With nearly every chapter ending with a cliffhanger, readers stay locked in, turning every page to learn the fate of Collins’ characters. The author’s themes of media, power, and survival become uncomfortably real, hitting close to home, and the emotional investment gets turned up to an 11, as relationships, alliances, and betrayals are tested and endured.

Collins’ thriller, the first in a five-book series, was so popular it received the movie treatment in 2012, with Jennifer Lawrence starring as Katniss opposite Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta. Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing more than two months after her Tucson, Ariz., abduction—and an active police detectiverecently called out explained why a new note and bitcoin demand could be real.

On the April 7 episode of Brian Entin Investigates, NewsNation Senior National Correspondent Brian Entin spoke with Brian Martin, an active detective with the Fort Wayne Police Department in Indiana, who specializes in cold cases.

On April 6, TMZ received new notes from a person who allegedly saw Nancy alive in Sonora, Mexico, but claimed that the 84-year-old “is dead” now. The letter was reportedly from the same person who sent ransom notes to the outlet in February. This time, however, the person demanded 1 Bitcoin—half before the information was shared and half after a public arrest—in exchange for information about the location of Nancy’s body.

"The person, whoever sent the letters, they want some attention. They want those letters to be found, or they wouldn't have sent them to a news outlet," Martin speculated. "That's somebody who wants to be heard."

He continued, "I would hope if it is the person involved in Ms. Guthrie's disappearance, that they want to be heard and are legitimately trying to negotiate some type of deal, or whatever it is they're looking to do. And not maybe somebody who has ulterior motives for attention that has nothing to do with the case. You get somebody like that, and it's going to take this case down a completely wrong path, away from Ms. Guthrie, away from trying to solve this case and finding her, if she's still alive."

When Entin asked whether the Guthrie family should just pay the half a Bitcoin, Martin pointed out a potential risk, suggesting that the person could turn around and ask for even more money without providing the information.

"Is this person gonna actually give legitimate information, or are they just trying to soak the family for money? And you hope that somebody's not doing that," he shared. "And a big concern with asking for half a Bitcoin, it's my understanding there's a considerable reward for information leading to the recovery of Miss Guthrie. So therefore, why would you not just submit a tip to a legitimate crime stoppers, or to the sheriff's department, or to the FBI, or to the tip line that's set up, and get the $100,000. So that makes it very suspect to me."

However, Martin speculated that one reason the note-writer went to TMZ instead of tip lines and other legitimate sources.

"Oftentimes, those individuals, they want the power," he pointed out. "It is almost [like] they're reliving the event. It allows them to have the power and feel the power over the community, over the Guthrie family, and over pretty much everybody. It makes them feel like they're in the driver's seat of the case."

Plus, as Entin and Martin later speculated, Nancy might have accidentally died while the perpetrators had her. Contacting the FBI, or the sheriff's department, or a tip line at that point would be risky, as they would face felony murder charges.

Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on the evening of Jan. 31. As of writing, no suspect has been named despite Savannah's $1 million reward offer.

Major Burger Franchisee With 65 Locations Files for Bankruptcy

A significant franchisee for a popular national fast food restaurant chain has filed for bankruptcy. A California-based franchise owner for 65 Carl's Jr. locations filed for bankruptcy on April 2, according to QSR.

Harshad Dharod, who is the founder of the company Friendly Franchisees Corporation, owns 65 Carl's Jr. restaurants in California.

Dharod owns several companies, and he is seeking "joint administration" of the group of companies. The group includes Third Star Investments, LLC, Sun Gir Incorporated, Harshad & Nasir, Incorporated, DFG Restaurants Incorporated, Senior Classic Leasing, LLC, and Second Star Holdings, LLC.

The About page on the Friendly Franchisees Corporation website shares that Dharod came to the U.S. from India as a teenager to pursue an education in medicine.

He began working in the kitchen at a Jack in the Box restaurant, and a few years later, he became a franchise owner. Five years after that, he had 19 different Jack in the Box locations.

Eventually, Dharod sold his Jack in the Box restaurants and purchased other brands. In 2006, an article on Dharod shared on the website Franchising.com noted that he first developed a portfolio of Papa John's pizza locations.

Dharod also pursued a significant deal to become a franchisee of dozens of Carl's Jr. locations. They have been located primarily in Northern and Southern California.

He said, "That was probably the biggest and the best move I made in my life—becoming a part of the Carl's Jr. system."

