Best-Selling 1965 Science Fiction Epic Ranked Among ‘Best Books of All Time’

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 4:37pm

Originally published as multiple separate editions in Analog magazine, author Frank Herbert's science fiction epic Dune is considered one of the most influential in the genre. Inspiring films, games, and even the name for a crater on the moon, Dune's legacy is undeniable. The epic is critically acclaimed and was even recently ranked among the "Best Books of All Time" by Collider, among the likes of To Kill a Mockingbirdand The Lord of the Rings.

Inspired by feudalism, the Oregon Dunes, and different religious and ecological theories, Herbert wrote Dune over the course of five years. Herbert was also inspired by his own experiences with psilocybin and hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Dune World was initially published as a three-part serial in Analog magazine between December 1963 and February 1964. The serial versions were shopped to more than 20 publishers who all rejected it. Finally, in August of 1965,  the publisher Chilton Books, who were known for publishing automobile manuals, took a chance on Herbert's work and formally published Dune.

While not initially a success due to it being seen as atypical for science fiction at the time, thanks to word-of-mouth interest, Dune slowly gained critical acclaim and popularity. This gave Herbert the opportunity to work on expanding the story full time, leading to five sequel novels. Following Herbert's death in 1986, his son found journals and notebooks containing notes from his father that led to prequels and further expansions of the story being published posthumously.

Taking place on the fictional desert planet of Arrakis, Dune follows young Paul Atreides, who is the heir to a noble family tasked with ruling the inhospitable planet. Arrakis is important because it is the only planet in the universe containing melange, also known as "spice," which enhances consciousness and extends the life of those who ingest the drug. Spice is so rare that it's known that people will kill for it. Following the betrayal and destruction of his family, Paul sets out on a journey of evolution and destiny that could change humankind forever.

Dune and the additional installments in the Dune Chronicles are available wherever books are sold.

George Takei, 89, Reveals the Real Strength of 'Star Trek'

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 4:35pm

Star Trek icon George Takei, now 89, is revealing what he believes is the franchise's strength, nearly 60 years after the original series began airing in September 1966.

While on the Star Trek 60th Anniversary panel at the 2026 San Diego Comic Con, Takei, who played Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu during the three-season run of Star Trek: The Original Series, said that one of Star Trek's most important messages can be boiled down to the Vulcan belief of "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" (IDIC).

"That's not just in the visual part. I look different from her, and she looks different from him. But not just that, it's the background," said Takei, who also appeared as Sulu in several Star Trek films. "It's the history. It's what differences we bring, other than the visual. We have a whole history that's shaped our vantage point on life, how we see life. And it's recognizing that amongst all of us, coming together, and realizing that our strength is in our working together."

He went on to say that when thoughts are "exchanged," it's courageous "to think about that difference and learn from it."

"I think that's what the strength of Star Trek is. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations, and then you'll live long and prosper," said Takei with a smile, in reference to Mr. Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) famous phrase.

Takei made similar comments about IDIC being a tenet of Star Trek during an April 2026 appearance at Awesome Con 2026. He said that Star Trek actors, writers, and fans "have carried the message" of IDIC, established by the creator of Star Trek: TOS, Gene Roddenberry.

"That brought a great diversity of people together. People who are different, who come from different cultures," said Takei.

The actor then said that he's been to Star Trek conventions all over the world, which has showcased the diversity among Star Trek fans.

George Takei Shared His Thoughts About 'Star Trek: The Original Series' Turning 60

During the July 2026 San Diego Comic Con panel, Takei discussed Star Trek: TOS turning 60.

"It's always wonderful to have people come up to you and say, 'Congratulations!' or 'Happy 60th.' It makes me feel so young. I'm way older than 60," said Takei, laughing. "But that isn't the only wonderful thing about this. It's an extraordinary phenomenon."

He then shared his appreciation for Star Trek's multi-generational and passionate fanbase, who continue to show up for the franchise.

"What television series that was low-rated when we first started, not only lasted three seasons and were cancelled, but because of all of people like you and your parents and your grandparents, because of their intelligence and their sensitivity and their vision, supported Star Trek to the extent that we have lived long and endured for 60 years and going. That is an extraordinary television phenomenon," said Takei before an audience of Star Trek fans.

1967 No.1 Was Turned Down by Over 12 Other Artists for Being Too ‘Simple'

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 4:20pm

"Happy Together" is one of the most enduring songs, over 50 years later. You would have heard it in adverts, at weddings and on movie soundtracks. But the song was a track turned down by numerous artists before it found its way into The Turtles' hands.

The track was written by Garry Bonner and drummer Alan Gordon. The latter put together the melody while working with his first band, The Magicians, inspired by the constant tuning of guitarist Allan "Jake" Jacobs during the band's concerts. Jacobs had no interest in making the song, because he thought it was too easy.

