1972 No. 1 Hit Became a Career-Defining Classic

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 10:27pm

Gilbert O’ Sullivan made a mark in the music scene after releasing his song “Alone Again (Naturally).”

The generation today might know the song through trending social media videos, but the song truly defined its era.

At the height of classic rock and the rising popularity of funk and soul music in the early 1970s, the Irish singer-songwriter struck gold by introducing a soft pop-rock sound infused with a bossa nova-inspired rhythm.

Released in 1972, O’ Sullivan had only turned 21 years old when he launched “Alone Again (Naturally)” which sold over two million copies, establishing his career as one of the era’s hottest recording artists.

His success further skyrocketed after the song topped the Billboard Hot 100. O'Sullivan's track hit No. 1 in the same year and spent six weeks on the chart, marking his international breakthrough.

Moreover, it also landed as Billboard’s No. 2 song of 1972 behind "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack.

Adding to its remarkable achievements, “Alone Again (Naturally)” was ranked the fifth most popular song of the 1970s on Casey Kasem's American Top 40.

Fellow music artists were equally drawn to the captivating sound of O’ Sullivan’s song. Even the iconic musician Neil Diamond was so impressed that he recorded his own version of it as part of his 2010 album Dreams.

He described it as a “happy rhythm that you almost didn’t pay attention to the words,” as mentioned by The Great Irish Songbook, adding how amazed he was at how “a relative kid could write such a powerful lyric.”

According to O’Sullivan, they recorded the smash hit in a “three-hour session with his single ‘Out of the Question.’”

“Nobody thought that it was the one with commercial potential; everyone thought ‘Out of the Question’ would be the success.”

Lo and behold, the song became a cultural touchstone that captured the bittersweet emotions of loneliness, death and losing faith.

Apart from it, the Irish singer is also known for his notable hits such as "Clair,” “Get Down,” his debut song “Nothing Rhymed,” “Why Oh Why Oh Why,” the 1971 song "No Matter How I Try," as well as the pop song “Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day."

Lainey Wilson Sparkles on the 'Hannah Montana 20th' Purple Carpet

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 10:13pm

Country singer and songwriter Lainey Wilson stepped out on the purple carpet in head-to-toe sparkles on Monday, March 23, 2026. The Yellowstone actress looked striking at the premiere of the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special.

Wilson ditched her typical cowboy hat for the evening and wore a stunning sheer and sequin Zuhair Murad jumpsuit with daringly long sleeves—and don't miss the gorgeous open-back cutout.

In the past, the Grammy-winning songstress has talked about her longtime personal connection to the Hannah Montana character (who was, of course, played by Miley Cyrus throughout its run). As a teenager, Wilson impersonated Hannah Montana for kids' birthday parties, and she kept the gig going on weekends for five years. She would actually open her Hannah shows as herself (good practice for future stardom) and then threw on the famed blonde wig to perform as the Disney show superstar.

Listen to Lainey Wilson as she gets nostalgic about her own Hannah Montana journey and talks about how much she looks up to singer Miley Cyrus, too:

Emerging Author’s Novel Ranked as No. 1 ‘Breakout Debut’ on Goodreads

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 10:08pm

Emerging author Caro Claire Burke is poised to make a major splash with her debut novel.

Her upcoming book, Yesteryear, has been ranked the No. 1 "breakout debut" on Goodreads among titles publishing in the U.S. between March and May. According to Goodreads, the list is based on how many readers have added each book to their "want-to-read" shelves, making it a strong indicator of early buzz and anticipation.

View this post on Instagram

Yesteryear centers on Natalie Heller Mills, a seemingly perfect wife, mother and influencer who has built a massive following by promoting a curated, traditional lifestyle. To her millions of followers, she represents an idealized version of domestic life, complete with a picturesque farmhouse, a charming husband and six children. But, behind the scenes, her carefully constructed world is far more manufactured than it appears.

Everything changes when Natalie suddenly wakes up in a version of her life that feels eerily familiar but completely altered. Gone are the modern comforts she once relied on. Instead, she finds herself living in what appears to be 1805, where daily survival requires physical labor, and the polished life she once performed has been replaced by something raw, difficult and unsettlingly real.

As Natalie struggles to understand what's happening, she's forced to confront a series of terrifying possibilities. Is she trapped in an elaborate hoax? A twisted reality show? Or something far more sinister? As the conditions around her grow harsher and the stakes more dangerous she realizes that escaping this new reality may be her only chance at survival.

Blending sharp social commentary with psychological tension, Yesteryear explores themes of identity, performance, faith and the pressures of modern womanhood. With its dark humor and high-concept premise, the novel is already drawing attention as one of the most intriguing debuts of the season. The novel is also being adapted into a film, which will star Anne Hathaway.

With its No. 1 ranking on Goodreads' breakout list, Yesteryear is quickly shaping up to be one of the most talked-about new releases and a debut readers won’t want to miss. Yesteryear is expected to hit shelves April 7, 2026.

Dollar Tree's Sweet $1.50 Pitchers Add a Dash of Sunshine With Every Pour

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 10:05pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

I have such vivid childhood memories of those first warm spring and summer days when you'd just go outside and stay out there for hours. Front yard, backyard, driveway—it didn't matter. You'd bounce between games, get a little sun-kissed (okay, maybe a little too sun-kissed), and only come in when someone called your name or you needed a drink.

And there was alwaysa plastic pitcher waiting like clockwork. At my house it was usually filled with Country Time lemonade or Kool-Aid. That bright, sugary, ice-cold goodness somehow tasted even better after running around all day. I swear, nothing hits quite like that first sip when you're overheated and a little out of breath.

