A 1969 Classic Named One of the 'Best Animated Series of All Time' is Getting a Surprising Japanese Reboot
It’s been 57 years since the beloved mystery-solving teenagers first appeared on screen, and now they’re coming back. Scooby-Doo is getting a new spinoff!
Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and of course, everyone’s favorite Great Dane are headed to Japan. Tubi has ordered a new series, Yokoso Scooby-Doo!, from Warner Bros. Animation.
The show will star original 1969 cast member FrankWelker and seasoned Scooby-Doo actor MatthewLillard, who has been part of the series since 2002.
The franchise has been wildly successful. It spans 13 animated series, 7 television specials, and 45 films, as well as 15 comics and 20 video games. It is beloved by critics and audiences alike. The original Scooby-Doo show was included in IndieWire’s “Best Animated Series of All Time.”
The 1969 show follows a group of groovy friends who ride around in a van called the Mystery Machine. They solve crimes, typically about seemingly supernatural creatures, through mistakes and playful hijinks.
Yokoso Scooby-Doo! drops Shaggy and Scooby in Japan as they embark on the “ultimate foodie adventure,” according to the logline (reported by Variety). The duo “unwittingly unleash hundreds of mythical monsters that are causing trouble across the country. With the help of Scooby’s uncle, Daisuke-Doo, along with new friends, a magical girl Yume and gadget whiz Takumi, the group embarks on an all-new mystery filled with monster chasing and fun chaos.”
It will be the first anime in the Scooby-Doo franchise.
“Scooby-Doo is one of the most beloved franchises in entertainment, and Yokoso Scooby-Doo! lets us reinvent it in a way fans haven’t seen before,” said Tubi chief content officer Adam Lewinson. “By bringing Scooby and Shaggy into a bold anime world set in Japan, we’re connecting with global fandoms and delivering the kind of fun, chaotic mystery that travels across generations. As we grow our animation slate, this is exactly our brand of fan-first storytelling — familiar, surprising, and unmistakably Tubi.”
Yokoso Scooby-Doo! will air on Tubi in the U.S. and Cartoon Network internationally.
Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt's Oldest Daughter Just Made a Bold Statement About Her Relationship With Her Dad
Congratulations are in order for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's oldest daughter, Zahara. The 21-year-old graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Atlanta's Spelman College on May 17. Jolie was in attendance, along with sons Pax, 22, and Knox, 17, to cheer Zahara on. However, her dad was noticeably absent.
"Zahara Marley Jolie," the announcer called out as Zahara crossed the stage to receive her diploma in a video posted on X. Many were quick to note that "Pitt" was dropped and was also missing from the event program.

— 𐌊𖤓 (@lyntwig_) May 17, 2026"So glad they respected the last name she wants to go by. Congrats Zahara," one fan commented, as one noted that her legal name is Jolie-Pitt.
The omission isn't surprising but rather a natural progression. When she joined the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha in 2023, an EssenceTikTok showed her introducing herself as Zahara Marley Jolie.
Zahara Honors Jolie's InfluenceMost recently, she was listed as Zahara Jolie at the Pearls of Purpose Foundation's "Dearest Mother & Daughter: A Most Delightful Brunch Experience" in April. There, she also gave a speech about her and Jolie's "unique, almost kindred relationship."
View this post on InstagramShe talked about being adopted at six months old, and that she and her siblings had "a mom who raised us on the value of helping others, being kind, and always striving for growth as people."
"These values may sound simple, but in a world where kindness is overlooked and helping others comes at a cost, I am grateful to have had a role model to show me what it looks like to be a decent human being," she said.
"For any daughters in the room who may know the feeling of seeing their mom as a superhero and not knowing how she does it," she added, per an Instagram video. "This is something I've been trying to understand my whole life. She's the most selfless, loving, and understanding woman who I get to call my mom."
A Growing Pattern Among the SiblingsZahara's move is the latest statement regarding the estranged relationship Pitt has with his kids. Shiloh filed to legally drop Pitt from her name in 2024, shortly after her 18th birthday. Vivienne, 17, who co-produced the musical The Outsiders with Jolie, was listed in the production's program as Vivienne Jolie.
In February 2026, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, 24, became the latest sibling to drop Pitt from their name. In the credits for Couture, where he worked as the third assistant director, his name also appeared without his famous father's name attached.
What Is a ‘Beta Mom,’ Exactly? 7 Common Traits, According to a Psychologist
"Helicopter parent," "Montessori mom," "gentle parent," "free-range family," "FAFO parenting." All of the above are common terms in the parenting zeitgeist. It's a crowded space, but social media has made space for another: Beta Moms, a trending parenting label used to describe a specific type of mother.
Did anyone ask for this? It can be harder to keep track of all the parenting trends and "labels" than to remember all the "rules" for infant sleep and whatever your kindergartener needs to wear for the (what feels like) 200th spirit week of the school year.
"The danger of identifying too closely with a label is that it becomes rigid," says Dr. Emily Guarnotta, Psy.D., PMH-C, a psychologist and founder of Phoenix Health. "When we lean too hard on a label, we might feel shame or guilt when we occasionally step away from it. Children are also dynamic and require us to be adaptive and flexible. If we stick too hard to one label, we might miss opportunities when our children need a different version of us."
But perhaps some people did ask for a new label in "Beta Mom." Sure, the number of styles and labels for caregivers can become overwhelming over time, but Dr. Guarnotta, who specializes in motherhood, says they have their place if parents are flexible with them.
"Labels for parenting styles can be helpful because for some parents, they provide validation and a sense of community," she tells Parade. "When a parent identifies with a certain style and learns that there are other parents like them, they feel understood. It’s like a shared language that connects like-minded parents."
So, regardless of where you stand on the labeling trend, you may be curious: What is a Beta Mom? Is she me? Below, our expert shares insights on the differences between Alpha Mom and Beta Mom, seven traits of a Beta Mom and more.

