Maria Bartiromo Breaks Silence 1 Week After Fox News Exit

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 7:08pm

Maria Bartiromo broke her silence one week after her exit from Fox News.

The longtime anchor took to social media on Thursday, September 10, to thank her fans for their support amid her departure.

“Thank you to all friends & followers for your amazing words I am so grateful for the outpouring of love on SM & texts,” she shared via X alongside a photo of a rainbow over the ocean. “I love you all. here’s a great shot of the 🌈 breaking through, I snapped the other day. More to come.”

Her gratitude was shared one week after Fox News Media announced it was cutting ties with the Mornings with Maria host, thanking her for her more than 12 years of work with the network.

“For many years, Maria Bartiromo hosted three number-one-rated television shows on Fox channels. She has been, without question, one of the hardest-working journalists throughout her award-winning career,” Bryan Freedman, Bartiromo’s attorney, said in a statement to People. “The irresponsible reports that have been published stating that Maria Bartiromo was fired or is no longer an employee of Fox are absolutely and unequivocally false. Make no mistake, we have the receipts and witnesses and they will come out whether through the courthouse or otherwise.”

Twiggy’s Famous Pixie Cut Is Long Gone: See Her Chic Look at 76

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 7:07pm

’60s supermodel legend Twiggy is pretty in pink with shoulder-length hair, a departure from her legendary pixie cut.

Twiggy, 76, who is known as Dame Lesley Lawson in real life, hit the fast track with her trademark short hair and long lashes during the swinging ’60s. While her memorable haircut has long since left the building, the blonde beauty still looks incredible. She hit the red carpet at The Daily Front Row’s Fashion Media Awards at the Rainbow Room in New York and made it clear she can pull off any hairstyle with ease.

Twiggy and Fran Drescher are Tight

Drescher, 68, had small roles in films like Saturday Night Fever and This Is Spinal Tap, but became a household name thanks to her role on The Nanny as Fran Fine, a Jewish nanny from Flushing, Queens, who rules the roost for a ritzy family in New York City. The series, which ran from 1993 to 1999, became a family favorite in America and continues to live on in reruns. Now, the dynamic duo is hanging out together, and they’re both absolute beauties.

“In London with my dear friend the one and only Twiggy!” Drescher captioned her photo, which showed the two sitting at a restaurant table together.

Back in 2020, Twiggy made an appearance on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners and opened up about how she came to have that iconic cut, which she originally didn’t want in the first place. Too intimidated to turn down British stylist Leonard Lewis, she acquiesced.

“I went in to have it shampooed and set and Leonard saw me and he said, ‘Let me do my new haircut on you,’” Twiggy told Ware during the podcast, PEOPLE reported.

“I’d been growing my hair,” she explained. “For a moment, I kind of went, ‘I don’t know whether I want my hair cut.’ But I was in this very posh

salon in Mayfair, so I was a bit too shy to say I don’t want it done, and I kind of nodded.”

Twiggy returned the next day and was there for seven hours to undergo the cut and color. When a photographer took a few snaps of her, Lewis hung the photos in the salon.

“Leonard put it up in the salon, and a journalist saw it,” Twiggy said. “That’s how it all happened… When that haircut started, when that photograph was taken, that was the pivotal moment.”

On her Instagram page, Twiggy occasionally posts throwback photos of herself with the fan-favorite cut.

Rock Hall of Famers, Ranked Among the ‘Greatest Rock Bands of All Time,’ Are Suddenly Back on the Charts 40 Years After First No. 1 Hit

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 7:07pm

In 1986, Bon Jovi went from a rising New Jersey rock band to one of the biggest acts in the world, scoring its first No. 1 hit with “You Give Love a Bad Name.”

Forty years later, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are suddenly back on the charts.

Bon Jovi’s Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection has returned to Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart at No. 50. Even more impressive, the compilation has now spent a whopping 444 weeks on that ranking.

Released in 2010, Greatest Hits brought together songs spanning decades of Bon Jovi’s career, including “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “It’s My Life,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “Bad Medicine,” “I’ll Be There for You,” “Born to Be My Baby,” “Always” and “Runaway.”

The collection was a hit from the beginning. It debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 88,000 copies sold and also reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.

Its longevity has been even more remarkable. In addition to its 444 weeks on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, the collection has logged 422 weeks on the Billboard 200, 306 weeks on Top Rock Albums and 536 weeks on Top Hard Rock Albums, among numerous other chart runs.

The latest appearance comes four decades after “You Give Love a Bad Name,” from Bon Jovi’s blockbuster 1986 album Slippery When Wet, became the band’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Livin’ on a Prayer” followed it to No. 1, helping turn Slippery When Wet into a phenomenon. The album spent eight weeks atop the Billboard 200, while 1988’s New Jersey gave Bon Jovi two more Hot 100 chart-toppers, “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There for You.”

Decades later, Bon Jovi continues to earn recognition as one of rock’s biggest bands. The Evening Standard ranked the group No. 9 among the greatest American rock bands of all time, pointing to its enormous commercial success and the songs that made Bon Jovi an ’80s powerhouse. MetalShout similarly placed Bon Jovi at No. 10 on its ranking of the greatest rock bands of all time, highlighting the group’s long list of hits and staying power.

Yardbarker ranked the band No. 2 on its list of the Greatest Hair Metal Bands of All Time, calling them “one of the biggest acts in the world.”

Bon Jovi’s resume certainly backs up the accolades. The band has sold more than 130 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

And 40 years after that first trip to No. 1, listeners are still turning to the songs that helped make Bon Jovi one of the defining rock bands of the ’80s.

1971 Song by Jethro Tull Ranked Among the 'Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs of All Time'

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 7:03pm

While Jethro Tull is one of the most enduring classic rock bands, a number of their tracks haven’t been celebrated by mainstream audiences. For instance, Collider recently featured the band’s 1971 Ian Anderson-penned song, “My God,” off the band’s fourth album, Aqualung, on the publication’s list of the “10 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs of All Time.”

