Delaying Retirement Age Can Increase Your Social Security Benefits

Want to make more money after you retire? According to Evan H. Farr, Certified Elder Law Attorney and Retirement Planner with Farr Law Firm, P.C., you'll need to wait a bit before you start claiming your payments.

"Since Social Security is actuarially based, and there is an incentive to wait until as late as possible, you have a lot of power to time your claims," he says. "If you claim after full retirement age, but before 70, each year that you delay your claim will give you an additional 8 percent."

Farr says that's an overall increase of around 24 percent over two years. "Combine that with the fact that you'll typically be adding higher-earning years to the mix, and you could get close to that 30 percent number."

Of course, delaying when you collect Social Security isn't the same as delaying retirement, according to Farr. "If you have a well-funded nest egg, or access to other sources of income, you can transition out of your main job, and still delay receiving Social Security," he says, adding that this may mean funding your own retirement for those first few years. "What you gain is a bigger, inflation-indexed lifetime benefit."

Only Retire After 35 Years of Work

Because benefits are based on your highest 35 years of earnings, you'll want to go out on a high note when you finally retire, and ensure that you have enough working years under your belt to boost your yearly average.

"Social Security calculates your benefit off your highest 35 earning years," Christopher Walsh, Senior Financial Advisor and Regional Marketing Director at Capital Choice Financial Group, says. "If you only worked 30 years, you've got five zeros sitting in that calculation dragging your average down."

Putting another five years in on your job can help increase the amount of money you get paid, sometimes by as much as 30 percent.

Talk to a Professional About Your Retirement

According to Walsh, bringing in the big guns (as in, the pros) is another way to increase your benefits. "People ask me all the time if they really need help with this and my answer is yes," he says, adding that there are about 9,000 different combinations that couples can use when claiming their benefits.

"You get one shot at that election. Married couples especially have strategies most people never think about, like having the lower-earning spouse claim early while the higher earner keeps accumulating so the surviving spouse gets a bigger benefit down the road," he continues. "That kind of planning gets missed constantly."

While it's obvious that there are a few different things you can do to make the most of your earnings once you start collecting Social Security, it sounds like these three things are really the most impactful when planning for retirement.

However, there is some disappointing news. Despite originally being set to head to theaters over Thanksgiving weekend, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is now being delayed a few months. Yes, months!

Why Is ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ Delayed to 2027?

Netflix has made the decision to delay the release, and it comes down to getting a bigger theatrical focus. This is a good thing in the grander scheme of things, as a fantasy story of this magnitude deserves to be on the big screen for as long as possible.

The original plan was to release The Magician’s Nephew in theaters over Thanksgiving, and then release it on Netflix on Christmas Day. It wasn’t going to be in the theaters for that whole time, though, with a limited two-week run planned.

Now, the plan is to release it in theaters on February 12, 2027, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Netflix release won’t be until April 2, 2027, which means almost two months in theaters. It’ll get a 49-day exclusive run in theaters before heading to streaming, with the focus on both IMAX and smaller theaters to ensure more fans get to experience Gerwig’s vision.

‘The Magician’s Nephew’ Also Gets Less Competition

For those who worried about the movie going up against stiff competition over Thanksgiving weekend, you’ll be relieved to hear that the competition is smaller. Originally, it was going to go up against Sunrise on the Reaping, the latest Hunger Games prequel story. 

Now, it is set to go up against Sony’s The Nightingale Project and Paramount Pictures’ Korean Pop Project. Both of these are set to bring in a different type of viewer compared to two fantasy/dystopian book adaptations being released at the same time.

While this isn’t the first Netflix movie to get a theatrical release, it is the first to get a full release. The KPop Demon Hunters release doesn’t quite count, as that was after the movie hit Netflix.

Mike Dirnt, co-founder and bassist of the band Green Day, turned 54 on May 4th, 2026. The legendary musician has widely been credited by fans as being one of the most "influential bassists of their lives."

