1991 Hit Released 35 Years Ago Today Had Lyric Switch That Changed Everything

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 4:47am

Get ready to feel really, really old.

Thirty-five years ago today, R.E.M. released "Losing My Religion," a song that defined the early '90s, at least in the alt rock genre. The song was the first single from R.E.M.'s seventh album, Out Of Time, which was released in March 1991. "Losing My Religion" was R.E.M.'s highest-charting single in the USA.

R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, wrote the main riff and chorus of the song on a mandolin. Frontman Michael Stipe didn't think the track was going to be an instant hit—or even a hit at all. In fact, the band released the song as sort of a set up to their next single. However, "Losing My Religion" ended up being wildly popular, making it to the No. 4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100—and it remained on the chart for 21 weeks.

"It’s such a weird song, we had no idea it was going to resonate the way that it did," Stipe said on the Broken Record podcast. He went on to say that there was one line that he changed which really helped drive the meaning of the song home. One of the most memorable lines in the song, "that's me in the corner/that's me in the spotlight" was actually a change that was made by Stipe. Expect the original lyrics used the word "kitchen" instead of "spotlight."

"What I was pulling from was being the shy wallflower who hangs back at the party or at the dance and doesn’t go up to the person that you’re madly in love with and say ‘I’ve kind of got a crush on you, how do you feel about me?'" Stipe explained on the podcast.

"There’s this whole relationship that’s happening only in the person’s mind and he doesn’t know whether he’s said too much or hasn’t said enough," Stipe continued, adding, "He’s like, in the corner of the dance floor watching everyone dance and watching the love of his life on the dance floor dancing with everyone cause that’s the most exciting person. Or, he’s in the kitchen behind the refrigerator."

In 2022, the music video for "Losing My Religion" surpassed one billion views on YouTube.

NFL Makes 'First-Ever' Announcement About Bad Bunny's Halftime Show

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 2:30am

Bad Bunny has once again broken records and made history. The Grammy-winning Puerto Rican superstar headlined the Super Bowl LX halftime show at Levi’s Stadium on Feb. 8, 2026, delivering an electrifying performance that reached an average of 128.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

But there’s more to this show than just the numbers. The NFL announced on Instagram that this was the first-ever Apple Music Halftime Show to feature a multilingual signing program, incorporating Puerto Rican Sign Language.

“This was the first time we’ve seen a multilingual signing program at a Super Bowl halftime show,” the NFL captioned alongside Bad Bunny’s performance clip.

Bad Bunny’s performance didn’t just wow audiences, it propelled his music to new heights. Days after the Super Bowl, his Spanish-language single “DtMF” climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking his first solo chart-topper without collaborators. Previously, he had reached the top as a featured artist on Cardi B’s “I Like It” in 2018.

View this post on Instagram

“DtMF” jumped from No. 10 to No. 1, fueled by 43 million streams, a 56% increase in radio airplay impressions, and 12,000 copies sold in one week. The milestone makes it only the fourth mostly Spanish-language song to top the Hot 100, and the first by a solo act without other artists.

Bad Bunny also dominates the chart with three other songs in the top 10, including “Baile Inolvidable” at No. 2.

As if music success wasn’t enough, Bad Bunny is also stepping into the world of film. He recently secured his first leading role in the upcoming historical drama Porto Rico, directed by René Pérez Joglar, known as Residente. The movie also stars A-listers Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton and Javier Bardem, making it one of the most anticipated casts in recent cinema.

Bad Bunny’s previous film appearances include minor roles in Happy Gilmore 2, Caught Stealing, and F9, but Porto Rico will mark his first challenge as a lead actor. Bad Bunny isn’t slowing down. He’s scheduled to perform in Tokyo, Japan, as part of Spotify’s Billions Club Live series on March 7, 2026. This concert will showcase 28 of his billion-stream hits, marking his first performance in Asia. While part of his ongoing Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour, the Spotify show is a special one-off event for his top fans in Japan.

Sometimes the hardest jewelry to find is the pair that lands perfectly between dainty and dramatic. You want something with presence, but not a full-on statement piece that overpowers your outfit. That in-between style often ends up being the most versatile in your collection. It’s the pair you reach for when you want a little extra oomph without going over the top.

