The ‘Healthy’ Afternoon Snack That’s Causing Your 3 PM Crash, According to Dietitians

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 1:25pm

When the dreaded 3 p.m. crash hits, you may make a beeline to a local coffee shop or your office’s Keurig. However, registered dietitians share that grabbing something to eat before you start slogging can ward off the whole slump to begin with. In fact, snacks are a secret, underrated weapon for keeping energy up throughout the day, even though they can get a bad rap for being “fattening” and “extra calories.”

“The stomach processes food every three to four hours,” says John Emmanuel Delos Reyes, RD, senior registered dietitian at Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital. “Snacking between meals can help stabilize our energy levels when work or life events force us to stay engaged longer than three to four hours, especially when we don’t have time to have meals.”

Indeed, another registered dietitian, Amanda Sauceda, RD, MS, shares that the afternoon offers a unique opportunity to get your body up to speed so that your energy follows for the remainder of the day. Overlooking a snack may actually contribute to the 3 p.m. crash.

“Afternoons are when things can catch up to you, and that skipped breakfast and your barely-there lunch will make itself known,” Sauceda says. “Your energy will drop because you haven’t had enough food to fuel the rest of your day.”

Still, what you reach for matters. Some snacks labeled “healthy” may actually be energy vampires.

“Ideal snacks are whole-food based, minimally processed and contain macro diversity providing protein, healthy fats and fiber-containing carbohydrates,” explains Eleana Kaidanian, RD, CDN, CPT-WFS, a registered dietitian and owner of Long Island Nutritionist.

One such food offers none (or very little) of the above. Below, dietitians reveal the “healthy” afternoon snack that might be causing your afternoon crash and what to eat instead.

The ‘Healthy’ Afternoon Snack That’s Causing Your 3 PM Crash, RDs Say

As convenient as they are, registered dietitians warn against snacking on granola bars in the afternoon, saying the nutrient profile can contribute to a dip in energy. “Most granola bars lack fiber and protein, which stabilize blood sugars,” says Julia Zumpano, RD, a Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian. “Instead, they contain large amounts of carbs and sugars.”

To be clear, carbohydrates are not the devil, nor are all of them energy vampires. It’s quite the opposite, actually. Zumpano points out that carbohydrates are our body’s No. 1 source of energy. “They break down into glucose—blood sugar—providing fuel for our brain, muscle and nerves,” she says.

The issue is that granola bars, especially the ones at convenience stores and in vending machines, get most of their carb count from added sugar. “Sugar highs” do not provide the sustained energy you need to avoid a mid-afternoon slog.

“Added sugars are simple sugars, meaning that your body easily absorbs them, leading to a huge spike in your blood sugars,” Reyes tells Parade. “As a result of this immediate spike, your body will react by releasing insulin that will crash your blood sugars.”

Granola bars also don’t usually have much fiber or protein, which can speed up the blood sugar roller coaster.

“If your granola bar is lacking fiber, then your granola bar is more simple carbs, which your body will burn through quickly,” Sauceda explains. “Additionally, you’d ideally want some protein in your snack to balance out the carbs. Protein slows down the absorption of carbs, which means a better blood sugar response, and the protein will help keep you full.”

Still, it’s been ingrained in many of us that granola bars are “healthy.”

“This is one of those health claims that were promoted by the commercial food industry back in the day and stuck…possibly because they are usually made of oats,” Kaidanian says. “While whole grain oats provide nutrients, their health benefits are shadowed by the overuse of added sugars, oils, preservatives and processing.”

How Much Fiber, Protein and Added Sugar Is in an Ideal Afternoon Snack?

Granola bars are usually low in fiber and protein but high in added sugar. Kaidanian says snacks with the opposite nutrient profile—ones that have protein and fiber but lack added sugar—will stabilize your energy better. How much or how little of each ingredient you need depends on your overall diet, but she suggests aiming for 5 grams of fiber per snack and says it might be tough to achieve.

“The reality is that fiber-containing foods don’t have a ton of fiber,” Kaidanian tells Parade. “The trick is to add fiber to your meals and snacks throughout the day to provide a total that meets your daily requirement. If you are having two to three snacks a day, that is an additional 10 to 15 grams of fiber per day.”

Kaidanian adds that a snack with eight to 10 grams of protein will help you meet your daily protein needs if you’re also consuming 20 to 30 grams at meals. How much added sugar should a snack have? “Aim for zero grams of added sugar or try to keep it to the bare minimum where possible,” she says.

RD-Backed Afternoon Snacks That Will Give You More Energy

Granola bars aren’t entirely off the table, but they’re not going to give you the energy you want to beat the afternoon slump. Here, registered dietitians share snack ideas that’ll help you maintain a stable energy level and plow through your to-dos.

  • Apples/bananas with peanut butter. Delos Reyes says apples and bananas provide carbohydrates and fiber, while peanut butter adds proteins, healthy fats and more fiber.
  • Two hard-boiled eggs and one small apple. Kaidanian loves that this afternoon snack is easy to prepare, portable and doesn’t have added sugar. The eggs have protein, while the apple gives you fiber.
  • 3/4 cup Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup berries, 1/4 cup chopped almonds and 1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds. Besides being easy and convenient to make, Zumpano loves that this option “tastes great and provides a perfect balance of carb/pro/fat to stabilize blood sugars.”
  • Energy bites. There are many energy bite recipes out there, but Sauceda uses nut butter, oats and dried fruit in hers. Many have chia seeds for plant-based omega-3s. “Energy bites…will have protein, healthy fats and fiber, making it a pretty well-rounded snack that’s easy to grab-and-go and also easily fits in during meal preps for the week,” she raves.

