Alien 3's 'Lost' Assembly Cut Just Landed on HBO Max After 30 Years

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:39am

David Fincher became one of the most respected directors in Hollywood. He got there in spite of Alien 3, not because of it.

The 1992 sequel, and Fincher's feature debut, was a production disaster by almost any measure. The script changed constantly. The budget was repeatedly slashed. By multiple accounts, Fincher was effectively fired three times during filming, with the studio overriding his decisions at nearly every turn. When it was over, he walked away and never looked back. He has spoken about the experience as one of the worst of his professional life, and he declined to participate when Fox later sought a director's cut for home video release.

That refusal is how the Assembly Cut came to exist. Unable to get Fincher involved, the studio assembled an alternate version themselves in 2003, using existing footage, deleted scenes, and extended sequences, releasing it on the Alien Quadrilogy DVD box set where it remained, largely inaccessible to casual viewers, for more than two decades.

That changed on April 6, when Alien 3: The Assembly Cut suddenly appeared on HBO Max.

The version runs 2 hours and 25 minutes, roughly 31 minutes longer than the 114-minute theatrical cut. The additions aren't cosmetic. The Assembly Cut restores a subplot involving a prisoner named Golic that explains, in terms the original never does, how the alien manages to escape a containment situation partway through the film. The restored scenes also change the shape of several supporting characters and expand the film's religious themes, Alien 3 is set on a prison planet populated by fundamentalist inmates, and the restored material makes that backdrop feel more relevant.

The Hollywood Reporter's Richard Newby, writing in the outlet's Alien franchise ranking, argued the Assembly Cut makes 'a strong case for the essential existence of Alien 3,' citing Sigourney Weaver's performance as her most emotionally raw in the series and the film's grimy, labyrinthine atmosphere as early evidence of the visual style Fincher would refine in Se7en and Fight Club.

It is not Fincher's director's cut. That version does not exist, and he has said he is too scarred by the experience to ever revisit it. But the Assembly Cut is the closest thing available, and for most fans who have seen both, it is the preferred way to watch the film.

HBO Max also added theAliens: Director's Cutand Alien Resurrection: Special Edition at the same time, giving the franchise's alternate versions a rare moment of visibility. For anyone who has only ever seen the version that opened in theaters in 1992, the Assembly Cut is a different movie in meaningful ways.

1964 Chart-Topping Hit Won a Grammy for 'Song of the Year' 61 Years Ago

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:27am

One of the earliest winners of a Grammy for "Song of the Year" was a 1964 title song that was created for a musical that became infamous on the Broadway stage. With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and vocals byLouis Armstrong, the hit track won a Grammy and long-term recognition.

In 1964, Herman developed a musical titled Hello, Dolly based on Thornton Wilder's 1983 farce The Merchant of Yonkers. It followed a character named Dolly Gallagher Levi, a matchmaker, who travels to Yonkers, New York, to find an unmarried and miserable millionaire, Horace Vandergelder, a match. The musical starred Carol Channing in the leading role and started its run in Detroit before hitting Broadway.

Hello, Dolly ended up being a legendary Broadway hit and won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical. Alongside the musical, it's legedendary main theme track of the same name also gained its own accolades.

"Hello, Dolly" was written by Herman and performed by Armstrong, a jazz trumpeter and vocalist. At the behest of his manager, Armstrong performed a demonstration of the track in December 1964 for the song's publisher. It was meant to be used as a promotion for the Broadway show, and ended up being published as a commercial single when the show debuted.

The track ended up being Armstrong's most successful single of his career, having topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts at No. 1 and beating The Beatles. Armstrong also became the oldest artist to reach the top of the charts on Billboard at the time, and topped the adult contemporary charts. Its popularity soon led the track to receive a Grammy for Song of the Year at the 7th annual awards, and Armstrong to win Best Vocal Performance, Male.

Hello, Dolly, the musical, was later adapted into a film by 20th Century Fox and won three Oscars, including Best Score. Armstrong returned for the 1969 screen adaptation, singing part of "Hello, Dolly" alongsideBarbara Streisand. The popular track did have a few hiccups when it was involved in a lawsuit, where Mack David claimed it was a copyright infringement of his "Sunflower" song from 1948. Herman stated he had never heard the song before creating the musical track, but ultimately decided on a settlement for the sake of the show and movie.

Armstrong's "Hello, Dolly" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.

