Best-Selling Author's Classic Novel Ranked Among 'Books You Can't Live Without' on Goodreads

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 4:42pm

Some books fade with time, while others only seem to become more meaningful as new generations find them.

Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends has earned a spot on Goodreads' "Books You Can't Live Without" list, ranking No. 39 out of 1,651 books. The placement highlights the lasting popularity of a poetry collection that has remained a favorite for children, parents, teachers and longtime readers for decades.

Originally published in 1974, Where the Sidewalk Ends brought together Silverstein's poems and drawings in a collection filled with strange characters, playful humor and deeper messages tucked inside simple language. The book introduced readers to a world where imagination could stretch far beyond ordinary rules, turning everyday ideas into something funny, odd and unforgettable.

Silverstein was already known for his wide-ranging creativity before becoming one of the most beloved names in children's literature. Along with writing and illustrating books, he worked as a cartoonist, songwriter, poet and performer. His career included books such as The Giving Tree, A Light in the Attic and Falling Up, but Where the Sidewalk Ends became one of the works most closely tied to his legacy.

Silverstein once explained that his creative life was driven by the need to keep finding something new. In a 1968 interview with Stars & Stripes, he said, "I have to find change in my work all the time to have any satisfaction."

He also said he was drawn to shorter forms, adding that he liked writing children's books and poetry because he could create poems quickly. That approach helps explain the energy behind Where the Sidewalk Ends, a book filled with short, imaginative pieces that still feel alive decades later.

Goodreads describes the book as "outrageously funny and deeply profound," a phrase that helps explain why it has lasted so long. The poems are often silly on the surface, but many of them also capture the way children see the world, mixing curiosity, rebellion, humor and emotion in a way that still feels familiar years later.

That balance has helped Where the Sidewalk Ends remain more than just a childhood favorite. For many readers, the book became an early introduction to poetry that did not feel intimidating or overly serious. Silverstein's style made poems feel playful and accessible, while his drawings gave the collection a personality that was instantly recognizable.

The book's Goodreads ranking also reflects how often readers return to it later in life. With more than 1.5 million ratings on the platform, Where the Sidewalk Ends continues to stand out as one of Silverstein's most widely read and remembered works.

Decades after its release, Where the Sidewalk Ends still holds a rare place in popular culture. It is a book many people first meet as children, but its humor, imagination and emotional pull continue to follow them long after they grow up.

1972 Soul Epic With a Groundbreaking 12-Minute Runtime Named One of the Essential Temptations Songs of All Time

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 4:36pm

Few vocal groups have shaped popular music like The Temptations. The band's original lead singer and founding member, Paul Williams, was born on July 2, 1939. The music legend passed away in 1973, just a year after one of the band's most ambitious recordings was released. With a runtime of nearly 12 minutes, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" remains one of the group's most influential achievements.

Blending a lengthy runtime with cinematic storytelling, psychedelic soul, orchestral arrangements, and funk, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and produced by Whitfield. The song transformed the Motown legends from hitmakers, known for beloved classics like "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," into groundbreaking musical storytellers.

A new ranking includes "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" among The Temptations' 20 most essential songs. Here's why:

“This vivid depiction of a broken home boasted one of the most stunning arrangements in Motown history and one of the most inspired, atmospheric intros of any pop-soul hit. It became their final pop No. 1 and another Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, and can be enjoyed in its full near-12-minute glory on the All Directions album.”

Why "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" Is One of The Temptations' Essential Songs

The Temptations boast one of the most remarkable catalogs in popular music, and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" stands apart because it combines the group's legendary harmonies with emotionally rich performances and masterful storytelling. The song follows a son trying to uncover the truth about his late father, unfolding like a movie as each verse reveals new details while building emotional tension through sparse vocals and an extended instrumental introduction.

At the time of its release, the song was nothing short of groundbreaking. "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" pushed Motown into bold new creative territory, proving that soul music could be ambitious, cinematic, and commercially successful all at once.

The Temptations' Lasting Influence on Popular Music

The Temptations' smooth harmonies, polished performances, and innovative storytelling have influenced generations of artists, from Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones to New Edition and Hall & Oates. Their willingness to evolve musically helped redefine what vocal groups could accomplish and cemented their place among the most influential acts in music history.

