1989 Song by Public Enemy Ranked the Second 'Greatest Song of All Time'

Public Enemy’s 1989 anthem “Fight the Power” has been ranked No. 2 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, placing the landmark hip-hop track among the most celebrated songs in music history.

Written by Carlton Ridenhour, Eric Sadler, Hank Shocklee and Keith Shocklee, “Fight the Power” was created for Spike Lee’s 1989 film Do the Right Thing. The song became a major part of the movie and later appeared in an extended version on Public Enemy’s 1990 album Fear of a Black Planet.

The track was more than a hit song. It became a powerful statement about race, culture, freedom and the abuse of power. With Chuck D delivering sharp lyrics, Flavor Flav adding his distinct voice, and the Bomb Squad building a dense mix of beats, horns and samples, “Fight the Power” created a sound that matched its message.

Rolling Stone described the song as a major work of racial revolution and Black pride. It noted that Spike Lee asked Public Enemy to write an anthem for Do the Right Thing, a film that dealt with white supremacy and racial tension.

The result was exactly what the film needed.

Whenever the character Radio Raheem appeared with his boombox, “Fight the Power” played throughout the movie. The repeated use of the song helped connect Public Enemy’s message directly to the story on screen and introduced the anthem to a much wider audience.

According to uDiscover Music, much of the song’s lyrics came to Chuck D while he was flying over Italy during a European tour with Run-D.M.C.

He later recalled writing a large part of the song on the plane, drawing from the world around him and the social tensions taking place in New York.

The finished track was filled with references to African-American culture, civil rights, Black pride, music and history. Its lyrics challenged listeners to think about who society chooses to honor.

One of the song’s best-known lines is: “Most of my heroes don’t appear on no stamps.”

“Fight the Power” was released as a single in 1989 and reached No. 1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. It also reached No. 20 on the Hot R&B Singles chart and was named the best single of 1989 by The Village Voice in its Pazz & Jop critics’ poll.

The song later earned a nomination for Best Rap Performance at the 32nd GRAMMY Awards. In 2018, it was added to the GRAMMY Hall of Fame.

Its legacy also continued through major rankings. In 2001, “Fight the Power” was placed at No. 288 on the “Songs of the Century” list compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Fight the Power” also continued to reach new audiences years after its original release. An updated version was performed at the 2020 BET Awards by Chuck D and Flavor Flav alongside Nas, Rapsody and Black Thought.

More than three decades after it was released, Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” remains the group’s best-known song and one of hip-hop’s most recognized anthems.

There’s no shortage of new projects on the docket for Disney parks around the globe. But few are as highly anticipated as the upcoming Villains-themed land at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Since it was first revealed in 2024, it’s been a secret kept near and dear to those on the inside…until now.

And it’s becoming clear that Disney isn’t afraid to dig deep into its rich history for the pioneering new land.

At this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the company revealed details on the enigmatic new land during the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress Disney Experiences Panel.

And as a hardcore Disneyphile, I couldn’t be any more ecstatic. What was revealed during the star-fueled panel was something much grander yet nuanced, with this move showing the full potential of Walt Disney’s vision and tapping into the company’s roots.

The presentation kicked off with the illusive “Magic Mirror” seemingly materializing out of nowhere on stage before Disney Experiences  Chairman Thomas Mazloum took to the stage among immense chatter. And the vision all became clear when President & Chief Creative Officer  Bruce Vaughn and  Executive Creative Director  Caroline May from Walt Disney Imagineering joined.

Magic Mirror on the wall, which land will be the most magnificent of them all?

Villains Land will officially be known as…Villains Land, seamlessly fitting in with the rest of the park’s lands, like Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. “Even though the vibe  couldn’t be more different, with Villains Land bringing a devious and dark ‘magic’ to the Magic Kingdom, it still manages to be cohesive with the storytelling of the broader park,” the company later explained on Disney Parks Blog.

