The Night Dick Van Dyke Saved Mary Tyler Moore From Becoming a Has-Been

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 6:11am

Hollywood loves a funeral. In 1969, the industry was already starting to hum the dirge for Mary Tyler Moore’s career. Hard to believe now, but the woman who defined the independent female lead character was considered a one-hit wonder after her post-sitcom film career stalled. Then came the TV specialDick Van Dyke and the Other Woman.

It aired April 13, 1969 and it changed her career.

Moore had spent years as Laura Petrie, the wife in the capri pants who cried 'Oh, Rob!' with a lilt that made it charming. But when the curtains closed on The Dick Van Dyke Show, the magic didn't follow her. She did a musical called Thoroughly Modern Millie and a few dramas. Then the entertainment industry started whispering: maybe Moore was a sidekick. A relic of the early sixties.

But Dick Van Dykeknew better. He invited her onto his musical variety special and ttreated her like an equal, not a guest star.

The two of them stepped onto the stage and moved like they were wired into the same nervous system. They sang and danced through intricate routines that would make modern performers dizzy. Moore wasn't "the wife" anymore. Moore had a stage presence that made viewers remember Laura Petrie while also showcasing her range.

CBS executives were watching from the wings and their offices and saw the performance of a woman who could carry a show without a husband in the frame. Because of that hour of television, an idea grew, later turning into The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

The special proved she had the gravitas for her own show.

“Outside of her family, I don’t think there was anyone more proud of her than I was.” Van Dyke later said about their partnership. That talent was never in question for the fans, but the suits needed a nudge. The Other Woman was that shove. It stripped away the 1950s wife persona and offered a peek at a modern woman ready for the 1970s.

Moore caught her second wind in a pair of dance shoes, proving the suits wrong before the credits even rolled.

Guests Will Notice Major Changes at Universal CityWalk Starting This Week

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 6:10am

If you’re heading to Universal Orlando this week, you’re going to notice the "vibe shift" at CityWalk almost immediately. While the resort has spent the last year celebrating the massive success of Epic Universe, it’s officially time for the "preview" era to end. Tomorrow, April 13, the high-tech Epic Universe Preview Center is closing its doors for good. But for those of us who live for a bit of nostalgia, the silver lining is huge: the Universal Legacy Store is officially coming home to reclaim its original storefront later this month.

For the uninitiated, the Legacy Store isn't just another gift shop; it’s a "prop graveyard" in the best way possible. Before it went on hiatus to make room for the Epic models, it was the go-to sanctuary for fans of "extinct" attractions. Walking in is like a trip through a cinematic time machine. You can expect to see incredible "behind-the-scenes" pieces like original ride vehicle models from Kongfrontation and Earthquake, plus actual props from Jaws and Back to the Future: The Ride.

It’s the kind of place where you can find a Mold-a-Rama machine dedicated to the world’s most famous shark or spot a prop gun from Terminator 2: 3D. It’s "refined-and-ready" nostalgia that reminds you why you fell in love with Universal in the first place.

However, not every update is getting a standing ovation. In a move that has some late-night snackers feeling the sting, the Burger King Whopper Bar is set to close its doors on April 21. While the replacement is a brand-new Five Guys (slated for this summer), social media is already buzzing with "nugget nostalgia." For many families, those Whopper Bar chicken nuggets were the ultimate post-ride "budget luxury" snack to grab on the way back to the car. While Five Guys is a major quality upgrade for the burger-and-fries crowd, it’s a bittersweet goodbye for fans of that specific "BK" convenience.

Of course, this is all setting the stage for the even bigger changes, like the 2027 arrival of Luke Combs’ Category 10. This massive, three-story waterfront venue is going to bring a whole new energy to the district with live music and spirits inspired by the country superstar’s hits.