Released more than 50 years ago, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" still feels remarkably modern. Its cinematic production, layered instrumentation, and emotionally complex storytelling feel especially relevant in an era when long-form storytelling has become increasingly popular across music and streaming media.

One of the band's boldest recordings, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" helped transform Motown's sound and remains one of the most influential songs in popular music. More than five decades later, it continues to stand as an essential listen for music lovers and anyone discovering the enduring legacy of The Temptations.

She’s spent years as a “lowbrow” crime journalist (her words!), and now she’s back home to finish her long-overdue book about the “Crying Killer.” Things take a turn when her bid for solitude leads to a stalker emerging who claims to be the child of West, but she’s never had children, so how is that possible?

Is 'Voicemails for Isabelle' Based on a True Story? The Real Inspiration Behind Netflix's Emotional Rom-Com

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 4:24pm

Netflix may not release as many original romanticcomedies as Hallmark Channel, but the streamer delivers plenty of crowd-pleasers throughout the year. Unlike Hallmark's family-friendly romances, Netflix rom-coms often feature sharper humor, stronger language and more adult situations. Its latest hit, Voicemails for Isabelle, follows an aspiring chef grieving the loss of her sister. She copes by leaving heartfelt voicemails on her late sister's old phone number—unaware that the number has been reassigned to a complete stranger.

Since premiering in late June, Voicemails for Isabelle has quickly climbed Netflix's Top 10 and become one of the streamer's biggest word-of-mouth hits. Equal parts funny, romantic and emotional, the film has left many viewers wondering whether its unusual premise actually happened in real life.

Let's take a look at Voicemails for Isabelle and learn more about the actors as well as the events that inspired the film.

📺 SIGN UP for Parade‘s Daily newsletter & get the scoop on the latest TV news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎥

What is Voicemails for Isabelle about?

Jill (Zoey Deutch) copes with her sister’s death by leaving her voicemails chronicling her chaotic life in San Francisco. When the number is unknowingly reassigned to Wes (Nick Robinson), an elusive Austin real estate agent begins receiving the hilariously confessional messages.

Is Voicemails for Isabelle based on real events?

Yes—but only partly. Voicemails for Isabelle isn't based on one specific true story, but writer-director Leah McKendrick has said the idea came from real experiences.

In an interview with PEOPLE, McKendrick explained that the original inspiration came from a stand-up comedy routine performed by one of her roommates. The routine centered on the roommate's father leaving long, rambling voicemails. Another comedian later joked that he'd spent three years waiting for his own father to leave him a voicemail—only for the punchline to reveal that his father had died.

McKendrick combined that idea with her own habit of leaving lengthy voicemails for her sister after she moved to New York for college while McKendrick remained in Los Angeles pursuing an acting career. Together, those real-life experiences evolved into the emotional premise behind Voicemails for Isabelle.

Is Voicemails for Isabelle worth watching?

If you're looking for a heartfelt romantic comedy with plenty of laughs, Voicemails for Isabelle is worth adding to your watch list. While the film tackles grief and loss, it balances those heavier moments with charming performances, witty dialogue and genuine chemistry between its leads. It's the kind of feel-good movie that's perfect for a cozy movie night, whether you're watching with your partner or a group of friends.

Donna Kelce's NYC Arrival Ahead of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Rumored Wedding Has Fans Focused on One Detail

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 4:23pm

If there was any doubt thatTaylor Swift and Travis Kelce's rumored wedding weekend was underway, Donna Kelce may have just added another clue.

The 73-year-old was spotted arriving in the city on Thursday, July 2, People and TMZ reported just hours before a reported rehearsal dinner. While neither Swift nor Kelce, both 36, has confirmed any wedding plans, Donna's appearance in Manhattan is the latest development fans have seized on as rumors continue to swirl.

The speculation has only intensified thanks to unusual activity outside Madison Square Garden, where the ceremony is supposedly taking place tomorrow, July 3. Sources on the ground have spotted trucks from several production companies parked near the arena's 33rd Street loading dock.

