1970s Tear-Jerker Song Celebrates Milestone Where 'The Music Died'

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 10:44am

More than half a century after Don McLeanimmortalized "The Day The Music Died" in his heartfelt anthem, "American Pie" will receive an honor like no other.

The Surf Ballroom — the National Historic Landmark where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson performed on February 02, 1959, as part of the Winter Dance Party tour — announced on February 03 that they would install a life-sized bronze statue of McLean as a tribute to the lasting impact of his iconic anthem.

Acclaimed sculptor Zenos Frudakis has carved the statue, having previously worked with McLean to create the bronze portrait used for his Classics album artwork. The new statue will serve as a landmark for visitors to the Surf Ballroom, helping them learn about the history and the final performance of these young rock stars.

"The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation is thrilled that one of our most iconic ambassadors is being honored with a statue at The Surf Ballroom, the site of Buddy Holly's final performance," said Rick French, chairman of The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation and a national trustee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in a press release.

"While 'American Pie' was famously inspired by the plane crash that claimed the lives of Buddy, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson on February 03, 1959, it has stood for more than half a century as an anthem to the cultural shifts of our country and is as relevant today as it has ever been," added French.

Following the show at The Surf Ballroom—an unscheduled stop on the troubled  Winter Tour—a frustrated Holly, unhappy with the state of the malfunctioning tour bus, chartered a plane to fly himself and his band to the tour's next stop near Fargo, North Dakota. The Big Bopper, who was dealing with the flu, took the place of one of Holly's bandmates, Waylon Jennings. Valens won his seat on the plane from Tommy Allsup over a coin toss.

The plane took off after midnight on February 03, but crashed soon afterwards, killing all aboard. Twelve years after the tragedy, a young singer-songwriter from New Rochelle looked at America, caught in the throes of political and social upheaval, and wrote a song that captured this transitional period.

"I was conscious of the fact that I was trying to create a rock'n'roll dream sequence," McLean said in a recent interview. "But it was way more than rock'n'roll. It was about an America that was coming apart at the seams."

Related: Don McLean Explains 'American Pie' as America ‘Coming Apart at the Seams’

McLean included the song on his album, American Pie, which he released in October 1971. A month later, he released the eight-and-a-half-minute-long song as a single. Despite its unconventional length, the song resonated with listeners, and "American Pie" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Though unconventional in its eight-and-a-half-minute length, "American Pie" was a hit. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. In 2017, the Library of Congress selected the song to be preserved in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."

Don McLean's management is working with the Surf Ballroom to plan a proper unveiling of the statue upon completion. Until then, McLean will be on the road, playing the following dates across America.

Backstreet Boys Are 'So Back' With New Super Bowl Ad Featuring Special Guests

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 10:36am

If you can't catch Backstreet Boys in Las Vegas this month, at least you can get a quick fix of the boy band on TV in the coming days.

Thanks to T-Mobile, Nick Carter and company are part of an all-new Super Bowl commercial this year. It'll mark the wireless network company's 13th straight ad campaign for the Big Game — and this one is particularly noteworthy.

Not only has T-Mobile teamed up with the timeless Backstreet Boys this time around, but the ad spots leading up to Feb. 8 also feature appearances from beloved actor Druski and other big names... who have not yet been revealed.

A new teaser just dropped featuring the Grammy-nominated group warming up ahead of the shoot, riffing on vocal exercises with T-Mobile tongue-twisters inspired by customer perks. "We're so back!" says singer Brian Littrell in the upbeat clip. Check it out below.

Also on Monday, Feb. 2, T-Mobile released a subtle teaser featuring "T-Mobile Chief Switching Officer" Druski, who makes a mysterious call to set something in motion. Consider it the first breadcrumb leading up to the Super Bowl spot this weekend...

The 60-second spot will air during the second quarter of the NFL championship on Sunday, with more content to roll out across @TMobile Instagram, TikTok and YouTube account in the lead-up and beyond.

Meanwhile, the pop-culture curator known as Deux Moi had rumors swirling about the Backstreet Boys collab last week, posting a clip to social media of the boy band members filing out of a T-Mobile building.

"SPOTTED: A serious production build-out inside the T-Mobile flagship in Times Square AND a late-‘90s track running on a loop!" the caption of its Instagram post read. "This raises the obvious question: are Backstreet Boys revisiting something from the past, or quietly working on what comes next."

