BBC Radio, sparking an interest in the song among other Merseybeat groups, per the Beatles Bible.
“There were millions of groups around at that time — The Blue Angels, The Running Scareds — but they were mostly lookalike groups; The Shadows and Roy Orbison had a lot of followers,” Paul McCartney recalled in The Beatles Anthology.
“Then there were groups like us, more into the blues and slightly obscure material. And because we had the unusual songs, we became the act you had to see, to copy,” he continued.
“We had too much material anyway. We couldn’t record it all when we did get a deal, so other groups took songs from our act and made hits out of them — like The Swinging Blue Jeans with the ‘Hippy Hippy Shake,’ which was one of my big numbers.”
Plenty of other acts have covered “Hippy Hippy Shake” over the years, too, including Dusty Springfield and The Dave Clark Five. As for the possibility of “Cocktail” ever being remade, chances are likely slim.
“There is not a moment in the movie’s last half-hour that is not borrowed from other movies, and eventually even the talented and graceful Cruise can be seen laboring with the ungainly reversals in the script,” Roger Ebert wrote in his review at the time of the film’s release.
“[Elisabeth] Shue, who does whatever is possible with her role, is handicapped because her character is denied the freedom to make natural choices; at every moment, her actions are dictated by the artificial demands of the plot,” Ebert continued, adding, “The more you think about what really happens in ‘Cocktail,’ the more you realize how empty and fabricated it really is.”

‘I’m an Oncologist—These Are 5 Everyday Habits I Never Do at Home’
Every day, it seems, there’s a trending news headline about a habit that can give you cancer. Sure, you already know that smoking isn’t great for your health. But even habits that seem harmless—like sitting all day or using items made of plastic—now seem dangerous.
Other habits that you may worry will give you cancer: being stressed out, not getting enough sleep, being exposed to air pollution, getting a gel manicure, eating candy…When you start thinking about all of the potential cancer-causing habits, it can start to feel pretty overwhelming.

But what actually matters and what’s more alarmist than legitimate? No one knows better than an oncologist who works with cancer patients every day. Part of an oncologist’s job is keeping up to date on the latest scientific research about what causes cancer and how to treat it. They see firsthand the impact that lifestyle habits and environmental exposures can have.
With that in mind, we asked Dr. Khalil Choucair, MD, an oncologist and member of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, what habits he personally makes an effort to avoid to lower his risk of cancer. His advice for lowering your risk is a lot less overwhelming than you may think.

How Much Control Do You Have Over Cancer Prevention? Is who gets cancer left completely up to chance or is it something we can control? The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Dr. Choucair says that an estimated 30% of cancer cases are preventable through diet and lifestyle habits. This is similar to data reported by the World Health Organization and the American Association for Cancer Research, which both say that 40% of all cancer cases are preventable.
Dr. Choucair says that obesity, diet quality and tobacco use are three major factors to consider when it comes to cancer risk. According to a 2023 scientific review published in Cancers, between 4 and 8% of all cancers are attributed to obesity. The paper’s researchers and authors explained that the reason for this connection is complicated and is not fully understood. The theory is that it’s related to fatty acid metabolism, chronic inflammation, secretion of certain hormones and immune dysregulation, among other factors.

What’s encouraging is that weight loss medications like GLP-1s seem to be playing a role in reducing cancer risk related to obesity, as shown in a 2025 study published in JAMA Oncology.
Certainly obesity isn’t the only risk factor for cancer—it’s not even the biggest one. It’s just one to be aware of. Dr. Choucair says that anyone with a diet high in ultra-processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables is at increased risk for cancer. A 2025 study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition backs this up, showing that a diet high in ultra-processed foods is associated with increased risk of several cancers, including colorectal, breast, liver and pancreatic cancer because these foods increase inflammation in the body.