'Sunrise on the Reaping' Trailer: How To Find Young Mags of 'The Hunger Games'

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:24am

We're getting closer to November 20, which is the premiere date for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The book by Suzanne Collins is about Haymitch Abernathy's time in the Quarter Quell. He's 16, and we see more characters from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The new trailer shows more of the action movie and character. But young Mags has a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance. Here is how to find her.

Who Is in ‘The Hunger Games’ Cast?

April 13's trailer teases a secret plan to stop the games, which is closer to the story of Catching Fire. Mags Flanagan is played by Lili Taylor and we see her hug Haymitch a minute and 14 seconds in the trailer.

Lynn Cohen originally played Mags in the second movie of the original trilogy. The elderly tribute didn't speak and came from the same district as Finnick Odair (Sam Clafin). He tried to carry Mags on his back. However, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) was hurt and needed to be carried too, so Mags sacrificed herself. She previously was a mother figure to Finnick.

Mags in the books is a mentor for District 12 because there weren't any winners available for the role. Wiress (Maya Hawke) is another mentor for them after recently winning a game decorated with mirrors.

Wiress is seen holding a box in the trailer, walking toward Ampert (Percy Daggs IV). Amanda Plummer previously played the older version of the character. She figured out the 75th Hunger Games layout was a clock. She was from the same district as Beetee (Jeffrey Wright).

In many ways, this new movie is most connected to Catching Fire. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta watched a video of the games, but the show heavily edited how things played out.

The Best Strategies To Protect Your Social Security From the IRS

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:23am

Taxes may be on everyone's mind right now because April 15 is rapidly approaching. However, you don't need to wait until tax time to think about how much money you're paying Uncle Sam each year.

That's because there are a few things Social Security recipients can do right now to lower their tax burden and keep more of their money. Keep reading to find out what they are.

Different Types of Retirement Income are Taxed at Different Rates

Before I get into how you can lower your tax burden on your Social Security income, it's important to first understand how the government views your money streams once you retire.

According to Fidelity, the government doesn't look at all of your earnings through the same lens once you retire, and instead, it separates them into different buckets, like:

  • Interest paid through bank accounts, CDs, and other non-retirement accounts is viewed as income, and taxed at the same rate you would've been taxed had you been paid those amounts by an employer
  • Distributions that come from your retirement accounts are taxed at the same rate as your current tax bracket
  • Dividends and gains from stocks you have owned for more than a year are taxed at rates of 0, 15, or 20 percent, depending on the amount of taxable income you have and your tax filing status
  • Other income, like qualified Roth IRA, Roth 401(k), or Health Savings Account (HA) payments are not taxed and doesn't count towards your Social Security taxes

So, now that you know how your taxes will work in retirement, here's how you can save.

Related: Apparently, the Future of Social Security Isn't All Doom and Gloom

Convert Your Savings Into a Roth IRA

Fidelity says the first step to lowering your tax burden involves turning that taxable interest into non-taxable distributions by converting your savings into a Roth IRA.

"You can choose to convert as much or as little as you want of your eligible traditional IRAs. This flexibility enables you to manage the tax cost of your conversion," Bradley Koval, director at Fidelity's Financial Solution said on the company's website. "A Roth IRA or Roth 401(k) can help you save on taxes in retirement. Not only are withdrawals potentially tax-free, they won't impact the taxation of your Social Security benefit. This is an important aspect of a Roth account that most people are not aware of.”

However, it's important to remember that the amount of money you convert is typically considered taxable, so you may want to work with a financial planner to find out the exact amount you'll need to convert to make it worth your while.

Related: Millions of Social Security Recipients May Receive Retroactive Payments—Here's What You Need to Know

Delay Your Social Security Claim

The other way to lower your tax bill...delay your retirement date. If you postpone your retirement for several months to years after you reach full retirement age (FRA), you'll be able to keep more of your Social Security benefits.

That number amounts to 8 percent each year after your FRA, up to age 70. But there's a catch: you may find yourself needing to rely more on those other types of retirement benefits in the meantime, which can also impact your tax burden. Again, meeting with a certified financial planner to discuss these options and determine which would work best for your financial situation is highly recommended. Not just because they can help you map out the best plan for your retirement goals, but also because they can help you avoid making some costly tax mistakes at the same time.

1992 Hit Film Named No. 1 'Best-Selling Soundtrack' of All Time

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:21am

Some would argue that what takes an already good film to the next level is the musical soundtrack—something that helps the film live on long after the end credits have rolled and the screen has gone dark.

In 1992, The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, didn't just become one of the most beloved films ever made; the soundtrack also earned a new record, and it's one that it still holds, 34 years later: No. 1 best-selling soundtrack of all time.

