It wasn't a major commercial success when it first came out, but this signature David Bowie track is now regarded as one of the best tracks of his career.

"Heroes" is often considered a masterpiece by Bowie fans, but it underperformed on the charts at the time of its initial release in 1977. It was the first single from Bowie's album of the same name, but the song ultimately failed to break through on the Billboard Hot 100.

The experimental, art-rock track had slightly more success across the pond, peaking at No. 24 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart — but some would argue that the "Heroes" should have been a chart-topper right from the start.

Instead, it took decades for the song to reach its highest chart position, rising in popularity over 40 years later following Bowie's death in 2016. That year, "Heroes" peaked at No. 9 on Billboard's Rock Digital Song Sales chart, and hit No. 11 on the Hot Rock Songs chart.

It had a similar resurgence another decade later, in January 2026, after "Heroes" was featured in the closing credits of the Stranger Things series finale. That month, the song hit the Hot Alternative Songs chart for the first time, landing at No. 9.

But regardless of its performance on the charts, "Heroes" has gone down in history as one of the most revered songs from Bowie's catalog. A fan-favorite track, "Heroes" was even named the Best Classic Rock Song of All Time by Collider in 2025.

It's ranked at No. 23 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, and it holds the No. 6 spot on Pitchfork's 200 Best Songs of the '70s.

When you're an interior designer who's always been enchanted by tiny homes, you have no choice but to scoop one up when the perfect property comes on the market—right? Ghislaine Viñas, who is based between Manhattan and Tivoli, New York, was taken by a 600-square-foot 1970s fixer-upper she saw listed for sale in Twin Lakes, New York and decided to transform the space into a vibrant oasis.

"As an interior designer, I am constantly immersed in shaping spaces for clients, whether that be in loft apartments, penthouses, beach homes or historic houses, but I’ve always been drawn to the idea of renovating and designing a tiny home for myself," she says. "I was captivated by the challenge of distilling a space down to its essentials, making it feel calm, intentional and comfortable, while still reflecting my 'aesthetics of happiness' design philosophy."

Viñas's Tivoli home is just seven minutes away from this new property, which "serves as a sunny happy retreat for family and friends." Decorated with geometric prints and pops of sunny yellow, the airy home "represents an extension of life upstate and a place to slow down and enjoy a different pace," the designer says.

While interior designers are known for their intentionality, working within the constraints of a small space allows even less room for error or excess. "You really have to consider layout, storage, light and materiality so they work together seamlessly," Viñas says. "There’s no room for anything unnecessary, so everything has to be intentional and easy to maintain."

It was important to Viñas to ensure that the redesigned space appeared much brighter and more open. "Originally, the home felt cramped and dark, with dated finishes and a disjointed floor plan," she says. "By rethinking the layout—pushing the kitchen wall, expanding the bathroom and opening up ceiling heights—my husband, Jaime, and I were able to completely change how the space flows."

Viñas also brought in new windows, skylights, and a sliding glass door that "made a dramatic difference, flooding the interiors with natural light," she reflects. Another upgrade that truly took the home to the next level? Replacing the flooring—out went the existing concrete, in came powder-white ash wood.

Before the reno, the home's exterior had potential yet didn't make the warm, welcoming first impression it does today.

Why settle for a neutral door color when you can have a bit of fun? "Yellow has always felt inherently joyful to me," Viñas says of the happy hue, which makes an appearance both inside the home and out. "It’s warm, optimistic and immediately uplifting, which is exactly how I wanted guests to feel as they walked into the home—I’ve always loved painting the front door of a home a fun color as it’s almost like a sneak peek of what's to come."

Layered yet by no means overwhelming, the living room serves as a stylish, functional space to gather in. "I wanted the home to feel clean, bright and fresh, but still very personal and full of character," Viñas says. "It’s rooted in a Scandinavian sensibility with light woods and crisp whites, layered with bold color and playful elements."

This area of the living room features a hybrid of old and new features like. "We kept the original wood-burning stove and reframed it in white zellige tile, which feels like a balance between honoring the home’s past and giving it the much needed refresh it deserved," Viñas explains.

Previously, the living room was rooted in grays, with wood-colored flooring. "Watching this once neglected, closed-off home become something that feels bright open, and full of joyful energy was incredible," Viñas shares.

Personality reigns supreme all throughout the space. "There are a lot of meaningful pieces woven in, like the Shongololo rug I designed for The Rug Company, which is inspired by the millipedes from my childhood in South Africa, and a painting by my youngest daughter in the hallway," Viñas shares.

Viñas went all in with her kitchen reno. "Every adjustment with layout had to be carefully considered," she says.

Luxe looking zellige tile shines in the kitchen, too, instantly brightening up the space. "Light was the driving force behind every design decision," the designer says. "I always say I was a cat in a past life, because I love finding the sunny spots in a home to curl up in."