“My God,” which lasts 7 minutes and 11 seconds, took home the ranking’s fourth spot, with the publication complimenting Anderson’s guitar and flute playing on the track. Some of the other songs included on Collider‘s list are Led Zeppelin‘s “The Rain Song,” Aerosmith‘s “Seasons of Wither,” and Santana‘s “Transcendence.”

Ian Anderson Discussed Jethro Tull’s ‘Aqualung’ Record in a 2020 Interview

Anderson, now 79, discussed the Aqualung album, which also featured songs like “Aqualung,” “Cross-Eyed Mary,” and “Wond’ring Aloud,” in a 2020 interview with Louder. The flutist described the record as “an album of contrasts,” noting that many of the songs are quite different from each other.

“It had some big, bombastic rock songs – ‘Locomotive Breath’ and ‘Aqualung’ – but also the singer-songwriter thing. With some of the songs, I was in the studio on my own, playing acoustic guitar. It wasn’t that it was folk music, but it was acoustic music, which the band would to some degree add other components to,” explained Anderson.

In addition, Anderson shared he was particularly pleased with the songs, “‘Aqualung’ and ‘My God’ and some of the acoustic things that are a little more whimsical and personal,” off the record.

He also noted that the album “wasn’t a huge hit out of the box,” but was eventually a standout record in terms of sales.

“It did okay at the time, a bit better than the previous ones, but it just kept on selling over a long period of time. The last time I looked, a few years ago, it had clocked up twelve million sales. Pretty big,” said the musician in the Louder interview.

First up is Friday, Oct. 2, at the Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville, Delaware, with stops including Pennsylvania, Maine, Florida, and Canada. The shows currently wrap up on Friday, Dec. 4, at the First Interstate Arena at MetraPark in Billings, Montana, with one more show scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2027, at The Palace Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut.

The run also includes the three-day Rockin’ in Paradise With Styx + Friends festival, Oct. 8 to 10, in Miramar Beach, Florida. And according to Ultimate Classic Rock, the rock icons also have a stop scheduled for January 2027 with Cheap Trick in California.

Styx began in 1961 with twin brothers Chuck and John Panozzo and their neighbor Dennis DeYoung. After initially performing as The Tradewinds, they became TW4 in 1965; James “J.Y.” Young and John Curulewski joined before the group eventually became Styx, inspired by the mythological river said to separate the world of the living from the underworld.

Styx’s breakthrough came in 1975 with Equinox, their first album with A&M Records and Tommy Shaw. During the band’s classic era, albums like The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979), and Paradise Theatre (1981) turned Styx into multi-platinum superstars. They even became the first band to earn four consecutive multi-platinum albums in the U.S.

With enduring rock anthems like “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” “Mr. Roboto,” and No. 1 hit “Babe,” the band continues to find new listeners on classic rock radio and streaming platforms, where its catalog has racked up more than a billion streams and roughly 4.7 million monthly listeners.

Now, with more than 54 million albums sold worldwide, they’re keeping the river of rock flowing. Tickets are on sale now, with information, dates, and venues all listed on styxworld.com.

Juror in Lindsay Clancy Trial Had Domestic Violence History and Active Restraining Order

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 6:55pm

Ever since the Massachusetts murder trial ended without a verdict, jurors who sat to determine Lindsay Clancy‘s fate have been revealing new details about what happened behind closed doors during deliberations.

Now, a troubling new report is raising fresh questions about the lone holdout juror, revealing a history of domestic violence allegations and an active restraining order that allegedly remained in effect while he sat on the jury.

NBC10 Boston reported on Friday, September 11, that the still-unidentified man previously faced a criminal charge linked to an alleged 2021 assault involving his then-wife. That charge was later dismissed.

The new report comes days after Clancy, who was accused of killing her three kids at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, saw her trial end in a mistrial when the 12-person jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.

What Was the Lindsay Clancy Juror Previously Accused Of?

According to a police report obtained by the outlet, the juror’s 13-year-old nephew called 911 in September 2021 and alleged that his uncle grabbed his wife by the throat and threw her into a dresser. Prosecutors charged the man in connection with the incident, but later dismissed the case.

According to Page Six, his former wife reportedly told the outlet she did not pursue the case because she feared testifying could affect custody of her daughter. Court records also reportedly show that the couple later divorced. The same nephew obtained a restraining order against the man in 2025 after another alleged confrontation.

In an affidavit cited by NBC10 Boston, the nephew alleged that his uncle pushed him to the ground and struck him in the face. The nephew also alleged that the man told him, “You ruined my [expletive] life” for previously calling police, and added, “You’ve had this coming your way for a long time.”

The restraining order was reportedly still active when the juror was selected for Clancy’s trial.

Could the Juror’s History Have Affected Jury Selection?

Massachusetts juror questionnaires ask prospective jurors whether they have been arrested, charged with a crime, or served with certain court orders. Legal analyst Michael Coyne questioned how the juror ultimately made it onto the panel.

“I don’t see how they would’ve allowed him to be a member of this jury,” Coyne told NBC10 Boston. The report did not immediately make clear how the juror answered those questions or what information attorneys and the court had during jury selection.

Why Is the Holdout Juror Already Under Scrutiny? Defense attorney Kevin Reddington and Lindsay Clancy listen to the 911 recording from January 24, 2023. The Lindsay Clancy murder trial is held at Plymouth Superior Court in Plymouth on July 29, 2026.

The juror had already become the focus of attention after other panel members said the final split was 11-1 in favor of finding Clancy not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.

Juror Nick Dargie has also alleged that the holdout wrapped one of the exercise bands introduced as evidence around a water bottle during deliberations to mimic the strangulations, ABC News reported.

Clancy, 36, was accused of killing her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in January 2023. She shared the kids with her former husband, Patrick Clancy. Her defense argued that she had postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors maintained that she understood the wrongfulness of her actions. Dargie said the demonstration stunned the room. The new revelations are now adding another layer of scrutiny to a trial that ended without a verdict and left prosecutors deciding whether to pursue the case again.

