Quote of the Day: Conservationist Jane Goodall on Advocacy and Doing Your Part

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 2:45am

Dr. Jane Goodall is known for her work studying chimpanzees and for being a powerful voice advocating for endangered animals. She was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England, and went on to become an ethologist, a scientist who studies animal behavior. She died on Oct. 1, 2025, and after her death, Netflix releasedFamous Last Words, a documentary series with Goodall as its inaugural episode. And even though she had some great things to say in that episode, she has shared memorable quotes throughout her life, making her a perfect pick for our quote of the day today.

As the Jane Goodall Institute reported, Goodall traveled to Tanzania to start her research on chimpanzees, which then turned into a 60+ year study of “groundbreaking” research that led to understanding them more. In her studies of chimpanzees, she was able to correct misconceptions about them, from the fact that they’re omnivorous and not vegetarian, to the fact that they use tools they make as well, per Britannica

Goodall was not just a scientist, but as her institute’s website says, she was also a conservationist, peacemaker and mentor. During her study of primates, she went into conservation work and advocacy for endangered species (specifically chimps) and protecting our planet.

On that note, Dr. Goodall’s quote today touches on what could put her work—and generally the future—in danger, and that’s apathy.

Quote of the Day by Jane Goodall

CanvaPro/Parade

“The greatest danger to our future is apathy.”

In a Time Magazine op-ed from Aug. 25, 2002, “The Power of One,” Dr. Goodall wrote this quote in her very first line. The first paragraph reads as such:

“The greatest danger to our future is apathy. We cannot expect those living in poverty and ignorance to worry about saving the world. For those of us able to read this magazine, it is different. We can do something to preserve our planet.”

Notably, in 2002, Goodall was appointed a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2002, and as Save the Chimps wrote on their website, without her, their organization might never have come to be. She really was a woman who put her words into action, and that’s what makes quotes like today’s profound.

Related: Quote of the Day: Paul Newman Says Anything Is Possible

Deeper Meaning of Jane Goodall’s Quote—Advocacy, Doing Your Part

Essentially, her “Power of One” essay for Time was about people’s lack of interest in trying to save the planet. In her second paragraph, she spoke to what a lot of us are guilty of; we see how dire the situation is with Earth and climate change, and we feel helpless in doing anything. We then brush it to the side and say to “leave it to the decision makers,” and we “do nothing.”

And that will essentially be our downfall. Her quote literally says that our own lack of care or interest in saving the planet with anything we can do ourselves is what will ultimately lead to the destruction of said planet and, in turn, our future.

Of course, she's not wrong. Goodall went into details later in her piece about things that seemed impossible hundreds of years ago that are now commonplace, like the internet or large commercial airplanes. And that’s all thanks to human accomplishment and people doing things.

So, how do we dig into determination and get rid of that horrible disinterest we may feel about saving the Earth? With hope, Dr. Goodall explained, which can overcome apathy.

“One reason for hope lies in the extraordinary nature of human intellectual accomplishment,” she wrote.

The rest of her op-ed pointed to what gave her hope and kept her going. She shared that “even companies” are helping out and want to leave positive impacts on the environment. The resilience of nature is also a cause for inspiration, and so is all the progress being made in stopping pollution. And last but not least, Goodall said that the “energy and hard work of young people” also gave her hope.

You can take this quote in the way that Goodall meant it, regarding saving the planet and endangered species. But you can also take this quote even further, using it in regard to politics, the state of our country and anything else that fills us with dread about the future. If you sit there and say, “Well, what can I even do? I’m just one person,” then of course, nothing will change. If you leave it up to others, it might be too late to step in once things really hit the fan.

Sure, it’s difficult when more powerful people seem to have more say than we do, or when large corporations are more responsible for the pollution poisoning our planet than we are. But making little changes to your routine, advocating for and spreading awareness about climate change, and partaking in petitions to make your voice heard can do a lot of good. Yes, others are working to help save the planet (or other things like democracy and world peace), but we can’t just rely on that. You have to do your part as well.