Fans flooded the post's comments section with their thoughts on what's to come, with one person correctly guessing, "I smell a t-mobile Super Bowl commercial in the making."

The special anniversary show will feature performances by Alison Krauss, Billy Strings, Dan Tyminski, Emmylou Harris, Old Crow Medicine Show, Molly Tuttle, Del McCoury Band, The Fairfield Four, The Whites and more. Actor and musician Tim Blake Nelson, who starred in the film, is also scheduled to appear.

Released in 2000, O Brother, Where Art Thou? was produced by T Bone Burnett for the Coen Brothers’ film of the same name, set in Depression-era Mississippi and starring George Clooney, John Turturro, and Nelson. The soundtrack went on to become a cultural phenomenon, climbing to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and winning multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

More than a commercial success, the soundtrack is widely credited with sparking a 21st-century roots-music revival, reintroducing bluegrass, gospel, folk, and traditional country to a mainstream audience. It was later named Album of the Year by the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music Awards, and the International Bluegrass Music Association, and has since been ranked among the greatest soundtracks of all time by outlets including Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Time Out, and Parade.

In recent weeks alone, the Opry has marked major career landmarks and historic firsts, from welcoming new members like Suzy Bogguss to spotlighting multi-generation collaborations and surprise tributes that tie today’s artists directly back to the genre’s roots.

By revisiting O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the Opry’s February 28 celebration underscores how deeply that soundtrack’s influence still runs even 25 years later.

Dolly Parton’s 1974 Classic Named Most Romantic Country Song—Does It Deserve the Title?

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 10:30am

Dolly Parton struck music gold with a 1974 hit, named the top country love song of all time, but does it really deserve the title?

Billboard shared their staff picks for the 50 Favorite Country Love Songs of all time in 2025, and "I Will Always Love You" is at the top of their list. The outlet wrote, "Dolly Parton’s soft yet soulful tone shines in her 1974 ballad, which topped Hot Country Songs. Momentum for the song resurged in the ’90s when Whitney Houston’s iconic cover topped the Hot 100 for 14 weeks following its placement in 1992’s The Bodyguard, making it one of the biggest hits of all time."

Although the tune is widely believed to be a love song, "I Will Always Love You" is peppered with heartbreak. The song was written by Parton to tell her longtime mentor, duet partner, and producer Porter Wagoner, that she was leaving him to be her own star.

Parton told The Tennessean that she and Wagoner, "had one of those relationships where we were just so passionate about what we did; it was like fire and ice. We kind of butted heads all the time, but we loved each other."

Parade Daily🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

She continued, "There was a great passion there. And I wanted to leave the show. I had told Porter that I would stay with the show for five years. I wanted to go out on my own."

"Well, five years passed, and I was still in the show. We were having big hit duets. It was his show, and I understood all that, but I still wanted to go. So we were going around and around with that," Parton added.

"So, finally, I thought, 'How am I gonna make him understand how much I appreciate everything, but that I have to go? He won't listen to me. He's not listening to reason when I want to go!' So I went home, and I thought, 'Well, what do you do best? You write songs.' So I sat down, and I wrote this song."

Parton concluded, "I took it back to the office the next day. I said, 'Porter, sit down. I've written something I think you need to hear.' I started singing 'I Will Always Love You,' and he started crying. When I finished, he said, "Well, hell! If you feel that strong about it, just go on — providing I get to produce that record, because that's the best song you ever wrote.'"

Parton's version of "I Will Always Love You" would reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in June 1974. A rerelease of the song charted on Billboard in 1982 at No. 53.

The song skyrocketed after Houston recorded it for the soundtrack of the feature film The Bodyguard. The crossover success cemented its place as one of the most enduring recordings in music history. In 1992, "I Will Always Love You" spent an incredible 14 weeks at Billboard's No. 1 position.

"I Will Always Love You" would go on to win Record of the Year at the 1994 Grammy Awards, as well as Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Album of the Year for The Bodyguard soundtrack. The song was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2018.

Whitney Houston’s version became a global phenomenon, topping charts worldwide and redefining the song for a new era. The massive success also sent listeners back to Dolly Parton’s original, reminding fans that the iconic song began as a bittersweet breakup ballad.