The home's outdoor space is well-suited to warm-weather entertaining. "It’s been such a joy to spend time in our tiny home," Viñas says. "The home was really designed as a place to gather, so it’s been lovely to invite friends, family and people from the design community to come and experience it and share a bit of upstate living with them."

Luis de la Rosa, a Mexican animator and illustrator whose credits include Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and My Little Pony: The Movie, has died at the age of 34.

While attending the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, de la Rosa was struck by a train on Wednesday, June 24, Annecy festival organizers told The Hollywood Reporter.

French newspaper Le Dauphine Libere first reported the news, saying that emergency services attended to him near the railroad tracks, adding that he was wearing festival credentials when they arrived. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

An investigation has been opened to determine his exact cause of death.

Throughout his career, de la Rosa worked on films including Space Jam: A New Legacy, Carmen Sandiego, and My Dad the Bounty Hunter, as well as on television shows such as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Archibald’s Next Big Thing, and Animaniacs.

Some in attendance at Annecy posted on social media, paying tribute.

"I met Luis for the first time during this Annecy. Had a nice chat and he gave me one of his beautiful business cards. When I heard the news I was in my hotel and the same card was next to my bed. So sudden and tragic. Way too young. Rest in peace," animator Ross O'Donovan posted.

"What an insane tragedy, I can’t believe I saw him an hour before it happened. He was so young, so full of fire and passion for everyone. He gave us huge hugs and told us he loved us constantly for the whole Annecy trip. And now he’s gone. RIP Luis de la Rosa, my friend," illustrator Charles Kugler wrote.

"Rest in Peace Luis De La Rosa, and thank you so much for the beautiful animation and incredible art you had given us over the years. We will always remember the wonderful moments you helped bring to life and will never forget your legacy," a fan commented.

Before Bravo became synonymous with The Real Housewives and Vanderpump Rules, celebrity fitness trainer Jackie Warner helped define the network's early reality TV era.

Premiering in 2006, Work Out offered an inside look at Warner's elite Los Angeles gym, following the personal and professional lives of her staff as workplace rivalries, romances, and explosive confrontations unfolded. The formula would later become a hallmark of Bravo programming, and by 2007 the series was drawing nearly 1 million viewers.

But just as Work Out was gaining momentum, it came to an abrupt end after three seasons. Warner faced criticism over remarks she made about a fitness model and breast cancer survivor who trained at her gym. She has since maintained that the show's third-season executive producer selectively edited footage to portray her negatively, something she believes contributed to the series' cancellation.

Warner returned to Bravo in 2010 with Thintervention, but the series lasted just one season. Afterward, she admitted she felt lost.

"To be honest, I felt a bit lost and started partying a lot. It felt like I was taking a few steps backward in life and I started making bad decisions," she shared on her website in 2015 via Bravo. "I looked in the mirror one morning and realized that I did not like the person that I had become."

Determined to change course, she quit drinking, stepped away from dating, and distanced herself from much of her former social circle. She also threw herself back into fitness, adopting the mantra, "When in doubt, go workout," while continuing to build her brand through bestselling books and personal training.

The years that followed brought additional challenges. In 2015, Warner mourned the death of friend and fellow fitness star, Greg Plitt, after he was struck by a train. Two years later, she was arrested following a car crash in West Hollywood. Warner later said she had unknowingly "sleep-driven" after taking Ambien and had no memory of getting behind the wheel. At the same time, authorities reported she registered a blood alcohol level of about 0.08.

Shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, Warner made another life-changing decision, leaving Los Angeles and returning to her hometown in Ohio to be closer to family. The move marked what she has described as a fresh start, allowing her to focus on online coaching and a quieter lifestyle away from Hollywood.

Few songs from the 1970s still get people talking quite like this ABBA hit.

"Waterloo" started as an upbeat fan favorite, went on to become one of the group’s most recognizable early successes. However, the song faced an unexpected and bizarre ban nearly two decades after its release.

At the start of the Gulf War, the BBC banned 67 songs from being played on the radio in 1991. What made the list so striking was how many well-known and widely loved tracks from music history ended up included.

According to the Los Angeles Times, certain songs were believed to be in bad taste. The tunes were considered for how they could offend listeners, as fighting lingered in the Persian Gulf.

"Waterloo" used the 1815 defeat at the Battle of Waterloo as a metaphor for romantic surrender. Since the song was about a historical war, the BBC insisted it not be played throughout the Gulf conflict.

The BBC ban included "Waterloo" and ABBA's "Under Attack." Also included in the list of 67 songs were "Walk Like an Egyptian" by The Bangles, "Atomic" by Blondie, "Love is a Battlefield" by Pat Benatar, "Back in the USSR" by The Beatles, "Sailing" by Rod Stewart, "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, and "Give Peace a Chance" by John Lennon.