Pitcher With Lid - Assorted Colors, $1.50 at Dollar Tree Dollar Tree pitchers with lid

Dollar Tree

Shop It!

All of those memories came flooding back the second I spotted these adorable new beverage pitchers at Dollar Tree. They've got the cutest warm-weather motifs, and it instantly gave me that same nostalgic, carefree feeling. Like, suddenly I want to mix up a big batch of something sweet, sit outside, and pretend I don’t have a single responsibility for at least an hour (or more).

There are three different colorways to choose from—red with a watermelon print, blue with a citrus vibe, and green with a beachy theme.

I always feel like it's super important to point out when something isn't dishwasher-safe, just in case you're totally averse to hand washing dishes (I totally get it). Neither the pitcher or its lid can go into your dishwasher, but at $1.50, it still feels like a great buy. When you look at the Dollar Tree website you'll see that if you order online you have to buy a case of 24, which totals $36. So try to find these cuties in your local store to avoid buying in bulk.

Dollar Tree has lots of fun drinkware right now, like these cabana stripe tumblers that look an awful lot like Stanley 1913 cups. It also has seriously teeny tiny Stanley dupes that are too adorable for words. But if you're looking for pretty storage solutions, you've also come to the right place. Dollar Tree's chic coastal baskets are a steal, as are its iridescent lidded jars that are great for corralling smaller items.

‘The Voice’ Season 29: Who Went Home and Who Made It Through the Battles Tonight? (Night 2)

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 10:00pm

The Battles continued tonight for Season 29 of The Voice: Battle of Champions with coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and John Legend deciding which of their paired teammates will make it through to the Knockouts and which one would go home.

The twist this season is that there are no Saves — with one exception — but each coach will have one Steal. On night one, Kelly used her “Super Steal” to save her teammate, Liv Ciara, the only Save possible for the season, and John used his Steal to take Moses G from Team Adam. That meant only Adam had a Steal available, and he used to take Mike Steele from Team Legend.

This season’s celebrity advisors are Jennifer Hudson for Team Kelly, Benji Maddenof Good Charlotte is tutoring Team Adam, and Muni Long is guiding Team Legend. Kelly had to miss the rehearsals for her team’s Battles due to the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, so Jennifer served as both coach and advisor.

I can’t wait to get into it with Jared. I think we have a lot in common, believe it or not and I think that’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Song: “Either Way” by Chris Stapleton

Winner: Houston Kelly

Kelly said: “This was by far my hardest decision. Both of them are incredible singers, but Houston showed me in the Battles that he has even more in his arsenal that I did not know about. Houston may have some more shoes thrown at him, y’all.”

Battle Round 3: Aziz Guerra vs Jeremy Keith (3-Chair Turn) from Team Adam

Winner: Jeremy Keith

Adam said: “Jeremy is no longer a background singer. He’s coming into the foreground. I am really proud of him because he’s doing all the things. Jeremy’s voice has presence. Jeremy was so good and so on the money, he deserved to advance.”

Battle Round 7: Abigaile Oakley (Three-Chair Turn) vs Julia Golden from Team Kelly

Song: “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac

Winner: Abigaile Oakley

Kelly said: “Abigaile and Julia are both talented, but Abigaile is a true storyteller. The thing that won me over about her is she has this intensity that is purposeful yet intimate. It has way of being soft but very pointed. I have six incredible artists coming into the Knockouts, so my team crushed it.”

Battle Round 8: KJ Willis vs Mike Steele (Three-Chair Turn) from Team Legend

Song: “Let Me Love You” by Mario

Winner: KJ Willis

John said: “KJ and Mike made me so proud. I chose KJ because he’s a real singer. He has so much range and flexibility in his voice. I really enjoy his tone. It reminds me of some the singers I grew up listening to. I am excited to see what he will do next.”

Steal: Mike Steele

Adam said: “I really did think he was going to pick you. When he didn’t I was so shook. I was, ‘That means I can have him on my team.’ I was so surprised. There’s a tone in your voice that I love. Welcome to my team. Mike adds a facet that I definitely do not have, which is a really strong vocalist in the R&B vein.”

Oscar Winner Says She 'Felt Shame' While Secretly Battling Fibroids: 'I Was Hiding in Plain Sight'

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 9:54pm

Lupita Nyong'o is breaking her silence, and she wants every woman who's been quietly suffering to know she sees them.

Ahead of her appearance on ABC News Live Prime on Monday, March 23, the 43-year-old actress sat down with anchor Linsey Davis to open up about years of hiding an increasingly severe uterine fibroid diagnosis while still showing up on red carpets and film sets like everything was fine.

"It looked like shame," Nyong'o told Davis. "In the beginning I thought, what did I do wrong? What didn't I do? How did I not protect my body? How did I not serve my body that it has betrayed me in this way? I was hiding in plain sight."

The A Quiet Place: Day One star said she kept working through symptoms that would have stopped most people cold. "In my private moments, I was dealing with heavy periods and severe clotting," she said. "At one point, I had a period for over 30 days. I was pre-anemic and experiencing fatigue." All while putting on a brave face for the world, and saying nothing.

'We Are Conditioned to Expect Pain'

Rather than blame individual women for staying quiet, Nyong'o pointed to something systemic; a cultural conditioning that starts in adolescence and quietly teaches girls to endure.

"As women, we are conditioned from when we're in our adolescent years to expect pain, to expect discomfort," she said. "And we're not taught how to observe our bodies."

Earlier this month, Nyong'o revealed she has had 77 uterine fibroids — 25 of which were surgically removed, with more than 50 still growing inside her, the largest the size of an orange. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths on the uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, severe pelvic pain, long periods, chronic fatigue and back and leg pain.