Members of Classic ‘70s Band Had ‘Beautiful Reunion’ Before One of Their Deaths

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 10:27am

Three Dog Night founding member Chuck Negron died Feb. 2 at the age of 83. He sang lead on the band’s best-known hits, including “Joy to the World (Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog),” “One (Is the Loneliest Number),” “The Show Must Go On,” and “Old Fashioned Love Song.”

Prior to his death, Negron had a bittersweet reunion with Three Dog Night’s other surviving member, Danny Hutton, Three Dog Night shared on their social media accounts. The band’s other original member, Cory Wells, died in 2015 from multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Three Dog Night split up in 1976, reunited in 1981 and then Negron left the group for good in 1985 due to his struggles with drug addiction.

“I received the news today that my former bandmate from Three Dog Night, Chuck Negron, passed away peacefully at his home,” Hutton wrote in a message posted along with a photo of an empty stage bathed in purple lights with the Three Dog Night logo.

“When Chuck left the band 40 years ago, we rarely spoke and lost touch for much of that time. Five months ago, his wife Ami called to tell me he was very sick, and I decided I should go see him.

“When I arrived at his house, we hugged, cried, reminisced, and shared many stories. In that moment, we realized how much time had been lost by not being in each other’s lives. It was a beautiful and deeply meaningful reunion.

“Besides being a phenomenal singer, Chuck was a good college basketball player and had a great sense of humor.

“I will always be grateful for the music we made together,” Hutton added.

’90s Rocker Leaves Respected Band After Less Than Three Years

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 9:59am

After almost three years performing with the Chicago-based punk rock band Alkaline Trio, drummer Atom Willard has announced that his time with the band has come to an end.

In a post shared to Instagram on Monday, the longtime drummer explained that his choice to leave Alkaline Trio stemmed from "everything going on, going wrong, in the world right now" and that he will be considering new studio, collaboration and touring opportunities moving forward.

"I hope we can all look to love, compassion, understanding and acceptance of our fellow humans in these dark and scary times," Willard said.

Fans flooded the comments with mixed reactions to the drummer's departure.

View this post on Instagram

"WHAT 😭 man, I really didn't see this one coming. Good on you for doing what's right for you," wrote one user.

Another fan wrote, "So sad to see this. Absolutely loved what you brought to Alkaline Trio. Wherever you go next is so lucky to have you! Looking forward to your next adventure! 💖"

Willard began his drumming career in 1990 when he joined Rocket from the Crypt, a punk rock band in San Diego, California. Since leaving the band in 2000, Willard has played with several different groups over the past 26 years, including big names such as Angels & Airwaves and Against Me!

In August 2022, Willard was critically injured in a motorcycle accident, where he broke his collarbone, four ribs, a toe, a thumb and a wrist among other major injuries, which halted his drumming career for some time while he made his recovery. The following year, Willard was officially announced as Alkaline Trio's next drummer after Derek Grant parted ways with the band in June 2023.

Alkaline Trio formed in 1996 by former blink-182 member Matt Skiba, bassist Rob Doran and drummer Glenn Porter. Since its creation, the band has had several major accomplishments, including the release of 10 albums and a collaboration with famed drummer and producer Travis Barker on three stand-alone singles.

While it's still unclear what Willard's next move will be following his decision to step away from Alkaline Trio, the talented rocker is sure to make big waves in the punk rock scene with the support of his fanbase and through new and exciting collaborations.

KISS Scores a Major Milestone as 1979 Hit Reaches One Billion YouTube Views

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 9:51am

There's no denying that multiple KISS songs have stood the test of time and remain popular across multiple generations of fans. One KISS song in particular has hit a milestone, with "I Was Made For Lovin" You music video hitting over a billion views.

The band posted a celebration photo on Instagram of Paul Stanley, also known as Star Child, in the music video. They also captioned the photo, talking about the grand news and how the song still "dominates" decades later.

"I Was Made For Lovin’ You just passed ONE BILLION views on YouTube. The numbers speak for themselves. This one still dominates," they said. "IWMFLY baby!!"

While the hit song was released in 1979, the music video was uploaded by KISS's official YouTube page six years ago. The song now has another billion milestone, with it having reached over one billion streams on Spotify last summer.

On Aug. 26, 2025, Paul Stanley posted on Facebook, "THE BIGGEST KISS SONG OF ALL TIME IS
'I Was Made for Lovin' You' with 1.3 BILLION total streams on Spotify as of late August and approximately 850 THOUSAND daily streams!! Amazing and THANK YOU!"

