Sepideh Moafi on 'The Pitt's AI Debate — And Her ‘Back and Forth’ Dynamic With Robby (Exclusive)

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 8:00am

When Robby (Noah Wyle) walked back through the doors of The Pitt in Season 2, we were immediately introduced to a brand-new face: Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi). Coming to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center courtesy of the VA and several years of humanitarian work, she often treated the ED like a battlefield, with an affirming, yet softer tone. It was early on that we learned that she would be replacing Robby as the attending while he was away on his upcoming sabbatical. And we learned very quickly it would not be a smooth transition.

"I thought of it as kind of two animals in the wild," Moafi tells Parade in an exclusive interview. "Sort of circling each other and sniffing each other out, and kind of approaching, advancing towards each other, and then running away. There's definitely a curiosity and intrigue between them. But they have diametrically opposed views on medicine. It's like they speak the same language of medicine, but different dialects, and so it takes them a while to sort of figure each other out."

Moafi talks with Parade about the constantly shifting dynamic between Robby and Al-Hashimi throughout Season 2, as well as her response to The Pitt tackling the complicated topic of AI.

Dr. Al-Hashimi arrived at The Pitt with a new protocol, the most talked-about of which is using an AI-generated charting program. Give me your thoughts on this storyline, given the controversies around AI today, especially in the entertainment industry.
I mean, I think this was in one of the episodes, but it definitely came up in my research. This is a generalization, obviously; it depends on what department and what hospital and where we're sort of drawing these statistics from. But it was something like 28% of a doctor's time is spent at the patient bedside, and the rest is done dealing with paperwork, dealing with admin work, dealing with charting. And so when you think about that alone and the limitless need and limited resources. I mean, we're only human.

I had harsh judgments going into this about AI, and I still do. But you can never really judge a character. You have to try to understand. I think George Saunders talks about this. You have to understand. We become better, more dimensional human beings as we try to understand even our foes. And so with her, it's not like I ever looked at her as an enemy, or I judged her in that way. But it was hard for me to get into that, that part of her brain. Because, yeah, it's scary that we're seeing some of the real-life consequences with job loss and these "deep fakes." And, already at this point, you can only imagine what's going to happen in the next five years.

But I think it's a moving train, and particularly in medicine, it can be beneficial. It just really depends on stewardship, who is in charge. And that's often what gets complicated and corrupted. We don't necessarily have control over who takes charge and how this technology is used. But I think in the right hands, it can be incredibly powerful. Because it can reduce human error, it can relieve burnout. And that's where she's coming from. She sees this as a moving train, and if we don't get on now, it's going to control us. So we need to find ways of controlling it and use it to the benefit of our healthcare workers and our patients.

There's one point where Al-Hahsimi says, "Everything I've done in my career is an effort to improve the system. Just because it's broken doesn't mean you stop trying." That brings a lot of important context to her character, that she's not here to take over with an "evil AI," but try to rebuild structures rather than plodding through as per usual.
I think the more the season goes on, you see she's flawed like any other character. But she's deeply human, and her priority is elevating and enhancing patient care. That's the most important thing. So that line that you mentioned, it kind of exists at the core of who she is. Even though the healthcare system is hanging on by a thread, even though it's crumbling, we cannot let up. We have to hope. And I think part of her, some of her humanitarian work, you're in these devastated, war-torn countries, and yet you see the best of humanity too. You see the worst and the best of humanity. So I think you have to sort of fixate on the best of humanity, and that's what drives her forward.

Let's talk about her dynamic with Robby. Sometimes you forget that the two are just meeting for the first time today, and simultaneously sussing each other out. What's her initial assessment of Robby, and how does it change over the course of the day?
She thinks she has him figured out when she first meets him. Like, "Another dude in a position of power who's going to undermine me, who's going to condescend." And yet he's quite disarming and very talented and very committed and clearly a great leader in so many ways. She doesn't always see eye to eye with him. But I think she has a deep respect and admiration for him, and that continues to grow throughout the shift as she gets to know him more and gets to know his work more.

But in the beginning, I mean, I thought of it as kind of two animals in the wild, sort of circling each other and sniffing each other out, and kind of approaching, advancing towards each other, and then running away. There's definitely a curiosity and intrigue between them. But they have diametrically opposed views on medicine. It's like they speak the same language of medicine, but different dialects, and so it takes them a while to sort of figure each other out.

And that doesn't mean that they agree. It's just you learn to respect even people who don't, who don't agree with you. And I think that's a really important storyline for today. In this day that we're living in, we are really suffering from compartmentalizing each other, and our beliefs. It's important to try to live side by side, and it just feels like that doesn't matter anymore. And so watching in real time how detrimental it can be to two people who are not getting along in a professional environment where they have to coexist, I think it shines a light on us in our own lives, of why it's important to try to understand each other a little bit more, even if we don't agree with each other. Sometimes they're clashing, sometimes they come together. It's a lot of back and forth throughout the season.

Well one of those disagreements comes when Al-Hashimi overhears Langdon and Santos arguing, and realizes not only the extent of Langdon's addiction, but how Robby chose not to turn him in for stealing meds from the hospital. How does that information change her view of both Robby and Langdon?
It really does shift something in her. I think she sees Langdon initially as the most capable doctor in the hospital, and cannot understand why Robby is is being so rude. It seems petty in a way, not treating him like a leader who can take him under his wing and forgive him for any wrongs. And then she says, at one point — I think this line was cut — something like, "You're setting a great example for the rest of the team by seeking help." And I think that also that's foundational in who she is.