Red Bull Caves to Demand, Permanently Brings Back Fan-Favorite Flavor

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 1:22pm

If you were one of the people who took to social media to beg Red Bull to bring back one of its popular seasonal flavors, your prayers may have just been answered. The popular energy drink company announced today that not only has the fan-favorite Fuji Apple & Ginger flavor returned to the United States, but it’s here to stay.

Formerly known as the Red Bull Winter Edition Fuji Apple & Ginger, the beverage, which tastes like Fuji apples and warm, spicy ginger, is available now at retailers nationwide in 8.4-fluid-ounce and 12-fluid-ounce individual cans, as well as in four-packs of the 12-fluid-ounce cans.

When it debuted as the Winter 2025 flavor, fans were overjoyed with the offering, praising the flavor and taking to social media to ask for it to stick around past its seasonal launch window, calling it the “best ever.” But, like most Red Bull seasonal flavors, it was ushered back into the vault, becoming a holy grail energy drink for devoted consumers.

Then, in March, Red Bull’s UK counterpart announced on Instagram that “Red Bull Apple Edition is here to stay,” immediately prompting an outcry from American fans who were upset and jealous that it was only coming back across the pond. They flooded the comments asking for it to also return to the United States, and it seems like Red Bull listened.

Over on the Red Bull subreddit (yes, these are very devoted fans), commenters celebrated the big announcement, writing how happy they are that the flavor is back, and sharing, “this one really grew on me, and is one of my top five US editions.” While there were some naysayers wishing that the brand brought back other flavors instead, the response has been mostly positive. However, some fans did express disappointment that, as of now, the returning Red Bull flavor is only available in a regular version and not in a sugar-free variety.

'70s Rock Band Announces Surprise Update Amid 'Fifty Something' Tour

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 1:18pm

If you were bummed that Rush wasn’t swinging through your city on their surprise reunion tour, it might be time to double-check the schedule. On Aug. 31, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers tacked four more stops onto the North American leg of their Fifty Something Tour.

“When we initially booked this tour we didn’t know how well we would hold up to the rigours of the road – so we played it safe with lots of days off to recover,” Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson said in a statement. “But life is nothing if not surprising and we’re doing fine and having a blast – so why not try to hit a few more of the cities that have always treated us so well.”

View this post on Instagram

The new dates send the rock band to Houston’s Toyota Center on October 1, St. Louis’ Enterprise Center on October 21, Cincinnati’s Heritage Bank Center on October 23, and Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena on November 15. Unless more shows get added, those will be the only Rush stops in Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Ohio this run. Texas, meanwhile, is now up to seven Rush shows total between Fort Worth, San Antonio, and the new Houston date. Fans can check the full tour schedule to see if Rush is headed their way.

Fifty Something marks Rush’s first tour since 2015’s R40 Live outing, which the band billed as a farewell at the time. Drummer Neil Peart died in 2020 after a three-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer, and Anika Nilles has stepped in behind the kit for this run.

When Lee and Lifeson first announced the tour, they said that after everything that’s happened since their last show, they realized they simply missed playing together, and that it felt like the right moment to celebrate 50-plus years of Rush.

Tickets and VIP packages for the four new dates go on sale Friday, September 4 at 10 a.m. CT. It’s a fitting expansion for a tour that keeps outgrowing its own schedule — the original run of shows sold out almost instantly, triggering several rounds of additions since it was first announced.

Fifty Something has become a much bigger undertaking than anyone, including Lee and Lifeson, expected.

Popular Radish Mix Recalled Due to Bacteria Causing Nausea and Bloody Diarrhea

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 1:14pm

Check your refrigerator! A Radish mix is being recalled due to a risk of contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) or Salmonella bacteria.

Everything Sprouts, LLC, announced they are voluntary recalling certain lots of its Robust Radish Sprout Mix on Aug 28. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the recall on Aug. 29.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are strains of bacteria that harm your cells, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It most often causes diarrhea (often watery and sometimes bloody), stomach pains, cramps, loss of appetite, and low fever.

Symptoms normally appear within three to five days after consuming contaminated food or beverages. It can cause serious and even life-threatening infections in young children, adults over 65 years old, and those with weakened immune systems.

Salmonella is a bacterial disease that impacts the intestinal tract, according to the Mayo Clinic. Humans are typically infected after ingesting contaminated water or food. Common symptoms include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, headache, chills, and abdominal pain.

The Minneapolis-based company distributed the product between August 13, 2026, and August 26, 2026. It was sent to both wholesale distributors and grocery stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Robust Radish Sprout Mix was packaged in 5-ounce cups, barcode 087906000075, lots 223, 226, 230, and 233.

Everything Sprouts recently recalled its Alfalfa Sprouts, Crunchy Protein Sprout Mix, and Zesty Garlic Mix. This makes Robust Radish Sprout Mix the fourth one this month.

