While literary classics tend to be regaled as the very best on any given bookshelf, there’s something to be said about modern masterful works. For instance, the publication Collider highlighted books that were relatively recently published that have pages full of excellent prose, compelling plots, and remarkable characters.

Collider‘s ranking, titled “The 8 Greatest Books of the Last 26 Years,” included novels like Gillian Flynn‘s Gone Girl from 2012, 2003’s The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, published in 2016. According to Collider, the “greatest book of the last 26 years” is the 2008 Hugo Award-winning Chinese science fiction novel, The Three-Body Problem, written by author Liu Cixin.

The Three-Body Problem has a score of 4.08 out of 5 from 533,897 readers on Goodreads.

Liu Cixin Shared His Thoughts About the Popularity of ‘The Three-Body Problem’

In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, Cixin, a computer engineer, said that he doesn’t know why The Three-Body Problem and its subsequent sequels, The Dark Forest (2008) and Death’s End (2010), resonated with so many readers and critics.

“Frankly speaking, I don’t know even know the reasons for the success of The Three-Body Problem trilogy. I don’t find the reasons given by some researchers, such as the novels have helped the west to understand China and so on, to be convincing,” stated Cixin in an email for the interview. “I don’t think that the success of The Three-Body Problem in the west is due to the fact that the novels are Chinese science fiction novels, but rather the fact that they are science fiction novels that treat human beings as a whole.”

David Benioff Explained Why He Wanted to Adapt ‘The Three-Body Problem’ Into a Netflix Series

The Three-Body Problem became the source of inspiration for a 2024 Netflix series, 3 Body Problem, which has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 79 percent. The series, created by television writer Alexander Woo and HBO Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, consists of one season with eight episodes.

During a 2024 Netflix panel with the cast and crew, Benioff explained why he, Weiss, and Woo were interested in adapting Cixin’s material.

“One of the things that really appealed to us about the books and why we wanted to adapt it is because it’s not your traditional evil aliens envading,” said the writer.

He also noted that the aliens in Cixin’s book and 3 Body Problem are “not evil,” but rather refugees.

“They’re coming because their world is falling apart. This is a science fiction story, it’s about aliens coming to possibly conquer earth, but it has to start in a very grounded place. That’s what was essential to us because in the books, that’s really what drew us in,” said Benioff during the 2024 panel.

The View is celebrating three decades on air.

The daytime talk show released a promo for the 30th season on YouTube on Thursday, Aug. 27. The show is returning next month after a brief summer hiatus.

The teaser kicked off by sharing a clip of Barbara Walters when she created the show in August 1997.

“Take a little time to enjoy The View,” she said in the video. Walters died in 2022 at 93 years old.

The promo also features appearances by co-hosts: Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farrah Griffin. There are no changes in the lineup for the upcoming season.

“Now, it’s the 30th season of The View, daytime’s No. 1 talk show,” a narrator said. Each of the women asks viewers to “take a little time to enjoy” The View.

“Thirty years on The View, really?” co-host Behar said. “I feel like I’ve been here since my prom!”

The landmark season is expected to be unlike any other. The promo says audiences will be “surprised” by the season premiere.

In the video, The View calls itself “Daytime’s #1 Most Watched Talk Show.” ABC shared that the series was ranked No. 1 in both households and total viewership among daytime network talk shows during the last week of the previous season, season 29.

The View returns to TV on Tuesday, Sept. 8, on ABC and is available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

Following the news of Dolly Parton‘s death, a resurfaced video of the late country star having an impromptu sing-along with Kenny Rogers is now considered “a wonderful gift.”

On Thursday, CNN anchor Bianna Golodryga shared the video, in which she asked the two to sing their hit “Islands In the Stream” during a 2013 ABC News interview. While Rogers, who died in 2020, may have been a bit reluctant to belt out the tune, Parton herself was game and eventually invited Golodryga to join in.

And Golodryga’s followers simply could not get over it:

• “Girl how [the f—] did [you] hold it together I would’ve melted if they both were in front of me let alone singing their best duo song,” one said.
• “What a wonderful gift you received!” added another of the song that the two music icons released in 1983.
• “How many people walking the face of the earth can say they sung with Dolly AND Kenny Rogers???? Amazing!” a third said.