The difference between her and Robby is that she would seek help. If she's in Robby's position, she would seek help, put in a call to a neurologist. She called her neurologist, rather than trying to bury things down. And with Langdon, she really respects a doctor in his position that's going to get the help he needs and come back and show up and know that he's coming in as as the black sheep and having to start repeat his fourth year. So all of these things give Langdon points in her eyes.

But then when she finds out that Robby covered for him and didn't report this, there are hard lines for Doctor Al-Hashimi. And I think part of that is also because she's never been given any favors. And she doesn't understand why men are constantly afforded these "get-out-of-jail-free" cards and women in similar positions aren't. That's at least what I was working with in my mind. Why does she then not turn on him? She can't really look past this, because it's just not fair. And I don't mean to suggest that it's not fair, because she wouldn't be punished. It's just not the right thing to do.

We also get to see another side of Al-Hashimiin the case of the mother with the overheated child. She is able to stop the mom from stepping into traffic, saving her life in the process. But, after that, she admits, "I don't know if motherhood has made more understanding or more judgmental." You have spoken to a lot of the empathetic qualities Al-Hashimi presents. But this seems like a different side of that skillset.
I mean, it's fascinating. Because what we see of this character as the episodes progress is that we see more of her heart. We see more of her value, what she values and where her values stand. We see her empathy. And then in this moment, she reveals a little bit of a different part of herself, a different side of herself. That she struggles with her own judgments, and that she is human. We're not perfect. We thought she was an AI-championing corporate head.

She struggles within herself, and she's being honest in that moment. She's being vulnerable. And I put that in the same place as her seeking help, her calling her neurologist. She doesn't claim to be perfect, but I think part of what makes her such a strong, compelling leader is that she wears all parts of herself in the job. She doesn't try to hide her sort of internal conflict about this. Because what we see before that is how she's shown up for this woman, and how she's comforted and cared for this woman. And in one private moment with Dr. McKay, she reveals that it's not so black and white.

You talk about your own journey in getting to know Al-Hashimi. What's been your reaction to how fans have responded to your character throughout the season?
I think that, as much as the audience or audiences might resist her presence, I think part of what makes her place in the show so interesting is the fact that it's kind of refreshing, actually, whether you like it or not, to see our golden boy challenged. Because the show, something that I think does so beautifully, reminds us it's not about saviors. The hospital can't function without every single person who works in that hospital. There's a level of interdependence among these healthcare workers, and it reminds us that we have to band together as a community to solve issues, to treat people, to overcome whatever difficulties we may face.

And I think there's something so beautiful about that. Actually, we don't need saviors. We need each other. And so I think from the differing perspectives of who this character is, what she does is she does stir up some conversation of how Dr. Robby, even when he doesn't agree with her, he's forced to embrace her on the team, whether he likes it or not. And what that does for all the drama and all the dynamics? I think it's really interesting.

1976 Soft Rock Hit, Ranked No. 3 on Billboard, Was Rejected by Iconic ‘70s Band

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:42am

In 1976, blues guitarist Elvin Bishop had a hit record with “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” The song, which appeared on Bishop's 1975 album Struttin' My Stuff, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 22, 1976.

The lyrics, about a man who is blindsided by love after having casual sexual relationships with “about a million girls,” were penned by Bishop. But a '70s music icon rejected the song when it was proposed for a musical about his famous Mormon family—and it was due to the suggestive lyrics.

"Oh, we turned down about five songs because of the words, including ‘Fooled Around and Fell in Love,’” the Osmond Brothers’ Jay Osmond told The Irish News in 2022.

The Osmonds Musical told the story of brothers Jay, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Donny and their rise to superstardom in the ‘70s. “It will be part ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ part ‘Jersey Boys,’” Jay Osmond teased to the Deseret News in 2019. “Without the swearing, of course."

The musical featured more than 30 songs, many of them Osmond hits, but “Fooled Around” didn’t make the cut because it didn’t align with the group’s morals.

Elvin Bishop didn’t actually sing ‘Fooled Around and Fell in Love’

Bishop once said that “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” practically wrote itself.

"The better a song is, the less story there is to it, as far as I can tell," he said in an interview with Songfacts. "The best songs just come rushing out. I don't know if life squeezes them out of you, or if they're just so right that they take no thought. I don't know. Or if you're given a temporary connection to the flow of the universe, or whatever it is. But that song just damn near wrote itself."

While Bishop is credited as the performer of “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” he didn’t actually sing on the track. The gravely-voiced guitarist felt he didn’t have the right voice for the song, so he brought in backup singer Mickey Thomas.

"My voice is very plain. It's better suited for blues,” Bishop explained. “It's been good for me, because it's made my songwriting strong, because to really get over with a voice like mine, which is not a thrill in itself - the quality of the voice - you have to have a strong story and really good words to capture people's imagination.”

“I tried singing it, and I said, 'That's not buttering my biscuit, my vocal on this. Why don't we give Mickey a shot at this?'” he recalled. “And the producer said, 'Well, that's big of you.' And I said, 'Well, I don't think so. It's just common sense, you know?' And Mickey just tore it up."

In an interview with Alabama Life & Culture, Bishop added of Thomas, “He got in there and just killed it.”

Where Jamie Ding Ranks Among 'Jeopardy!’s Top 10 All-Time Winners

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:35am

As Jamie Ding’s winnings continue to climb, fans are starting to wonder how he stacks up against the biggest winners in Jeopardy! history.

The current champion has had an impressive run so far, racking up 19th consecutive wins with his totals climbing past the $500,000 mark for a total of $539,573, as of April 8, making Ding a household name this season.