Whether you’re stopping in to pay your respects to the Jaws props or grabbing one last Whopper, this week is a reminder that even a year after the portals opened at Epic, Universal is still a work in progress—balancing the high-tech future with the soulful, retro "Legacy" that keeps us all coming back.

You Can Now Win a National Geographic Expedition to Alaska or the Galápagos Worth Up to $60,000

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 6:00am

If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling through travel photos and pausing on a shot of a blue-hued glacier in Alaska or a giant tortoise in the Galápagos, you’ve probably done the "price tag math." National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions are the gold standard of travel, but with prices often starting north of $7,000 to $11,000 per person, they usually stay firmly in the "someday" or "lottery win" category for most of us.

But this month, that "someday" could actually be 2026.

As part of Disney’s “Step into Wonder” Earth Month campaign, National Geographic has officially opened its annual sweepstakes, and the prize is exactly the kind of bucket-list journey you’ve likely been eyeing for years.

The sweepstakes isn't just offering a cruise; it’s offering a choice between two of the most iconic natural wonders on the planet for you and three guests. If you win, you have to make the ultimate travel decision:

  • Alaska’s Coastal Glaciers: An eight-day expedition through the fjords and wilderness of the Last Frontier. This isn't your standard "big ship" cruise; you’ll be on a specialized vessel designed to get into the remote nooks and crannies where whales and bears are the only locals.
  • The Galápagos Islands: A 10-day deep dive into the volcanic sanctuary that inspired Darwin. You’ll be snorkeling with sea lions and walking alongside species that literally exist nowhere else on Earth.

What makes a National Geographic trip a "dream" experience is the access. You aren't just left to your own devices with a map; the prize includes traveling with a full team of experts. We’re talking naturalists, historians and world-class photographers who are there to help you finally master your camera settings while a blue-footed booby poses five feet away.

The prize package is all-inclusive, covering:

  • Two double-occupancy cabins (so you can bring the whole family or your three best friends).
  • Round-trip airfare and transfers.
  • All meals and excursions listed on the itinerary.
How to Enter

Because this is a "daily entry" sweepstakes, your odds are better if you make it a habit. You can enter once a day at natgeo.com/earthmonthsweeps starting today through April 30, 2026.

And if you need a little more "expedition energy" to fuel your daily entries, Disney+ has released its Earth Month Collection, featuring the new series Secrets of the Bees and the upcoming Disneynature film Orangutan (premiering April 22).

1980 Soft Rock Smash Became a Chart-Topping Phenomenon

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 5:47am

In 1980, a soft-rock smash became a chart-topping phenomenon, becoming one of the biggest hits of the era and creating a defining moment in pop music history.

"Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross captured the breezy, polished sound that defined an era. The breakout hit propelled him to stardom and dominated radio airwaves across the country.

The song hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts in April of 1980 and remained on the charts for 22 weeks. It was further elevated by backing vocals from Yacht Rock legend Michael McDonald, one of the genre's most defining voices.

However, the song had a surprising backstory that few listeners knew about when they first heard it.

According to Cross's interview with Songfacts, the driver-friendly singalong song was in fact, written in a car. However, he had some help from an illegal substance to help him develop the lyrics.

"We were living in Houston at the time, and on the way down to Austin to record the songs, it was just a beautiful Texas day," Cross admitted. "I took acid. So I wrote the words on the way down from Houston to Austin on acid."

He added, "I grew up with a lot of cowboy movies. Serials and stuff, like The Lone Ranger and these cowboy serials, where they were always chasing the bad guy. And I lived in San Antonio near Mexico, so there was always this anarchistic allure about if you could get to Mexico, you could escape the authority."

Cross concluded, "Also, Mexico was a place where you could go down there and drink and do all this debauchery that as a kid, you think sounds really cool. So getting to the border in Mexico was a fascinating thing to me."

The connection to Michael McDonald came through Christopher Cross’s producer, Michael Omartian. After McDonald contributed backing vocals to Cross’s “I Really Don’t Know Anymore,” he was invited back into the studio to lend his voice to “Ride Like the Wind.”