The Good Brigade/Getty Images
What Is a Beta Mom, Exactly?Dr. Guarnotta shares that Beta Mom is a recent viral parenting trend or label for a parenting style.
"It refers to a mom who rejects the 'Alpha' or Type A approach to parenting, and instead takes a 'good enough' approach," she explains.
Beta Moms don't focus on milestone achievements, overscheduling or a curated aesthetic. You won't see them using a ton of headspace to think about the precise number of wooden toys to have on an open shelf. Instead, Dr. Guarnotta says Beta Moms place a premium on "emotional attunement and flexibility."
"A Beta Mom surrenders to the messiness of motherhood, rather than trying to control," she tells Parade.

Alpha Mom vs. Beta Mom: What's the Difference?Dr. Guarnotta notes that Alpha Moms are driven by achievement and structure.
"The Alpha Mom... likes to be in control and is always 'doing,'" she states. "The Beta Mom’s approach is acceptance and letting go."
For instance, say a child is having a tantrum, as children (and teens and even adults) do. She says an Alpha Mom will see the situation as a problem requiring a solution, while the Beta Mom will attempt to ride the emotional waves.
Now, Dr. Guarnotta has a big disclaimer here:
"While we’re using labels to describe different types of moms, most moms have traits of both categories," she emphasizes. "Mothers are dynamic humans, just like their children, so we need to be aware of not leaning too much on one label, but finding our own unique rhythm."
And remember, parenting isn't a competition—people who sway "Alpha" aren't "against" or "better than" their Beta Mom counterparts, and vice versa.
7 Common Traits of a Beta Mom, According to a Psychologist1. They value being "good enough" over "perfect"If parents got Yelp reviews, a Beta Mom wouldn't check hers much. She's not seeking straight A+'s either. It's not that Beta Moms don't want to do right by their kids. They just don't think they can do that if they're approaching it without room for error.
"Beta Moms believe that striving for perfection is a fast track to burnout, for themselves and their kids," Dr. Guarnotta states. "Their goal is 'good enough,' meaning doing what needs to be done without putting unnecessary pressure to overdo. They also view mistakes as learning opportunities and encourage their kids to mess up."
2. They're flexible with routines and schedulesBeta Moms don't let the clock dictate every aspect of their lives. Rigid infant sleep schedules or vacations planned down to the millisecond? Not their jams.
"Beta Moms have routines that are adaptable, not rigid. If their child is playing and enjoying themselves, they’ll let the schedule go for the sake of the moment," Dr. Guarnotta says. "They are good at pivoting and adapting to life’s inevitable changes."
3. They rely on intuition-led decision makingIt's unlikely you'll find every parenting book imaginable on a Beta mother's bookshelf, nor will you see her name on every momfluencer and dadfluencer's follower list. Her inbox is not full of parenting Substack newsletters.
"Beta Moms rely heavily on their own gut feelings and their child’s cues," Dr. Guarnotta explains. "She understands that she is the expert on her child, and she trusts in herself to make good decisions and ignores the outside noise."
4. Their competitive drive is lowerDr. Guarnotta says Beta Moms don't view motherhood as a sport or a race.
"She doesn’t compare herself to other moms and their standards," the psychologist explains. "She has her own internal standards to follow. She doesn’t care that she forgot spirit day or has a messier house than her child’s friends. She doesn’t compare herself to anyone else."
5. Beta Moms lean into emotional attunementBeta Moms never got on the spinning hamster wheel of achievement culture.
"For Beta Moms, a child’s emotional well-being is more important than their academic or extracurricular achievements," Dr. Guarnotta shares. "She spends more energy on how her child is feeling, rather than how they are performing. She prioritizes active listening, empathy and co-regulation."
6. They embrace the mess"Bless this mess" is not just a cute slogan for a baby bib. For Beta Moms, it's a character trait and way of life.
"Beta Moms don’t stress out about a messy house or an off-day," Dr. Guarnotta notes. "She understands that life is chaotic and trying to force things is a losing battle. She accepts that life and motherhood are messy and doesn’t try to control what is outside of her control."
7. They ask for helpBeta Moms don't try to white-knuckle it through parenting, even if it can feel like society is becoming more individualistic by the millisecond.
"Beta Moms don’t fear asking for help," Dr. Guarnotta shares. "They know that they can’t do it all alone, and they don’t see asking for help as a sign of weakness. She values her village and welcomes additional support."
7 Common Beta Mom PhrasesYou might be a Beta Mom if you find yourself regularly saying any of the following phrases.
1. "It is what it is"It's a soothing act of surrender.
"This phrase is surrendering to what is beyond your control," Dr. Guarnotta shares. "It’s a form of radical acceptance. When bad weather cancels a park day, a Beta Mom just lets it go. She doesn’t harp on what should have happened. She just moves on."
2. "We're doing our best"No mother is perfect, but so many mothers have the best of intentions, even if they mess up. Beta Moms have internalized this idea, so don't be surprised if you hear one externalize it, whether she wants to lift another mother in the trenches or herself.
"This phrase acknowledges that we’re all doing our best and our best looks different day to day," Dr. Guarnotta says. "She doesn’t beat herself up when she has an off-day. She practices self-compassion and focuses on moving forward."
3. “Let’s see how it goes”Overplanning and overscheduling feel like all the rage as everyone tries to keep up with the Joneses. Beta Moms often opt out by using this phrase.
"This phrase is all about leaving room for adaptation," Dr. Guarnotta explains. "Beta Moms know that they can’t control everything, so this phrase reduces the pressure and allows her to wing it."
Plus, she notes that when Beta Moms take this approach, they leave room for spontaneous moments.
4. “Good enough is good enough”What mother doesn't need to hear this one multiple times per week? Beta Moms say it to themselves.
"When she says this, she’s saying that the goal isn’t to be perfect—it’s to do your best and not beat yourself up," Dr. Guarnotta says. "She might use this phrase when she buys a store-bought cake instead of making it from scratch."
The psychologist notes that these moms view their mental energy as currency, and they won't waste it on unnecessary guilt.
5. “That sounds like a future problem”Is my five-year-old's three-foot-long holiday wish list a flag that he'll grow up to be the world's most entitled adult? My daughter just lied about brushing her teeth—is prison next? Beta Moms don't panic about the future after every little snafu.
"This phrase reminds her to stay in the present moment, rather than spiraling about what-if future scenarios," Dr. Guarnotta notes. "It stops her from stressing out about things that haven’t happened yet and reminds her to be here now. This is a boundary that she sets for herself against the mental load."
6. “I’m learning as I go, too”Beta Moms can be so laidback that we peg them as "complacent." But Dr. Guarnotta says they're anything but. In fact, their flexibility helps them evolve.
"Beta Moms like to model a growth mindset and humility," Dr. Guarnotta states. "They remind their children that they’re learning too, and being an adult doesn’t mean that you have all the answers. This levels the playing field and builds mutual respect with their children."
7. “Comparison is the thief of joy”This one is a common phrase in parenting groups, but Beta Moms truly believe and mean what they say.
"This phrase reminds her not to compare herself to the highlight reels on social media," Dr. Guarnotta notes. "Her goal isn’t to be better than anyone else. It’s to be the best version of herself. She reminds herself to look internally for validation, rather than externally."