The On 34th Shiny Button Earrings hit that sweet spot, and right now they’re an absolute steal. They’re currently marked down 80%, bringing the price from $35 to just $7. For a fashion-forward pair that looks far more elevated than its price tag suggests, that’s hard to beat.

These earrings are available in both gold and silver tones, making them easy to match with your existing jewelry. They measure approximately 0.7 inches by 1 inch in diameter and feature a post-back closure for secure wear. Set in mixed metal, they have a substantial look without feeling overwhelming. They also hold a solid 4.2-star rating, with one shopper simply describing  them as “pretty.”

Aesthetically, they have a strong modern heirloom vibe. They’re bold enough to be noticed but classic enough to stay relevant year after year. The ribbed, croissant-inspired texture nods to vintage jewelry design, giving them a timeless feel. At the same time, their details and construction exudes quiet luxury. They’re simple, but not plain and detailed, but not busy. That balance is what makes them so easy to style across different aesthetics.

In terms of wearability, these earrings bridge casual and formal beautifully. The silver pair works especially well with cool-toned blazers in gray, navy, or black for a sharp office outfit. For evening, they hold their own with a cocktail dress or silk slip without needing a necklace.

They also make a thoughtful gift. Earrings with this shape have a face-framing effect, making them a flattering pick for most people. They’re also the perfect size to be noticeable without weighing down the earlobe. And with both gold and silver options available, it’s easy to choose a pair that fits the recipient’s style.

1994 Cult-Classic Was Released 32 Years Ago Today

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:58am

Universal Pictures released Reality Bites on Feb. 18, 1994, the romantic comedy-drama that would become a defining film for Generation X.

Directed by Ben Stiller in his feature directorial debut and written by Helen Childress, the movie stars Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Stiller himself, alongside Janeane Garofalo and Steve Zahn.

Set in Houston, Texas, the film follows recent college graduates navigating love, work and life, striking a chord with young audiences and eventually earning cult status.

Helen Childress originally wrote the screenplay on spec in 1990, drawing from her own life and the experiences of friends during the early 1990s economic recession. Producer Michael Shamberg recognized the story’s potential and approached Childress, while Ben Stiller, known for his work on The Ben Stiller Show, was hired to direct in 1992.

Stiller later joined the cast, shaping the character of Michael Grates, a young TV executive and the third point in the film's love triangle.

Principal photography lasted 42 days in 1993, with exteriors filmed in Houston, including notable scenes at Tranquillity Park and the Two Shell Plaza building, while interiors were completed in Los Angeles.

Production saw early tensions, such as Garofalo’s temporary firing, but Ryder’s support led to her reinstatement. The cast, including Hawke, Ryder, Garofalo and Zahn, brought authenticity to their roles, capturing the anxieties and hopes of post-college life.

Reality Bites centers on Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder), a valedictorian turned documentary filmmaker struggling to find meaningful work, and her friends Troy Dyer (Ethan Hawke), Vickie Miner (Janeane Garofalo), and Sammy Gray (Steve Zahn). The film explores the uncertainty and frustrations of twentysomethings facing the "real world."

Troy, a struggling musician, and Lelaina share unspoken feelings until life circumstances push them apart and back together. Meanwhile, Vickie navigates promiscuity and career growth, while Sammy confronts his sexuality in a conservative environment. Lelaina’s brief relationship with Michael Grates becomes a commentary on artistic compromise, as her documentary is transformed into a commercialized television piece.

The film’s soundtrack became as iconic as its story. Lisa Loeb’s “Stay (I Missed You)” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first unsigned artist to achieve the feat.

Other memorable tracks included Crowded House’s “Locked Out,” Juliana Hatfield Three’s “Spin the Bottle” and Big Mountain’s “Baby, I Love Your Way.” The soundtrack sold over 1.2 million units and reached #13 on the Billboard 200, cementing its place in pop culture.

Over the years, Reality Bites has maintained its status as a cultural touchstone, reflecting the attitudes, uncertainties and ambitions of Gen X. Its influence continues, with discussions of a possible television series adaptation appearing in 2013 and 2022, showing the story’s lasting relevance for new audiences.