Discussing the origins of the song, Gordon recalled: “I excitedly and in fairness asked Jake to complete the song with me as co-writer, but he refused, saying it was all ‘too simple’ for him to be involved, so my regular partner Gary [Bonner] then helped me with the finishing touches”.

Gordon played "Happy Together" to various record companies and bands, but was turned down by numerous artists. They all had the same complaint: the song was too basic and sounded like something made on a whim. Acts that turned the song down included the Happenings, the Vogues, and the Tokens, per Rebeat. Mixdown suggests 12 artists nixed the now iconic rock song.

Around the same time, California rock band The Turtles were struggling professionally and financially. While they had scored three Top 40 songs in the mid 60s, their last five singles were disappointing.

Lead singer Howard Kaylan speaks about discovering "Happy Together" in his autobiography, explaining how the band spent a significant amount of time listening to demos submitted by publishing companies.

Lead vocalist Howard Kaylan mentions in his autobiography and in the Turtles' documentary that the group found "Happy Together" after spending some time listening to demos submitted by publishing companies. Because the demo had been listened to and turned down so many times, it was "practically unlistenable", with Kaylan describing the acetate as "scratchy and sticky".

Kaylan recalled that the demo consisted of "one guy strumming an acoustic guitar while the other sings in a bizarre falsetto to get a semblance of rhythm going. Their voices were abysmal". Backing singer Mark Volman agreed with his bandmate, calling the demo "amateurish, lacking any kind of professional performance".

"It [the demo] only included a singer and a guitar, but we could hear the melody and chorus. We were very careful because we had had those records that had been done poorly and we needed something to be great. It could have easily been our last recording. After all, how many failures were we going to be given by a small, independent record label?[" Volman revealed.

Luckily, the song was a hit for The Turtles once they had transformed it. It peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band's first and only chart-topper. It was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007. Despite no one wanting to record "Happy Together," it was one of the most performed songs in the United States in the 20th century.

Given the fact that Yas and Tommy received the second most votes to get dumped from the Island, Mica and Samraj felt they were the best couple to dump from the Island as well.

As the finale took place, the U.K. voted LIVE for who they wanted to win the season. Receiving the fewest votes, Simbarashe "Simba" Kudyiwa and Angelista Gunda were dumped from the Island, with Jasmine Müller and Kavan Murphy coming in second place.

Son of Country Legend Blows Fans Away with Performance of Beatles Classic - 'Absolutely Beautiful Voice'

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 4:13pm

One of the greatest voices you can find in music today comes from the son of country's greatest living icon Willie Nelson, Lukas Nelson. Lukas has one of the most amazing singing voices that I have ever had the privilege of seeing live, and an astonishing amount of musicianship to back it up. He's a one of a kind performer.

Nelson has this ability to make any song his own, whether that's an old classic from his dad, or one of The Beatles' greatest hits. Yesterday, Nelson took to his social media to post a cover of one of the most beautiful songs from The Beatles' discography: "Here, There And Everywhere." The song is one of Lennon and McCartney's greatest compositions. It is a gorgeous, soft, and lush song that captures all the warmth of love.

Nelson absolutely killed his version of the song, with an amazing acoustic cover from his home.

Some @The Beatles for your Saturday.

♬ original sound - Lukas Nelson

The song really fits the style that Nelson brings to the table. I'm a huge fan of the tone of voice he uses to approach the song. He's great at utilizing the space of the song to let the emotions linger.

Fans were in love with the performance, taking to the comments to share their love and appreciation for the rendition.

"The way the Nelsons sing should be studied. It’s so effortless and unique and beautiful all at the same time."

"Top 5 Beatles favs of all time. Nice job. 👍"

"Absolutely beautiful voice."

Nelson is a world-class talent. This song showcases one of the many things I love about him as an artist. To anyone who is a fan of his father, or country music in general, he is a massive breath of fresh air within the current trends of country that everyone is sure to get something out of.

We Asked 3 Registered Dietitians About the Worst '80s Diet and They All Said the Same Thing

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 3:25pm

The '80s had its own unique culture and trends, including a culture around food. But while a lot of good came out of the '80s, this decade wasn’t exactly known for being great for nutrition.

“There was a strong focus on thinness, and many diets promised rapid weight loss with little scientific evidence to support them,” says Sandra Zhang, RDN, LDN, dietitian at the Frances Stern Nutrition Center at Tufts Medical Center. Nutrition science wasn’t as developed in the 1980s as it is now, Zhang points out. As a result, fad diets thrived.

Many diets in this decade focused on quick weight loss over sustainable changes to encourage people to eat a balanced, healthy diet, agrees Sonya Angelone, RD, PhD,a former spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a San Francisco-based dietitian.