Dirnt (born Michael Ryan Pritchard) met lead guitarist and vocalistBillie Joel Armstrong at Carquinez Middle School when they were both 10 years old. The stage name "Dirnt" comes from the sound of plucking un-amplified strings of a bass guitar, a habit of the musicians' since his youth. The two bonded instantly and learned to play guitar together with influences like Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, and AC/DC. The duo formed their first band, Sweet Children, in 1986 before changing the name to Green Day in 1989. Green Day left for its first tour in June of 1990, the same day Dirnt graduated from high school.

Green Day was part of the late 1980s/early 1990s Bay Area punk scene that emerged from 924 Gilman Street, a popular club in Berkeley, California. The band's first records were released with the small indie label, Lookout!, before their major-label debut in 1994, Dookie, with Reprise Records. Dookie was a major commercial success, having sold over 20 million copies in the United States. Green Day has been credited with reignighting the love of punk music in the states and has sold over 75 million records in the band's 30+ year career.

On how the members seem to "never age," Armstrong recently commented, "I think trying to mentally keep yourself in a place where you still have excitement in your life. And you’re in always in awe of something, And you always have that thing about you that you’re dreaming the next dream, and never resting your laurels and not going through the motions. To me, that’s the fountain of youth. It’s not about the wrinkles on your face, or the fat you get or the grey hairs. It’s just your zest for life."

A major safety alert has been issued for popular Thermos containers following reports of serious injuries. The May 2026 recall involves millions of bottles and food jars that may create a dangerous pressure buildup during use, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In some cases, users were hurt when a stopper suddenly shot out while opening the container.

The issue has led to a large-scale recall, with safety officials warning consumers to stop using certain products immediately. The concern is not just a minor injury. Reports include severe eye trauma and even permanent vision loss in three cases. This has made the Thermos recall one of the most serious product safety actions of 2026 so far.

What Products Are Included in the 2026 Thermos Recall

The recall affects several Thermos Stainless King food jars and Sportsman bottles. These products were sold for years and may still be in homes today. The problem stems from a stopper design that lacks a pressure relief feature. If food or drinks sit for a long time, pressure can build up inside the container.

When the lid is opened, that pressure can suddenly release. The stopper may eject forcefully, causing injury.

Affected products include:

• Thermos 16-ounce Stainless King Food Jar (SK3000)
• Thermos 24-ounce Stainless King Food Jar (SK3020)
• Thermos 40-ounce Sportsman Food and Beverage Bottle (SK3010)

These items were sold in multiple colors and feature Thermos branding on the side. Model numbers are located on the bottom of each container.

Retailers where these products were sold include:

• Target
• Walmart
• Amazon
• Thermos official website
• Other major stores nationwide

Millions of units are involved in this recall. About 5.8 million food jars and 2.3 million bottles are part of the safety action.

What Consumers Should Do for Safety

Safety experts are urging consumers to stop using the recalled Thermos products immediately. This is important even if the container looks normal or has been used without problems in the past. The risk comes from pressure that may not be visible.

Thermos is offering a remedy for affected customers. People can receive a free replacement part or a new product, depending on the model they own. For some food jars, users will be asked to discard the stopper and provide proof. For bottles, a prepaid return process may be required.

Consumers should check the model number on the bottom of their container to confirm if it is included in the recall. If it matches SK3000, SK3020 or SK3010, it is part of the safety recall.

Beloved sitcom starJohn Goodman made a highly-anticipated return to Missouri.

The award-winning actor and TV icon is a Missouri State alum. A few days ago, he returned to Springfield for the Route 66 Centennial Celebration Kickoff alongside the Today show.

Per Springfield Daily Citizen, Goodman expressed gratitude for his time in Springfield for giving him direction, noting,  “It’s not like I feel like I owe them, but I do. My life came together here. I was drifting. I went to college just as a time-filler, I didn’t really have much of a purpose.” 

He also took a moment to take in the sights, as revealed in a photo showing him posing in front of a mural in Springfield, Missouri. The picture was posted by Meg Wagler, the artist who painted the beautiful mural.