All that aside, any fans couldn’t help but comment as to why Donna was flying commercial for her son’s big day.

“I guess the PJ was busy burning fuel for something more important things than the mom of the groom?” one X user wrote.

Another asked, “They couldn’t send Taylor’s private jet and a car service for mother of the groom?”

“I’m still trying to understand why Travis Kelce’s Mom flew commercial and not on one of the jets that Travis and Taylor use,” said a third.

READ MORE: How Much Are Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Paying for Reported Madison Square Garden Wedding?

And while the couple has remained tight-lipped about the whole celebration, Donna has previously made it clear she's not one to give away family secrets.

Back in February, she was asked during an airport interview whether she'd been required to sign a nondisclosure agreement regarding her son's wedding plans. "They know I can keep a secret," Donna replied with a smile.

Swift and Kelce got engaged on August 26, 2025, after dating for two years. Since then, they've largely kept details about their relationship (and any future wedding plans) out of the spotlight.

Whether Donna's arrival is simply a family visit or the clearest sign yet that wedding weekend has officially begun remains to be seen. But if one thing’s for certain, fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see what unfolds over the next 24 hours.

1976 Rock Classic, Named No. 1 Hit Song, Became a Timeless Road Trip Anthem

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 4:00pm

Fifty years ago, the beloved '70s rock group the Steve Miller Band released "Rock'n Me"—a song that became a memorable road trip anthem and a massive commercial success.

Released on August 14, 1976 as the second single from their ninth studio album, Fly Like an Eagle, "Rock'n Me" quickly became a massive hit. Upon its release, the track climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 1 on November 6, where it remained for a week. The chart-topper became the band's second No. 1 hit, solidifying them as a defining act within the rock genre.

The unprecedented success of "Rock'n Me" fueled the commercial triumph of its parent album. Fly Like an Eagle earned its first Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on September 27, 1976 after selling 1 million copies in the U.S. Since then, the record has achieved three additional Platinum certifications, selling a staggering total of 4 million copies.

Produced by the band's frontman and songwriter, Steve Miller, through Capitol Records, "Rock'n Me" is instantly recognizable for its easy-going classic rock sound. The song utilizes a groovy guitar intro, a driving rhythm section and a catchy melody to make for the perfect radio-friendly hit. Anchored by Miller's smooth vocals, the track features melodic hooks and approachable harmonies designed for singing along on the highway.

The lyrics in "Rock'n Me" were inspired by Miller's time on the road while traveling with his band. The track was composed while preparing for the 1975 Knebworth Festival, as the singer needed an upbeat, high-energy crowd-pleaser capable of opening their set with a bang.

Throughout the track, Miller references multiple cross-country destinations, including major cities such as Phoenix, Tacoma, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Los Angeles. These travel-centered shoutouts capture the ultimate spirit of American wanderlust, making for a quintessential road trip anthem.

Five decades after its initial release, "Rock'n Me" continues to resonate with listeners. In the digital era, the track has found success on streaming platforms. On Spotify alone, the song has garnered over 226 million streams—proving that its breezy, open-road energy remains completely timeless.

Aldi Is Selling Four Ice Cubes for $5—‘Not Just Any Ice Cubes. Frozen Ones’

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 3:54pm

It’s getting hot out there. Seriously. There’s a heatwave gripping the country, and with record-high temperatures, you’re looking for an easy way to cool down. Luckily, Aldi is selling a four-pack of ice cubes…for $4.99. And bonus, they’re crystal clear.

If you’re thinking, “Hmm, $5 for four cubes of frozen water?” Or, “Um, Isn’t ice always clear?” You’re not alone. When news of the freezer section find hit social media, shoppers had plenty to say about this seemingly odd item.

Yes, we get it. Craft ice is an actual thing.

As one shopper points out on the Aldi subreddit, “For those who are unaware, this is a real thing. The ice is supposed to be perfectly clear, which can be nice if you’re making cocktails with higher-end alcohol. Bordering the line between pretentious and a scam in my view.” And when one Redditor posted, “This can’t be a real thing,” another answered, “There is a guy named “the ice man” in Maryland, and they charge like $5 a cube and people pay it…Real crazy but it's real.”