“This is when the Dietary Guidelines for Americans were introduced,” Angelone says. But she says that even those were misinterpreted. “The guideline to limit fat was taken to the extreme of ‘eat as little fat as possible,’ which is when the fat-free craze really began."

While a lot of questionable diets thrived in the 1980s, there’s one in particular that dietitians say they’re glad is no longer around. This is the worst '80s diet, according to dietitians.

🩺SIGN UP for Parade’s health newsletter with expert-approved tips, healthy eats, exercises, news & more to help you stay healthy & feel your best self💊

This Is the Worst '80s Diet, According To Registered Dietitians

It’s the Beverly Hills Diet. “This diet was highly restrictive and lacked important nutrients, especially protein,” Zhang says.

The diet also lacked healthy fats, calcium, iron and vitamin B12, saysJessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers. “These are really important nutrients,” she explains. “People who followed this diet put themselves at risk for nutritional deficiencies and also felt really hungry.”

The diet was built around the concept that foods must be eaten in specific combinations for the body to digest food properly, Angelone explains.

“However, the body doesn’t need specific combinations to properly digest and metabolize nutrients,” she says.

Zhang agrees. “The food-combining rules weren't supported by science,” she says.

What Was the Beverly Hills Diet?

The Beverly Hills Diet was the brainchild of Judy Mazel, who had no formal credentials in medicine or nutrition. She wrote several books on the diet, including The Beverly Hills Diet: How to Be as Thin as You Like for the Rest of Your Life and The New Beverly Hills Diet: Recipes to Forever.

The diet was done in phases and relied on a concept that certain nutrients, like carbohydrates and proteins, shouldn’t be combined in the same meal or even eaten in the same day.

Related: Jane Fonda’s First Workout Video Released 34 Years Ago Today

The first phase of the diet lasted for 10 days. During that time, followers were encouraged to only eat fruits like pineapple and papaya, before adding in other fruits. Pineapple and papaya contain enzymes to promote digestion and weight loss, according to the diet.

“We call it pineapple magic and papaya power,” Mazel said in a 1982 interview.

Mazel blamed undigested food that’s “stuck” in the body for weight gain.

After 10 days, followers of the Beverly Hills Diet could slowly add protein, vegetables and fats back, but these needed to be on separate days. They were encouraged to focus on how foods are paired together vs how much they eat. However, estimates suggest that most people ate about 1,000 calories a day on the Beverly Hills Diet.

“There are ways of, say, confronting your ‘fat person,’ acknowledging and letting go of them, and learning how to embrace your new skinny talk from a skinny voice,” Mazel said in the 1982 interview. Thinness was a big element of the diet. A description from one of Mazel’s books noted how she dropped from 180 to 108 pounds by following her diet.

What Happened to the Beverly Hills Diet?

While the Beverly Hills Diet was embraced by plenty of people, it was widely debunked by the medical community. JAMA called this diet “scientifically unsound and potentially dangerous,” stressing that it was not a “miraculous cure” for obesity.

But people did lose weight on the diet. “The reason is that they ate so few calories,” Cording says.

However, some people ended up in the hospital after following the diet.

“A diet low in sodium or protein can lead to dehydration, low blood pressure and electrolytes changes,” Angelone tells Parade. “Plus, the lack of calories made people feel weak.”

It’s not clear exactly when the Beverly Hills Diet fell out of favor, but it eventually petered out. “This was not a good diet,” Cording says.

These 7 ‘Lazy’ Habits Actually Signal High Emotional Intelligence, Psychologist Says

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 3:11pm

"Rise and grind."
"I'll sleep when I'm dead."
"I'm the first one in the office and the last one to leave."
"I work 60-hour weeks."

For generations, these phrases have doubled as descriptors of people with a strong work ethic. They were "good employees." To say them truthfully was a badge of honor. Then, buzzwords like "sleep-maxxing" and "work-life harmony" entered the chat, which one psychologist says was absolutely necessary. She thinks it's past time to understand that some "lazy" habits actually signal high emotional intelligence (aka EQ or EI), including an awareness that helps you develop strong emotional regulation habits (and the ability to show empathy for others).

"Not everything that looks like laziness is actually a lack of motivation," Dr. Mindy DeSeta, Ph.D., a Miami-based psychologist and relationship therapist, tells Parade. "Sometimes people are protecting their time, energy or mental health by setting healthy limits."

Yet, Dr. DeSeta understands how hard it is to decondition ourselves. For years, our employers, society and (recently) social media influences have worshiped at the altar of "burning-the-midnight-oil." She says it's valuable to learn the difference between "laziness" and "emotional intelligence," if only to protect our own peace and capacity.

"Understanding that difference helps us avoid judging ourselves or others too harshly," she explains. "It also encourages healthier work habits instead of constant guilt. Rest and boundaries can make someone more productive, not less."