"Ride Like the Wind" dominated the 23rd GRAMMY Awards, winning all of the major categories. Cross became the first singer and songwriter to sweep Album of the Year, Record and Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist.

The song is also poised for a resurgence with a younger audience after being featured in the trailer for the upcoming season of Euphoria, starring Zendaya. Cross even shared the moment on his official Facebook page.

Christopher Cross is actively touring throughout 2026. He is embarking on a major North American summer tour with Toto and The Romantics.

Spiritual Psychologist Reveals: This Is What It Means if You Keep Seeing Deer Outside

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 5:41am

You don't have to be deeply spiritual to recognize that the universe is full of signs. Whether you became more attuned to them after losing a loved one or you're simply open to the possibility of these special, otherworldly signals, there are plenty of them just waiting to be found as you go about your business on a daily basis. Most of these signs have symbolic meaning behind them, and Parade was particularly curious to know what it means if you keep seeing deer outside, so we consulted a spiritual psychologist to weigh in on the topic.

On our quest for answers, we chatted with Dr. Marina A. Smirnova, Ph.D., a full professor of psychology and the director of Consciousness, Spirituality and Integrative Health (CSIH) Specialization at Saybrook University. She is especially fascinated by contemplative spirituality, mystical and esoteric traditions, and contemplative practices. The psychologist also has expertise in the following areas: dream studies, transpersonal psychology, personal mythology and altered states of consciousness.

Thanks to Dr. Smirnova's insight below, you'll gain a better understanding of the beautiful symbolism that deer can carry with them. You may even begin to appreciate their presence more once you realize the spiritual meaning of a deer sighting outside of your house.

What Is the Spiritual Significance of Seeing a Deer?

Have you ever noticed that you tend to see certain signs and symbols at just the right moment in your life? For instance, if you're missing a loved one, a red cardinal might appear to show you that they're still here with you, just not physically anymore. It's a similar concept when you keep seeing deer everywhere.

"Seeing a deer is akin to seeing, befriending and being befriended by the healing,
regenerative
and numinous powers within and without," Dr. Smirnova states.

The spiritual psychologist says deer symbolize and may elicit "a sense of otherworldly receptivity that seems to lift the veil to some spiritual or transpersonal realities."

"For some experiencers, for instance, deer are liminal creatures who, functionally, serve as 'screen memories' that gently mask numinous encounter experiences with Non-Human
Intelligences (NHIs)," she explains.

What Does It Mean When a Deer Appears Outside Your Home?

When a deer appears outside your home, Dr. Smirnova says the animal may serve as a "gentle messenger between the worlds or spiritual realms" since deer have a "liminal presence."

"It offers a heart-centered, healing presence, as well as an abiding sense of belonging and a potent intuitive insight," she shares. "Besides, it often presents us with and leads us towards our own regenerative capacities, fruitful receptivity, medial or magician-like awareness, transformative acumen, self-compassion and willingness to be."

Are Deer Considered a Good Omen?

Deer are absolutely a good omen, per Dr. Smirnova.

"By day and by night, in waking and in dreaming realities, deer invite us into our own mythic depths, yet in ways that are decisively personally and transpersonally favorable," she says.

She notes that deer can transmit and inspire "various ways of knowing," including "the art of sheer being, intention, intuition, embodied presence and telepathy."

What Is a Deer the Symbol Of?

Per Dr. Smirnova, deer generally symbolize the following things:

  • Regenerative intelligence
  • Transformation
  • Healing
  • Grace
  • Heartfulness
  • Divine favor
  • Otherworldly receptivity and favor
  • Gentleness of being and becoming
  • Unconditional belonging

'Back to the Future' Star (Lea Thompson) Refused to 'Fight Over Scraps' - What She Did Instead

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 5:24am

Lea Thompson saw Hollywood’s ugly ageism coming from miles away — but instead of accepting it, she pivoted and completely changed the game forever.

