1970 Folk-Rock Song, Written in a Few Minutes in London, Became One of the Best-Selling Singles of All Time
While streaming has taken music success to another level, there have still been hits from before the era of streaming that were so successful that it’s hard to comprehend. In fact, one of the best-selling physical singles of all time was a track written in just 10 minutes in 1970, only for it to go on to have a legendary legacy over the decades since.
The song “In The Summertime” by Mungo Jerry began as a fun and simple ode to summer written by 24-year-old Ray Dorset while he was working for the company Timex in London, England. Not long after Dorset completed the song, he recorded it in a studio in London with his rising British rock band, Mungo Jerry.
It became the band’s debut single when it was released in June 1970, shooting Mungo Jerry to stardom with its surprise success. It was later released on the band’s second studio album, Electronically Tested, in 1971 as well.
“In The Summertime” was a chart-topper in many different countries, including Mungo Jerry’s own Britain, as well as Norway, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada, France, Ireland, Mexico, and more. In the U.S., it was so close to topping the Billboard Hot 100, but it ended up peaking at No. 3, which is still an impressive feat.

Since then, the song’s success has only grown, and it has reportedly sold tens of millions of copies. According to Far Out Magazine, “In The Summertime” is the third-highest-selling physical single of all time with 30 million copies, only behind Bing Crosby‘s “White Christmas” in the top spot and Elton John‘s “Something About the Way You Look Tonight”/ “Candle in the Wind.”
Others on the list include the Ink Spots’ “If I Didn’t Care” from 1939, Whitney Houston‘s “I Will Always Love You,” and Celine Dion‘s “My Heart Will Go On,” among others.

The editorial team at Rotten Tomatoes ranked their favorite films from the ’90s, compiling a list of 185 of the greatest movies of the decade. Ranked alongside beloved flicks like Martin Scorsese’s 1990 masterwork Goodfellas at No. 47 and Harold Ramis’ 1993 comedy Groundhog Day at No. 37, David O. Russell’s 1999 satirical war film Three Kings secured the No. 39 spot.

The action-comedy utilized gritty dark humor, distinctive experimental cinematography and fast-paced action sequences to engage broad audiences while offering subtle commentary on U.S. foreign policy.
While reflecting on the film at the 2020 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Russell discussed the perspective behind the story: “This is a post-war movie. You don’t understand war until it’s over.” Recognizing the creative freedom of the era, he continued, “That was an exciting year to be in cinema, it was a roaring fire. You could take a risk. This movie made as much profit on DVD as it did in theaters.”
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film maintains a nearly perfect critical consensus score of 94% based on 131 reviews. Its audience score doesn’t disappoint either, securing an impressive 77% from over 100,000 reviews.
Twenty-seven years after its release, Three Kings remains a defining classic that continues to draw viewers across generations. Today, the movie is available to stream on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.