“This is a joke, right?” asked one Aldi shopper. While most of the people on this post seemed to have the same view, some clapped back with their own explanations: “It’s clear for cocktails. Clear ice is not easy to make at home,” and “It’s rather difficult to do, or at least requires some specialized equipment, specific technique, and time to tinker with it.”

Of course, critics had plenty of snarky remarks about the $4.99 four-piece pack. “Not just any ice cubes. Frozen ones!”, “And crystal clear!”, “What happens if they melt on the way home? Do they refreeze the same way?”, and “I’m betting the non-frozen ice cubes are cheaper.”

Want to know more about these craft cocktail cubes? Fortunately, an Aldi Redditor wrote a very thorough review that you can read right here. But if you’re looking for the highlights: “Opening the package, the ice did indeed come in cubes as advertised.” The review continued, “To my understanding, these cubes are meant to be used with a liquor such as scotch. In my humble opinion, it is entirely unfair to exclude the non-alcoholic demographic.” With that in mind, the reviewer adds the ice to reverse osmosis water and, “After allowing the cube to melt for approximately one minute in the water, I gave it a gentle sip…I give the taste a 9.5.”

View this post on Instagram

On @candyhunting's Instagram post, featuring the cubes, one shopper pointed out, "Aldi must think we are all crazy. But I guarantee people will buy these." Another commenter quipped, "Frozen ice cubes? As opposed to thawed?"

Bottom line—expensive, crystal clear ice is real, and there is a market for it. That said, $4.99 for four cubes from Aldi’s freezer section is something that most of the store’s shoppers just can’t get behind.

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 3:46pm

In 2025, Ferris Bueller's Day Off star Mia Sarahadher first big-screen role in ten years with The Life of Chuck. While talking to Pete Ferriero on his podcast, The Slice of Life Show, Sara admitted that it wasn't the acting she'd missed but the "camaraderie," she said. "I missed being on a film set because I grew up on a film set."

Sara had begun work on her first movie when she was 15. After she stepped away, she wrote poetry and spent more time with her husband, Brian Henson, and kids. But an unexpected dinner with director Mike Flanagan and his wife, Kate Siegel, lured her back.

After explaining to them why she stopped acting, Flanagan asked whether she would return to the industry. After telling him that she didn't know, Henson decided to jump in. "'Offer her something, and she'll do it,'" she recalled him saying to Flanagan. "And so he did, he called my bluff. I said, 'For you? Of course, of course.'"

Married to Luke Skywalker

Not only did he offer her a role in the Stephen King adaptation, but the icing on the cake was that she got to play Mark Hamill's wife.

"Mark Hamill is like a dream boat of a man, a dream boat," Sara gushed. The Life of Chuck is the first film Sara and Hamill have starred in together, but it's fair to say that she's a longtime fan.

"I grew up in the seventies. Are you kidding?" She told PEOPLE in 2025. "I couldn't believe when [Flanagan] told me that it was Mark Hamill [who] was going to play the grandpa, I couldn't believe it. I get to be married to Luke Skywalker. It's the greatest thing."

Sara also admitted that she "tried" not to fangirl over the Star Wars actor and instead focused on making their on-screen relationship as realistic as possible.

"We had so much fun actually," she said. "Because we knew we had just this little short moment, but we really had fun just trying to convey the loving relationship. And when it was over, we just thought, 'Oh, that's not enough. We want to do more.'"

A Short But Sweet Return

What started as a casual dinner conversation turned into the perfect Hollywood comeback for Sara. Driven by nostalgia for set life and the chance to work alongside Hamill, she found her role in The Life of Chuck to be an unforgettable experience. Though her time on screen was short, we doubt it'll be the last we've seen of Sara.

1976 Rock Classic, Reimagined 48 Years Later, Became a Fourth of July Anthem

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 3:30pm

Few songs evoke the spirit of America quite like "American Girl."

When Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released the track on their 1976 self-titled debut album, its ringing guitars, driving rhythm and uplifting energy immediately set it apart.