“I feel deep shame when I look into the eyes of my grandchildren and think how much damage has been done to Planet Earth since I was their age,” Dr. Goodall wrote in the final paragraph. “Each of us must work as hard as we can now to heal the hurts and save what is left.”

Related: Quote of the Day: Psychologist Carl Jung on Self-Awareness and Understanding Others

More Quotes from Jane Goodall
  • “Lasting change is a series of compromises. And compromise is all right, as long your values don’t change.”
  • “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
  • “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
  • “Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, we will help. Only if we help, we shall be saved.”
  • “The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves.”
  • “Change happens by listening and then starting a dialogue with the people who are doing something you don't believe is right. ”
  • “Here we are, the most clever species ever to have lived. So how is it we can destroy the only planet we have?”

Now just $48, the Inolait Folding Rattan Coffee Table is on sale for a whopping 65% off its usual $137 price during the Macy's Biggest Spring Sale. Shoppers can only secure this reduced price for a limited time, so interested customers should act fast.

A folding table is one of the smartest additions to any outdoor area with limited space because it provides an extra surface when you need it, then folds flat and stores away when you don’t. This kind of versatility can make spending time outdoors more enjoyable without overwhelming your space.

Described as "stylish and sturdy," the light gray rattan weave gives this patio table an elevated, resort-like vibe that looks way more expensive than the current price. Crafted with polyethylene (PE) rattan, a synthetic material that's designed to mimic natural rattan wicker, it is UV- and weather-proof. The PE rattan is handwoven over a rust-resistant metal frame, making this table simultaneously low-maintenance and durable.

Country Star, 33, Reveals Major Life Update Ahead of Wedding: ‘I Was Called to Be a Mama’

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 1:14am

Before she ever became famous, Lainey Wilson spent years pursuing a country music dream. Now, she’s at the height of her success, having achieved many major career milestones, including multiple Entertainer of the Year Awards.

Alongside a crowded trophy case, the 33-year-old female powerhouse has scored several No. 1 hits with songs like “Watermelon Moonshine," "Somewhere Over Laredo" and others.

That success is also giving her a packed schedule, coming off an already busy 2025, which saw her fulfilling dates on her massive headlining Whirlwind World Tour and — on a more personal note — getting engaged to her boyfriend-turned-fiancé Devlin “Duck” Hodges, 29, a former NFL quarterback.

Among her to-do list of superstardom, Wilson, who got engaged in February 2025, is in the midst of planning her upcoming wedding. However, the progress on that has been slow-going, as she admitted, “Honestly, we're taking our time,” in a previous interview with People.

An Upcoming Documentary

If that’s not enough, Wilson has a brand new documentary coming out called Keepin’ Country Cool, and in it, she shares quite the exciting life update.

She has decided to take the next step in growing her family.

On Wednesday, April 8th, a trailer for the upcoming Netflix documentary showcased Wilson sharing her thoughts on motherhood. She also revealed how those feelings have led her to make a major life decision toward plans to have future babies.

“I feel it in my heart that I was called to be a mama,” Wilson says in the clip. “But sometimes the Lord just has other plans.”

She Decided to Freeze Her Eggs

She then says, “I’m gonna freeze my eggs in April, put those babies on ice.”

The teaser video also showcases the “4X4XU” singer wearing a specialized gown and head covering while in the hospital with Hodges in tow, presumably on the day of her egg-freezing procedure. The attempt to eventually build a family by one comes as Wilson knows how demanding her music career is, and she admits she wears many hats.

"It is a whirlwind. The performer, the artist, the songwriter, the girl who's going to shake everybody's hand…” she says. “[I’m] just about people-d out."

"I think it is important to show people that I don't have my s--- all together," she continues. "I am thankful for the life that I live. It's about celebrating what we are given. It is a gift. This is all a gift."

Up until now, Wilson hasn’t been very outspoken about her wishes to become a mother. But perhaps the sneak peek at the documentary is just a glimpse of that part of her world that she’s ready to talk about.