Disney shared that the size and scale is comparable to its acclaimed Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

For Villains Land, The Walt Disney Company will be bringing things all the way back to its roots, fairytales, diving into some of its earliest creations, like the 1937 animated feature Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs.

The bravest of souls who dare enter the land will find themselves in the Dark Forest.

“In many fairytales, the real journey begins when you stray from the safe path and instead turn towards the vast, foreboding forest” Disney Parks Blog shared. “If you dare enter the forest of Villains Land, you may soon come across a Wishing  Well  that’s been torn asunder.  Under most circumstances, a Wishing Well would indicate pure and good energy at work, but something dark happened to this one.  Once upon a time, someone made an evil wish here – a wish so evil it corrupted the stone and broke open the structure, spreading the Well’s poisoned magic throughout the forest.”

Along the way, familiar characters from Walt Disney Animation Studios will be part of the journey while the overarching story will be a brand-new, fresh take on iconic villains. During the presentation, Disney showed imagery of iconic antagonists, like Cruella De Vil and Dr. Facilier.

And speaking of those villains, they just can’t seem to resist temptation.

Within the story, the power of the Wishing Well proves too strong for the villains, who come one by one to try and harness its power. “These mighty fortresses and gleaming palaces not only reflect the personality of the villains who own them, they invite guests into a tantalizing treasure trove of treats, trinkets, and more temptations.” Disney had previously shared that with the use of all these villains the storytelling possibilities are endless.

“Villains Land is such an exciting addition to the Magic Kingdom, because it allows us to expand the park’s storytelling in a way that feels both fresh and true to its legacy and fairytale roots,” Caroline told Disney Parks Blog. “We have an incredibly talented and passionate team working behind the scenes every day to make sure this land captures the power, magic, and mischievous (and sometimes humorous) spirit of the Disney Villains, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see that fans are just as excited as we are for what’s ahead.”

And excitement is an understatement as Disney isn’t relying on the newest, flashiest IP, but the classics. Disney shared that in developing the land they went directly to the animation source material. “By grounding Villains Land in the look and feel of these classic animated characters, the experience becomes even more immersive, entertaining, and filled with that dramatic flair guests know and love,” the company shared on Disney Parks Blog.

Beyond what Disney is calling a “character-driven philosophy,” Walt Disney Imagineering shared insights and photos from research trips. The land will seek inspiration from Art Nouveau and Modernism styles, notably with characteristics of “rich color palettes, swirling natural patterns and ominous proportions.” Their journeys took the team to Paris, France and Barcelona, Spain. It was during these trips that Imagineering coined the term “Conjured Architecture,” and will use that philosophy to serve as a guide for the overall style and aesthetic of the land.

We can’t help but feel a little touch of Walt Disney, who himself traveled all over Europe and used those trips as inspiration for his early animated films.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a new theme park land without exciting attractions. And Villains Land will be anchored by two. A Maleficent coaster, which will include elements Disney has never attempted before, will send riders on an exhilarating journey around the sinister character’s mountaintop fortress. The second will be a Mirror Realm dark ride, hosted by the Magic Mirror, which will send the brave into the Evil Queen’s catacombs and will use both special effects and physical set pieces to bring iconic villains to life.

The development is particularly exciting for Disney parks fans who have always yearned for more villainous representation in the parks. And it has us feeling rotten to the core.

In the meantime, we’ll keep our eyes peeled on what’s happening beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as we await the Magic Mirror to reveal more details (fingers crossed for an epic character dining experience).

And what else do park fans have to look forward to? A whole lot of groundbreaking projects. This includes the upcoming refreshed Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park, a Monsters, Inc.– themed land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the revival of the Yeti at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park and much more.

Richard Grieco, the actor and model who skyrocketed to fame in the role of Detective Dennis Booker on 21 Jump Street, has ditched that legendary spiky hair he was known for in the ’90s.