"Waterloo" won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, and subsequently propelled Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog, and Bjorn Ulvaeus to international stardom. The album it's featured on, ABBA Gold, surpassed 1,000 weeks on the UK charts, according to Official Charts in 2021.

In the U.S., "Waterloo" shot to the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1974. It remained at No. 6 and on the charts for 17 weeks in total. In the U.K., the song took the top spot in 1974, giving ABBA their first No. 1 hit.

In a 2022 interview for Apple Music 1’s Deep Hidden Meaning Radio show, Ulvaeus credited “Waterloo” to The Beatles. “It’s about four people wanting more than anything else to be a pop group and singing in the language of pop, which is English,” he said.

“Our biggest inspiration was the Beatles. I think ‘Waterloo’ is in a tradition of pure pop and in the tradition of the fantastic music that was written around at the end of the ’50s, beginning of the ’60s, in the Brill Building and Carole King and [Gerry] Goffin, and then The Beatles.”

While the decision to ban ABBA's "Waterloo" was temporary, it marked a strange footnote in the band's history. Today, it’s remembered less for controversy and more for its lasting place in pop music.

Dutton Ranch will be back! With Season 1 about to end its run, Paramount+ announced a Season 2 renewal. When Yellowstone ended, many fans were left slack-jawed and stranded. Luckily, they weren't left so for long as CBS/Paramount announced spinoff series for two of the series main characters, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the siblings and offspring of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the patriarch and lead character of Yellowstone.

Kayce would have his own spinoff series, Marshals, on CBS, and Beth would spin off into her own series with the then-unnamed Dutton Ranch. Along with her would naturally come with Rip (Cole Hauser) and Carter (Finn Little. It was later announced that Oscar nominees Annette Bening and Ed Harris had joined the lead cast of the spinoff as series cast.

In a sense, yes. In the series finale of Yellowstone, the Yellowstone ranch was sold to the Broken Rock Indian Reservation in order to protect the land from overdevelopment. At that point, the members of the Dutton family that remained, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) went their separate ways, as each had families of their own as well as dreams and goals of their own to follow.

Yes! In June 2026, shortly beofre its Season 1 finale, CBS renewed Dutton Ranch for Season 2.

Kayce Dutton (Grimes) remained in Montana with his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill). After mourning the loss of his wife who died from cancer, he joined the U.S. Marshals. What was the original Yellowstone about?

The modern-day Western premiered in 2018 as a kickoff of sorts for the Paramount Network's rebrand (it was formerly Spike TV) and clearly hit a cultural nerve. What can you say about this little rapscallion except that he's not so little anymore? Carter befriended Beth when the two sat on a hospital bench waiting for progress reports on their respective fathers. When his dies and he is left an orphan, Beth eventually takes him in after he is picked up by the cops and tells them she’s his guardian. In the new series, Carter has grown into a teen, a rebellious one at that. He seems to be a product of Beth and Rip's upbringing - he has Beth's fire and a youthful Rip's hotheadedness.

As you can see, Little had a bit of a growth spurt between filming Seasons 4 and 5. He returns for the spinoff series and we're glad he's back!

Over the years, many favorite HGTV and TLC shows have just vanished from the airwaves. Look at Counting On and Christina on the Coast. It leads to questions about what happened to them, and why they would be canceled when fans loved them.

In many cases, production costs or people leaving the show lead to cancellations. There can also be a change in the production schedule that leads to a network decision to end a run. However, there have also been some controversial moments that have led to many of these 12 HGTV and TLC shows getting quietly canceled.

A spin-off of 19 Kids and Counting, Counting On initially followed Jessa and Jill Duggar, but then other members of the family were involved over the course of the 11-season run. In 2020, the series was abruptly canceled, and it was due to the arrest of Josh Duggar for receiving and possessing child pornography.

The network stated that the decision to cancel was to allow the Duggar family to address the situation and any concerns in a private manner. Since then Joseph Duggar and his wife Kendra have been arrested. While some of the older children have continued to share their lives online, many of the younger members of the family have remained private.

AMY ROBACH, MAMA JUNE, HONEY BOO BOO ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’

Another TLC show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, was canceled for some similar reasons. The cancellation was a relatively quiet one, with TMZ being the one to announce the details. Mama June had reportedly started dating and old boyfriend who had already been convicted of molesting one of her eight-year-old relatives, and TLC decided to cut ties.

Eventually, TLC did give a statement to say that the decision to cancel was to protect the younger members of the cast. It was also “effective immediately,” and covered absolutely everything to do with Mama June’s brand.

‘Sweet Home Sextuplets’

Remember following the lives of Eric and Courtney Waldrop after Courtney gave birth to six children? Sweet Home Sextuplets ran for three seasons, giving a look at how the couple managed their busy schedules, handled vacations, and remained faith-based in everything they did.