In the FDA’s announcement, it included the statement, “We continue to work closely with public health officials to investigate the source of this potential issue and will provide updates as they become available.”

Adding: “Retailers and distributors who believe they have received affected lots of Alfalfa Sprouts should immediately stop selling and distributing the Alfalfa Sprouts in inventory and dispose of them according to local protocols. Additionally, they should carefully clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that the product may have touched. Customers with questions regarding this recall can contact Everything Sprouts at everythingsproutsmn@gmail.com.”

Federal and state agencies have not received any reports of illness related to Robust Radish Sprouts Mix.

1967 No. 2 Song, Co-Written by Isaac Hayes, Is Still a Powerful Hit 59 Years Later

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 1:14pm

Songwriting partners Isaac Hayes and David Porter famously penned the Sam & Dave hit, “Soul Man,” released in 1967. The track secured the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1967, two months after its debut.

Hayes, who died in 2008 at the age of 65, shared insight into creating the tune for Sam Moore and Dave Prater‘s group in a 1995 BBC Radio Merseyside interview.

“During the 60s, there was a lot of civil unrest in America. They had a huge riot in Detroit. I was watching it on TV and the commentator said, ‘If a business has the word ‘Soul’ on the building, the demonstrators will pass it and not burn it.’ It was like Passover, you know. If you have the bloodied lamb on the door, the first born won’t die,” said Hayes during the interview.

Hayes said that he soon approached Porter, now 84, about wanting to make the song.

“I told David that we should work on it and we came up with ‘Soul Man,'” said Hayes.

In a separate interview, Hayes said that “a lot of the songs” that he and Porter wrote during the 1960s, “had a lot to do with an awareness of the desired equality and justice from a country that had been so, so suppressive and so racist to the African American citizens.”

Isaac Hayes Discussed Being the Co-Songwriter Behind Sam & Dave Songs

Hayes and Porter were also behind other Sam & Dave songs, including “Hold On, I’m Comin'” (1966) and “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby” (1967). During the 1995 interview with BBC Radio Merseyside, Hayes shared how he and Porter would approach showing Moore, who died in 2025 at the age of 89, and Prater, who died in 1988 at the age of 50, the songs they had written.

“We did the songs live for them. They would come in the day before the session and we would go through the songs. They’d sometimes sit with us all night long. I would be at the piano and David would be writing and we would often write in their presence. We had a good feel for what they could do and by the time they got into the studio, they knew pretty much what the songs were about,” said Hayes in the 1995 interview. “You have to remember that we only had one track a lot of the time. If anyone screwed up, everybody had to start all over again, from the top. We got a groove sometimes that felt like the roof was coming off.”

1972 Hit by Seals and Crofts Became One of the 'Greatest Soft Rock Songs' of All Time

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 1:00pm

Seals and Crofts, the music duo behind the 1972 hit song “Summer Breeze,” created one of the most beloved soft rock songs of all time, more than five decades after its release.

The rock duo of Jim Seals and Dash Crofts created the timeless classic that still resonates with generations of listeners and even earned its place in Amazon Music’s curated playlist.

The streaming giant released a list of the 100 Greatest Soft Rock Songs that highlights not only melodic and easy-listening music but also songs that evoke emotions and connect with listeners.

Based on the selected playlist, Seals and Crofts’ song ranked at No. 85, with Toto’s “Africa,” The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” and Eurythmics, Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart’s “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” securing the top three spots.

Featured as the lead single of their fourth studio album, also titled Summer Breeze, the song is more than just a celebration of a beautiful summer day. It carries a deeper spiritual meaning rooted in the duo’s Bahá’í faith, as cited by Songfacts.

“‘Summer Breeze’ was a very simple song about a man coming home from work and hearing the dog barking and things like that, and to a lot of people the song’s about looking for security,” Seals shared in a 1975 interview with Melody Maker. “Our meaning goes further than that, for a prison can be the prison of self and a person can become insecure and paranoid if he doesn’t have a direction in his personal life.”

Apart from its meaningful lyrics, the steady and laid-back rhythm accompanied by the iconic intro hook captivated listeners, making it the band’s breakthrough song.

At that time, “Summer Breeze” peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it their first-ever entry on the chart.

In addition, the song also inspired notable covers from fellow musicians.

Among the famous ones were The Isley Brothers, who gave the track their signature soul and funk vibe, as well as Type O Negative, who released their gothic metal revival of the song in 1993.

Beyond its iconic covers, Seals and Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” was recognized by Rolling Stone in 2022 as one of the Best Summer Songs of All Time, ranking at No. 20.

The song’s enduring appeal across generations is a testament to just how timeless the track is.

1974 Soft Rock Song, Written in a California Hotel Room, Became a Generational Hit

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 12:55pm

Long before Jimmy Buffett built an escapist musical world filled with beaches, boats, and frozen drinks, his first major hit came from a far lonelier place.

Buffett wrote “Come Monday” while staying in a hotel room in California, separated from his future wife, Jane Slagsvol, and struggling emotionally during a difficult stretch on the road. Released in 1974, the tender ballad became his breakthrough on the pop charts and offered an early glimpse of the storytelling that would define his career.

At the time, Buffett was touring as an opening act for Jim Croce.

“I was on a quest,” Buffet told Rolling Stone in 2020. “When you start out, you have to commit to this. It’s not a part-time job. In those days, the ratio of success was minuscule. There’s a lot of wreckage on the road to success.”