Wilson’s Keepin’ Country Cool documentary premieres April 22 on Netflix.

Beachy and coastal-inspired, pearls are a great way to make any outfit feel fresh for spring and summer. These Giani Bernini Freshwater Baroque Pearl Drop Earrings at Macy’s are definitely worth checking out.

Featuring a freshwater baroque pearl gracefully dangling from the base, these earrings exude elegance. Larger than traditional pearl studs, these stand out more and will draw attention to your face. The pearl is connected by a pin strung through the center of the bead, giving it movement and allowing it to sway around.

While these pearls are cultured, they’re still real as they’re grown on farms in freshwater. The beauty of a baroque pearl is that no two are alike. Each pearl often boasts an asymmetrical shape and has its own unique silhouette, which only adds to its charm.

These simple but stunning earrings have a leverback base, designed to sit comfortably and elegantly on your lobe. Unlike earrings with butterfly backings, the closure is built into the post, so you don’t have to worry about losing a piece. They’re also really easy to put on — just snake the curved wire through your piercing and snap the hinged closure into place. Reviewers mentioned that the earrings feel secure in the ears.

Both the gold and silver earrings are made of sterling silver, which is a metal known for its durability and tarnish-resistant properties. The gold earrings are plated with 18-karat gold, making them feel polished and luxurious. Sterling silver and gold are both hypoallergenic, making these earrings an ideal choice for those with sensitive ears.

If you’re looking for a new pair of everyday earrings, these are a great option. Shoppers noted that these earrings are lightweight, so they won’t weigh you down or get in the way of your daily activities. These earrings are also extremely versatile. You can wear them for nearly any occasion, and they’ll complement your aesthetic. Paired with laid-back loungewear, dressy night-out ensembles, and everything in between, these pearls will instantly elevate your look and make it feel intentional.

1976 Disco Hit Ranked Among 'Best Pop Songs of All Time' Became Group's First & Only No. 1 Song 49 Years Ago Today

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 12:14am

It's not every successful musical act that manages to achieve the status of pop culture phenomenon, but ABBA definitely deserves that distinction. The Swedish supergroup's tunes have been so popular for so many years they've inspired a Broadway show and two movies, and even though they're not touring anymore, fans are still lining up to see avatars of the band members perform their favorite tracks.

So it might surprise listeners to learn that even though ABBA did have four top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, only one of those went to #1. Released in Dec. 1976, "Dancing Queen" became ABBA's first and only absolute chart-topper on April 9, 1977.

The song's success might have had something to do with the fact that ABBA was under pressure to produce a hit when they were writing it. As Jan Gradvall wrote in the book Melancholy Undercover: The book of Abba, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog went through a "slow period" following their 1974 Eurovision success with “Waterloo," and their attempts to record new music were often interrupted by promotional obligations.

Recorded in August 1975, "Dancing Queen" — ABBA's first foray into disco territory — was influenced by George McCrae’s "Rock Your Baby" and "the New Orleans rhythm on the 1972 album Dr John’s Gumbo," according to The Independent.

“When the recording was done, Bjorn and Benny understood that they had created something special. They went home late that night, ready to play it for their respective partners," Gradvall wrote, adding that Lyngstad "cried" when she first heard it, saying, “I thought it was so incredibly beautiful.” (Fältskog, meanwhile, was sleeping when Ulvaeus got home. He didn't wake her up, so he went over to his sister's house and played it "over and over" for her instead.)

"Dancing Queen" didn't just top the charts all over the globe, it went on to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. Billboard even ranked the track the second-best pop song of all time.

"Opening with a piano roll that cascades across the left-right channels like Farrah Fawcett’s follicles across her shoulder, 'Dancing Queen' eases us in with an ensemble of ethereal voices delivering a dose of secular heaven," wrote Billboard's Joe Lynch.

If ABBA could only hit #1 once, "Dancing Queen" was certainly the right song to win the crown.

