Petra Nemcova, Who Survived a Tsunami by Clinging to a Tree for 8 Hours, Is More Gorgeous Than Ever

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:49pm

Petra Nemcova may be known as a supermodel and survivor, but she's looking better than ever in 2026.

The Czech beauty, 46, rose to stardom as a supermodel who hit the runways and pages of magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Elle. However, her name became synonymous with the horrific 2004 tsunami in Thailand when she miraculously survived after clinging to a palm tree for eight hours with serious injuries. 22 years later, Nemcova is back in the spotlight, and looking incredible. The beauty attended the Philantropica Boat Party during the 79th Cannes Film Festival aboard the Alfa Nero on May 19, and showed that a simple cocktail dress can be elegant and classy.

What Happened to Nemcova During the 2004 Tsunami?

In 2004, Nemcova and her boyfriend, fashion photographer Simon Atlee, were on vacation in Thailand when the tsunami ripped through their bungalow.

"I went into this stillness, into almost like a meditative state, because I knew if I start panicking, you lose more energy," Nemcova told ABC at the time. "And I needed all my energy to keep alive."

Nemcova clung to a palm tree for eight hours while Atlee was swept away. She had suffered a shattered pelvis and internal injuries.

“I couldn't go and swim to them or try to help them because I couldn't move my legs,” she told Diane Sawyer in their original 2005 interview.

Looking Back on the Tragedy, 20 Years Later

Nemcova was rescued by strangers who gave her clothing and put her on a floating mattress.

"Those people were ready to risk their lives for strangers," Nemcova shared with ABC. "And that shows you the best of humanity."

Looking to help others like she was once helped, Nemcova now runs All Hands and Hearts, an organization that supports people devastated by natural disasters.

"The two, three months after natural disasters, that's usually the time when ... different organizations leave," Nemcova told ABC in an update for the 20th anniversary of the tsunami. "And if there is no more support from organizations, you are like, 'How [am] I ever gonna rebuild my life?'"

Now a married mother, Nemcova is continuing the fight to help others affected by tragedy.

19-Year-Old Novel That Became One of Netflix’s Most Controversial Shows Is Ranked Among ‘Best Teen Books About Real Problems'

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:49pm

Almost two decades ago, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher hit our shelves, and it immediately became a book to pay attention to.

Since then, it's become one of the most controversial TV shows of all time, after Netflix adapted the one-book story into a four-season series. Yet, the teen drama novel is ranked in the No. 2 spot for "Best Teen Books About Real Problems" on Goodreads by users.

Originally published in 2007, Thirteen Reasons Why tells Hannah Baker's story through the eyes — or more like ears — of Clay Jensen. When he receives a strange package with his name on it on his porch, he discovers several cassette tapes Hannah had recorded before taking her own life. Clay is to listen to them all in order, and it tells everyone the 13 reasons she did what she did, leading to him discovering secrets and details that will change his life forever.

In a 2008 interview, Asher explained why he decided to opt for the use of cassette tapes, and it all stemmed from a museum tour.

He explained, "I took an audio tour at a museum several years ago, and I felt that would make for a fascinating way to format a novel: someone’s recorded voice leading another person on a journey through their town."

While that was the inspiration for the way the story was told, but very real issues that come up in the novel are partially personal. Asher went on to share his story was "because a close relative of mine attempted suicide when she was Hannah’s age."

The novel is dark in the way that it tells Hannah's story. It goes into real high school issues, such as sexual assault, the treatment of girls compared to boys, and simply trying to fit in. There's also the topic of suicide, which is a real concern among high school students, especially due to bullying.

At one point, Hannah was going to survive, but Asher told Penguin Random House that somewhere along the way, he knew that it had to change. He acknowledged, "Whatever the reasoning, it felt false for this particular story and for the seriousness of the issue. If someone goes through with a suicide, there are no second chances for anyone involved."

He felt like the original ending would have allowed readers to not fully take in the overall message, as there were no real consequences. By having the ending be a real and jaunting experience, everyone has to sit back and look at the actions of each and every person — whether they directly teased and bullied or not.

Thirteen Reasons Why would go on to become a Netflix TV series, and it received mixed reviews. The first season remained relatively faithful to the original story, but Asher never continued with the world to show how the students would react afterward. Netflix opted to continue the story rather than stick to a limited series.

Is Donald Trump Jr. Getting Married Over Memorial Day Weekend?

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:40pm

Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson got engaged, had a shower, and presumably, will get married. While the couple hasn’t announced a wedding date yet, some media outlets recently revealed that it could be as soon as Memorial Day weekend.

Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson’s Relationship Timeline

This isn’t Trump Jr.’s first marriage.Donald Trump’s son and now-ex-wife Vanessa Trump divorced in 2018. The pair share five children: Kai Trump (born in 2007), Donald John Trump III (born in 2009), Tristan Trump (born in 2011), Spencer Trump (born in 2012), and Chloe Trump (born in 2014).

Following their divorce, Don Jr. dated and was later engaged to former Fox News host and political advisor Kimberly Guilfoyle. Their relationship ended in 2024, the same year he went public with Bettina Anderson. Meanwhile, his ex, Vanessa, began a romance with pro golfer Tiger Woods

Reportedly, the President’s son popped the question to the Palm Beach socialite at a Camp David retreat while the pair celebrated her 39th birthday. And of course, Anderson said yes. In December 2025, the Commander-In-Chief announced the engagement at the White House. Trump Jr. spoke to the media, saying, “I’d like to thank Bettina for that one word ‘yes.’...You’re trying to ask, and you’re not sure what the answer is going to be, it’s a little bit rough. But she said yes. So, that’s a big win for the end of the year.” Anderson also spoke at the event, gushing, “I get to marry the love of my life. And I feel just like the luckiest girl in the world.”

The following April, Anderson posted pics (on Instagram) of a lavish Palm Beach bridal shower at Mar-a-Lago. The bride-to-be captioned the carousel of stellar snapshots, “Still soaking in how beautiful and special Sunday was. To be surrounded by so many special women I love and admire, and feel so grateful to have in my corner, meant more than I can say.”

View this post on Instagram

Anderson’s future sister-in-law, Ivanka Trump, also posted photos of the event, writing, “Celebrated love, family, and new beginnings at @bettina_anderson bridal shower this weekend.” Along with Ivanka, the President’s other daughter, Tiffany Trump, and daughter-in-law Lara Trump were also in attendance.

Given that a bridal shower typically happens close to a wedding, it’s possible the pair’s nuptials are near. After all, the opulent event did take place more than a month ago.

When Will Donald Trump, Jr. and Bettina Anderson Marry?