But when compared to the biggest winners in Jeopardy! history, he still has a long way to go before cracking the all-time top 10.

That said, the feat may not be as impossible as it seems.

Over the years, a handful of contestants have turned strong runs into record-breaking careers, thanks to both dominant streaks and lucrative tournament appearances.

Per the official Jeopardy! Leaderboard of Legends, Ding has already ranked in the number 10 spot in consecutive games won (as of April 8), and in the 7th spot in highest winnings in regular season play.

After a five-game total of $131,802 in March, Ding already secured his spot in the next Tournament of Champions, per TVInsider. And his latest winnings also put him in a tie with David Madden and Jason Zuffranieri for the 8th-longest win streak since the five-game limit was lifted in 2003.

Here’s a look at the top 10 highest-earning Jeopardy! contestants of all time in all-time-winnings, and where Ding could eventually land.

1. Brad Rutter — $4,968,436

2. Ken Jennings — $4,372,700

3. James Holzhauer — $3,612,216

4. Matt Amodio — $1,818,601

5. Amy Schneider — $1,682,800

6. Yogesh Raut — $1,096,403

7. Mattea Roach — $810,983

8. Victoria Groce — $772,801

9. David Madden — $763,733

10. Cris Pannullo — $748,286

As for Ding, he's not in the Top 10 just yet, but he's moving in the right direction.

His run may still be unfolding, but it's been nothing short of impressive, making Season 42 a must-watch. Each new episode brings him closer to joining the legends and cementing himself as one of the modern champions, with fans watching closely to see just how far his winning streak will go on the Alex Trebek stage.

Best-Selling Novel Ranked 'Hardest Book to Put Down' on Goodreads

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:26am

While there are plenty of novels out there to choose from when it comes to picking your next read, some stories are just too good to put down once you start them. In fact, there's one novel that came out almost 20 years ago that has officially been declared the "hardest book to put down" by fans on Goodreads.

In a reader-voted list on the popular site called "Hardest Book to Put Down,"Suzanne Collins' first book in her hit dystopian series, The Hunger Games, was crowned the book that was the hardest to stop reading once you started.

As you could maybe guess, the sequel, Catching Fire, came in second place, although the third book, Mockingjay, was a little further down the list in sixth place. Other books that ranked high included Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Fifty Shades of Grey, and Twilight.

The story follows a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives in a dystopian world where children are forced to compete in a to-the-death competition against people from other districts in a televised event. After her younger sister's name is called to participate, Katniss volunteers to take her place, and soon enough, she kickstarts an unexpected revolution with her as the spark.

While the book trilogy was a huge success on its own, its popularity grew tenfold when the movie adaptations started coming out, with the first film released in 2012. Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss, while other main characters are played by Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, and more.

The sequel film was released in 2013, while the last book was split into two films that came out in 2014 and 2015. A prequel film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, based on the book of the same name, debuted in theaters in 2023, while another film based on Harrelson's character Haymitch Abernathy's origin story, called The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is set to come out in November 2026.

Delta Airlines Officially Adds Fan-Favorite Brand as In-Flight Snack

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:13am

On April 1, Delta Airlines added a brand-new mid-flight snack to their lineup, and it's one that chocolate lovers everywhere should be excited about.

MadeGood's fan-favorite chocolate chip granola bars are officially being offered in-flight on Delta Airlines, providing travelers with a quick, delicious treat that actually solves a little-known problem when it comes to eating on airplanes.

If you've ever gotten the sense that food just doesn't taste as good in the air, it's possible that you're not imagining it. Studies indicate that, due to a variety of factors, including dryness and low pressure in the cabin, air travel can actually diminish travelers' taste bud sensitivity to sweet and salty foods by approximately 30%.

If that wasn't enough of an issue, many airlines' go-to snack options are foods that are also dry, such as a pack of pretzels or peanuts. Now, Delta and MadeGood have collaborated to provide Delta flyers with an option that won't further dry out their mouth (and actually tastes good, despite taste buds' lower sensitivity).

MadeGood's chocolate chip granola bars, one of the brand's most popular items, focus on the rich dark chocolate flavor and granola base texture as a way to provide a satisfying snack, even when taste and smell are being impacted 30,000 feet in the air.

Even outside of the effect airplanes have on travelers' tastebuds, though, MadeGood has plenty to offer consumers. The chocolate chip granola bars are just 100 calories each, certified organic, vegan and nut free. The latter also makes this a perfect airplane snack, as it means that MadeGood bars are a safe, allergy inclusive option for an airplane cabin.

The MadeGood chocolate chip granola bars are also made with broader consumers in mind, with their simple, ethically sourced ingredients—something that modern day buyers are often invested in.

MadeGood bars are already available on Delta flights, so flyers can taste the difference for themselves the next time they fly with the airline.

Bryan Cranston Fought 12 Years for 'Malcolm in the Middle' While the Creator Kept Saying No

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:12am

When Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair premieres on Hulu and Disney+ tomorrow, April 10, Bryan Cranston will have earned it. About 12 times over.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, Cranston revealed he was the driving force behind the revival, going back to roughly 2013. Fans kept approaching him asking what happened to Malcolm, whether the baby Lois was carrying at the end of the original series had been a girl. Cranston said he had no answers, so he went to creator Linwood Boomer with a pitch. Boomer's response: 'Absolutely not. I'm retired. Done. Forget it.'

Cranston kept going back. A year later, Boomer said he didn't think so. Cranston read that as progress. 'I took that as progress from 'absolutely not' to 'I don't think so,' he told Colbert, 'and then slowly chip away at that.' About three years ago, Boomer called him and said he had an idea, and it was a great one.