'It Truly Emphasized How Alike We Are': Astronaut Christina Koch Shares Her Raw Revelations Looking Back at Earth

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 11:36pm

Christina Koch, a mission specialist on Artemis II who was selected as an astronaut in 2013, represents a historic step forward in human space exploration. As the first woman to travel beyond low Earth orbit and journey toward the Moon, her role is not only technical but deeply symbolic.

Artemis II is NASA's first crewed mission to the Moon since Apollo 17, sending four astronauts on a 10-day journey to test the Orion spacecraft and pave the way for future lunar landings. But beyond the engineering and milestones, Koch's reflections from space have captured global attention—especially her perspective on Earth itself.

Looking back at the planet from deep space, she described a profound shift in awareness. Rather than focusing solely on Earth's beauty, she became acutely aware of the vast blackness surrounding it. That contrast, she explained, made Earth feel even more precious and rare.

"The thing that changed for me, looking back at Earth, was that I found myself noticing not only the beauty of the Earth, but how much blackness there was around it and how it just made it even more special," she shared with NASA. "It truly emphasized how alike we are, how the same thing keeps every single person on planet Earth alive. We evolved on the same planet, and we have some shared things about how we love and live that are just universal. And the specialness and preciousness of that really is emphasized when you notice how much else there is around it."

Koch emphasized that from such a distance, the divisions we often focus on—borders, cultures, conflicts—seem to fade away. What becomes clear instead is how much humanity shares. In essence: Every person on Earth depends on the same fragile environment, evolved under the same conditions, and is connected by universal experiences of love, survival, and meaning.

Koch's observation echoes a long tradition of astronauts experiencing the "overview effect," which is explained as a cognitive shift that occurs when viewing Earth from space. Yet her words add a uniquely human dimension.

Against an infinite void, Earth becomes not just a home, but a shared miracle. Koch's insight reminds us that exploration is not only about reaching new worlds, but about seeing our own more clearly—and perhaps, treating it and each other with greater care.

Dermatologists Say These Summer Skincare Essentials Are a Must for Women Over 50 — and They Start at Just $8

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and the way you take care of it should change and evolve with each season of life. As the days get longer and humidity accelerates, it’s especially important to keep in mind things like hydration and SPF, especially for mature skin. Dermatologists previously told Parade that sunscreen is one of the most powerful anti-aging tools available and in the summer, it becomes even more essential.

The good thing is you don’t need to over complicate your entire skincare routine to see the results you want. In fact, dermatologists say that simplifying your skincare while focusing on a few key essentials can make a big impact. Below we have compiled top tips from derms, like daily SPF and supporting hydration. Think of this list as your summer skincare essential shopping guide, for those with mature skin.

Sunscreen Is a Non-Negotiable

The risk of developing skin cancer increases as we age, and the importance of protecting our skin from the sun becomes more important than ever. Adding a broad-spectrum SPF can help you take proactive measures to protect your skin against harmful rays. Plus, this pick from EltaMD contains hyaluronic acid to soothe and soften skin. It’s made with transparent zinc oxide that can blend into any skin tone and leaves no white cast after application, so skin looks even and natural.

Double Cleansing

If you’re using the SPF we recommended above, you’re already starting off strong but what about removing it? Most cleansers don’t fully do the job, often leaving behind residue even after you’ve washed your face — once. Dr. Alpana Mohta, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and medical advisor for BetterGoods.org, previously told Parade, “I do recommend the double cleanse technique, which involves using a makeup remover or oil cleanser first to remove all traces of dirt, makeup and oil from the skin.”

To start, use an oil cleanser to break down sunscreen and buildup, then follow with a gentle, hydrating face wash. A formula like La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser makes for a perfect second step. This simple upgrade makes a big difference, especially during the summer when everything tends to linger a little longer on your skin.

Retinol will forever remain a gold standard ingredient for improving skin texture, boosting collagen and reducing the appearance of fine lines for mature skin. However, it can make skin more sensitive to the sun during the summer months. Dermatologists recommend using retinol at night only and pairing it with daily sunscreen use.