It’s the question of the century. Okay, so maybe not of the century. But the public wants to know when the president’s son and his glam girlfriend will make it official. According toPage Six, the wedding could happen on Memorial Day weekend. The media outlet recently published an article, revealing that a source close to the couple believes Trump and Anderson will wed on a private Bahamian island in front of family and close friends.

As of now, the couple has not confirmed the Bahamas wedding rumor. So, without a clear answer, it’s anyone’s guess as to when and where they will tie the knot!

In January, Ashley Tisdale Frenchmade waves by writing about her experience with a "toxic mom" group. She didn't name anyone, but people noticed the famous moms she hung out with before the article.

Mandy Moorewas one of those moms in the group photo. It's May and Moore, 42, gave her reaction to the situation.

The This Is Us star talked about the situation with Andy Cohen on his radio show. "It's wild to have anybody talk about your life," Moore said. "And I know Hilary [Duff]has sort of mentioned this too. It's like we both have grown up in this business and had people dissect who we are and the choices we make, and all of that."

French is also a child star. "This was something altogether and decidedly way more upsetting," the actor continued. "Because it just like cuts to the core of [what] I think the most important thing in my life is being a kind person and that legacy of kindness." She said herself and people in her life being portrayed otherwise was "very upsetting" to her.

Moore said she doesn't like conflict, but preferred to have that discussion face-to-face. She also said French's essay fell into the trope that women can't get along.

The #1 Pilates Workout Sequence That Builds Strength Beyond the Mat

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:25pm

There are many ways to build core strength without lifting heavy weights at the gym. Pilates may not be the first modality that comes to mind, but it’s actually quite effective for developing real-world, everyday strength, mobility and flexibility. Another reason so many individuals are obsessed with Pilates? It’s typically low-impact and easy on the joints, making it a stellar workout option as you age.

One of the main differences between Pilates and traditional weight training is this: Pilates focuses on muscular stability, endurance, control, mindful breathing and postural alignment, whereas weightlifting usually centers on progressive overload and muscle growth.

If you’re curious what “strength beyond the mat” is all about, it means building a body that supports successful daily movement. According to Lily Collins-Sak, a Pilates instructor and the founder of The Daily Pilates, a brand born from her deep background in Kinesiology and Exercise Science, it’s the ability to carry grocery bags without experiencing back pain, pick up your child or grandchildren while maintaining a stable core, sit with solid posture and age in a more graceful way.

“Beyond how we move, it’s also how we breathe, handle stress and show up in life; it’s really the ultimate wellness win,” she tells Parade. “One of my favorite ways to build ‘real-world strength’ through Pilates is focusing on controlled, full-body movement patterns that mirror how we move through life—pushing, pulling, rotating, carrying, balancing and stabilizing. Pilates teaches the body to work together as one connected system for all of these patterns.”

Below, Collins-Sak shares a sequence she favors because it improves posture, stability, coordination and deep core strength in a manner that translates to daily life.

The Best Pilates Workout for Functional Strength, According to an Instructor

This sequence of five moves helps build strength beyond the mat.

1. Tabletop breathwork

“This teaches the body to stabilize and the mechanics of proper breath work,” Collins-Sak tells Parade.

  1. Begin lying supine with your legs lifted to 45 degrees, forming a tabletop position.
  2. Bring one hand between your pubic bone and navel, and place the other over the center of your ribcage.
  3. Take a deep breath in, expanding your ribcage out to the sides while preserving pubic bone and hip bone alignment.
  4. As you exhale, continue to hug your lower abs up and inward and wrap your ribs down and in like a corset.
  5. Repeat for three to five breaths.

2. Bicycle Crunches

“Real life happens in rotation. Reaching, twisting, lifting and changing direction all require rotational strength and control,” Collins-Sak says.

  1. Assume a tabletop position.
  2. Lift your head, neck and shoulders with your hands supporting the back of your head.
  3. Throughout the exercise, focus on maintaining a neutral pelvis and picture holding an apple between your collarbone and chin.
  4. Stabilize your pelvis by hugging inward with your lower abs.
  5. Exhale as you rotate through your ribs, bringing your right elbow to meet your left knee.
  6. Gradually return to the center.
  7. Repeat on the other side, completing 15 reps on each.

3. Side-lying glute series

Building strong lateral glutes improves walking mechanics, pelvic stability, hip support and overall balance.

  1. Begin lying on your side.
  2. Bend your bottom leg to 45 degrees and lengthen your top leg to line up with the back of the mat.
  3. Lift through your bottom ribs and expand through your chest.
  4. As you activate your core to stabilize, lift your top leg to hip level and start to swing the leg toward the front of the mat with a pointed toe.
  5. With the next breath, flex through your heel and squeeze your glute to guide that leg back to the start position.
  6. Repeat on the other side, completing 10 to 12 reps on each.

4. Bird dog to diagonal reach

“People tend to be overly chest-dominant from phones, desks and driving. Strengthening the posterior chain improves posture and reduces neck and shoulder tension,” Collins-Sak tells Parade

Building strength in this part of the body trains it to stabilize while you move a limb at a time. A good example is climbing stairs or walking.

  1. Begin on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and knees below your hips.
  2. Reach your opposite arm and leg out as you move slightly out onto a diagonal, keeping your ribs connected and hips stable, resisting the urge to shift from side to side.
  3. On the next breath, return to the start position with control, focusing on elongating the spine.
  4. Perform 10 to 12 reps on each side.

Related: We Asked 3 Personal Trainers the #1 Move To Get ‘Pilates Arms’ and They All Said the Same Thing

5. Forearm plank hip dips

This movement blends strength and mobility while training the body to produce power from the core rather than using the lower back. As you perform this exercise, pretend you’re holding an apple between your chin and collarbone; this can help support neck and head alignment as well.

  1. Start in a forearm plank with your head and neck aligned with your spine and feet parallel.
  2. Keep your core braced and shoulders stable as you slowly rotate your hips to one side, lightly dipping them toward the ground while keeping the spine elongated.
  3. Use your obliques to lift back up through your center and rotate to the other side with control.
  4. Perform 15 to 20 reps.
What Makes This Workout More Effective Than a Standard Pilates Flow?

This Pilates sequence was designed with the intention of building from one exercise to the next, with every movement prepping your body for the following one.

“Beginning with breathwork helps create a deeper core connection, making it easier to engage through movements like bicycle crunches,” Collins-Sak explains. “Once the obliques are activated, maintaining rib and leg positioning in side-lying work becomes more supported and controlled. Activating the hips and glutes then helps stabilize the pelvis and better connect the posterior chain for movements like the bird dog. The plank serves as the finale, bringing all of these elements together.”