Since the early 2000s, the Roseanne star has taken a slow-and-steady approach to his weight-loss journey. Over the two decades, he made lifestyle changes, such as quitting drinking, eating healthier, and working out six days a week with a personal trainer.

During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 2023, Goodman revealed that he had lost over 200 pounds. The funnyman continues his commitment to health at age 72, after weighing nearly 400 pounds at the height of Roseanne back in the early '90s.

Country music legend Randy Travis is celebrating another trip around the sun.

The Grammy-winning crooner officially turned 67 on Monday, May 4, taking to his Instagram Story to celebrate the occasion and thank his fans for sending sweet birthday wishes his way.

On this day in 1959, Travis was born in the city of Monroe, North Carolina. He grew up in a rural part of the state in a small town called Marshville, before moving to Nashville in the '80s to pursue a career in country music.

Ricki Lake is opening up to Maury Povich about how she dropped 40 pounds without using a GLP-1.

Lake, 57, rose to fame at just 20 years old in the role of Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 film Hairspray. However, it was her beloved ’90s daytime talk show, Ricki Lake, that made her a household name. In recent years, Lake went on a health journey, experiencing weight loss in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle. But in a new interview with fellow legendary chat show host Povich, Lake is opening up about how she managed to lose 40 pounds without the use of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Mounjaro.

"Not that there's anything wrong with them," she told Povich, on his podcast On Par with Maury Povich, People reported. "I have to preface by saying there's nothing wrong with anybody doing whatever they want to do to their bodies."

"I was 53 when I started this food plan, like keto, and intermittent fasting," Lake explained. "Keto is mostly like very high protein, high fat, a lot of meat...I was hiking every single morning, three miles every day. It became my meditation. And I did Pilates three to four days a week."

Sharing that her life was focused on a fitness and health mindset, Lake said she "was just in a zone. I wore a glucose monitor for six months. I wore my watch. I wore an aura ring, and I just really learned about my body, and I lost 40 pounds. I felt amazing."

The Only Downside to Lake's Weight Loss

Lake told Povich that the only downside to her weight loss was that she couldn't get rid of her double chin.

"So yeah, I own my age, but I also went and had an amazing facelift last year. I was 55... I had this extra chin hanging, and it really bothered me. I wasn't going to do anything about it, but then a friend of mine, a very close friend, the friend who does all the homework for you, she had an experience with this plastic surgeon, and I saw her eight days after her surgery. And she looked great," said Lake.

A year after the surgery, Lake shared an update on her Instagram page, noting that she "still felt extra cute and loved myself regardless, especially after working so hard to get in the best shape of my life."

The Pitt fandom is a passionate one. They don't hold back their opinions of the medical show's characters online, and apparently in person. Isa Briones addressed fans about their behavior during her Broadway show, Just in Time.

The actress is playing Connie Francis on stage between seasons, and used her Instagram Story on April 2, to address fans in the audience, according to Variety.

"HEY HEY HEY!: started the message in white texts over a black background. "Once again, Broadway is not a circus. Do not yell whatever you want at the performers. Yelling 'when are you going to finish your charts' before I sing 'Who's Sorry Now?' is f---ing disrespectful to the performers onstage and your fellow audience members. Y'all are pissin' me off."

Season 2 ended with a nice surprise for Santos. She blows off steam with Dr. Melissa King (Taylor Dearden) by singing "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette at karaoke. It's unlikely The Pitt fans will get to see Broines' singing abilities again.

The heckle about Briones finishing her charts was in reference to her character's struggle at the task throughout season 2. It was a somewhat funny subplot against the chaos of the hospital

Fans of the HBO show weren't happy with Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) either. The character was criticized for being too harsh on Dr. Mohan (Supriya Ganesh).

Briones replaced Sarah Hyland in the musical at the Square Theatre. Her Broadway debut was playing Eurydice in Hadestown in 2024.

Many fans and critics might find themselves a bit divided over the recent Michael Jackson-focused biopic Michael, but director Spike Lee is defending the new musical drama with predictably strong intensity.