Dermatologist Dr. Melanie Palm previously told Parade that moisturizers alone aren’t typically enough to address the needs of over 50 skin. “Serums can be powerful because they deliver high concentrations of active ingredients that support collagen production, boost hydration, improve texture, and smooth fine lines.” The two products below used together daily, can be a helpful addition to your skincare routine to add a hydration boost during the summer months.

When it comes to summer skincare for women over 50, the goal isn’t to feel overwhelmed by a ton of new products but to refine your routine. By focusing on things like daily sun protection or hydration, and using tips from dermatologists, you can support your skin through the new season without overthinking or doubting anything.

1985 No. 1 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Power Ballads’ of All Time Became a Timeless Love Anthem

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 11:02pm

On April 9, 1985, Bryan Adams released his soft rock classic “Heaven.” Though the nostalgic ballad wasn’t an instant success, it went on to become a beloved staple in the Canadian singer-songwriter’s catalog and one of the greatest power ballads of all time, according toUltimate Classic Rock

Co-written with Jim Vallance and produced alongside Bob Clearmountain, “Heaven” finds Adams, 66, swooning over a particular love interest and feeling as if he’s on Cloud 9 with the person, who seemingly takes his breath away. Over heavy synths, memorable electric guitar licks, and delicate piano chords, he uses his smooth, signature raspy vocals to look back on the early days of a young romance that has blossomed into something more..

Baby, you're all that I want / When you're lyin' here in my arms / I'm findin' it hard to believe / We’re in Heaven / And love is all that I need / And I found it there in your heart / Isn't too hard to see / We're in Heaven,” Adams sings throughout the belting chorus, which showcases his gratitude and undying commitment to someone special in his life.

Released as the third single from his fourth studio album, Reckless, “Heaven” followed tracks “Run to You” and “Somebody.” The song was a massive success for Adams, but it took him going the extra mile to bring in more attention to the song. Before re-releasing the song as a single off his album, the tune was commissioned for the 1983 movie, A Night in Heaven

Despite being a part of the soundtrack for the movie, the success of it came later. Of writing the tune for A Night in Heaven, Adams told theNew York Post, his vision for the track came from the heart.

“I said, ‘Look, let’s just forget what the film’s about — let’s just write a good song.’ So we wrote that song, submitted it, and it became part of that soundtrack, but the film didn’t do anything, and the soundtrack didn’t do anything,” the ‘80s pop-rock icon explained of the song, which features drumming by Steven Smith of the rock band, Journey. “So I put it onReckless, and it was from that record that it became successful.”

Successful indeed. So much so that the heartfelt track became his first tune to top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The ballad was also certified Gold the same year of its release in Adams’ native Canada.

Iconic Leading Man, Known for Romantic Roles, Turns 72

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 11:00pm

There’s something about a classic leading man that never really goes out of style, and Dennis Quaid is proof of that.

The beloved actor turns 72 on April 9, marking another year in a career that has spanned decades and delivered some of the most memorable romantic and charismatic performances in Hollywood. Whether you first fell for him in the ’80s or rediscovered him in later roles, Quaid has long had that effortless charm that made him stand out on screen.

Born in Houston in 1954, Quaid rose to fame during a time when Hollywood was full of breakout stars—but he carved out his own lane with a mix of rugged good looks, emotional depth, and an easygoing presence that made him instantly likable.

For many fans, his heartthrob status was cemented in films like The Right Stuff, where he played astronaut Gordon Cooper, and Great Balls of Fire!, portraying rock ‘n’ roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis. But it wasn’t just the big, flashy roles—Quaid had a way of bringing warmth and sincerity to every character, making audiences feel like they knew him.

He continued to win over fans in romantic and family-centered films like The Parent Trap, where he played the charming and slightly clueless dad opposite a young Lindsay Lohan, and Something to Talk About, showcasing his ability to balance humor with heartfelt emotion.

And of course, there’s The Big Easy—a role that many fans still point to as peak Quaid, thanks to his undeniable chemistry and Southern charm that made the film instantly unforgettable.