Costco's Beautiful and Plush Accent Rug Is the High-End Look for Less Your Space Needs

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 6:55pm

A rug can completely change the way a room feels. It can warm up hardwood floors, make a seating area feel more defined, soften a bedroom or bring color into a space that otherwise feels plain. But when you have pets, kids, frequent guests or simply a busy household, it is important to find one that looks good without feeling too delicate to actually live on.

That is why a durable rug with a soft pile is always worth considering. You want something comfortable enough to walk on barefoot but practical enough for everyday life. A rug should make a room look more pulled together, not become another item you are constantly worried about staining or damaging.

Icon Rug Collection, Sanji Blue, $129.99 at Costco

Icon Rug Collection, Sanji Blue

Costco’s Icon Rug Collection in Sanji Blue is a great option for anyone looking for a bold yet versatile area rug. The contemporary rug has a rich blue color palette and a textured, multi-height surface that adds dimension to a living room, bedroom, home office, dining area or entryway.

The rug is made with a combination of longer polypropylene frieze fibers and shorter polyester shrink fibers. That blend creates a thick, plush pile with varied heights, giving the rug more visual interest and a soft feel underfoot. The pile height measures approximately 0.78 inches, which gives it a cozy, substantial look without being overly shaggy.

Beyond its texture, the Sanji Blue rug is designed for durability. It is stain-resistant and has a jute backing, making it a practical choice for rooms with heavy foot traffic. The rug is machine-made in Turkey using Wilton weaving, a construction method known for creating detailed, durable patterns.

Related: Costco’s Sleek and Durable 3-Piece Luggage Set Is the Perfect Buy for Frequent Travelers

The Icon Collection is available in several sizes, including five feet three inches by seven feet, six feet six inches by nine feet, seven feet 10 inches by 10 feet and eight feet eight inches by 13 feet. That range makes it easy to choose a size for a smaller seating area or a large living-room layout.

For care, Costco recommends vacuuming regularly and spot-cleaning spills with water and gentle soap. Avoid soaking the rug; instead, lift the spill or soil from the surface and allow the area to dry thoroughly.

The deep blue tone can work beautifully with warm wood furniture, cream upholstery, brass accents, gray sofas and natural woven textures. It is a great way to add personality to a neutral room without committing to a colorful wall or oversized piece of furniture.

Costco currently indicates that the Sanji Blue rug may be temporarily unavailable in some delivery areas or warehouses, so availability and price can vary by location.

If you are looking for a rug that brings both comfort and color to a high-traffic room, the Icon Sanji Blue collection is a practical, polished choice.

1967 'King of Folk' Song, Written in a New York Basement, Is Still a Powerful Hit 59 Years Later

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 6:13pm

In the aftermath of his 1966 motorcycle accident, Bob Dylan retreated from the public eye and began making music with The Band in Woodstock, New York. Among the songs recorded during those basement sessions was “I Shall Be Released,” which would become a lasting classic.

Following Dylan’s crash, four members of the Hawks, the group that had backed him during his 1965–1966 world tour, joined him in the Woodstock area. The musicians began working together on music and film projects, eventually producing more than 100 tracks in 1967.

The work began at Dylan’s home before moving to the basement of a house known as “Big Pink.” The recordings included original songs, traditional material and covers, while Dylan took his music in a more intimate direction than the one heard on Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.

“I Shall Be Released” was among the original songs from this period. The lyrics follow a narrator who longs to be free, giving the song its powerful themes of hope and redemption.

The collection eventually became known as The Basement Tapes, although it wasn’t officially released until 1975. The album included 16 tracks featuring Dylan and The Band from 1967, along with eight songs performed by The Band without Dylan that were made between 1967 and 1975.

Dylan’s recording of “I Shall Be Released” stayed unreleased in the vault for years as part of that shelved collection, while other musicians brought their own versions of the song to audiences ahead of him. English musician Boz Burrell, performing under the name Boz, released the first official version as a single in May 1968.

Two months later, The Band included its interpretation on its debut album, Music from Big Pink, with Richard Manuel on lead vocals and Rick Danko and Levon Helm singing harmony.

Dylan eventually revisited the composition. In 1971, he recorded a different arrangement with Happy Traum for Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Vol. II. His original 1967 performance finally received an official release in 1991 on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3. A remixed version later appeared on The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete in 2014.

Nearly six decades later, “I Shall Be Released” still ranks among Dylan’s most acclaimed songs. Rolling Stone placed it No. 6 on its list of the “100 Greatest Bob Dylan Songs,” calling it an “evocative tale of a prisoner yearning for freedom” and a “rock hymn.”

The song also became part of Lilith Fair history in 1999, when Sarah McLachlan and other performers sang it together. Their closing rendition was later included in the 2025 film Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery.

“I Shall Be Released” has also had a long run in Dylan’s live performances. Dylan’s website lists 491 performances of the song between its 1975 live debut and 2008. Following a lengthy hiatus, he brought it back as the closing song of his June 9, 2026, concert at the Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene, Oregon.

He has also performed it with artists including Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, The Band, the Jerry Garcia Band and Amos Lee.

Travel + Leisure’s Top-Ranked U.S. Destination for 2026 Declares Beach Safety Emergency: ‘So Sad to See’

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 6:07pm

California’s coastline may be postcard-perfect, but Mother Nature doesn’t always play nice.

That’s especially true in Carlsbad, where crashing waves and relentless erosion have already taken a toll on the city’s gorgeous shoreline in recent weeks.

Now, officials are taking action by declaring an emergency, remaining in effect through September 15th.

Related: San Diego Zoo on Alert After Unexpected Animal Discovery at Popular Restaurant

Carlsbad, which Travel + Leisure crowned its “Best Place to Travel in 2026,” has declared a local emergency as the city races to stabilize a vulnerable stretch of coastal bluff along South Carlsbad Boulevard.

View this post on Instagram

The emergency declaration will allow officials to fast-track work on the bluff, where experts say immediate repairs are needed to protect the roadway and surrounding area.

The timing is particularly notable for beachgoers. Just days earlier, severe erosion at nearby Tamarack State Beach stripped away so much sand that visitors were left navigating rocks and potentially dangerous conditions, while a public parking lot was forced to close.