The "Back to the Future" actress, now 64, opened up to Woman's World about why she pivoted to directing 20 years into her successful acting career. Her reasoning? Absolute, pure strategic brilliance combined with the refusal to accept the limitations the industry places on women over 50.

"Only a small percent of roles in Hollywood go to women over 50, and out of that, the best parts are going to go to the people who have the most awards. A lot of the parts are ones I didn't want to do," Thompson openly shared.

Related: '90s Country King, 73, Leaves Fans Breathless at Recent Concert: 'He's Still So Hot'

Rather than waiting for opportunities to dry up, she asked herself one very important question: "How can I stay relevant in this business that I love without having to fight over scraps in the acting world?"

Her answer transformed her career trajectory entirely.

Lea Thompson's Directing Career Proves Women Can Rewrite Hollywood Rules

Thompson leveraged her existing position and expertise in the best way possible. She began directing with Hallmark's Jane Doe TV movie series in 2006, starting with Jane Doe: The Harder They Fall.

"Since I was already the star, they were much more inclined to give that work to me, and I really enjoyed it," she shared.

Two decades later, her directing credits include hit shows like The Goldbergs, Mom, Schooled and Will Trent. Meanwhile, she's continued acting in projects like Switched at Birth, and Scorpion — proving her concern about opportunities wasn't wrong, but her solution was perfect.

Thompson's perspective shift came from recognizing her own expertise in the field after decades in the movie industry. "It's very easy to think that everybody knows so much more than you do, especially when you're a woman, but after a while, you become the oldest person in the room, and I realized that in having done this for over 40 years, I already knew a lot," she explained.

Directing offers her intellectual challenges — "every project is like a brain teaser" — all while allowing her to mentor new rising talent rather than becoming completely disenfranchised about diminishing acting opportunities. Thompson made lemonade out of lemons.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

"It's also a chance to give back instead of getting bitter because the parts aren't so good," Thompson said. "I like to take younger people under my wing and teach them what I know. As we get older, it's important to be mentors and to pass on our knowledge."

Her approach represents something powerful and beautiful: women refusing to let industry limitations define career possibilities. Thompson didn't wait for Hollywood to change its treatment of women over 50. She created her own path on her journey instead of waiting for the industry to catch up.

"I still love acting, and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to act and direct," she said.

For women watching their opportunities narrow with age, Thompson's story offers hope and even a blueprint — recognize your talent and expertise, leverage your position, refuse to accept scraps, and create the career you deserve rather than settling for what's offered by society.

1979 One-Hit Wonder Ranked Among ‘Best Road-Trip Songs’ of All Time—A Timeless Gem You May Have Forgotten

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 4:25am

In 1979, Sniff ‘n’ the Tears had their first and only hit song with "Driver’s Seat.” The classic rock/new wave song, from the band’s 1978 album Fickle Heart, peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Driver's Seat" was popular enough to fuel a two-and-a-half-month tour for Sniff 'n' the Tears in the United States, per the British band’s official website.

Rolling  Stone ranked “Driver’s Seat” as one of the 50 best road trip songs of all time, on a list that included driving classics by Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, and Tom Petty. The outlet noted  the song featured “an acoustic guitar rhythm that never quit, even as it swerved around a Moog solo and the fragmented alienation of the lyrics.”

The song isn’t actually about driving

Sniff ‘n’ the Tears founding member Paul Roberts once revealed he started writing “Driver’s Seat” in the middle of the night when a noisy refrigerator kept him awake.

In an interview with Rock History Music, Roberts said he went for a walk at 2 a.m. and heard a riff in his head. He went home to work on the chords and later realized it was somebody else’s riff. “The O’Jays or somebody like that,” he said. “It was kind of a dance floor riff. So I just stayed with the rhythm guitar part and built the song on that.”