1973 Country Rock Song, Covered by Waylon Jennings, Is Still a Powerful Hit 53 Years Later
The opening flute riff of “Can’t You See” hardly sounds like the beginning of a song filled with desperation. Once Toy Caldwell starts singing, however, The Marshall Tucker Band classic quickly reveals itself as one of the more anguished breakup songs of the 1970s.
Written by Caldwell, “Can’t You See” appeared on the South Carolina group’s self-titled 1973 debut album. Its combination of country storytelling, blues, rock, and an unmistakable flute part helped establish the band’s sound before Waylon Jennings carried the song even deeper into country music a few years later.
Caldwell was the Marshall Tucker Band’s lead guitarist and one of its principal songwriters, but “Can’t You See” also put him behind the microphone.
Rather than regular lead singer Doug Gray, Caldwell sang the studio recording himself, giving its increasingly desperate lyrics a rough-edged delivery. The narrator imagines escaping his heartbreak by jumping aboard a freight train and traveling as far away as possible.
“I think we believe him,” drummer Paul T. Riddle told Ultimate Classic Rock of Caldwell’s performance on the track. “He said they’re just honest [songs]. And I thought that was so profound. I think that’s the key. When you would hear Toy sing that song, he would just sing it like he was never going to take another breath and he would play it that way. And I think that’s what touches people.”
The track also gave Jerry Eubanks an unforgettable introduction.
His flute opens the song before Caldwell’s acoustic guitar enters, an unconventional combination that became central to the recording. Eubanks’ flute and saxophone would remain important parts of the Marshall Tucker Band’s genre-blurring approach.
“Can’t You See” wasn’t an immediate pop smash.
The band released the song as a single in 1973 and again in 1977, when it reached No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100. By then, the Marshall Tucker Band had found greater chart success with songs including “Heard It in a Love Song,”which became its biggest pop hit.
Jennings recognized the country potential in Caldwell’s composition even earlier.
The outlaw country legend recorded “Can’t You See” for his 1976 album Are You Ready for the Country. His rendition reached No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart, giving the song one of its strongest commercial showings.
Other artists have taken it on over the decades, but the Marshall Tucker Band’s original has remained a cornerstone of the group’s catalog. Its longevity was formally recognized when the recording was certified platinum by the RIAA decades after its release.
“I think that one reason that these songs are timeless is that the period of time that Toy Caldwell wrote them, there was an American-ism thing going on,” Gray told Billboard in 2014. “You were doing stuff for your kids, and that’s how people are wanting to do it now. Every record of ours is a reference is to moving.”
Fifty-three years later, “Can’t You See” still occupies the space where country, blues, and Southern rock collide. Caldwell’s wounded vocal may tell a story about wanting to get away, but the song itself never went anywhere, instead becoming one of the enduring recordings of the Marshall Tucker Band’s career.

Dan + Shay are hitting the road and they have their tour wardrobe figured out.
The country duo’s “The Young Tour” kicks off today, September 11, at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana.
“On our last tour, we played in Noblesville, and Indy’s just always so great to us. It’s just like the best country music fans, just good people. We love the Midwest. We’re suckers for the Midwest,” Dan Smyers, who is one half of the duo alongside fellow vocalist and songwriter Shay Mooney, told 10TV last month.
Ahead of their first show, they gave fans a peek at their tour bus closet, revealing a surprising amount of one very familiar brand.

A massive data breach involving IDScan has exposed driver’s license information on a scale that should get consumers’ attention. The company confirmed on Sept. 4 that an unauthorized third party may have accessed or copied customer information stored in its cloud, including full names and driver’s license or other government-issued identification numbers.
Later, TechCrunch reported Sept. 10 that a dark-web database contained searchable driver’s license information for more than 150 million people in the United States and Canada, including photos. The FBI is currently investigating the incident.
If your driver’s license information may be part of the breach, you don’t have to wait for confirmed fraud before taking precautions. Here are three steps worth taking now.

1. Contact Your DMV About the Compromised Driver’s LicenseA stolen driver’s license number isn’t something you can change yourself.
The Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov guidance recommends contacting your state motor vehicle agency when driver’s license information is lost or stolen. Depending on the state, officials may be able to flag the license number or recommend applying for a replacement.
Requirements vary by state, so ask your DMV specifically what it recommends for license information exposed in a data breach. Also, getting a replacement card does not necessarily erase every risk associated with information that has already been copied. Your name, license number and address may still be useful in impersonation attempts.
Last year, Dr. Holly Schiff, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist, told Parade that when a scammer gains access to your address, it “can open you up to several risks…and even make you vulnerable to unwanted attention like harassment, [and] spam solicitations.”

