According to The Guardian, Letterman allegedly happened across Korine searching through Streep’s purse, leading the TV host to kick the director out from The Late Show‘s studio and enforce a strict ban that prevented him from ever returning.

“I went upstairs to greet Meryl Streep and welcome her to the show, and I knock on the door … and she was not in there,” Letterman remembered. “And I looked around, and she was not in there, and I found Harmony going through her purse. True story. And so I said: ‘That’s it, put her things back in her bag and then get out.'”

Though a tense encounter, Letterman eventually relented on his stance, offering to have the director back on the show after he completed rehab.

In 2008, Korine opened up about this turbulent period in his life, calling it a “crazy time” that was filled with plenty of low moments, such as his ejection from The Late Show. Korine went so far as to say that, by that point in his life, his health had spiraled so far out of control, he felt sure he only had a few years left to live.

“I felt pretty debased and lost,” Korine revealed. “I became like a tramp. I wasn’t delusional. I didn’t think I was going to be OK. I thought: ‘This might be the end.’ I’d read enough books. I knew where this story ended. The story finishes itself.”

Jelly Roll has decided its time to open up about his political affiliation, and he’s done it in the best way possible.

The need arose after he guest-hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! throughout the week starting Aug. 24, 2026. He made some jokes about President Donald Trump, immediately leading to backlash from those who believed he supported the current president, and on Aug. 27, he decided to use the monologue as a chance to address everything.

While addressing the backlash and breaking his silence, he did it in a way that marks a great thing about being an American: “The democracy, the freedom of speech.”

Throughout the monologue, Jelly Roll noted that many people have made assumptions about him based on his religion, where he comes from, and various comments he’s made. Some believe him to be MAGA, while others believe that he’s “some sort of liberal snowflake.” He thinks that many people project their beliefs onto him, and he’s not used to that.

As he shared clips of people commenting about his Trump jokes, he also shared clips of people commenting on him praising the UFC Freedom 250 event. They sit on both sides of the political spectrum, and the country music singer made one thing clear: “Just because I watched a fight on TV doesn’t mean I support everything this administration does, just like hosting Jimmy Kimmel’s show doesn’t mean I have all of Jimmy Kimmel’s politics.”

In the end, he made it clear that he’s probably “like most folks,” and that’s down the middle. However, it’s clear that he often likes to keep his politics to himself, even back in February, making it clear that he didn’t have much of a comment about the State of the Union right now.

One thing he made clear is that he supports human rights. He supports human dignity, and that doesn’t mean supporting one side or another, continuing with, “Human dignity isn’t Republican nor Democrat. Compassion isn’t left wing, and mercy isn’t right wing. Pain and healing know no partisanship. Hurting hearts are more important than poll numbers. And there are no boundaries or borders for broken families.”

He ended the speech by making one thing clear: he will continue to shake the hand of any president who occupies the office. That’s something he was raised to do by his veteran father, and it’s something he will continue to do in his father’s memory. Taking pictures and making jokes doesn’t define his politics, so it’s time for people to stop reading into things and allow democracy and freedom of speech.

This wraps up Jelly Roll’s guest-hosting spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and he made sure people understood what it meant to him. The late-night talk show was the first place he performed his music on national TV, where he did his first skit, and where he sat on the couch for the first time. It has been an honor he will never forget.

Canadian hardcore band Comeback Kid is taking its new era on the road with the announcement of the “Chosen Hell” Western USA Tour, a 14-date run that will bring the band across Texas, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah and Colorado.

The tour begins on Nov. 7 at Flyover Fest in Oklahoma City and ends on Nov. 23 in Denver, Colorado. Several hardcore acts will join Comeback Kid on different parts of the trek, including Dead Heat, Fear of Loss, Slow Pulse, Defeater, Barrio Slam, The Warriors and Time X Heist.

Comeback Kid shared the news on Instagram. The newly announced dates arrive as Comeback Kid prepares to release its eighth studio album, Chosen Hell, on Nov. 6. The record will be released through SharpTone Records in the U.S. and Dine Alone Records in Canada.

The Pacific Northwest dates in Portland and Tacoma will bring together Comeback Kid, The Warriors, Dead Heat and Barrio Slam. The final stretch in Boise, Salt Lake City, and Denver will feature The Warriors, Dead Heat and Time X Heist alongside Comeback Kid.