The music video was filmed in June of that year after a show cancellation. They decided to use the completed stage to film two videos, and was directed by John Goodhue.

"I Was Made For Loving" You released as part of KISS's seventh studio album titled Dynasty, written by Stanley alongside Desmond Child and Vini Poncia. It became a smash hit on the singles chart, becoming certified gold and going platinum in several countries.

The song's legacy hasn’t been without controversy. Child previously revealed on Talk Is Jericho that there was a rough patch after he was hurt by the band publicly badmouthing the track, particularly its disco-inspired beat, a style KISS wasn’t known for.

Child explained that Gene Simmons was never on board with the song and even made a public remark criticizing it. After addressing the situation with Stanley, Child later received a brief apology from Simmons via his answering machine.

To this day, Simmons has maintained that he never enjoyed performing the song, while Stanley has described its massive success as a double-edged sword for the band.

We Asked 3 Doctors if You Can Still Get the Flu Shot in February, and They All Said the Same Thing

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 9:50am

In the hecticness of the holiday hustle, you may have forgotten to get your flu shot. Yet as you resumed your everyday schedule, you may have started hearing about how nasty flu season is. Yet, stores and commercials are already looking ahead to the spring allergy season. It begs the question: Can you still get the flu shot in February?

Doctors agree that it's best to time your flu shot. "Getting vaccinated too early or assuming it is too late can leave people unprotected during periods when flu is still spreading," says  Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, the chief medical advisor for Sleepopolis. "Understanding timing helps people make informed choices rather than skipping vaccination altogether."

What many people don’t realize is that flu season doesn’t follow a neat calendar. While cases often peak between December and February, significant flu activity can last well into March and even April. That means skipping the vaccine simply because the holidays have passed can leave you vulnerable during a period when the virus is still circulating widely.

Getting vaccinated later in the season can still help reduce your risk of infection, and even if you do get sick, the flu shot has been shown to lower the chances of severe illness, hospitalization and complications. This is especially important for older adults, young children, pregnant people and those with chronic health conditions. In other words, protection delayed is still protection—and it’s often far better than none at all.

OK, so is February too late to get the flu shot? We asked three doctors, and they all said the same thing.

Is February Too Late To Get a Flu Shot?

FluxFactory/Gettyimages

"February is not too late to get a flu shot," Dr. Dasgupta says.

Two other doctors agree: February is still a good time to get the flu shot. "It can still be helpful and can reduce the severity of symptoms," states Dr. Michael Richardson, MD, a family physician.

Now, is February the best time to get the flu shot? No, the best time to get the flu shot is early fall, which is generally October in the U.S. Yet, all three doctors are on the same page that it's important not to let "best" be the enemy of good.

"While February might be thought of as late, we had a peak of cases in March [of 2025], which is when we expect the flu season to end," notes Dr. Sharon Nachman, MD, a chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Stony Brook Children's Hospital. "So, while I might not want to wait till February, it is still not a bad idea to get one when you can, even if it's in February."

The good news? It's not just that you should get your flu shot in February if you haven't already. You still logistically can get a flu shot in February because local resources make it as easy as possible.

"Flu shots are commonly available at pharmacies, primary care offices, urgent care clinics, community health centers and some workplaces," Dr. Dasgupta explains. "Many pharmacies accept walk-ins and insurance plans, making access fairly easy even later in the season."

Crucially, though, you won't walk right out of the pharmacy or doctor's office with peak protection. "It’s important to remember that it does take two weeks to build immunity after getting the shot," Dr. Richardson clarifies.

What Actually Happens When You Get a Flu Shot in February (And What Doesn’t)

There's been a lot of confusion lately on what flu shots do, which may have contributed to your hesitating to get yours earlier. However, doctors stress that getting your flu shot in February is still a safe and effective way to protect yourself during the virus's peak season (generally from December to February/early March).

"Flu activity can continue into early spring," Dr. Dasgupta tells Parade. "The exact timing varies year to year and by region, which is why late-season vaccination can still be worthwhile."

He says that the specific benefits of getting a flu shot in February are:

  • Less chance of getting the flu at all
  • Milder symptoms, fewer complications and lower risk of hospitalization if you do get the flu
  • Protecting those around you, especially vulnerable populations, such as infants, older adults and those with weakened immune systems

Here are a few things you don't need to worry about. "You cannot get the flu from the vaccine," Dr. Nachman says. "It is not a live vaccine, so it cannot give you the flu."