Moving through this purposeful progression helps boost strength, mobility, balance and coordination by enabling your body to establish control and connection.

While gym workouts certainly have their place, Pilates brings strength training to an entirely different level. Each movement prioritizes exactly what your body needs to move functionally. Add this sequence to your regular rotation to build strength beyond the mat!

Warren Buffett Breaks His Own Investing 'Rule' With Major $2.65B Move In Rising Stock

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:23pm

In 2020, Berkshire Chairman of the Board Warren Buffett dumped over $4 billion in airline stock, an industry he long thought was a “value trap,” at a loss. Today, however, Berkshire’s new CEO, Greg Abel, has reinvested in one airline in particular.

A Surprising Investment

The Street recently reported that in Berkshire’s 13f filing, the investment giant acquired 39,809,456 shares of Delta Air Lines (DAL) valued at approximately $2.65 billion. It’s one of the largest new positions announced in years for the company, but the investment doesn’t seem as risky as you may think.

Yes, six years ago, Buffett dumped the stock, along with that of other airlines, but Delta’s recent reports show why Abel may have reconsidered this particular industry. There are three key factors in the stock acquisition.

  1. Delta’s revenue mix has changed course. The premium cabin seating revenue rose by 14% while loyalty and other related revenue grew 10%, according to a March 2026 report. These revenue streams are less sensitive to the fuel crisis pricing plaguing other industries.
  2. Delta’s balance sheet is stable. The company’s debt has fallen by $760 million since the end of 2025, and its liquidity exceeds $8 billion. The numbers the company is reporting are looking more stable, attracting the eye of serious investors.
  3. Delta’s secret revenue growth is in its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) unit. According to Yahoo! Finance, this branch of Delta’s business reported $846 million in revenue in 2022, a figure that has grown since then.

When you understand these three pillars of Delta’s business, the reinvestment into this particular airline doesn’t look so risky or surprising.

Related: Delta Is Changing Its In-Flight Service—and It Might Actually Be a Relief

What Changed

In 2020, when Buffet dumped the stocks, Delta didn’t have the framework it does now. While other airlines are assuring customers that the fuel crisis won’t affect summer travel but may change prices, and some airlines are shuttering altogether, Delta is seeing revenue growth.

“It turns out I was wrong,” notes Buffet in a paper published by Yale School of Management. But the long-term investor is allowed to be, considering the unexpected outcome of Delta outperforming in the current economy.

The main growth sector for actual ticket sales is in corporate travel demand. Even in our current environment, Delta’s survey results showed that 85% of corporate travelers are expecting to increase their budgets this year. Given the vertical has grown by double digits year over year and the airline's continued revenue growth, it looks like Abel’s investment strategy is a wise one.

'CIA' Stars Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss React to Shocking Season 1 Finale Twist — And Tease What's Next (Exclusive)

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:19pm

CBS's new series CIA just wrapped up its first season with a major bombshell. After CIA agent Colin Glass (Tom Ellis) spent months reeling from the death of his partner and girlfriend, Toni (Angela Sarafyan), he found out that she was still alive. She had gone off the grid while working as a double agent with Pyramid, the security firm that planted the mole in the CIA.

When Colin finally ran into her again, she was shooting up a train station with little regard for her ex. She was on a "revenge tour" against Pyramid, and that mission was supposed to end with her killing the CEO. Bill (Nick Gehlfuss) and Colin managed to stop her, and she was taken in for FBI questioning. Before she and Colin had a chance for a heart-to-heart and less violent reunion, Bill revealed that instead of being sent to prison, Toni was being sent back out into the field.

🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

After the success of their mole search, Bill was offered a huge promotion and a move, but he turned it down. He didn't want to "miss all the fun,"  as he joked to Colin. This unlikely partnership isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and that's a great thing because Colin is now going to need Bill's support more than ever as he heads into Season 2 with his world turned upside down.

Ellis and Gehlfuss chatted with Parade all about their partnership, both on and off the screen, and what fans can expect when the show returns.

Related: ‘CIA’ Stars Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss Tease Explosive Bromance and a Game-Changing Secret in New Series (Exclusive)

How much does this Toni situation change the dynamic between Colin and Bill? It feels like it has thrown Colin off quite a bit.
Tom Ellis: Well, I think at the start of the season, Colin had zero interest in a partner like Bill at all. He didn't think he could learn anything, didn't think he could get anything from him. He just literally wanted to use him for his badge. Certainly in the CIA, you can't trust anybody, you're not allowed to. And when you do, you can count on your fingers how many people you have in your inner circle. By the end of the season, I would suggest that Bill is probably the only person he truly trusts now, and I think he has become this figure in his life that he can rely on, and that he can be vulnerable with, and he can open his heart to. So if you'd asked me when the season started, if that's where we'd be at the end of the season, I would have said absolutely no chance. It's a changing of the guard in terms of who Colin really trusts.

Bill came into this with a totally different perspective.
Nick Gehlfuss: Totally. He set out to have a career-making opportunity, and he wasn't interested in developing a partnership either. He thought he was being sold snake oil by Jubal, like, "What do you have me doing here?" And lo and behold, here we are. He gets the promotion that he wants, and he turns it down, because I think subconsciously, Bill might have been running from the gray in life. I think he likes things very organized. He's much more comfortable with black and white, to a certain degree.

He knows the world doesn't operate that way, but I think ultimately, he found out he was really good at all this. He doesn't love the lying that comes with it. It goes against his core, but I think he's figuring out where he can balance his moral compass with this. I think that will continue to be challenged, and I look forward to that from a character standpoint, but he understands that the main objective at the end of the day is keeping the country safe.

What has changed him the most?
Gehlfuss: He's leveled up here in a way that he had not in the past. He's been given access to this secret door that is the CIA, and I think he underestimated how gratifying it would be. He trusts Colin. I don't think he's worried for his life anymore. He thought this guy might get him killed, but in fact, he saved his life on multiple occasions and vice versa. They've been in the trenches together. I think anytime you've gone through certain things, it's an unshakable bond, and it's really hard to go away from that, even though he had his sights set on a more midwestern existence.

What's next for them now that their initial mission is completed?
Ellis: Well in terms of the mole storyline, they uncovered the mole, but I think there are bigger things at play behind that. I don't know necessarily whether that investigation has come to its end or whether it's just come to the end of the first part of the investigation. But for me as an actor, what I'm looking forward to in Season 2 is that we started Season 1 with Colin as very confident, centered, knew exactly who he was kind of character, and we start Season 2 where he's not that person at all. He's in a bit of an existential crisis about whether he's in the right place in his life.