Although it wasn't a major hit upon its initial release, the song steadily grew into one of Petty's signature recordings and a staple of classic rock radio. Nearly four decades later, it found a fresh audience when country star Dierks Bentley reimagined it for a new generation.

The song helped introduce one of rock's greatest storytellers.

Written by Petty, "American Girl" tells the story of a young woman longing for something bigger just beyond the horizon. While many listeners have interpreted the lyrics in different ways over the years, Petty consistently rejected urban legends surrounding the song, explaining that it was simply about hope, possibility and youthful dreams.

Although it peaked outside the upper reaches of the charts, "American Girl" became one of those rare songs whose legacy far exceeded its original commercial performance. It evolved into a concert favorite, a classic rock radio staple and one of the recordings most closely associated with Petty's career.

"American Girl" was recorded on July 4, 1976, the exact date of America's bicentennial. It was only fitting, as its distinctly American imagery also made it a natural fit for patriotic celebrations. Over the decades, "American Girl" has become a familiar soundtrack for Fourth of July barbecues, fireworks displays, road trips and summer gatherings, earning a reputation as one of rock's unofficial Independence Day anthems.

Petty, who died in 2017, continued playing the song throughout the rest of his touring career.

"Sometimes I feel like I don't want to play 'American Girl' anymore," Petty said in Paul Zollo's 2005 book,Conversations With Tom Petty. "But then maybe you'll get two hours into the show, and the place is frenzied, and the vibe is so great, and the first couple chords of that song come on, and there's such a rush of adrenaline throughout the building, that the next thing you know, you're really digging playing 'American Girl.' And I'll feel, I can't believe I am digging this again, but I am."

In 2024, Dierks Bentley paid tribute to the classic by recording his own version for the tribute album Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty. Rather than dramatically reinventing the song, Bentley preserved its unmistakable spirit while adding his own country-rock vocals and bluegrass instrumentation, introducing the beloved favorite to a new audience of country fans.

"This song, 'American Girl,' I've listened to it so many times," Bentley told Taste of Country. "I'm convinced the second verse of this song is some of the best singing in the history of any rock or country band, because his voice … there's so much angst! You know, it's just his voice has that kind of brokenness to it to begin with — just the emotion behind his voice is just unparalleled."

The recording also underscored Petty's enormous influence across genres. Long admired by rock, country and Americana artists alike, his songwriting has inspired countless musicians, with "American Girl" remaining one of the most frequently covered songs in his catalog.

Nearly 50 years after its release, "American Girl" continues to symbolize freedom, optimism and the open road. Reimagined by Dierks Bentley almost four decades later, the timeless rock classic remains one of the songs listeners return to every summer, and especially every Fourth of July.

1975 Rock Song, Never a No. 1 Hit, Remains a Radio Classic 51 Years Later

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 3:00pm

Fifty-one years ago, '70s Southern rock band ZZ Top released "Tush"—a song that went on to become a major radio classic despite never topping the Billboard charts.

Released in July 1975 as the only single from their fourth studio album Fandango!, "Tush" quickly became a fan favorite. After rock radio disc jockeys heard the track, they began spinning it constantly, providing it with the momentum to push it into the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Even though the song never officially hit No. 1, it still peaked at No. 20, marking the band's first major mainstream hit.

Alongside the success of "Tush," Fandango! experienced massive commercial triumph. The parent album went on to be certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 500,000 copies—an impressive feat for the then up-and-coming rockers.

Produced by Bill Ham through London Records, "Tush" was instantly recognizable for its high-energy Texas blues-rock sound. The song featured late bassist Dusty Hill on lead vocals, who provided a much grittier vocal delivery than the band's primary vocalist, Billy Gibbons. Hill's raw voice enhanced the track's soundscape, cohesively blending with the searing slide guitar and driving rhythm section.

"Tush" featured an arrangement that immediately hooked listeners, and its widespread appeal helped it thrive across the nation on 1970s FM rock stations. Even today, the song remains a staple on classic rock radio, attesting to its unique ability to make a lasting impact on audiences.

Written by Gibbons, Hill and drummer Frank Beard, the single served as an uplifting anthem that explored the desire for companionship and a good time. The song's title works as a double entendre, simultaneously referring to a luxurious lifestyle and woman's buttocks. Its relatable lyrics about wanting an enjoyable life alongside human connection resonated deeply with audiences.