The Make Fibroids Count Campaign

Nyong'o is channeling her experience into action. She launched the Make Fibroids Count campaign with the Foundation for Women's Health, focused on raising awareness of the condition and funding research into minimally invasive treatment options, an area long underfunded relative to the number of women it affects.

Davis, who previously shared her own years-long struggle with fibroids on air, anchored the conversation — giving the exchange a particular weight. She joins a number of public figures who've chosen to speak openly about their health, from Kate Middleton, who shared her cancer diagnosis in a message that resonated with millions, to countless others who found that speaking out was the first step toward healing.

The full interview airs tonight at 7 p.m. ET on ABC News Live Prime, with streaming on Disney+, Hulu, the ABC News app and more.

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 9:40pm

This week, the 13 remaining chefs on Top Chef: Carolinas welcomed the legendary Emeril Lagasse as a guest judge and included a rather tricky Elimination Challenge that involved using natural food dyes. It flummoxed nearly every cheftestant.

Spoiler alert: The post below discusses the elimination and the challenges from the Monday, March 23 episode of Top Chefseason 23. Don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled.

What Were the Challenges on 'Top Chef' Season 23 Episode 3?

The Quickfire Challenge tasked the chefs with preparing dishes that all revolved around livermush (yes, that's its real name). It is Southern food that is especially popular in the Carolinas made of pork liver and other scrap pieces of meat, cornmeal and spices, then formed into a loaf and sliced. The winning dish was the one that most successfully elevated the humble livermush.

The $10000 prize went to Chef Anthony for his livermush pate with tomatoes, cayenne chilies and livermush croutons.

The Elimination Challenge focused on highlighting North Carolina's history of textile manufacturing by making each chef have at least two elements in their dish that were naturally dyed with food dyes like carrot powder, hibiscus, pea flower, etc.

Meanwhile, Chef Jennifer Lee had to go to urgent care to get her shoulder looked at; she had injured it prior to the show and it was flaring up. She missed the Quickfire Challenge but was able to compete in the Elimination Challenge, though her arm was in a sling, which made things very difficult.

The top dishes were from:

  • Anthony, who prepared mole negro, mole rojo and mole verde with chicken, colored with activated charcoal, beets and chlorophyll.
  • Brandon, who made deconstructed lasagna with Bolognese, marbled pasta and whipped ricotta, colored with activated charcoal and saffron.
  • Laurence, who made a bao flight of two savory and one sweet bao buns, colored with chlorophyll, turmeric, curry powder and dehydrated strawberries.

Chef Laurence was declared the winner, so he will have immunity next week.

The bottom dishes were from… everyone else. Yikes. In the end, Chef Nana was sent home for not completing the challenge and serving an incomplete dish, but she will get to try to battle back in Last Chance Kitchen. That will start next week once they have two chefs to face off with each other.

Top Chef airs Monday nights from 9:30 to 10:45 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo. All season 23 episodes will be supersized to 75 minutes.

1976 No. 1 Hit Became a Timeless Classic

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 9:35pm

In 1976, Elton John teamed up with Kiki Dee to release a song that would become one of the most recognizable duets in pop history.

Their single, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," quickly became a global sensation, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts in the UK. The track marked Elton John's first time hitting No. 1 in both countries simultaneously, a major milestone during an already dominant era in his career.

Written by John and longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin under the playful pseudonyms Ann Orson and Carte Blanche, the song was intentionally crafted as a throwback to the classic Motown duets of the 1960s. With its call-and-response structure, bright piano melody and infectious chorus, it captured a sense of fun that stood out on the radio at the time.

"I was in Barbados one evening in 1976 when Elton called from Toronto to play me a backing track he'd just cut with the band," recalled Taupin in his memoir, Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton, and Me.

"Half cut myself by this point, the afternoon's poolside cocktails having muddied my brainwaves, I listened and took note," Taupin continued. "Elton was in need of a lyric that could be done as a duet. I told him I would give it a shot, hung up, and stuck my head in the ice bucket. In 10 minutes, I'd thrown something together that was simplistic without being overly trite, and that is how 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' came about."

Kiki Dee's role in the song was just as important. As the first British female artist signed to John's Rocket Records, she had already built a successful career, but this duet introduced her to an even wider global audience. Her chemistry with John gave the track its playful charm, making it feel like a genuine musical conversation between two performers.

"I remember getting a copy of it with Elton singing his vocal," Dee said in an interview. "And also doing my part in a high voice! I worked hard on my parts. Elton had already stamped the song with his vocal, which in a way is quite good, 'cos it gives you a groundwork on how you're gonna sing it. The precedent has already been set by him, and the writing and production of the song. I seem to remember working quite hard to get the right attitude. Good vocals are always hard work."

The song's success was immediate and far-reaching. It became a staple on radio and television, and its colorful, tongue-in-cheek music video, which featured exaggerated costumes and a retro aesthetic, only added to its appeal. At a time when pop music was shifting in multiple directions, "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart" offered something simple and joyful, helping it connect with a broad audience.

Over the years, the track has remained a fan favorite and a defining moment in both artists' careers. It has been covered and reinterpreted multiple times, most notably by John himself in later collaborations, further cementing its place in pop culture.

Nearly five decades later, "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart" continues to endure as one of the most iconic duets ever recorded and a timeless reminder of the power of great chemistry, catchy songwriting and pure pop fun.

Beloved '90s Singer Sends Public Message to Late Chuck Norris

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 9:33pm

Country music legend Randy Travis has shared a touching tribute to his longtime friend Chuck Norris, following the action star’s death on March 19 at the age of 86.

The heartfelt message, posted on Instagram, highlights the bond formed between two icons of the 1990s entertainment scene.