22-Year-Old Cult Classic Rom-Com Gets an Anne Hathaway-Led Disney+ Adaptation
After 22 years, the cult classic fairytale movie Ella Enchanted, starring Anne Hathaway, is getting a Disney+ TV series adaptation, led by Hathaway herself.
As reported by Deadline, the Ella Enchanted series is currently in the early stages of development, with Hathaway set to executive produce.
Like the movie on which the show is based, the series' story will center on Ella of Frell, a teenage girl who is forced by magic to obey every command given to her—from treacherous commands from villainous figures to accidental commands from family and friends.
As is clear from that premise alone, Ella constantly faces precarious situations (which makes for a brilliant movie and will undoubtedly be equally fascinating to see play out in a show).
However, the new adaptation will apparently be breaking with the movie's Cinderella story approach, opting instead for a coming-of-age tale that is set in a boarding school—a far cry from the epic fairytale adventure that Ella experiences in Hathaway's 2004 movie, complete with dramatic musical numbers.
The adaptation's approach will therefore match, at least in part, a few chapters of the 1997 book of the same name, on which the movie was based.
As also reported by Deadline, the Ella Enchanted series will be written by Ilana Wolpert, with Beth Schwartz as showrunner.
Hathaway is currently having a bit of a renaissance in terms of bringing some of her most beloved stories back to the screen with adaptations and sequels. Just recently, The Devil Wears Prada 2was released in theaters, 20 years after the original movie debuted.
Likewise, a second sequel to Hathaway's fan-favorite 2001 movie The Princess Diaries, The Princess Diaries 3, has officially been in the works since 2024, although progress on that movie seems to be a bit slower, with few updates coming out over the last few years.
1973 Classic Rock Song That Became a Massive Hit in the US Was Banned by the BBC
“Kodachrome” was a 1973 song by Paul Simon from his third studio album, There Goes Rhymin’ Simon. It was released 53 years ago today, on May 19.
The song, which was named after a film brand that is now discontinued by Kodak, has lyrics like, “Kodachrome, they give us those nice bright colors, give us the greens of summers, makes you think all the world's a sunny day. I got a Nikon camera. I love to take a photograph, so mama don't take my Kodachrome away.”
Although the song became a hit in the United States, rising all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it was banned by the BBC and the Federation of Australian Radio Broadcasters because of its title, which was trademarked. Kodachrome was a brand of color reversal film initially introduced in 1935. However, its manufacturer was discontinued in 2009 once digital photography became more popular.
Simon, who has had many hits as a solo artist and as a part of Simon & Garfunkel, is currently 84. He is still actively touring and recording new music.
In a 2016 interview with Billboard, Simon discussed his songwriting process. When the interviewer asked whether he ever comes up with songs in a flash, he said, “Well, that’s what happened with ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.’ That’s rare, when you get into flow like that and something comes unedited and pure and with a degree of clarity and intensity. It doesn’t usually last very long, and you can’t manufacture it again. I mean, you could try, if you want to use a substance or something. It’s a mystery, writing songs.”
Related: 1989 Rock Hit Released 37 Years Ago Today Came From an Iconic Band That’s Still Touring in Their 70s
Simon continued, “I think that is why I’ve been doing it for all this time. I like that mystery: ‘How come I feel this way? Why do I hear this thing in my head, but can’t quite get it to come alive?' On those occasions that you do get it right, when you say what you want to say with music and words — the dopamine floods through your brain, and whoa! You’re hooked. You could spend years trying again, because you want that dopamine fix.”
This 1981 Rock Classic Became the First No. 1 Song on Billboard’s Rock Chart
In 1981, Billboard launched a brand-new chart dedicated entirely to rock radio, helping define a new era for album-oriented rock stations across America.
The very first song to top the chart was Eric Clapton’s “I Can’t Stand It.”