She notes you might feel a bit under the weather after the flu shot or even have a slight fever, but you haven't come down with the virus. "While we think of those as flu symptoms, they are really just immune response symptoms. Your body is now making antibodies to fight a real flu virus," she says. "In addition, there is no thimerosal [a mercury-containing organic compound] or preservative in any pediatric or adult single-dose vaccine, so the concern about it is not fact-based."

To find fact-based information, Dr. Nachman suggests using the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines and the American College of Family Physicians. And Dr. Richardson adds that your family doc can also provide reliable insights into the benefits of the flu shot and any other vaccines you have questions about.

When Is the Best Time To Get a Flu Shot?

It can vary by region and even profession. Generally, Dr. Nachman advises families to get the flu shot in October or early November. "There will be more than enough time to make an immune response," she reports. "With peak antibody production three to four months after the vaccine, they will be well covered for peak flu season."

If that ship has sailed, just keep this timing in mind for next year. In the meantime, head out to your doctor or local pharmacy to get your flu shot this February. "Vaccination later is still better than not at all," Dr. Dasgupta says.

3 Other Ways To Stay Safe During Flu Season

Getting the flu shot, including in February, is one of the safest and most effective ways to protect yourself and others from this nasty virus. Doctors also suggest layering on some other practical strategies, such as:

  • Hand hygiene. Washing your hands (and not touching your face) is always a good idea, but it's especially protective during flu season. "The flu spreads very easily through contact," Dr. Dasgupta says.
  • Get tested. If you feel ill, rule out (or confirm) it's the flu. "We have antivirals to treat you," Dr. Nachman reports, adding that providers can also give high-risk family members preventative medications.
  • Stay home if you're sick. It helps you and others. "It can be hard not to go back to your routine, but it’s better to rest," Dr. Richardson points out.

A New Frozen Find at Costco Is Making Weeknight Dinners Easy

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 9:45am

By the time February rolls around, the holiday break feels like a distant memory. After a long, cold day, dinner sometimes just needs to be simple and low-effort.

Costco is leaning into that reality with a new freezer find. Kirkland Signature Fully Cooked Crispy Chicken Wings have been spotted in stores and are already attracting attention for their generous 4-pound bag priced at $16.99.

The find was shared on February 2 by @costcowonders, and shoppers are taking notice not just for its size but also for how flexible these wings are.

@costcowonders

Costco just added Kirkland crispy chicken wings to the freezer section and they’re an easy go-to for game night, snacks, or quick meals that taste like you ordered out. The extra crispy coating and juicy chicken make them perfect right out of the oven or air fryer. Share this with someone who loves wings. @Costco Wholesale #costcofinds #Costcowonders #CostcoInfluencer #FoodTok #ChickenWings

One of the biggest draws is that they’re fully cooked, which means there’s no raw prep involved. They’re designed to go straight from freezer to oven or air fryer, making them an easy option when time is short. Because of that, they work just as well for a quick after-school snack as they do for dinner, especially for older kids or teens looking for something hot and filling without a lot of steps.

The wings come with Buffalo sauce packets on the side, but that’s not the only option you have. Since the sauce isn’t pre-coated, it’s easy to skip Buffalo altogether and use whatever you already like. Barbecue, garlic Parmesan, honey mustard, or even a simple dry rub are all easy swaps, which makes the bag feel more versatile than a single-flavor frozen item.

That flexibility is part of what helps these wings stand out in the freezer aisle. You’re not locked into one flavor or one occasion. The same bag can handle a weeknight dinner, a casual snack, or something quick to pull out when people are hungry, and patience is running thin.

What to Serve With Chicken Wings

Chicken wings pair well with almost any side, making them especially useful to keep on hand. A cool, crisp salad can balance out the richness, while sautéed vegetables or roasted potatoes help round out the meal. If comfort food is the goal, sweet potato fries or mac and cheese are always solid choices.

They also fit naturally into game day spreads, casual gatherings, or nights when everyone wants something familiar and easy to share. At $16.99 for a 4-pound bag, they’re a budget-friendly option when compared with restaurant wings or takeout, especially when feeding more than a couple of people.

For anyone looking to simplify weeknight meals or keep a dependable snack in the freezer, this Costco find offers a lot of flexibility with minimal effort.