As for the lyrics, Roberts told Interviewing the Legends the song is not about driving a car. “It’s not about driving, no,” he said of the often-misunderstood theme. “It just means take charge of your own life, you know, get your act together, really.”

“The driver's seat, I mean, I think it just means not literally getting into a car but just taking control of your own destiny, that's all,“ he said during a 2024 appearance on the Professor of Rock podcast. “Don’t let other people, you know, decide your life. You decide your own life.”

Roberts elaborated in an interview with Vintage Rock. “Lyrically, the song is about picking yourself up after a breakup,” he said. “Musically, it started as a riff; behind the riff was a revolving chord sequence. I abandoned the riff when I realized it was a bit similar to something else, but the acoustic pattern was unusual and led to a certain propulsive tension that suited the fragmented state of mind implied by the words.”

Surprise success

Roberts also touched on the song’s success in the United States and other countries.

“I think everyone was surprised,” the band frontman said. “It didn’t conform to the obvious tropes, but everyone who heard it seemed to love it, so we knew we were onto something. I still couldn’t tell you what. … In some way, [“Driver’s Seat”] established an unrealistic precedent. It was a bit of a one-off.”

While the song wasn’t written about a car, Sniff ‘n’ the Tears enjoyed renewed success after Driver’s Seat” was used in a Pioneer car audio campaign in Holland in 1991, per the band’s website. The band has been reformed in various incarnations since.

In an interview with Athens Calling, Roberts reflected on the legacy of his classic song. “I think it has an energy and it’s unusual in its structure, the lyric is positive,” he said. “People seem to love it."

Why Carnival’s 'Category 1A' is the Best-Kept Secret in Cruising for 2026

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 4:10am

When it comes to booking a cruise, the "Interior" category is usually seen as the budget baseline—a windowless box designed for sleeping and little else. But for a dedicated community of travelers on Reddit and Cruise Critic, there is a "secret menu" item that offers a unique mix of value and surprising perks: the Category 1A stateroom.

Formally known by Carnival Cruise Line as the "Interior Upper/Lower," these rooms are the most affordable entry point to the high seas. While the layout is unconventional, savvy cruisers have discovered that these cabins often provide more functional floor space and, in some cases, even a view for a fraction of the cost of an Ocean View room.

Related: Carnival Just Added a New ‘Free’ Menu Option to These Ships—And It’s a Total Crowd-Pleaser

Unbeatable Value for Solos and Duo Travelers

The primary appeal of the 1A category is its pricing structure—especially for solo passengers. While most cruise lines impose a 200% single supplement—effectively charging one person for two—Carnival frequently reduces this for 1A cabins. In many cases, solo travelers can find supplements as low as 110% to 150%, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to cruise alone in 2026.

Traveling with a buddy? If you’re okay with cozying up in a bunk-bed configuration, the 1A is a total steal. It’s perfect for two friends who care more about the destination than the floor plan. In many cases, you can snag a 5-night cruise for under $500 per person, leaving you with plenty of extra cash for shore excursions or a drink package.

Related: Carnival Just Solved the Biggest ‘Time Tax’ of Your Cruise Vacation

The "Upper/Lower" Configuration Explained

Unlike a standard cabin where twin beds are pushed together to form a king, the 1A layout typically features one twin bed on the floor and one "upper" pullman bunk or a sofa bed. According to Carnival’s official stateroom descriptions, these rooms are roughly 185 square feet, but because only one bed occupies the floor, the "walking room" is significantly increased. This makes the cabin feel much larger than a standard Interior, providing extra space for a desk, chair and luggage storage.

Related: Carnival Issues a Warning Over the ‘Bonkers’ New Trend Taking Over Cruise Ships

The "Secret" Porthole 1As

The "holy grail" for budget hunters is the Interior Upper/Lower (Porthole) sub-category. On several ships, these rooms are located at the very front of the vessel and feature two round porthole windows. This allows guests to enjoy natural light and ocean views while paying the absolute lowest Interior rate.