The FTC says a freeze prevents new credit accounts from being opened while it is active. It is free to place or lift, does not affect your credit score and remains in effect until you remove it. Just keep in mind that you must contact Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately to freeze all three credit files.
You can also add a fraud alert. This tells businesses to verify your identity before issuing new credit and lasts one year. Unlike a freeze, you only need to contact one credit bureau; that bureau must notify the other two.
Even IDScan itself is advising affected consumers to consider credit freezes and fraud alerts.
A credit freeze is an important first step, but it won’t catch every form of identity misuse. Aura adds three-bureau credit monitoring, dark-web alerts and financial account monitoring to help you spot suspicious activity sooner.
3. Watch for Signs Someone Is Using Your IdentityFreezing your credit doesn’t mean you can stop paying attention.

Save copies of breach notices, suspicious bills, credit reports and any correspondence with financial institutions or government agencies. Those records can make it easier to establish what happened.

1977 Rock Song, Built Around ‘Damn Your Lies,’ Is Still a Powerful Hit 49 Years Later
In 1977, Fleetwood Mac released a rock song filled with some of the most cutting lyrics of the band’s career: “Damn your love/ Damn your lies.”
Nearly five decades later, “The Chain” remains one of the most recognizable songs from Rumours. But unlike most songs, it didn’t begin with one songwriter sitting down and creating it from beginning to end. Instead, Fleetwood Mac pieced it together from fragments of several different compositions, according to the book “Never Break the Chain: Fleetwood Mac and the Making of Rumours.”
“The Chain” is the only Fleetwood Mac song credited to all five members of the band’s famed Rumours lineup: Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.
The song’s complicated history began during the Rumours sessions with a Christine McVie composition called “Keep Me There.” During an early recording session, John McVie played the bass progression that would eventually become the explosive final section of “The Chain.”
That ending was ultimately the only part of the original recording the band kept.
From there, the musical puzzle grew.
Buckingham repurposed the introduction of “Lola (My Love),” a song he’d previously recorded with Nicks for their 1973 album Buckingham Nicks. Nicks, meanwhile, had lyrics from another song that included the devastating lines, “If you don’t love me now, you will never love me again.”
Buckingham asked Nicks if the band could use the lyrics, and she agreed. Nicks and Christine McVie then reworked the words for the first section of the song.
In an interview with Classic Rock, Fleetwood said of the song’s origins, “‘The Chain’ basically came out of a jam. It was put together, as distinct from someone literally sitting down and writing a song. It was very much collectively a band composition.”
Even the recording itself reflected that patchwork construction. Parts were physically assembled by splicing tape with a razor blade at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California. Buckingham later explained that the song was called “The Chain” because it was “a bunch of pieces.”
Yet somehow those pieces produced a song that continues to sound enormous 49 years later.
Fleetwood added, “But it really only became a song when Stevie wrote some words. Lindsey arranged and made a song out of all the bits and pieces that we were putting down onto tape. And then once it was arranged and we knew what we were doing, we went in and recorded it. But it ultimately becomes a band thing anyway, because we all have so much of our own individual style, our own stamp that makes the sound of Fleetwood Mac.”
“The Chain” has accumulated more than 1.5 billion Spotify streams, and its famous instrumental section became closely associated with Formula One coverage in the United Kingdom. The song was also used in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and appeared in the trailer for the 2025 movie F1.
Its sound continues to connect with listeners who weren’t around when Rumours arrived.
During a reaction to “The Chain,” singers Terry and Kaniyia immediately heard echoes of much newer pop culture. Kaniyia compared its atmosphere to HBO’s The Last of Us, while Terry said it reminded him of Ryan Coogler’s 2025 film Sinners.
As the harmonies intensified, Kaniyia declared, “They’re taking us to church!”
Forty-nine years after Fleetwood Mac assembled “The Chain” from a collection of musical fragments, that reaction may explain its staying power as well as anything: The song still sounds like five people putting everything they had into keeping the chain together.