Travis, whose smooth baritone voice defined classic country hits such as “Forever and Ever, Amen” and “Three Wooden Crosses,” reminisced about the moments he shared with Norris both on and off the set.

A photo accompanying the post shows the two riding horses, while a short video clip captures their iconic action scene from the 1993 made-for-television film Wind in the Wire.

Randy Travis and Chuck Norris pictured together.

“The gentle strength in Chuck Norris is simply the heart of America. The memories, the movies, the martial arts, the workouts, the laughs we shared will always be amongst my most cherished. Chuck made a habit of finding the best in folks,” Travis wrote.

He continued, reflecting on the wisdom imparted to him by Norris:

View this post on Instagram

“He once told me, ‘life isn’t easy, but it is fair… we get to choose who and what we want to become, regardless of where we start.’ That stuck with me—though heaven is home now, Chuck’s spirit will remain a source of strength and solace in all of us on earth, forever and ever. Rest well, my friend, and I’ll see you ‘round the bend.’”

Travis and Norris first crossed paths on the set of Wind in the Wire, a film blending comedy, action and Western drama. Travis played a country singer turned cowboy, while Norris made a memorable cameo that included a short but exciting fight scene.

Behind the scenes, their friendship grew during sparring sessions, one memorable moment involved Travis accidentally putting Norris in a headlock, only to be quickly reversed in a demonstration of Norris’ martial arts mastery.

Their connection extended beyond that single film. In 1996, the pair shared the stage on On the Record with Ralph Emery, discussing their respective careers and mutual admiration. Norris even once hoped to have Travis perform the theme song for Walker, Texas Ranger, though CBS insisted he do it himself.

“Chuck was a brother figure, and our time together was full of lessons, laughs and life advice,” Travis said.

Chuck Norris’ death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans, friends, and family alike. Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris rose from a shy boy in the Midwest to a martial arts champion and Hollywood icon.

He competed in and won multiple Professional Middleweight Karate titles, retiring undefeated in 1969, before launching a celebrated acting career encouraged by Bruce Lee.

Norris starred in over 30 films and numerous television shows, including the enduring Walker, Texas Ranger series. Beyond martial arts and entertainment, Norris was known for his philanthropy, strong faith and devotion to family.

His children, including twins Dakota and Danilee Norris, shared heartfelt tributes on Instagram, recalling their father as a loving and protective figure whose generosity and courage shaped their lives.

As America continues to mourn Chuck Norris, Randy Travis’ heartfelt words remind the world of the quiet strength behind the stunts, films and legendary roundhouse kicks, a strength rooted in friendship and integrity.

Trader Joe’s Cashiers Are Judging You For These Rookie Moves

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 9:32pm

If you're in a pinch, sometimes you have to cave and purchase the paper bags Trader Joe's carries at checkout.

But the rest of us will take pride in bringing our totes and reusable bags to our neighborhood location to save some change — and maybe even help the environment.

That is — until you find the Trader Joe's cashier giving you the side-eye as they glance inside the carriers you've supplied them.

Not ringing a bell? Well, if it hasn't happened to you, thank goodness. That probably means the insides of your bags aren't caked with crumbs, stuffed with old receipts, or worse — crawling with ants.

Nick Lachance/Toronto Star via Getty Images

But if they are, and you haven't received any grief from any Trader Joe's employees, maybe they've secretly taken their customer grief to online forums instead. Yes, the Reddit threads exist, Foodie.com reports.

"Probably the wildest thing that's ever happened to me is when I was bagging for a customer with her own reusable bag and when I opened it there was a feminine napkin stuck to the inside," one Redditor claimed on a "Trader Joe's crew" thread, with another person replying, "Also the bags that smell like cat piss, s--t, and mold. Bags that HAVE legit mold in them. Ma’am, how do you not SEE OR SMELL that black mold?!?!"

Bottom line: For your sake and others', maybe give your sacks a once-over before cruising into your neighborhood TJ's the next time you need a "Two Buck Chuck," frozen delicacy or any other essential the popular grocer carries.

Speaking of, there’s a new frozen find that Trader Joe's shoppers can’t stop talking about. Fans are flooding social media with reactions, calling it dangerously good, surprisingly better than expected and, in some cases, worthy of an immediate freezer restock.

Instagram user @traderjoesobsessed recently alerted fans to the new Trader Joe’s Cookie Dough Ice Cream Bites, a frozen treat that combines two classic indulgences into one seriously snackable dessert. Each bite features creamy vanilla ice cream wrapped in a layer of chocolate chip cookie dough.

Travis Kelce Turns Heads Over Taylor Swift Move

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 9:04pm

Taylor Swift could really make fiancé Travis Kelce’s head turn as the NFL star visited Arrowhead Stadium.

On Monday, the veteran tight end put retirement rumors to rest by signing a three-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 36-year-old player inked a whopping $54.7m contract extension, securing his place in the league as he enters his 14th NFL season.

"Chiefs Kingdom, let's go baby! It's official! Excited for 2026 and just excited to put on a Chiefs uniform in front of you guys again. Let's get Arrowhead rocking, baby," the three-time Super Bowl champion said in a clip posted by the Chiefs on their official Instagram.

Amid the celebration, Kelce made a subtle but charming gesture when he spotted a familiar face in the hallway.

The video featured the NFL star walking down the hallway when he spotted a photo of Swift on the wall.

At that moment, his playful side took over and he casually waved at the pop star, acknowledging her presence as he passed by.

The photo featured the award-winning singer’s concert at Arrowhead Stadium for the two-night show of her Eras Tour in July 2023.

Kelce’s quiet nod towards the “Bad Blood” hitmaker didn't go unnoticed as fans immediately reacted with excitement.