Now, over 20 years after starting his Carl's Jr. franchisee journey, Dharod has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to the website Restaurant Business.

The website received a statement from the franchisor stating they were aware of Dharod's filing. The company noted, "This situation is specific to this individual's financial and business circumstances."

Their statement continued, "This has no impact on the operations of any other Carl's Jr. locations and we remain committed to delivering quality experiences for our guests, while driving profitable, sustainable growth for our franchisees and the brand."

Restaurant Dive indicates that as of 2025, there were a total of 588 Carl's Jr. locations in California. The Carl's Jr. website indicates that nationwide, there are more than 1,100 locations across 14 states.

'Game of Thrones' Actor Michael Patrick Dead at 35

Michael Patrick, an Irish actor who appeared in HBO's Game of Thrones, died at the age of 35 after a three-year battle with Motor Neuron Disease.

"Last night, Mick sadly passed away in the Northern Ireland Hospice," Patrick's wife, Naomi, shared via Instagram on Wednesday, April 8. "He was admitted 10 days ago and was cared for by the incredible team there. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends."

Patrick was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disorder in February 2023.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Motor Neuron Disease "is a group of neurological disorders that gradually destroy your motor neurons. Your motor neurons are nerve cells that control muscle movement involved in activities like breathing, speaking, swallowing and walking."

"Words can’t describe how broken-hearted we are," Naomi continued. "It’s been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life. He lived a life as full as any human can live. Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger-haired man."

In addition to Game of Thrones, Patrick made a name for himself in Ireland, starring as Richard III one year after receiving his diagnosis.

Did Didi Conn and Olivia Newton-John Remain Friends?

Yes! On the first day on the Grease set, Newton-John was extremely nervous, but Conn used improvisation to help her relax.

“The first scene in the movie was her scene of walking onto the campus of Rydell with Frenchy, and she was nervous,” Conn told PEOPLE last year. “There we were so many, many, many times, she said how grateful she was that we had so much fun and that I just pulled her right into it."

In the decades after the film came out, Conn and Newton-John remained in close touch, with Conn calling Newton-John “just so sweet and beautiful.”

“I lived in Malibu on the bottom of Big Rock, and she lived on the top of Big Rock, so I'd see her a lot,” Conn shared of her friend, who died in 2022 from metastatic breast cancer. “I miss her.”

1973 Hit Track Ranked Among 'Greatest Songs of All Time' Cemented This Singer as a Sex Symbol

One of Marvin Gaye’s most iconic tracks, released in 1973, was born out of a period of writer’s block, with lyrics shaped to reflect love. The song went on to be hailed as one of the "greatest of all time," cementing the soul legend’s status as a cultural icon and sex symbol.

Following the release of his most commercially successful album in 1971, What's Going On, Gaye was suffering from writer's block in the Spring of 1972. At the time, he had also renegotiated a new contract with Motown Records and given more creative control over his music. As a result, he released his twelfth studio album that included what would become one of his signature tracks, "Let's Get It On." It was named by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest songs to be released of all time.

The track was released in late March of that year and co-written and produced by Ed Townsend. Townsend had originally developed the track with religious themes, with Gay and Kenneth Stove having reworked the lyrics to have a political focus. Instead, Townsend felt the song was about love and sex, with him collaborating with Gaye on new lyrics. The soul singer transformed the song into an emotional piece with funky guitar arrangements and backing vocals.

"Let's Get It On" was a success, having landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart for two weeks and topped the Billboard Soul Singles chart for eight weeks. The song's popularity had skyrockets Gayes further into fame and gave him a reputation as a sex symbol.

Rolling Stone calls the track an "ode to sexual bliss" and Gaye's having crafted a "masterpiece of erotic persuasion." While the soul singer had hoped the track didn't "advocate promiscuity," he admitted it does have "some aphrodisiac power." The hit track has been used in a wide array of pop culture projects, from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery to shows like Friends and The King of Queens.

It became one of Motown Records' biggest hits and sold millions of copies. Gaye was considered the "Prince of Motown" and "Prince of Soul," with What's Going On having been ranked in various lists as one of the greatest albums of all time.

According to reports, at the time the song and album were recorded, Gaye had become smitten with jazz guitarist Slim Gaillard's daughter, Janis Hunter. She was only 17-years-old at the time, with the singer having been in his mid 30s. A widely reported story claims she was in the studio when Gaye recorded the hit track and began dating within months. The two would later marry in 1977 and have two children.