Here, Dr. DeSeta reveals seven "lazy" habits that are actually signs of high EQ. She also shares tips for developing and maintaining the top habits of emotionally intelligent people.

Related: 9 Phrases To Shut Down a Micromanaging Boss, According to an HR Expert

The Hustle Culture Myth: Why Psychologists Say 'Laziness' Is Misunderstood

"Hustle culture" is a term that gets thrown around a lot, and Dr. DeSeta says it perpetuates many myths about what defines "laziness."

"The hustle culture myth is the idea that your worth depends on how busy or productive you are. It sends the message that working nonstop is something to admire, even when it's hurting your health or relationships," she explains. "Many people start believing that slowing down means they're falling behind. In reality, everyone needs time to rest and recharge. Success isn't measured by how exhausted you are."

Indeed, hustle culture burnout is real and can leave us feeling depleted. We may then act super-harsh to ourselves and others because we're so exhausted. The problem? We may earn lots of real and figurative high-fives from others, such as our employers, for our "strong work ethic." As a result, everyone not running at our impossible pace is "lazy," including us, if we take a beat.

"When people are praised for always being busy, anything slower can be labeled as lazy," Dr. DeSeta states. "Taking breaks, saying no or choosing rest may look unproductive from the outside. In reality, those choices are often what help people avoid burnout and stay consistent."

But she shares that we often fall into a trap of judging effort by how busy someone is, rather than by how healthy and effective they are.

"That mindset makes it easy to confuse balance with laziness," Dr. DeSeta notes.

Related: 9 Workplace Habits That Make You ‘Instantly Unlikable,’ According to Etiquette Experts

7 'Lazy' Habits That Actually Signal High Emotional Intelligence

Some habits of emotionally intelligent people are mistakenly labeled "laziness." Dr. DeSeta says it's time for a reframe on these seven habits.

1. Needing alone time

Ever wonder, "Why do I need so much alone time?" You may think it's because you're too "lazy" to attend post-work happy hours or "only" make five of the eight summer weddings you were invited to (even though three were ones you were in). Dr. DeSeta shares that detecting the need for solo time is actually a green flag for emotional intelligence.

"Emotionally intelligent people recognize when they need time to recharge instead of pushing themselves to do everything," she says. "Saying no to an invitation doesn't always mean someone doesn't care. It often means they're respecting their own limits. Alone time can improve mood, reduce stress and help people show up more fully when they are with others."

Still, don't get surprised when the "lazy" label gets falsely thrown your way.

"People on the outside may mistake that choice for laziness because they only see what someone isn't doing," she states. "Setting healthy boundaries is often a sign of self-awareness, not a lack of motivation."

2. Taking regular breaks during the workday

There's a difference between emotionally intelligent boundaries and laziness. Breaking for a 30-minute lunch or taking a lap around the office to get some hourly movement in is not the latter.

"Someone who steps away from their desk throughout the day may look like they're avoiding work," Dr. DeSeta says. "In reality, short breaks help people reset, stay focused and make better decisions instead of working until they're mentally drained."

3. Not answering messages immediately

Yes, it's OK to leave someone on "read" while you change a diaper or finish dinner with your family. You are not an AI chatbot. You do not need to be available on-demand, all day and night.

"Some people assume a delayed text or email means someone isn't motivated or doesn't care," Dr. DeSeta says. "Often, it's a healthy boundary that allows a person to stay present with their work, family or personal time instead of feeling available 24/7."

4. Leaving work on time

You are not "lazy" for leaving work at 5 p.m. (or your job's equivalent) and not answering a single email until 9 a.m. when you're back at work again.

"People who consistently leave at the end of the workday can be unfairly labeled as less dedicated," Dr. DeSeta reports. "In many cases, they're simply protecting their personal time and recognizing that being constantly overworked isn't the same as being productive."

5. Choosing to do fewer things well instead of saying yes to everything

Saying "no" to volunteering at your place of worship or an extra work task is completely acceptable if you're at (or nearing) capacity.

"Turning down extra responsibilities can sometimes be mistaken for laziness or a lack of ambition," Dr. DeSeta emphasizes. "Emotionally intelligent people know their limits and understand that doing a few things well is often more valuable than doing many things poorly."

6. Scheduling quiet time with no plans

White space on your calendar can put you in a good headspace, increasing emotional intelligence.

"A free afternoon or evening may look unproductive from the outside," Dr. DeSeta notes. "In reality, intentionally creating downtime helps reduce stress, restore mental energy and prevent burnout before it starts."

7. Asking for help instead of doing everything alone

Solo time? A good thing for emotional intelligence. Doing everything by yourself? Not recommended. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of high EQ.