Coincidentally, the song is also what Parton last posted about, 10 days before she died, to celebrate the hit’s 43rd anniversary.

“43 years of ‘Islands In the Stream!’ 💖 @_kennyrogers,” Parton simply captioned the clip of footage that was taken of the two in 1988.

Following the news of her passing on Tuesday, a post by Kenny Rogers’ family and team, shared to his official Instagram account, paid tribute to the “9 to 5” singer and their famed collaboration.

“When the two of you sang about being islands in the stream who together had found peace unknown, having real love for each other as true friends who would always stand by each other, and how you just can’t make old friends, it was always as genuine as it could possibly be…coming straight from the heart and reflecting what you both felt for each other,” the statement read, in part.

A video of the two icons singing together was also shared by the account.

According to Billboard, “Islands in the Stream” topped multiple charts for weeks. It also earned the singers an Academy of Country Music Award, an American Music Award, and a Grammy nomination.

Some rock classics are so notable that, even though they never quite claimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, they remain legendary staples of the genre. That is the case for 10cc’s iconic hit “I’m Not in Love,” a song that continues to persevere long after its release.

Released in May 1975 as the second single from their third studio album, The Original Soundtrack, “I’m Not in Love” quickly stood out to soft-rock lovers as something special. Upon its arrival, it became an international sensation, peaking at No. 2 on the U.S. Hot 100 and No. 1 in the U.K., Canada and Ireland.

Its major global appeal was reflected in not just the track’s chart success, but in its sales as well. The song was certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for selling over 400,000 copies in the U.K., and it is estimated to have sold over 1.5 million units worldwide.

Aside from its commercial triumph, 10cc’s smash hit earned them three prestigious Ivor Novello Awards in 1976: Best Pop Song, International Hit of the Year and Most Performed British Work.

During an archival radio interview, vocalist Eric Stewart reflected on creating the song, sharing the immense confidence Mercury Records—who were attempting to sign them at the time—had in the track’s success.

“I said ‘Come and have a listen to what we’ve done, come and have a listen to this track,'” Stewart recalled telling the label. “And they came up, and they freaked. They said, ‘This is a masterpiece. How much money, what do you want? What sort of contract do you want? We’ll do anything.’” 

It turns out the label was right to believe in the song. Over 51 years later, “I’m Not in Love” still consistently ranks among the greatest rock songs ever made on major industry lists.

In 2024, Ultimate Classic Rock published its pick for the top 40 soft-rock songs of all time. Ranked alongside classics like Looking Glass’s 1972 song “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” at No. 20 and 17. Daryl Hall & John Oates’ 1975 track “Sara Smile” at No. 17, “I’m Not in Love” secured the No. 13 spot.

The song’s enduring relevance in the digital era attests to its status as a timeless rock staple. In the digital era, “I’m Not in Love” has bridged the gap across generations through social media and streaming platforms. On Spotify, the track has accumulated over 558 million streams—a significant feat for an oldie.

There are guitar players, and then there are guitar players who invent a musical language entirely their own.

Alex Lifeson belongs firmly in the latter category.

The legendary Rush guitarist turns 73 today, Aug. 27, and remarkably, more than five decades after helping create one of the most ferociously beloved bands in rock history, Lifeson is back onstage playing the music that made him a hero to generations of fans.

Born Aleksandar Živojinović in Fernie, British Columbia, in 1953, Lifeson grew up in Toronto and received his first guitar at 13 as a Christmas gift from his dad. (Later, Lifeson would be featured having an argument with his parents about his future in a documentary called Come on Children.)

By the summer of 1968, the teenager had co-founded the band that would become Rush. Geddy Lee soon joined him, followed by drummer and lyricist Neil Peart in 1974, creating one of rock’s greatest power trios. But they started like any other band, in basements.

“In September 1968, Rush played for around 20 people at a small hall in a church basement,” Lifeson said in a later interview about the band’s humble beginnings. “We played songs like ‘Spoonful,’ ‘Fire’ and ‘Born Under a Bad Sign,’ and got paid $10. Then we went to a nearby deli and ordered Cokes and French fries and started planning our future.”