That road included plenty of long days and bleak, lonely nights.

“I was deathly depressed in a Howard Johnson’s under Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, living there and playin gin San Anselmo,” Buffett recalled during appearance on Late Night. “It was awful.”

Alone in his hotel room, he poured that loneliness into a song about counting down the days until he could reunite with the person he loved. The result was markedly different from the party-ready songs that would later become synonymous with Buffett.

“Come Monday” unfolds as a straightforward declaration of longing, with Buffett singing about enduring the weekend apart and looking forward to Monday, when the separation would finally end. The song appeared on his 1974 album Living and Dying in ¾ Time.

Its success changed the direction of his career.

Released as a single, “Come Monday” climbed to No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Buffett his first Top 40 hit. It also reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Easy Listening chart, demonstrating that his laid-back songwriting could reach an audience well beyond the clubs and college campuses where he had been building his following.

“It hit, I paid the rent, got my dog out of the pound,” Buffett said.

Slagsvol also became part of the song’s history.

She appeared alongside Buffett in the famously low-budget promotional video for “Come Monday,” and the couple married in 1977. Their relationship endured for decades, adding another layer to a song originally written out of the pain of being apart.

Buffett would eventually become far more closely identified with “Margaritaville,” which reached the Top 10 in 1977 and helped turn his tropical outlook into a cultural phenomenon. But “Come Monday” got there first.

Buffett died in 2023 at the age of 76. When asked how he would like to be remembered, Buffett told Rolling Stone, “I’d say ‘He had a good time and made a lot of people happy’ would be good.  Yeah, that’d be good.”

More than 50 years after Buffett sat alone in that California hotel room, the song remains one of his most affecting recordings, a deeply personal moment of homesickness and longing that unexpectedly became his first major hit.

1964 Hit, Written in 10 Minutes in a Coffee Shop, Ranked Among the 'Greatest Bob Dylan Covers' of All Time

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 12:52pm

Bob Dylan is recognized as the King of Folk Music, penning over 700 songs over the course of his career. With such a massive catalog, it’s no surprise that his work has been covered by countless artists across genres—from soul and rock to pop and R&B. One cover in particular, Sam Cooke‘s 1964 rendition of “Blowin’ in the Wind,” is considered one of the greatest Bob Dylan covers of all time on an expansive list of 80 titles.

The original track—reportedly written by Dylan in just 10 minutes at a café in Greenwich Village, NYC, in April 1962—was based on the melody of an old slave spiritual song called “No More Auction Block,” a protest song synonymous with the civil rights movement, now widely recognized as “We Shall Overcome.”

The premise behind the song greatly inspired Cooke, who released his version on his 1964 live album, Sam Cooke at the Copa, putting a soulful spin on the folk tune.

Meanwhile, the poignant lyrics are a timeless display of a man wondering when enough is enough. “Tell me, how many years can people exist / Before they are allowed to be free / How many times can a man turn his head / Pretending that he just doesn’t see / Oh, the answer, my friend, blowing in the wind / The answer, blowing in the wind,” the track expresses, per Genius.

Cooke’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” was ranked at No. 7 on Rolling Stone‘s roundup of the greatest Bob Dylan covers of all time. “Dylan’s frequently covered protest folk-song changed Cooke’s outlook on music—the soul great’s only frustration was that he wished that a Black artist had written it. Cooke introduced ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ to his live set upon hearing it, and eventually it spurred him to write his towering civil rights classic ‘A Change Is Gonna Come,'” the famed music publication wrote.

Other tracks from over the decades that made the list are Nina Simone‘s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” (1969), The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” (1965), Elvis Presley’s “Tomorrow Is a Long Time” (1966), Guns N’ Roses’ “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” (1991), and The Jimi Hendrix Experience‘s “All Along the Watchtower” (1968) in the top spot as the No. 1 greatest Bob Dylan cover of all time. (Dylan himself reportedly said to Hendrix, “I don’t know if anyone has done my songs better,” according to the outlet).

1974 Hit Ranked Second-Greatest Dolly Parton Song of All Time

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 12:43pm

Dolly Parton’s 1974 hit “I Will Always Love You” has been ranked among her greatest songs of all time, placing the country classic among the singer-songwriter’s most important recordings.

The ranking comes as fans continue to remember Parton and her decades-long career. Collider placed “I Will Always Love You” at No. 2 on its list of the 10 greatest Dolly Parton songs, pointing to the song’s emotional story, Parton’s original recording and the enormous success that followed Whitney Houston’s 1992 version.

The song was written by Parton as she prepared to leave The Porter Wagoner Show and begin a solo career. Rather than turning the end of her professional relationship with Porter Wagoner into an angry goodbye, Parton wrote a song about leaving while still expressing love and good wishes.

That personal story helped make “I Will Always Love You” more than just another country hit. It became one of Parton’s best-known songs and later reached audiences around the world through Houston’s version for the 1992 film The Bodyguard.

Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You” in 1973 for Wagoner, her business partner and mentor. She had joined The Porter Wagoner Show in 1967 and remained with the program for seven years.

The song became Parton’s way of telling Wagoner that she wanted to move forward with her own career.