Does that put Bill in a weird place where now he's guiding and helping Colin?
Gehlfuss: I think we saw that in the finale, and I think that will likely carry over. I'm interested to see where that goes, but I also think Bill's got to figure out a bunch of stuff himself. He's made a decision now, so how does that affect his engagement? Do they have a conversation about what he's setting out to do here in an honest way, and she says she's along for the ride? Also, I think while Bill knows that Toni is a great asset as opposed to rotting in jail, he's not naive to the fact that it's going to present some challenges and conflict, and it'll be triggering for Colin. But I think the show comes alive when we do our undercover operations. I'm really interested in seeing these guys go undercover in a way where we might not recognize them.

Related: Fall 2026 TV: The Ultimate Return Guide for Every Cop, Medical and Legal Drama

These guys have such a classic odd couple dynamic. So did you take any inspiration from other famous duos?
Ellis: When we were just trying to find what the tone of the show was, one of the guiding lights for us was Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon. We did want there to be an element of fun; we wanted some levity in the show, but we didn't want to force the issue. I feel like whenever I've spoken to people who work in law enforcement or the military, they have to deal with the darkest aspects of life, and their way of communicating with each other is often with a sense of gallows humor. They're dealing with such dark stuff they have to find a way to protect themselves from it, and that's their coping mechanism.

But we didn't want the action stuff to be silly, so it was finding that alchemy of where this relationship was going to live. We had ideas about it, but the more we did it, it just sort of settled into this natural dynamic between myself and Nick, and I think that's to do with the casting. It's intrinsically in us as people that we are diametrically opposed in many areas. But I think the less we try to force the odd couple thing, the better it became.

Gehlfuss: I do think what I kept thinking about was Butch Cassidy and Sundance in the sense that these two are totally capable in their own rights, and they have their own skills, and they come together, and it balances them out in a great yin and yang. And here we are at the end of the season, and some of that has drifted, and now…there's some blending. The Venn diagram is shifting, and it's awesome.

And what did that do for you as actors? Do you feel like partners?
Ellis: I think as actors we definitely trusted each other.

Gehlfuss: Yeah, for sure. We met in the audition, and it was love at first audition. I felt extremely grateful and so happy when I received the job, and we didn't know how it was going to be working with one another, and we just showed up and did what we do as actors. We helped make a TV show together, and that is no easy feat. It's not as important as saving the country or keeping people safe in America, but it is a feat that bonds you in the same way that these two have been bonded on screen.

Was there any spy stuff you particularly loved doing this season?
Ellis: Honestly, one of the things I love doing on this show was going out and shooting in New York in various iconic locations, doing stakeouts in Bryant Park or down underneath Brooklyn Bridge. You're doing this thing with your sunglasses on and you're talking to someone over there on an earpiece, and it was f—king cool. This is cool. New York doesn't stop for anybody, and certainly not for filming. You really have to navigate your way through the public to make certain things happen. I actually found that really exciting.

Gehlfuss: There's an aliveness that happens throughout that process. It's really fun to figure out how to be in public but do private things, but make it look like you're not doing the thing that you're doing. It's fun to cover it up as an actor. It's juicy material to play with. I look forward to pushing that a little further and going deeper with that in Season 2.

Have you ever been mistaken for real law enforcement?
Gehlfuss: No one's come up to us yet.

Ellis: I have people come up to me when the cameras are rolling, asking for selfies and telling me how much they love Tell Me Lies and stuff.

Gehlfuss: There was a moment where I was running with a gun by a work van of guys eating their lunch. I'm running back to get to my position to start the scene again, but I needed to tell them, because they looked worried, that it's a fake gun, and we're filming a TV show. It's the first time I've ever used a gun on screen, by the way. I'm running around New York City with so many people that don't know what we're doing, and I have "FBI" emblazoned on the back of my jacket, and I'm like, "No, no, we're filming." It's hilarious.

Dave Ramsey Slams This Popular Retirement Move and Warns It Can Be a Major Pitfall for Retirees

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:12pm

They say that the most valuable thing you can purchase in this economy is land, since they aren't making any more of it. However, the second most valuable thing may be the house on that land, since housing prices seem to keep climbing each month.

Noted financial guru Dave Ramsey has some surprising advice for retirees who are hoping to make some extra cash with one of these investments, and it may ring true for everyday investors as well. Keep reading to learn more about what Ramsey told one caller who recently called into his show, and why he says this stressful investment is best left alone.

Dave Ramsey Says Real Estate Investing Isn't a Wise Choice for Retirees

A man named Lee from Omaha called into The Ramsey Show recently, asking for advice after he said he was getting mixed messages from his wife and friends. According to the 68-year-old, his friends had recently started pressuring him to invest in real estate after he used some of his IRA funds to pay off his mortgage, telling him that diversifying his investments could be a smart money move.

However, Lee says his wife isn't on board, which is why he was turning to the financial guru for help. Ramsey was quick with a brief piece of advice that really summed up his feelings on the matter: "Listen to your wife," he said in response to the question.

Why Are Real Estate Investments Risky in Retirement

"Listen to your wife" is typically great advice, but there's more than just a relationship dynamic at play here. That's because Kiplinger lists several reasons to avoid real estate investing in retirement.

First, you cannot count on monthly rental payments to subsidize your income. It may seem like you'll be getting a hefty check from your tenant(s) every month; however, things like vacancies, lack of payment, repair costs, and even insurance increases can all take a huge chunk out of that money.

Next is your tax implications. Real estate taxes continue to climb, which means you'll still be making monthly payments on the property, even if you own it free and clear. Not only that, but then there's Uncle Sam to consider. That income can push you into a higher tax bracket, increasing your bill. It can also add to the amount of money that you are taxed when it comes to Social Security, and increase your Medicare Part D and Part B premiums as well.

Lastly, you have to worry about the ongoing maintenance costs of the property. I'm not just talking about repairs and upkeep, either. Legal fees, advertising, and having someone to actually walk the property or answer the phone when there's a problem can all add up as well.

While I get the allure of building a decent-sized real estate portfolio in retirement, owning an investment property could potentially lead to more headaches during a time when you're supposed to be living a quieter and more relaxed life, adding to the many reasons why Ramsey likely suggested Lee pass on this idea from his friends.

Paul Simon, 84, Reveals Song of His That Will 'Last 100 Years'

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:11pm

Paul Simon shares in an elite company of singer songwriters. I've always held him in the same breath as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. All three emerged out of the '60s by fording a unique voice, and showing what the song can truly be capable of as a medium.