While all three musicians would soon wow the world with their astonishing technical abilities and larger-than-life presence, Lifeson’s guitar playing lent Rush much of its enormous sonic landscape. Known for unusual chord structures, inventive effects, massive riffs and wildly imaginative solos, Lifeson somehow made a three-piece band sound far bigger than three people.

His guitar inspirations ranged from Pete Townsend to Jimi Hendrix, with Jimmy Page as his cited main influence.

“Jimmy Page was probably the biggest influence on me,” Lifeson reflected later in an interview. “I loved everything that he represented — his style, the looseness of his playing. I really learned an awful lot from him…probably more than anyone else.”

Lifeson’s work on songs including “Xanadu,” “2112,” “Limelight,” “Freewill” and “La Villa Strangiato” helped establish him as one of rock’s most distinctive guitarists. Rolling Stone ranked Lifeson No. 58 on its 2023 list of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, noting his influence on Metallica and other bands.

And Rush fans are famously devoted. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Rush in 2013, describes the trio as having a “legendary fanbase” drawn to the band’s technical brilliance, ambitious music, and stubborn authenticity. Lifeson, with his formidable musicianship and famously playful sense of humor, is as beloved as the day is long and has earned every inch of the pedestal on which he rightly stands.

But Lifeson’s creativity has not been exclusive to Rush. The experimental solo project Victor was released in 1996, and decades later, when Rush seemingly ended in 2015 after 40 years of enduring music due to Neil Peart’s sudden retirement, Lifeson diverted his talents into Envy of None, a band he formed with Andy Curran, Alfio Annibalini and Maiah Wynne. The group released its self-titled debut in 2022 and followed it with Stygian Wavz in 2025, allowing Lifeson to explore atmospheric and textural territory far removed from the progressive rock that made him famous.

Beyond his mainstay as a legendary guitarist, musician, and member of Rush, Lifeson is also a painter, golfer and licensed pilot. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada with his Rush bandmates in 1996 and received Canada’s Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 2012.

But perhaps the best birthday present of all is what is happening right now.

After Rush’s final tour in 2015 and Peart’s death in 2020, another Rush tour once seemed unimaginable. Yet Lifeson and Lee returned to the stage this summer for the Fifty Something tour, joined by drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Loren Gold in a celebration of more than 50 years of Rush music and to honor the life of their late friend.

At 73, Lifeson isn’t merely being celebrated for what he once did.

He’s still doing it.

The Oscar-winning star debuted a deeply personal tattoo at the Practical Magic 2 premiere in London on Wednesday, August 26. The delicate design on her left shoulder appeared to honor her children, Louis and Laila, and her late partner, Bryan Randall.

Bullock, 62, proudly showed off the fine-line tattoo, which features the letters “L” and “B” alongside the number “2.” The placement made the tribute visible above her strapless leopard-print Givenchy gown. Page Six reported that the ink pays tribute to Bullock’s children and also honors Randall.

The corseted dress featured a dramatic bow at the waist. Bullock completed the look with layered diamond necklaces, black strappy heels and softly waved hair. The glamorous outfit marked her return to a movie premiere as she prepares to appear in her first film in four years.

Fans didn’t waste any time speculating. One wrote: “I’m there with Jamile and I’m theorizing about Sandra Bullock’s new tattoo, and we came to the conclusion that the L squared is for Louis and Laila but the B is for Bryan.”

Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, have largely stayed out of the spotlight. Bullock met Randall in January 2015 after the photographer was hired to take pictures at Louis’ birthday party. The couple went on to build a life together and raise their blended family. Randall, 57, died in 2023 following a private three-year battle with ALS, his family said in a statement shared with People.

Three years after his death, Bullock broke her silence during an August appearance on the SmartLess podcast, revealing that Randall had asked her not to disclose his diagnosis.

“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she said. “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill, you know?”

Bullock said she began grieving years before his death because his illness changed their relationship long before he died. Bullock said Louis and Laila understood what was happening as Randall’s condition progressed.