“Like the generation it presents so appealingly, it doesn’t see any point in getting all bent out of shape and overambitious. But it knows how to hang out and have a great time,” wrote Caryn James of The New York Times in her 1994 review, perfectly capturing the film’s enduring charm. As we mark the 32nd anniversary of Reality Bites, it remains a snapshot of young adulthood in the 1990s, a film about friendship, love and the quest for purpose that still resonates today.

Jake Paul Sends Cool Message About His Olympian Girlfriend Jutta Leerdam

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 12:19am

Jake Paul is once again showing the world how proud he is of his fiancée, Jutta Leerdam.

Just days after she added two more medals to her Olympic record, Paul posted a short Instagram video that quickly caught fans’ attention. In the clip, he lifts Leerdam onto his shoulder while she proudly flexes her gold and silver medals from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

His caption was playful but meaningful: “From now on call me Jutta Leerdam’s fiancé.”

Paul, who has built his name in boxing and social media, made it clear he is happy to stand behind his Olympic champion partner.

Jutta Leerdam’s Record-Breaking Winter Olympics Performance

Leerdam had a huge showing in Milan. She won gold in the 1,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. She followed that up with a silver medal in the 500 meters. The Dutch star stood on the podium again alongside fellow Dutch skater Femke Kok, who won gold in the 500m.

View this post on Instagram

Paul was in the stands during her races. When she broke the Olympic record in the 1,000m, he was seen getting emotional. Before that race, he had already sent her a loving message online: “Today is your day baby. You’ve worked your whole life for this. We all love and support you so much go get ’em champ.”

View this post on Instagram

Leerdam’s success is not just about medals. Experts believe her earning power could grow to between $10.9 million and $13.6 million per year during peak Olympic cycles. She already has major sponsors like Nike, SKIMS, Hema and Red Bull.

Professor Rob Wilson, a sports finance expert, said per Mail UK, “Her value proposition, first of all, stands independently of Jake Paul. This is about her and what she’s able to do.”

He also explained that their relationship boosts their visibility as a couple. Like other famous sports duos, they create strong marketing power through their combined audience.

Paul reportedly secured a massive prize purse for his December 2025 fight with Anthony Joshua. Despite losing that bout by knockout and suffering a broken jaw, Paul said he plans to keep boxing. On an episode of his brother Logan Paul’s podcast Impaulsive, he shared, “Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna take some time off to go support Jutta at the Olympics. Then she's gonna move to Puerto Rico.”

There are also signs the couple is thinking long-term. When asked about having children, Paul admitted, “Yeah. That! I have such baby fever.”

Leerdam echoed similar thoughts in an Instagram post after her Olympic wins. She shared a video taken at the Olympic Village before and after earning her medals.

“I took the first video with the thought of showing my future kids one day… I didn’t know I’d be filming an even better one just two weeks later,”  her caption read.

View this post on Instagram

Their story started with a direct message. Paul reached out to Leerdam on Instagram and invited her to appear on his podcast. She once admitted she never expected to date him. But over time, they clicked.

They have supported each other through busy schedules, long-distance travel, championship fights and now record-breaking Olympic moments.

Right now, though, the spotlight is clearly on Leerdam. With three Olympic medals to her name, including two from Milan, she has become one of the standout stars of the Winter Games.

And if Jake Paul’s latest Instagram post proves anything, it’s that he is more than happy to let her shine.

1993 Best-Selling Novel by Critically Acclaimed Author is Now Free on Amazon

Wed, 02/18/2026 - 11:37pm

More than 30 years after it first captivated readers, The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides is having another moment, and this time, it won’t cost many readers a thing.

The critically acclaimed 1993 novel is currently available to read for free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, making it easier than ever to revisit or newly discover one of the most haunting literary debuts of the 20th century.

Set in suburban Michigan in the 1970s, The Virgin Suicides follows the five enigmatic Lisbon sisters, Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary and Therese, as seen through the eyes of a group of neighborhood boys who become obsessed with understanding them.