Regrettably, Simon is the one I am the least familiar with out of these musicians. I have, of course, listened to his work with Art Garfunkel, and I have appreciated it for years. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Wednesday morning, 3AM" are some of the best pieces of singer songwriter music to emerge out of that decade. Simon is a key figure within the songwriting story, and a necessary study for anyone hoping to understand the way music has evolved.

All the way to today, Simon has continued his career, releasing his album "Seven Psalms" in 2023, and touring ever since. As he reaches the later years of his career, Simon has been reflecting on what he has left behind. In an upcoming interview with Anthony Mason on his show "Alchemy with Anthony," Simon reflected on one of his most accomplished songs, "The Sound of Silence."

View this post on Instagram

The teaser post showcases the story of how the legendary song came to be. As the story goes, Simon wrote the song at age 22 in a bathroom after being inspired by the echo inside, What came out of it is one of the defining folk songs of the '60s.

Simon went on to say that out of any of his songs, "The Sound Of Silence" has the best chance of lasting "100 years."

Fans took to the comments to react to this statement, sharing in agreement and even bringing up more of Simon's timeless work.

"I’m 73 this August, so that was a long time ago. Paul’s music holds up remarkably well. I don’t think he has to worry about his music being around for 100 years. It’s timeless."

"I think there's a number of his songs that will last a hundred years."

"I love the song the flower never bends with the rainfall.. also from that same album. Amazing songwriter. I love Paul Simon!"

I think I can agree that Simon's songs are safe from being forgotten. He is a timeless, beautiful writer that changed music forever with his words.

These 'Summer House' Stars Are Joining the New Spinoff 'In the City'

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:05pm

In the City, Bravo’s spinoff ofSummer House, swaps Hamptons weekends for the Manhattan grind — without losing any of the drama that made the original series so addictive.

The show follows returning stars Lindsay Hubbard, Kyle Cooke and Amanda Batula alongside a larger cast of NYC-based friends as they juggle career moves, relationship troubles and major life changes (looking at you, Amanda and Kyle).

Keep reading for a breakdown of the In the City cast heading into Season 1 on May 19, 2026.

In the City Full CastAmanda Batula

Expect In the City to document the end of Amanda Batula and Kyle Cooke’s marriage. The couple, whose relationship played out across all 10 seasons of Summer House, announced their split in January 2026. Just three months later, Amanda revealed she was dating fellow cast member West Wilson — the ex-boyfriend of her close friend and castmate Ciara Miller.

Although the first season of In the City was already shot by the time Amanda and West’s relationship came to light,  Bravo chairman Frances Berwicktold The Ankler that producers went back and shot additional scenes so the premiere could address the “Scamanda” controversy head-on.

Kyle Cooke

As his marriage to Amanda unravels — and his ready-to-drink beverage company Loverboy continues to struggle — Kyle works to expand his career as a DJ.

Lindsay Hubbard

Lindsay returns as a newly single mom trying to redefine herself outside of the Hamptons party scene — and inside the dating world.

Danielle Olivera & Eoin Heavey

The entrepreneur’s whirlwind romance with boyfriendEoin Heavey, founder of hospitality app Maitre, becomes a central storyline of In the City, with some of Danielle’s friends wondering if the couple isn’t moving too fast. Now about a year into their relationship, the couple recently revealed they’re expecting their first child together

Andrea Denver & Lexi Sundin

Andrea and Lexi are a year into their marriage and settled-down in NYC — for now. In reality, they’re grappling with whether or not to move to Andrea’s native Italy, and starting to wonder whether they truly share the same vision for their future.

Nick Barber & Yvonne Najor

Now engaged after nearly a decade as a couple, furniture entrepreneur Nick and former VP of marketing Yvonne are feeling pressure to have kids — and it’s not an easy decision. “Yvonne leans on her bestie Lindsay for support, and Nick considers the time commitment of his career as they decide if they’re truly ready to start a family,” their Bravo bio reads.

Whitney Fransway & Kenny Martin

Reality TV fans may recognize Whitney from The Bachelor Season 21. She joins In the City with boyfriend Kenny, whom she left Los Angeles to be with after only a year of dating, and who is dealing with the recent death of his mother.

Gavin Moseley

Bravo describes Gavin as a nightlife entrepreneur who’s trying to avoid commitment — which, naturally, means commitment drama is probably coming his way.

Katie Arundel

Katie serves as one of Amanda’s closest confidantes, but she's also tight with Danielle, with whom Amanda has a strained relationship.

Georgina Ferzil

Georgina — a dermatologist and single mom — is working to launch her own skincare line after a difficult split.

Will West Wilson be on In the City?

Yes, but he's not a full-time cast member. He's expected to appear in special pickup footage, which producers ordered so the premiere could address the Scamanda controversy head-on. So far, he's already appeared in the trailer.

Will Ciara Miller be on In the City?

Miller has hinted at an In the City cameo, but she's not an official cast member of the spinoff. At this point, it's unclear whether she'll even return for Summer House Season 11. Although TMZ claimed she'd be back for more, Ciara herself shot down the report, saying, "TMZ doesn't know sh-t about me." With her upcoming stint on Dancing With the Stars Season 35, the woman is busy.

The U.S. Department of State Just Issued a Travel Advisory and the Public Is Concerned

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:03pm

The U.S. Department of State has issued a new travel advisory following an Ebola outbreak in Africa.

"The Department of State strongly urges Americans not to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, or Uganda for any reason and to reconsider travel to Rwanda due to the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus disease outbreak in the region," read the advisory, posted on social media on Tuesday, May 19. "The Department’s Travel Advisories for DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda are now Level 4 – Do Not Travel, and the Travel Advisory for Rwanda is Level 3 – Reconsider Travel."

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency after more than 130 deaths thought to be linked to the outbreak. Ebola is severe and often fatal, with symptoms progressing rapidly after onset.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Ebola can be spread person to person and can be transmitted if a person's "broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth come in contact with: Blood or body fluids from a person who is sick or has died from Ebola disease. Body fluids include urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk, and amniotic fluid." The infectious disease can also be transmitted if someone comes in contact with things like "clothes, bedding, needles, and medical equipment" and also via semen.

After reading the new travel advisory, many people wondered what was being done about people living in the "Level 4 — Do Not Travel" countries who might want to visit the U.S. Despite the concern, it seems there's action being taken.

The CDC said that people without U.S. passports who have traveled to any of the aforementioned countries within the past 21 days will face new restrictions when entering the United States.

Alysa Liu Sparks Relationship Rumors With Fellow U.S. Figure Skater After Viral Video

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:01pm

Alysa Liu and fellow Team USA skater Amber Glenn just sent the internet into detective mode after a viral TikTok had fans convinced there was something romantic going on between them.