“They could see. They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids,” Bullock said. “Very astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behavior that changes in all of us.”

She explained that each child handled the experience differently and that she tried to respect their boundaries while making sure they felt supported.

The actress, 61, shared several photos on Instagram on Thursday, August 27, from her recent trip to Croatia. Leading the post with a gorgeous shot of her posing near a waterfall in a chic one-piece swimsuit, she wrote: “Highlight of the summer: the most amazing trip to Croatia with the best people 🇭🇷😍🏝️.”

David Byrne has exciting news for his fans and fellow cinephiles.

The former Talking Heads singer is adding to his discography of concert films with the upcoming Who Is The Sky?. The tour, which supported his album with the same name, took place all around the world throughout 2025 and 2026. The Who Is The Sky? concert film will follow Byrne’s 2023 concert film, American Utopia, shot by Spike Lee in early 2020.

The Who Is The Sky? project was filmed by The Brutalist director Brady Corbet over multiple nights in Byrne’s hometown of Baltimore in 70mm film. This wide, high-resolution motion picture format measures 70 millimeters across and is nearly twice the size of standard film (35mm). The movie is expected to showcase the huge multistage production that featured Byrne and his 13-member ensemble of musicians, singers and dancers.

“When Brady told me he wanted to shoot our show in 70 millimeter (70 millimeter!) I didn’t realize what a difference it would make until I saw some frames he sent me,” Byrne wrote in a statement. “He was right; it really does capture the wide-screen visual scope of the show. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

So far, no distribution or release details have been reported.

Byrne, born in Scotland but immigrated to Canada and then to the suburbs of Baltimore, started his music career in a high school band called Revelation. In 1975, he co-founded the Talking Heads in New York City and they released eight studio albums together, all with massive commercial and critical success. The Talking Heads were pioneers of the new wave music scene that took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with many of their music videos airing on MTV.

But by 1989, the Talking Heads split up, and Byrne went on to pursue a solo career. Since then, he has released 11 solo albums and many collaborative records with Brian Eno and St Vincent.

Currently, Byrne is finishing up the final North American leg of the Who Is The Sky? Tour, with multiple dates planned across the United States throughout the rest of this month until mid-September. From November 8-11, he will embark on his Sleeping Beauties Book Tour in the United Kingdom, which promotes his upcoming novel, Sleeping Beauties: Why Good Ideas Go Dormant and How They Wake Up, out Oct. 8.

Byrne is set to perform in San Diego on Thursday night, then at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles over the weekend. His upcoming concert schedule includes five nights in Mexico City over Labor Day weekend, then a stop in Saratoga Springs, New York, and a final night in New York City’s Forest Hills Stadium on Sept. 19.

Living in Santa Barbara, Corbett and Derek prefer a quieter pace of life.

“…Right now, if I’m home, I wake up, make coffee, feed the horses, feed the dogs, feed myself, go to my computer, work in the garden, swim in the pool for exercise and then feed horses, feed dogs, feed ourselves,” Derek told Variety back in 2020. “John and I watch Jeopardy while we eat and then we watch movies all night.”

Mike Myers is a comedy legend, and the star didn’t hesitate to embrace his silliness while dancing in a subway station.

Myers, 63, got his start on Saturday Night Live before launching a hugely successful film career with iconic films like Wayne’s World and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. While he’s currently at work on Shrek 5, the star decided to embrace his silly side off the clock while doing a bit of ballet in a Toronto subway station. As a street musician beautifully played the keyboards behind him, Myers leaped and hopped through the station in front of fellow commuters, who seemed completely clueless that the comedy legend was in front of them.

“Kinda chic to dance in the subway station,” Myers wrote on the video, in which the platinum-haired star wore camo pants, a T-shirt, and sneakers to show off his fancy footwork.

Like other news networks, CNN recently aired photos of the iconic singer, actress, and all-around star Dolly Parton following her death on August 25. But unlike other media outlets, CNN got it wrong.

The image that looked like Parton was actually of a tribute artist named Kelly Vohnn. Yes, that’s right. During a broadcast of ‘Laura Coates Live,’ the network displayed a photo of a Dolly Parton impersonator. 