“Travis lowkey proud though,” one wrote.

Fans are swooning over his charming move, with a commenter saying, “I'm convinced there are no other men like him, at least not available to the general public.”

“I’ll say it, his husband of him,” another added.

A fan remarked, “That's one of the best pictures of Tay, too, oh my god!!”

"I am not a swiftie but I do really like them as a couple," another added.

Apart from Kelce’s contract extension, he is also preparing for a major milestone set for this year.

Following the headline-making engagement the couple announced last year, the pair are reportedly gearing up for their big day set in the second quarter.

The Kelce-Swift wedding will take place on June 13 at a posh Rhode Island venue, as mentioned by Page Six.

As for the wedding guests, a source told Daily Mail that they "finalized several key decisions” but wanted to keep the list to “close friends and family.”

This also includes close friend Selena Gomez, Zoë Kravitz, Ashley Avignone, Abigail Anderson and the Haim sisters.

Adding to the wedding guest list is Kelce’s teammate Patrick Mahomes  and his wife Brittany Mahomes

Who went home on American Idol tonight? No one!

The results of tonight’s voting will be revealed on March 30 when American Idol goes live from Hollywood.

Here’s how the night broke down:

PHILMON LEE

Song: “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey

Keke said: “I was very nervous for you for a second, but when I saw you take that mic off that stand and you started walking with a little swag to your step, the vocals were hitting every note they needed to hit. I’m so proud of you.”

RAE

Song: “Respect” by Aretha Franklin

Keke said: “Someone needs to ring the fire alarm because you just set the show on fire. I’m not playing. You were singing down, I even heard a little personality talking throughout, you even hit that move at the end. The performance was fabulous top to bottom. You gave us stage presence, you gave us the outfit, and Mary J. Blige.”

LUCAS LEON

Song: “Just to See You Smile” by Tim McGraw

Carrie said: “Your voice is powerful, it is special and there’s something about the simplicity. You don’t try to over sing. You are laid back in the pocket. It is so easy to listen to you and watch you. I loved it.”

JORDAN McCULLOUGH (IDOL PLATINUM TICKET)

Song: “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2

Lionel said: “I think Jordan has used up all the notes possible in the music business. First of all, to take a U2 song and turn it into a spiritual, that’s a feat. And on top of that, to turn a U2 song into your song is the way you win competitions.”

ABAYOMI

Song: “Mama Knows Best” by Jessie J

Luke said: “So many star qualities. You don’t operate like you’re a 16-year-old and don’t start any time soon. Just be confident in what you are because you have every right to be. That was a great performance from top to bottom. A little scat in there.”

MADISON MOON

Song: “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson

Carrie said: “Earlier today, I was in my room and I could hear this song being played but I couldn’t see anything, so I didn’t really know, but I said, ‘I bet that’s Madison.’ Because I felt like she’s the only one who could go for this and pull it off, and you did. I love your voice so much. You’ve got these incredible pipes. That’s a tall-order song. Nobody wants to sing this song because it’s really hard and you tackled it, girl.”

CHRIS TUNGSETH

Song: “Apologize” by OneRepublic

Lionel said: “So let me just tell you, the first verse, you were concentrating so hard, you almost blew up. You were just in every note, thinking about it, I’ve got to make it perfect. Second verse, you joined us. From that point on, you let go and you delivered the goods. Enjoy that stage. You’ve got the goods.”

RUBY RAE

Song: “Drag Me Down” by One Direction

Carrie said: “You are such a ray of sunshine. You’ve always got this gazillion-watt smile. You can’t help but smile watching you. I want to challenge you a little bit to find your sassy side. When you’re singing ‘Drag Me Down,’ add a little sass in there. I just want to challenge you to find that side of yourself. Bring it.”

JULIÁN KALEL

Song: “Tourniquet” by Zack Bryan

Keke said: “I haven’t been a part of your journey like these guys, but I agree. I feel like I’ve been watching you in the light of this, I can see how much it means to you and that it’s so true to you. Your voice is beautiful. I can listen to you go on and on. You’re talking about ‘Tourniquet,’ this is a deep and intense song, but you’re delivering that hope when you look up during the performance and flash us that smile. It does feel hopeful.”

KEYLA RICHARDSON

Song: “With a Little Help From My Friends” by The Beatles

Luke said: “Do you remember when I gave you a couple of singing lessons in the audition? Why did you let me do that to you? You were just being kind to me. Thank you for that but I hereby relinquish my vocal lessons to you. I don’t need to say nothing to you. When you get us this excited, what is so special is you ain’t thinking about it. It don’t matter if you’re in Hawaii. It don’t matter if you’re in Pensacola. You’re just here to let what God gave you come out.”

American Idol airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Streams next day on Hulu.

1975 Career-Defining Classic Was a No. 1 Hit Song 51 Years Ago Today

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 8:42pm

In 1975, Dolly Parton delivered one of the most memorable songs of her early solo career.

Her single, "The Bargain Store," became a major success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and further cementing Parton's rise as a leading voice in country music.

Written by Parton herself, the song stands out for its clever metaphor, comparing a wounded heart to a shop full of discounted goods. With lyrics that balance vulnerability and strength, "The Bargain Store" showcased her ability to turn deeply personal emotions into universally relatable storytelling. Yet plenty of listeners didn't catch the underlying meaning and misinterpreted the song, believing she was singing about prostitution. Country radio stations thought the song was too indecent and even refused to play it.

"When I wrote 'The Bargain Store,' I swear on my life that I was never thinking about love in any vulgar way," Parton shared in her 2020 book Songteller. "I was using the 'bargain' as it related to a broken relationship. But every man I know thinks it's dirty. Somehow, this lyric is a dirty thing to a man. But I never saw it that way."