Per People, Parton’s recollection in Ken Burns’ 2019 documentary Country Music shared how she decided to follow the advice she often gave herself as a songwriter: “Do what you do best, just write a song.”

She brought the song to Wagoner and performed it for him. Parton recalled that Wagoner cried as she sang. He reportedly told her it was the best thing she had written and agreed that she could leave if he could produce the record.

Wagoner did produce the recording, and the song became part of Parton’s next chapter as a solo artist.

“I Will Always Love You” was released as a single on March 1974. It was the second single from Parton’s album Jolene. The original recording reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and became one of the best-selling singles of 1974.

Parton won the Female Vocalist of the Year award at the 1975 CMA Awards.

The song’s success did not end with the original release. Parton recorded the song again in 1982 for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. That version also reached No. 1 on the country chart, giving Parton the rare achievement of taking the same song to the top spot twice.

While “I Will Always Love You” was already a major country song, Whitney Houston gave it a new life in 1992.

Houston recorded a pop-ballad version for The Bodyguard, her film debut opposite Kevin Costner. Her recording became a massive international success and spent a record 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time.

Houston’s version also won two Grammys in 1994: Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Parton presented Houston with the latter award.

The success of Houston’s recording also brought major financial returns to Parton. Parton made $10 million in royalties during the 1990s from Houston’s version. She later used the money to purchase an office complex in a Black community in Nashville, according to Forbes.

Parton described the property as “the house that Whitney built.”

Before Houston recorded the song, Parton offered “I Will Always Love You” to Patti LaBelle. Elvis Presley also wanted to record the song after Parton’s 1974 version became a country hit. However, Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, wanted half of Parton’s publishing rights as part of the arrangement.

Parton refused to give up the publishing rights.

Parton also continued to record the song herself. In 1995, she released a duet version with Vince Gill. The recording reached No. 15 on the U.S. Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and was later performed by the pair at the CMA Awards.

The song has also been recorded by many other artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, LeAnn Rimes, Christina Grimmie and Sarah Washington. Kristin Chenoweth later recorded it as a duet with Parton in 2019.

The song’s reach continued long after its original release. In 2016, Parton performed it as part of the “Forever Country” medley celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Country Music Association Awards. The medley reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

In 2023, Billboard placed it at No. 60 on its list of the 500 Best Pop Songs of All Time.

Following Parton’s death on Aug. 25, 2026, artists have continued to honor her music. John Mayer recently paid tribute to Parton with an instrumental rendition of “I Will Always Love You” during his SiriusXM concert at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York.

1980s 'European Vacation' Star, 58, Has Fans Doing a Double Take at North Carolina Expo

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 12:36pm

Former ’80s star Jason Lively was hard to miss at a recent fan event.

The 58-year-old star of National Lampoon’s European Vacation was in attendance for the 2026 Mad Monster Expo in North Carolina, occurring between August 21–23. A fan had captured candid moments of the actor while onsite.

In a video posted on TikTok, Lively could be seen walking past a group of fans who did a double take upon noticing him. He was also shown interacting with various people at the three-day convention.

Lively was just 17 years old when National Lampoon’s European Vacation hit the big screen in July 1985. He played Russell “Rusty” Griswold, replacing Brat Pack star Anthony Michael Hall as chose to instead co-lead legendary director John Hughes‘ 1985 comedy Weird Science.

Lively starred alongside Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, and fellow new addition Dana Hill.

In a 2022 interview with MLive.com, Lively opened up about his positive experience getting to travel the world as a 16-year-old to film the movie. The Night of the Creeps actor also revealed what it was like getting to work closely with Chase, now 82, at the height of the comedic star’s career.

“Doing it with Chevy at that time when he was just the funniest man on the planet, it’s real easy to get spoiled,” Lively shared. “If I could travel like that all of the time, I certainly would. It’s not bad rolling with the big Warner Bros. high dollar film and being a kid. It was a magnificent experience. I got to do things that hardly anyone gets to do, no matter how old.”

Additionally, Lively said the studio “didn’t let me keep anything.”

“Chevy, anything he got, he stole. He kept his pig costume,” he added. “I wanted the white leather. I’d be rolling that right now (laughing). I did an Old Navy commercial years back. All of us did. They recreated the beret. I definitely snagged that one. I was older and wiser.”

Lively, who is the brother of actress Robyn Lively and half-brother of actress Blake Lively, was one of the several ’80s stars in attendance at the 2026 Mad Monster Expo over the weekend. Hall, 58, A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Heather Langenkamp and fellow Night of the Creeps star Jill Whitlow were also present.

Jenna Dewan Celebrates 20 Years of 'Step Up' Amid 'DWTS' Reports

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 12:29pm

While reports swirl that Dancing with the Stars could be in Jenna Dewan’s future, she took a look back Monday at the role that put her dancing skills on the map.

“Can’t believe it’s been 20 years since Step Up was released,” she captioned an Instagram gallery filled with images from the iconic film. “The movie that changed my life forever. The way you guys love this movie all these years later is beyond.”

View this post on Instagram

In the beloved 2006 film, Dewan played main character Nora Clark, who was a dance student at a renowned arts school. When her dance partner was no longer able to perform for an important end-of-year routine, Tyler Gage, played by Channing Tatum, steps in and incorporates his hip-hop moves into her ballet number. Along the way, the two form a romantic connection.