Released as the lead single from Clapton’s Another Ticket album, the song became the first No. 1 hit on Billboard’s newly created Top Tracks chart on March 21, 1981. The chart would later evolve into today’s Mainstream Rock chart.
At the time, album rock radio was booming in popularity, but Billboard had never created a chart specifically measuring what rock stations were actually playing.
Unlike pop radio, many rock stations focused less on singles and more on entire albums, often spinning deep cuts alongside major hits. Billboard launched the Top Tracks chart to better track the songs dominating rock radio playlists.
“I Can’t Stand It” immediately made history.

The song held the No. 1 spot for two weeks and also became a major crossover hit, reaching No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Driven by a tight blues-rock groove, sharp guitar riffs and Clapton’s simmering vocal performance, the track helped define the polished rock sound dominating FM radio in the early 1980s.

Record World praised the song upon release, calling it a “dark, driving rocker” featuring Clapton’s “vocal lurking ominously around drum spanks and keyboard textures.”
AllMusic critic Matthew Greenwald later described the song as “a solid, soul-oriented rocker” and praised Clapton’s “venomous jealousy” lyrics along with the song’s Booker T. & the M.G.’s-inspired groove.
The recording also arrived during a turbulent period in Clapton’s life and career.
Related: 1965 No. 1, Ranked Among Greatest Rock Songs Ever, Came to Guitarist in a Dream
According to AllMusic critic William Ruhlmann, Clapton collapsed during the album’s promotional tour after suffering severe health complications tied to alcoholism. Ruhlmann also noted that Another Ticket ultimately became the final studio album in Clapton’s long relationship with Polydor Records.
Despite those challenges, the album still reached the Top 10 and produced one of Clapton’s biggest hits of the era.
The song featured Clapton alongside an all-British backing band that included guitarist Albert Lee, keyboardist Gary Brooker of Procol Harum, bassist Dave Markee and drummer Henry Spinetti.
More than 40 years later, “I Can’t Stand It” remains a key piece of rock-radio history, not only as a hit song, but as the track that officially launched Billboard’s rock chart era.

Williams was the only one who guessed FJ correctly, adding to his already massive lead at the end of the DJ round and sealing his victory. Coming into the final with $21,200, wagering $12,201 for a total of $33,401. It was a classic “cover” bet that was strategically sound, ensuring that if Sloan wagered everything and answered correctly, he would have still beaten her by a $1.
Sloan trailed closely behind, entering with $16,700, wagering $4,501 and getting it wrong ("Who is Hubbard"), dropping to an end game total of $12,199. Meanwhile, Hebbar wagered nearly all of his $800 earnings, walking away with a symbolic $1 after getting FJ wrong with "Who is Lewis").