"All I was thinking of was the heart," Parton explained. "I was saying that you’ll be surprised at how good this broken heart is. Just take it. You'll never be sorry that you did,” she explained. "The words just meant that I've had relationships. I've been through stuff, I'm not new to this."

The track was featured on her album The Bargain Store, released during a pivotal moment in her career as she stepped out on her own following her professional partnership with Porter Wagoner. The pair had worked together throughout much of Parton's early career. She appeared on The Porter Wagoner Show for the first time in 1967, and the pair's duets and on-screen chemistry quickly made her a fan-favorite.

Ultimately Parton decided to pursue a solo career, and though it was a difficult decision, time has proven it was the right call. She penned the now iconic song, "I Will Always Love You," as a goodbye to Wagoner long before she could have ever imagined what huge hit it would become.

At the time, Parton was establishing herself not just as a performer, but as a songwriter with a distinct voice. Songs like "The Bargain Store" helped define her early success, paving the way for a string of future hits and solidifying her place in country music history.

More than five decades later, "The Bargain Store" remains a fan favorite and a testament to Dolly Parton's gift for storytelling, which is proof that even the most tender heartbreak can be transformed into something timeless.

Xbox Just Gave 'Like a Dragon' Fans a Very Good Reason to Watch TV This Thursday

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 8:41pm

Xbox is about to have a very good Thursday, and it wants you along for the ride.

The gaming giant confirmed today that its next Partner Preview showcase streams Thursday, March 26 at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on YouTube and Twitch, promising new game reveals, world premieres and a fresh round of Xbox Game Pass announcements. It's shaping up to be one of the more stacked standalone showcases of the year, and the confirmed lineup is already doing a lot of heavy lifting before the event even begins.

The Games Already Confirmed

Leading the charge is Stranger Than Heaven, the highly anticipated next project from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the beloved Like a Dragon and Yakuza franchises. Thursday's showcase will offer the most in-depth look yet at the title, and fans of the studio have been waiting on every scrap of new information since it was first teased.

Also on the docket: a major update on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, GSC Game World's acclaimed post-apocalyptic open-world shooter. Owlcat Games will show off The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, an action-RPG set in the universe created by author James S.A. Corey, and if the source material is any indication, there's no shortage of story to explore.

Then there's the one with the widest reach: Minecraft Dungeons II is officially coming to Xbox Game Pass Day One this fall, which means subscribers won't spend an extra dollar to play it at launch. For anyone who poured hours into the original dungeon-crawler, that's a pretty great deal.

World Premieres and More

Beyond the named titles, Xbox is promising reveals for games that haven't been publicly announced at all; pure surprises, essentially. Developer partners Sega and Owlcat Games are both featured, and Xbox Wire will publish additional behind-the-scenes stories during and after the event.

The stream will be accessible with live subtitles in 30+ languages, plus ASL and BSL versions running simultaneously on dedicated Twitch channels, a detail worth flagging for viewers who need those options.

The Xbox Partner Preview streams Thursday, March 26 at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on YouTube.com/Xbox and Twitch.tv/Xbox.

9 Phrases Parents Should Never Say About Their Adult Child’s Partner, According to a Psychologist

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 8:41pm

Let’s face it: The dynamics between a parent and their adult child can be tough, new and confusing. As the parent, you may have to learn how to set boundaries with your adult child (spoiler alert: it looks different than it does with a young child). You might not be aware of the phrases that can transform your relationship with your adult child. You might wonder how to stay close to your adult child without being overbearing, or wonder how to manage the relationship when they live at home. Those are all valid questions that many parents have had before you, and that many parents will have after you.

Further, confusing dynamics and questions about parenting an adult child extend beyond the child themselves. For example, at some point, you may have to interact with their partner and, again, those interactions will look different from those you had with your child’s high school boyfriend or girlfriend.

To help you understand what not to say about your adult child's partner (and why)—plus the effects of those statements, and what to do if you don’t like the person your child is with—a psychologist shares insights. Prepare yourself to feel a little less anxious about the in-law situation after reading.

Are There Different Things a Parent Can Say to Their Child About Who They're Dating vs. Who They're Married To?

Dating and marriage are both similar and also vastly different. How does that play into what a parent “should” or “shouldn’t” say about the partner?

In short, you can say more about a date than a spouse, but still do so with caution.

“If your child is dating, you might have slightly more room for curiosity, and concerns can be voiced with openness,” says Dr. Crystal Saidi, PsyD, a licensed psychologist with Thriveworks in Irvine, CA. “However, if they are married, that partner is now family, and undermining their spouse can damage the relationship with your child.”

9 Phrases Parents Should Never Say About Their Adult Child’s Partner, a Psychologist Warns

Motortion/Getty Images

Dr. Saidi shares nine common phrases she advises avoiding when talking about your adult child’s partner, regardless of whether they're married or not.

1. “I just don’t like them”

While blunt and honest, phrases like this can be damaging and force your child into a loyalty bind.

“It can create defensiveness instead of openness, and shut down communication,” Dr. Saidi says.

Perhaps more helpful, share a concern you have in a loving, nonjudgmental way.

2. “You can do better”

While you might view a phrase like this as a compliment, it actually “hits deeper than many parents realize,” according to Dr. Saidi. To the adult child, it comes across as criticism, as “you have poor judgment.”

Related: 7 ‘Old School’ Parenting Phrases Boomers Still Use That Can Come Across as Dismissive

3. “They changed you”

While you may notice a change, it may also be best to keep it to yourself.

“This is harmful because it implies the partner is corrupting them and diminishes natural growth,” Dr. Saidi explains.