The result is four episodes built around Hal and Lois's 40th wedding anniversary, with Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield all returning. Cranston also serves as an executive producer on the revival.

It was not the most dignified 12-year campaign. The original series was famously hard on Cranston physically, and the Colbert interview resurfaced some of the evidence, including a sequence in which Cranston was covered in 60,000 live bees. He was stung twice, he told Colbert. Both stings were in the same location. The bee wrangler, he said, declined to assist.

In between pitching Boomer and covering himself in insects, Cranston turned 70 last month, a birthday he treats seriously. 'At 70 years old, you can't fool yourself anymore,' he told Colbert. Fifty, he said, you tell yourself you feel strong. Sixty, you figure you're doing all right. 'Seventy is like, 'Oo, I'm old.'

His doctors have apparently told him to stop drinking, which he acknowledged on camera while accepting a margarita.

When the conversation turned to his craft, Cranston described building every character around what he calls 'the big five,' strength, weakness, ambition, secret, and fear. Once he can identify those five things, he said, he has the foundation he needs. He compared it to a good pair of underwear.

For anyone who spent time with the Wilkerson family the first time around, the fact that Hal's bumbling, well-meaning warmth is back on screen tomorrow is due almost entirely to Cranston's refusal to take no for an answer.

This Fan-Favorite Budget Hotel Across From Universal Just Got a Massive Makeover

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:10am

If your favorite part of an Orlando trip is finding that one loophole that saves you both time and money, you’re going to love this update. The longtime favorite for families who want to be "on property" without the high price tag—the former Holiday Inn & Suites right on Caravan Court—just completed a massive renovation and has officially reopened as the Courtyard by Marriott Across Universal Orlando.

The location has always been its secret weapon, but now the interiors actually match the convenience. It sits directly across the street from the main CityWalk entrance, meaning you can skip the parking garage madness and just walk across the pedestrian bridge to get to the Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure gates.

The multi-million-dollar glow-up has completely reimagined the 390 guestrooms. They’ve swapped out the old-school hotel look for a much sleeker, modern aesthetic with crisp white linens, 55-inch LCD TVs, and—most importantly for families—134 one- and two-bedroom suites. These suites are a total lifesaver if you need a separate living area and a microwave to keep the crew fed between park dashes. You’ll also find the new Bistro & Bar in the lobby serving Starbucks(crucial for a 9 a.m. rope drop) and the "Crate" grab-and-go market for those late-night snack runs.

View this post on Instagram The "Walkable" Math

For anyone debating between this and the on-site Universal hotels, the 2026 pricing tells a story of strategy versus savings. This spring, on-site "Prime Value" resorts like Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Aventura are often landing in the $180 to $240 range per night. Meanwhile, the new Courtyard is consistently holding steady at $160 to $190.

The biggest trade-off? Early Park Admission. Staying at a Universal resort gets you into the parks (including the now one-year-old Epic Universe) a full hour before the general public. If your goal is to be the first in line for Hagrid’s or Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry without waiting two hours, that extra $50 a night for an on-site room is likely the best money you’ll spend.

However, if you aren't a morning person—or if you’re a family of four—the math shifts. Saving $50–$75 a night at the Courtyard over a four-night stay "finds" you $200 to $300. While that won't cover Universal Express Passes for the whole family (those are currently starting around $175 per person for peak dates), it will cover a high-end dinner at CityWalk or the cost of your gas and snacks for the trip.

Related: The Epic Universe Ride Order That Saves 74% More Time This Spring Break

If you’re a Marriott Bonvoy family, the math gets even better. This property currently requires roughly 30,000 to 45,000 points per night. If you can cover your stay with points, you’ve effectively saved the entire $800+ hotel bill, which is more than enough to buy Express Passes for the whole crew. You might miss that 8 a.m. entry, but you'll spend the rest of the day walking onto rides while everyone else waits in the Florida sun.

Even though this isn't an official Universal resort, it is a Universal Partner Hotel, which comes with some major perks for Epic Universe too. You still get a complimentary shuttle that runs directly to the main CityWalk hub and a separate shuttle service to Epic Universe. Plus, there’s a Vacation Planning Center right in the lobby to help you skip the ticket window lines.

Southwest Airlines' New Rule Could Affect How You Pack Your Carry-On

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:08am

If you're a frequent flyer who never boards a plane without a portable charger, Southwest Airlines has some new rules you'll want to know.

Starting April 20, Southwest will limit passengers to one lithium-powered portable charger per person. Each device must have a capacity of 100 watt-hours or less, and where you stow it matters just as much as what you bring.

Under yet another new policy from the airline, portable chargers must be kept on your person or in a carry-on bag stored under the seat in front of you. Overhead bins are officially off the table.

There's one more change worth noting: Southwest is also banning the use of in-seat power outlets to recharge portable battery packs mid-flight. You can still use your charger, but the device must remain visible at all times.

The airline says the updates are designed to improve its ability to "contain and mitigate lithium battery incidents," and the timing makes sense. According to FAA data cited by Reuters, there were 97 reported incidents involving smoke, fire, or extreme heat linked to batteries on flights last year, up from 89 the year prior.

READ MORE: Southwest Flight Attendants ‘Up In Arms’ Over Controversial New Airline Policy

Dave Hunt, Southwest's vice president of safety and security, addressed how the airline plans to handle the transition for travelers. "To ensure a smooth and informed customer journey, Southwest will notify customers about this updated policy at key moments leading up to their trip—including pre-trip and check-in, so they have time to plan and prepare," he said.