“I noticed my light really dimming. I wasn’t putting off good vibes. I could see it in the mirror. I could look at the negative impact that that kind of grief and anger was having on me. And there was a weird switch where one day I just said, ‘I don’t want to carry this anymore. It’s impacting my relationships and how I feel about myself. I’ve got to let it go. I’ve got to forgive him,’" said Garth, who ultimately went to rehab and lives a sober life today.

When Is Jennie Garth’s Memoir Coming Out?

This past summer, Garth announced that she would be releasing her book, I Choose Me: Chasing Joy, Finding Purpose, and Embracing Reinvention, on April 14, 2026.

Described by PEOPLE as “part inspirational memoir, part motivational advice,” the book aims to empower “women to choose a path of health, healing, and happiness,” according to the publisher.

Stephen King Removed This Controversial Book From Print — Here’s Why

For the last five decades, horror author Stephen King has proven that he's not afraid to push boundaries. However, there's one book of his that he won't stand behind.

In a 2013 interview with journalist Anthony Mason, King said he made the decision to stop his 1977 book, Rage, from continuing to be published. He explained that he was concerned the novel's material would influence violence.

"It's not in print because it was a novel about a kid who goes to school one day and shoots his Algebra teacher and holds his class hostage with a gun. And he's got this whole backstory about his abusive father and a lot of teenage angst and a lot of problems," said King during the 2013 interview.

He explained that he wrote the book during his high school and college years and published it using his pen name Richard Bachman. According to King, Rage "didn't garner a lot of attention" and "was certainly never a bestseller." However, he stated that the book was a source of inspiration for two students who committed violence at their respective schools. He clarified that while he doesn't believe video games, "books or movies are ever the cause of this sort of violence," he didn't want one of his works to become "a part of a fantasy scenario" that could create great harm.

Stephen King Shared What Makes a Great Horror Novel

As one of the most recognizable and read horror novelists, King knows how to frighten his fans. In a 1999 interview onLate Night with Conan O'Brien, King shared his secret to a successful horror book. According to the acclaimed author, horror novels need to have two upsetting elements.

"That's what good horror is, it's kind of a peanut butter cup. You've got your chocolate. You've got your peanut butter. And they're both good. But when you add them together, you've got a whole new tasty treat," said King in the 1999 interview.

He then provided an example of a theoretical story with two scary elements.

"I'm really terrified of flying and I'm also terrified of rats. So I thought of this story called 'The Rats Are Loose on Flight 62,'" shared King.

1982 Forgotten Country Rock Song Topped the Charts 44 Years Ago

In 1982, The Oak Ridge Boys released a catchy song that blended country with rock and pop. The hit topped the Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart 44 years ago this week. It also reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 19 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. The song was called “Bobbie Sue.” It was the first single released from the band's album of the same name.

The hit country song was styled in the vein of a rock-and-roll novelty song with a saxophone solo during the musical bridges. It was the group's sixth song to reach the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Some other songs that made the list were “Touch a Hand, Make a Friend,” “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight,” “Make My Life With You,” and “Little Things.”

“Bobbie Sue” was co-written by Adele Tyler, Dan Tyler, and Wood Newton. In an interview with The Boot, Newton revealed how they came up with the lyrics. “Dan had a little boy at the time,” he said. “And one of the first words for a baby is ‘ba,’ like ‘bottle.’ So his son was saying ‘ba-ba,’ and it sparked this idea to write a song about ‘ba ba ba ba Bobbie Sue.’"

The Oak Ridge Boys were a quartet originally consisting of Wally Fowler, Lon "Deacon" Freeman, Curly Kinsey, and Johnny New. They were founded in 1943 and called themselves Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers. They eventually changed their name to The Oak Ridge Quartet before finally settling on The Oak Ridge Boys in the 1960s. Today, the members include Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban, and Ben James.

The band hit their peak of popularity in 1981 when they covered “Elvira,” which was originally recorded by Dallas Frazier. Duane Allen discussed their famous cover in a 2011 interview. "There’s not much we could do with 'Elvira' vocally," he said. "We wanted to protect the integrity of the song and not really change it that much. What we did want to do is take out the horns, which pretty well dated the song for the 80s."