After all, change isn’t always a bad or even a moral thing.

4. “You were happier before”

Again, while well-intentioned, Dr. Saidi believes this phrase can cause an adult child to question their feelings and second-guess their experiences. It also “subtly positions you as the authority on their feelings and happiness,” she adds.

5. “They are not right for our family”

Close-mindedness can also be damaging.

“This can create an ‘us versus them’ dynamic, and it signals conditional acceptance and social rejection,” Dr. Saidi states.

It can directly hurt you as a parent, too.

“In a marriage, this can backfire because when you reject the spouse, it often moves the child closer to them and further from you,” she adds.

6. “When are you going to leave them?”

This question is a boundary violation, Dr. Saidi says, unless there is abuse, addiction or clear danger (And even in those situations, the wording would need to be changed).

“It undermines the relationship, invites secrecy and damages trust,” she explains.

7. “I saw this coming”

This phrase gives the same vibes as “I knew I was right” or “I told you so,” said after an argument or conflict. While it may feel good to say, it doesn’t feel good to the other person, and it doesn’t benefit the relationship.

"It communicates, ‘I was right, and you were wrong,’ when the child just needs compassion,” Dr. Saidi states.

8. Criticisms of appearance, background or career

Making a snide comment about your adult child’s partner’s job, disrespecting a part of their history or being rude about their appearance are all obvious no-gos, too—even if you think you have good intentions.

“These types of comments or criticisms create shame, reinforce hierarchy and damage long-term family interactions,” Dr. Saidi says. “Remember, respect goes a long way.”

9. “You always choose the wrong people”

This phrase attacks the adult child’s identity, which can obviously be hurtful.

“It can create doubt, defensiveness and emotional distance from you,” Dr. Saidi says.

What Are the Long-Term Effects of Saying Harmful Things About Your Adult Child’s Partner?

The phrases above are hurtful not only in the moment, but they last long after the comment is made. Additionally, the ramifications can harm both your child and your relationship with them in various ways.

“Repeated criticism of their spouse can cause emotional cutoff, reduced family visits, limited access to grandchildren, secrets instead of being open and permanent strain between in-laws,” Dr. Saidi explains. “Your child may feel like they must choose, and they usually choose their spouse.”

What To Do if You Don’t Like Your Adult Child’s Partner

You may be able to stop yourself from saying those earlier phrases, but still feel that they're true. How can you honor your feelings and concerns without hurting your adult child and their partner?

Dr. Saidi first encourages you to ask yourself if it’s about safety or preference, values or control, or a fear of losing closeness.

“Then, it is important to voice any concerns you have privately, gently and specifically,” she continues. “If there are actual red flags (such as abuse, addiction, etc.), approach privately and carefully, and prioritize safety versus criticism.”

11 Popular Food Chains From the '80s We Wish Would Come Back Now

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 8:40pm

The 1980s were a golden era for casual dining, fast food and family restaurants. From roadside chains to local favorites, these eateries weren't just places to grab a meal—they were social hubs, birthday destinations and stops on family road trips that created lasting memories.

Many of the chains that thrived during this decade offered unique menus, playful atmospheres, and experiences that today's dining scene rarely replicates. For fans who grew up in the '80s, these restaurants hold a special place in their hearts, representing comfort, fun and nostalgia all on a plate.

While some of these chains managed to evolve or survive in smaller numbers, many iconic names vanished as consumer tastes shifted, competition increased, and corporate struggles took their toll. From classic burger joints to family-style steakhouses and whimsical ice cream stops, each closure left fans longing for the flavors, experiences and memories that modern dining can't fully replace.

Here's a look back at 11 beloved chains from the '80s that fans wish would make a comeback, celebrating what made them special and why they disappeared.

11 Beloved '80s Restaurant Chains We Wish Were Still Around1. Howard Johnson's

Howard Johnson's was an iconic roadside chain that defined family dining mid-century and peaked in popularity during the '70s and '80s. Famous for its bright orange roofs and classic Americana feel, Howard Johnson's offered a wide menu that included fried clams, burgers, a deli menu and its legendary "28 flavors" of ice cream. The combination of casual dining, comfort food and ice cream sundaes made it a favorite stop for families on road trips.

What made Howard Johnson's especially memorable was its consistency and nationwide recognition. You could rely on a familiar meal and dessert almost anywhere in the U.S., giving travelers a comforting sense of home. However, the chain struggled to compete with newer fast food chains and changing consumer tastes. Mismanagement, outdated decor and rising real estate costs led to the gradual closure of most locations by the late 1980s and 1990s, leaving only a handful of nostalgic locations behind.

2. Ponderosa Steakhouse

Ponderosa Steakhouse was a family-style steakhouse chain that offered hearty meals at affordable prices. Famous for its all-you-can-eat salad bars and a variety of steak, chicken and seafood dishes, it became a popular spot for families looking for casual dining with generous portions. The chain's approachable menu and family-friendly atmosphere were key to its widespread appeal.

Despite its popularity, Ponderosa Steakhouse declined as tastes shifted toward fast-casual dining and modern steakhouse chains with trendier menus. Franchising issues and inconsistent quality between locations also contributed to its decline. By the early 2000s, many Ponderosa locations had closed or rebranded, leaving fans nostalgic for its hearty meals, low prices and the classic steakhouse experience it offered. While a few still remain, the chain is not nearly as popular as it was in the 1980s.

3. Chi-Chi's

Chi-Chi's brought Tex-Mex cuisine to the mainstream in the '80s, known for tacos, fajitas and festive margaritas. Its colorful decor and lively atmosphere made it a go-to for casual dinners and celebrations. For many, Chi-Chi's represented a fun, slightly kitschy dining experience that introduced Mexican-inspired flavors to diners across the U.S.