1969 Hit by Led Zeppelin Ranked Among the 'Best Songs of the 1960s'
While Led Zeppelin certainly hit their stride after the release of 1971’s Led Zeppelin IV, the 1969 song “Good Times Bad Times,” off the band’s debut record, Led Zeppelin, is arguably still one of their most memorable tracks.
In fact, Collider recently included the 2-minute-and-46-second guitar-riff-heavy tune on the publication’s list of the “Best Songs of the 1960s.” The publication put “Good Times Bad Times” at the ranking’s ninth spot, arguing it’s actually a quintessential Led Zeppelin song, despite being less popular than their big hits like “Stairway to Heaven” (1971) or “Kashmir” (1975).
Other ’60s songs featured on Collider‘s ranking include “All Along the Watchtower” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, “In My Life” by The Beatles, and “Waterloo Sunset” by The Kinks, with “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes coming in at the number one spot.
Jimmy Page Has Raved About the Late John Bonham’s Drumming on the 1969 TrackIn a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, guitarist Jimmy Page revealed that “Good Times Bad Times” was a collaborative effort between the band, which consisted of John Paul Jones, John Bonham, who died at the age of 32 in 1980, and Robert Plant.
“‘Good Times Bad Times’ — John Paul Jones came up with the riff. I had the chorus. John Bonham applied the bass-drum pattern. That one really shaped our writing process. It was like, ‘Wow, everybody’s erupting at once,'” said Page to the publication.
Page also complimented Bonham’s drumming in “Good Times Bad Times” while speaking to Rolling Stone. According to Page, Bonham “pushed himself to be able to deliver that bass-drum roll in ‘Good Times Bad Times.'”
“I haven’t met anybody who can play that all the way through, with that swing and approach,” said Page to the publication.
Page made similar comments about Bonham’s drumming abilities on “Good Times Bad Times” during a 2019 interview with UnCut, per Ultimate Classic Rock.
“John changed drumming overnight. Track one of the first album, ‘Good Times Bad Times’, was a revelation. No one could play it. No one,” said Page.
Page also said that he and Bonham “developed this extraordinary intuition” during their time as bandmates.
“We were renowned for being able to stretch songs live, and that came from John following my guitar and just improvising and bending with where I was going,” said the 82-year-old. “‘Dazed and Confused’ is a classic example. He could read my mind and go anywhere and do anything without it falling apart. ‘Communication Breakdown’, ‘Dazed and Confused’, ‘Good Times, Bad Times’, ‘Ramble On’, ‘Immigrant Song’, ‘Kashmir’… These are moments of genius.”
While speaking to UnCut, Page also explained why Led Zeppelin stopped being a band after Bonham died.
“There were probably half a dozen drummers who thought they’d wait a while and then give us a call and take his place, but … he was a one-off,” said Page during the 2019 interview.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was in New York City 25 years ago when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks forever changed the city he called home while playing for the Giants.
On Friday, the anniversary of the attacks, Campbell was asked about his memories of that time and reflected on the tragedy, the devastation, and the remarkable sense of unity that followed.
“It’s something you never forget,” Campbell, who donned a Detroit Fire Department hat for his media availability ahead of Sunday’s season opener, said.
View this post on InstagramFor Campbell, one of the most striking parts of the experience was seeing the extremes of human behavior emerge in the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy.
“You get the worst of humanity, and you get the best all in a matter of minutes, really,” he said.
Campbell said the response from New Yorkers was particularly inspiring. In a city known for its fast pace, he recalled watching people put everything aside to help those around them.
“One of the most inspiring things that you could ever witness be around is in the middle of a tragedy, especially in New York, where people, man, they’re in a hurry, right?” Campbell said. “And it’s about getting to one spot to another, and you got places to go, things to do, and that happens. And man, everybody just pitches in to help.”
That spirit extended well beyond New York, Campbell said, as people from across the country sacrificed time with their families to travel to the city and help with the recovery efforts.
He also acknowledged the courage it took for people to even make their way into New York in the aftermath of the attacks.
Campbell said the tragedy ultimately brought Americans together in a way that is difficult to replicate.
“It definitely pulled our country together,” he said.
Twenty-five years later, Campbell still carries the memories of those who were lost and the people who stepped forward in the aftermath.
“There was a lot of loss, and those are those things you don’t forget,” Campbell said. “And I can’t believe it’s been 25 years.”