The decision to cancel wasn’t made by the network. In this case, the Waldrops decided that their children needed more privacy. They have shared some updates on social media, but they no longer have their whole lives documented by cameras. They also shared on social media that the network often tried to twist things when it came to them standing firm in their faith, and they wanted to walk away from that.

‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’

In late 2024, Doubling Down with the Derricos was officially canceled. The decision came after the divorce of leads Deon and Karen Derrico. The series followed the lives of the family, who had multiple sets of multiple children, totaling 13 in all. Fans got a chance to see what it was like for the family to juggle their lives.

Deon shared that after their divorce, their contract with TLC had come to an end. They decided not to renew that contract, and just recently, Karen has been arrested for aggravated stalking, among other charges, against Deon.

‘OutDaughtered’

Technically, OutDaughtered hasn’t been officially canceled. However, it is on an indefinite hiatus, and it doesn’t look like leads Adam and Danielle Busby are interested in returning to filming. The series followed the Busby family as their family grew with the birth of five girls. All five were born early, leading to some health complications, which were documented throughout the series.

The Busby family decided that they preferred a quieter life with more privacy for their children after the 10th season finished in June 2024. They have confirmed that they are not filming, but they give updates about their family life, including how they are co-op homeschooling their 10-year-old quintuplets.

‘Christina on the Coast’

A number of HGTV shows faced a shocking cancellation decision when the network slashed budgets, and Christina on the Coast was one of them. The six-season series followed Christina Hall (formerly Haack) as she focused on expanding her design business. She took on outdated Southern California properties and turned them into modern-day masterpieces.

However, home renovation shows cost much more than house flipping shows, with some shows costing as much as $500,000 per episode. Because of that, HGTV had to re-evaluate the budget, and it led to the end of Christina on the Coast.

‘Married to Real Estate’

When Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson started Married to Real Estate, they didn’t exactly know what they were doing. It was a chance to run a real estate business and raise their daughters at the same time, and the series delved into it all. It was more than just a chance to see houses be transformed, but also more of an instructional way to create a functional and beautiful home.

Like Christina on the Coast, the series became a victim of budget cuts and the changing viewer landscape. The cost of production was too high to justify, and the two were blindsided by the decision after coming back from vacation — repeating history, as they came back from vacation to learn that their entire production crew was changing one year!

‘Izzy Does It’

Another home renovation series on HGTV had the same treatment. After just one season, Izzy Does It was abruptly but quietly canceled. The network barely made an announcement, with host Izzy Battres having to let fans know via social media. Like with the other two shows, the decision was due to budget cuts and a shift in scheduling due to people switching to streaming services.

Fans were outraged about Izzy Does It being canceled, pointing out that it was yet another BIPOC series leaving the airwaves. There was also outrage due to the fact that Battres would show lower-cost renovation options, helping to make those dreams a little more achievable.

‘Boise Boys’

Before the 2025 controversy, HGTV had other home renovation shows that didn’t quite make it past a season, and Boise Boys was one of them. The series followed Luke Caldwell and Clint Robertson as they brought massive overhauls to historically sensitive renovations, and it was a success with fans. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough live viewers to justify keeping it going.

Boise Boys was originally repackaged into Outgrown in late 2021, but the series didn’t gain traction. There was no scandal, and instead, the two friends went back to their former lives, working on their own projects.

‘Desert Flippers’

In 2019, Desert Flippers went off the air for the last time. The four-season series followed Eric and Lindsay Bennett, as they would work on real estate flipping in the California desert heat. It was a wild ride, but it suddenly just disappeared. No more episodes were filmed, and there was never a real update from HGTV.

This was one of those quiet cancellations. The Bennetts moved back to the midwest, where they have continued flipping homes and creating custom builds. It’s likely that the series just didn’t pull in the viewership that was needed at the time, but nobody has officially shared the real reason for the cancellation.

‘Flip or Flop’ and It’s Spin-Offs

In March 2022, Flip or Flip was canceled, despite it still being a successful series for the network. However, before that, other attempts at building a Flip or Flop franchise failed. Each of the shows focused on house flipping duos in different locations, bringing to light the deesign process and the work that goes into the projects.

As for Flip or Flop, that was canceled due to Hall’s decision to step away from the series. She struggled to work with ex-husband Tarek El Moussa, and it was the best decision. Other shows were pulled by HGTV — with some being just quietly canceled with little announcement — due to budgetary reasons.

‘Hidden Potential’

Now, as you start to think of the host, Jasmine Roth, you’ll realize that you see her on HGTV still. She is a network superstar, so you have to wonder what happened to one of her shows. Hidden Potential was a chance to highlight how cookie-cutter suburban houses could be turned into something magnificent with personality.