The Western USA Tour will follow the release of “Chosen Hell,” the latest full-length album from Comeback Kid and the follow-up to 2022’s “Heavy Steps.”

Comeback Kid vocalist Andrew Neufeld explained the meaning behind the album’s title track, saying, according to Blabbermouth: “The theme of the title track ‘Chosen Hell’ on our new album touches on morality and ethics. Something as simple as right or wrong. Good or evil. Healthy or unhealthy, and our ability to make a choice. Often, we are incapable of choosing the right thing, and we find ourselves in situations that we know hold us back, therefore affecting our own well being. The outcome is what we make of it.”

Comeback Kid formed in Winnipeg in the early 2000s and has spent more than two decades touring and releasing music in the hardcore scene. The current lineup includes Neufeld, guitarists Jeremy Hiebert and Stu Ross, bassist Chase Brenneman, and drummer Terrance Pettitt.

Comeback Kid’s newly announced tour will give fans a run of shows built around the band’s latest album and a rotating group of hardcore acts.

Dolly Parton might have been a giant in the music industry, but throughout her life, the legendary singer-songwriter maintained a deep-seated love for reading.

Consuming an average of 50 books a year, Parton’s favorite books ranged from classic children’s books to more recent romantic epics. According to People magazine, however, one of the singer’s favorite story was one she heard throughout her childhood.

As mentioned by People, Parton once revealed in an interview that one of the most impactful stories her mother ever read her was none other than the classic 20th century children’s story, The Little Engine That Could.

As Parton remembered it, hearing her mother tell the now beloved tall tale helped instill a feeling of perseverance throughout her life, giving her the resolve to pursue many of her greatest ambitions.

“On many occasions, when my dream seemed far away, my mama would tell me the story of the Little Engine to comfort and encourage me,” Parton said. “While I listened to her, I would close my eyes and think of myself as the Little Engine and just start saying over and over again, ‘I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.’ It gave me strength, it gave me hope, and it gave me the courage to keep chasing my dreams.”

Tiger Woods made a rare public appearance this week, and it was enough to set off a wave of concern online.

The 15-time major champion appeared in a pre-recorded video message Tuesday during the Payne Stewart Award ceremony, honoring his longtime friend and fellow golfer, Notah Begay III. It was one of the only times Woods has been seen publicly since a rollover crash back in March, which led to him being charged with two misdemeanor counts of DUI, including property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Police reportedly found two opioid tablets in his pocket at the scene. Woods later spent time in a rehab facility in Switzerland before returning to the U.S., where he’s largely avoided cameras ever since.

Once the tribute video began circulating on social media via Golf Channel, reactions split sharply. Some viewers zeroed in on how different Woods looked. “Tiger looks a shell of his former self, sadly,” one commenter wrote, while another said he “looked spaced out.” “He is so lost,” another online commenter wrote, a sentiment echoed across multiple threads reacting to the footage.

Other fans pushed back on the speculation, defending Woods and urging people to show restraint. “The way everyone in these replies is just diagnosing him like he’s a lab specimen is crazy,” one person wrote, adding that Woods had simply shown up to honor a friend.

Woods’ legal case tied to the March arrest is still pending. A source close to the golfer told reporters he remains determined to return to competitive golf eventually, but that doing so will depend on getting his pain management and fitness routine back on track first. Woods still holds the PGA Tour record with 82 career wins and 15 majors, a mark current stars continue to chase but haven’t yet caught.

If not for Oasis, then The Killers might never have come together.

Speaking with Vernon Kay on BBC Radio 2, Brandon Flowers recalled the night that changed his musical trajectory. “Sort of had a pretty serendipitous night. I was at the Hard Rock, and Oasis were playing,” Flowers explained, noting he wasn’t even an Oasis fan at the time. While wandering around the casino, a stranger who happened to have extra tickets approached him out of nowhere. “A guy walks out and hands me his ticket to Oasis. He had a few tickets, and he was leaving.”

Flowers made it in time to catch the encore, meaning he missed most of the set. But what he did see left a lasting impression. The band closed with “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” a song Flowers already knew but experienced entirely differently in that moment.  “I was aware of the song, but I was hearing it differently now and watching the reactions,” he said. The crowd made an especially lasting impression. Flowers remembered seeing “a lot of Brits” in the audience, singing along with their arms around one another. 