Of course, like any of us would be, CNN is probably more than just a bit embarrassed by the on-air blunder. The network recently acknowledged the misstep publicly, telling The New York Post, “We regret the error and apologize to the Parton family.”

The photo of Vohnn was taken in December during a screening for the film Song Sung Blue in Las Vegas. While Vohnn didn’t see the initial broadcast, she later told The New York Post, “I started getting all these texts from friends saying that I was on CNN, and I couldn’t believe it.”

Vohnn also shared, “I was already heartbroken at losing Dolly because of how much she has given to me as a woman and an artist…But then to see these images of me on screen was just weird.”

She continued, slamming CNN’s error, “Somebody at CNN messed up and didn’t do their research. I felt so sorry and apologetic for Dolly, because over her career there are so many wonderful images and moments that they could have chosen from—and CNN just picked something not appropriate.” Vohnn added, “It was quite embarrassing, to be honest.” 

The tribute artist explained that she’s upfront about being an impersonator, saying, “To be clear, I have never represented myself as being Dolly ever in my life. I have always been known as a tribute act for her and many other stars.”

What did Dolly Parton’s fans think about CNN’s photo fail?

When The New York Post shared the story on social media, critics immediately jumped on the flub, writing on X, bashing the network’s mistake: “CNN can’t even get the easy stuff right. There’s a plague of incompetence at CNN,” and “Classic CNN. I’m shocked they apologized.”

But it wasn’t all clap-backs and savage swipes. Some Parton fans thought the golden-hearted queen of country would have gotten a kick out of the mistake, commenting on Instagram, “Dolly would have appreciated that flub!” and, “Dolly would have loved this.” 

What did Parton think about tribute acts? In a 2022 interview with Graham Norton, Parton spoke lovingly about her impersonators, saying, “I like that. I think it’s fun. I think it’s a great compliment!”

Some of rock music’s most famous tracks were written and recorded by young people. Fifty-six years ago, the psychedelic rock band Sugarloaf released “Green-Eyed Lady,” a major hit that continued to prove young artists could make massive industry breakthroughs.

Released in June 1970 as the lead single from their debut self-titled studio album, “Green-Eyed Lady” quickly became a hit. Upon its release, the song climbed up the Billboard Hot 100. Although it never claimed the No. 1 spot, it peaked at No. 3 on October 17. In total, the track spent 12 weeks charting, marking the band’s first major encounter with mainstream attention.

“Green-Eyed Lady” served as the catalyst for Sugarloaf’s career. Today, the band is commonly considered a two-hit wonder, mainly being remembered for “Green-Eyed Lady” and their 1974 single “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You”—which peaked at No. 9 in 1975.

Despite the lack of significant notoriety across the rest of their discography, “Green-Eyed Lady” continues to persevere as a memorable ’70s staple. In the streaming era, the track maintains its relevance among new generations, garnering over 19.1 million streams on Spotify alone.

Creating “Green-Eyed Lady”

“Green-Eyed Lady” was written by lead singer Jerry Corbetta with the help of producer J.C. Phillips and songwriter David Riordan when Corbetta was only 22 years old.

The song was inspired by his girlfriend at the time, Kathy Peacock, making for a deeply romantic tune centered around young love. Corbetta’s bandmates would frequently refer to Kathy by the affectionate nickname, “the green-eyed lady,” which was adopted as the song’s iconic title.

Corbetta’s ode to Kathy is a stunning lyrical work, honoring her as a loving force of nature. Lyrics like “Green-eyed lady, passion’s lady / Dressed in love, she lives for life to be / Green-eyed lady feels life I never see / Setting suns and lonely lovers free” showcase the beauty of young admiration, establishing its reputation as a beloved romantic rock track among listeners.

Sitting at nearly seven minutes in length, the single incorporates jazz influences and a driving organ arrangement that complements its romantic imagery perfectly. Its hypnotic groove maintains the momentum throughout the staggering 6-minute-and-52-second track. Its earmworm quality, defined by experimental instrumentation, made it an early classic on FM rock radio—a status it continues to keep today.