Carlsbad has become arguably America’s trendiest destination, home to LEGOLAND, world-class dining, including celebrity chefs like Richard Blais at Ember & Rye, and newly revived commercial flights, much to some locals’ chagrin.

Regardless, more travelers can skip the 40-minute drive to San Diego and fly right in via American and United for a North County escape that’s actually closer to Orange County.

Related: Planning a San Diego Trip? The Zoo Just Welcomed Rare ‘Prehistoric’ Twin Babies

For tourists, Carlsbad remains very much open for business, but the emergency is a reminder to check conditions before heading straight for the sand.

“I’ve been coming to this beach for like 20 years, and it’s just so sad to see,” one beachgoer told NBC 7 San Diego.

Visitors should keep an eye out for posted warnings and temporary closures, particularly along affected stretches of the coast, while stabilization work gets underway.

Nearby beach towns such as Oceanside, Encinitas, and celebrity-riddled Del Mar are not under the same emergency declaration and may be better alternatives for beachgoers looking to squeeze out the last sunny days of summer.

1960s Hitmaker, the Ultimate ‘Jersey Boy,’ Died on This Day 12 Years Ago

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 6:07pm

Everyone knows his songs, but few actually know his name.

Bob Crewee, a legendary singer, songwriter, and producer, helped define the pop landscape of the ’60s and ’70s, leaving his fingerprints on The Four Seasons’ biggest hits, as well as those from other genre fixtures. When he died on Sept. 11, 2014, he left behind a remarkable legacy and a catalog of songs that continues to resonate across generations.

View this post on Instagram

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Crewe kicked off his music career in the mid-’50s, writing doo-wop and early rock hits alongside partner Frank Slay. According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he and Slay first “tasted success” on the charts with “Silhouettes” and “Daddy Cool” for The Rays; “Lah Dee Dah” and “Lucky Ladybug” for Billy and Lillie; and Freddy Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and “Okefenokee.”

In the ’60s, Crewe ventured out as a solo recording artist and released two successful records, Kicks and Crazy in the Heart. But once he joined forces with songwriter Bob Gaudio, his career really took off, with two writing and producing “Sherry” for Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and never looking back.

“Those were incredible days for me,” Crewe said in a 1976 interview with The Advocate. “I had so much fun doing what I wanted to do that I didn’t know it was work. I always thought work was something dreary, something that was alien to one’s being. It took me a long time to realize that I was actually working when I was having such a great time.”

The string of hits that followed included “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Ronnie,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Bye Bye Baby,” “Connie-O,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” with Crewe helping shape the distinctive sound of The Four Seasons built around Valli’s unmistakable falsetto and the group’s tight harmonies.

As the decade progressed, Crewe launched DynoVoice Records, guiding girl group The Toys and producing garage-rock hits for Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels. He also formed The Bob Crewe Generation, a pop-oriented instrumental group led by Crewe whose 1967 hit “Music to Watch Girls By” became an instrumental smash.

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Crewe worked with Charles Fox on the music for Dino De Laurentiis’ cult-classic sci-fi film Barbarella, starring Jane Fonda, and then successfully transitioned into the disco world, co-writing the monster hit “Lady Marmalade” with Kenny Nolan. The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped re-establish Patti LaBelle as a major player in the biz.

In another winning partnership, Crewe and Gaudio joined Jerry Corbetta to write the song “You’re Looking Like Love to Me,” recorded by Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson in 1983.

In 1985, Crew was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, but in his later years, he shifted his focus toward fine art, philanthropy, and cementing his musical legacy. He also watched the massively successful Jersey Boys musical move to Broadway in 2005, win four Tony Awards (including Best Musical), and score a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2007, with Crewe credited as lyricist.

Crewe died in 2014 following complications of a fall he suffered several years earlier. According to his brother, the ultimate Jersey Boy wanted only a few words on his tombstone.

“There was never enough.”

Stars of New Rom-Com 'Falling Into Place' Say Filming Was, Incredibly, Like 'Art Imitating Life' (Exclusive)

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 6:05pm

Shortly after graduating from high school, Alvina August and Nathan Witte both made conscious decisions to follow their hearts and pursue careers in acting. For August, it was a 180-degree turn from her pre-med plans, and for Witte, it was a stroke of inspiration as he grappled with his career plans, suddenly realizing that acting would allow him to try out “every profession” in various roles.

If either of them had any doubt about the paths they chose, their time filming Hallmark’s new rom-com Falling Into Place was a powerful reminder they’re right where they belong.

“There were so many signs of things that were just kind of happening, reaffirming everything (in our lives) and that was the same for everyone,” August told Parade of the film shoot. “Just beautiful, serendipitous things that everyone could take from this (experience) in some really magical way. It was so cool.”

Falling Into Place sweetly executes the tried-and-true Hallmark trope in which our big city heroine has to temporarily return to her small hometown, where a surprise love interest throws a wrench in her plans to go back to her busy, fancy life among the skyscrapers. Here, career-driven Kaia and her high school bestie, James, reunite back home and, just for fun, revisit an old childhood bucket list they made of goals they once hoped to achieve during their town’s annual Fall Festival.

The time together inspires them to reflect on who they were in high school, the choices they’ve made since, and what kind of future they want. The script, from longtime Hallmark screenwriter Ansley Gordon, unexpectedly allowed August and Witte to do the same.

“Honestly, it was like art imitating life,” August told Parade. “I can draw so many things from this script that are just like, ‘Oh, this pertains to my life. Is she speaking to me? How do they know this?'”

One of the wildest synchronicities, August said, was that her Falling Into Place character is named Kaia, which happens to be the name of August’s three-year-old daughter, whom she shares with fellow Hallmark star and Virgin River alum Marco Grazzini.

“Nobody knew that,” August marveled.

Alvina August and Nathan Witte Say ‘Falling Into Place’ Reminded Them of the Power of Getting Clear

She and Witte said there were also lots of reminders about how much it matters to get clear about what they want in life — whether in the present or in the future. One example they witnessed was with their director, Angie Nolan.

“Angie was like, ‘I really feel like I want to create an environment that is joy. That’s all I want,'” August recalled. “And then the very next day, we’re all at lunch, just dancing around and goofing around. And she’s like, ‘This was exactly what I was talking about!'”