The novel unfolds like a memory wrapped in a mystery as the narrators attempt to piece together what happened to the sisters and why. The story blends adolescent longing, repression, suburban fragility and small-town folklore into something dreamlike and devastating.

The Virgin Suicides marked Eugenides' debut and quickly established him as a major literary voice. The novel has been widely praised for its lyrical prose and psychological depth, and it helped pave the way for Eugenides' later Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Middlesex (2002).

"I wrote this book before I became 'a writer'," said Eugenides in 2023. "No one was waiting for it. No one cared if I finished it or not. It was composed in the purest of states, written in snatches at my desk at my nine-to-five office job, for two hours each week night, and for four hours every Saturday and Sunday."

Over the years, the book has become a cult classic, frequently appearing on "best of" lists and college reading syllabi. Its reputation only grew with time, particularly after its adaptation into a film.

In 1999, The Virgin Suicides was adapted into a feature film directed by Sofia Coppola in her directorial debut. The film starred Kirsten Dunst as Lux Lisbon and became a defining piece of late-'90s indie cinema. Coppola's dreamy, atmospheric interpretation introduced the story to a new generation.

In 2018, a 25th anniversary edition of the novel was released, featuring a foreword by author Emma Cline (The Girls), who has cited Eugenides' novel as a formative influence, fully establishing its status as a modern American classic.

For longtime fans and new readers alike, discovering The Virgin Suicides for free on Kindle Unlimited is the equivalent of finding buried treasure. Whether you're drawn in by literary nostalgia, the Sofia Coppola connection, or simply the promise of a haunting suburban mystery, The Virgin Suicides remains as compelling and unsettling as ever.

And for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, it's as easy as tapping a button.

Walmart’s 'Retro' Mid-Century Modern Sideboard Has 'Designer Vibes,' and It’s on Sale for $170

Wed, 02/18/2026 - 11:28pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

If you’re diving into spring cleaning, one of the simplest ways to cut down on clutter is by upgrading your storage. Instead of stuffing items into random bins or overcrowded closets, adding a well-designed sideboard can instantly make a room feel more organized. Sideboards are especially versatile because they offer generous hidden storage while also giving you a surface to display decor, making them both practical and stylish.

If mid-century modern style speaks to you, the Laintene 3-Drawer Sideboard is a great choice. Right now, it’s on sale for 45% off at Walmart, bringing the price down from $310 to just $170. For a heavy-duty piece that looks designer-inspired, that’s a strong value.

The sideboard comes in three colors — walnut, natural oak, and black — so it’s easy to coordinate with your space. The full-size version measures 55.1 inches long, 15.6 inches wide, and 29.9 inches tall. There are also two smaller 31-inch options if you’re working with tighter square footage. The top supports up to 220 pounds, and it includes an anti-tipping kit for added safety. Silent, smooth drawer slides and sturdy legs make it feel solid and well-constructed.

Storage is where this piece really shines. The spacious top is perfect for styling with flowers, framed photos, or a statement lamp. Inside, you’ll find three roomy center drawers along with dual side compartments and four independent sections with adjustable shelves. Unlike fixed shelving, these adjustable sections allow you to customize the layout based on what you’re storing, whether that’s games, books, records, or craft supplies.

Design-wise, it leans strongly mid-century modern. The rich wood grain textures, gold hardware, and gently rounded corners give it a warm, retro feel. The curved tambour doors add visual interest without overwhelming the silhouette, creating a clean yet character-filled look that complements both modern and vintage-inspired spaces.

Beyond the living room, this cabinet works in multiple rooms. Use it as a pantry storage unit, a dining room coffee bar, a bar cabinet, or even an entryway console for keys and mail. With a 4.6 rating, shoppers love this sideboard too. One reviewer dubbed it the “best retro cabinet ever,” noting that it’s “super easy to assemble and great quality.” Another said it has “designer vibes at an excellent price.”

1885 Best-Selling Classic Was Published in North America 141 Years Ago Today

Wed, 02/18/2026 - 10:20pm

This classic book, which is read across many English classes around the country, reached a significant milestone on Wednesday.

141 years ago, Mark Twain's most popular book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was officially published in the United States. Though the book was released in December 1884 in the United Kingdom and Canada, the U.S. release was delayed due to a printing error involving an illustration.