That night sparked something bigger than just fandom. Flowers said the moment directly influenced his own musical journey, pushing him to start seeking out guitar players shortly afterward. That search eventually led him to Dave Keuning, the future Killers guitarist who would help form the band alongside him. “So the ticket was quite an influence,” Flowers reflected. “And then I became a huge Oasis fan.”

Some of the biggest musical influences come from the most unexpected places, and for Brandon Flowers, his lifelong love of Oasis started with a stranger’s spontaneous act of generosity.

Kate Bush was just 19 when “Wuthering Heights” became her breakthrough hit in 1978. The song topped the U.K. charts and introduced listeners to an artist unlike anyone else in pop music.

The song was inspired by Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel of the same name, but Bush did not first discover the story while writing the song. As a teenager, she caught the final moments of a 1967 BBC adaptation and was immediately captivated.

“I just managed to catch the very last few minutes where there was a hand coming through the window and blood everywhere and glass,” Bush recalled in a 1978 BBC interview. “And I just didn’t know what was going on and someone explained the story.” 

The imagery stayed with her for years. When Bush was 18, she sat down at the piano and began writing a song from the perspective of Catherine Earnshaw, the troubled heroine of Brontë’s novel. She had not actually read the book when the idea first came to her, but once she decided to turn it into a song, she read it from cover to cover to make sure she got the story right. 

The record was a significant departure from what was dominating the British charts at the time. As punk, new wave, progressive rock and disco filled the airwaves, Bush stood apart with her sweeping arrangement and haunting vocals.

She also leaned into the supernatural side of the story, singing in an unusually high register to capture Catherine’s ghostly presence. “It was really specifically for that song,” Bush said. “I’m playing Cathy and she was a spirit, and it needed some kind of ethereal effect.”

When it came time to choose Bush’s debut single, “Wuthering Heights” was not the first choice for her record label. EMI reportedly preferred “James and the Cold Gun,” a more rock-oriented track Bush had performed with the KT Bush Band. Bush, however, was adamant that “Wuthering Heights” should come first (and she won the argument). 

The song got two music videos, one filmed in a studio and another shot outdoors on Salisbury Plain. The stark Wiltshire landscape was chosen to echo the windswept Yorkshire setting of the novel.

Bush turned out to be right. “Wuthering Heights” shot to No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart only three weeks after its release, making her the first woman to top the chart with a self-written and self-performed song.

The track knocked ABBA’s “Take a Chance on Me” from the top spot and stayed at No. 1 for four weeks. It also reached the top of the charts in Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and Australia.

Bush’s debut album, The Kick Inside, arrived the following month and went on to sell more than one million copies. 

“Wuthering Heights” was just the beginning. Over the years, Bush built a career around theatrical performances and ambitious storytelling, releasing 10 studio albums and memorable songs like “Hounds of Love” and “Babooshka” along the way.

A story too eerie for its own author to fully explain is finally coming to the screen. Prime Video has greenlit a six-part limited series based on Stephen King‘s “Crouch End,” the horror master’s only story set in London and one of his most overtly Lovecraftian works. For longtime King readers, it’s a deep cut finally getting its due.

“Crouch End” first appeared in the 1980 anthology “New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos” before King folded it into his 1993 collection “Nightmares & Dreamscapes.” Named for the real North London neighborhood where it unfolds, the story centers on two police officers working a night shift who recount the strange disappearance of an American tourist’s husband. The series keeps that mystery intact with the synopsis simply saying “London never sleeps deeply, and its dreams are uneasy.” When global movie star Doris Freeman bursts into a police station claiming strange phenomena are behind her husband’s disappearance, inspector Ted Vetter has to determine whether she’s telling the truth, hiding something darker, or caught up in a mystery far stranger than either.

Paul Tomalin, known for “Bodies” and “Torchwood,” is writing the adaptation, while Tom Shankland, whose credits include “House of Guinness” and “The Leopard,” directs. Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season are producing, and the project marks the first King adaptation ever filmed in the UK. “I’ve been a Stephen King super-fan forever,” Shankland said in a statement. “The chance to work with this great team and bring his utterly brilliant London mystery to life is beyond exciting.”

Tomalin, who is also an executive producer alongside Shankland, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane and Ben Irving, said the story has stuck with him for years. “Stephen King’s vivid prose has haunted my nightmares ever since,” he said. Nicole Clemens, VP of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, called King “one of the defining storytellers of our time,” adding that the series will “grip audiences worldwide with its visceral crime thriller and supernatural mystery.”