Sean Connery Turned Down 'Silence of the Lambs' Over 'Disgusting' Role

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 9:42am

Like most major stars of his generation, Sean Connery turned down some significant roles in the course of his lengthy acting career.

From The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix to Harry Potter, the James Bond star wasn't one to hesitate when it came to refusing a role he didn't feel a natural inclination for, regardless of just how successful said movie might be either commercially or critically.

With that being said, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Connery flatly refused to appear in one of the most iconic horror films of the late 20th century, calling the role of The Silence of the Lambs' infamous fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter "too disgusting" for his taste.

According to an interview with Deadline,TheSilence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme once revealed that his first choice for the role of Hannibal Lecter was none other than Connery.

While the role eventually went to Anthony Hopkins, Demme believed Connery's natural charisma and undeniable screen presence could have translated well for the part of the chilling antihero.

“Sean Connery was the only other person I thought could be amazing for this,” the filmmaker said. “Connery has that fierce intelligence and also that serious physicality. I love Tony Hopkins, but Sean Connery could be amazing.”

Upon sending the movie's script to the Indiana Jones actor, however, Demme learned that Connery had a less-than-enthusiastic response to the role, leading the director to give up on his goal of casting Connery in the film and instead turning to Hopkins.

“Word came back shortly that he thought it was disgusting and wouldn’t dream of playing the part,” Demme said. “So, great, now we can go to Tony Hopkins.”

As it turned out, Hopkins' role in TheSilence of the Lambs wound up earning the veteran actor significant critical acclaim. Among his numerous accolades, Hopkins won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Actor, as well as a Golden Globe nomination in that same category.

Mastodon's Next Album?

Mastodon may be answering those calls sooner than later. At the start of 2025, drummer Bran Dailor told Metal Hammer that the group was poised to release a new LP, a concept album about "supernatural horror." But the split from cofounding member Brent Hinds and his fatal motorcycle accident seemingly shelved that project.

In October 2025, Kelliher told the Sixty Scales and the Truth podcast that Nick Johntson, whom the band had picked to fill in for Hinds on tour, was contributing to the making of Mastodon's new record.

"We've got like 20-some ideas," said Kelliher, per Loudwire. "So we'll demo the stuff at my house, we bring it to my studio with my engineer, and we bring in Nick and Joao [Nogueira], the keyboard player, and we start jamming the song and say, 'You wanna add something? Please add whatever you want in here.'"

Mastodon formed in Atlanta at the turn of the century, soon releasing their debut album, 2002's Remission. The album's sound was a blend of prog, southern and stoner rock, with flourishes of punk and industrial. Mastodon's sound put them at the forefront of the sludge metal genre, though they would take it to a new place with their second album: the sea.

Leviathan, released in 2004, was the band's breakout, earning Album of the Year honors from Revolver, Kerrang! and more. As a concept album based on Moby-Dick, Leviathan demonstrated Mastodon's capabilities in songwriting, storytelling, and performance. The album's opener, "Blood and Thunder," quickly became their signature song, one they play to close out their sets.

Since then, Mastodon has released six more albums, the most recent being 2021's Hushed and Grim.

In March 2025, Mastodon announced that after 25 years together, they and Brent Hinds had "mutually decided to part ways." Hinds was less amicable. He later claimed he was kicked out of the group, and continued to insult his former bandmates online.

On August 20, 2025, Hinds was killed in a motorcycle accident. The band publicly mourned their fallen friend at their first show after his death, with drummer Dailor saying that despite the turbulent way they parted, Hinds and the group were "brothers to the end. And we really loved each other, and we made a lot, a lot of very beautiful music together."

Sadly, Hinds was not included in the televised "In Memoriam" segment at the 2026 Grammy Awards, upsetting those who felt he deserved recognition.

Halle Berry Claps Back at Critics Who Say She 'Can't Keep a Man': 'Who Says I Want To?'

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 9:32am

Halle Berry is done playing the role of the "damsel in distress." For years, the Oscar winner found herself at the center of a media loop that focused more on her marital status than her career milestones. Now, the Bruised director and star is pulling back the curtain on why she stepped away from the spotlight — and how she finally found a partnership that works on her own terms.

For nearly ten years, Berry made a choice to retreat from the press circuit. The reason wasn’t a lack of projects, but rather a frustration with the repetitive nature of the public’s fascination with her personal life. “I pretty much stopped doing interviews for a decade because I got tired of the same old story,” she told The Cut. “It was always: ‘Poor Halle — Unlucky in Love Again.’”