The longer-term plan involves making portable chargers less of a necessity altogether. "By mid-year 2027, our entire fleet will feature in-seat power, reducing reliance on portable chargers and supporting a more consistent, convenient inflight experience," Hunt added.

So just make sure you double-check what's in your bag before you head to the airport next time.

When Does ‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Episode 14 Come Out? How and Where to Watch

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:04am

Well, the time is finally coming, and the penultimate episode of The Pitt Season 2 is here.

Thankfully, one crisis was averted in the final moments of Episode 13, when the hospital's systems came back online after a cyber-attack-preventative blackout. Taco Bell Is Launching the ‘Next Evolution’ of Its Popular Chicken Nuggets in Just a Few Days

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:01am

Taco Bell is giving its menu a hot new item—literally.

One month after hosting its third annual Live Mas Live event, the fast-food favorite is finally gearing up to roll out another new addition. So far, fans have had a chance to try its new Chocolate Fudge and Caramel Empanadas as well as its Crispy Chicken Crunchwrap Slider, and in just a few short days, they'll have the opportunity to order another one of the dozen or so items that Taco Bell said it will debut in 2026: its Diablo Dusted Crispy Chicken Nuggets.

The company called the newcomer its "next evolution of Taco Bell’s crispy chicken journey," noting that it already has plans to expand the first-time offer later this year with two more "flavor-dusted" entrées.

Taco Bell Is Rolling Out New Diablo Dusted Crispy Chicken Nuggets

As their name would imply, Taco Bell's new Diablo Dusted Chicken Nuggets are coated in the flavors of its popular Diablo hot sauce, just not in a way that anyone's seen before.

Seemingly inspired by the flavor dust on Flamin' Hot Cheetos, Taco Bell has transformed its spiciest liquid hot sauce—a fan favorite for over a decade—into a solid, crumb-like coating that packs serious heat. The recipe then takes that flavor dust and evenly sprinkles it over the chunks of premium all-white meat chicken that's been seasoned with "bold Mexican spices" and coated in Taco Bell's original, extra-crunchy tortilla chip breading.

"Diablo Sauce has a cult following, it’s that lingering heat with a hint of lime. Turning that iconic flavor into a dust reimagines how that heat hits," Liz Matthews, global chief food innovation officer, shared in a statement. "By coating our nuggets with Diablo Dust, we’re unlocking a new level of intensity and opening the doors for even more creative, dusted flavor experiences with our Crispy Chicken. This is just the beginning!"

Parade was lucky enough to score a first taste of the new Diablo Dusted nuggets at the third LML, and we're not going to lie to you, they're really hot—like really, really hot. Our editors are accustomed to eating sauces and peppers with impressive Scoville ratings, but they were sweating after a few bites of the Diablo nuggets paired with the recently released Hidden Valley Diablo Ranch. It's a truly devilish level of heat—enjoy at your own risk (and might we suggest having a glass of milk or at least a Dirty Baja Blast ready).

When Will the Diablo Dusted Nuggets Be on Taco Bell Menus?

According to the official April 9 announcement, Taco Bell said its new Diablo Dusted Nuggets will be available at restaurants nationwide beginning on Thursday, April 16, for a limited time (prices may vary).

The new item can be ordered as a five-piece (includes one sauce; $4.49) or a 10-piece nugget (includes two sauces; $7.49), or as a meal with the 10-piece combo (includes regular-size Nacho Fries, a large fountain drink and two saucesl $9.99) or Diablo Dusted Crispy Chicken Nuggets Deluxe combo (includes a five-piece chicken nugget, choice of sauce, plus a Chalupa Supreme, Crunchy Taco, Nacho Fries and a medium fountain drink; $10.99).

Fans are also invited to "get in on the heat" with a special Tuesday Drop that's giving select Taco Bell Rewards Members a five-piece order of its Diablo Dusted Chicken Nuggets for just $1. Here's how it works: the first 30,000 verified Taco Bell Rewards Members to click "claim reward" in its mobile app when the promo launches on May 5 at 2 p.m. will score the special offer (limit one per guest).

Who Are Laurie Metcalf’s Kids? Meet the Actress’s 4 Children and Their Dads

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 7:00am

On screen, Laurie Metcalf has played just about every kind of mom imaginable: a harsh critic in Lady Bird, a devout Texan in Big Bang Theory, a revenge-seeking maniac in Scream 2, and now an accidental criminal in Netflix’s Big Mistakes. Off-screen, she’s just a regular mom of four.

…With three Emmys and two Tonys, of course.

Her eldest daughter, actress Zoe Perry (Young Sheldon), once said of her mother, “For me, she's always been such an inspiration because not only is she incredibly talented — I might be biased — but she's always been such a good example of having a really strong work ethic and taking pride and value in the work that she does.”

Keep reading to learn more about Metcalf’s children, including how many have followed in her professional footsteps and who their fathers are.

How many children does Laurie Metcalf have?

Metcalf has three biological children — Zoe Perry, Will Roth and Mae Roth — and one adopted child, Donovan Roth

Who are the fathers of Laurie Metcalf’s children? Jeff Perry

Metcalf’s first husband was fellow actor Jeff Perry (My So-Called Life, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal), whom she married in 1983. The two met in the 1970s as young performers in Chicago’s theater scene, where they were founding members of the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company. They welcomed one daughter, Zoe, before divorcing in 1986.

Though their marriage didn't work out, Metcalf and Perry remained on good terms. “We just knew we loved this girl, and we weren’t gonna screw that up," Perry told TheNew York Post. Metcalf even befriended his second wife, casting director Linda Lowy, whom he married in 1989.