That reminded Witte of how he got clear after high school on what he wanted his life to look and feel like, telling Parade, “I knew I wasn’t going to do post-secondary, and I was struggling with what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I had no idea, I couldn’t pick something, so I scared my higher self. I said, ‘If you don’t figure it out by the time you’re 25, I’m joining the army,’ And I didn’t want to join the army!”

Enamored with the out-of-blue idea of taking up acting, Witte found a newspaper ad in Calgary about learning to act and model. He signed up, but when he felt like he was getting “duped” after paying for six months of lessons, he trusted his gut and moved to Vancouver, known as “Hollywood North” because so many movies and shows are filmed there, including Falling Into Place.

“I’ve been here for 20 years doing it, haven’t looked back,” he smiled — and he’s not kidding. Witte has been in at least 20 Hallmark movies, including 2020’s My Best Friend’s Bouquet and August’s Texas Two-Step with Heather Hemmens and Brendan Penny.

August, meanwhile, was reminded that sometimes in life, others have seen her gifts and potential before she did — including her high school classmates, who voted her “Most Likely to Be Popular,” a title that confused her.

“I was gonna go to med school, so I was like, ‘Where am I gonna be popular at the hospital?’ But I was also doing other things on the side, musical theater and stuff like that. So there was a part of me that enjoyed that stuff, but I was like, ‘No, I’m going this way! I’m doing science!'” It’s kind of a funny thing — now I look back on it, like, ‘Oh, maybe they saw something that I didn’t yet.'”

Eventually, she realized, “I’m not cut out for (medical school). I think my soul would have slowly died, not to sound dramatic, but I just I think I’m an artist, and I just never really realized it until pretty late. But maybe others could see it.”

August, who’s also been in her fair share of Hallmark movies, most recently in 2022’s A Second Chance at Love, hopes this latest project inspires viewers the way it did her and Witte.

“So many things were just so interesting and wonderful, and yeah, I’m just so grateful,” she said. “I loved it.”

Falling Into Place premieres on Saturday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET and will be available to stream the following day on Hallmark+.

How a Brief Run-In With Gwyneth Paltrow Saved a Woman's Life on 9/11

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 6:04pm

Twenty-five years after September 11, one survivor still remembers the brief delay that kept her from reaching her World Trade Center office. New Yorker Lara Lundstrom Clarke was 24 and working on the South Tower’s 77th floor when a chance encounter with Gwyneth Paltrow disrupted her commute that morning.

Paltrow, unaware of the role she’d play, delayed Clarke just long enough to keep her off her usual train and away from her desk when the attacks began. Clarke first shared her survival story with the Morton Report in 2011.

According to USA Today, the September 11 attacks killed 2,977 people and left countless families and survivors to rebuild their lives in the aftermath. For Clarke, one small collision with fate meant she wasn’t among them.

How Did Lara Lundstrom Clarke Cross Paths With Gwyneth Paltrow?

Clarke had been rollerblading along the Hudson River before heading to work. As she crossed 7th Avenue to catch her train, a silver Mercedes SUV suddenly approached.

“It was one of those mornings that felt good, you had a little skip in your step. What the heck, I always cut across 7th Avenue,” Clarke later told The Morton Report in 2011.

“Then all of a sudden a silver Mercedes SUV came barreling down towards me.”

Both stopped, resulting in an awkward back-and-forth over who should move first. “I stopped, and they screeched to a halt. Then it developed into one of those classic who goes first situations. It got ridiculous. Then I made eye contact with the Mercedes driver. OMG, it was Gwyneth Paltrow,” Clarke recalled.

Paltrow eventually waved her across.

How Did the Encounter Change Clarke’s Morning?

Those few moments were enough for Clarke to miss her usual train. “At that time I was annoyed at everything that had made me late that day, including Gwyneth Paltrow,” she admitted. Clarke took the next train and arrived near the World Trade Center at approximately 8:47 a.m.

The coincidence bears an eerie resemblance to Paltrow’s 1998 movie Sliding Doors, which follows a woman whose life takes dramatically different paths depending on whether she catches a train, the Hollywood Reporter states.

What Did Clarke See When She Reached the World Trade Center?

Clarke described finding “total chaos” when she arrived. After making her way outside, she looked toward the towers. “I looked up and there was a big gaping hole in the World Trade Center,” she recalled. “That was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. My office exploded.” Clarke said that four of her approximately 170 coworkers died in the attacks.

Has Clarke Ever Thanked Gwyneth Paltrow?

The encounter has stayed with Clarke for decades. “If I had made that train I would have been at my desk on the 77th floor of 2 World Trade Center,” she said.

Clarke later wrote Paltrow a letter explaining what happened and has said she has recurring dreams about thanking the actress in person. According to Inside Edition, Clarke wrote: “The plane literally came into my office. I want to thank you for changing my fate on that terrible day.”

What felt like an irritating delay on an ordinary commute became one of those tiny, unknowable turns that divided Clarke’s life into before and after.

Today marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks, which killed 2,977 people across the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, not including the 19 hijackers, according to NPR.

In the years since, federal data show that at least twice as many people have died from illnesses tied to toxic exposure at Ground Zero, a toll that has now surpassed the death count from the day itself, KCRA reports.

Why Wasn't 'The View' on Today?

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 5:56pm

This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which took the lives of almost 3000 souls. Many major television networks, including ABC, which produces The View, aired special coverage live commemorating those lost, instead of running their daytime program.

ABC News ran its coverage titled 9/11 25 Years Later: America Remembers, which features footage and previously broadcast clips from the 9/11 Memorial, and a ceremony naming all of those lost that day read by victims’ family members. Other shows impacted include Live with Kelly and Mark, parts of the Today show and Good Morning America.

However, hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro taped a special segment that was shared on social media, with Behar starting the conversation saying that “young Americans don’t feel connected to the impact that the attacks had on the country,” and asked her fellow talk show hosts where they were on September 11, 2001.