If You Loved ‘Ready or Not,’ This New Novel From Rachel Moore Has To Be Your Next Read — And It Needs To Be a Movie
There are some novels that catch you from the title, and that’s certainly the case with Safari Murder Party by Rachel Moore.
The new novel is going to be perfect for fans of Ready or Not, where you have a great mixture of thriller and comedy. You start to wonder if anything can become even more ludicrous in the best way possible.
Safari Murder Party, which was released on May 19, 2026, followed Fletcher Spence. For the last few years, she has worked her butt off to prove that she is more than just a good PA. As the personal assistant to the CEO of Cartwright Media, she has put in enough 70-hour work weeks for a lifetime, and it was all to get onto the company’s safari retreat.
Maybe this one was the one that she shouldn’t have been a part of. It turns into a kill-or-be-killed situation, almost with a Hunger Games vibe, as it becomes a fight to be the top dog. Literally, the top dog of the company! The only person Fletcher may be able to trust is the son of the CEO, Waylon, with whom she seems to have some sort of history.
There’s no doubt that the initial plot is going to draw you in. Who doesn’t love a look at just how vicious the corporate life can be? We all know what the magazine industry can be like. The Devil Wears Prada and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days told us everything we needed to know, and Safari Murder Party grasps the ideas with both hands and runs with them.
It’s easy to relate to Fletcher. All she wants to do is prove herself and achieve her dream job of being a photographer for the magazine. She thought that would mean proving her photography skills, but she learned that she also needs to show that she can survive the wild. Not only does she have others from the company who want to kill her, but there are literal wild animals able to get to them.
View this post on InstagramThe winner has to survive five days on this island with the electric fence shut down, meaning all the animals can get in. In fact, there’s a taste of that threat within the first 50 pages, so you know what could happen as the story gets wilder.
The best part is that has a damn good PA, she knows everyone who works at the company. She knows their routines, their allergies, and their own skills. There are a few details that she learns along the way, such as a woman called Eliza connected to Waylon, but her ability to learn information and hold onto it for when she needs it is life-saving.
I did worry about the story being told from Fletcher’s POV. After all, it leads to a lack of character development for a few others in the story, but I feel like we get plenty of development for Waylon. There’s a great will-they-won’t-they storyline going on between them, but they also need to keep the focus on surviving. Opting to start with the prologue, that is the two of them huddled together, was a great way to set the tension, but also to set the potential romance brewing between them.
Safari Murder Party is one of those books that I can immediately envision as a movie. It’s packed with adventure and humor, and it’s perfect for those who have falling in love with Glass Onion and Ready or Not. There’s just that perfect balance of intrigue, humor, and terror thrown into one.
Harry Styles Fans Express Outrage Over Concert Views — Tour Rep Responds Amid Backlash
Harry Styles' "Together Together" tour has officially begun, but it hasn't been smooth sailing for some.
Multiple fans who paid for special “VIP” floor tickets have voiced their complaints because their views were obstructed. And that has prompted a representative from the tour to speak out.
"The floor concept was designed to give fans freedom of movement and the ability to experience the show from different positions, rather than being confined to one fixed viewing angle,” the statement reads, per Variety. "That open, free-flowing floor experience has always been an essential part of Harry’s live shows. A small area of the staging in specific floor positions appears to have had a restricted sightline. Those areas are being reviewed carefully and adjusted where possible in compliance with all safety restrictions.”
The outlet adds that the expectation is that the adjustments will be "made in the coming days."
When the videos first started circulating, fans were not holding back on social media.
"harrystyles mate you should be ashamed of yourself, can’t believe what i’m seeing on the timeline of that tour, people who have paid crazy amounts of money to then not be able to see anything? and then the vip is outrageous too, nah he’s actually robbed yous all blind," one person posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Exorbitant prices, ridiculous VIP package, tote bag for 40€ and an excessively high stage….Harry Styles, what have you become, thank goodness I went to the Love on Tour," another fan expressed.
Styles kicked off the "Together Together" tour in dominating fashion, performing in front of 56,000 fans in Amsterdam. And among those fans was his fiancée, Zoë Kravitz, who was spotted dancing in the crowd alongside James Corden, videos on social media show. Kravitz kept a low profile, wearing a black coat, sunglasses, and a black baseball cap.
This marks the pop star's first tour in three years, having last performed live during his "Love On Tour," which concluded in July 2023. Having kicked things off in Amsterdam, he is headed to London, followed by New York, São Paulo, Mexico City, Melbourne, and Sydney. And with that, his performance in New York, which marks his only stop in New York, features 30 different concert dates.
1973 Horror Film's Set Burned Down During Production - Only One Room Survived Untouched
There are horror movies that scare you out of your mind. And then there's The Exorcist.
During production, the MacNeil house set caught fire and burned almost entirely: delaying filming for six weeks.
But here's where it gets freaky: only one room survived the fire completely untouched.
It was Reagan's bedroom. The nexus of the possession. The room where a 12-year-old child would be tormented by the demon Pazuzu.
Photo by Bettmann on Getty Images
Everything surrounding it burned to the ground. That one single room? Not a single scorch mark.
Fire investigators couldn't determine the cause. There was no electrical malfunction, no evidence of arson and no plausible explanation.
The crew saw it as a bad omen. Some even refused to return to work, convinced the production was actually cursed.
They might have been onto something.
Why The Exorcist Still Terrifies Horror Fans 51 Years LaterFifty-one years after its 1973 release, The Exorcist remains not only the #1 horror film but one that breaks even the most cynical horror fans. Even if you can survive a thousand slasher films and giggle your way through every single jump scare—The Exorcist will still give you nightmares.
You can ask any horror enthusiasts about the first movie that truly terrified them, and The Exorcist is always mentioned. People who watched it, especially those who watched it when they were young, remember that feeling of genuine, primal fear. The kind that follows you home and keeps you up at night.
Photo by Screen Archives on Getty Images
The kind that doesn't go away.
Here's the thing: it doesn't feel like fiction.
Maybe that's because it wasn't entirely made up. The film was based on a real 1949 exorcism of a 14-year-old boy known as "Roland Doe," who endured dozens of exorcism attempts. Writer William Peter Blatty read about the exorcism in The Washington Post and turned it into his novel. Director William Friedkin did his research and gathered diary entries and eyewitness accounts to make the film as authentic as it could be.
Or maybe it's because the production itself felt like it was literally cursed.
Nine people connected to the film died during or shortly after production. The deaths kept adding up — cast, crew, family members — until even the skeptics had to pay attention.
Director William Friedkin eventually had a priest bless the set.
After the set was rebuilt after the fire, it felt different to everyone. It felt colder, heavier and like the air itself had changed in some sinister way.
The fear witnessed on screen became all the more authentic because the fear behind the camera was real.
Photo by Silver Screen Collection on Getty Images
When the film was initially released, audiences had extreme, violent physical reactions unlike anything seen before. People fainted, vomited and ran from theaters to escape the nightmare. Paramedics were called regularly. Theaters even stationed nurses in lobbies.
But the real reason The Exorcist still works is simpler: it depicts the corruption of innocence. A trusting child becomes the site of something unspeakably unholy.
Modern horror movies have tried to replicate that eerie formula thousands of times. But nothing has matched the raw, visceral terror of Linda Blair's performance. The demonic voice. The way her body seizes.
More than 50 years later, it's still the story that makes horror fans — people who've seen everything — admit that they're genuinely terrified.
Some movies just get under your skin and stay there forever.
The Exorcist is that movie for me.
That mysterious blaze that broke out and spared only the demon's room?
Maybe it was all just a coincidence or maybe some productions are touched by something that makes the horror feel a little too authentic.
1977 Soft-Rock Ballad With Iconic Guitar Solo Became an Era-Defining No. 1 Hit
It’s the song that helped a group set sail.
Player’s “Baby Come Back,” a soft-rock essential and one of the signature tracks that defines the subgenre of yacht rock, was born from stormy times, but these days induces nothing but blue skies. Featuring gorgeous arrangements and melodic precision from the foursome, the song was also just praised for its iconic guitar solo by Rolling Stone.