Casting hasn’t been announced yet, though Variety reports interest is already building around the project. The show joins a growing wave of King material in production, including the streamer’s upcoming “Carrie” series from Mike Flanagan and HBO Max’s “IT: Welcome to Derry.”

While the boyfriends and flings of Sex and City‘s stars had varied reputations, one actor recently revealed that was hesitant to join the show out of fear that his character might be considered cringey.

“I had read for for Sex and the City. I got offers, and I’m going to be truthful here,” actor Robert John Burke told Kristin Davis in a recent episode of her Are You a Charlotte? podcast. “I was trying to avoid the show. I didn’t want it to be some guy with some foible for the rest of my life.”

Burke further explained that he didn’t want to become recognized for being “the dude with really bad breath,” or another embarrassing trait which many of the show’s male counterparts had.

However, he shared that after a conversation with the show’s creator Michael Patrick King, he was convinced to take the role.

“I’m like, ‘What’s what’s his problem?’ They’re like, ‘He has no problem’ and I’m like, ‘Tell me what his problem is.’ They’re like, ‘he doesn’t have one.’

“So it was ultimately to be with Miranda,” Lewis recalled of his part as Walker Lewis starring opposite Cynthia Nixon‘s character. “It was fun. I had fun. It was very awkward. We had the two sex scenes. That was hilarious.”

While Burke, only starred in two episodes, his role was particularly notable for Nixon’s character as she first meets Lewis for a date while she’s pregnant and then the two reconnect after she has her baby. For Miranda, Lewis represented her single, baby-less self, a part of her she was trying to hold on to after giving birth.

The actor, who also had a long-running role in Law and Order: SVU, also shared the not-so-glamorous side of shooting sex scenes, however he spoke highly about working with Nixon.

“My time with Cynthia was just fantastic,” he said. “We had fun. We had laughs, so it was it was painless in that respect.”

Big Brother’s house is open once more! Every week, Parade’s Mike Bloom will be bringing you interviews with this season’s houseguests as they get evicted from the game.

Mallory Aurichio believed she had laid the pipeline to $750,000. After a couple of stints on the block, she found herself in quite the advantageous position, nestled within the four-person “F.A.P.” alliance, which itself was nestled in the newfound “Mosh Pit” alliance. She felt so comfortable, in fact, that she threw the most recent HoH competition, eager for Dee Valladares to get blood on her hands. She had no idea, however, the blood would be her own. In a move that time-travels all the way back to the first week, Dee’s second reign ended the way her first started: By targeting Mallory. The “Pipe Queen” was suddenly blocked up on the block, with a Jordan almond-size chance of surviving the week.

Rocket scientist Mallory was hoping to keep some space between her and her career. But she was immediately put on the defensive when Dee entered her orbit. The Survivor winner won the first HoH and went after her, feeling their lack of communication made her an easy first boot. Luckily, Mallory waylaid that outcome when she dominated the first Veto competition, giving her a new deep-seated motivation to get revenge on her and the icons. Her list only grew a couple of weeks later, when Kamu Kirk not only put her up, but also hijacked her tea party to call out Jason De Puy. But Mallory had no idea at that point, in a different timeline, she could have been the ultimate person burned as, had she not won the Block Buster, there was a fair chance she would be throwing parties from home the rest of the season.

These clutch competition wins gave Mallory the opportunity to create some much-needed relationships and alliances in the house. Chief among them was a quartet formed with Barrett Pfeiffer, Drew Campbell, and Melody Morris, which the men negotiated while simultaneously working with the icons in the “Crossover” alliance. As the majority “Toolshed” alliance blew up, and the winds of the game twisted, Mallory attempted to gain power for her and her alliance, only to come up short. She got voted to enter the “BB Time Capsule” by the fans, only to exit it with merely 48 hours of ivy-laden bonding with Melody. The two ladies debated a last-minute vote flip of their own to keep Kamu and take out Angela Murray, but decided to not go against the Mosh Pit when the concert had barely started. And, most consequentially, she purposely slowed down on the balance beam in the most-recent HoH, believing Dee would stick with the new alliance as well and target the newfound outsiders.