In November of that year,The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album arrived alongside the movie's release. It was a global box office hit, pulling in over $400 million worldwide. But it was the music that lingered. From the opening notes, the soundtrack didn’t feel like a typical movie tie-in. It felt like an event. Houston contributed six tracks, essentially turning half the album into a powerhouse solo project, while still weaving in other artists to build a cinematic soundscape.

The Song That Made History

Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You”—originally written by Dolly Parton—became a cultural phenomenon. (Currently, it has 1.8 billion views on YouTube.) The ballad didn’t just top charts; it owned them, spending 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming the best-selling single ever by a female artist. The song’s slow, a cappella opening, followed by a tidal wave of vocals created one of the most recognizable moments in music history. And it drove fans straight to the album.

The project also included standout hits like "I Have Nothing," "I'm Every Woman," "Run to You," and worship song, "Jesus Loves Me."

The soundtrack sold over 45 million copies worldwide, spent 20 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and became the first album in the SoundScan era to sell over 1 million copies in a single week. It even swept awards shows, including taking home the Grammy for Album of the Year.

And unlike modern albums boosted by streaming, these were largely pure sales—CDs, cassettes, and vinyl purchased by listeners who couldn’t just press play on demand. The result became a staggering lead over every other soundtrack in history. Even iconic albums like Dirty Dancing and Saturday Night Fever trail behind by millions.

1950 Hit Film Ranked Among 'Best Movies of All Time'

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:21am

"Backstage is where the real drama plays out."

What is your favorite decade of movies? Some of the most critically acclaimed dramas and musicals hail from the 1950s, such as Sunset Blvd. (1950), Singing in the Rain (1952) and All About Eve (1950).

The latter is currently celebrating 75 years since it cleaned up at the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture along with:

  • Best Director (Joseph L. Mankiewicz)
  • Best Supporting Actor (George Sanders)
  • Best Screenplay (Mankiewicz)
  • Best Costume Design – Black and White
  • Best Sound Recording

The timeless drama film centers on a night when Margo Channing (Bette Davis) entertains a surprise dressing-room visitor: her most adoring fan, the shy but wide-eyed Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). But as Eve becomes a fixture in Margo’s life, the Broadway legend soon realizes that her supposed admirer intends to use her and everyone in her circle, including Sanders' "acid-tongued critic" (as Criterion puts it) as stepping-stones to stardom.

Criterion also dubs All About Eve "the most deliciously entertaining film ever made about the ruthlessness of show business," while Rotten Tomatoes ranks it at No. 12 on its list of 300 Best Movies of All Time. "Smart, sophisticated, and devastatingly funny, All About Eve is a Hollywood classic that only improves with age," reads the review-aggregation website's critics' consensus about the film.

The above-mentioned Sunset Blvd.also makes the list, another 1950s masterpiece that turns the lens on showbiz itself. The dark comedy won three Academy Awards, though it nominated for a whole lot more. It features a stellar cast led by William Holden and Gloria Swanson — and by the turn of the century, the American Film Institute ranked the tragic dark comedy near the top of its “Greatest American Movies of All Time” list.

As critics have attested, Sunset Blvd. is celebrated for its dark portrayal of Hollywood’s ruthless nature and the tragic fall of silent film stars, per IMDb.

8 Theme Parks That Still Feel Exactly Like They Did When You Were a Kid

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:15am

There is a certain kind of American theme park that refuses to "grow up." Not because it is stuck in time, but because it never needed reinvention in the first place. These are the places where the paint might fade a little, the wooden coasters creak a little louder, and the ticket booths still feel like they were designed for someone’s summer in 1987.

“We’re in the nostalgia business and have been since day one,” says Ken Parks, Corporate Vice President of Planning and Design, Six Flags Entertainment Group.

While mega-resorts chase immersion and technology, these parks stay rooted in something simpler: laughter, picnic tables, and rides that feel like memories rather than marketing. Many of them are still family-owned or deeply tradition-driven, and some have barely changed in decades.

Knoebels: The Free-Entry Park That Still Feels Like a Summer Fair

Opened in 1926 in Elysburg, PA, as a swimming and picnic grove, Knoebels Amusement Resort slowly grew into a full amusement park while keeping its original identity intact: family-owned, forest-shaded, and deliberately unpolished in the best way. The wooden coaster Phoenix, originally built in 1947 and relocated to the park in the 1980s, is still one of the most talked-about rides in the country for how smooth and old-school it feels at the same time.