View this post on Instagram“The solo on ‘Baby Come Back’ is groovy and dramatic,” the outlet wrote. “It’s one of those you find yourself singing along to, which is always a good sign. You can’t sing along to a lot of really virtuosy guitar solos. But yacht rock ones, you find yourself almost like karaoke-ing them.”
Performed by lead vocalist Peter Beckett, the guitar solo closes out the song. It’s restrained over flashy, silky over searing, and it’s the perfect complement to an achingly wistful West Coast soft-rock ballad.
Co-written by Beckett and fellow singer-guitarist J.C. Crowley, the band’s signature hit is rooted in real heartbreak, as the two channeled their own respective breakups at the time into the lyrics, per American Songwriter. The second it was done, they knew they had a hit.
“The minute we wrote it we knew we had something, because we liked playing it,” Beckett told Popdose in 2013. “There was just some magic there. Everybody kind of knew,” he added.
After the song landed Player their first record deal, the band -- which also included Ron Moss on the bass and John Friesen on the drums -- released it as the lead single off their eponymous debut studio album in 1977. The track climbed the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 1 on January 14, 1978, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks. It also earned Player Billboard Magazine's title for Best New Single Artist of 1978.
Today, the soft-rock breakup ballad remains Player’s signature track and one of the defining songs of the late 1970s. Nicholas Niespodziani of tribute band Yacht Rock Revueput it best when he told Songfacts, “‘Baby Come Back’ is such a great tune melodically, and the emotion of it really connects with people. I noticed that when we do it, there’s something undeniably sexy about it, and it still works for those dudes all these years later.”

Christina Applegate Sends Blunt Reminder to Fans Amid Health Concerns
Beloved actress Christina Applegate sent a blunt reminder to fans as she bravely continues to fight amid her latest health issues.
Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021 and has faced several challenges since then with her health. The Married with Children alum has been brutally honest about her struggles with the disease.
In March, Applegate was reportedly hospitalized, raising concerns for the actress. While Applegate hasn’t addressed the hospitalization rumors, she has used social media to keep in touch with fans.
Apple’s latest Instagram post was not only a reminder to fans but also an update to let them know she’s doing okay.
“Hey, my messy Messertons. I'm just checking in with you because I know you haven't heard from me for a bit. I just wanted you to know as a good and thinking about all of you and thank you for your well wishes and yeah, peace out. Oh, and don't forget, don't forget this about yourself too, okay? I am a f------g bada--. I'm a bada--. I'm a bada--. I'm a bada--,” she shared in a video where she talked but was not seen.
Instead, the words she said overlaid on top of the photos from Applegate’s podcast MeSsy with The Sopranos alum Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also suffers from MS.
“love my @messypodcast community. We’re all Bada---s!” Applegate wrote as the caption on her Instagram post.