The chain ultimately went bankrupt in the early 2000s after a hepatitis outbreak and declining sales. Many fans still remember its combination of playful decor, generous portions and accessible menu. Despite its closure, Chi-Chi's left a lasting imprint on casual dining, and many wish it could return to bring back the flavors and fun it once offered. The good news—Chi Chi's is being reborn in St. Louis Park, Minn., so locals and travelers can enjoy its iconic menu once again.

4. Burger Chef

Burger Chef was once one of America's top fast-food chains, known for flame-broiled burgers and the innovative "Funmeal," a precursor to McDonald's Happy Meal. The chain offered simple, consistent fast food, including chili burgers and fries, which became staples for kids and families. Fans really enjoyed the "Works Bar," which offered numerous toppings and condiments so you could make your own customized burger.

Despite its popularity at the time, intense competition from McDonald's and Wendy's, combined with corporate mismanagement, led to its decline in the late 1980s. By the early '90s, most locations had closed or been sold to other chains, leaving a generation of fans nostalgic for its creative, kid-friendly approach to fast food.

5. Steak & Ale

Steak & Ale was a casual steakhouse that offered a rustic, yet approachable dining experience. Patrons loved its steak, ribs and all-you-can-eat salad bar. Unlike fancier steakhouses, Steak & Ale emphasized affordability without sacrificing flavor, making it a popular choice for family dinners and social gatherings, especially at a time when salad bars were especially popular.

The chain suffered during the rise of larger, more modern steakhouse chains and increased competition from casual dining brands. Management changes and financial struggles in the 1990s led to many locations closing, leaving fans missing its hearty meals and warm, unpretentious atmosphere.

6. ShowBiz Pizza

ShowBiz Pizza was a family entertainment and dining chain that became hugely popular in the 1980s for combining pizza with arcade games, character shows and a fun, kid-friendly atmosphere. Its menu centered on pizza, wings, salads and soft drinks, but the real draw was the animatronic band, the Rock-afire Explosion, which performed songs while kids enjoyed their meals. For many families, ShowBiz Pizza was a destination for birthday parties, weekend outings and a full-on entertainment experience.

In the early 1990s, ShowBiz Pizza merged with Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre, and the two chains gradually consolidated under the Chuck E. Cheese brand. The animatronic shows were phased out or rebranded, and the unique characters disappeared, leaving only the Chuck E. Cheese mascot. Fans of the original ShowBiz locations still remember the whimsical entertainment, large arcade selection and fun pizza parties that felt far more immersive than today's Chuck E. Cheese experience.

7. Beefsteak Charlie's

Beefsteak Charlie's was known for its all-you-can-eat steak, salad and baked potato deals. The chain's concept of unlimited portions at a fixed price made it a hit with hungry diners, especially in the '70s and '80s. Its casual dining was perfect for families and groups looking to indulge.

However, overexpansion and the costs of maintaining quality across multiple locations contributed to its downfall. By the late 1980s, the chain struggled financially, and most locations closed. Fans still reminisce about the generous portions and fun, hearty meals that Beefsteak Charlie's offered.

8. Sambo's Restaurant

Sambo's was a breakfast-focused chain specializing in pancakes, waffles and omelets. Its family-friendly environment and all-day breakfast menu made it a favorite for weekend brunches and morning gatherings. Many remember it for comfort food breakfasts and generous portions.

Controversy over the chain's name and branding led to its decline, alongside competition from newer breakfast chains. By the late 1980s, most Sambo's locations had closed or rebranded, leaving fans nostalgic for its pancakes, breakfast classics and casual diner vibes.

9. Ground Round

Ground Round was a casual dining chain that emphasized sports bars, salad bars and a relaxed atmosphere. Menu highlights included burgers, steaks and salads, all served in a fun, family environment. Its concept of combining casual dining with a bar and grill made it popular for both families and adults.

Like many other restaurants of the time, financial difficulties, changing consumer preferences and rising competition in the casual dining space led to the closure of most Ground Round locations. Fans remember it for its laid-back vibe, diverse menu and the balance of family- and adult-friendly dining experiences.

10. Gino's Hamburgers

Gino's Hamburgers was a beloved East Coast fast-food chain that competed directly with McDonald's and Burger Chef. Known for its flame-broiled burgers, cheesesteaks and fries, Gino's also offered menu staples like the Big Gino and chili dogs, which became favorites for families and kids. Many fans remember the chain for its consistent quality and hometown feel, especially in its mid-Atlantic locations.

What made Gino's special was its combination of fast-food convenience with a slightly more personalized touch than that of larger national chains. Unfortunately, Gino's struggled as the fast food market consolidated in the 1980s, and it was eventually sold to Hardee's, which converted most locations. Today, fans still reminisce about its unique burger flavors and regional charm, wishing the chain had survived to compete with modern burger spots.

11. D'Lites

D'Lites was a fast food chain that carved out a niche in the 1980s by offering "healthier" alternatives to traditional burgers and fries. Its menu featured low-fat hamburgers, baked potatoes, grilled chicken sandwiches, and salads, along with shakes and treats made with reduced-fat ice cream. The chain marketed itself as a guilt-free option for health-conscious diners at a time when low-calorie fast food was just starting to gain attention.

What made D'Lites popular was its unique positioning: it combined the convenience and speed of traditional fast food with a focus on lower-calorie, better-for-you options. Despite the concept's promise, the chain struggled financially in the late 1980s due to high operating costs, intense competition from established fast-food giants and a limited customer base for health-focused fast food at the time. By the early 1990s, most D'Lites locations had closed, leaving fans nostalgic for its innovative take on fast food.