The series was quietly “retired” after two seasons. Instead of outright canceling it and ending Roth’s contract, she was moved to another series, Help! I Wrecked My House, which would offer something a little more unique compared to other home renovation shows. In this show, which is still on the air, she rescues failed DIY projects by homeowners!

Netflix's new crime thriller starring Gal Gadot, Oscar Isaac and Gerard Butler has already been called the worst of the year.

The movie stars Oscar Isaac as Nick, a modern-day scholar obsessed with the works of Dante Alighieri, best known for the Divine Comedy, in which he described the nine circles of hell. There is also a black and white timeline, where Nick is accosted by the Italian mob and offered the chance to study the lost original manuscript of The Divine Comedy.

If that sounds exciting, the film's pace slows when it jumps between 2001 and the 14th century, where it follows Dante’s life around the time that he began writing his masterpiece. Oscar Isaac also plays the role of Dante as well as Nick.

Based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Nick Tosches, In the Hand of Dante also co-stars Al Pacino, Jason Momoa and John Malkovich.

The film received middling early reviews when it screened at film festivals, sitting on a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But since landing on Netflix and reaching a wider audience, it has been panned by the critics.

RogerEbert.com compared In the Hand of Dante to Francis Ford Coppola's meme-worthy misfire Megalopolis because "there’s the sense that only the filmmaker fully understands what in Dante’s fiery Hell all of this is supposed to mean."

Metro also compared it to the 2024 Aubrey Plaza movie. "In the Hand of Dante is a sprawling, overly-ambitious mess that’s hard to follow at times, despite some of its actors’ best efforts. But if you enjoyed Megalopolis’s perplexing excess of, well, everything, then this may be one for you."

There’s no denying that the 1980s were a legendary decade with lasting impacts. For example, iconic movies came out in the '80s—from The Princess Bride to Back to the Future to John Hughes' flicks, and even the last two original Star Wars films, so many classics are from this decade. We also saw the rise of scrunchies (which are still ever-popular and fashionable), Walkmans and music icons like Madonna took center stage.

But what was life actually like during the '80s, especially for children? How did the events of that period affect the people who grew up during it, and what traits might they have now, as a result? Plus, what is a common misconception about people who grew up in that era, and why does it need clearing up? All of this information can be helpful to know, whether you were born in the 1980s or love someone who was. Understanding ourselves and others can promote healthy relationships.

Parade asked a psychologist to answer those questions (and more) for you. Read ahead for her expert-backed insights and see what sticks out. Plus, seven traits that many people born in the 1980s have. Which characteristics sound particularly relatable?

What Was Childhood Like in the 1980s?

If you ask five different people what childhood in the ‘80s was like, you might get five different answers. However, there are a few cultural moments that many shared, and there was a similar vibe among parents in that decade. 

“Many people who were children during that time report, during their childhood, not being given as much respect and oversight as children born in subsequent generations, yet having more freedom to do things so long as they were ‘home by dinner’ and/or ‘when the streetlight came on,’” says Dr. Brandy Smith, PhD, a licensed psychologist with Thriveworks in Birmingham, AL. “There was a general expectation of doing what one was told and respecting elders.” 

Further, if they weren’t respectful, she continues, many could expect corporal punishment, either by someone within or outside of the home.

Another couple of defining features she adds are an analog childhood and experiencing major technological advancements.

What Do They Call People Who Were Born in the 1980s?

Generationally speaking, people born in the 1980s are considered Millennials, also sometimes called “Gen Y” or “Generation Y.”

However, you might also hear them referred to by other names, Dr. Smith says, such as xennials, echo boomers, the MTV generation or the burnout generation.

Is There a Specific Psychology of People Who Grew Up in the 1980s?

Dr. Smith “cannot say” there’s a specific psychology of people born in this decade, but points to the impacts of what happened during that time, such as major technological advancements.

She’s also heard that people who grew up in the ‘80s are thankful that “their youth was not so readily captured and shared as it was happening.” In other words, no Instagram posts or smartphone videos.

7 Traits of People Born in the 1980s, According to a Psychologist

According to Dr. Smith, Millennials born in the ‘80s often have the following traits.

1. They're patient

While this generation had its fair share of new technologies, they also had to grow up with it being slower—and that requires patience.

“Some people suggest that people born in the 1980s and before are able to be more patient with people born after the 1980s because they have more lived experience with things taking longer, rather than instantaneous access or results,” Dr. Smith says.

2. They're independent

Independence is often associated with people born in the ‘80s.

“Some connect that independence to what was referred to as the ‘latchkey’ kid experience of that time, in which the child had more responsibility and freedom at an earlier age,” Dr. Smith adds, stating a concept that people born in the 1970s can also relate to.

3. They're able to entertain themselves 

Dr. Smith discusses how some people find that boredom was more common in the 1980s, and how that can ignite creativity. 