She had no idea, however, how off-balance her game would become. Initially, it seemed like the duo of La Trice “Lala” Verrett and Taylor Brown were in the hot seat, with the icons even considering turning on one of their most loyal allies in Drew. However, as eyes turned to the Veto, Rick Devens had another angle to pursue. When Lala won safety, he made his pitch to his fellow castaway, saying Mallory would eventually come for them, and it would be better to nip in the bud while they had power. And so, Dee and Mallory’s final conversation in the HoH room mirrored their first. In an incredibly uncomfortable scene, Dee told Mallory she would be going up, prompting yet another emotional reaction. However, while the first time was digested through tears, this one had the heat and propulsion of rocket fuel. Furious at the outcome, Mallory spent what would be her final few days in the house punching pillows and screaming in the Diary Room. Unfortunately, the third time wasn’t the charm when it came to clutch competition wins. This time, it was Drew who took home the much-needed victory, setting up one final flight on Mallory Airlines out the front door.

Now out of the house, Mallory talks with Parade about her adverse reaction to being nominated, her thoughts on both Barrett and Drew’s games, and what it meant to walk out during the 1000th episode.

Let’s talk about your final days in orbit of the Big Brother planet. How do you look back upon your campaigning strategy once you were nominated? Do you feel like there was anything you could have done in retrospect to help your case?
I mean, I don’t want to say that. I don’t know for sure if anything could have been different. But it really did feel like it was out of my hands. Once they saw the F.A.P. alliance as a strong four, and they knew I was going to be mad and I was going to come for them before they even put it together. Even when Dee told me I was she was considering me for the renom, I was like, “They’re gonna realize they’re burning this bridge, and I’m gonna be mad.” And I was. So it was really hard to try and convince them otherwise because it just didn’t make logical sense that I would be like, “No, it’s fine. I want to keep working with you guys.” And that was like kind of all I could say. So I don’t know if campaigning more would have changed the thing. I did a lot, but I don’t know if there was anything more I could have done.

You had two very adverse reactions to Dee nominating you. And you’ve called her a baby, a liar, a coward, and “the worst person ever born.” What made this nomination provoke that reaction of you?
Well part of what made it so upsetting is we literally like just formed this Mosh Pit alliance a week before I was the renom. And she went out of her way multiple times to say, “Final Seven, no matter what. No pawns, no nothing.” When she won HoH, she was like, “You girls are good; don’t even worry about it.” That just kind of felt like overkill and it made the being the renom so much more upsetting.

I had been thinking, “I’m going to Week 8 and I’m going to be in the Top 10.” I had already had these things in my head because she overkilled it. She told me I would be totally fine no matter what. So yeah, that was it. It made it really stink. And I also just don’t think it was the right move, which made me mad. I never really wanted to trust the icons that much, but I had a lot of reassurance that it would be fine. I kind of felt like you know the rest of my FAP alliance was going with them, I didn’t want to break off from that. So, but then I had to reap the consequences of it, which was really frustrating.

Well, you mention not trusting the icons. And I think that’s a large reason why you’re talking with me right now. Since the first time Dee nominated you, you were definitely one of the most vocal anti-Dee people in the house, which came to roost this week. Why were you so upfront about going after her, especially considering how connected she was in the house?
It just kind of seemed like that was the side of the house that I was on. That was kind of the goal to go after them, and I wanted people to think that I was going to do that too. I wanted people to think I’m a good competitor that’s going to go after these three people. But if they stay in the house, they’re just going to steamroll and win. So I kind of hoped that would make people want to keep me more.

Let’s talk about your relationship with Barrett. The two of you were obviously close, with him even giving you a shoutout while you were sitting feet away from him. But you also had to contend with the fact that he was working with the icons from pretty much the beginning. What was it like to work with him?
I mean, I did have some trouble trusting that he was always telling me the full truth, and he wasn’t withholding information from me. But I did always believe that he didn’t want to put my game in harm’s way, and he had my best interest. And I still do think that’s true. I just think he miscalculated what was going to happen. I didn’t think he was like gonna try and get me out, basically. But I do think he got me in a little bit of a pickle.

What about Drew?
I think Drew is making a mistake with his game right now. He was very sad to vote me out.