Griffin got emotional, saying that at the time, she was in junior high living in California. Her mom was on a trip in New Jersey and was planning to attend the opening of the New York Stock Exchange with a friend, but since she was running late, her mom was still in Hoboken when the Twin Towers were attacked.

“But you guys remember, cell phones were not going through; you couldn’t get in touch with loved ones,” Griffin said while fighting back tears. “I didn’t know for hours if my mom was alive.”

Meanwhile, Hostin, who was a federal prosecutor in Washington DC at the time, explained that one of the planes hit the Pentagon and she “could smell, in the air, just the fumes and I could see the fire and it was so tragic.”

Haines also pointed out that many people, including those stuck in the towers and first responders, later died after developing health issues and illnesses due to the terrible air quality from that day. The New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, recently made 170,000 pages of records about the aftermath of the attacks public this week, which can be found via an online portal.

The United States is observing the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with ceremonies and local tributes all across the country. A main ceremony was held on the National September 11 Memorial & Museum plaza in Downtown Manhattan, with Vice President JD Vance and all four living former U.S. presidents in attendance. In addition, organizers added a seventh moment of silence to specifically honor the more than 9000 first responders, recovery workers and survivors who have died since 2001 from illnesses related to toxic exposure and bad air quality at Ground Zero.

The View will return to its regularly scheduled program on Monday on ABC.

This Japanese-Style Bed Is Stylish, Durable and Assembled in Less Than 10 Minutes

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 5:55pm

Your bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in the room, so it can set the tone for the entire space. A bulky frame can make a bedroom feel crowded, while a basic metal base often leaves the room looking unfinished. If you want your bedroom to feel more relaxed, elevated and easy to decorate, starting with a simple wood platform bed can make a huge difference.

But looks are only part of the equation. A bed frame needs to feel sturdy when you get in and out of bed, stay quiet when you move during the night and support your mattress properly. Nobody wants a frame that begins creaking after a few months or requires a full day of frustrating assembly before you can use it.

Kana Japanese Joinery Bed (Oak), $349.99 (originally $519.99) at FlexiSpot

Amazon

The FlexiSpot Kana Japanese Joinery Bed is designed for people who want a minimalist bedroom without giving up practical features. Made from solid rubberwood, the platform frame has a warm, natural look that pairs well with just about any bedding style. It is available in Oak for a lighter, airy feel or Dark Walnut for a deeper, more grounded finish.

Its simple shape is inspired by Japanese joinery, a construction approach that allows the frame’s pieces to fit securely together. Rather than relying on a complicated pile of bolts and tools, the Kana bed uses interlocking wood components, wedges, a reinforced center beam and supportive center legs. The result is meant to feel stable and quiet, with FlexiSpot rating the frame to support up to 1,500 pounds.

Related: Target’s Antique-Style Kitchen Find Looks Far More Expensive Than It Actually Is

The setup is another standout. FlexiSpot says the frame can be assembled in roughly 10 minutes, which is especially appealing if you are moving into a new apartment, furnishing a first home or replacing an old bed frame without wanting an all-day project. The simple construction also makes it easier to take apart if you move later.

The built-in headboard sits at a 96-degree angle, giving you a comfortable spot to lean back with a book, laptop, or morning coffee. It is not overly tall or bulky, so it still keeps the room looking open and streamlined. The mattress also sits in a recessed area designed to help prevent shifting while you sleep.

There is 10.5 inches of clearance underneath the bed, which leaves room for storage bins, extra bedding, seasonal clothing or luggage. That makes the frame especially helpful in smaller bedrooms where a little extra storage goes a long way.

The Kana bed is not the cheapest platform frame on the market, but it feels like a more long-term purchase than a basic metal alternative. If you are looking for a quiet, solid-wood foundation that gives your bedroom a clean, calming look, this FlexiSpot bed is a strong option

1976 Iconic Ballad, Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Is Still a Beloved Hit 50 Years Later

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 5:43pm

Before Evita became an international stage phenomenon, one of its most famous songs was already climbing the pop charts.

British singer and actress Julie Covington introduced “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” on the musical’s 1976 concept album, giving Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice a massive hit before audiences had seen their story of Eva Perón performed in a theater. The soaring ballad reached No. 1 in the U.K. and ultimately became inseparable from Evita itself.

Lloyd Webber composed the music, while Rice wrote the lyrics.

The pair had previously found success together with Jesus Christ Superstar, another project that began as a concept album before becoming a stage musical. They followed a similar path with Evita, telling the story of the controversial Argentine first lady through a two-record album released in 1976.

Covington was chosen to sing the role of Eva.

“Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” accompanies a pivotal moment in the story, with Eva addressing the Argentine people from the balcony of the Casa Rosada after her husband, Juan Perón, becomes president. Its stately melody and emotionally direct lyrics gave the still-unstaged musical an obvious centerpiece.

“Had the tune been given to me by Andrew and he’d said, ‘Let’s make this a hit song for somebody,’ I’d have written a pretty average lyric,” Rice told The Guardian. “But because it was being seen in a show – with this lady dressed to the nines, speaking to her working-class voters, the people that she claimed to represent – I was able to write a different lyric that actually worked.”

The song also underwent changes before reaching its familiar form.

Lloyd Webber and Rice originally worked with a version called “It’s Only Your Lover Returning” before reshaping the number. The now-famous title reportedly came later, giving the song a phrase that immediately connected it to Eva and Argentina.

Covington’s recording took off on its own.

Released as a single late in 1976, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” reached No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart in 1977, spending three weeks at the top. Covington declined to take the role when Evita moved to the stage, and Elaine Paige originated Eva in the 1978 West End production.

“I’ll never forget the opening,” Paige told The Guardian. “When I left the stage, the audience began chanting ‘Evita! Elaine!’ I’d just reached my dressing room, up two flights of stairs, when the manager called me back down. I stood in the wings, unable to believe what was happening. He had to push me back on. Then we had the most fantastic party on the Thames, in a boat called the Tattershall Castle. There was champagne and all the glitterati from the industry came. At 1am, someone went to buy the next day’s papers, and there was my face splashed all over the front pages.”

The ballad continued finding new voices.