Over five decades after its release, "Tush" continues to find new ways to connect with listeners. Even in the ever-changing digital landscape, the track has found massive success on streaming platforms, accumulating over 251 million streams on Spotify alone—proving its endurance as a classic rock hit.

Oprah Winfrey Once Pulled a Wild TV Stunt in 1988 That Would Never Fly Today

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 2:48pm

I've been a plus-size girl my entire life, and growing up in '90s diet culture didn't do much for my mental health. Not only were women chasing the "heroin chic" look, thanks to certain models, but anyone who was plus-size in the public eye was also brutally ridiculed. Every major TV show had a "fat" gag, and the clothing options for bigger gals were pitiful.

One of the people at the dead center of both fatphobia and diet culture was undoubtedly Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey was, in many ways, a victim of it. Despite becoming a local Chicago success in 1984 and, later, a nationally syndicated success in 1986, critics picked apart every inch of that poor woman's body. Naturally, it took a toll on her, and over the following decades, she would often yo-yo diet to the point where her body weight decreased and increased drastically.

Oprah's Dieting Throughout the Years

There were so many bumps in the road for Winfrey in her pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Some of her biggest diet culture moments were extreme. In the '90s, she reached a peak weight of 237 pounds. She hired a personal trainer and a chef, drastically reduced her food intake, and ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 1994 at just 150 pounds.

Roughly a decade later, Winfrey purchased a 10% stake in WeightWatchers and became the face of its SmartPoints point-allocation system, which emphasized balanced eating rather than strict deprivation. She served on the company’s board for nearly a decade before officially stepping down.

However, of all the diet-related things Oprah has entangled herself with, there was one moment at the beginning of her career she regrets more than anything.

Oprah Rolls Out the 'Fat Wagon'

In 1988, after spending four months on an all-liquid diet, Winfrey lost over 67 pounds. To "celebrate" the accomplishment, she loaded a wagon with visual representations of the 67 pounds of fat she had lost. The celebration wouldn't last long—she stopped the liquid diet and almost immediately began gaining the weight back.

It was truly a polarizing moment, one that seared itself into the brains of women around the country, and the gravity of that is not lost on Winfrey herself.

At a WeightWatchers event in 2024, she took accountability for her actions, according to People. She began talking about how done she was with the scrutiny and criticism of her body while taking accountability.

“I also want to acknowledge that I have been a steadfast participant in this diet culture through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years, through online,” she said. “I've been a major contributor to it. I cannot tell you how many weight loss shows and makeovers I have done, and they have been a staple since I've been working in television.”

“I've shared how that famous ‘wagon of fat’ moment on the Oprah show is one of my biggest regrets,” she continued. “It sent a message that starving yourself with a liquid diet set a standard for people watching that I nor anybody else could uphold, and — I've said this before — the very next day, I began to gain the weight back."

Oprah's Lifestyle Today

Today, Winfrey is taking a much more level-headed approach to maintaining a healthy weight. Oprah revealed that she completely exited traditional "diet culture." After years of relying on willpower, she now focuses on a combination of hiking, mindful whole-foods eating, and a medically approved GLP-1 prescription medication under a doctor's guidance.

It's good to hear a celebrity acknowledge the hurt and harm she's caused as part of diet culture, and hopefully her new lifestyle will bring her the peace she's sought for so many years.

7 Books from June 2026 You Totally Slept On — But Make the Perfect Summer Read

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 2:46pm

It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for romance or a murder mystery; June 2026 was packed with some excellent reads. You likely slept on many of them, as the focus became on some of the big hitters.

There’s Only One Sin in Hollywood by Rasheed Newson and Harvest Season by Brynne Weaver quickly became some of the most talked-about books (and for great reasons). Yet, there were some worthy contenders lurking in the shadows.

As the heat goes up, you’ll spend more time at the beach or relaxing on the patio. These are the seven books to add to your list.