"Emotionally intelligent people recognize that collaboration is a strength and that knowing when to lean on others often leads to better outcomes than trying to handle everything themselves," Dr. DeSeta explains.

The Difference Between High-EQ Rest and Actual Laziness

"High-EQ rest is intentional and has a purpose, while actual laziness is avoiding responsibilities without a good reason," Dr. DeSeta explains.

For instance, she shares that someone with high emotional intelligence can flag when they need to slow down. They know they'll return to a "faster pace" with more focus and energy.

"They aren't avoiding work," Dr. DeSeta says. "Instead, they're making sure they have the energy to do it well."

On the other hand, she notes that laziness means putting things off, even if it causes more problems or increases stress later.

"The biggest difference is that healthy rest helps you function better, while laziness tends to keep you stuck," Dr. DeSeta adds.

How To Embrace 'Productive Rest' Without the Guilt

It's possible to heal from hustle culture burnout and set emotionally intelligent boundaries. Dr. DeSeta shared tips for embracing rest and developing habits of emotionally intelligent people.

1. Reframe rest as a priority—and schedule it

Dr. DeSeta notes that we don't have to "earn" rest. It's an important part of our routine, but you may need to work on fixing your mindset about "breathers" after years of living with little margin in your day.

"Many people feel guilty relaxing because they think they should always be doing something productive," she says. "Remind yourself that rest is what allows you to think clearly, stay patient and do your best work."

She suggests that people learn to schedule time for walks, reading or sitting outside, as they would for a meeting. Put it on your calendar.

2. Choose your version of 'recharging'

The Internet is full of ideas for self-care. But bath bombs and scented candles may make you sneeze.

"Not all downtime leaves you feeling refreshed, so pay attention to what actually restores your energy," Dr. DeSeta states. "For some people, that's taking a nap, spending time in nature, exercising or talking with a friend instead of endlessly scrolling on their phone."

She says a good way to determine whether the self-care strategy is truly recharging is to ask yourself whether you feel more energized afterward than when you started.

3. Let go of the idea that every minute has to be productive

Because it doesn't.

"Your value isn't measured by how busy you are every hour of the day," Dr. DeSeta emphasizes. "When you catch yourself feeling guilty for taking a break, remind yourself that rest is part of staying healthy, not a reward for being exhausted."

1884 Book by a Famous Author Was Just Crowned the Best American Novel of All Time

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 2:59pm

To be considered an American literary masterpiece is no easy feat, as even the most well-crafted novels may not offer narratives or themes that resonate with the country.

That being said, the publication Collider did recently release a ranking of "the 10 greatest American books of all time," which included acclaimed novels by American authors, such as Beloved by Toni Morrison, published in 1987, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway from 1929, 2001's The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen, and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, released in 1939.

The list's top spot was given to Mark Twain's 1884 book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Percival Everett, the Author of 'James,' Shared His Thoughts About 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' in a 2024 Interview

In a 2024 interview with PBS NewsHour, Percival Everett, author of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction winner James, an Adventures of Huckleberry Finn retelling, shared his thoughts about Hemingway's belief that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain, called Huckleberry Finn."

Everett responded that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which focuses on the titular character and a man named Jim, who has been enslaved, trying to evade horrific circumstances together, is "a book about an American youth, about America itself being an adolescent, wandering through its own landscape, trying to come to terms with the contradictions of slavery."

"That's a pretty remarkable novel. And it's pretty remarkable for its time when you view it in that way. In that way, Hemingway is right," said Everett in the 2024 interview.

The author then shared that he believes James, which tells James' (Jim) point of view, is "in conversation with Twain."

"I'm perhaps writing the novel that he was not equipped to write. And nor, would he even imagine it because his character is Huck Finn. It's Huck's novel. But he could not occupy the psychic and cultural space that was occupied by Jim," said Everett.

In addition, he said he believed "it's only fair" to give James a voice, as he is a "character who has become iconic in our literary landscape and he's never had a chance to speak."

"That landscape was not wandered alone by Huck. That there was another agent there, someone with agency, experiencing his role in a very different way," said Everett during the PBS NewsHour interview. "That wide-eyed, innocent America wandering through that landscape is certainly attractive and youthful and promising, but he's wandering through there with a victim who has built it for him."

Fans Are ‘Sick’ After Realizing ‘90s Legend, Who Joined Her Iconic Group at 13-Years-Old, Just Gave a Rare Performance

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 2:32pm

There are few who have achieved what Lauryn Hill has. The prolific songwriter, singer, and actress joined her group, The Fugees, at just 13. She went on to secure several prominent screen roles, including starring alongside Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

While The Fugees' cover of "Killing Me Softly" catapulted the group to global fame, it was her seminal solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, that revolutionized '90s music. The album sold 19 million copies and made history at the 1999 Grammy Awards, where Hill became the first woman to earn 10 nominations in a single year and the first woman to win five trophies in one night, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist.