Dutch Wonderland: A Storybook Park That Never Tried to Grow Up

Dutch Wonderland was designed in 1963 in Lancaster, PA, specifically for young families, and it has stayed remarkably true to that original idea. The castle entrance still greets you like a children’s book illustration. The rides still lean gently, featuring small coasters, boat rides, and kid-sized thrills instead of high-intensity drops. According to the park’s official history, it was intentionally built as a “Kingdom for Kids,” and that concept still defines nearly every corner of it.

Silverwood: A Roadside Park That Grew Without Losing Its Personality

Located in Kootenai County, Idaho, Silverwood Theme Park began in 1988 as a modest roadside attraction and has since grown into the largest theme park in the Northwest. But even as it grew, it never fully shed its early identity. The park still feels like a mix of county fair, classic midway, and old-fashioned Americana.

Valleyfair: Midwest Summer Energy That Never Left

Valleyfair opened in 1976 in Shakopee, Minnesota, and still carries the feel of a regional summer park, even with modern additions. Yes, it now has steel coasters. Yes, it has expanded over the decades. But the bones of it still feel familiar: open walkways, clustered rides, and that unmistakable Midwest amusement park energy where families show up early and stay until the lights come on.

Idlewild & SoakZone: A Forest Park That Still Feels Like a Fairy Tale

Idlewild & SoakZone in Ligonier, PA, is one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the United States, dating back to 1878 when it began as a picnic and leisure ground. Storybook Forest remains one of its defining experiences, blending physical spaces with classic children’s storytelling environments. The park itself has evolved carefully over time, adding water attractions and modern rides without losing its original wooded character.

Canobie Lake Park: Lakeside Nostalgia That Never Switched Eras

Canobie Lake Park began in the late 1800s in Salem, New Hampshire as a trolley park and still feels tied to that lakeside origin story. Even today, the park maintains its classic structure, with midway games, shaded paths, and rides set against natural water views rather than heavy theming or vertical expansion. Its long-running identity as a family amusement park is still central to how it operates and markets itself.

Waldameer Park & Water World has been operating in Erie, Pennsylvania, since the 1890s, and that history is still visible in how it is laid out and experienced. Located right on Lake Erie, it blends a traditional amusement park with a water park while maintaining a layout that prioritizes space, shade, and simplicity over modern spectacle. The park’s official history highlights its long-standing commitment to family recreation and community-based entertainment, as evidenced by how unchanged its overall feel remains compared to larger corporate parks.

Lagoon: A Living Amusement Park That Grew Around Its Past

Lagoon Amusement Park in Farmington, Utah, is one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the United States, with roots dating back to the late 1800s. Despite its size today, it still feels oddly intimate in sections. The layout has expanded over time, but instead of wiping away older structures, it layered new attractions into the existing footprint. Its long history and continuous family ownership are often cited as reasons it retains such a distinct, old-school amusement park atmosphere even as it adds modern rides.

Why These Parks Stick With Us Long After We Leave

These parks did not stand still, but neither did they rush to reinvent themselves every time trends shifted or new competitors raised the stakes. Instead, they evolved slowly and visibly, layer by layer, in a way that you can actually feel when you walk through them.

That kind of change is rare because it requires restraint. It means choosing to add rather than erase. To build around memory instead of over it. And for visitors, especially those returning years later, that creates something powerful: continuity.

'Orange is the New Black' Star Details Alleged Sexual Assault by Katy Perry: 'I Projectile Vomited'

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:11am

The Melbourne Spice Market nightclub in the late 2000s isn't exactly where you’d expect a pop-culture nuclear bomb to drop two decades later. But Ruby Rose just blew the doors off the place. In a series of emotional posts on Threads, the Orange Is the New Black star leveled a heavy accusation at Katy Perry. The claim? Alleged sexual assault.

Rose described a night in her early 20s where Perry allegedly bypassed a standard greeting and went straight for a physical violation.

"She didn’t kiss me. She saw me 'resting' on my best friends lap to avoid her and bent down, pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting vagina on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomitted on her."

Rose, now 40, admitted she retold the encounter as a "funny little drunk story" because she claims she was trying to navigate a career in the industry. Then came the alleged leverage. According to Rose, Perry agreed to help her secure a US visa later on.

So Rose claims she kept quiet.

"Katy Perry sexual assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a shit what she thinks," Rose alleges. "After it I threw up on her. I told the story publicly but changed it to be a 'funny little drunk story' because I didn’t know how else to handle it. Later she agreed to help me get my US visa. So I kept it a secret."