Where to find these "view" rooms:

  • Carnival Dream, Magic, & Breeze: Staterooms 1203, 1204, 2211, 2212, 2216, and 2217 are confirmed to feature portholes.
  • Carnival Panorama & Horizon: These newer ships also maintain the "Interior Upper/Lower (Porthole)" category on lower decks like Riviera and Main.
  • Carnival Sunrise & Radiance: Look for staterooms like 1201, 1202, 1205, and 1206 for a similar porthole setup at a 1A price point.
Is This Real?

Yes. We’ve vetted current room rates and availability for 2026 and 2027, and asked Stewart Chiron, also known as The Cruise Guy, who confirmed Category 1A isn’t just a legacy listing—it’s an active booking category you can snag right now.

While veterans on Cruise Critic note that a 1A is often "slightly smaller than 4A [average about 15 feet smaller]," most agree they offer "adequate storage" and a unique charm for those who "always end up with the out of the ordinary." However, experts offer one major warning for those looking to gamble on a better room: "Please don't book a guarantee 'banking' on an upgrade." As one user pointed out after booking six 1A guarantees, they still "got the 1A cabin five times."

Current Availability & Pricing

While these cabins are famously found on Florida-based favorites like the Carnival Conquest and Carnival Sunrise out of Miami, or the Carnival Vista and Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral, their value truly shines on longer itineraries.

Long-Haul "Journeys": Savvy travelers have spotted 1A availability on 15-day Transatlantic sailings (like those on the Carnival Miracle) and repositioning cruises between the U.S. and Europe.

The Price Point: During shoulder seasons, solo cruisers are still reporting "white whale" deals where they secure 1A cabins for less than $350 per week.

The "Journeys" Advantage: On longer 10+ day sailings, the daily rate for a 1A often drops even lower than on standard Caribbean loops, making it the strongest value in the industry for those with a flexible calendar.

Editor’s Tip: Because there are only a handful of 1A cabins per ship (and they are the first to go during "Reduced Solo Supplement" promotions), you’ll want to filter your search specifically for "Interior Upper/Lower" as soon as the sailing dates are released.

Quote of the Day: Harrison Ford on Embracing Second Chances

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 2:45am

Harrison Ford is one of the biggest movie stars who ever lived—and the story of how it happened is just as poignant as the iconic characters he’s played. He was born in Chicago on July 13, 1942, and grew up as a shy, quiet kid. He went on to attend Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he battled depression. "I was a little lost," he revealed at the 2026 Actor Awards. "I was failing at school. I felt isolated, alone." But everything changed after he accidentally signed up for a drama class. "I found the company of people putting on plays," he said. "Storytellers—people I once thought were misfits and geeks—turned out to be my people."

In 1964, the aspiring actor moved to Hollywood seeking out a voiceover role. He didn't get the part, but stayed in town anyway. A short time later, he signed a contract with Columbia Pictures for $150 a week—a dream come true for any young actor. But it would soon become a nightmare after a studio executive told him, "You have no future in this business."

Instead of quitting, the future Indiana Jones continued auditioning. But because he had a wife and two young sons to support, he needed a way to keep the lights on between roles. So Ford checked out carpentry books from a local library and taught himself the trade. "Through carpentry, I fed my family and began to pick and choose from among the roles offered," he explained during the press tour for 1986's The Mosquito Coast. He built doors and custom furniture for some of Hollywood's biggest names and eventually landed a small role as hot-rodder Bob Falfa in 1973's American Graffiti—directed byGeorge Lucas.

A lot of people think that's how he landed the role of Han Solo in Star Wars, but they're wrong. In 1975, Ford was finishing up a carpentry job at Francis Ford Coppola's office when Lucas walked in to audition actors for his upcoming film. However, the director was adamant that he only wanted brand new faces and asked Ford to simply read with the actors during their auditions.