Off screen Dewan and Tatum also had a relationship. The two dated on the heels of the movie’s release and were married from 2009-2018. They welcomed daughter Everly in 2013.

The dancer, however, had quite the resume before taking on what would be considered her breakout role. Before the film and roles in several other movies, she was a touring backup dancer, most notably with Janet Jackson. She also toured with Justin Timberlake and danced in music videos for Missy Elliot and Mandy Moore in the early 2000s.

Fast forward to 2026 though, and Dewan is rumored to be joining Dancing with the Stars. And while the full cast announcement will be released on Sept. 2, multiple outlets have reported that the Step Up icon, who now stars on The Rookie, will be taking on the ballroom.

Earlier this year when asked if she was interested in joining the show, she said, “I never say never because I love dancing so much and I miss it so much,” she said. “I just already know myself … it would be one of those really hard things to say no to.”

Along with Dewan, former Bachelor star Tyler Cameron is said to be joining as well.

As for the official DWTS Season 35 lineup, confirmed cast members include reality stars Ciara Miller and Maura Higgins, Savannah Bananas player Jackson Olson, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez.

Ella Langley Turns Doja Cat's Own Words Into A Perfect Clapback

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 12:17pm

Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone can try to correct those mistakes. And everyone can also use those mistakes for a little clapback humor, as Ella Langley showed.

The exchange started on the Aug. 23 episode of Sundae Conversation, when host Caleb Pressley asked Doja Cat if she considered herself a fan of Langley’s. It came off the back of an unrelated joke, and Doja, seemingly caught off guard, replied that she didn’t know what he was talking about. Pressley pressed further, asking directly if she liked Langley’s music. Doja repeated the name back to herself twice, as if trying to place it, and again said she had no idea.

View this post on Instagram

The response drew attention mostly because of timing. Langley’s single “Choosin’ Texas” had just tied the record for the second-longest run atop the Billboard Hot 100 among non-holiday songs, a chart feat matched by only a handful of releases in the chart’s history. Two days later, Doja addressed the clip during a livestream, explaining that her unfamiliarity wasn’t a slight against Langley personally but a reflection of how little she follows country music as a genre. She listened to “Choosin’ Texas” for the first time on stream and offered a mixed but respectful review, calling the track catchy and Langley’s voice pretty, even while admitting the song wasn’t for her.

Then Langley responded. On Aug. 27, she posted a carousel of tour photos and videos to Instagram with a caption that sent Doja’s own words back at her: “Ella Langley? What is that?” The post itself had nothing to do with the exchange. It was simply footage from her Dandelion Tour, dogs and makeup chairs included, but the caption did the work.

Both artists have plenty of receipts to back up their confidence. Doja Cat has three Grammy Awards and a string of pop and hip-hop hits, including “Say So” and “Paint the Town Red,” that have made her one of the most recognizable voices in music over the past five years. Langley, meanwhile, has spent 2026 rewriting country’s chart history: “Choosin’ Texas” tied for the second-longest run atop the Billboard Hot 100 among non-holiday songs, and she picked up seven ACM Awards this year alone. Neither artist needed the other’s approval to prove it.

Langley didn’t need a lengthy statement or a pointed comeback to make her point, she just borrowed the exact phrase that had gone viral days earlier and let her own chart numbers speak for the rest. Zing!

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Icon Lands New Medical Role After 22 Seasons as Meredith Grey

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 12:13pm

Even though Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for its 23rd season, the decades-long hit TV show’s biggest star is swapping white coats for another series.

Ellen Pompeo will play Amelia Winn, a former ER nurse who lost her hearing in a hit-and-run accident. The series follows Winn and her service dog as they become entangled in a mystery surrounding the death of one of her former co-workers.

While not actively in the medical field for the new show, who better to play a former ER nurse than one of TV’s most recognizable doctors?

Pompeo is expected to return for Grey’s Anatomy’s new season, meaning her days as Dr. Meredith Grey aren’t over just yet, but fans can see her put a new spin on a medical role in Not a Sound.

Hulu’s new series is based on Heather Gudenkauf’s 2017 novel of the same name, with Pompeo also attached as an executive producer on the project, lending her voice behind the scenes while portraying a character navigating a world without sound.

Fans may have to wait a while before seeing Pompeo step into the role, however. Not a Sound is still in development at Hulu, with no production timeline or premiere date announced just yet.

The award-winning actress has been selective about taking on roles outside of Grey’s Anatomy, having become synonymous with Meredith Grey over the past two decades, so the new project should give her fans something fresh to look forward to.

It also marks another major Hulu project for the actress. In 2025, Pompeo stepped outside the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial to star as Kristine Barnett in Good American Family for 8 episodes, her first major role outside of Grey’s since the medical drama premiered in the early 2000s.

Until Not a Sound hits living rooms, fans can expect to see Pompeo return to her most iconic role when Grey’s Anatomy premieres October 15 on ABC, though her appearances may be limited.

'The Big Bang Theory' Star Reveals the Plot of an Episode Fans Never Got to See

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 11:59am

Actor Brian Thomas Smith, who played one of Penny’s (Kaley Cuoco) love interests, Zack Johnson, in the hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory, shared that an episode involving his character and Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) ended up getting cut.