Courtesy of Hyperion Avenue ‘Death on the Lanai’ by Rachel Ekstrom Courage

Murder mysteries can be cozy and fun, and that’s certainly the case with Death on the Lanai by Rachel Ekstrom Courage. Not only is this a fun take on a murder mystery, but it’s a Golden Girls mystery. Yes, it’s fully licensed and official, and you’ll get to see your favorite women back on a mission to figure out a murder.

Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and Sophia are invited to a lavish party. Well, one of them is, and they’re not sure which one, so they all go. Fortunately, the host is more than willing to let them all stay, but when the host turns up dead, things take a suspenseful turn. One of our Golden Girls ends up a suspect, and the others protect her knowing that she definitely didn’t do it. Who did, though?

Courtesy of Alfred A. Knopf Books/Penguin Random House ‘Shadow Reaper’ by Lynette Noni

For those on the hunt for a YA romantasy, Shadow Reaper by Lynette Noni is the June release that you will not want to sleep on any longer. Set in the city of Aravell, it follows 17-year-old Viridia Solace, who has trained for years to hunt beings that are called the reapers. She’s desperate to kill the one known as the Reaper Priest, who killed her parents.

Viri gets a chance when the Priest’s most loyal follower, Reeve Aston, is captured. However, there’s a price that comes with the chance of revenge, and Viri has to decide if it’s worth it. This is a wonderful mixture of romance, fantasy, revenge-driven plots, and real character development. While it’s YA, it doesn’t read that way, and it’s perfect for all romantasy fans.

Courtesy of Little, Brown and Company ‘Wildcard’ by Jennifer Iacopelli

The sequel to Game, Set, Match came out in June, and you may have missed it. Wildcard by Jennifer Iacopelli continues Indiana Gaffney’s story, as she continues to push forward in her dream career. However, everything could come crashing down when it comes to her hidden romance — a romance that she’s even hiding from her best friend.

While Wildcard could have brought out all sorts of jealous-girl tropes, it finds a balance between the initial feelings of betrayal and the understanding of the situation. Sure, the women have their eyes set on winning, but they also know that winning can’t come at the cost of friendship, and it’s a true draw in the middle of this sports romance.

Courtesy of Penguin Random House ‘Self-Help for Serial Killers’ by Asia Mackay

What happens when two happily married serial killers reach a midlife crisis? Well, that’s what Self-Help for Serial Killers by Asia Mackay gets into. And you know you completely skipped out on this hilarious thriller novel. It’s packed with family drama and psychopathic moments that make you crave more.

Hazel and Fox seem to have it all. They have their children, and a beautiful home. They even seem to have the work-life balance perfected. That is until they draw a dangerous group of people to their doorstep. The couple isn’t afraid of bad men, but there is the fear of the neighbors learning what their extracurricular activities involve, especially when real family is on the line.

Courtesy of Del Ray Books ‘Wildflower’ by Becky Jenkinson

When it comes to the summer months, you want romance, fantasy, and flowers. Well, Wildflower by Becky Jenkinson offers all of that and more. At the same time, there’s a mystery to figure out that is laced with secrets and magic. This was the perfect release in June, focusing on LGBTQ+ romance in more ways than one!

Fliss is a woman simply trying to live with a curse. When she gets an anonymous request for a flower she’s never heard of, she doesn’t expect it to lead her on a journey that will get to the bottom of her curse. Could she end up removing it after all these years? Are the risks worth the reward?

Courtesy of Simon & Schuster ‘Winner Takes All’ by Emily Martin

If you love The Hangover but would like more of a romance element to it, then you’ll need to turn to Winner Takes All by Emily Martin. It brings the enemies-to-lovers trope, but adds in the wedding that neither of them remembers.

These two music moguls now need to figure out what happened the night before. They know they were both trying to win a particular band over, but somehow, a night in Vegas turned into a marriage…to each other. They don’t know how, but in the attempt to retrace their steps, could they realize that they actually have more in common than they originally thought?

Courtesy of Del Ray Books ‘The Winged Game’ by Sophie Kim

For those who need a mixture of everything, The Winged Game by Sophie Kim is a must. Now, it’s a little unfair to include this on a “books you slept on” type of list when it was only released on June 30, but it’s one that you need to read. It follows Taissa Cho and Kion Locke, as they figure out their not-quite-hatred for each other, learn what’s going on with the team, The Stymphs, and get to the bottom of a mysterious illness that’s affecting all the winged animals, except their own.