The video, shared by Glenn on Friday, May 15, during the ongoing Stars on Ice tour, showed the pair skating hand-in-hand while laughing and spinning together on the ice.

Fans seemingly speculated about their relationship status, as Glenn was prompted to make a comment addressing shutting down any rumors. “GUYS, ALYSA IS LIKE A LITTLE SISTER TO ME! I’VE KNOWN HER SINCE SHE WAS 10 AND I WAS 16,” Glenn wrote.

She later doubled down by replying to herself with an old selfie of the two from years earlier, making it clear their connection goes beyond the recent Olympic spotlight. Fans loved to see little Liu pic, though.

“SHE WAS SO BABY,” one user wrote.

“This is so precious,” said another.

A third exclaimed, “STOP THATS THE CUTEST THING EVER.”

The viral moment comes as both skaters continue experiencing a major rise in fame following the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. Glenn, 26, who openly identifies as queer, has amassed millions of followers across TikTok and Instagram, while Liu’s Olympic gold medal win launched her into an entirely new level of celebrity.

Since February, Liu, 20, has made magazine appearances, met Taylor Swift, walked the red carpet at the Met Gala, and become arguably one of the most recognizable faces in modern figure skating.

Her Met Gala debut earlier this year especially caught fans’ attention. The 20-year-old arrived wearing a dramatic deep red Louis Vuitton gown complete with matching heels and a glamorous new hairstyle that temporarily made her signature striped hair appear much shorter. The appearance came a few hours after she announced she was the luxury brand’s new ambassador.

As for her love life, Liu seemed to previously hint that romance is not currently a priority. In a January 2026 interview with Cosmopolitan, the Olympic champion shared that she sees herself being “single for a long time” and chooses “friendships over relationships any day.”

'Survivor 50' Stars Name the Greatest Player of All Time (Exclusive)

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 1:00pm

Across 50 seasons, 751 people from across America (and occasionally Canada) have thrown themselves into the adventure of a lifetime. They've immersed themselves in the African savannah, the Brazilian rainforest, and, most prominently, on remote islands in the South Pacific. They've pushed themselves to the brink of starvation and exhaustion, living through the most high-stakes, paranoid phase they'll probably ever live through. And they'll do it all on camera for millions of people to see, all in pursuit of the coveted title of Sole Survivor.

The tapestry of Survivor has been woven over the course of a quarter of a century with people who span all kinds of age, race, occupation and background. And, given the wealth of iconic characters and strategists we've seen over the years, you would be hard-pressed to name who the greatest one of them all is. And that's exactly what we did with the cast of Survivor 50.

🔥Don’t miss our weekly Survivor newsletter! Sign up to get Mike Bloom’s exclusive interviews with the players and the latest news about the show right to your inbox.🔥

24 of those 751 players returned to our screens over the past three months, participating in the historic landmark season. From the opening minutes, Season 50 was seen as a joyful opining, a celebration of its voluminous past through the castaways representing it in the present. So, before this Wednesday's epic three-hour finale and reunion, we asked the cast to look back and name who they think the Survivor "GOAT" is. Of course, there are some chalk picks, those often labeled as the "Mount Rushmore" of the show. But there was plenty of room for interpretation — and even a mention of one person currently on the season.

While unfortunately, we were not able to get answers from Chrissy HofbeckCoach WadeMike White, or Ozzy Lusth, here is the rest of the Survivor 50 cast revealing who they think is the greatest player of all time.

Who is the greatest Survivor player of all time?

Angelina Keeley: My GOAT of the GOATs is Parvati. You cannot beat that. She's also a friend, so it's personal too. But my Mount Rushmore is Parvati, Sandra, Tony, and — this one's gonna get you — Adam Klein. He is a good friend of mine, and he's the reason I was on the show. So I always gotta give him his flowers when I can, because he's just a doll, and I love him. I would literally not be here had they not found me on his Facebook friends list and asked me to be a Goliath on David vs. Goliath.

Aubry Bracco: Cirie Fields. I love her. I just love her. It was incredible to meet Cirie in [Season] 34. I'm like, "Everything I saw on TV is even better in person." They often say don't meet your heroes, but I'm kind of glad I did.

Charlie Davis: I think Parvati is the greatest of all time. Parvati or Sandra. Oh my goodness, Sandra's gonna kill me for saying Parvati first. I just saw her this weekend. She's probably around here somewhere. Both two-time winners. And I also just think Parvati played an amazing game in Heroes vs. Villains. But then you have Sandra, she's a two-time winner. So it's got to be between those two.

Christian Hubicki: Tony Vlachos. If I ever played with Tony, I would lose just out of sheer fascination of being in his presence. I'll be like, "I just need to watch you move. You just voted me out. I'm so impressed! I'm not even mad." I think that he's just got this way about him, this odd charisma, this high energy. And yet the brilliance. I would want to study it, but I'd probably lose to it. Such is life.

Cirie Fields: The best Survivor player of all time, in my humble opinion, is Parvati. I will vote for Parvati time and time again, because I know her. I ride with her, I play side by side with her. She is real, as real as could be, and I love her. She's my Survivor soulmate.

Related: Cirie Fields Reveals Why She Knew She Could Never Reach the End of ‘Survivor 50’ (Exclusive)

Colby Donaldson: Everybody talks about the Mount Rushmore. And there is no question, you've got to put Rob and Parvati and Tony and Sandra up there. Sandra and Tony have won it twice, and that's no fluke. I actually think this may be controversial. I actually think Parvati could be the best player that's ever played. I have so much respect for Sandra's game. Rob knows I love him, and he's an unbelievable player. But I think I might have to put
Parvati up there as the best player.

Dee Valladares: I think I'm going to go with a common answer and say Tony. Cagayan was my first season ever, so I feel like I am attached to that season. It was the one that I was like, "I want to be on the show." And he's funny. He's obviously smart. It shouldn't work, but it works.

Emily Flippen: Oh my gosh, that is really hard. I mean, honestly, Sandra comes to mind first for me. Because when I was younger, watching this show, I mean, she's a two-time winner. And she just brings something that I always really associated with growing up. Not that I could ever play like Sandra, but I remember associating with a lot of her personality, wanting to play like Sandra. So she comes to mind first. But there's just so many people, and they have different styles. There's no one way. And I think that makes a good Survivor player, and that's what makes the game so great.

Sandra Diaz-Twine

Robert Voets/CBS

Genevieve Mushaluk: Oh god, it changes every day. Well, I just saw her, so let's go with Sandra. I was just seeing her, and she's lovely. I got quality time with Sandra, and she was indulging all these questions. So, actually, I'm indebted to Sandra now. So, she will be my answer from now on.