“This is not to say that children born after the 1980s are not creative,” she clarifies. “It is more about being able to get creative with how to navigate boredom instead of expecting something outside of self to ‘entertain.’”

4. They’re resourceful and perseverant

Someone born in the ‘80s is probably going to find a way to “get it done.” Dr. Smith points to their wide range of experiences with analog childhood and the development of technology being the reason behind that.

She adds that this group has a “versatility to do what is needed to get the job done” and is “highly invested in actually getting the job done and not ‘half-***ing’ it (as a person of the 1980s may say).”

5. They have social skills

Dr. Smith has heard reports of people born in the ‘80s feeling more confident and capable in social settings.

“They had more direct experience interacting with people in person as they grew up, whereas children born after sometimes report less comfort or skills within social situations because of having more virtual experience than in-real-life social experience,” she explains.

6. They’re hardworking

This trait also ties back to the experiences many people shared in the 1980s. 

“That may connect to growing up with responsibility and in what was considered a time of abundance, followed by ‘coming of age’ during economic experiences of uncertainty that instilled or reinforced the idea of working hard and ‘doing what one has to’ to be financially okay,” Dr. Smith explains. 

She finds these individuals will get something done, even if they don’t enjoy it, which goes back to perseverance.

7. They can handle losing or hearing the word “no”

Parents said “no” more often in the 1980s, Dr. Smith says, and children became used to it (or even expected it). She adds that “participation awards” weren’t as common then, either, which played a role in this trait.

“Parents of children in the 1980s, generally speaking, did not go out of their way to prevent children from losing or hardships,” Dr. Smith says. “Rather, they viewed it as a normative part of life that was important to let their child experience and teach them how to navigate it, because they knew their child would hear ‘no’ and lose many times throughout their life.”

The Biggest Misconception About People Who Grew Up in the ‘80s

The above traits are true of many people who grew up in the 1980s. But what’s not so true, even if many people think it is?

“This could be said for any generation, but I would say the biggest misconception is that people from this generation can’t understand or don’t want to understand people from other generations,” Dr. Smith states. 

She’s also heard the notion that people of this generation think their generation is “the best,” often fondly reminiscing about the 1980s. She wonders how much this is a generational thing, though, versus just recalling a time when life was simpler, since it was childhood.

After all, no matter if we were born in the same decade or a different one, we’re going to be similar in some ways and different in others—and that’s a good thing.

New York hardcore pioneers Cro-Mags have announced a European and UK tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of their landmark 1986 debut album, The Age of Quarrel. 

The "40 Years of Quarrel" trek begins on July 20 in Gdansk, Poland, and wraps up on Aug. 11 in Barcelona, Spain.

Led by founding member Harley Flanagan, the band will perform across multiple countries as they honor the album that helped shape the crossover of hardcore punk and thrash metal during the 1980s.

The anniversary run includes club shows and festival appearances throughout Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Greece, Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Spain.

Released in 1986, The Age of Quarrel became one of the defining records of New York hardcore. The album introduced a sound that blended hardcore punk with thrash metal and helped establish Cro-Mags as one of the genre's most influential bands.

Harley Flanagan is the only musician from the original The Age of Quarrel lineup to appear on every Cro-Mags studio album. In 2019, he secured exclusive rights to the Cro-Mags name following a legal settlement involving former members John Joseph and Mackie Jayson.

The band has released six studio albums to date, with In the Beginning arriving in 2020 after a two-decade gap between studio releases. The anniversary tour follows the recent release of "Wired for Chaos," Cro-Mags' first new song in six years and the band's first release through BLKIIBLK.

"Wired for Chaos" was released alongside a music video directed by Rex Miller featuring live performances and behind-the-scenes footage from recent tours.

Cro-Mags have confirmed that their seventh studio album is scheduled for release in 2027 through BLKIIBLK. The upcoming record will be the band's first full-length album since In the Beginning and will include the momentum created by "Wired for Chaos."

With the upcoming 40 Years of Quarrel tour, Cro-Mags will celebrate the legacy of one of hardcore's most influential albums while also looking ahead to the next chapter in the band's career.

After conducting a blind taste test, Consumer Reports named Sam's Club Member's Mark Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken its Best Overall pick.

According to the publication, tasters said the winning chicken stood out because it offered:

• Moist, juicy meat
• A deep roasted flavor
• Balanced seasoning with hints of onion, garlic and paprika
• An evenly browned, appetizing appearance

Consumer Reports placed the retailers into two categories. Sam's Club earned the Top Pick designation, while Costco, Stop & Shop, Walmart, Wegmans and Whole Foods all landed in the Best Overall group for their respective rotisserie chickens.

BJ's Wholesale Club, Hannaford, ShopRite and The Fresh Market were recommended as better choices for soups, salads and other recipes.