Grieco, 61, was known for his role on 21 Jump Street and its spinoff, Booker. He later parlayed his TV fame into a film career, starring as Bugsy Siegel in Mobsters alongside a young Patrick Dempsey and Christian Slater. He even started a singing career in the ’90s, before finding his place in the art world. But in a new video shared on his Instagram page, Grieco is likely unrecognizable from the star you once knew. While his spiky hair used to be his trademark, he now sports long, black hair that’s usually tucked under a hat or a kerchief.

What’s Richard Grieco Up To These Days?

In February of last year, Deadline announced that Grieco would join Randy Charach and David Chokachi in Vanished, a new action-thriller from director Jared Cohn. However, it looks like the actor is quite dedicated to his art career these days. On his personal website, Grieco shares that he began his painting work, which he refers to as “abstract emotionalism,” about 20 years ago to capture the emotions that his other talents couldn’t express.

“My work is capturing lightning in a bottle; it’s a pure, unbridled emotion. I am a painter who puts his emotions on canvas, and honestly, my work is as much a part of my life as breathing,” Grieco shares on his website.

His performances were powerful without ever feeling showy. And he had a way of making even larger-than-life characters feel deeply human. On August 28, the anniversary of his death, his work and the wisdom he shared during his too-short life continues to resonate.

Boseman was born on November 29, 1976, in Anderson, South Carolina, the youngest of three sons. His mother, Carolyn, was a nurse, and his father, Leroy, worked for an agricultural conglomerate while also running a side business as an upholsterer. As a child, Boseman witnessed racism firsthand, including being subjected to racial slurs while walking down the street. But he also grew up surrounded by examples of determination and creativity that would help shape the artist he would become.

His path to acting was not immediate. In high school, Boseman was a serious basketball player, but after a friend and teammate was shot and killed, he turned toward storytelling. He enrolled at Howard University intending to become a director, and an acting class with actor and director Phylicia Rashad helped open a new door. When Boseman and his classmates were accepted into the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, they struggled to afford the trip. Rashad helped secure financial support, with assistance from Denzel Washington.

After graduating from Howard, Boseman moved to New York, where he immersed himself in theater. He wrote and directed plays, taught acting at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem and spent years building his craft before Hollywood fully recognized his extraordinary talent.

His breakthrough came in his thirties. He was 35 when he played Jackie Robinson in 42. From there, he went on to embody James Brown in Get On Up, Thurgood Marshall in Marshall and, most famously, King T’Challa in Black Panther.

Black Panther became a cultural phenomenon that transformed Boseman into an international star and made T’Challa an enduring symbol of pride, strength and possibility. The film was groundbreaking as the first major superhero movie with an African protagonist and a majority Black cast. And Boseman understood the responsibility of bringing the character to the screen.

Audiences revered him not only for his talent, but for the grace and dignity he seemed to carry both onscreen and off. “He made everyone feel loved, heard and seen,” wrote his Black Panther co-star, Danai Gurira. “He played great, iconic roles because he possessed inside of himself that connection to greatness to be able to so richly bring them to life. He had a heroic spirit, and marched to the beat of his own drum; hence his excellence as an artist and the incredible courage and determination as he faced life’s challenges; while still guiding us all.”

His death in 2020, at just 43, prompted an extraordinary outpouring of grief from fans, fellow artists and public figures. He continues to be revered as an actor, role model and cultural force unlike any other. Barack Obama wrote after he died, “Chadwick came to the White House to work with kids when he was playing Jackie Robinson,” offered the former President. “You could tell right away that he was blessed. To be young, gifted, and Black; to use that power to give them heroes to look up to; to do it all while in pain – what a use of his years.”

We didn’t have to worry about paying bills or buying a home; we weren’t being endlessly bombarded with a barrage of breaking news; and the vibes were undeniably immaculate. Lisa Frank was all the rage, a wild Friday night meant taking a trip to Blockbuster or Chuck E. Cheese, and the biggest crisis we had was missing the ice cream truck. Ah, the good old days.