5 Habits an Oncologist Never Does at HomeWhen it comes to lowering his own risk of cancer, Dr. Choucair says that there are five habits he avoids, which are listed and explained below.
1. Eat fast food regularlyDr. Choucair says that he very rarely eats fast food. Scientific data is pretty clear about the connection between fried foods (like French fries and onion rings) and fatty meats (like burgers, hot dogs and bacon) and cancer risk.
For what it’s worth, three oncologists previously told Parade that they avoid ordering fried foods at restaurants for this very reason. Deep frying exposes foods to very high temperatures, which can produce compounds such as acrylamide and other chemicals that researchers continue to study for their potential role in cancer risk.
2. Add sugar to coffee or teaWhen Dr. Choucair makes a cup of coffee or tea, he says he has it black and doesn’t add any sugar or sweeteners to it. On their own, both coffee and tea are associated with reducing cancer risk when consumed regularly. But as soon as sugar enters the picture, that benefit is completely negated.
3. Use tobaccoYou knew this one would be on the list, right? Dr. Choucair says that he never uses tobacco. “I do not use tobacco in any form,” he emphasizes. While many people know that smoking or vaping can cause lung cancer, many people do not realize that it increases the risk of at least 16 other types of cancer too, including mouth, liver, breast, stomach, ovary and bowel cancers.
4. Live a sedentary lifestyleWhile everyone needs downtime, too much lounging around isn’t good for your health. “I exercise three to four times a week,” Dr. Choucair says.
Truly any type of exercise is beneficial, even (and especially) walking, as shown by a 2025 study that took into account more than 431,000 people. Researchers found that the faster you walk, the greater the benefits. But truly walking at any speed is beneficial.
When it comes to diet, Dr. Choucair says that he follows the Mediterranean diet, which has been repeatedly associated with a decreased risk of cancer. This way of eating centers around vegetables, fruit, plant-based proteins, lean meats, seafood and healthy fats from olive oil, nuts and seeds while minimizing ultra-processed foods and red meat.
As it was explained earlier, ultra-processed foods increase inflammation. All the foods part of the Mediterranean diet decrease it.
If you want to start prioritizing habits that lower your risk of cancer, where should you start? There’s one habit that Dr. Choucair says matters far and above anything else: avoiding tobacco. “The most important way to reduce your risk of cancer is by not smoking or otherwise using tobacco products and by avoiding secondhand smoke,” he says.
According to the American Cancer Society, 80% of lung cancer cases and lung cancer deaths are related to smoking. Let that sink in for a second. On top of that, smoking causes about 20% of all cancers and 30% of all cancer deaths in the U.S.
If you don’t use tobacco, the next best place to start is diet. Three of the five habits Dr. Choucair avoids are related to this. The more whole foods you eat and the less ultra-processed, the better.
It should feel empowering to know that cancer isn’t left completely up to chance. While no one can decrease their risk completely, there’s a lot you can do. The everyday choices you make really do matter, especially when it comes to your health.

Carson Daly, Who Witnessed 9/11 in NYC, Captures 'Crazy, Unexpected' Moment There 25 Years Later
After a somber day of marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11, NBC‘s Carson Daly experienced a “crazy, unexpected full circle moment” from his NYC hotel room. Daly, who is part of the Today show’s anchor team and host of The Voice, shared a poignant post and two stunning photos of New York’s skyline late on Friday, September 11.
One of the crystal clear nighttime photos Daly posted was a gorgeous view of the skyline with the two beams of light that illuminate the night sky annually on 9/11 from dusk until dawn, representing the fallen Twin Towers. The second photo showed the new JP Morgan Chase headquarters at 270 Park Avenue, with its digital “crown roof” projecting an American flag.
View this post on InstagramDaly captioned the photos, “I’m in mid town Manhattan (feverishly prepping) to co-host weekend @todayshow (ok maybe mildly prepping) & made my way to the 88th floor & took these 2 pix myself.”
“I KNOW, they look like AI,” the former host of MTV‘s Total Request Live continued. “I swear on every Britney video I played for you growing up, these are real. I took them. And when I was done my wife Siri said to me ‘it’s 9:11’ I looked at my phone and that’s exactly what time it was.”
“I watched those sacred beams of light both crumble with my own eyes too, 25 yrs ago from my apt here in NYC,” Daly shared. “Crazy, unexpected full circle moment. My heart is with those we lost that day & subsequently. ❤️🍎”
When Daly noticed that Meta added a disclaimer to his post noting that it included “AI content,” he wrote in the comment section, “It says “AI Content” because I removed some glare from top right of pic thru window. FYI”
Carson Daly’s Show Says MTV’s Total Request Live Went Back on the Air After Several DaysIn 2001, Daly was still hosting TRL, MTV’s incredibly popular live afternoon show, which stayed off the air for three days following the 9/11 attacks, per the Los Angeles Times.