Joe Hunter: I know some call themselves the GOAT. I'm going to say that the best period, of all time, I would argue Boston Rob. And listen, I think some people, when you say that, they might roll their eyes or whatever, I've heard that, and this is why. If you look at how many times he played, and you look at how successful he was when he played, but also his ability to be a social genius. He understood the dynamic of people. That's what the game is, and he did it better than anybody else. He's the GOAT.

Jonathan Young: My GOAT is Boston Rob. It was very humbling to be able to play the game again, for one, but also humbling to be able to practice and train with the GOAT himself, the Mount Rushmore, the guy Boston Rob. That meant a lot that he trained me for three years. I sat at his feet, bro. And I mean, we'll see if it paid off because I did everything that Mr. Rob told me to do. Maybe could have smiled a little more.

Related: Who Will Win ‘Survivor 50’? After Watching Every Episode, Here Are Our Predictions

Kamilla Karthigesu: I'm gonna go with Kyle, because I thought his win was incredible. He managed to straddle two alliances. I did not hype him up at Ponderosa at all. I said nothing about him, and he somehow won. He won on his own, like it's not me. All right.

Kyle Fraser: I think that the GOAT is Tony. I think that, as a well-rounded winner myself, I think the way in which Tony won Winners at War cemented him as the GOAT. He checked so many boxes. He can win challenges, he can play idols, and he had everyone thinking that he was with him. And I love somebody who can play the middle like that. So, I think Tony is my GOAT all-time. But I think the best winner, one-time winner, is Kim. Kim Spradlin-Wolfe is my favorite winner of all time. I just love somebody who can play a game like that, that's checking all boxes. I think that's the most impressive performance we've seen.

Q Burdette: It's hard to say; it's too many. If I had to choose, I love Tony. You have to go with the two that have won it twice. But winning it doesn't make you the GOAT in my eyes. Because if that's the case, Bill Russell would be the goat of basketball, right? What makes you the GOAT is your impact. How did you win?

And I think Tony dominated his season. The first time he got voted out early, the next time he went on, he came back and won Winners at War. So he won, got voted out early, made adjustments, won again. To me, that's GOAT status. Other folks, maybe not. And if I had to pick a non-winner as the GOAT, come on...Cirie! You have to go with Cirie as the non-winner GOAT of Survivor. Just the overall days and impact that she's had on the game is unmatched.

Tony Vlachos

Robert Voets/CBS

Rick Devens: My quandary here is it's so easy to say Tony and Sandra, and I won't argue with you. But they also don't have a 100% win percentage like an Earl or a Vecepia. Todd was a great player.

Rizo Velovic: Oh my god, this is so hard, especially when you meet all the great players. But for me, it's always been Tony Vlachos. I think what Tony did in Cagayanto win that way was truly game-changing. I know he had a rough run in Game Changers, but then comes back on Winners at War, which was the biggest season before Survivor 50, and dominates that game. No questions about it, Tony Vlacos is my GOAT.

Savannah Louie: It's got to be Tony. I know that's so everybody else is probably saying Tony, but it's for a reason. He's such a compelling person to see on TV, amazing at social, strategy, physical. But bigger than that, I think he gives us fans something where you love that character that he is. You love watching it. He makes good TV.

Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick: I always say this: Boston Rob. I really do. And I know Sandra's won twice, and she is the queen; she's amazing. But Rob, no matter what show it is, he's just so freaking great to watch. Such good TV.

Tiffany Ervin: Oh, that is such a loaded question! You're gonna get me in trouble. Don't beat me up, but I think Cirie is the best of the best. I don't care. Listen, I've been singing Cirie's praises all night, but I was a fan of hers before I played with her. But playing alongside that woman, it's like, my gosh, she is a freaking Survivor genius. I don't care that she has never won the game. She's the best to never win, and I will say that until the day I die.

Snickers Unveils New Classic Cream Limited-Edition Whipped Cream That Fans Say They 'Need on Their Shopping List'

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 12:58pm

For millions of fans across the globe, few treats are as unwaveringly delicious as a classic Snickers candy bar.

Providing a perfect balance between rich nougat, smooth chocolate, salty caramel and crunchy peanuts, Snickers has maintained a favored place in candy aisles across the nation for a well-deserved reason.

With its undeniable popularity in supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide, many fans have recently begun stumbling on a brand-new product related to Snickers that sounds almost too good to be true.

According to a recent post on Instagram, several eagle-eyed shoppers have reported seeing cans of limited-edition Classic Cream Snickers, combining the brand's iconic whipped cream with Snickers' signature sweet flavors.

A limited-time treat perfect for ice cream sundaes, milkshakes and every other conceivable summer snack, the new Classic Cream Snickers makes the best treat imaginable, blending everything that makes Classic Cream and Snickers so uniquely tasty in the first place!

Judging from the comments on social media, most shoppers shared an unsurprisingly enthusiastic response to the new treats, voicing their plans to buy the new whipped cream as soon as they can.

"Woahhh sounds like we need to add this to our shopping list!" one user commented on Instagram.

"I hope that's not exclusive!" another shopper added. "I'm tempted to make a Snickers pie and then top it off with this so it's Snickers overload. I'll call it Snickers Overload Pie."

Sadly, as the above comment indicated, it's not year clear whether the new whipped cream will arrive at larger retailers across the country. Right now, it seems the only place to find the cans of the Classic Cream dessert is at select regional supermarket chains, including Festival Foods and Woodman's.

If the new treat does roll out to major retailers, it's highly advisable to get the canned dessert as soon as you can before it's officially gone for the season!

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 12:42pm

Little Debbie is kicking off summer with the release of a new collection of sweet treats. Featuring returning favorites along with two brand-new products, the Summer of Soccer lineup is bringing sports fans of all kinds the perfect selection to reach for to enjoy the best of summer snacking.

Heading to major stores like Walmart, Target, Stop and Shop, and more this June, according to food insider Markie Devo, are Little Debbie's S'mores Mini Muffins, Mini Summer of Soccer Donuts, Summer of Soccer Brownies, and Gingerbread Soft Cookies.

The mini muffins are a new flavor for the brand, and are made with "real chocolate chips," as noted on the packaging. The box includes five packages with four bite-sized muffins per pouch. Meanwhile, the new brownies are designed for the biggest of soccer fans: green icing covers the top of the chocolatey snack, with a soccer ball, a cleat, or a soccer field etched into the sugary coating.