Patti LuPone performed it in the original Broadway production, while Madonna recorded it for the 1996 film adaptation of Evita. Her version became an international hit and brought the song to another generation.

“Working on Evita with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice,” Madonna told Rolling Stone in 2009, was the biggest challenge of her career to date. “It’s a whole different singing sensibility. I had to seriously work with a vocal coach to sing with strength and conviction. A lot of the stuff was recorded live, and I was in the recording studio with strange producers and writers, a huge orchestra and huge shoes to fill.”

Fifty years after Covington first recorded it, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” has long outgrown its beginnings on a concept album. Its journey from recording studio to pop charts, stage, and screen helped make it one of Lloyd Webber and Rice’s most recognizable compositions and one of musical theater’s enduring ballads.

7 Best Hairstyles That Hold Up in Humidity for Women Over 50, According to a Celebrity Stylist

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 5:22pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Humidity has a special talent for taking a perfectly good hair day and turning it into a hostage situation. The second the temperature climbs and moisture hits the air, strands can puff up, frizz out, lose their shape or somehow manage to do it all at once. And as hair changes with age, that battle can feel even more frustrating, especially when dryness and texture changes make keeping everything smooth a little trickier.

But you don’t need to spend your time fighting your hair with a flat iron and a bathroom full of products. The best humidity-proof hairstyles over 50 are the ones that work with your hair, not against it, giving you enough structure to hold their shape while leaving room for natural texture.

From short, sweat-proof hairstyles that stay off your neck to easy styles that disguise a little frizz when the forecast is basically 90 percent humidity, there are plenty of ways to keep your hair looking good without making it a whole production.

So, if you’re wondering how to stop frizzy hair over 50 or simply want a low-maintenance hairstyle that can survive heat, sweat and a little atmospheric chaos, you’re in the right place. Read on for seven humidity-resistant hairstyles that celebrity stylists say can keep their shape long after the temperature starts climbing.

The Porosity Shift: Why Does Humidity Affect Mature Hair More as We Age?

Humidity can be especially unforgiving on mature hair because the hair itself is changing as we age. Over time, “hair naturally becomes drier, finer and often more porous,” Franck Izquierdo, pro stylist and co-founder of IGK Hair Care, explains, while hormonal changes can also impact “density, texture and how much natural oil the scalp produces.”

That combination makes it easier for moisture in the air to disrupt the hair, leading to the “frizz, puffiness and a style losing its shape” that can make humid days particularly annoying.

The fix isn’t piling on more styling products, either. Izquierdo says mature hair benefits from “hydration and products that help smooth and seal the cuticle,” emphasizing that “you don’t necessarily need more product; you need the right product and a really good base.”

Leave-in products can help when needed, while “limiting excessive heat” keeps already-dry strands from becoming even more unruly.

What Hairstyles and Cuts Hold up Best in High Humidity for Women Over 50?

When humidity hits, the best haircuts are the ones that don’t require every strand to cooperate.

“The best cuts and styles for women 50+ in high humidity are the ones that work with the hair’s natural texture and density rather than working against it,” says Maria McCool, pro stylist and Calista founder, pointing to textured pixies, well-shaped bobs and soft layered cuts as especially reliable options.

She loves “intentional texture” because it adds “volume, softness and dimension” to finer or more mature hair, while any humidity-induced movement still looks purposeful instead of frizzy.

If you prefer longer hair, controlled styles like a low bun, French twist or half-up look can keep things contained without feeling severe, and McCool says an elevated accessory can make those humid-day saves even easier. On particularly unruly days, she reaches for a clip to quickly pull the hair up while keeping the overall look chic and put-together.

7 Best Hairstyles That Hold up in Humidity (From Chic Buns to Textured Crops) 1. Textured Pixie

Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

The textured pixie is basically the humid-weather cheat code because a little frizz or movement only makes it better. “This style is almost humidity-proof because the movement is part of the look,” Izquierdo says, pointing to Jamie Lee Curtis as the perfect example.

The secret is not trying to flatten every piece into submission. Instead, rough-dry with your fingers, then use a small amount of lightweight styling cream or paste to separate individual pieces. “The texture is intentional,” he adds, so when the humidity adds a little extra movement, it looks like part of the plan.

2. Slicked-Back Bun

Jeff Spicer/Getty Images for BFI

Few styles can turn a sweaty, humid hair day into an actual look quite like a slicked-back bun. Izquierdo says it’s one of his favorites because it keeps the hair controlled while still benefiting from a little natural texture. The trick is knowing when to stop.

“Avoid pulling it excessively tight,” he tells Parade, particularly if your hair is fine or thinning. Leave a little softness around the face and suddenly the weather that was trying to ruin your hair is practically doing the styling for you.

3. Chic Braids

Gregg DeGuire/WireImage

Braids are the ultimate two-for-one hairstyle—they keep your hair contained now and give you gorgeous texture when you take them out later. Gina Rivera, founder of Phenix Salon Suites and stylist to Grammy and Coachella clients, just has one very important caveat: “Be careful they are not too tight!”

Worn loosely, they can keep frizz under control while creating a soft wave as they come undone. In other words, even your post-braid hair gets something out of the deal.

4. Layered Bob

Rodin Eckenroth/Getty Images for Netflix

A layered bob is a great middle ground for humid weather because you get shape and movement without having to commit to a super-short cut. The key, Izquierdo says, is “avoiding a shape that relies on being pin-straight.”

That distinction matters when the forecast is sticky. Instead of watching your carefully flat-ironed bob expand the second you walk outside, a cut with some built-in movement can let the texture happen without throwing off the entire shape.

5. Low Ponytail

Marc Piasecki/Getty Images

Rivera calls the low pony “a classic” that’s “easy to achieve,” recommending a leave-in conditioner before drying the hair straight and pulling it back low at the nape. It’s a particularly good option when you want your hair off your face and neck without going full updo, and the simple silhouette leaves room for a little softness and texture rather than demanding humidity-defying perfection.

6. Undone Bun

HLL/Imazins via Getty Images

The undone bun is exactly what you want when the weather has already made it clear that a sleek blowout is not happening. “This is really perfect for humidity because the style is controlled rather than dependent on a smooth blowout,” Izquierdo says.