Source: Ruby Rose, Threads

The internet came out swinging. One fan accused Rose of faking the story to settle a 2017 grudge involving Taylor Swift. The fan demanded charges and told Rose to expect slander lawsuits.

Rose’s response was to dare Perry’s legal team to send a process server to her front door.

"Yeah, not interested in filing a report over this," Rose shot back. "But she is more than welcome to sue me (she won’t, because it happened, I have photos and it was literally in public and witnessed by multiple people)."

Discovery in a defamation case is a two-way street. If Perry sues, Rose gets to show those alleged photos to a judge. And Rose hinted that there is plenty more in the vault from the years before Perry’s "silly song."

Source: Ruby Rose, Threads

Rose pointed out that woman-on-woman abuse is difficult to talk about. "As a woman, for a myriad of reasons, opening up about W on W violence and sexual abuse, seems to be 100 times harder than speaking about the male predators, at least for me," she shared.

Rose says her allegations aren't about a "feud,” it’s about the "psychological manipulation" Rose says she endured for nearly twenty years. The star says she’s looking to tell her story before it, in her words, "gives you cancer."

A rep for Perry's representatives issued the following statement about Rose's statements: "The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous reckless lies.  Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named."

With so many books coming out on April 14, 2026, choices can get a little overwhelming. How do you know what’s worth reading right away, and what’s worth holding off until a little later? It’s not always that easy, and more often than not, it depends on the genres you love the most.

There are romantasy, thrillers, and middle grade books that are more than worth checking out this week. We have the seven that you’ll want to start with!

Penguin Random House

‘The Tempest Blade’ by Danielle L. Jensen

When it comes to romantasy, Danielle L. Jensen has a whole series that we fell in love with. Well, it’s time for The Bridge Kingdom series to come to an end, with The Tempest Blade. Yes, you will want to catch up on the previous five books first if you haven’t, and it’s going to be worth it!

Ahnna is now on the run, but she needs to save her homeland. The problem is that her star-crossed lover, James, is determined to get justice for his father’s murder, and he is positive that Ahnna is the culprit. As he hunts her down, he starts to wonder if he is right after all. Can the heart and logic win out, or are the two destined to be the end of each other?

The Bridge Kingdom series has been an epic journey for Ahnna and James. It’s time to see if they will meet on the battlefield, or if they’ll find a way back to each other’s arms.

Penguin Random House

‘The Insomniacs’ by Allison Winn Scotch

What do you do when you can’t sleep? Well, for four strangers in The Insomniacs by Allison Winn Scotch, they end up at a diner. Well, three of them head there, where the fourth, Betty, is working as a waitress. Soon, the four form a friendship, but as one goes missing, there are questions about whether you can really get to know someone.

After all, we all only tell the stories that we want people to know. As the friends start to learn secrets about each other, their lives change and they have to face their own mistakes and problems.

This is great for those who love Only Murders in the Building and general stories of life and mystery. You’ll turn into an insomniac yourself as you end up hooked on figuring everything out before the friends do.

Penguin Random House

‘Chernobyl, Life, and Other Disasters’ by Yevgenia Nayberg

Trying to find a way to explain the Soviet Union history to middle graders isn’t always that easy. Chernobyl, Life, and Other Disasters by Yevgenia Nayberg is going to help. This graphic novel brings a fictionalized element to a very real tale.

Genya wants to be an artist when she grows up. She already has her plans for turning 11, but then things change in ways she never expected. On April 26, 1986, Genya’s police officer neighbor gets a call to say a town she’s never heard of is being evacuated. Nobody really knows what happened in Chernobyl, and this one young storyteller is curious.

The graphic novel is told from Nayberg’s real experiences growing up in the Soviet Union. It’s a creative way to bring up some hard-hitting topics in age-appropriate ways.

Amazon

‘Go Gentle’ by Maria Semple

Do you need a story about life? Go Gentle by Maria Semple needs to be on your list. It is a story of a woman who thinks she has it all figured out. Adora Hazzard is happy with her life as a a divorced single mom to a teenage daughter. Alone doesn’t mean lonely, as she has her “coven” of like-minded women.

That is until things change. As she comes across a charming stranger, she has to acknowledge that maybe she isn’t quite content with the way her life is. Is she willing to risk this life she has curated for something a little more?

We all get to these points in our life where we start to question everything we have and have wanted. Semple does an amazing job of exploring that with us.