“I don’t know what to call my relationship with Linda, it’s so solid and strong,” Metcalf told ThePost. “There’s not really a term for it, but I love her, so I call her my sister-in-law.”

Matt Roth

In a classic case of on-set romance, Metcalf met her second husband, Matt Roth, while filming Season 5 of Roseanne, where he appeared in a six-episode arc as Jackie’s abusive boyfriend, Fisher. They were together for more than a decade before marrying in 2005, then separated in 2008 and officially divorced in 2014. They share three children: Will, Mae and Donovan.

Did Laurie Metcalf have a baby at 50?

Metcalf’s third biological child, Mae, was born via surrogacy on June 3, 2005—13 days before the Getting On actress turned 50.

Who are Laurie Metcalf’s children? Zoe Perry

Metcalf welcomed her first child, Zoe, on Sept. 26, 1983, when she was 28 years old.

She and Perry, who split when Zoe was 2, had an “unwritten pact” that they wouldn’t let their daughter get into acting until at least after high school. “I didn’t want her to have to deal with the stress," Metcalf told People

Although Zoe made two brief appearances on Roseanne as a child, playing a younger version of her mother’s character, Jackie, she showed little interest in acting early on. It wasn’t until after graduating from Northwestern University that she chose to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

She’s since made appearances on Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Grey’s Anatomy, and shared the screen with her father on Scandal. But she’s best known for playing Sheldon’s mom, Mary Cooper, on Young Sheldon, the prequel to The Big Bang Theory, and now Georgia & Mandy’s First Marriage, a spinoff of Young Sheldon. The role of Mary was originated by Metcalf, who played it opposite Jim Parsons in the flagship series.

“When I first started pursuing acting professionally out of college, it was very much in my head that there would be comparisons with potentially both of my parents, and I found that pretty intimidating,” Zoe told Backstage. “When one is starting out, you’re trying to do right by them and not embarrass [yourself] and not embarrass them. But with time and with experience and getting some jobs and getting more confident along the way, it’s been more and more of a pleasure to encounter some of those comparisons.”

On the personal front, Zoe is married to producer Gab Taraboulsy, whom she married in 2022. Like her mother, Zoe tends to keep her family life out of the public eye. She doesn't have a verified Instagram account, so don't let any fan-run pages fool you!

Will Roth

Metcalf welcomed a son, Will, in 1993, ten years after the birth of her first child. Although Metcalf’s second-born walked a few red carpets with his mom as a kid, he’s now living a decidedly private life out of the spotlight.

A since deleted Instagram post by his sister Mae revealed that Will is married to grant manager Angela Saggiomo. The couple lives in Idaho, where Metcalf and Roth moved with Will in 2003, to an 80-acre ranch in Victor. (By that time, Zoe was in college.)

“We sort of bought it sight-unseen, since it was covered in 6 feet of snow at the time,” Metcalf told The Chicago Tribune in 2004. “It’s a tiny cabin, just one bathroom and two bedrooms. There’s a vegetable garden, a pond, and we’ve got lots of animals: horses, cows, a bull, goats, donkeys, chickens, peacocks and, of course, cats and dogs.”

According to TMZ, Metcalf got the ranch in her divorce from Roth.

Mae Roth

Metcalf’s third child arrived via surrogate in 2005. As with most aspects of the Emmy-winning actress's personal life, she has not publicly addressed her surrogacy experience.

She has, however, given some insight into the challenges of raising a teen while promoting Lady Bird, which centered around a complicated mother-daughter relationship. “I really related to how much they loved each other but also how difficult it was—how they could aggravate each other,” she told Slant. “Being a mother, of course I could identify with that turbulent time [of adolescence].”

Like her big sister, Mae is following in her mother’s professional footsteps. She’s currently a sophomore in the BFA Musical Theatre program at Marymount Manhattan College. Unlike her family, however, she shares at least some of her personal and professional life on Instagram.

View this post on Instagram View this post on Instagram Donovan Roth

Metcalf and Roth fostered Donovan sometime around 2006 and adopted him soon after. He’s now roughly in his mid-twenties and keeps a low-profile.

It's possible Metcalf fostered another child, or children: The New York Post published a story in 2008 that referred to her "young foster son."

Was Laurie Metcalf’s daughter on The Conners

Yes. Zoe appeared in two episodes of the show’s seventh and final season, playing a cop who disapproved of Jackie's idea to rejoin the police force at her age.

“It was so much fun to watch them play off of each other,” The Connersexecutive producer Dan Caplantold TV Insider. “I actually think they might be different kinds of actors, but there’s such innate chemistry there that those scenes could have gone on forever, and we would’ve been happy.”

Commenting many years prior on how her famous parents influenced her career, Zoe told Backstage, “I can’t deny that there’s a great privilege in having parents who are established in the field that I’m pursuing. …They’ve been such great role models not only talent-wise, but also in how they lead their lives and the reasons why they’ve pursued this.”

They truly believe in their success, so nothing seems too far-fetched or outlandish. Their perseverance and optimism is truly infectious.

March

Being captivating and effective doesn’t necessarily mean being the loudest in the room—something people born in March know all too well. November

November might be surprised that they’re not higher on the list, but don’t worry. They’re one of the top five most powerful and influential birth months. November-born are a blend of psychic, unwavering Scorpio and expansive, worldly Sagittarius. They have an uncanny ability to look into the future thanks to their psychic Scorpio senses. The Sagittarius energy comes through with unfaltering courage and bravery. Although they’re mighty, they may struggle with being authoritative. November-born have a mysterious aura, mostly due to paranoia of being misrepresented. Once they move past this, November-born might enjoy sharing with and inspiring others.