“We had such a massive audience that the question was raised, ‘Do we have a responsibility to simply show up?’ ” Daly told the outlet ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
After figuring out how to get crew members to work given the closed bridges and roads, they went live again on TRL, with superstars Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Kid Rock calling in to share their views and experiences, while producers posted messages from viewers reflecting on the tragedy.
Carson told Today.com in 2023, “We just felt like the show had hit a place where we all of a sudden had a responsibility that was much larger than music. And we wanted to be there for that generation, through good times and bad.”
CBS Sitcom, With 'Best TV Show' Award, Is Still Hilarious 48 Years Later
In 1974, CBS introduced Rhoda, the sitcom starring Valerie Harper that became a television hit, earning a “Best TV Show” award and eventually being recognized as one of the most memorable sitcoms of the era.
For five seasons, the comedy series entertained viewers with its ability to bring a comedic touch to real-life issues like women in the workforce, divorce and single life.
The show was created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns as a spin-off of the highly successful Mary Tyler Moore Show.
At the time, Rhoda Morgenstern had become such a beloved character that it led to her getting a sitcom of her own.
David Groh as Joe Gerard and Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern Gerard in CBS’ Rhoda.According to Harper, a casting official from CBS saw her in a theater production and “called her in” for an audition.
“I got the part before I even drove home,” she shared during a 2002 interview with Larry King.
“I was just thrilled to be part of the television show,” Harper added when asked if she thought that her character would be a big hit. “Even with just the pilot, I really didn’t imagine it. I knew it was good. The script was wonderful when I read it, but I didn’t have any preconceived ideas about it.”
Valerie Harper reprised her role as Rhoda Morgenstern, the stylish, independent woman in her 30s known for her sharp tongue, quick wit and relatable personality.
She marries the handsome and very down-to-earth Joe Gerard, played by David Groh, who later became her ex-husband.
After returning from Minneapolis to her hometown of New York City, Rhoda begins a new life, where she later faces marital woes and divorce.
Amid this, she has her closest confidante, her younger sister Brenda Morgenstern, played by Julie Kavner.
From 1974 to its finale in December 1978, the CBS show garnered not only strong viewership, including an average of 18 million viewers in its first season, but also multiple nominations and awards.
These included Julie Kavner’s Primetime Emmy win for Outstanding Continuing Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1978 and Valerie Harper’s Emmy win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1975.
Adding to the milestone was the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, which the show won in 1975.