Maybe you’ve come across the Eisenhower Matrix (*wink wink*), or maybe you haven’t, and you’re curious about how it could help. The Classic Framework: What Is the Eisenhower Matrix?

Think you can guess who coined the Eisenhower Matrix, also known as the productivity matrix? Your guess is probably right.

“The Eisenhower Matrix is a methodology conceived by Dwight David Eisenhower while he was in the armed forces to manage his workload for optimum impact, and which he later used in the White House as President of the United States to manage his time there, too,” explains David Radin, CEO of Confirmed and a certified Dale Carnegie consultant who focuses on productivity and time management.

Basically, this matrix triages your to-do list.

“In its purest form, it separates all your required actions into four quadrants based on how important they are—that is, the level of impact they have on reaching your goals and how urgent they are, which can be thought of as how time-sensitive they are,” Radin explains.

He describes the quadrants like this:

• Quadrant 1: Do (Urgent & Important) — The task has lots of impact and a deadline.
• Quadrant 2: Decide or Delay (Important, Not Urgent) — You can put these tasks off.
• Quadrant 3: Delegate (Urgent, Not Important) — Not completing this task on time has some impact, but it’s not the most important, so you can hand it off.
• Quadrant 4: Delete or Disappear (Not Urgent, Not Important) — You can get rid of these tasks completely.

The Golden Mistake: Why You’re Confusing ‘Urgent’ With ‘Important’

The thing that many people get wrong about those quadrants, according to Radin, is focusing too much on quadrant one (Q1) and not enough on quadrant two (Q2). Basically, they don’t understand the “urgent” vs. “important” difference.

“It’s quite important to spend a large percentage of your focus in [quadrant one] because of the impact it has and the time-sensitivity of the activities there,” he says. “However, if you do it at the expense of quadrant two, you miss the opportunity to avoid your activities being pushed into urgency.” 

He goes on to explain that something could be urgent—aka, time-sensitive—but not important. For example, a deal on a product you want. The deal might end in two days (urgent), but that doesn’t mean that the product has a lot of value (important).

“We train people to first factor the importance, because that is what will impact their success,” he continues. “Then, determine the time frame in which those actions should be done… Another way to think of it: Act based on value; don’t react because a deadline is coming at you.”

The Individual Contributor Trap: What if You Have No One To Delegate To?

Now to the third quadrant: delegate. Let’s say you work solo and can’t delegate. Thankfully, that doesn’t mean you have to throw out this quadrant completely.

“If you have an assistant, that’s an easy delegation, but if you don’t, you need to find a resource with both the capability and enough time to get it done,” Radin suggests. “Be creative when thinking about how to delegate.”

That could also look like automation—with an online service, for example—or negotiation—with the client, perhaps.

Why Quadrant 2 Is the Real Secret to Long-Term Productivity

As mentioned, the ultimate goal is not to live in quadrant one, but to spend as much time as possible in quadrant two. This can eliminate stress and produce better results. 

“By spending time in quadrant two (important and non-urgent), you can keep your activities from becoming so urgent that you have to struggle to get them down,” Radin explains. “It’s often the quadrant of getting things done early, planning a strategy to get them done better or finding ways to be more efficient about getting them done.”

Years before Rod Stewart made “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” an international success, the aching ballad belonged to a very different corner of early-’70s rock.

Crazy Horse first recorded the song for the band’s self-titled 1971 debut album. Written and sung by guitarist Danny Whitten, “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” exposed a tender side of a group closely associated with the raw, electric sound of Neil Young. Within a few years, Stewart would recognize its potential and bring Whitten’s composition to millions more listeners.

Crazy Horse had emerged from the Los Angeles group the Rockets before becoming Young’s backing band.

Whitten was a crucial part of that transformation. His guitar and vocals appeared prominently on Young’s 1969 album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, but Crazy Horse also pursued music independently, releasing Crazy Horse in 1971 with contributions from musicians including Nils Lofgren and Jack Nitzsche.

“I Don’t Want to Talk About It” became one of Whitten’s defining compositions.