Yeah, I’m not sure if you know this, but the audience apparently gasped when he voted for you. And he heard it.
Really? But he was very sad to do it. So it’s hard to be really mad at someone that is crying and hugging you when they win the Block Buster because they know what they have to do. But I think he’s making a mistake with this game right now. He is one of the most disliked people in the house. Melody is furious at him. Barrett’s furious at him. Yash, Taylor, Lala think he’s the biggest liar and want him out. Haley doesn’t even really like him. So he’s only kind of left with the icons, and he’s at the bottom there. So I think even if he had voted against the icons, he would have gained respect from more people. And Barrett wouldn’t be so mad at him. He’s gonna get it from Melody.

Oh, he already has.
[Laughs.] So I think he’s making a mistake. I think it’s really clear that the icons are kind of running it right now. And I guess he doesn’t see that. He thinks he’s with them, but he’s kind of just “Icon Junior” right now.

Give your rapid-fire thoughts on each of the remaining houseguests. Starting with Angela.

I want to finish by talking about the fact that you went out during the 1000th episode of Big Brother. Julie mentioned that you came out to a standing ovation, and the alumni were apparently chanting “Pipe Queen” during your exit. What was that experience like? Did you get the chance to interact with any alumni before you were carted off?
So that was really awesome for them to be chanting for me, and it was cool. It was surreal. I didn’t really get to interact with them. I was kind of hauled off right away. But Morgan was there and she hosted a competition. Paul was there and he hosted a competition. Jesse was there and he did Wrestlegasm. So I had seen some of them before, but I didn’t get to interact with them. And Rachel was there, who I saw in the beginning. But it was so cool to see them there and see some of my favorite people.

Over the course of her larger-than-life career, Dolly Parton managed to deliver an assortment of popular films that paired her with plenty of iconic co-stars.

One such example of this was her ill-fated comedy with Sylvester Stallone in Rhinestone, a middling 1984 box office flop that lives on in infamy as one of Sly’s worst-received films.

As bad as the finished movie turned out to be, the movie nevertheless helped Parton and Stallone became great friends throughout the former’s life. While they eventually struck up a close relationship through their work on the film, Parton once revealed that she confronted Stallone over what she viewed as a dismissive attitude towards a bystander in need.

In her autobiography, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business, Parton wrote that, while on the set of Rhinestone, she once tried to give a homeless man shivering next to a trashcan her shawl to help him keep warm.

Noticing Parton trying to aid the man, Stallone stepped in to stop her. “Just as I wrapped the shawl around the man, Stallone walked up and jerked it away,” she wrote. “‘Don’t you put that good shawl over that scum!’ he said. ‘He could have made something of himself. We did.’”

Rather than balking at Stallone’s comments, Parton stood up to her co-star, defending the man and calling Sly out for his perceived callous attitude.

“That could have been you, you ungrateful son of a b***h!” Parton yelled at Stallone. “Except by the grace of God. Who knows, it could be an angel sent to show you what you really are.”

Fortunately, the two stars were able to patch things up by the next day, with Stallone even purchasing a blanket for the man as a formal apology. In the years since, Stallone and Parton would speak favorably about each other, with the Rocky actor publicly mourning Parton’s passing earlier this week.

Hugh Cornwell turns 77 today, marking another year for the man who helped turn British punk into something more musically ambitious than its reputation for three-chord aggression suggested.

Before music, Cornwell studied biochemistry at Bristol University and moved to Sweden for postgraduate research. It was there, almost by accident, that he formed a band called Johnny Sox, which he brought back to London and eventually reshaped into the Stranglers in 1974.

Cornwell served as the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist through 1990, a run that made them one of the most commercially successful acts to emerge from the UK punk scene alongside contemporaries like the Sex Pistols and the Clash. But the Stranglers set themselves apart almost immediately by leaning into keyboards and unconventional songwriting rather than punk’s stripped-down formula.

That willingness to experiment produced the band’s defining moment: “Golden Brown,” released in 1982. Built around an unusual, waltz-like rhythm that shifts between time signatures, the song became a global crossover hit, climbing to No. 2 on the UK singles chart despite sounding almost nothing like the punk rock the band had built its name on. Its hypnotic melody has kept it in steady rotation for more than four decades, including a prominent placement on the soundtrack of Guy Ritchie’s international hit film “Snatch.”

Cornwell stepped away from the Stranglers in 1990 to focus on a solo career that has since produced ten studio albums, along with several books, including a pair of novels and his 2004 autobiography, “A Multitude of Sins.” He’s continued touring and recording well into his solo years, long outlasting the initial wave of British punk he helped define.