Penguin Random House

‘The Lost Girl of Craven County’ by Emily Matchar

Do you need some historical fiction in your life? The Lost Girl of Craven County by Emily Matchar is set a decade into the Great Depression. Millicent Green is now considered an “old maid” at the age of 25, and her mother won’t have it. Millicent’s mother is determined to get her married off!

However, things take a turn when Millie goes out to run and errand and comes across a mute mystery woman unconscious on the ground. With no identification, Millie is sent on a path that is sure to uncover some of the most shameful parts of the 20th century as well as secrets from her rural North Carolina town.

Mixed in with the mystery is a story of female friendship. This would be classed as women’s fiction as well as historical fiction, and it’s more than worth the read.

Amazon

‘Japanese Gothic’ by Kylie Lee Baker

Listed as one of the most highly anticipated horrors of April 2026, Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker is the perfect story for those who want to really think. It’s told as a dual timeline, with one story taking place in 2026 and the other in 1877.

With ghosts and mysterious houses, only one of the timelines is the truth. One of the characters is a ghost, and you’ll read through the story wondering with each one whether they’re reliable or not.

Horror stories take on multiple forms. Japanese Gothic is one that will sit with you for a time afterward.

Penguin Random House

‘A Deal with the Elf King’ by Elise Kova

This is one of those novels that you may have already read. It was originally self-published during the pandemic, and there is an entire series out. The great news is you can read the series in any order that you want, as each book is a standalone, and now A Deal with the Elf Kingby Elise Kova is getting an official release with a publisher!

The novel follows Luella, a human who finds herself having to marry the Elf King. However, this isn’t just because of the agreement humans and the Elf King have made in the past. Midscape is dying and Luella has the exact power needed to save it, and now she needs to figure out how to harness it and help.

It’s perfect for romantasy fans. Even if you’ve already read it, there’s new cover art that is worth adding to your collection.

1972 Hit Ranked No. 1 ‘Best Classic Movie of All Time’ Became a Timeless Cult Favorite

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:52am

When it comes to legendary films, The Godfather often comes out at the top of everyone's rankings.

The 1972 film, which is based on Mario Puzo's epic novel, depicts the Italian-American Corleone family as they navigate organized crime. Starring Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone, the patriarch of the family, the film follows his sons as they attempt to follow in their father's footsteps.

In a new ranking of the "Best 300 Movies of All Time" on Rotten Tomatoes, The Godfather tops the list at number one. So why does the legendary film manage to score that coveted top slot?

"One of Hollywood's greatest critical and commercial successes, The Godfather gets everything right; not only did the movie transcend expectations, but it also established new benchmarks for American cinema," the description read. Here, here!

Did The Cast Know The Godfather Would Be a Hit?

During the production of the first Godfather film, the actors knew the film was going to be a hit. That included Al Pacino, who played the youngest Corleone brother, Michael, James Caan, who played hothead Sonny, John Cazale, who played the bumbling Fredo, and the acclaimed actor Brando as Corleone.

“We all knew it — this was going to hit big. Those were good times,” Robert Duvall previously told PEOPLE, adding that there was no doubt that Brando’s performance as the leader of the family would receive endless acclaim: “He was our hero coming up, a king.”

Robert Duvall's Biggest Regret From The Godfather

While the character of Tom Hagen wasn’t an official member of the Corleone family, he was like an adopted son to Vito Corleone since childhood and served as the family’s lawyer and consigliere. Looking back on the role of Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola‘s first groundbreaking Godfather film, Duvall previously kept his sense of humor, telling PEOPLE back in 2003 that his one regret about the role was that “I just wish I had a better hairpiece.”

Duvall reprised his role as Hagen in the second Godfather film. However, he did not return for the 1990 film, The Godfather Part III, and it is briefly mentioned in the film that the character of Hagen has died.

A Nationwide Focus on Community and Connection

According to the company's announcement, the initiative will highlight local stories, cultural moments, and the communities that shape American identity. Coca-Cola plans to work with organizations nationwide to support events and programming tied to the 2026 anniversary.

The rollout is expected to include activations in cities and towns across the U.S., with an emphasis on local participation as part of the larger national celebration. The effort is designed to connect national themes with community-level experiences, allowing local organizations a role in how the milestone is recognized.

Each mini-can features a design tied to one of the 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, highlighting local symbols—from Georgia's peach to cheese in Wisconsin.

Designed for collecting and sharing, the packaging also connects to interactive experiences. By scanning participating products, consumers can unlock prizes and rewards, including the chance to win a new Jeep and other travel-inspired experiences.