During an August 2026 interview on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, Smith, who joined the show’s cast during its season 3 finale, said that a script was written for a season 4 episode, wherein Zack tried to give Sheldon dating advice. However, Cuoco ended up breaking her leg after a horse riding accident two days before the episode was supposed to be taped.

“They’re like, ‘She can’t do the episode, so you’re not going to be able to do the episode.’ Because that was the whole episode. And I was given Sheldon advice on women in that episode. I vaguely remember it ’cause we only had like a few days of rehearsals on it, but they had to write me out. And I was like, ‘This is my luck.’ They just wrote me out,” said Smith.

He also said while he was disappointed that he didn’t get to film the episode, he wasn’t an overall fan of the plot.

“It wasn’t good. I think Zack was kind of mean still. He was, like, kind of more like a womanizer type of guy,” said Smith.

Kaley Cuoco Shared Details About Her Injury in a 2010 Interview

Cuoco discussed breaking her leg in a 2010 interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“I had a freak accident. It actually was the end of my lesson. I’d been jumping all day,” said Cuoco in the 2010 interview. “At the end of the lesson, my horse spooked, and I wasn’t really expecting it. But I fell off. And I was laughing and my trainer was laughing. It was very, very silly. So, I was actually getting up, and my horse was still kind of spooking. He was in the corner. He was trying to get away from me. He leaped over me and landed on my leg.”

Cuoco, who starred as Penny throughout the show’s entire 12-season run, which ended in 2019, also shared that her leg injury wasn’t written into The Big Bang Theory. Instead, her cast was hidden by having her bartend at Penny’s then-workplace, The Cheesecake Factory.

‘I Dream of Jeannie’ Icon Was Once Told She Wasn’t Beautiful Enough to Make It in Hollywood

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 11:56am

Barbara Eden has been an enduring star in Hollywood for more than seven decades, building a remarkable career that began in the 1950s and eventually made her a household name. But early on, the future I Dream of Jeannie star was brutally rejected by a casting director who told her she would never make it in show business—because he felt she wasn’t a traditional Hollywood beauty.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in an interview published in August 2026, Eden, 95, revealed that when she was first trying to break into acting in the 1950s, a Warner Bros. casting agent shot her down.

“I went in, and the man was, ‘Okay,’ kind of abrupt,” Eden recalled. “And he said, ‘Look … you’re just not the type. You’re not. You’re not Hollywood type.”

The man then showed Eden a photo of his big-breasted daughter and told her, “‘This is what they want. This is a picture of my daughter. Big t—s.’”

“Lord, I was just shocked,” Eden shared, noting that she didn’t grow up in a home where such crude language was used. “He said, ‘You’re a pretty enough girl… but you’re not beautiful … You won’t make it. Go home and marry the boyfriend at home.’”

Eden didn’t let the casting director deter her, and months later she ran into him again. While she assumed she was doomed, he gave her a screentest, seemingly not remembering her from before.

Eden went on to play a pretty best friend on Father Knows Best, a bombshell on I Love Lucy, and other glamorous TV characters before becoming a beach bottle blonde on I Dream Of Jeannie for five seasons in the late 1960s.

In the 1957 I Love Lucy episode, Eden’s character, Diana Jordan, had all the men lining up to dance with her, leaving their wives jealous.

“It was about a dance at the country club, and none of the men wanted to dance, you know, all the wives were sitting there,” she once told the Television Academy Foundation. “And here I was in that dress.… I came to sit down, and someone asked me to dance and then they all stood up and wanted to ask me to dance.  It was one of those things, and of course I danced with Desi and that gave Lucy lots of fodder, you know, to make her faces and look upset,”

Still, when it came time to audition for I Dream of Jeannie, Eden didn’t think she fit the role.

“They had every tall brunette, winner of many beauty contests, they were testing,” Eden told People magazine in July. “I thought, ‘Oh, it’s not for me.’ The Middle Eastern girl, and that’s what they wanted. I’m a blonde, short blonde.“

Once her agent informed her she had the part, Eden was stunned.

“Do they know what I look like?” she asked.

1965 Fantasy Sitcom Lasted Just 5 Seasons but Became a TV Staple for Generations

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 11:54am

The ’60s were filled with fantasy sitcoms, from Bewitched to The Addams Family, but one has remained a TV staple for generations despite only being on air for a handful of years.

Yes, we are talking about I Dream of Jeannie, the TV series starring Barbara Eden as a 2,000-year-old genie who falls in love with astronaut Tony Nelson, played by Larry Hagman.

The show ran from September 18, 1965, to May 26, 1970, on NBC, but it went on to inspire countless TV shows and movies over the years, including Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

When casting the show, producer Sidney Sheldon was adamant that he did not want a blonde actress to avoid comparisons to another fantasy sitcom airing at the time — Bewitched — but Eden’s appeal was undeniable.

“They had every tall brunette, winner of many beauty contests, they were testing,” Eden told People in 2026. “I thought, ‘Oh, it’s not for me.’ The Middle Eastern girl, and that’s what they wanted.”

She continued, “I’m a blonde, short blonde. And then my agent sent me a script, and I read it. And then I went, ‘Oh, this seems familiar.’ And he said, ‘Barbara, how did you like it?'”

The rest is history.

Another fun fact about the show, which aired its first season in black-and-white, was that Eden was pregnant in Season 1, prompting the colorless episodes.