What Made Sam's Club's Chicken the Winner

I Am a Handbag Person

I am not that person with a landyard around her neck and just a seapass card. For some unknown reason, I feel that I need to carry everything with me all of the time. My sunglasses, my phone, my lip gloss, my sunblock, my earbuds, my concealer (because I was up too late the night before), and yes, my sea-pass card and passport are in there as well.

So, whether I'm at sea, lounging on the deck, at the buffet, or at the theater, my bag is with me. If I'm ashore, it's the same, only it's stuffed to maximum capacity...just in case I need one of the above-mentioned items that I've stuffed into my bag.

Confession: I have too many bags; one look at the dozens hanging in my closet will support that. The problem was that I never had the "right" one that I could take from day to night and go just about everywhere with.

While falling down an Amazon search rabbit hole, yes, it was close to midnight, and a few days before a cruise, I came across a crossbody bag that caught my eye. A Few Things Worth Noting

For those of you who've been eyeing the overpriced version and couldn't quite stomach the price tag: this is your sign to stop waiting.

The Part Where I Admit I Was Wrong

I did not see this coming. But here's the thing about cruising: You learn to be ruthlessly practical about what you bring and what you wear, and when something works, it works.

This bag has been on beaches in Aruba, on the water taxi to Atlantis on Paradise Island, and through more gangway security lines than I can count. It has never let me down. It looks put-together. It holds everything I need. And if I lose it overboard, which has not happened but is theoretically possible when you're leaning over a railing trying to photograph a dolphin. I will simply order another one before I even get home.

Four years as a band. Two studio albums. And, one final show on May 2, 1980.

Sixteen days later, their singer was gone and Joy Division ceased to exist.

The surviving members went on to form the band New Order, one of the most influential bands of the decade that followed. But Joy Division, the original band that started it all, was completely over. Now, 46 years later, the recordings from those final months are being officially released for the first time. And before the year’s out, the band that lasted only four years will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Joy Division came together in Manchester in 1976 and left behind one of the most intense and short-lived careers in rock history. They put out two studio albums, Unknown Pleasures in 1979 and Closerin 1980, and built a sound so influential that its echoes are still everywhere in music today. Post-punk, gothic rock, new wave, electronic music, all of it runs through what Joy Division made in those four years. They never got the chance to find out how far they could go.

The Eternal (Live) box set arrives September 25, 2026, through Warner Music. The title feels like the perfect word for it. It's the first official collection of live recordings the band has ever put out, spanning 14 CDs, 16 live performances and two and a half hours of footage drawn from audience cassettes, soundboard tapes and broadcast recordings, all mastered at Abbey Road Studios. The package also includes photography by Anton Corbijn and Kevin Cummins and personal notes by the poet Simon Armitage.

The shows documented cover the full run of the band's final active years, from early dates in London, Altrincham, Manchester and Leeds to their European shows, including their well-known concert at the Paradiso in Amsterdam and stops in Eindhoven and Paris.

Then there are the later recordings.

Shows from the final months of Ian Curtis's life are here too, including one at the Winter Gardens in Malvern. And the box set ends with Joy Division's last-ever show, Birmingham, May 2, 1980. Curtis died sixteen days later, on May 18. He was only 23 years old.

Nobody in those recordings knew what was coming. The audience had no idea. The band didn't know.

Also in the box set is previously unseen footage of a Brussels concert. The Brussels footage has been something fans have wanted access to for decades. There are also two performances and a soundcheck from the Apollo Theatre in Manchester that were partly put out on VHS in 1982, and a brand new edit of Joy Division: A Malcolm Whitehead Film.

These recordings don't just show what Joy Division sounded like live. They show what the end of something extraordinary looked like before anyone knew it was ending.

46 Years Later, the Rock Hall Finally Calls

The box set lands just weeks before Joy Division/New Order get one of music's highest possible honors.

Joy Division/New Order will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on November 14, 2026. It's their third nomination and will be their first induction. The 2026 class also includes Oasis, Iron Maiden, Sade, Phil Collins, Wu-Tang Clan, Billy Idol and Luther Vandross.

Peter Hook, Joy Division's bassist, confirmed that he'll be there. "Wild horses wouldn't keep me away," he said. But he's also said he won't share the stage with his former bandmates to accept the award. Hook and the remaining members of New Order, led by Bernard Sumner, haven't performed together since 2007. Forty-six years after Joy Division ended, even the celebration of what they built comes with complications. Tragically, Ian Curtis isn’t alive to receive this well-deserved honor.

It's hard to believe it’s taken this long. Joy Division only existed for four years. They put out two studio albums. They played their last show on May 2, 1980, and were gone just sixteen days later. The music they made in that time has shaped decades of artists across genres that didn't even exist when the band was active.