July

Similar to November, July might be miffed to find that they’re lower on the list. After all, July-born are a winning mix of Cancer and Leo. Cancer’s energy speaks to being a compassionate, intuitive leader that’s backed by the creative, confident Leo’s spirit. July-born have immense potential, but they must be genuinely self-assured to do so. Their Cancerian side can be wishy-washy, and their Leo side struggles with bravado. July-born flail when they struggle with being decisive or if they lack conviction in their endeavors. If July-born fix these issues, their authority and reach will surely soar.

CURIOUS?: How You'll Meet Your Soulmate, Based on Birth Month

October

Individuals born during October have a chance to elevate their power and influence. They embody Libra’s sociability and geniality, as well as Scorpio’s perseverance and strength. Despite having these zodiac signs’ strengths, October-born also carry their struggles. October-born are more susceptible to other people’s opinions and expectations than they let on. Someone else’s words will linger in the back of October’s mind. October-born also struggle with dogmatism and holding grudges. If October can keep moving along and not take other’s views as gospel, they could gain so much more power and influence over others.

June

June, there’s potential to be ranked higher. People born during this month are a wonderful combination of Gemini and Cancer. Gemini bestows curiosity and the gift of gab; Cancer blesses with intuition and empathy. June-born are known for their wit and emotional intelligence, but they experience more struggles than most. Individuals with this birth month are known for getting easily distracted, so they’re easily influenced by others. June-born also struggle with feeling mentally and emotionally overwhelmed, so they’re not always grounded. June-born can step into a more potent, persuasive position when they clear their mind and refine their focus.

February

People born in February have power and influence, but they often lack direction and commitment. Individuals with this birth month are a unique mix of individualistic Aquarius and fantastical Pisces. They’re non-conformists who march to the beat of their own drum. Others might look up to them, but February-born struggle with this pressure. February-born don’t like being held to a standard or expectation because they want the freedom to change who they are without owing anyone an explanation. Instead of making this part of their influential power, February-born abandon opportunities to inspire and direct altogether.

May

Individuals with May birthdays don’t look for power or influence. They lean into their easygoing Taurus nature, because they would rather have a placid, safe life over a high-energy, action-oriented one. They might have a chance at being compelling thanks to having intelligent Gemini energy within them. However, their Gemini spirit is scattered and overly mutable. As a result, they don’t care to assume leadership roles. May-born are more likely to be swayed rather than doing the swaying. Overall, May-born aren’t strong contenders for authority, because they prefer slow living and be inspired by others.

August

August has a lot to work on if they want to be more empowered and compelling. People with this birth month have Virgo’s intellectual prowess and Leo’s natural talent. However, they also struggle with Virgo’s anxiety and Leo’s bravado. August wants to be seen as self-assured, capable, and captivating, but achieving this takes a toll on them. August-born are more likely to overcompensate, mostly to quiet their nagging inner critic. They don’t respond well to feedback or pushback, so there’s little room for growth. If August-born can be more genuine and open, they could overcome their weaknesses to gain actual power.

FUN!: Which National Park Mirrors Your Soul, Based on Your Birth Month

September

What gives, September? People born during this month are a fantastic combination of Virgo and Libra. They can tap into Virgo’s astuteness and Libra’s social talents. Although promising, September-born come in last because they lean more into Virgo’s and Libra’s weaknesses. Virgo can be nitpicky, so September-born struggle with being their own worst critic. Additionally, Libra can be wishy-washy, so September-born are more susceptible to their peer’s opinions than other birth months. As a result, individuals born during this month are least likely to believe in their power and more likely to follow someone else’s lead rather than be the leader.

"She didn't really want to talk on the phone…And she didn't live close by, she's in Los Angeles," he said. O'Hara died at her Los Angeles home following a brief illness, with a pulmonary embolism confirmed as her cause of death and rectal cancer cited as an underlying factor.

Michael shared that he had a dream he had just a few days before his sister died—one he now believes was a goodbye of sorts. "I always cherish the times I can meet with a loved one in the dream state. Actually, oddly enough, I had a dream a few days before she died, my sister. And I was hugging her, which was really beautiful. And I guess it was sort of a goodbye."

Since her passing, Catherine has visited him in his dreams again, and this time, the setting was a much happier one. The dream took him back to the nights he spent at her apartment during her SCTV years, when she'd let him crash in her spare room. "She was just so happy and very busy in the other world that she's now in... it's beautiful."

"We all have our own experiences that are related to us and our own deceased loved ones and we're all interconnected, and the love, you know, continues no matter what. They're always with us,” he closed with.

"Still stunning!" one of her fans gushed under the flawless video on Wednesday, while another user told Porizkova, "You have never been better."

The former Sports Illustrated Swimsuitcover star also took the opportunity to send her followers an inspirational message about body positivity, while pointing out just how far she's come on her own journey of "self-acceptance."

"I will be 61 tomorrow, and I understand that this might sound crazy to you, but 40 years ago, when I was 21 and when I was at the height of my career and supermodel-dom, that was when I felt the most insecure," Porizkova stated in the video, due in part, she said, to the "endless comparisons to other models" at the time.

"I never seemed to be good enough," she said, adding that her insecurity was also caused by the fact that her own self-worth "was entirely tied to [her] looks."

But now four decades later, Porizkova said she's been kicking her workout routing up "like 10 notches" in preparation for the summertime, which she insisted is "not necessarily so I can look best in this bikini — but to feel my best in this 6th decade."