“I was pregnant. I was going to have a baby, and so they started fast, and I think they thought I was going to die or something. They didn’t want to invest the money in the color,” she explained to People.

View this post on Instagram

Eden recently celebrated her 95th birthday in August 2025, and fans of the sitcom flooded her social media account with fond memories of I Dream of Jeannie.

“You were a special part of my childhood as Jeannie,” one follower commented before another added, “Thank you for the many wonderful memories throughout the decades.”

A third chimed in, “Thank you for being a favorite memory of mine, thank you for the countless laughs.

Luckily, fans can still stream every episode of I Dream of Jeannie on Tubi.

1977 Rock Hit, Co-Written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie, Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 11:47am

Iggy Pop‘s song, “Lust for Life,” marked another collaboration with David Bowie that took 20 years to gain popularity, but still managed to become one of the rock genre’s greatest tracks.

After a period of drug addiction, Pop reunited with Bowie to work on his second solo album, Lust for Life. It was their second time working together since Bowie’s The Idiot album that released earlier that year. Pop often described his friendship with Bowie as, “this guy salvaged me from certain professional and maybe personal annihilation.”

They soon began working on “Lust for Life,” which was originally developed by Bowie on a ukulele while he was lying down. The song’s popular opening sound was actually inspired by a famous ’70s series starring Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul.

“Once a week the Armed Forces Network would play Starsky & Hutch and that was our little ritual. AFN would broadcast an ID when they came on the air, a representation of a radio tower, and it made a signal sound, ‘beep-beep-beep, beep-beep-ba-beep.’ And we went, ‘Aha we’ll take that!’ David grabbed his ukulele, worked out the chords, and away we went,” said Pop to Q magazine.

The track was released in 1977, but failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It instead landed at No. 3 on the Dutch Top 40 and No. 4 in the Netherlands. “Lust for Life” wouldn’t become a hit and re-enter the charts until decades later in 1996 when it was featured in the British film Trainspotting. It starred Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Macdonald, and was praised by critics as one of the best films of the 90s.

The film heavily used “Lust for Life” for its marketing and included it in its soundtrack. Its resurgence even led Pop’s then-label to issue a greatest hits compilation album.

“When I made Lust for Life, I really thought America was gonna rock to this motherfucker. And it took 20 fuckin’ years, which is a really long time to wait. I guess what happened is that there was this system that wasn’t gonna fuckin’ give me a break, and I outlived the system,” said Pop in a 1999 interview.

“The movies and advertisers have subverted the stranglehold of radio in America, and there are now other ways for people to hear music. All of a sudden—a few years ago when Trainspotting came out—I was walkin’ down the street and I’d heard Raw Power comin’ out of the bars.”

The Pop and Bowie collaboration is a music staple, ranked by Rolling Stone at No. 326 on their list of the “Greatest Songs of All Time.” They called the track a “kiss-off to drugged-out hedonism,” with “enormous kaboom and Pop’s sneering, free-associative lyrics.”

Paula Deen Shows Off Weight Loss in Rare Instagram Appearance—and Fans Are Taking Notice

Mon, 08/31/2026 - 11:43am

Paula Deen is looking more svelte than ever!

The former Food Network star, 79, who rose to superstardom cooking up hefty Southern meals on the popular cooking channel, has flown under the radar in the last year or two. But in a rare appearance alongside Bewitched child star Erin Murphy, the culinary queen showed off a slimmed-down appearance in a new photo. The photo revealed a significantly more svelte Deen, who was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes several years ago.

“A little magic in the kitchen with Paula Deen! 🥧 #southerncooking#pauladeen,” Murphy captioned the photo, which showed Deen sporting a bright smile on her face.

Closing Her Restaurants

Last summer, Deen abruptly closed two of her restaurants.

“Hey, y’all, my sons and I made the heartfelt decision that Thursday, July 31st, was the last day of service for The Lady & Sons and The Chicken Box,” Deen wrote in a statement on her Facebook and website. “Thank you for all the great memories and for your loyalty over the past 36 years.”

While it didn’t give a reason for the closures, several of Deen’s other restaurants remain open.

Her Tell-All Documentary

Deen faced a massive fallout after she was dropped by the Food Network in June 2013. In 2012, an employee at her brother’s restaurant had sued for racial discrimination and sexual harassment, alleging that Deen and her brother Bubba had discriminated against Black employees and made racist comments, The Hollywood Reporter wrote. However, the case was dismissed due to the fact that the judge said the plaintiff, who was white, had no standing. However, the following year, Deen admitted to using a racial slur in the workplace in a sworn deposition, the New York Times reported. That led to her firing from the Food Network, as well as several stores that sold Deen’s products canceling their partnerships with the star, who was once known as the “Queen of Southern Cuisine.”

This past fall, Deen debuted her new documentary, Canceled: The Paula Deen Story, at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, which features Deen’s sons and business partners Jamie and Bobby, “seeks to explain her views and why she feels she got a raw deal as she alleged that the plaintiff’s claims of racist behavior were invented,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote.

“I would have been fine had the whole story been told — had the real story been told,” Deen told The Reporter. “They took this woman [the plaintiff], who is a known liar, they took her word and ran with it, and no one ever investigated any further. I was not going to be happy until the world saw the truth.”