Some things take time to be recognized for what they are.

The recordings on Eternal (Live) were captured between March 1979 and May 1980. They sounded like a band playing with everything ahead of them, on stages all across the UK and Europe, in front of crowds who had no idea they were watching something that would still be talked about half a century later.

The last recording on the box set was made sixteen days before it all ended.

Country music star Cody Johnson has released Banks of the Trinity, his 10th studio album and his first full-length record in nearly three years. 

The 16-track project arrived on Friday, following the success of his 2023 album Leather, which earned the CMA Album of the Year award and helped cement his place among country music’s biggest names.

Johnson announced the album's release to fans on Instagram, sharing a personal message about what inspired the project.

"Banks Of The Trinity is built on the sounds and influences I’ve loved my whole life, but it’s also rooted in the things that matter most to me: faith, family, hard work, and staying true to who you are. I couldn’t be more proud of this album. Thank you for listening.”

The release comes at a major point in Johnson's career. Earlier this year, he won Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year, the organization's highest honor. He also recently celebrated his fifth career No. 1 country radio hit with "The Fall."

Speaking to The Associated Press, Johnson said he still sees many first-time concertgoers at every show despite spending two decades in the music business.

"How many of you tonight are watching me and this band live for the very first time?"

He added that nearly 80% of audiences raise their hands, saying:

"And I'm thinking, you know, 20 years is a long time to work for something. But when you see that … What's the next 20 years look like?"

Johnson described the current stage of his career as the beginning of something new.

"I feel like I'm closing a book and I'm opening another one and it's all blank pages. Let's get to the next chapter."

Banks of the Trinity album reflects Cody Johnson's Texas roots and musical growth

The album's title track holds special meaning for Johnson, who grew up in Sebastopol, Texas, near the Trinity River.

The album includes collaborations with Luke Combs on "Shoot The Bull" and Brothers Osborne on "Fool Proof." Johnson also co-wrote two songs, "Time Bomb" and the closing track, "Yippy Ty Oh Hey Hey." Longtime collaborator Trent Willmon produced the project.

Before the album's release, Johnson gave fans a preview through Spotify's Day in the Life series, becoming the first country artist featured in the video series. During the episode, he introduced "Thank Somebody Country" and discussed how "Take Me Back (Leave Me There)" came together.

"'Take Me Back (Leave Me There)' was one of those songs where we made one pass with the band in the studio and I was like, 'this is cool, it's sexy, it's groovy, it's something you can still two-step to.'"

Cody Johnson says time away from touring helped shape the new country album

Johnson revealed that Banks of the Trinity almost looked very different.

Last year, he canceled several tour dates after upper respiratory and sinus infections caused a burst eardrum that required surgery. The unexpected break forced him away from the road for nearly three months.

Instead of slowing his career, Johnson said the recovery period changed the album for the better. During that time, he welcomed the birth of his son and returned to the studio with a fresh perspective.

He explained that songs including "Thank Somebody Country," "Take Me Back (Leave Me There)," "Cricket on a Hook," and "I Have" were added after the original version of the record had already been finished.

"What a blessing to have that kind of song fall in your lap when you're kind of up against the ropes. I mean, we thought we had the record done. It wasn't done."

Banks of the Trinity follows Johnson's steady rise from independent Texas artist to one of country music's most decorated performers. Since releasing Human: The Double Album in 2021, he has earned Grammy, CMA and ACM honors, while songs including "'Til You Can't," "The Painter," "Dirt Cheap" and "The Fall" have become major hits. His latest album continues that momentum while drawing from the values and experiences that have shaped his music throughout his career.

Nearly a dozen emails have been sent to TMZ from someone claiming to have information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. But according to retired FBI special agent Jason Pack, the biggest question isn’t necessarily who the sender claims to be—it’s whether that person knows something investigators need.

In an exclusive interview with Parade, Pack shared some insight into the messages and what they could mean for the case.

"What matters more is that whoever sent those emails knows something," Pack says. "TMZ was hopefully encouraging them to contact the FBI or Pima County directly. Tips can be left anonymously. The reward is real. Whatever fear is keeping that person quiet isn’t worth it. Not with a family still waiting for answers."

Pack also praised Nancy's youngest daughter, Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, for the way she has continued to handle the situation publicly.

"Savannah has handled an unimaginable situation with grace and professionalism that most people couldn’t manage on their best day," Pack continues, adding, "she has shown up for work, kept her mother’s name in the public conversation, and never stopped asking for help. That family deserves answers and they deserve peace."

Investigators believe that Nancy, 84, was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night on Feb. 1. On Friday, June 26, TMZ reported that it had received a new email in which the sender claimed to have video of the person who took Nancy—and footage of Nancy the day that she allegedly died. TMZ says it forwarded the email to the FBI, but so far, there have been no public updates.