Pull the hair back, twist it loosely and let a few pieces escape around the face instead of fighting them. The beauty of this look is that the little imperfections are the point, so humidity can add texture without completely derailing your hairstyle.

7. Classic Chignon

Mike Marsland/WireImage

For weddings, dinners, parties, or any other occasion where you need your hair to stay put, Rivera recommends an elevated chignon as “a great way to hide frizz” while keeping everything together “in a chic way.”

The prep is refreshingly simple: start with dry hair, use a leave-in conditioner and “don’t over brush,” she says, adding that you should use “less pins as possible.”

Pull the hair into a low ponytail, gently twist it until it coils around itself, tuck the ends underneath and pin. The result is elegant enough for a special occasion but practical enough to survive a little humid weather.

Beyond Hairspray: What Anti-Frizz Products and Cuticle Sealers Actually Fight Moisture?

The best anti-frizz routine starts long before you reach for hairspray. “Controlling frizz means keeping hair healthy, hydrated and protected at every step of your routine,” McCool says, starting with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and a weekly treatment, like Calista JOUSSE Mend Mask, to “deeply hydrate the hair, smooth the cuticle, and keep strands strong and resilient.”

Izquierdo agrees that the products that really matter are the ones that “create a lightweight barrier around the hair,” which is why he likes working a smoothing product (he loves the IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray) through damp hair before styling, then finishing with just “a tiny amount of serum or balm over the surface.”

For mature hair that needs moisture without the weight, he recommends layering a lightweight leave-in underneath rather than piling on heavy oils, while McCool suggests a smoothing cream before styling to help block humidity and a lightweight oil afterward to tame flyaways and “help seal the cuticle.”

The goal is a smooth, hydrated base that can withstand moisture, not a mountain of product sitting on top of your hair.

Sweat-Free and Sleek: How To Style Hair in Humidity Without Heavy Heat Damage

When humidity is working overtime, the instinct can be to reach for more heat, but that can actually leave mature hair more vulnerable to frizz and dryness. Izquierdo explains that the better strategy is to “use heat strategically” by cutting back on blow-dryer days and keeping hot tools on low or medium whenever possible.

And if your hair is naturally wavy or curly, there’s even less reason to battle it with a brush and blow-dryer. Izquierdo recommends applying leave-in and curl product to very damp hair, scrunching it in, then air-drying or diffusing on low heat. The result is hair that works with the weather instead of fighting it, while keeping unnecessary heat damage to a minimum.

The Daily Touch Mistake: What Common Habits Ruin Your Anti-Humidity Hold Post-Salon?

If you want your salon blowout to actually survive the humidity, one of the hardest habits to break might be the simplest one: stop touching your hair.

“Over-touching your hair is the fastest way to undo a salon blowout,” McCool says, since running your hands through your strands can “disturb the style, add oils and moisture, and encourage frizz.”

The same goes for over-brushing once your hair is already set and piling on product in an attempt to keep everything in place can backfire by weighing hair down and killing its movement.

McCool’s advice is to “start with the minimum amount and add more only as needed,” while building humidity protection into your routine from the beginning instead of trying to rescue your hair once the frizz has already arrived. Basically, admire the blowout, resist the urge to fuss with it and let it do its thing.

1961 Iconic Ballad, With Singer Nicknamed ‘The Big O,’ Is Still a Generational Hit 65 Years Later

Fri, 09/11/2026 - 5:15pm

An unexpected encounter with an old love gave Roy Orbison the emotional spark for one of the most enduring recordings of his career.

The singer known as “The Big O” released “Crying” in 1961, turning the pain of seeing someone he still loved into a dramatic ballad that showcased his extraordinary vocal range. Written by Orbison with Joe Melson, the song became a major hit and eventually inspired interpretations by artists across rock, pop, and country music.

Orbison reportedly conceived the song after running into a former girlfriend.

“I was dating this girl and we broke up,” Orbison later shared in an interview. “Two or three years later, I went to the barber shop to get a haircut and looked across the street, and there was the girl I had split up with. I wanted to go over and say, ‘Let’s forget about what happened and carry on.’ But I was very stubborn. So I got in the car and drove down the street and said, ‘Boy, you really made a mistake. You didn’t play that right at all.’ I would say that I had tears in my eyes—I’ll go that far—but whether I was physically crying or just crying inside, it’s the same thing.”

Although he initially insisted he was fine after their encounter, the experience stayed with him. He and Melson transformed that attempt to conceal heartbreak into “Crying,” whose narrator similarly begins by claiming he had moved on before admitting just how devastated he remains.

The arrangement makes that realization increasingly difficult to hide.

“Crying” starts with Orbison singing quietly before gradually building in intensity, accompanied by strings and backing vocals. By its conclusion, his voice has climbed into the soaring upper register that helped distinguish him from many of his early rock ‘n’ roll contemporaries.

“Immediately I thought of a past experience and just retold that, was the way that came about,” Orbison told NME of his now-famous vocal performance. “It was the retelling of a thing with a girlfriend that I had had. I couldn’t tell you right now what notes I hit at the end of the song, or anything.”

The record became another major success in Orbison’s remarkable early-1960s run.

Released by Monument Records, “Crying” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Cash Box chart. It followed hits including “Only the Lonely” and “Running Scared,” the latter of which had given Orbison his first No. 1 on the Hot 100 earlier in 1961.

“Crying” soon proved equally adaptable to other voices.

Don McLean revived the song nearly two decades later, scoring an international hit with his version. It reached No. 1 in the U.K. in 1980 and later returned Orbison’s composition to the American charts.

Orbison himself revisited the song with k.d. long for the 1987 film Hiding Out. Their duet earned the pair a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, bringing fresh attention to the song shortly before Orbison’s death in 1988.

Sixty-five years after its release, “Crying” remains a striking demonstration of why Orbison’s voice was so distinctive. What begins almost like a private admission grows into a towering display of heartbreak, one that helped make “The Big O” one of popular music’s most unforgettable singers.