After 2002, Hill slowed her intense recording and touring schedule. While she never fully stepped away from music, her live appearances became rare and highly anticipated. That rarity is why so many fans were left reeling after Hill made a surprise appearance at the 2026 Newport Folk Festival on July 24.

Concertgoers captured clips of her performance, and fans online were in complete disbelief at her vocal power and stage presence.

During her set, she performed her legendary rendition of "Killing Me Softly," as well as a soulful acoustic version of her hit "Ex-Factor."

"Words can’t describe how pissed I am I missed this," one fan wrote.

"The chills I got!! This is once in a lifetime amazing," added another.

"I think this is the 1st time in a long time I’ve seen her enjoy performing," noted another commenter.

Amid the sea of praise, fans also expressed surprise that the hip-hop and R&B icon was not scheduled to perform on the festival's main stage. Hill's touring reputation has long been a topic of debate—while critics have pointed to late arrivals or canceled dates in the past, concertgoers consistently maintain that her live performances remain some of the most powerful in modern music history.

Today, Hill continues to perform live and earned her first nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—a milestone that honors her undeniable impact on the industry.

Is Kimmel Trolling or Adding to the Chaos? Comedian's Second Fake McConnell Photo Sparks Fresh Backlash

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 2:29pm

Jimmy Kimmel is back at it again! And no, we don’t mean hosting his late-night show. Even though the comedian is currently on a break, he’s not letting the latest Mitch McConnell proof-of-life photo controversy pass him by.

Kimmel is currently on a two-month hiatus while celeb guests, including Tiffany Haddish, Colman Domingo, Ike Barinholtz, Anthony Anderson, Jelly Roll, and Rosie O’Donnell, fill in as temporary hosts. And even though Kimmel won’t make his on-air return until September, he’s still finding a way to keep his brand of comedy going.

Where’s Mitch McConnell? Well, back in June, McConnell’s office posted the first ‘proof-of-life’ photo. According to his statement, the Senator had fallen, was briefly unconscious, and then suffered a mild case of pneumonia. The photo, alongside his wife Elaine Chao, was meant to pacify conspiracy theorists who posited that a Weekend at Bernie’s scenario was in the works.

Kimmel, like many, many, many other skeptics, jumped on the photo and posted his own AI-doctored version. The late-night host revealed his pic on Instagram, captioning it, “For those who’ve been asking, I’m feeling great.”

Fast-forward a month and a half, and McConnell has finally released another update. On July 27, the Senator shared a new photo (also with his wife) and the statement, “I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders.”

This time around, Kimmel is playing the role of the dutiful wife, replacing Chao’s face with his own and writing, “For those asking, Mitch and I are feeling better, stronger, sexier, and still technically alive every day!”

View this post on Instagram

Fans, friends, and a few celebs played right along, commenting, “I need to know what skin care line Mitch is using. He now looks 15 years younger”, “I too enjoy wearing long sleeve button up shirts while receiving medical attention,” and “My dude doesn’t disappoint even though he’s on vacation.”

But the comments didn’t end there. Kimmel’s fans kept going, loading on the sarcasm, “Something looks wrong here, but I can’t put my finger on it”, and asking, “Did you talk to him for 20 min?”

McConnell is yet to offer further insight into his condition, but we’re pretty sure Jimmy will!

1972 Classic Ballad, With 13-Year-Old Singer, Became a Timeless Love Anthem

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 2:23pm

Fifty-four years ago, beloved singer Donny Osmond released a cover of "Puppy Love"—a song that reached staggering chart success despite being sung by a 13-year-old.

Released on February 19, 1972, as the lead single from his third studio album, Portrait of Donny, "Puppy Love" achieved major success. Upon its release, it captured the attention of thousands of listeners on the radio. By Feb. 26, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart, eventually peaking at No. 3 on April 1. In total, the single spent 12 consecutive weeks on the tally, further establishing his status as a global teen idol.

"Puppy Love" didn't just experience chart dominance—it also earned significant commercial triumph. The track was a global smash hit, selling over 1 million physical copies. Its parent album was later certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), attesting to the single's influence and ability to move audiences.

Creating "Puppy Love"

Donny was the breakout star from the American family band The Osmonds, featuring nine siblings. By the time he launched his solo career, Donny was only 13 years old, releasing his debut single "Go Away Little Girl" in September 1971. Within the same month, Donny recorded "Puppy Love," placing him among the youngest stars to ever record a solo single that entered the Hot 100 chart.

Originally written and recorded by Paul Anka in 1960, "Puppy Love" is the quintessential love ballad. The song tells the story of an innocent romance between two teenagers. The track's theme of young love was only amplified by Donny's juvenile yet powerful voice, prompting nostalgia among older demographics and swooning teenage girls.