1963 Country Song, Covered by Johnny Cash, Went From Small Folk Ballad to No. 1 Hit
Sometimes a great song is hiding in plain sight.
Before Johnny Cash turned “Ring of Fire” into one of the most instantly recognizable country songs ever recorded, it belonged to Anita Carter, the youngest daughter of country music pioneer Maybelle Carter and the younger sister of June Carter. Her recording, called “(Love’s) Ring of Fire,” appeared on her album Folk Songs Old and New.
Written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore, the song was originally given a strikingly different treatment. Anita’s rendition is gentle and folk-inflected, carried by her clear, expressive voice. Mercury Records released it as a single, and Billboard selected it as a “pick hit.” But the record never became the success its admirers hoped it would be.
Johnny Cash heard something else in it.
Cash later said he dreamed of hearing the song accompanied by Mexican-style horns. It was an unusual idea for a country recording at the time, but Cash couldn’t shake it. He reportedly told Anita that if her version didn’t become a hit within several months, he wanted to record the song the way he heard it.
When Anita’s recording failed to take off, he did exactly that.
Cash recorded “Ring of Fire” on March 25, 1963, transforming the restrained folk song with booming mariachi-style trumpets, electric guitar, his unmistakable baritone and backing vocals from Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters. The arrangement was unlike Cash’s basic sound and virtually impossible to forget.
Released on April 19, 1963, “Ring of Fire” became the hit Anita’s version had not. It spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the country chart and crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached No. 17. The record also helped pull Cash out of a career slump and began another major run of hits for the singer.
The meaning behind the song has been disputed, but according to both June Carter and Cash, it sprang from the powerful connection they felt upon meeting and the love that would torment them for years to come.
“Backstage at the Grand Ole Opry, I got on my knees and told her that I was going to marry her someday,” Cash later said. “We were both married to someone else at the time. ‘Ring Of Fire’—June and Merle Kilgore wrote that song for me-that’s the way our love affair was. We fell madly in love and we worked together all the time, toured together all the time, and when the tour was over we both had to go home to other people. It hurt.”
And Carter was no less forthright. While the song’s lyrics could have suggested the fiery beginning of a new romance, for her the image was conjured from a place that felt more like hell, as their love grew and the two were still painfully apart.
“It took such a long time of praying and walking away when I knew from first looking at him that his hurt was as great as mine, and from the depths of my despair, I stepped up to feel the fire, and there is no way to be in that kind of hell, no way to extinguish a flame that burns, burns, burns,” she wrote in 2000. “And so came the idea for the song ‘Ring of Fire’. I was ashamed to tell John that I had always cared, that I couldn’t get him off my mind. Out of the loneliness came one song after another.”
More than six decades later, the song’s stature has only grown. Cash’s “Ring of Fire” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2024, Rolling Stone ranked it No. 25 on its list of the 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time, celebrating the song’s depiction of “unbridled love” and the unmistakable arrangement that transformed Anita Carter’s quiet folk recording into a country classic.
At Montana’s Under the Big Sky festival in 2024, Country Music Hall of Fame member Tanya Tucker performed “Ring of Fire” as one of the country classics she grew up with. Talking about those older country songs that influenced her, she told Rolling Stone, “It’s what you grow up with and what you know.” The song itself has traveled far beyond country music, covered by artists ranging from Eric Burdon and the Animals and Ray Charles to Blondie, Social Distortion and Alan Jackson.
But underneath those famous trumpets is still the song Anita Carter sang first: a small, beautiful folk ballad about love becoming so powerful that there is no escaping the flames.
Johnny Cash simply heard the fire.