But just because we might be looking back on our childhood with rose-colored glasses doesn’t have to mean our best days are behind us. Adulthood unlocks an entire world of possibilities—like making your own ice cream from scratch and eating it all in one sitting if you want to. Besides, no one wants to see yours truly frantically chasing after an ice cream truck just to get a strawberry shortcake bar, especially when making your own at home is as easy as tossing everything into a blender.

Whether you turn it into bars, make ice cream sandwiches or just eat it straight out of the container, you’ll definitely want to save this recipe. Here’s how to make Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream so good you won’t have to chase the ice cream truck ever again.

What’s so great about this recipe is that for the most part you likely already have all the ingredients you need on hand.

Additionally, the milk powder and xanthan gum are optional add-ins that help enhance the consistency of the finished product, but they can be omitted without any noticeable impact.

You can also scale this recipe up or down to make a larger batch if needed.

To make things easy, we broke the ingredient list down into three parts so you can easily follow along and refer back as you go. Here’s everything you’ll need to make Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream.

The Ice Cream Base requires 2 cups of heavy whipping cream, 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk, ¼ cup of light corn syrup, ¼ cup of whole milk, 1 Tbsp of vanilla bean paste, 2 Tbsp of granulated sugar, 1 tsp of salt, 2 Tbsp of dry milk powder (optional), and ⅛ tsp of xanthan gum (optional).

The Strawberry Purée requires 1 cup of fresh strawberries, ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice, and a splash of water.

The Strawberry Crunch requires 1 ½ cups of freeze-dried strawberries, about 10 Golden Oreos, 1 Tbsp of melted butter, and a pinch of salt.

Aside from the ingredients listed above, you’ll also need a metal loaf pan or bowl, a blender, an ice cream scoop, and popsicle molds if using.

How to Make Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream

Gathering your ingredients is probably the most complicated part of this recipe (aside from waiting) because everything comes together in a snap with the help of a variable blender. I used Ninja’s new 4-in-1 CrushBoss kitchen system, but any variable speed blender will do.

To start, whip your heavy cream in the blender pitcher until stiff peaks form, scraping down the sides as needed. Depending on your blender, this can take about 3 to 4 minutes. Next, add in the sweetened condensed milk, corn syrup, whole milk and vanilla bean paste, stirring to combine. In a separate small bowl, combine the sugar, salt, milk powder and xanthan gum (if using), then add to the blender and process everything together for about 30 to 45 seconds.

If you choose to omit the milk powder and xanthan gum, simply add the salt and sugar directly to the other ingredients and blend until just combined. You’re looking for everything to be mixed without any lumps, with the consistency of a soft whipped cream. Set the mixture aside for now.

With your ice cream base squared away, to make the strawberry purée, simply place the strawberries, lemon juice and water into your blender, and blend until smooth. From there, you can strain the mixture to remove any large chunks or seeds, then gently fold in a third of the prepared ice cream base to lighten it.

Once everything is mixed, add the strawberry-flavored base to a metal bowl with the remaining ⅔ of your ice cream base, and gently mix to create a striking pink-and-white swirl.

Cover and place in the freezer for 6 hours or overnight. Alternatively, you could spoon the mixture into popsicle molds to stay true to the original treat inspiration.

Now that you’ve tackled making the actual ice cream (which only took about 15 minutes, btw), you can focus on making the iconic strawberry crunch topping that actually tastes like the real deal. Simply place the freeze-dried strawberries into the blender and pulse until it resembles fine sand. Transfer the mixture to a separate bowl, then add the Golden Oreos and pulse until they’re broken down into small pieces. Add the cookie crumbs to the strawberries, pour in the melted butter and mix to combine.

From there, you can set the strawberry crunch topping aside until you’re ready to serve, or do what I did and take your partially frozen ice cream base out of the freezer and fold in about a third of the strawberry crunch mixture before letting it set overnight.

If you choose to make popsicles, you’ll want to let them set completely before rolling them in the crunch topping.