Nearly 45 years after “Golden Brown” first climbed the charts, the song is still one of the most recognizable crossover hits to emerge from the punk era.

In 1965, Donovan was still a teenager when the British press saddled him with one of the most daunting comparisons a young singer-songwriter could receive: Bob Dylan.

The Scottish musician had emerged from Britain’s folk scene with “Catch the Wind,” an acoustic hit whose Dylan influence was hard to miss. Before long, journalists were calling Donovan “the new Dylan” and “England’s answer to Bob Dylan.”

Dylan himself was well aware of his supposed new rival.

In D.A. Pennebaker’s Dont Look Back, filmed during Dylan’s 1965 tour of England, former Animals keyboardist Alan Price tells Dylan that Donovan is a very good guitarist.

“He’s better than you,” Price says.

“Yeah,” Dylan replies. “Right away I hate him.”

There was little reason to think Dylan actually hated Donovan. The young singer soon became part of the circle around Dylan, even performing “To Sing for You” for him in another memorable scene from the documentary.

More importantly, Donovan wasn’t destined to remain anyone’s answer to Bob Dylan.

Within a couple of years, Donovan had shed much of the Dylan imitation and developed a far more eclectic identity, incorporating jazz, pop, blues, psychedelia and other influences into his music.

The “Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll” similarly points to that transformation. After Donovan began working with producer Mickie Most, his folkie restraint gave way to increasingly exotic instrumentation, including sitars, flutes, cellos and harps. The book identifies “Sunshine Superman” as his biggest hit, reaching No. 1 in 1966.

Donovan was only 19 when he recorded the song in late 1965.

As Fred Bronson recounts in “The Billboard Book of Number One Hits,” Donovan brought “Sunshine Superman” to Most, who heard its potential but envisioned a very different arrangement. Donovan later recalled that they entered the studio at 2 p.m. on a Sunday and had the record finished by 5.

In other words, the song that would help reinvent Donovan was essentially captured in three hours.

Unfortunately, making the record was considerably easier than releasing it.

A contractual dispute left “Sunshine Superman” sitting on the shelf for months. Bronson writes that Britain’s Pye label removed the single from its release schedule amid the legal entanglement surrounding Donovan and Most.

By the time it finally came out in America, Donovan worried that too much time had passed.

He needn’t have worried.

“Sunshine Superman” entered the Hot 100 at No. 90 and kept climbing. The single ultimately sold 800,000 copies in six weeks and more than 1 million overall.

Sixty years ago this week, it reached No. 1, knocking the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Summer in the City” out of the top spot. The chart dated Sept. 3 also found Donovan sitting above the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine,” the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” and the Hollies’ “Bus Stop.”

It would be Donovan’s only No. 1 hit in America.

For a singer who had entered the spotlight with the press measuring him against Bob Dylan, “Sunshine Superman” marked something much more significant than a chart triumph. Donovan had stopped sounding like the next somebody else.

At 19, he had begun finding a sound unmistakably his own.

Donovan’s musical world was becoming intertwined with some of the biggest names of the era.

He became friends with Paul McCartney, even contributing the phrase “sky of blue and sea of green” to The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine.”

Decades later, Donovan recalled that his future wife, Linda Lawrence, was his muse during those heady years. The pair had met in 1965 but spent years apart before eventually reuniting and marrying.

“Record companies and music publishers love a broken-hearted songwriter,” Donovan joked in a 2017 interview with the Irish Independent.

“Sunshine Superman became the album that turned people like The Beatles on because the No.1 hits kept coming.”

His influence on The Beatles soon became more tangible.

During their famous 1968 trip to India, Donovan taught John Lennon a fingerpicking guitar technique that Lennon subsequently used on songs including “Dear Prudence,” “Julia” and “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.”

McCartney confirmed the connection in a Radio Luxembourg interview that year, explaining, “John picks the guitar because he learned off Donovan when we were in India.”

Lennon, McCartney and Donovan also spent time writing together there. McCartney recalled sitting on a roof with the two musicians when he began playing what became “Rocky Raccoon,” with the trio making up words as the song took shape.

It was quite a journey for a musician who, only a few years earlier, had been introduced to much of the public as somebody else’s answer to Bob Dylan.

“Sunshine Superman” helped change that. Sixty years after it reached No. 1, it remains a snapshot of the moment the 19-year-old folk singer stepped out of Dylan’s shadow and into the psychedelic sound that would define his own career.