1975 Country Song, Written by John Prine, Ranked Among ‘Greatest Country Songs of All Time’
Fifty-one years ago, country icon David Allan Coe released “You Never Even Called Me by My Name,” a song that has gone down as one of the most memorable works in country music history.
In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked its picks of the 200 best country songs, compiling a stacked tally of the genre’s defining tracks. Coe’s 1975 hit “You Never Even Called Me by My Name” secured the No. 160 spot alongside classics like Barbara Mandrell’s 1979 song “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right” at No. 156 and Emmylou Harris’s 1975 track “Boulder to Birmingham” at No. 153.
Released in March 1975 as the third single from his fourth studio album, Once Upon a Rhyme, “You Never Even Called Me by My Name” achieved major commercial success. By July, the song entered the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, climbing until it peaked at No. 8. In total, it spent 17 consecutive weeks on the tally, marking Coe’s mainstream breakthrough.

Julia Stiles Will Honor Dolly Parton With Her 1981 No. 1 Hit in First ‘DWTS’ Performance
Premiere week for season 35 of Dancing with the Stars will take us back in time as the new duos perform together for the first time, dancing to No. 1 songs from the years each celebrity contestant was born.
Actress Julia Stiles feels like her March 1981 birthday really worked out in her favor, because she and her pro partner, Ezra Sosa, will get to dance to Dolly Parton‘s 1981 smash hit, 9 to 5.
On Thursday, September 10, when Stiles appeared on the DWTS podcast hosted by season 34 alum Andy Richter, she said, “So, I was born in 1981, which was a weird year for music, surprisingly. You’d think (otherwise); it was the ’80s but we hadn’t gotten to Madonna or Cyndi Lauper yet.”

Clearly emotional about getting to honor the late entertainment icon, who died on August 25, Stiles continued, “It was the first song that the producers suggested to me, and I was like, ‘Yes! That’s it!’
Oddly enough, Stiles chose the song before Parton’s death, telling Richter, “We had no idea. And now I’m just, like, so honored to dance to her music.”
Calling Parton a “legend,” Stiles said, “She’s such a powerhouse, and any time I feel, like, shaky or have self-doubt, I just think of Dolly. She was just epic. I feel so, so honored.”

Stiles, whose hit movies have included 10 Things I Hate About You and Save the Last Dance, also told Richter on the podcast about her history as a superfan of DWTS, admitting, “I think it scares Ezra … a little about how obsessed with the show I am. He’s like, ‘Just be cool already.'”
“I’ve been watching it forever and I watch reruns,” the mom of three gushed. “I love it so so much. I adore all these performers and I cannot believe that I’m here.”
Stiles turned down invitations to be on the show before, but explained, “It was a combination of me being like too shy and too scared to do it. It was also practical. I have three little boys and then they were even littler. So, it was like, how am I going to make this work for our family? And then, it was so sweet. My husband was like, ‘You just have to do it. We’ll make it work.'”
Dolly Parton Wrote 9 to 5 on the Hit Movie’s Set9 to 5 was the theme song for the 1980 hit movie of the same name, starring Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin. When Fonda asked Parton to join the cast in her first-ever feature film role, the country queen told her she’d do it “only do it if I can write the theme song.”
Parton wrote the tune while filming the movie, telling late night host Jimmy Fallon in 2019, “I used my acrylic nails on the set when I was writing it. I did, because they make noise, and it sounded like a typewriter to me.”
The single Parton recorded was released a month before the movie, in 1980, and it reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart a year later, in 1981.
The song has had incredible staying power. In 2017, the song went platinum, and after Parton’s death, it soared back onto Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart, along with many of her other hits. For the week of September 5, it was still hanging on as Parton’s top hit on the charts, at No. 8.
Stiles and Sosa will perform their 9 to 5 dance during DWTS premiere week, with two primetime shows on Tuesday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 16, both starting at 8 p.m. ET.