Paul McCartney, 83, Reveals Why He Refuses To Take Photos With His Fans
Paul McCartney recently revealed that he refuses to take photographs with his fans. He opened up about his decision on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, which aired on May 14.
“I say, ‘I'm sorry, I don't do pictures.' And that is like, radical these days,” the singer said. “I have a long explanation. Oh God, it goes on. I say, ‘No, I don't like to do that, because it's important to me…' I feel [normalness] is very important to me. The minute I get like, above myself and start thinking I'm something else, I won't like me. So it's very important for me to be sort of just me.”
McCartney continued, “There's a guy on the beachfront who's got a monkey, and you pay to have your photo taken with the monkey. So I say, ‘I really do not want to feel like that monkey. And when I take a picture with you, I do feel like him. I'm not me. I'm suddenly something else. It's a phenomenon of how we live now.' And then they go back to their friends and they say, ‘You met Paul McCartney? Did you get a picture?' ‘No, he just went on about some bloody monkey.'”

The Boys of Dungeon Lane, his newest album, is being released on May 29. It features his first duet with his bandmate from The Beatles, Ringo Starr. The track is called “Home to Us.”
When speaking about the album with MOJO magazine, McCartney discussed what it was like to be in a band that had such a strong impact on the world. “I think about that, particularly because people will tell me the story according to their own experience," he said. "So Bruce Springsteen, who I know as a friend, tells a story, and it’s a very similar story to what a lot of Americans tell – seeing The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show and being really impressed and saying, ‘OK, that’s what I want to do with my life.’”
He continued, “[Springsteen] said he came down for breakfast the next day, and he’s got his hair combed forward, in a fringe, inspired by what we were doing. It’s the same story I heard from Tom Petty – same, you know, fringe-forward. And David Letterman. Loads of people have been affected in that way, and that’s lovely that you can have that effect on people."
Comedy Icons Carol Burnett, 93, and Vicki Lawrence, 77, Reunite in Sweet Selfie
Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence are back together again!
Burnett, 93, broke boundaries and created endless belly laughs with her timeless comedy series The Carol Burnett Show, which ran from 1967 to 1978 on CBS. Still active onscreen, she recently returned for season 2 of the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale. Lawrence, 77, also had a key role on The Carol Burnett Show, which launched the character of Mama. (Mama, of course, eventually got her own spinoff, Mama's Family.)
The dynamic duo reunited for a sweet dinner and selfie, and clearly had plenty of fun together. While it's been several decades since they first shared the stage, they're still comedy titans.
"Special night. Dinner with Carol. Thank you Brian for a beautiful meal. Lotsa laughs and lotsa memories. I love her so…🥰," Lawrence captioned the photo, which showed her smiling next to Burnett.
View this post on Instagram Burnett Wouldn’t Be Interested In Hosting Saturday Night Live AnymoreRecently, Burnett opened up in a profile in the New Yorker about why Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels has never asked her to host the iconic program.
“I don’t know what I did to upset that man,” Burnett told the publication. “Do you think it’s misogynistic?” she asked her interviewer.
The piece noted that Michaels declined to comment in response.
The piece continued, explaining that Burnett is an icon to many of the stars who have come to prominence on SNL. When Burnett presented Amy Poehler with a lifetime achievement award at Variety’s Power of Women event last year, Poehler made it clear how grateful she is to Burnett for forging a path before her.
“I wanted to thank my mother, the mother,” Poehler said, adding, “ ‘S.N.L.’ owes everything to you.”
The closest Burnett came to hosting was making a brief appearance in a 1985 segment when host Harry Anderson shouted her out, the piece notes.
While Burnett openly questioned what she did to upset Michaels, she made it clear she wouldn’t be interested in hosting SNL anytime soon. Back in 2019, she confirmed that the window had closed.
“No, I don’t think I would. Maybe like 20 years ago or whatever,” she told Vulture. “But that ship has sailed.”

Trump Has Only One Card To Play When It Comes To Slashing Gas Prices— Which Means They’re About To Go Even Higher
Americans are feeling the squeeze at the pump as gas prices near all-time highs. While economists and strategists all propose short-term gimmicks to lower prices, there’s really only one option.
The Strait of HormuzIf you’d have asked most Americans this time last year where the Strait of Hormuz was located, the majority would’ve likely not known the answer. Now, everyone knows, at the very least, that it’s controlled by Iran, bordering the Middle Eastern country to its south.
This small body of water, stretching only 24 miles at its narrowest point, connects the oil-rich nations of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Indian Ocean. Since Iran is the controlling country, the other nations are currently under a blockade and not able to get their product through.

The State of Crude OilThat’s why gas prices have surged up over $100 a barrel at the time of publication, with some strategists projecting prices will go over $130 a barrel in the next quarter, CNN reports in a recent article. Even if the Strait opened today, there’s too much of a backlog to bring prices down immediately.