During a recent interview with CNN, the 69-year-old Lee revealed that he had seen the new movie on two separate occasions, confirming that he had indeed "loved it." In that same conversation, the Do the Right Thing filmmaker defended the film for its handling of Jackson's most publicized controversies, including allegations related to child abuse.

As Lee saw it, the bulk of Michael is centered around the King of Pop's early life, notably ending in 1988, five years before the first allegation came out against Jackson. Because of this, Lee saw little reason for fans or critics to accuse Michael as glossing over the accusations, given the fact that said controversy did not occur in the span of the movie's time frame.

“First of all, if you’re a movie critic, and you’re complaining about the stuff — all this other stuff — but the movie ends at ‘88,” Lee explained. “The stuff you’re talking about, accusations, happen [later]. So you’re critiquing the film on something that you want in, but it doesn’t work in the timeline of the film. But people showed up. Worldwide, people showed their love.”

Of course, Lee also harbored a long-standing friendship with the pop star, something he went on to directly acknowledge in his conversation with CNN.

“I miss Mike. I miss Prince," Lee said, referencing Jackson and fellow music legend Prince. "I mean, these are my brothers. I worked with both of them. Both beautiful, beautiful people.”

While critics themselves remain divided over Michael's narrative, the movie has nevertheless proven popular enough among mainstream moviegoers. Since its release on April 24 in the U.S., the movie has earned an estimated $424 million at the box office, becoming the fourth highest-grossing movie of 2026 to date.

As Dancing with the Stars' alum Whitney Leavitt just wrapped her stint as the star of 'Chicago: The Musical,' her husband, Conner, is stepping in for his own stage debut.

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives cast member, who's become the embodiment of #husbandgoals while Whitney performed on bothDWTSand on Broadway, scored an Off-Broadway role in the show '11 to Midnight,' starting Friday, May 8.

"I'm honored to be making my stage debut with my friends over at 11 to Midnight," Conner exclusively told Parade. "Having the opportunity to perform alongside such a talented group of dancers every night is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Playing at New York's Orpheum Theater, '11 to Midnight' is "told through a mix of iconic pop hits and the unexpected musical rhythms of everyday life, put into original compositions," according to a press release. The show was created by viral dance duo Cost n’ Mayor (Austin and Marideth Telenko) and is complete with street-style dance numbers.

"I'm grateful to Cost n' Mayor and the whole team behind the production for helping me step into my own as a dancer and performer," Conner added.

Glee star Heather Morris and Dance Moms alum Nia Sioux will are also starring in the show.

Conner, who shares three kids with Whitney, has made a name for himself both on the Hulu show and as an all-around supportive husband as the mom-turned-reality-star has gone from filming SLOMW, to becoming a semi-finalist on DWTS, and has continued to pursue other ventures, including a holiday rom-com premiering later this year.

The news of Conner's new role though comes as Whitney announced during her last performance of 'Chicago' that she will not be returning to the reality show.

However, in an April Whitney posted a sweet Instagram dedicated to Conner, expressing gratitude for his support.

"Today marked Conner's 20th time seeing me in @chicagomusical 🥹😭 he’s my rock, my foundation, my everything," she wrote. "I can’t believe I only have two weeks left of my run in 'Chicago.' But, I’m so excited to see what’s next for us. I love you so much Conner. Thank you for not only helping me live my dream, but believing in it."

Conner will be performing in '11 to Midnight' until May 27.

Possibly the most influential musician second to The Beatles, Dylan has embodied the American spirit for his whole career with his biting, topical, and personal songwriting. I could go on and on about the ways his career has symbolized the trajectory of America from the '60s onward, but that's not what I'm here to do today.

In 2009, Dylan gave an exclusive interview with The Huffington Post where he named some of his favorite songwriters. A lot of familiar names came up, but the one that I'm focusing on is the legendary John Prine.

Bob Dylan Praised John Prine

Dylan said about the country singer: "Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs."

Prine came from similar humble beginnings to Dylan. Working as a mail carrier in Chicago, he would visit open mic Folk nights, a venue where Roger Ebert happened to be. Ebert was impressed, and published "Singing Mailman Who Delivers A Powerful Message In A Few Words."