Over the years, Quaid has seamlessly transitioned from leading man to seasoned actor, taking on roles in dramas, comedies and even inspirational films, all while maintaining the same screen presence that made him a star in the first place.

But it’s that classic heartthrob energy—Quaid's charm, confidence, and approachability—that continues to resonate. He’s the kind of actor who could make you laugh, cry, and still leave you a little bit swooning by the end of the movie.

As he celebrates his 72nd birthday, Quaid remains one of those rare stars whose appeal spans generations. And for many fans, revisiting his films is like stepping back into a time when movie stars just had that something.

You’ve Heard His Drumming Your Whole Life—Now He’s 81

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 11:00pm

There are some musicians you may not always see in the spotlight, but once you hear their work, you realize they’ve been part of the soundtrack of your life. That’s certainly true of legendary drummer Steve Gadd, who turns 81 on April 9.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential session musicians in modern music, Gadd’s drumming has shaped some of the most recognizable songs across pop, rock, and jazz. Even if his name doesn’t immediately ring a bell, chances are his rhythms absolutely do.

One of his most famous contributions is the unforgettable groove on Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," a track whose crisp, inventive drum pattern helped define the song’s cool, understated feel. It’s the kind of beat that feels simple (until you try to play it).

He also brought his signature touch to the 84-year-old Simon's "Late in the Evening," another fan favorite that showcases his ability to blend technical precision with pure feel.

Beyond Simon, Gadd’s work stretches across decades of music that many readers will instantly recognize. He played on Steely Dan's jazz-rock masterpiece "Aja," including the title track, a recording still studied by musicians today for its complexity and groove.

His session work also includes Herbie Mann's "Hi-Jack," Chick Corea collaborations, and recordings with artists like James Taylor and Eric Clapton—a lineup that reads like a greatest-hits list of modern music history.

What makes Gadd especially remarkable is his versatility. Whether he was anchoring a soft singer-songwriter ballad or pushing forward a jazz fusion experiment, his drumming always served the song first. It’s part of why so many artists across genres sought him out again and again.

In 1984, his impact was formally recognized with induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the defining drummers of his generation.

As he celebrates his 81st birthday, it’s a reminder that some of the most important figures in music aren’t always center stage, but they are absolutely essential to the sound we remember most.

Best-Selling Author's Novel Ranked Among 'Best Books Ever' on Goodreads

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 10:59pm

After writing one of the most widely discussed novels in modern literature, William Golding is still earning recognition from readers decades later.

His 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies, has been ranked No. 29 on Goodreads' "Best Books Ever" list. Readers' votes placed it among the platform's greatest titles, showing just how strongly the novel continues to resonate with audiences.

Originally published in 1954, Lord of the Flies was Golding's debut novel. It tells the story of a group of schoolboys stranded on an island whose attempt to self-govern gradually collapsed into chaos and violence.

The themes of human nature and the breakdown of civilization drew massive attention, leading to the book's widespread incorporation into academic curricula and reputation as one of the greatest classics in all of literature.

The novel's influence has extended far beyond the page. It has been adapted into multiple films over the years, including notable versions released in 1963 and 1990. Now, a new adaptation is in development at Netflix, bringing the story to life for a new generation and renewing interest in Golding's work, making it a fitting moment for the book to reenter conversations around the greatest novels ever written.

Golding went on to build an extraordinary literary career. Beyond the lasting impact of his debut, he later won the Booker Prize for Rites of Passage in 1980 and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983, honors that reinforced his place among the most respected writers of the twentieth century.

In a 1995 interview with BBC, Golding reflected on his work, saying, "I am not satisfied with my books. People find them pessimistic. And I am not a pessimist, I am an optimist. And if their optimism—which is obvious to me as the background of my books— ... doesn't come out, then I ought to have conveyed it more explicitly, more vividly, and more importantly."

Even now, Lord of the Flies remains a book that readers return to for both its story and its complex ideas. Its unsettling portrayal of what happens when order breaks down has helped it maintain a lasting place in literature, and Goodreads users continue to recognize its impact.