What I Thought of Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream

Just in case you weren’t counting, to make this take on the ice cream truck staple I only used a blender, a spatula, and maybe one or two bowls—that alone makes it a winner in my book. It was effortless to throw together, even on a weeknight, and required minimal cleanup and no special equipment. The only real work was gathering everything and following the steps in order. Clearly, I’m obsessed with the technique, but it delivered big on the iconic Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream Bar flavor too.

It was sweet and strawberry-forward without being cloying, and, surprisingly, the strawberry crunch folded in retained much of its texture. It was like finding a little surprise in each bite. The ice cream came out silky smooth and velvety, without any trace of iciness, and it was rich in a way that almost felt like it was made out of custard.

In just a few words, this is everything a strawberry shortcake bar should be. That said, although I’d be hard-pressed to say this recipe couldn’t get any better, I’m already brainstorming ways to upgrade my next batch after I finish this one off in two days.

3 Tips for Making Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream

This is already a pretty solid recipe, but there are a few ways to kick it up another notch and maximize your ’90s nostalgia experience.

1. Don’t skimp on the salt.

Because this recipe features sugar in various forms, you’ll want to balance it out by being a little more generous with the salt. Not only does salt help temper some of the sweetness, but it also helps eke out more nuanced strawberry flavors. It also helps cool your ice cream base down faster, which can help prevent ice crystals from forming, giving you a smoother final product.

2. Use the right blender.

While you can definitely get away with using a standard blender, having a variable blender that lets you adjust the speed gives you greater control over how your ice cream actually turns out.

You can also make this recipe with a stand or hand mixer, but you may need to adjust the timing a bit.

3. Experiment with flavors.

Although we can’t say enough about how delicious this recipe is on its own, you can definitely amp it up by roasting your strawberries or folding in balsamic glaze for a more adult take on the classic. You could also add some spice to the strawberry crunch, or toast it to give it a more caramelized flavor. And as far as serving it, you can sandwich a scoop between buttery sugar cookies, stack it high on a waffle cone, or simply enjoy it by the spoonful from the container.

Final Thoughts

Once you’ve got the technique down, you can use the ice cream base to make pretty much any flavor you can imagine. Guitar Legend Known as 'Slowhand' Just Recreated Some of His Most Iconic Guitars—and They're for Sale

Eric Clapton is giving guitar fans a chance to get their hands on pieces inspired by some of the most important instruments of his career.

Guitar Center unveiled its 2026 Exclusive Crossroads Guitar Collection on Aug. 26, a limited-edition lineup created in collaboration with Clapton, 81, and guitar brands Martin, Fender and Ernie Ball.

The collection arrives ahead of the 2026 Crossroads Guitar Festival in Austin, Texas, and there’s a meaningful reason behind the collaboration: proceeds support Crossroads Centre Antigua, the addiction treatment center Clapton founded in 1998.

For Clapton, the guitars represent something much deeper than collectibles.

“Music has always been my most reliable source of inspiration, or salvation,” he said in a statement. “These guitars are sacred things to me.”

Eric Clapton’s Most Famous Guitars Inspired the Collection

The new collection builds on more than two decades of collaboration between Clapton, Guitar Center and the Crossroads organization.

Their relationship dates back to 2004, when Guitar Center purchased several of Clapton’s historic instruments at the Crossroads Guitar Auction. Among them were his famous Blackie Fender Stratocaster, his Cream-era Gibson ES-335 and a Martin 00-21 once owned by George Harrison.

Those instruments eventually became part of Guitar Center’s Legends Collection, which is displayed at the company’s Hollywood flagship store.

Clapton’s Blackie Stratocaster has proven particularly influential. A Guitar Center recreation of the legendary guitar sold out in just four hours after its 2006 release.

More recently, the exclusive Gibson Custom Eric Clapton 1958 Les Paul sold out in less than 12 hours following its 2025 debut.

The 2026 collection continues that tradition with handcrafted acoustic guitars, recreations inspired by Clapton’s electric guitars and accessories.