In essence, this is the best way to describe Prine, who went on to win two Grammys, found a record company, and forever change the country music landscape. Prine touched the hearts of so many with incredible songs that combined a sharp sense of the world with a heart and humor. His music feels like you're listening to your grandpa tell stories. I think that's why so many people profoundly feel his absence today, where he is no longer with us.

Fans Mourn John Prine To This Day

A throwback to Prine's NPR Tiny Desk popped up on my feed recently, and I was struck by the amount of sorrow in the comments. There's a profound hole in the music world that Prine left, and it's never going to be filled.

In the video, Prine performs "Summer's End," the most popular song from his final album, The Tree of Forgiveness. The 2018 album sees Prine in a different place. He had survived not one but two different cancers. Squamous Cell cancer in his neck, and lung cancer. The battles were won but left him vocally in a different place, as a good portion of his neck had to be removed. A year of speech therapy brought his voice to where it is in this performance and on the record. A rougher, more weathered tone than his normal timbre.

Prine left us in 2020 from complications with COVID-19, and his loss still permeates the world, finding its way to the comment section of this TikTok.

"I loved the song… and then I saw the video and was just gutted. I miss him," one fan writes.

John Prine left an indelible impact on the world. His music and songwriting remain some of the most genuine human things I have ever encountered. For anyone who hasn't been blessed with getting to know his discography, I would highly recommend starting with his self-titled debut from 1971. A study by Ben-Gurion University professor Maya Shaton showed that turning off investment news and focusing on Year-Over-Year (YoY) growth can actually increase your overall portfolio by 10%-20%. The reasoning behind the science is that a single monthly dip could make you want to ditch a stock that ultimately pays out in the long run. 

Shaton’s study, “The Display of Information and Household Investment Behavior,” analyzed the impact of a regulatory change in Israel regarding short-term performance displays. The change required investments to stop showing short-term performance and focus more on a 12-month window. When investors stopped reviewing their portfolios monthly and began looking more long-term, they reacted less dramatically to market volatility.

In our current economic climate, it’s easy to be nervous about dips in your portfolio. The results of this study, however, found that when you consider your portfolio over longer periods, say at least 12 months, volatility is actually lower. It’s the ultimate exercise in trusting the process to turn out great, even if the middle part doesn’t fill you with confidence. 

Trusting the process and allowing your investments to work in the long-term means disconnecting from the 24-hour financial news cycle. Global market activity is observable at any time and can lead to a lot of anxiety if you’re focused on the short term. One market expert may warn you to protect your investment in low-risk, low-yield funds, while another may be barking that the hottest new stock has already doubled or tripled in value and you’re missing out by not throwing everything you have at it.

Rudy Giuliani's hospitalization is due to an "overwhelming" bout of pneumonia.

Following news that the former New York City mayor was hospitalized in critical condition on Sunday, May 3, his spokesman, Ted Goodman, shared to People that Giuliani remains in "critical but stable condition" and is "recovering from pneumonia."

"On September 11th, Mayor Giuliani ran toward the towers to help those in need, which later led to a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease," Goodman told the outlet on Monday, May 4. "This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition."

According to Goodman, the 81-year-old is now "breathing on his own, with his family and primary medical provider at his side."

"Mayor Giuliani is the ultimate fighter—as he has demonstrated throughout his life—and he is winning this battle," he said. "His family deeply appreciates the outpouring of love and support. The mayor believes in the power of prayer, and we are feeling that strength today."

In August 2025, Giuliani was in a car accident in New Hampshire which left him with multiple serious injuries, including a fractured vertebra.

It was reported that Giuliani had pulled over to assist a woman whom he believed was the victim of domestic violence. After calling 911 and waiting for first responders to arrive, Giuliani continued driving, just to be struck from behind moments later.

Giuliani previously served as the mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001 before joining President Donald Trump's team as a legal advisor and personal attorney during his first presidential term.

Following news of his hospitalization, the president wrote on Truth Social that Giuliani is a “True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR.”