While the mini donuts and soft gingerbread cookies seem to be returning favorites, they're decked out in red, white, and blue detailing—and they're not the only thing sporting patriotic colors. Little Debbie herself, the brand's mascot/logo, got a complete makeover for the new release. On the special-edition packaging, the red-headed girl is rocking a soccer jersey and a sweat band—and fans can even get their hands on her attire for themselves.

In addition to the treat lineup, the snack giant is debuting a limited-edition soccer jersey and merchandise. "Designed to celebrate the sweetness of summer, this limited-edition Little Debbie jersey blends bold color and Little Debbie style. The number 60 pays tribute to Little Debbie’s founding in 1960. A celebration of the moments, memories, and sweet traditions that have been part of summer for generations. From backyard gatherings to summer watch parties, this jersey was made to stand out wherever the season takes you," the website states.

MCU Star Warns America Is in a ‘Really, Really Bad Place’

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 12:41pm

Two years ago, Sebastian Stan stepped into a role much different from his Winter Soldier character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wearing a slick blonde wig and a suit, Stan transformed into Donald Trump in The Apprentice, a film that The New York Times called a “gleefully vulgar fictional dramatization” of the current president.

During a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, Stan slammed Trump and said that what’s going on in the United States is “no laughing matter.”

"I think we’re in a really, really bad place. I really do," Stan said to Variety. "And to be honest with you, when you’re looking at what’s happening, right now -- if we’re talking about the consolidation of the media, censorship, threats, the supposed lawsuits that seemingly never end but don’t actually go anywhere. You know, the writing was on the wall.”

Reflecting on his time in The Apprentice, Stan recounted the controversy surrounding the film.

“We encountered all that with the movie [The Apprentice] to the point that we were, three days before the festival, unsure if the movie was going to play the festival. So maybe people are paying attention more to that film, I think it will stand the test of time for that. But we went through all of it right before Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert and so on. So, I wish it wasn’t like that."

The press conference came after Stan received a 10-minute standing ovation for his new family drama, Fjord. Alongside his co-star Renate Reinsve, the two were in tears at the support from the Cannes audience.

Fjord follows a Romanian family who emigrate to a Norwegian village. The story turns nightmarish as their children are stripped from them because of alleged abuse. According to Variety, “The premiere audience gasped and snorted in disbelief as Stan and Reinsve suffer the indignity of an overreaching state — removing teens, tweens and an infant from their loving care.”

With Stan’s own child on the way with his partner Annabelle Wallis, the actor reflected on the themes of fatherhood in Fjord, and said simply to Deadline, “I want to be a good dad.”

'Heated Rivalry' Author Tells Podcaster Nicole Byer How She Got Her Start in Steamy Hockey Romance—And It's Pretty Saucy

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 12:35pm

Rachel Reid's journey to becoming one of the hottest romance authors on the planet started in a pretty unexpected place: a burlesque troupe in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The author of the wildly successful Heated Rivalry series appeared on the latest episode of comedian Nicole Byer's podcast "Why Won't You Date Me?" and opened up about her colorful past, her enduring marriage, and how she ended up writing steamy hockey romance novels that have now been adapted into a blockbuster HBO Max series the world can’t seem to get enough of.

The origin story alone is worth the listen. Reid met her husband Matt while performing in a burlesque show—he was the keyboard player, and she had the car. "We met doing burlesque together," Reid told Byer. She performed under the name "Misconduct" and specialized in sports-themed comedy acts, a precursor to her books, perhaps?

"I was named Misconduct, and I did sports and largely hockey-themed stripping and comedy stuff and some music," Reid explained. One particularly memorable act involved coming out in full borrowed hockey "attire" that was, well, less than fresh. "For one of my acts, I did, and I borrowed it from a guy, and it smelled so bad. I went down to pasties, I think."

The smell of hockey gear became something of a running theme in the conversation—one that Reid clearly has strong opinions about. "It's the worst smell. I don't think there's a worse smell than hockey gear," she said, and Byer was quick to agree. What Reid didn't mention in her books, she revealed on the podcast: "They smell bad, so bad."

From Burlesque to Bestseller

The burlesque experience stuck with Reid. Years later, she’d draw from that saucy experience when writing her hockey romance series, starting with Game Changer in 2018 and Heated Rivalry in 2019. The books languished in relative obscurity until a television adaptation debuted on HBO Max in November 2025, taking the series—and its fictional stars, Shane and Ilya—completely viral.

Now, with the show averaging 10 million viewers per episode and Reid's books selling more than 1.3 million copies, the author's life has transformed completely. A highly anticipated third book in the Shane and Ilya saga arrives in 2027—and fans are already counting down the days.

1989 Cover of ‘70s No. 1 Hit Became Band’s First Mainstream Radio Smash

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 12:32pm

In 1989, the Red Hot Chili Peppers found chart success with the song “Higher Ground.” The cover of Stevie Wonder’s No. 1 R&B hit was the lead single from the California rock band’s fourth album, Mother’s Milk. It hit No. 11 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and No. 26 on the mainstream Rock chart in April 1989. The song also received heavy rotation airplay on MTV, giving the Chili Peppers long-overdue mainstream success.

The hard-rocking “Higher Ground” cover kicks off with a distinctive bassline by Flea, and its spoken word outro pays homage to Wonder’s 1973 classic.

"And Stevie knows that nobody's gonna bring me down, 'Cause me and Stevie, see, we're gonna be sailing on the funky, funky sound,” singer Anthony Kiedis declares.

In a 1980s interview posted by Sunset Vinyl, Kiedis claimed the idea for the Wonder cover came from the band’s management. “It was really the record company's idea. They gave us two choices. Either cover 'Hang Tough' by New Kids on the Block or 'Higher Ground' by Stevie,” he joked. “We deliberated anxiously for hours, and what it finally came down to is flipping a coin. We flipped the coin, and Stevie came up.”

“No spirit, no soul, no conviction, no wonder really,” he cracked of the cover of the classic song.

During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, band member John Frusciante shared the true story behind the cover. “Flea was saying what a good idea it would be to do a heavy metal version of ‘Higher Ground,'” the guitar player recalled. “You know, because it was in the ’80s when there was so much bad heavy metal, and Flea was like, ‘Heavy metal can be so rockin.'' We definitely weren’t thinking ‘Let’s do a really ambitious, courageous thing’, you know? For us, it was just like ‘Sounds like a cool idea, let’s try it’."

During the same interview, drummer Chad Smith recalled that Wonder was asked if he liked the Chili Peppers version of his song, and the music legend replied, “I like the publishing checks.”

Fueled by the popularity of “Higher Ground,” the Red Hot Chili Peppers were poised for mainstream success with their follow-up album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The 1991 album featured the hit singles “Under the Bridge,” “Give It Away,” “Breaking the Girl,” and more.