Guitar Center Is Bringing Clapton’s Guitars to the Crossroads Festival

The collection will also be showcased at The Guitar Center Experience during the 2026 Crossroads Guitar Festival at Austin’s Moody Center.

Festivalgoers will be able to see the new guitars up close, shop exclusive merchandise and explore instruments from brands including Fender, Gibson, Martin, PRS and Ernie Ball.

Two particularly important guitars from Guitar Center’s Legends Collection will also be on display: Clapton’s original Blackie Stratocaster and his Cream-era Gibson ES-335.

The weekend will include another major guitar-world moment, as Paul Reed Smith, founder of PRS Guitars, is inducted into Guitar Center’s RockWalk.

And John Mayer will debut his limited-edition PRS Silver Sky “Crossroads” model onstage during the festival.

For Clapton fans, the collection offers something beyond a piece of rock memorabilia. Every purchase helps support the treatment center that has been part of the guitarist’s philanthropic work for nearly three decades, giving these instruments a connection to both Clapton’s musical history and his life away from the stage.

This new version is sports-specific, however, as a partnership between The New York Times and The Athletic.

On July 4, 1988, Australian singer and actress Kylie Minogue released her debut album, Kylie. While she was best known at that time for her role as Charlene Mitchell on the long-running soap opera Neighbours, singing a cover of “The Loco-Motion” with several of her co-stars changed her fate.

The Cover Song That Changed Everything

Shortly after seeing her perform “The Loco-Motion” in 1986, producer Greg Petherick convinced her to re-record it, and then began submitting it to record labels. It worked. The single’s buzz, paired with her Neighbours fame, was enough to convince Mushroom Records to sign her in 1987. A year later, she released her debut album, Kylie, and the rest, as they say, is history.

While Minogue has undeniably had an incredible music career, her status as an icon was cemented in 2020 by the Guinness World Records. That year, it was announced that the “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” singer was the first female artist with five consecutive decades of No. 1 albums in the UK.

The album that secured the record was Disco, released during the pandemic. It became her eighth No. 1 album in the UK with 55,000 sales in the opening week, the best she’d done in a decade. Of course, that first No. 1 album, Kylie, had also earned her many accolades, including becoming the first album by a female solo artist to sell more than two million copies in the UK. It also earned her the title of youngest female artist with a No. 1 album in the UK, a title she held until Avril Lavigne dethroned her in 2003.

Despite only reaching No. 53 on the Billboard 200, she debuted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart before reaching No. 1, a position it held for six weeks. Along with Queen, Michael Jackson, and Dire Straits, Kylie was the UK’s fifth best-selling album of the 1980’s.

How to Play Strands

According to the New York Times, here’s exactly how to play Strands:

Find theme words to fill the board.

Theme words stay highlighted in blue when found.
Drag or tap letters to create words. If tapping, double-tap the last letter to submit.
Theme words fill the board entirely. No theme words overlap.

Find the “spangram.”

The spangram describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.
The spangram highlights in yellow when found.
An example spangram with corresponding theme words: PEAR, FRUIT, BANANA, APPLE, etc.

Need a hint?

Find non-theme words to get hints.
For every three non-theme words you find, you earn a hint.
Hints show the letters of a theme word. If there is already an active hint on the board, a hint will show that word’s letter order.

Something I look forward to every summer is reading books while sitting on my apartment’s “balcony.” By balcony, I mean my ancient fire escape. And by sitting on it, I mean opening my window and awkwardly perching on the window tracks, for fear of actually putting my body weight on the rickety fire escape.

And after doing this periodically throughout the summer, it’s safe to say my window—and the surrounding area—typically accumulates some significant dirt and dust. So before I shut my windows for fall this year, I thought it would be a good idea to do a deep clean.

That said, what exactly should I be cleaning for fall before closing my windows?

To find out, we spoke with Scott Benson, Director of Operations at The Cleaning Authority, a national residential cleaning company. Not only did Benson share the seven things you should clean before closing your windows at the end of summer, but he also shared exactly what products you need and what methods you should follow. Keep reading for his insights!