Over five decades after its release, Donny's rendition of "Puppy Love" is still commended for being an impactful '70s staple. The track has persevered today in the digital era, reaching modern audiences through streaming platforms. On Spotify alone, the track has garnered over 11.4 million streams.

Lindsay Clancy Trial: Why Lindsay Clancy Wouldn't Simply Walk Free After an Insanity Verdict (Exclusive)

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 2:19pm

Many people assume that a not criminally responsible verdict means a defendant is immediately released—but that is not how the process works in Massachusetts.

As the Lindsay Clancy trial continues, questions remain about what could happen if the jury finds her not criminally responsible in connection with the deaths of her three children. While Clancy's defense has argued that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis after giving birth to her third child, such a verdict would not simply allow her to return home.

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, is facing three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Prosecutors allege that Clancy strangled her children inside the basement of her Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023 while her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands. Afterward, she attempted to take her own life, an incident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her.

Instead, Clancy would enter a separate court-supervised process involving psychiatric evaluations, mental health experts, and possible long-term hospitalization, according to legal expert Margaret McLean, host of The Margaret McLean Show. Massachusetts law requires several steps to determine whether someone found not criminally responsible can safely be released back into the community, McLean says.

"Massachusetts law does not simply allow her to walk free," McLean tells Parade. "Her case would be shifted to a structured civil commitment process overseen by both the court and numerous mental health experts."

Following the verdict, a judge would first order an evaluation period of up to 40 days at a state mental health facility, where clinicians would assess her mental health and potential risk to the community. After the initial evaluation period, a judge would hold a hearing to determine whether Clancy remains mentally ill and whether she presents a danger to public safety. If that standard is met, she could be committed for up to six months at a secure psychiatric facility.

"Unlike a prison sentence, a 'not guilty by reason of insanity' commitment has no maximum end date," McLean explains. "If Clancy's severe mental illness is deemed chronic and dangerous, she can legally remain institutionalized for the rest of her life."

Once that initial commitment expires, the state would have to return to court to seek continued hospitalization. Each year, officials would need to prove that Clancy still requires involuntary treatment.

If she were eventually approved for release, it would likely come with strict court-ordered conditions, including mental health monitoring, supervised housing, medication compliance, and immediate intervention if doctors believed her condition was worsening.

If you or someone you know needs mental health help, text "HOME" to the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 or visit their website.

Tom Holland Becomes First Guest to Vomit on 'Hot Ones': 'I Got None of it on My Clothes'

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 2:11pm

Marvel actor Tom Holland has officially made history by becoming the first-ever celebrity to vomit on the set of Hot Ones.

Appearing on a recent episode of the popular YouTube talk show, Holland and his co-star Jon Bernthal discussed their work on the summer blockbuster The Odyssey over increasingly hot wings.

As they grappled with questions from host Sean Evans, the heat ended up proving a bit too much for the Spider-Man actor to handle. Standing up to pose with Evans for a publicity photo, Holland ended up doubling over and vomiting in front of the camera, leading all three celebrities to instantly begin laughing.

"Let's go!" Bernthal cheered, grabbing Holland by the shoulders and encouraging him to "take a picture" of the mess to better remember the occasion.

As Holland permitted the camera crew to use footage of his vomiting for the show, he wiped his mouth with a napkin Bernthal handed to him. “Look, Louis Vuitton, I got none of it on my clothes," he pointed out to the camera.

After Bernthal asked Evans if anyone had ever puked on the show before, Evans promptly responded, “That might be the first on set ever.”

“I love being the first,” Holland said with a laugh.

Of course, Hot Ones has become (in)famous for its fiery questions and even hotter wings. As each of its celebrity guests answer Evans' questions, they're subjected to increasingly spicier wings that leave them gasping for breath, reaching for milk and water and cursing aloud in pain and embarrassment.

During their appearance on the show, Holland and Bernthal spoke about their work in both The Odyssey and the upcoming MCU film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, opening in theaters on July 31.

“The fact that we auditioned for these movies together and we took that leap of faith together and we get to share this moment together now is pretty awesome and I’m just very grateful," Holland said at one point during Hot Ones, reflecting on his working relationship with Bernthal over the past decade.

In Joe's tribute to the young woman, he revealed that Victoria had died after a "simple fall."

"There are no words for this kind of pain," Joe, 54, wrote on Instagram. "Victoria, you were like a daughter to me. I watched you grow up with my daughter Milania. We were neighbors for years, and you became part of our family. I can't believe you're gone."

He continued, "To think that a simple fall while just being young and having fun could take such a beautiful life is heartbreaking. You were only 20 years old, with your whole future ahead of you."