But the U.S. does have its own crude oil supply. While some strategists have suggested banning exports of American oil, that strategy would likely backfire. It could trigger a chain reaction that forces refineries to restrict oil production, crushing Texas oil companies and driving crude oil prices worldwide higher.
Production for American oil has not rapidly increased under the Trump Administration. While still at a record high, U.S. drilling and oil production have remained consistent rather than shown additional growth.
A Gas Tax HolidayTrump endorsed suspending the 18.4-cent-per-gallon federal gas tax, but even that won’t provide significant relief to consumers. Analysts found that filling a 15-gallon gas tank once a week would save only $35 in total over the entire 122-day Summer season if the tax were suspended.
It would also cost the Highway Trust Fund $11.5 billion in lost revenue that could be passed on to consumers, negating any meager savings. The suspension could also boost gasoline demand even while there’s a shortage.
It seems the only real solution to the fuel crisis is to get the Strait of Hormuz open again, but with U.S.-Iran relations still floundering, it’s unlikely we’ll see that happen soon. While we wait to see what will happen, Americans will continue to feel pain at the pump.

1975 Country Crossover, That Inspired a Hollywood Film, Became a No. 1 Road Trip Anthem
A select few tracks were able to reach outstanding popularity, which led them to top the charts in more than one genre, making them a crossover hit. In 1975, the country novelty song was performed by C.W. McCall dominated the radio airwaves, became a road trip staple, inspired a film, and became a No.1 hit.
The hit track "Convoy" is ranked on Rolling Stone's list of the Best Road Trip Songs of All Time, with it landing at No. 43. Upon its release in November of that year, it went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 charts for one week and the US Hot Country Songs chart for six weeks. It also topped the Canadian, Australian, and Cash Box charts.
Unlike other popular hits of the era, its backstory and development make the song that much more interesting. "Convoy" is sung by a fictional musician named McCall, better known by his real name, William Dale Fries Jr., who was an advertising executive. The character was created by Fries for Old Home Bread Company for their ads, with Fries being the voice behind the narrations.
Fries would collaborate with Mannheim Steamroller founder Chip Davis on the track, with its lyrics aren't 100% sung. Instead, Fries talks and narrates through a CB radio, citizen’s band radio, as a truck driver whose handle is The Rubber Duck. Using CB slang, the track consists of three conversations between a group of truckers during a rough time in the industry. It would later be known as a protest song for speed regulations being set at the time.

'Convoy' Inspired a 1978 film starring Kris KristoffersonThe popularity of "Convoy" led to the creation of a road action film of the same name, directed by Sam Peckinpah and with a screenplay by Bill L. Norton. It starred Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, Ernest Borgnine, Burt Young, Madge Sinclair, and Franklyn Ajaye in leading roles.
Convoy focused on a group of truck drivers being extorted by an Arizona sheriff. When one of them incites a brawl, they all try to cross state lines into New Mexico while being chased by the police. They also plan to rescue a fellow ally in Texas who was a victim of police brutality. The film received mixed reviews from critics, having made $45 million at the box office, and McCall rerecorded the track to fit the film's storyline.
"Convoy" regained popularity in 2022 during the Freedom Convoy protests in Canada. The protests were against COVID-19 regulations for cross-border truck drivers. According to Taste of Country, Fries called in to the Drew & Mike radio morning show before his death to praise the use of his song "only because his biggest hit [was] getting a second life."
Nicole Richie and Her Daughter Kate, 18, Are the Ultimate Red Carpet Duo
Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's daughter, Kate Madden, hit the red carpet with her stylish mom.
Kate, 18, who is the daughter of the reality star and the Good Charlotte singer, made her first appearance in two years on the red carpet at the Stop! That! Train! world premiere at Harmony Gold on May 18 in Los Angeles, California. Sporting pin-straight hair just like her mom, Kate went raven-haired for the occasion, pairing her dark locks with a strapless leather dress and black boots. Richie went for polka dots and a matching head scarf alongside her daughter.

Why Did Kate Change Her Name? View this post on InstagramBack in January, it was revealed when Richie tagged her daughter in a post celebrating her 18th birthday that she doesn't go by the name she was given at birth, Harlow Winter Kate. Instead, she chose to go by Kate, her middle name.
"Yeah, she goes by her middle name," Richie told PEOPLE. "She has her whole life."
Madden said on Bunnie Xo's Dumb Blonde podcast this past March that "she's been going by her middle name since she was in like, first grade."
"She chose it," he said. "She went to school, one day she came home, or we went to the open house night or whatever, and the teacher's like, 'Kate's doing great. She's so nice.'"
What Has Richie Said About Raising Teenagers?Since Richie knows a thing or two about being a teen, she expressed in the past that she wouldn't hesitate to be honest with her kids.
"I just so clearly remember what it's like to be a teenager. It feels like it happened yesterday for me. And they know everything I did," she expressed to Glamour. "I knew before I had them that I was going to have to be transparent with them about who I was. And I've actually found freedom in that."