But instead of staying focused on these hopeful actors, Lucas found himself captivated by the way Ford read Han Solo's dialogue. He embodied everything the legendary director envisioned for the role and Lucas realized he was actually perfect for the part! The rest—as they say—is Hollywood history. Five Star Warsfilms were followed by another massive hit franchise—Indiana Jones—and then came more movie magic with The Fugitive, Air Force One and Blade Runner.

But after so many decades as a leading man on the big screen, Ford made a change he never saw coming: He read the script for a new Apple TV comedy called Shrinking and decided to go after the role. "I had never done anything like this before," he said during a 2023 SAG-AFTRA panel. "And it was like suddenly recognizing what I've always wanted acting to be." At 83, Ford earned his first-ever Emmy Award nomination for his portrayal of Dr. Paul Rhoades—a therapist with Parkinson's disease—on the hit series. If anyone knows that life's biggest changes can become our greatest gifts, it's Harrison Ford—and that's exactly why he's today's quote of the day.

Quote of the Day by Harrison Ford

"We all have big changes in our lives that are more or less a second chance."

The reason I love this quote so much is because we always perceive change as being the end of something. But he's encouraging people to look at it from a different perspective—that change isn't the end. Instead, it's a chance at an entirely new beginning. How many times have you looked back at a massive change that scared you at first and realized it was actually the best thing that could have happened? Life changes—whether they're in careers, relationships or families—shouldn't be feared; they should be embraced because change gives us the opportunity for a fresh, new start.

For over a decade, Ford worked as a carpenter while pursuing his acting dreams.

Deeper Meaning of Harrison Ford's Quote—Embracing Change

Harrison Ford's words are so powerful because he actually lived them. When he registered for that drama class in college, it was to boost his GPA—he had no idea he'd actually have to perform. But instead of being scared, he embraced it and it changed his life in the best possible way. For the first time, he felt like he belonged, overcame his depression and discovered his passion for acting.

When the studio executive told him he had no future in showbiz, it led Ford to carpentry, a job which put him in the exact room where George Lucas was casting Star Wars. And after five decades as one of Hollywood's biggest stars, he embraced yet another massive change by taking on his first-ever comedy role in Shrinking. Every single time life handed Harrison Ford an unexpected change, he didn't run from it—he leaned in. And every single time, it led to something incredible.

And that's the deeper meaning behind this quote: We must embrace change—even if it's completely unexpected. While it can be scary at first, life's biggest changes can lead to some of its greatest gifts if we have the right perspective.

1974 Ultimate Rock Classic Among All-Time ‘Greatest Songs’ Was A No. 1 Hit 52 Years Ago

Sun, 04/12/2026 - 11:38pm

52 years ago today, on April 13, 1974, Elton John scored his second No. 1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart with the piano-driven classic “Bennie and the Jets.” Appearing on his double-album Goodbye Yellow BrickRoad, which dropped a year prior, the tune features a unique live sound, despite it being recorded in a studio in France.

The Lyrics

Written alongside friend and frequent collaborator Bernie Taupin, who had composed all of the lyrics on Goodbye Yellow BrickRoad, with John taking credit as the composer, the song paints a slightly futuristic picture of a fictional glam rock band called “Bennie and the Jets” that’s made up of androids, with a beautiful androgynous woman as their frontperson.

Given from the perspective of a fan who obsesses over the group, the quirky lyrics transport listeners into an exaggerated and over-the-top world that plays with the idea of how fame is often admired.

Say, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet? / Ooh, but they're so spaced out, B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets / Oh but they're weird and they're wonderful / Oh Bennie she's really keen / She's got electric boots, a mohair suit / You know I read it in a magazine, ohh-oh / B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets,” John sings throughout the chorus of the song, showcasing his signature vocals and high falsetto.