Reflecting on the tragedy, Joe reminded his followers to cherish their loved ones, writing, "Life is so fragile. In one moment, everything can change. Please don't take a single day or the people you love for granted."

He also shared a final message to Victoria and her family, adding, "Victoria, you will be missed more than you'll ever know. You'll always have a place in our hearts, and I'll never forget you. My heart is with your family. Rest in peace, beautiful girl. Until we meet again."

Following Joe's tribute, Milania's mom, Teresa Giudice, also joined her family in remembering Victoria, commenting beneath her ex-husband's post: "Forever in our hearts."

The Real Housewives of New Jersey star, 54, additionally shared a photo from what appeared to be a church service on her Instagram Stories, writing, "We love Victoria."

Fans of the Giudice family have since shared messages of support, sending condolences to Victoria's loved ones and standing by Milania as she grieves the loss of her longtime friend.

I grew up in a house with wall-to-wall carpeting, so when I finally had a place of my own with beautiful hardwood floors, I was completely smitten. They instantly made every room feel brighter, cleaner and a little more grown-up. I couldn't imagine covering them with an area rug. After all, if you're lucky enough to have gorgeous wood floors, why hide them?

It didn't take long for me to realize that an area rug isn't there to compete with your floors—it actually helps show them off. A well-placed rug adds warmth without taking away from the natural beauty underneath, making a room feel more inviting and styled. It also helps define a space, whether you're anchoring a seating area in the living room or making a bedroom feel a little cozier. And if you've ever lived with echoey rooms or furniture that likes to slide around, you'll quickly appreciate the practical side of a good rug, too.

If you love the look of vintage Persian rugs but not the upkeep, this area rug delivers the best of both worlds. It features a colorful, distressed pattern that gives it the charm of a well-loved antique, while the power-loomed polypropylene construction (that means it's machine-made) offers a soft feel underfoot and durability.

What's also great is how many sizes this rug is offered in—from a petite 2'x3' to an oversized 9'x12' and everything in between.

"Lovely!" says a Kohl's shopper in their review. "We only bought this rug yesterday, but already we are so happy we did. It fits perfectly in our space. Love that it's wool which speaks to us of quality. We're looking forward to years of enjoyment!"

The Nourison rug is spot clean only, so you won't be able to throw it in the washing machine like you would other rugs labeled "washable." However, a little TLC will go a long way to keeping it looking gorgeous for a very long time.

1965 Break Up Song Was Inspired by Paul McCartney's Ex Who Was 'Too Wary'

Mon, 07/27/2026 - 2:00pm

Musicians sometimes write harsh songs during a rocky relationship. Paul McCartney wrote one, stayed, then got engaged years later. Here is the meaning behind The Beatles song, "I'm Looking Through You."

Paul McCartney Wrote 'I'm Looking Through You' About Jane Asher

The 1965 song "I'm Looking Through You" details the feeling of no longer recognizing a person you loved. That's because they changed in a way that's beyond physical traits.

Jane Asher and McCartney's relationship struggled in 1965. He reportedly wrote this song after an argument, according to Far Out.

"As is one’s wont in relationships, you will from time to time argue or not see eye to eye on things, and a couple of the songs around this period were that kind of thing," the songwriter said in the book, Many Years From Now. "This one I remember particularly as me being disillusioned over her commitment."

McCartney, 84, claimed that he saw through Asher's "façade" because she spent time elsewhere. However, the rock star admitted he was mad that she left for work when he did the same.

"Jane left me once and went off to Bristol to act," he said. "I said ‘OK then, leave, I’ll find someone else.’ It was shattering to be without her."

The Deep End star revealed her mindset during that time in her life with The Guardian in 2024. Dating a member of The Beatles draws attention and it become her identity to the public.

"I became very wary of the press early on, and I decided to keep my private life as private as I possibly could, which was hard because my life was so publicised at that time," Asher, 80, explained. However, she has complicated feelings for how she protected herself.

"I probably became too wary, and reluctant to talk about anything," Asher continued. "Back then, journalists seemed to write anything, regardless of whether it was true or not. So whether I’ve kept a sense of self … I don’t quite know what my self is. But it’s reasonably settled, I guess."

Related: Rock Bassist Hoped Supergroup Would Succeed at ‘Re-Writing the Blues’

McCartney and Asher got engaged in 1967 in India. She revealed on Dee Time with Simon Dee that their engagement was over a year later, and it wasn't her decision. Francie Schwartz claimed she was with McCartney when he watched it.

"I watched the show with Paul and his father," she said in The Beatles: Off The Record, according to American Songwriter. "This wave of shocked silence went through all of us. It was painful because she was announcing it publicly, and she didn’t leave it up to him. That’s the one thing Paul never wants to happen. He really is a control person."

If true that means Asher was fearful of press during their relationship, then used it to put an end to their engagement.