Noted for "changing the course of children's literature" in the United States, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn follows a young boy named Huck, who flees his abusive father and travels down the Mississippi River with Jim, a black man escaping slavery. During their journey, Huck encounters a variety of characters and people who portray every socioeconomic class living on or along the river. Themes explored in the novel include the deeply rooted racism before the Civil War and the quest for freedom from society's constraints. The book serves as a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and is told in the first-person POV of Huck.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel by American author Mark Twain, which was first published in the United Kingdom in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885.

Despite its impact on American literature today, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was considered controversial and banned in many classrooms and libraries for years for various reasons. The novel frequently uses the N-word and other degrading terms, and many libraries did not like its coarse language and tone. In addition, many critics argued that, though the book is trying to critique racism, the portrayal of characters like Jim relied on outdated stereotypes. It is important to note that Twain, whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was a white American author born and raised in Missouri.

Over the past century, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been adapted many times through film and TV in various countries. In the United States, the most recent adaptation was the 2014 movie Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn, which starred Joel Courtney as Tom Sawyer, Jake T. Austin as Huck and Katherine McNamara as Becky Thatcher, Tom's primary love interest.

Despite its censorship, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been used to teach American history and literature, offering students a chance to learn about the root causes of racism and the complexities of the pre-Civil War South. After finishing Huckleberry Finn, Twain continued to write books, including A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today with Charles Dudley Warner, Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, The American Claimant, Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc and more. The American author passed away due to a heart attack on April 21, 1910, when he was 74 years old.

As fellow American author Ernest Hemingway famously said in his 1935 book, Green Hills of Africa: "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. It's the best book we've had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since."

1975 Rock Classic Voted 'Best Song About Cheaters'

Wed, 02/18/2026 - 10:10pm

There's a reason why so many chart-topping songs over the years have been about heartbreak...because at some point or another, just about everybody has to deal with going through a breakup. Even worse, most people have had the unfortunate experience of being cheated on...which explains why some of the most powerful and popular tunes ever have been about somebody or other's cheating heart.

So what's the first song people turn to drown out the sorrows of an unfaithful partner? When the fan-driven site Ranker asked readers to vote for the "best songs about cheaters," people had plenty of favorites to share...and the top 10 was a diverse mix of genres spanning multiple decades.

Coming in at #10 was Eric Clapton's "I Can't Stand It" from his 1981 album Another Ticket. Why? Well, the lyrics are all-too relatable: "I can't stand it / You're foolin' around, I can't stand it / You're runnin' around, I won't stand it / You're foolin' around with my heart."

Ranked at #9, "I Wish It Would Rain" by the Temptations has a tragic backstory: Motown staff writer Rodger Penzabene wrote the lyrics after he found out his wife was cheating on him...then took his own life a week shortly after the song's release, per Ultimate Guitar. Kenny Rogers took eighth place with "Lucille" (1977), which tells the complicated tale of a man who can't bring himself to have an affair with a married woman because of her devastated husband and "four hungry children" at home. Chuck Berry's 1955 classic "Maybellene" was next in line (all about a man driving a V8 Ford to chase after his cheating girlfriend in her Cadillac Coupe DeVille) at #7.

Nancy Sinatra's iconic and inspirational "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" (1966) took sixth place, and with good reason: One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you. Kicking off the top five was Eurythmics with "Would I Lie to You" (1985), a satisfying song about someone confronting their disloyal lover and leaving them behind, followed by REO Speedwagon's "Keep on Loving You" (1980) at #4 representing a very different kind of reaction to being cheated on (deciding to stick around anyway).

Taking third place was Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (1967), in which Gaye is "just about to lose his mind" over his cheating partner; coming in second was ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" (1980), with lyrics that definitely hit home for many: "But tell me, does she kiss / Like I used to kiss you? / Does it feel the same / When she calls your name?"

What was crowned the #1 best song about cheaters? The Eagles took that honor with "Lyin' Eyes" (1977), which isn't a huge surprise. How could a song with the line: "She is headed for the cheatin' side of town" not win this contest?

At least the lovelorn have plenty of options for playlists.