Of its live sound, according toAmerican Songwriter, while in the recording studio, John had begun his piano chords early, making the recording imperfect to the point that producer Gus Dudgeon noticed its live-band feel. Dudgeon, then, went into the studio and added real-life crowd effects “taken from a 1972 John concert at London’s Royal Festival Hall and Jimi Hendrix’s 1970 Isle of Wight Festival performance, with whistles added from a live show in Vancouver, Canada.”

The Album

With its appearance on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, “Bennie and the Jets” played a role in the album’s commercial success as it went on to sell more than 20 million copies worldwide. Along with “Bennie and the Jets,” the 18-track collection includes singles, “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Candle in the Wind.”

In 2003, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was later named one of the “Best Albums of All Time” by Rolling Stone.  Meanwhile, “Bennie and the Jets,” which belongs on Rolling Stone’s list of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” followed, “Crocodile Rock,” John’s first No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

2015 Hit Film Named 'Greatest Action Movie of All Time' Is a Sequel

Sun, 04/12/2026 - 11:35pm

The current generation of film buffs might not know that Mel Gibson is Australian, and that his claim to fame came years before Lethal Weapon (1987).

On April 12, 1979, the original Mad Max film was released in the land Down Under, which means the post-apocalyptic classic just celebrated a 47-year milestone.

For those who haven't seen the groundbreaking movie yet, it centers on a not-too-distant future where man's most precious resource — oil — has been depleted and the world has thus plunged into war, famine and financial chaos. Law enforcement in Australia struggles to quell a vicious biker gang, and one of its officers Max (Gibson) launches a personal vendetta against the gang when his wife and son are hunted down and murdered.

As fans of George Miller's iconic franchise are well aware, the action flick would ultimately spawn three sequels, one of which co-starred the late, great Tina Turner and the latest having hit U.S. theaters in 2015.

Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, Mad Max: Fury Road was both a critical and commercial success, going on to receive a whopping 10 Academy Award nominations. It won for:

  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Sound Editing

Fury Road also won the prestigious honor of Best Film by the National Board of Review that year. And in 2025, Collider was so bold as to name it the "best action movie of all time" due to its judicious use of CGI, nonstop action sequences and more.

And going back to Gibson-led classics, Lethal Weapon actually celebrated 39 years since its release last month. Directed by Richard Donner and written by Shane Black, the film paired two very different detectives: reckless loose cannon Martin Riggs (Gibson) and seasoned family man Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover).

On this day in music history, one of the most successful charity singles ever written rose to the top of the music charts.

Exactly 41 years ago on April 13, 1985, "We Are the World" by USA for Africa, reached the summit of the BillboardHot 100, where it stayed for four straight weeks. It became the fastest-selling pop single in history at the time, and was the first song to be certified multi-Platinum by the RIAA.

"We Are the World," was recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa, made up of over 20 of the biggest stars in music, with the hope of raising funds for famine relief in Africa. Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones, the song was recorded in January 1985, and soon became an anthem of unity and hope across the globe.

It featured solos from a wide range of the industry's superstars, including Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Dionne Warwick and many, many others.

Released on March 28, 1985, the song took less than a month to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100, sold over seven million copies and raised more than $80 million to support humanitarian efforts across Africa.

The following year, "We Are the World" was nominated for four Grammy Awards at the 1986 ceremony. It won in all four categories it was nominated, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Group and Best Music Video.

On the 25th anniversary of "We Are the World" in 2010, more industry icons remade a new version of the iconic track to raise money for earthquake relief in Haiti. Recorded after the death of Jackson, they kept his original chorus in the song, adding in layered vocals from his sister,Janet Jackson.

The remake also featured returning artists like Wonder, Warwick, and Richie, plus a wide variety of other artists, ranging from Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus to Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand. Other singers who contributed to the 2010 track include Jamie FoxxPinkTony BennettNicole ScherzingerJennifer HudsonMary J. Blige and many more.