This week, the news of Dolly Parton‘s death at 80 shook the music world. Friends, fans, and collaborators have taken to social media with an outpouring of love and sweet sentiments about her lasting impact, generosity, and unforgettable personality. Following her death, her legacy continues to thrive, as it will for generations to come: the country queen’s catalog just earned a new accolade.

Just days after the legendary singer’s death, Parton makes history by becoming the first artist ever to occupy the entire Top 10 of US iTunes without new music. Overall, she’s reportedly the third artist to reach the feat, joining Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj (who both had released new music at the time).

With a stunning near-eight-decade-spanning career, the musical icon has released over 1,000 songs, with ten of them standing out among fans on iTunes: “Hard Candy Christmas” (No. 10), “There Was Jesus” (No. 9), Brad Paisley‘s “When I Get Where I’m Going” (No. 8), “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” (No. 7), “Coat of Many Colors” (No. 6), “Here You Come Again” (No. 5), “Islands in the Stream” (No. 4), “Jolene” (No. 3), “9 to 5” (No. 2), and unsurprisingly in the top spot at No. 1, the powerful and emotional ballad “I Will Always Love You.”

Notably, Whitney Houston‘s 1992 cover of the track for The Bodyguard was ranked the No. 1 greatest Dolly Parton cover of all time by Ranker.

As Parade previously reported, Parton’s nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, revealed the news of her death in a video shared to her official Instagram account on Monday, Aug. 25.

“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Seaver said. “As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”

“It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” he added. “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents and countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.”

Following the announcement, reps confirmed to People that she died after a “brief battle with cancer.” The type of cancer was not revealed.

Gladys Knight is planning to slow down her touring schedule after a string of performances raised concerns among fans of the 82-year-old singer.

The Motown legend has spent the past several months performing solo and alongside fellow music icon Smokey Robinson. According to TMZ, Knight appeared confused at times during some shows, stared off into the distance and relied heavily on her backup singers for vocals.

One of the more concerning moments reportedly came during Knight’s July 25 performance at the Hollywood Bowl. According to the outlet, people involved with the tour had expressed concerns to Knight’s team before the show and questioned whether she should take the stage.

During her performance of the classic “Midnight Train to Georgia,” Knight reportedly turned her back to the audience and began walking offstage. When a backup singer reached for her arm, she pulled away and continued moving toward the exit.

A source also told TMZ that Knight’s April Las Vegas performance with Robinson was even more concerning. Some people working on the tour reportedly believe she may be showing signs of dementia, although Knight has not been diagnosed with the condition.

Knight’s husband and manager, William McDowell, acknowledged that she has “good days and bad,” but said performing remains important to her. “No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing,” McDowell told the outlet.

Some fans who attended Knight’s August 18 Detroit concert have already questioned whether she should continue touring. After she took several breaks backstage and appeared exhausted, some concertgoers reportedly left before the show ended, per TMZ.

Reactions to the performance video reflected how divided fans have become over the question. “Midnight train need to make its last stop we gotta let our stars rest,” one person wrote. 

“This is absolutely heartbreaking and disgusting! This needs to be stopped!” another commented. “This is sad to watch,” another person wrote. “Why is anyone allowing this????”

Others defended Knight and pointed out that she should be able to decide for herself whether she wants to continue performing.

“She is touring at 82 years old, put some respect on her name!!!! She is a legend,” one fan wrote. “Maybe this is what she wants. Some seasoned folks can’t be told what to do. And rightfully so,” another added.

It appears Knight is ready to make some changes to her schedule. McDowell told TMZ that he is working on building a facility near the couple’s North Carolina home that would allow her to perform without having to spend as much time traveling.

Knight also released a statement indicating that she plans to gradually reduce her performances while focusing on other parts of her life and career. 

“After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,” she said. “I’ll be spending more time on projects with my husband and visiting with my grandbabies and am looking forward to this new era.”

She reflected on the support she has received from fans throughout her many years in music.

“I’d like to take a moment, in advance, to thank all my fans over this last three quarters of a century for making a little girl’s dream come true and supporting her every step of the way,” she added. “I am immensely grateful to all of you and send my eternal love back to you.”

Her decision comes after more than 70 years as a performer, but Knight isn’t ready to say goodbye to the stage just yet. “I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road,” she said.