The campaign is anchored by a new creative platform, "Drink in America," which highlights everyday moments, local traditions, and shared experiences across the country.

"For nearly 140 years, Coca-Cola has been part of the American experience," said Stacy Jackson, vice president of Coca-Cola Trademark, North America. "From our collectible America250 mini-cans to our community outreach initiatives, our goal is to uplift Americans throughout every zip code and create optimism for the future."

What to Expect Next

In addition to the commemorative packaging, Coca-Cola is also tying the campaign to a nationwide sweepstakes and interactive experience.

By scanning participating America250 products, consumers can enter for a chance to win prizes, including an $80,000 vehicle credit toward a Jeep, a range of travel experiences, and 250th Anniversary collectibles.

The promotion also includes an instant-win component and a larger "Collect the Country" experience, where users can scan products to unlock entries and rewards tied to different destinations and events.

More details, including additional prizes and experiences, are expected to roll out as the campaign continues. As more details are released, the campaign will likely take shape through a combination of local programming and broader national participation opportunities.

Millions of Social Security Recipients May Receive Retroactive Payments—Here's What You Need to Know

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:35am

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is responsible for sending out Social Security payments to everyone who receives them each month. However, it looks like some folks are going to get a lot more than they bargained for in their next payment, thanks to the date that they actually filed to receive their first payments.

Curious to know if you're one of the millions of people who could be owed an bigger than normal check from Uncle Sam? Keep reading to find out whether you qualify for back pay and, if so, what you need to do to get your money.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

The Social Security Administration May Owe You Money

According to Newsweek, millions of people may be owed money by the SSA. It sounds like the windfall is going to people who waited until well after their full retirement age (FRA) before starting benefits.

That means if you reached your FRA, but kept working for any period of time after that, you could be owed retroactive payments from the date you would've hit your FRA to the date you finally filed. For some, those payments could add up quite nicely, totaling thousands of dollars in retroactive payments.

FRA is 67 for those who were born in 1960 or after, so if you'll have 67 candles on your birthday cake this year, you'll want to pay especially close attention to this news.

Related: The 5 Best States For Social Security Tax Breaks In 2026

How to Receive Backed Social Security Payments

Think you may fall into this group? If so, you'll need to reach out to the SSA to ask the administration to backdate your start date to when you reached FRA, which will trigger the lump-sum payment for the months that you missed.

However, there is a catch. The SSA will only allow you to claim up to six months' worth of these missed benefits, so if you waited until more than six months after you reached your FRA to file, you will only be able to collect half a year's worth of payments.

Related: This Genius Simple Move Could Give You Bigger Social Security Checks—for Life

Also, you cannot apply for these payments after you reach the age of 70. That's because Newsweek says this is when the delayed retirement credits no longer accrue, which means you won't be able to take advantage of this payday.

Lastly, by using this option, you could lower the amount of benefits you receive in the future, which means that you may only want to consider opting for the lump-sum payment if you need to get your hands on some quick money up front, instead of getting bigger checks every month for the remainder of your retirement.

"The trade-off is a permanently lower monthly benefit going forward," Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek in an interview. "Many people overlook this option, but those facing large expenses may find it useful if they understand the long-term impact."

So, depending on your financial situation, this windfall could be a game-changer or something that you're better off leaving alone.

At the beginning of the clip, Liz threw a pair of edible underwear at Emma at her bachelorette party. Their mother then picked it up, looked disgusted, and exclaimed, "Oh! It's, like, sugary..."

"That's a trip to the gynecologist right there," Liz's friend Carol Beasley declared.

During a sit-down with producers while sitting next to her fiancé (now husband) Brice Bolden, Liz boldly stated, "As much as we got a kick out of the edible underwear, I will not be wearing them."

"You never showed me that one," Brice pointed out.

"I threw it away," Liz explained. "There was no way for me to put them on. Literally, when I took them out of the package, they'd already broke." Still, Brice insisted that he would have liked to have seen them.

Back at the party, Liz held up a pair of thong underwear that said, "Grazing Station" on the front.

"Brice is just gonna get a kick out of these," Liz said. "I just should have put this in the book and been like, 'This is what all the girls brought me. Which one's your favorite? I'll wear it on the wedding day.'"

Suddenly, a man dressed as a police officer knocked on the door.

Amber explained to producers, "So Liz might think these panties are the surprise. But, we've actually got something even spicier coming."

"Oh my god!" Liz exclaimed after the knock. She then hid her face in embarrassment, protesting, "Y'all did not." Meanwhile, someone at the bachelorette party joked, "Did you pay your car ticket?"