There’s mystery, intrigue, fantasy, romance, and sport, all thrown into one. The best thing is that it’s not just Taissa and Kion that get development. While it’s only told from their POVs, we get to know about the other members of the Stymphs, and the connection with the creatures is a wonderful addition. Chronos is sure to become your favorite character by the middle of the story.

'70s Soft Rock Icon and Founding Member of Beloved Rock Band Turns 75

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 2:28pm

Soft rock would not be quite the same without the iconic bass lines and warm vocals that Joe Puerta contributed throughout his career.

Now, the musician behind some of that sound is celebrating a milestone birthday. Puerta, the bassist, vocalist and founding member of Ambrosia, turns 75 on July 2 after decades of helping bring the band's music to life.

Ambrosia formed in Southern California in 1970 with Puerta, David Pack, Christopher North and Burleigh Drummond. With Puerta as part of the band's classic lineup, the group became known for blending soft rock, pop, progressive rock and soul into a sound that felt both smooth and ambitious.

The band went on to score several major hits between the mid-1970s and early 1980s, including "How Much I Feel," "Biggest Part of Me," "You're the Only Woman (You & I)" and "Holdin' on to Yesterday." Puerta co-wrote "Holdin' on to Yesterday," which became one of the band's early signature songs and earned three Grammy nominations.

Puerta once reflected on the emotional side of songwriting in an interview with ClassicBands.com, explaining that songs often come from real life. "You write a lot from experience," he said, "and if not personal experience, then people you come in contact with."

That approach allowed Ambrosia's music to connect with listeners long after its original release. The band's biggest songs remain staples of classic rock and soft rock playlists, carrying the same warm, nostalgic feel that made them stand out decades ago.

Puerta's career also extended beyond Ambrosia. During the 1980s, he became part of Bruce Hornsby and the Range, adding another major chapter to a career that had already made a lasting mark.

Now, as Puerta turns 75, his work continues to speak through the songs that made Ambrosia a lasting name in soft rock. Decades after those hits first reached listeners, Puerta remains a defining voice and musician from one of soft rock's most memorable eras.

Carole King Is Bringing Her Iconic 'Tapestry' Concert to YouTube, 10 Years After Epic Show

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 2:13pm

Carole King is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of one of her most epic concerts by giving fans a chance to rewatch it online.

Announced Thursday on Instagram, the music icon shared that the concert film of her 2016 show in London's Hyde Park — where tens of thousands of people enjoyed her hits from her 1971 album, Tapestry — will be released on YouTube on Saturday to mark a decade since the show.

View this post on Instagram

The concert film aptly named, Carole King: Tapestry – Captured Live at Hyde Park London is complete with interviews from King herself along with celebrities like Tom Hanksand Elton John, who not only attended the show but introduced the iconic songwriter to the stage.

"I knew that there would be a great crowd, I didn't know how great a crowd it would be" she said in the trailer. "It was huge, it was like 60,000 people?"

She was then corrected from a behind-the-camera voice, letting her know there were 65,000 attendees.

"65! Even better!" she said.

According to the BBC, the last time King performed in London, before the Hyde Park concert, was over 20 years prior in 1989.

Tapestry, which is also marking 55 years since its release, includes her famed songs including "I Feel The Earth Move," "You've Got a Friend," and "It's Too Late."

"It is remarkable to me that Tapestry is still resonating with people and into the youngest generations" King said in the clip. "I saw really young teenagers mouthing the words, it brings generations together."

"Tapestry became a part of our life, it became a tapestry of our lives in fact," John said, adding later in the trailer, "I can't thank her enough because without her I would have never wanted to write songs."

Hanks referred to the album as one, "that you could not escape, that entered into the zeitgeist, that became the stuff of our DNA."

"The music lifted you up," he said in another scene.

The concert film had a one-night showing in U.S. movie theaters in 2017 and went on to be released on DVD and Blu-ray.