Why You Need to Clean Your Windows Before Fall

“By the end of summer, your windows have likely accumulated months of pollen, dust and dirt,” Benson tells Parade.

“The same is often true for window tracks, screens, blinds and curtains, especially in homes where windows are frequently opened to let in fresh air,” he continues. “Cleaning these areas before cooler weather arrives provides a seasonal reset. It helps prevent buildup from sitting for months and becoming more difficult to remove, reduces allergens in the home, and allows your windows to bring in more of the natural light you’ll appreciate during the winter months.”

7 Things a Pro Cleaner Recommends Cleaning Before You Close Your Windows for Fall 1. Window glass

Benson is starting off with the most obvious part of the window: the glass.

To clean your window glass, you’ll need: water, white vinegar, a spray bottle and three clean microfiber cloths. To get started, simply wipe the glass down with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any dust.

“Next, mix half a cup of vinegar with 4 cups of warm water in a spray bottle,” he says. “Spray the vinegar and water mixture onto the window. Use a clean microfiber cloth to rub in the solution, then use a new cloth to dry off the window.”

2. Window tracks

Window tracks can accumulate endless dust and dirt, and they need a deep clean before fall. To clean your window tracks, you’ll need: a vacuum, a spray bottle, water, vinegar, baking soda, an old toothbrush and a microfiber cloth.

“First, vacuum out as much loose dirt and debris as possible from the tracks,” Benson explains. Then, “fill a spray bottle with equal parts water and distilled white vinegar. Next, sprinkle baking soda in the window tracks and spray with the vinegar solution.”

After letting this sit and fizz for around five minutes, “take an old toothbrush and scrub the tracks to loosen any stuck-on grime. Wipe clean with a microfiber cloth.”

3. Windowsills

“Cleaning windowsills is very simple,” says Benson. All you’ll need for this is two microfiber cloths, dish soap and water.

“First, vacuum any loose dust and debris. To make it easier, do this step while vacuuming any loose dirt from the window tracks,” he says.

Then, “take a microfiber cloth, squirt a few drops of dish soap onto it, and wet it completely. Wring out any excess water, then wipe down the windowsill. Dry with a separate, clean microfiber cloth.”

4. Blinds

“Blinds often have multiple sides and shapes, so they can sometimes be a hassle to clean,” Benson says. The best way to clean them is with a microfiber cloth and a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and water.

“Take a mixture of half vinegar and half water and use a microfiber cloth to swipe over each section of the blinds,” he says. “The embedded dust and dirt will come right off.”

5. Curtains

“For most curtains, it’s best to gently vacuum regularly to remove dust and pet hair, and to spot treat stains with mild dish soap,” says Benson. However, between seasons, it’s worth giving your curtains a more intense reset.

“For a deeper clean, check the care label to see whether the fabric is machine washable,” he advises. “If so, follow the instructions to wash at home. If not, you can hand-wash or take the curtains to the dry cleaners.”

6. Window screens

“Window screens can be delicate,” says Benson. So, rather than cleaning your screens while they’re still in the windows, he recommends carefully removing them, and laying them on a flat surface. To clean the screens, you’ll need a microfiber cloth, dish soap and a sink or hose.

“Take a microfiber cloth, add a few drops of dish soap and wet the cloth,” he advises. “Gently scrub the screen on both sides, rinse, and let it air dry completely. Depending on the size of your screen, you can rinse with a hose or in your sink.”

If the screens are still gunky after rinsing, try scrubbing them with a soft-bristled brush. “Just be sure to scrub gently to keep your screen intact,” Benson warns.

7. Nearby lamps

“Many people have lamps near their windows, especially in living rooms,” says Benson. And the best way to clean them is often with a lint roller!

“The lampshades can easily collect dust and pollen and, in many cases, just need a simple refresh,” he says. “To remove dust, use a lint roller and work from top to bottom for quick removal.”