As the "officer" entered the Johnston home, he said, "How's it going? I'm here to arrest Elizabeth."

Giggles then erupted from the bachelorette party attendees, and someone said, "There she is, right there!" as the scene ended.

Beloved ‘80s ‘Webster’ Star Emmanuel Lewis, 55, Looks Happy and Healthy in Rare Sighting

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:23am

Emmanuel Lewis won the hearts of America in the title role on Webster. But several decades later, the beloved sitcom star is still going strong!

Lewis, 55, kicked off his role on the hit series in 1983, playing a young boy who loses his parents in a car accident and is adopted by an NFL pro, played by Alex Karras, and a stylish socialite, played by Susan Clark. The series was a hit and a staple of the '80s for several seasons. While Lewis lives in Atlanta, he's rarely in the spotlight. However, a lucky friend ran into him on the street, providing us with an update on the actor's life.

"You never know who you'll run into in the streets of Atlanta. For those who watched or remember the show WEBSTER from the 1980s... Great running into @IAmEmmanuelLewis and his team! Many blessings and thank you for showing love to my mom and church family," the friend shared, posing for a photo alongside Lewis, who sports the same smile that he did back in his sitcom days.

Karras and Clark, who played Katherine Calder-Young Papadopoulos and George Papadopoulos, the couple who take Webster in, ultimately became a couple in real life. They married in 1980 and stayed together until he died in 2012. Upon his death, Lewis shared a message of condolences with E! News.

"My heartfelt condolences goes out to Susan, Katie, George, Renny, Peter, and the entire Karras & Clark family," Lewis said.

An Incredible Music Video Cameo

Lewis has built a successful career for himself in adulthood. He is the President and Ambassador of the Radio, Music & Film Alliance of Georgia, which works "to create a platform that celebrates the profound impact of music and cinema on our lives." But we would surely be mistaken if we didn't mention his delightful cameo in Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz's music video for "I Don't Give A (feat. Mystikal & Krayzie Bone)." '90s Actor, Who Appeared in One of the Greatest Movies of All Time, Turns 76

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:11am

Before becoming a familiar face in some of Hollywood’s most iconic films, William Sadler quietly built a career that would eventually place him in one of the greatest movies of all time.

The actor, best known for his work on Die Hard 2, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, The Shawshank Redemption and more, turned 76 years old on Monday. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Sadler started his acting career playing small supporting characters in many TV shows and films, as well as performing in various Broadway productions in the 1980s.

Sadler is best known as a character actor, meaning they specialize in playing unusual, eccentric, or interesting characters in supporting roles, rather than leading ones. His best-known film roles mostly took place in the 1990s, thanks to Die Hard 2, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey,The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption, the latter considered "one of the greatest movies of all time."

The 1994 drama follows Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover, and is sent to a tough prison. However, only Andy knows he didn't commit the crimes. While there, he forms a friendship with Red (Morgan Freeman), and experiences the brutality of prison life, adapts and helps the warden in the span of 19 years. Sadler played Heywood, a member of Red's gang of long-term convicts, a friend to Andy and a prominent inmate within the prison population.

Described by Harvey Brownstone in an interview from three weeks ago, Haywood is "fascinating, because he wasn't a bright guy," but Sadler "never turned him into a caricature." Brownstone asked the actor what his thought process was at the time.

"One of the things I decide about a character early on is how bright they are, and I sort of have this dial where you can turn it down and down," Sadler explained. "What happens is they see less and less and less of what's going on around them, and then they can only see what's right in front of them."

Throughout his career, Sadler has appeared in four films that were adapted from Stephen King books —The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist and Salem's Lot — and got that connection through director Frank Darabont. Despite being in many King films, he has only met the author once at a film screening.

The Shawshank Redemption was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Freeman for Best Actor.

According to The Movie DB, Sadler has been featured in over 100 movies and 57 TV shows. After The Shawshank Redemption came out, Sadler continued to appear in many films throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including Purple Heart, Last Day of Summer and more. He also portrayed President Matthew Ellis in various Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, including Iron Man 3 and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2015–2016), and played Gino Fish in the Jesse Stone television films.

After a 50-year career, Sadler is still active in the industry. Recently, he appeared in The Rookie, The Good Fight, 'Salem's Lot, and A Stage of Twilight. He is also releasing music, with plans for a second album, William Sadler's Greatest Hits, Volume Three, a follow-up to his 2023 debut album, The Kitchen Tapes.