However, at the end of the video, Porizkova quipped, "You know, actually, who am I kidding?"... I do want to look my best this summer, but not necessarily in a bikini — in a wedding dress," she teased, as she is currently engaged to writer and producer Jeff Greenstein.

The Minimalist Packing Method That Never Fails Me

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 6:10am

I love being as minimalist as possible in every aspect of my life. A part of that is thanks to the fact that I live in a 275-square foot apartment in New York City, and another part is thanks to the fact that I genuinely enjoy having less things to worry about. I definitely bring this mindset into packing whenever I go on trips, and proudly call myself a carry-on pro when it comes to any trip that is two weeks or less.

I first began to experiment with minimalist packing when I was on tour with a Broadway show for an entire year. I traveled the country with just a single suitcase, and hopped between cold weather and warm weather constantly. This taught me to really pair down my items–especially clothing.

Now, when I go on vacation, I only ever need a carry-on to fit everything I need. And trust me, I still look extremely fashionable and put together while doing it. Plus, I don’t have to stress about my luggage getting lost, and I don’t have to lug heavy luggage everywhere I go. All together, it makes traveling much easier.

Use The 4-3-3-2-1 Method

In a Youtube video by lifestyle creator Christina Mychas, she shares her tips for packing a carry-on with one extremely easy method. Originally, she had tried the 5-4-3-2-1 method, and found it useful, but she still overpacked a tiny bit. Mychas decided to switch it up and adjust the method slightly. Now, it’s the 4-3-3-2-1 method. This means that she packed four tops, three bottoms, three pairs of shoes, two layers pieces, one set of pajamas, one bathing suit, one set of workout gear and accessories.

As she shows herself packing, she explains that you can swap things out in a way that works for you. For example, you can swap out one of the pairs of pants for a dress, or one of the pairs of shoes for an extra shirt. To help figure out exactly what she needs for a trip, Mychas focuses on three key things: the weather, the activities she will be doing and the overall vibe of the location.

While choosing her clothing items with those specifics in mind, she also focuses on keeping her clothing cohesive with each other. Mixing and matching is extremely important when creating a capsule-type wardrobe. Plus, with her two layering pieces, they can be added to almost any outfit in her wardrobe–and it creates an entirely new look.

Without realizing it, I’ve basically used this method for years, and I absolutely stand by it. When you pare your wardrobe down to just four pieces per category—as I recently did for a cruise—you’re still left with 16 possible outfit combinations. Not only does packing like a minimalist lighten your physical load, but I’ve also found it unlocks a new level of styling creativity. I actually love using vacations as a challenge to put together looks I might never have thought of in my day-to-day life.

Keep Your Toiletries Minimal, Too bars of soap are great for travel

Getty Images

Many people are used to buying travel-sized versions of shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, and other liquid toiletries that they might need. My absolute number one tip is to stop doing that. I have fully transitioned to bars of soap for my hair and body, and it has been completely life changing. Not only is it great for the environment (no plastic!) but it’s also a great space saver. You can simply place your bars of soap into little ziplocks, and they can slide into any little area of your suitcase that has room.

You won’t have to worry about them exploding while traveling, and you won’t have to worry about going over the TSA allowance for liquids. I end up only bringing a liquid foundation, toothpaste and facial moisturizer as my liquids. Most other items that you might need can be found in a solid form. Face sunscreen? Try a solid stick version. Blush and contour? Powders all the way. Making this small change will do wonders for your packing.

1972 Hit Inspired by the Stones Became the Most Iconic Guitar Riff in Rock History

Thu, 04/09/2026 - 6:04am

Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” boasts one of the most iconic guitar riffs in rock history — four notes in G minor, famously played on a Fender Stratocaster, and powerful enough to send an arena full of fans into a frenzy.

The funny part? That now-legendary riff wasn’t meticulously crafted — it was stumbled upon.

According to American Songwriter, the track is one of those rare classics that became a hit “entirely by accident.” What sounds like rock perfection actually started as a warm-up.

“Despite this riff’s success, it was written as nothing more than a warm-up exercise for guitarist Ritchie Blackmore,” the publication notes. “This inversion of Beethoven’s Fifth … is a simple riff with powerful effects. No guitarist has ever done as much with as little.”

Blackmore himself has been just as candid about its origin, telling Guitar Player in August 2025, “I didn’t think it would be a hit — it was just something Ian and I banged out on the spur of the moment. We were just having fun.”

Part of the magic, he explains, was in its simplicity — a lesson borrowed from bands like TheKinks and The Rolling Stones, who actually loaned their mobile studio to the band to record their 1972 album in Montreux, Switzerland, after their original theater burned down.

“I was always looking for a very simple riff to play,” Blackmore says. “I’d heard the Kinks do ‘You Really Got Me,’ and the Stones were playing ‘Satisfaction,’ so I felt if you want to be heard, you have to keep it simple.”

But beneath that simplicity lies a clever twist: The riff is also loosely inspired by Beethoven.

“I thought I’d play [Beethoven’s Fifth] backwards, put something to it,” Blackmore says. “It’s an interpretation — if you turn it around and play it back and forth, it’s actually Beethoven’s Fifth. So, I owe him a lot of money.”

Released on Machine Head in 1972 and as a single the following year, “Smoke on the Water” climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band’s biggest hit — and a permanent fixture in the rock canon.

“I never get tired of playing it,” bassist Roger Glover tells Guitar Player. “Someone once said it’s like having a button you press to make the audience go nuts.”

And honestly? They’re not wrong.