The Oak Ridge Boys were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015. They announced they were retiring in 2024, but then set more tour dates for 2025. Allen revealed that they changed their minds after his bandmates told him, "We’ve all talked, and we want to keep working. We’re not through singing yet."

As the Goodreads list saw it, Susan Rowland's 2024 suspenseful novel Murder on Family Grounds takes the top spot of over 1,000 highly esteemed books from the thriller genre.

The third book in Rowland's Mary Wandwalker series, Murder on Family Grounds follows out-of-work 60-year-old Mary as she assists the murder investigation of the enigmatic Falconer family.

As the case unfolds and more and more wealthy Falconers find themselves being killed off, Mary also uncovers several major ties to her own personal life and past connections to the Falconer family.

With roughly 1,740 Goodreads users contributing to the list, it's something of a shock to see a comparatively recent novel top the list for the best thrillers of all time. For example, Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train, Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, Thomas Harris' Red Dragon and Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None appear further down on the list.

Rounding out the top 10 on the list are such fan-favorite books as Charlie Donlea's Twenty Years Later; Jason Rekulak's Hidden Pictures; R.D. Ronald's The Elephant Tree; Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Freida McFadden's Never Lie; Lisa Jewell's None of This Is True; Charlie Donlea's Those Empty Eyes; and Debra Webb's Deeper Than the Dead.

Michael J. Fox Death Rumors Send Internet Into a Meltdown

Michael J. Fox is alive and well despite an onslaught of rumors to the contrary. According to TMZ, the rumors started after CNN published an article with the title, "Remembering the life of actor Michael J. Fox." The article has since been taken down and CNN has issued an apology.

"The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family," a spokesperson for CNN told Parade.

Meanwhile, a rep for Fox told TMZ, "Michael is doing great. He was at PaleyFest yesterday. He was on stage and was giving interviews."

Some internet users saw CNN's post before it was removed, and many are relieved to head that Fox is alive and doing well.

Fox, 64, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease back in 1991 when he was just 29 years old. He kept the news about his health private for several years, eventually going public with his diagnosis in 1998. Although he's limited in mobility, Fox has managed to live with the disease for the past three decades—and he's even returned to work in some capacity after retiring from acting in 2020.

In May 2025, Deadline reported that Fox inked a deal to appear on Season 3 of Shrinking.

“The depth of character, the quality of relationships, the language—it’s just a beautiful show," Fox told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year. "And I thought, just do that for its own sake. I don’t have an agenda. Don’t have to be coming back into acting or anything. It’ll be fun. And there’s Harrison Ford, which is insane."

Nancy Guthrie Update: Former FBI Agent Predicts Break as Pressure Mounts

A former FBI agent believes a turning point may be approaching in the Nancy Guthrie case as mounting pressure continues to build on those involved in her disappearance. In a new interview with Page Six, Jason Pack pointed to the unique combination of intense media coverage—fueled in part by Savannah Guthrie’s return to national television—and a reward exceeding $1 million as factors that could ultimately lead to a crucial break in the case.

"Every day that passes the pressure builds. Keeping a secret like this is exhausting. … and that gets harder with every morning that Savannah Guthrie sits behind that anchor desk," Pack told the outlet.

"Most criminals in cases like this count on the media moving on," he continued. "They count on the family fading from public view. They count on people forgetting. This case is different. Savannah has a national platform and she shows up on it every single day. Every time a viewer sees her face, they think about her mother."

"Add a reward of more than one million dollars and the full weight of FBI resources and you have a situation where the walls are not just closing, but they are closing from every direction at once," Pack added.

He went on to say that someone may get up the "courage" to phone in a tip that ultimately solves the case. Pack isn't the only expert who feels this way, either. Former Orange County prosecutor Matt Murphy appeared on a recent episode of Prof Jo Explains where he said, "I think, eventually, they’re going to catch this guy. There’ll be answers. But it may take—I mean, I did cold cases that were 15, 20 years old sometimes—so, it’ll take a while. I think somebody’s gonna have to talk."

Nancy, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Authorities believe that she was kidnapped from her Arizona home in the middle of the night. Despite receiving thousands of leads, investigators have not been able to locate Nancy—or identify the person or persons responsible for her disappearance.

Plaza hasn't made any public comment about the pregnancy herself, but sources reveal she's expecting her first child with partner and actor Chris Abbott, 40, in the fall. And so now, of course, the celebrity curiosity and gawking has commenced.