Built around heartbreak and the reluctance to revisit a painful relationship, the song favored emotional restraint over dramatic flourishes. Whitten’s fragile delivery gave the original an intimacy that would remain intact even as other performers reshaped it.

“Danny was a very soulful man and a good man and he was the one who got me in Crazy Horse,” recalled Lofgren years later in the book 1000 UK #1 Hits. “I loved his song, ‘I Don’t Want To Talk About It,’ and I think it is one of the greatest ballads ever. It has a very haunting lyric and put two lines into the song because Danny was so ill when he recorded it.”

Tragically, Whitten never saw how far the song would travel.

He struggled with drug addiction and died in 1972 at just 29 years old, little more than a year after Crazy Horse released the album.

His relatively small catalog nevertheless left a lasting impression, with “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” eventually becoming his best-known song.

Then came Rod Stewart.

“[Rod] was interested in seeing if Neil had a song he could do,” drummer Billy Talbot told Flowworker in 2025. “So Neil played one of our tracks to him and because he wasn’t interested in Rod Stewart doing a cover of his, he played something from the record he liked but knew Rod Stewart would never do – it might have been ‘Drive Back.’ It was a little odd, but he had a very beautiful woman with him [Britt Ekland] and that’s the main thing I remember. He then had a big hit with ‘I Don’t Want To Talk About It,’ Danny’s song. He might have got it at that session.”

Stewart recorded the ballad for his 1975 album Atlantic Crossing, bringing his famously raspy voice to Whitten’s melancholy lyrics. In 1977, it was released in the U.K. as a double A-side with “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” and the single climbed to No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart.

Stewart would return to the song throughout his career, including with a new rendition on 1989’s Storyteller collection. Other artists have embraced Whitten’s composition as well, further extending a legacy that began with Crazy Horse.

Fifty-five years after its original release, “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” remains a striking piece of Danny Whitten’s musical legacy. Rod Stewart may have carried the ballad around the world, but its emotional power was already there in Crazy Horse’s quietly affecting 1971 original.

Channing, 82, recently shared that she enjoys a quiet life in London these days. She relocated across the pond to Maine in 2019, following the death of her partner, producer Dan Gillham, in 2014.

After five weeks of testimony, the fate of Massachusetts mom Lindsay Clancy is now in the jury’s hands. Clancy, 36, is accused of killing her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan, at their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023.

Jurors began deliberating on Thursday, August 27, after opposing closing arguments about her mental state. Clancy has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.

What Did Prosecutors Argue in the Lindsay Clancy Trial?

According to a courtroom video shared by WCWB Channel 5 Boston, Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague acknowledged that Clancy was exhausted and depressed but argued that she planned the killings and understood her actions were wrong.

“It was a choice to take them with her. It was a horrible choice. It is a choice that we don’t want to think about that a mother could make, because that doesn’t make us feel safe or comfortable in this world,” Sprague said.

“But it’s a choice she made.” Sprague also rejected the defense’s criticism of Clancy’s medical care, arguing that broader failures in the mental health system were not on trial.

What Did the Defense Say About Postpartum Psychosis?

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis and had been a loving, devoted mother before her mental health deteriorated.

He blamed the medications she received and the treatment provided. Reddington also rejected the prosecution’s suggestion that Clancy’s attempt to take her own life was staged. “This woman lived for her kids,” he told jurors.

What Evidence Did Jurors Revisit During Closing Arguments?

Jurors heard conflicting testimony from medical experts. Clancy’s mother and sister said she became anxious, paranoid and suicidal after the birth of her third child.

Clancy sought help from several providers and admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital. Less than three weeks after her discharge, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, were strangled. Clancy then jumped from a second-floor window and remains paralyzed from the waist down.

Reddington displayed the book Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts and a wish box filled with hopes Clancy and then-husband Patrick Clancy had written for their children.

What Happens After the Lindsay Clancy Jury Deliberates?

Jurors must decide whether Clancy was criminally responsible and, if so, which charges were proven. A murder conviction could bring life in prison without parole. If Clancy is found not guilty because she lacked criminal responsibility, she could still be committed to a state mental health facility, where she has been receiving treatment since January 2023.