The narrative reached a fever pitch following her third divorce, as critics began to question her ability to maintain a long-term relationship. “People started to say, ‘What’s wrong with her? She’s crazy. She can’t keep a man,’” Berry says. Instead of letting the noise get to her, she reframed the conversation entirely. “And I would always argue, ‘Who says I want to keep a man if he’s not the right man?’”

Halle Berry and Van Hunt: Inside Their Low-Key Romance

While the world was busy labeling her "unlucky," Berry was quietly building the foundation for what she describes as her most successful relationship to date. In 2020, amidst the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Berry was introduced to musician Van Hunt through his brother.

The pair took things slow—very slow. They spent four months texting and talking on the phone before ever meeting in person. That digital foundation paid off. Today, Berry doesn't hesitate to praise the connection they've built. “I’m in the best relationship I have ever had,” she says.

Berry is no longer interested in the "failed relationship" trope. When asked to rewrite the headlines that have followed her for decades, she took a moment to reflect on her journey, closing her eyes to find the right words. Her new mission is clear: Berry wants the world to know she is in the driver's seat of her own life. “Halle Berry Is Not a Damsel in Distress,” she suggests as a new headline for her life now. After a pause, she adds, “Halle Berry Is Not a Victim of Failed Relationships.”

For Berry, the end of a marriage isn't a sign of weakness or a lack of effort, but a refusal to settle for less than she deserves. Closing out her thoughts on the matter, she offered one final, definitive headline for her life today: “Halle Berry Never Said It’s Anyone Else’s Fault.”

PepsiCo Snack Prices Are Changing—What Shoppers Need to Know

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 9:23am

PepsiCo is making 2026 the year of reduction, but now we know its efforts also include price cuts.

On Tuesday, PepsiCo announced it would be lowering the cost of several fan-favorite snack brands—and it all comes just in time for Super Bowl LX on Sunday, Feb. 8. So whether you're hosting to watch the big game, the ads, or just using it as an excuse to hang out with your friends, some of your favorite chips will cost you less.

“We’ve spent the past year listening closely to consumers, and they’ve told us they’re feeling the strain,” Rachel Ferdinando, CEO, PepsiCo Foods U.S., explained in a Feb. 3 statement. “Lowering the suggested retail price reflects our commitment to help reduce the pressure where we can. Because people shouldn’t have to choose between great taste and staying within their budget.”

PepsiCo Cuts Prices on Several Fan Favorites: Lay’s, Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos, and More

According to the recent announcement, PepsiCo plans to slash the prices "by up to 15 percent" on beloved brands like Lay’s, Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos—including its relatively new line of chips free from artificial flavors and colors—and more.

Customers won't have to wait to see the price rollback, as a company representative confirmed to Parade via email that the new, lower prices are "on shelves now." That said, retailers are responsible for setting their own prices of PepsiCo products, so in-store prices may vary (and, ultimately, could mean that customers could see more than 15 percent in savings on their favorite sublines).

Related: PepsiCo Foods Puts ‘Bold Twist’ on Classic Chips With New Flavor Swap Line

Nothing about the recipe has changed, per PepsiCo, which affirms all products will "remain the same size, quality and taste," with the only change being the company's focus on affordability. So your go-to sips and snacks should taste the same—if not better, now that they're cheaper.

“Reducing prices on many consumers’ favorite snacks is an important action,” Ferdinando added. “We’ll continue taking steps that keep our most loved brands within reach, while maintaining the same quality and same taste that consumers love."

Even better, PepsiCo called it "a long-term commitment" to delivering greater value to consumers and "a strong signal" that the company understands the challenges consumers face as prices continue to rise on everyday finds like beef and chocolate at grocery stores, as well as on necessities from popular retailers (including IKEA, Ross, and even streaming services like Spotify and Paramount+), so it has no plans to raise prices any time soon.

This is the latest major cut from PepsiCo, with the company announcing in December that it would be reducing the number of SKUs (stock-keeping units, or unique products) in 2026. While it's still unclear which SKUs will be cut, PepsiCo said it expects to eliminate "nearly 20 percent" of its SKUs, and preliminary reports suggest it will "cut back on unnecessary drink variations." That said, nothing has been formally announced just yet, so as soon as we know more, you will, too.