1962 Bob Dylan Song, Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time,’ Was No. 1 For ’60s Rock Legends 62 Years Ago Today
In 1962, Bob Dylan included a haunting traditional folk song called “House of the Risin’ Sun” on his self-titled debut album. Two years later, a British rock band transformed the song into an international No. 1 hit.
The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” was in the middle of a three-week run atop the Billboard Hot 100 62 years ago today, after reaching No. 1 on the chart dated Sept. 5, 1964. It would become the group’s only No. 1 hit in both the United States and Britain.
And more than six decades later, the recording is still regarded as one of rock’s landmark songs.
“House of the Rising Sun” had been around long before either Dylan or The Animals recorded it. Dylan learned his arrangement from folk singer Dave Van Ronk before recording the song for Bob Dylan, released in 1962.
The Animals were already performing the song when they landed a spot opening for Chuck Berry on a U.K. tour. According to Fred Bronson’s “Billboard Book of Number One Hits,” audience reaction convinced producer Mickie Most that the group should record it. The Animals went into a London studio and captured “House of the Rising Sun” in just two takes.
The record sounded unlike almost anything else on pop radio at the time. Hilton Valentine’s instantly recognizable guitar arpeggio opens the track, Alan Price’s organ gives it an eerie atmosphere and Eric Burdon delivers a booming vocal that made the old folk song sound startlingly contemporary.
The Animals also changed the song’s perspective. Earlier versions, including Dylan’s, told the story from a woman’s point of view. The Animals altered the lyrics for Burdon to sing them from a male perspective.
The result was enormous. “House of the Rising Sun” became a No. 1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1964 and helped establish The Animals as one of the major British Invasion bands.
Its influence has endured as well.
Rock critic Dave Marsh ranked “House of the Rising Sun” No. 91 in his book “The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made,” describing it as an early landmark of folk-rock and arguing that The Animals established a new standard for the folk-rock and blues-rock remakes that followed.
Rolling Stone later included the recording on its list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” highlighting the transformation of the old American folk ballad through Burdon’s vocals and Price’s distinctive arrangement.
There was even a fascinating Dylan connection after the record became a hit. In the book “Chasing the Rising Sun: The Journey of an American Song,” Animals drummer John Steel later recalled that Dylan was driving when he first heard their version on the radio and was so excited that he stopped his car and jumped out. The success of The Animals’ electric interpretation has also been cited as one of the influences that encouraged Dylan as he moved toward electric rock.
For The Animals, however, “House of the Rising Sun” remained singular. The group would score more major ’60s hits, including “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” and “Don’t Bring Me Down,” but never returned to No. 1 on the Hot 100.
Sixty-two years later, their version of an old folk song that Dylan had recorded two years earlier remains the recording most closely associated with “House of the Rising Sun.”

'Teen Mom' Star Lands First 'Real' Job Outside of Reality TV
Teen Mom OG‘s Catelynn Baltierra is officially a working mom. The reality star landed a job as an instructional aide at her children’s school district.
“Catelynn was drawn to Cros-Lex by the friendly, family-centered teachers and staff — she says every teacher her own children have had has been amazing!” the hiring announcement, which was shared via Instagram on Wednesday, September 9, read. “This year, she’s looking forward to growing within our school community and helping students reach their full potential.”
The district described Catelynn as “a birth mom and mother to three girls!”
“Outside of school, she enjoys horses and reading. She’s been with her husband since middle school — together 20 years and married for 11 — and their three girls are all part of the Cros-Lex school district too,” the announcement added.
Fans were quick to congratulate the MTV star on landing a “real job” after nearly two decades on reality TV.
Catelynn and husband Tyler Baltierra first appeared on season 1 of MTV’s 16 & Pregnant in 2009. During their episode, cameras followed the then-teenage couple throughout their pregnancy with daughter Carly. The pair ultimately decided to place their baby girl for adoption.
Following their stint on the docuseries, MTV brought them back for the spinoff, Teen Mom.
Cate and Ty later welcomed three more daughters: Nova, 11, Vaeda, 7, and Rya, 5.
Dolly Parton's Sister Addresses Rumor She Died of a ‘Broken Heart’ After Carl Dean's Death
Dolly Parton was devastated by the loss of her husband, Carl Dean, but her sister doesn’t believe grief was responsible for the country legend’s death.
Stella Parton addressed speculation that Dolly died of a “broken heart” following Dean’s death while speaking with Gayle King on CBS Mornings Thursday, September 10. The couple had been married for 58 years before Dean died in 2025 at age 82.
“I think she was very sad,” Stella said. “But I don’t think that’s why she got sick. I think she worked too hard and didn’t maybe take as good of care of herself as she should have.”
Stella acknowledged just how difficult Dean’s declining health had been for her sister. “I think it broke her heart to see him in the shape he, you know, got to before he passed away,” she said. “But I don’t think that’s what made her sick. I think my sister worked so hard for so long and just kept going.”
In fact, Stella said Dolly was still working during their final conversation. “That was her passion,” she said.
She also talked about Dolly and Dean’s famously private marriage. While Dolly became one of the world’s most recognizable entertainers, Dean largely stayed away from Hollywood. “He adored her,” Stella recalled. “He was fascinated with her. He thought she was funny, like Tinkerbell, you know?”
Dean was also “proud” of his wife and, according to Stella, “loved her enough to let her be what she was.”
Dolly died August 25 at age 80 following what her representatives described as a brief battle with cancer. The specific type has not been publicly disclosed.