Beach lovers are falling in love with Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. That's because Investopedia says this beach town is more affordable than many other spots around the country, giving retirees on a budget a chance to buy a home in the region.

The town's cost of living is about the same as the country's average and just 1% higher than the rest of the state's. Plus, if you didn't already know, Delaware's favorable tax laws make the state a little easier on your budget, thanks to a lack of sales tax and taxes on Social Security payments.

William Golding's Lord of the Flies has spent 72 years being required reading in schools across the country, frightening and frustrating English teachers and students. Its question, what happens to ordinary boys when the guardrails of civilization are removed, has never fully gone away. That question has its first-ever television adaptation, and it lands on Netflixtoday, May 4th.

The four-episode limited series arrives in the U.S., written and developed by Jack Thorne, the Emmy-winning screenwriter who co-created Adolescence, Netflix's nine-episode single-take drama about a 13-year-old accused of murder, which became one of the most-watched series in the platform's history last year. Thorne shot both projects during the same summer, and the thematic overlap is not subtle. 'As a society, we're having a conversation right now about boys,' Thorne said in an interview with Netflix. 'We're losing a generation of boys, and we're losing it because of the hate they are ingesting, because it is an answer to their loneliness and isolation.'

The series follows a group of English schoolboys who survive a plane crash and find themselves stranded on a tropical island in the Pacific. Shot on location in Malaysia, the cast is composed almost entirely of first-time actors, found through an open casting call organized by Nina Gold, the casting director behind Game of Thrones. Winston Sawyers plays Ralph, the group's reluctant leader; David McKenna plays Piggy; Lox Pratt plays Jack, the choirboy whose ambitions pull the group apart; and Ike Talbut plays Simon. Each of the four episodes is named for and centered on one of these characters, an unconventional structural choice that gives each boy's unraveling its own weight and pacing.

Critics who saw the series when it first aired on BBC One in February gave it strong marks. On Rotten Tomatoes the show holds a 91% score, with a Metacriticconsensus of 84, ratings that put it in clear company with Adolescence as one of the year's most acclaimed limited series. The Telegraph awarded it five stars and described it as a first-class example of an adaptation done right. The Spectator called it 'mesmerically brilliant.' The Independent suggested it would 'terrify parents as much as Adolescence.'

Director Marc Munden, who also helmed Thorne's acclaimed Help, shot the series with a deliberately immersive style, fisheye lenses, close quarters, a handheld quality that makes the boys feel uncomfortably real. The score, composed by Hans Zimmer alongside Kara Talve and Cristobal Tapia de Veer, blends classical choral music with mounting unease. Golding's family gave the production their blessing, and the ending is faithful to the novel's grimly earned conclusion.

Thorne has spoken about shooting Lord of the Flies and Adolescence simultaneously, noting that the two projects fed into each other. 'The difference between boys aged 10 and 12 compared to 13 and 14 is huge,' he told an audience at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. 'All the boys in Flies are negotiating the people they're going to become, whereas Jamie has made decisions about the person he is when we meet him in Adolescence.'

Lord of the Flies begins streaming on Netflix on Monday, May 4. All four episodes are available.

The moment quickly spread online, reigniting long-standing calls for a full group comeback.

The two pop queens were leaned into their signature looks, with Sporty Spice rocking her signature Adidas track pants and an orange midriff-baring crop top, and Scary Spice sporting baggy jeans and a patterned long-sleeved crop top — unmistakable nods to their ’90s heyday.

Chatter of a reunion tour has been buzzing for years. In March this year, however, Mel C confirmed that there were no plans for the Spice Girls to hit the road together again. But with the British pop group approaching their 30th anniversary, however, fans see the timing as too perfect to ignore. Sooo, fingers crossed.

According to People, the last time all five women —  Melanie “Mel B” Brown ("Scary Spice"), Melanie “Mel C” Chrisholm ("Sporty Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice"), and Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice") — performed together for a crowd was at the Closing Ceremony for the 2012 Olympics.

For now, we’re all just holding onto moments like this one and hoping it’s not the last.