Dolly’s niece Jada Star also shed light on how the singer handled her health struggles behind the scenes. Speaking to Extra after her aunt’s death, Star explained that Dolly deliberately kept much of what she was experiencing within the family.
“You know, we kind of kept all that stuff real private and so she never wanted to worry anybody,” she said.
Dolly had previously acknowledged that she neglected some of her own health while caring for Dean as his health declined. She also revealed in May that her immune and digestive systems had gotten “all out of whack” over the previous three years.

Hobby Lobby's Vibrant Fall Wreath Will Add a Beautiful Burst of Nature's Gold to Your Front Door
Autumn decorating is often less about adding a lot and more about choosing a few details that immediately make a space feel warmer. Seasonal color can soften a plain entryway, give a living room a more inviting mood and make everyday rooms feel ready for cooler weather. Rich reds, burnt oranges, golden browns and deep greens work especially well because they echo the changing leaves outside while pairing naturally with wood, neutral fabrics and warm metallic accents.
A wreath is one of the simplest ways to create that transition. It can frame a front door, add height above a mantel, brighten an empty wall or become the finishing touch on a dining-room buffet. Unlike a larger seasonal display, it does not take much space or require a complete redesign of the room. A well-chosen wreath can also last beyond a single occasion, bringing a homey feel from the first days of fall through Thanksgiving.

Robert Stanley Fall Classics Maple Leaves & Acorns Wreath, $26.39 at Hobby LobbyHobby Lobby
Hobby Lobby’s Maple Leaves & Acorns Wreath brings those familiar autumn elements together in one full, textured arrangement. It layers fabric maple leaves in shades of russet, amber, red, brown and green with clusters of berries and small acorns. The variation in color and texture keeps the arrangement from looking flat, while the leaf detailing gives it a more natural, gathered appearance. Its twig-style base adds a rustic foundation that complements the foliage and creates the impression of branches gathered from a woodland landscape.
At approximately 26 inches in diameter, the wreath is large enough to stand out on a standard door or wall without overwhelming the surrounding décor. It can be used in an entryway to welcome guests, above a fireplace to anchor a seasonal mantel, or over a console table paired with candles, pumpkins, or baskets. Because the design does not feature text or a holiday-specific symbol, it works for a broad stretch of the season—from early September decorating through Thanksgiving gatherings.

The colors make it easy to style with different fall looks. Pair it with neutral pumpkins and woven storage baskets for a softer, natural palette or add plaid ribbon, brass lanterns and darker wood accents for a more traditional harvest setting. A wide velvet ribbon in burgundy, forest green, rust or chocolate brown can also make the wreath feel more personal and polished. Against a white, cream, beige or gray wall, the foliage becomes an especially effective source of seasonal contrast.
Once it is unpacked, gently spread the leaves, branches, berries and acorns so the arrangement looks round and full. It is best suited to indoor spaces or a covered porch that remains dry, as moisture can affect fabric foliage and decorative finishes. After the season, store it in a roomy wreath bag or box away from direct sunlight and humidity. With simple care, it can become a reliable part of your fall decorating routine year after year.
